There are 75 days until the November elections. The DNC has a great countdown of action steps that you can take going at the DNC Blog. Today’s step: write a letter to your local paper, describing how Republican policies have hurt you.
But there is much, much more — counting back from 100 days to 76 today. Lots of practical, common sense steps that you can take to get the word out that the do-nothing Rubber Stamp Republican Congress has to go — and that enabling George Bush to keep on failing has to stop.
Things look decent in terms of polls at this point:

But you can’t take a poll to the bank — not even close — and the elections this fall are going to be a battle, from now until November. And it is going to take every one of us working together to get over the finish line in the front of the pack.
If you need some motivation, take a peek at this clip from Howard Dean on yesterday’s Hardball. Plain talk — how refreshing. Or this clip from Cafferty on CNN on the Republican "play the race card" strategery this year. Or, if you missed this one, take a peek at Jon Stewart destroying the latest George Bush presser.
It’s time to suit up, gang. Let’s go kick some ass…

What’s up with the CNN and Gallup polls? Are they historically pro-Rethug?
NOEVEMBER COMING FIRE!
Christy – did you see Harold Ford Jr’s newest ad – they’ve been showing it on blitzer the last couple days.
Here it is
JCB:
Yes, they are.
Good for Dean. Now he might want to revisit the convoluted thinking of the Demmies who are playing both sides of the fence regarding Leiberman. There is still the false belief that there is any real benefit of placating Joe now just in case he ends up getting re-elected. Schumer and Reid are covering their own asses with a coat of teflon “just in case”. Balls gentlemen, please, show some balls!
Valley Girl – If you haven’t seen it already, there is a response to you in the last thread.
Come November, there will be dancing in the streets. This is autumn for the Republicans and almost spring for the Democrats. Getting time to break out the Korbel. Extra dry or brut, if you please. Just wait and see.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 9
I wish I shared your confidence. I’m a little nervous about November.
IMO – the CNN poll is reflecting the disastrous beltway strategy of Dems trying to straddle the Lieberman line. They have few enough credentials on the leadership front; when they then have chunks line up to fight for the right to be Bush’s Best Friend and still get Dem support – they are nuts.
Republicans are running from Bush, Dems are bending over backwards to say it’s ok to run towards Bush.
We sooooo need a third party. FOr now, we’ll work with what we’ve got.
ReddHedd !
Webb, Rowley, Sestak, Massa, Edwards, Brown, Lamont … we REALLY need them.
Oh–and for some definitive smackdown about Gallup’s persistent bias, check out LeftCoaster. That site has kept a pretty close eye on the matter. The link will take you to the search results for gallup. Dig through; you’ll see how whacked they are.
I think Pollkatz has the data in graph form that shows Gallup consistently trending higher for R’s too.
Yeah, Gallup polls are usually VERY rethug-heavy. Every time I see one I automatically adjust it to reality in my mind.
Lately, too, my radar is starting to pick up the beginning of the MSM push to play up “good news” for republicans – polls up, terror tactics winning, blah blah blah – trying once again to create the self-fulfilling prophecy of republican “inevitability” – that “those republicans sure know how to win.”
I’m sure it’ll only get worse the closer we get to November. Thank God we have a few sane voices on TV – like Jack Cafferty – to drown out the noise machine.
The polls look interesting but Christy is right. No way should any of sit on our hands. As a matter of fact the polls show considerable tightening when individuals are polled rather than general parties or even policy questions.
Suiting up . . .
I love it when a woman says Let’s go kick some ass…
OT, but I didn’t even want to participate in the immediate preceding thread.
I get really pissed when comments which I HOPE were merely meant to be critical of failed policies and undue influence of the Israeli government go way over the line and become critical of “Israelis” and “Jews.” As longtime readers here know, I’m highly critical of that government’s policies and have been through the three preceding Israeli administrations. But it is disappointing to see commenters at fdl, some of whom I regard as dear friends here, spew out totally unfocused stuff on the Israeli sub buys (which are old news, BTW) and throw out bs statements about the Israeli economy like “um, Israel did sell fruit and veg nurtured and cultivated by their Palestinian slave laborers until recently…”
As we come closer to this election, more and more crap is going to come from the right to pressure American Jews, who have been, by and large, staunch progressives for a lot longer than almost any other American cultural group, to jump ship and vote red.
Before Sharon’s political reorganization last year, his coma, and Olmert’s rise and fall, the term “Likudnik” was a sort of equivalent to several terms we use to describe organized wingnuts in our country. Likudinik has been superceded, but there is no current term which so easily describes the “Olmertniks” or whatever.
When dealing with this issue, please, please carefully avoid descriptions and anecdotal stuff like went on in “Deja Vu?”
Thanks.
Elections, what elections?

Mary @ 11
In 2003, a lot of Howard Dean’s supporters were agitating for a 3rd party. Dean’s response was “let’s take over this one.” Which is exactly what we (and he) are doing! The powers-that-be sooooo did not want him in charge of the DNC, but the roots made it happen despite them.
I don’t have cable. Did Howard Dean answer the question about whether or not Joe Lieberman would be allowed back into the Dem party if he wins this election?
Oklahoma kiddo @ 9
That is like a dang jinx. Don’t do that.
Hope for the best. Expect the worst. Especially when dealing with this wretched party of scum and villainy known as the GOP, to paraphrase Obi-Wan.
*ilison – Question for you at the end of last thread.
twolf1 @ 10
Yes, I know. But it’ll happen. But of course we cannot stop being relentless in our pursuit of what we know to be right. Now is THE time to pour it on. Doing everything we can, just might save our planet. I think.
If we’d told those Goopers one year ago today that their BEST-looking poll by now would have them down 2 points to the (generic) Dems, they’d have laughed us outta the place.
Now, if we’d told them that one-year-ago-two-weeks-from-now . . .
Anyhow, nemmind that. Let’s just do all we joint-and-severally can to make sure the 11/08/06 tally knocks ‘em on their ass and keeps them there.

Watch the news. Listen to the drumbeat on Iran. Iran, Iran, Iran. Last night Glenn Blech was saying “the reason we went to Iraq was because of Iran”.
They are doing the same thing as with Iraq. They are talking about how we must deal with this issue quickly…It’s on Fox, CNN, MSNCB, talkradio and the big papers…..
They say that Iranians are killing Americans as we read.
They are going to convince the sheep in this nation to go on one last roller coaster ride….off a cliff on this ride though.
They will do it….it IS happening now.
A significant attack in Iraq laid at the feet of Iran and it is a certainty.

If I could a wish upon a star tonight, and have it come true, it would be that Senator Joseph Lieberman would decide of his own volition to drop his quest for his election in the fall. For I really think if he did that and perhaps urged his supporters to consider throwing their weight behind Senator Lamont, then Joe Lieberman could be a grand elder Democrat statesman and have the appointment of his choice in the new Democratic administration in 2008. And there will surely be a Democrat in the WH then. Make no mistake about that. I would support Lieberman, and welcome him home to the Democratic Party. Perhaps if we started sending emails, snail mails, and making phone calls to Joe, en masse, it would help. Urging him in a most polite way to be the hero of the day… I don’t know. Maybe I’m just being naive and silly here.

~~ Democratic primary winner Ned Lamont is accusing U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, now running as an independent, of not holding the Bush administration accountable for failures in responding to the disaster.
Lamont also says Lieberman, ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, mistakenly agreed to put the troubled Federal Emergency Management Agency under the control of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
“I think FEMA worked really well when it had professional management as an independent agency,” Lamont said in an interview this week. “And sure, it was Senator Lieberman who said, ‘Let’s redo FEMA.’ It was Senator Lieberman who said, ‘Let’s put Michael Brown as No. 2 at FEMA.”‘~~

I had to drive through downtown Austin during rush hour this afternoon, and on Guadalupe, right behind the Governor’s Mansion, were all kinds of state troopers in the street and, on the sidewalk, a goodly crowd of protesters – - I’d say about as many the length of the block as you’d see at a well attended parade.
It appeared to be a “United” group of protesters, all on the progressive end of the spectrum. There were “Green” banners, and immigration banners, a living wage banner, I think, plus others.
As I gave them a thumbs up, I looked down at the thermometer in my car. It was registering 107 degrees!
God bless those people. I can hardly walk from the house to the car without feeling faint in this heat, and these good people were out protesting in simply brutal weather.
Note to self: restock car with bottled water and juice for thirsty souls.

Graham’s endorsement of Davis was all I knew about him. I have a lot of respect for Graham, but Davis didn’t impress me last night. Davis seemed a little–how does one say this nicely?–Washingtonish and insincere. Congressman-y. Smith seemed ok. Smith might do better in a debate against Crist in the general, I don’t know. I’m voting for Davis, but I’ll happily support Smith if he wins. BTW, for the non-Floridians here, Crist — the likely Republican candidate — has whiter teefies than Biden’s, but that could be because he has a carefully nurtured year-round tan.
Okay — the economy has officially hit the visibly shitty point: Shell is doing a million gallon giveaway contest for their gas stations. With housing starts and sales numbers and all the other idicators I’ve been trying to keep tabs on — along with the fed rate (such as it is at the moment and potentially going higher) — I think we’ve hit the incompetence squeeze point for economic issues, too. ANyone else getting that feeling?

Your daily gas and oil prices
Average price for regular gasoline 8/24/06 in 50 states and DC
$3.00 plus 18 states
$2.90 plus 12 states
$2.80 plus 13 states
$2.70 plus 7 states
$2.60 plus 1 state
Average national price: $2.905, down $.007
Highest recorded national average price: $3.057 9/5/2005
Highest average price: Hawaii $3.381
Lowest average price: Ohio $2.695
Nymex Crude Future $72.90, down $.03 from 8/22/06
Dated Brent Spot $72.44, up $.36
WTI Cushing Spot $71.99, down $.64
Not much going on in oil prices. Gasoline continues its price decline. In part this is due to the end of summer vacation but mostly it’s inexplicable. Parenthetically, easing gas prices are good news for Republicans. “See, we’re doing something even if we don’t know what that is.”

Christy 121, all I can tell you is that I recently sold every (little dab of) American-company stock I’ve owned for years. Felt especially liberating to get rid of GE, since I now have no responsibility whatsoever for NBC/CNBC/MSNBC . . .
Though I can’t be, my much-reduced fisc will be out of harm’s way.
Christy, on the economy – absolutely. The housing market in Ca has come to a screeching halt. It was overdue for a correction, but it’s burst. Rents in my building just doubled by virtue of a sale. We’re seeing another wave of corporate layoffs, and wages are completely stagnant. Shipping and Delivery rates are going way up. Back to school sales may give a bit of a boost, but it might be short lived.

Putz.
Lieberman is a traitor to his former party. He was the quintessential triangulating Vichy Dem and now he has no business presenting himself as a democrat. Lieberman is this year’s Zell Miller, only worse. Howard Dean could afford to turn up the heat (on Leiberman) just a notch or two. Doing so would help to inspire some fence sitters. (Under the circumstances, It’s hard to believe how pathetic the fence sitters are. There appear to be way too many that are on the gravy train.)
Christy Hardin Smith @ 119
Absolutely. I think there’s a strong undercurrent of concern, based on the disconnect between what the WH says about the broader economy and the nervousness (or worse) most folks are feeling about their individual situations. All this needs is someone to link the whole WH credibility issue with the economy.
Q. Do you feel more economically secure now than you did four years two/four years ago? Do you trust the Republicans to make things better for you, after what they’ve done for the very rich the last six years?
I think that’s a winner.
weeder at 132 — I don’t know if it is still true, but when I was younger, there used to be some oil refineries in Ohio which may have accounted for cheaper prices. Plus, they either have no or very low gas tax. (I grew up in a little town just across the Ohio River in WV, so we used to go over to Marietta quite a bit to get gas when the budget was tight.)
lotus
Gainesville. You?
Ed*ard Teller #114,
I could be wrong, these guys are certainly stupid enough to want to attack Iran, but I don’t think so. An attack on Iran even a non-nuclear one would lead to major disruption of the oil markets, $100/bbl oil, and a world and US recession. They would have a hard enough time justifying such an attack after Iraq and they could never justify to voters the resulting recession.
OK kiddo,
that sort of thinking is helpful. Look at all angles. When I send a letter of criticism to a politician, I always try to use the ’sandwich’ effect of placing the criticism in between two positive comments. Sort of like getting dressed, two plains to one fancy.
OFG- *g*
and, OT, but thank you for driving safely (I read your comment the other day)—as someone driving around in a leetle car, I really do appreciate it.
that’s economic jargon, ain’t it ???

this must be why that house around the corner that was “SOLD” in June is STILL for sale in August, huh ???
Christy- when I saw that Bushco. idea that Iraq was damaging the American psyche, I also thought- it is damaging the American pocketbook- and I don’t mean this in a frivolous way- meaning, rather the economic costs of no-bid contracts, $$ missing, debt and debt ceiling. And, the $$$ costs translate as all the things that we might have done here with the $$ wasted in Iraq- education, science funding, medical research, etc. And, of course, I am not even mentioning body counts of Iraqi civilians, US military, etc.

We’re on the precipice at the moment.
We’ve been chugging along for 5 years, primarily on the strength of the artificially-inflated housing market. With that sector showing all the signs of a not-seen-in-50-years decline, plus other factors like increased energy costs and stagnant real wages, we’re headed for a rough patch for the next couple of years, I think.

You’re in very good company, Christy
New Smyrna, cleter. Goody, you’ll be handy when we get this FDLofFLA partay figured out.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 119
The economy has been slowing down for a while. With increased interest rates and adjustable rate mortgages coming home to roost, the housing bubble was begging to be burst. Gasoline prices decreasing would be part of this as well although I don’t understand the speed of the price declines.

Hugh,
bunker busting nukes for the buried facilities, neutron nukes for the oil pumps and terminals. neutron bombs destroy people without destroying large buildings, pumps, docks and pipelines. quick repair of partially destroyed pipelines are being tested right now on the north slope by hundreds of workers, many of whom are familiar with Iran and Iraq. the brit army unit redeployed to the Iranian border today is highly trained in ……… but maybe you’re right, because, as you pointed out, the people creating this plan probably don’t want the price of oil to go up.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 120
Well, I’ve been wondering how long it was going to take. You can only screw things up this badly for so long. Here’s something I wrote that was in moderation jail and EPU’d two threads ago:
So, even at the things they were trying to do to (with?) the economy, the Bush Administration appears to have failed.
Any ecomomists out there who can correct my impression?
Anyhow, things are definitely starting to look like a burst bubble. The last positive thing in the economy was housing, and as you say, that’s going to shit now.
scarecrow @ 173

OT OT OT def. OT, but for any of you who pitched in with advice on the toilet issue… sigh… I have been defeated. I stepped away from the slow-running toilet to read FDL, and came back to find 1/4 of downstairs covered in 1/2″ water. So much for not keeping my eye on the ball. Then again, the wood floor needed cleaning. Sigh.
cleter…4:29pm
Yeah. I know. It was a dumb idea anyway. I’m a dreamer. Luv what you write here!
ET@173
Does the US have any neutron bombs? I didn’t think any were ever actually deployed.
As the housing market tanks in Florida, you can bet that things are worse elsewhere. Its like somebody turned off the spigot. No real estate – considered by many to be the last leg of our bullsh*t economy – is selling unless it has been deeply discounted (20 to 40 percent off peak prices). The media is full of crap. We are in a very bad economic situation. How can we not be with Dubya’s tax cuts, non stop war, Cheney’s devious closed door energy plan, 500 billion dollar deficit, industry shutting down at breakneck speed, GM and Ford w/ junk bond status as they bail on their employee obligations while investing millions in China and Korea. The World is Flat like Tom Friedman’s Head.
I don’t know which is more immediately appalling — ET’s or VG’s report.
Well, yes, I do. But golly, VG, I’m sorry.
I do bleeve hackworth has nailed it.
Re the “will they attack Iran?” question, what I watch for are WH/Pentagon claims that Iran is directly involved in killing Americans in Iraq, because I think the WH thinks that would allow them to attack Iran without returning to Congress for authorization (I hate to think what that “debate” would look like!).
Today I read a report that some general in Iraq made exactly that connection, but so far, I haven’t seen the MSM pick it up. If it gets repeated and amplified by MSM, I’d see as a very bad sign.
scarecrow – 182 Today I read a report that some general in Iraq made exactly that connection, but so far, I haven’t seen the MSM pick it up. If it gets repeated and amplified by MSM, I’d see as a very bad sign.
I do believe it was mentioned on blitzer earlier this eve.
lotus- I believe we agree that ET’s discussion is uppermost. The extra water an immediate pain, but then I think about New Orleans. And, my AC is broken too. And then I think about temperature and humidity in Iraq. BushCo. just pisses me off so much profoundly than any local minor “issues”.
hackworth @ 5:21 pm (#180) – I made a similar observation in a comment that’s still in moderation (round about #175). The housing market was the only thing that looked positive, and now it appears to be in trouble. Houses are still selling here in the NW, but I don’t know how much they have to knock off the prices. There’s definitely been a slump, and we’re not doing too badly out here economically.
weeder #173,
Ohio gas taxes are in the upper half of states. Gas inventories have increased but why gasoline prices do what they do is pretty much black magic.
This thread has become depressing. Can’t we have one of the fun ones next, where we make jolly sport of Lieberman, or Biden’s teeth, or some such? The housing market, it is to cry. If people can’t refinance their houses to buy plasma TVs, then the terrorists have truly won.
Cujo359 @ 185
Here in California, sales are down 25%, and that’s not considering any price reductions… it’s crazy. I’ve seen more houses sitting on the market for longer than I have since the early 90s.
Terror is, and has always been this administrations hold card. The linkage to the GWOT and Iraq have been severed in the minds of more, and mounting, Americans according to recent polling data I have seen on this blog. I can’t help but feel a concerted effort from this administration will be made to make it more global with stronger linkages for political and profitable gains.
I think I need a shower and it disgusts me to even entertain these thoughts.
cleter @ 5:30 pm (#188) – If people can’t refinance their houses to buy plasma TVs, then the terrorists have truly won.
That comment I have in moderation also touches on this point. The one thing that should be better about this economy is the availabiity of capital. And yet, interest rates are going up. The Bushies and their free market wacko buddies can’t even get that right.
All- comments have been freed. Please reload.
Christy- I can’t see any reason these comments were put into automod, based on text or style. I know from Anne’s comments earlier today that there was some problem , and that you sorted it out. I had a similar experience yesterday- comments in automod by regs., and I couldn’t see why. Problem has returned?
All- sorry- this is a relatively new/ weird problem. Will try to free comments asap, between floor moping.
Edward Teller
I think what even these clowns don’t want is an economic collapse. Nothing happens in isolation and an Iranian conflict would by definition and geographically be Gulf wide. They cried wolf on Iraq. I don’t think they can on Iran.
cleter @ 178
That’s what the US government and wikipedia say, so there probably is no actual deployment of neutron weapons. And anyway, every party to this affair has always told us what types of nuclear weapons their country deploys, right?
twolf — you’re right, and that’s also where they interviewed the editor from Jerusalem discussing whether Israel would try it alone. Can you imagine? Israel just took a huge political hit for its apparently unsuccesful bombing of Lebanon, for which Amnesty International condemns them for apparent war crimes. It is serious to think Israel would bomb Iran, after learning that they can’t defeat Hezbolla on their own borders? And before the Europeans commit troops to Lebanon? But then you realize there isn’t a rational adult in the WH security team to tell either their or our crazies to back off.
scarecrow 181
I’ve noticed that meme as well–”Iranians are killing our soldiers.” Just a short hop from there to “hell, if Iranians are already killing our soldiers, we’re already at war with them. May as well bomb ‘em.” Look for insurgents/militants to start getting refered to as “Iranian supplied militants.”
Hi, guys, how is everyone today? I haven’t read today but TRex really did his little self proud last night with the Tucker boy. Love his late nights, may think of some topics for him to use for a rainy GA day.
I have to admit to being a little bit lazy in my letter-writing without a computer. I spent lots of time in my garden and did a ton of needed and overdue housecleaning. I’m glad you did this post, Christy, I was talking with my son about the election, explaining Lamont/Lieberman to him today in the car and got “that feeling” that it was time to get back to my daily notes to the Congress.
OT, but worth mentioning, we went to the Boston Museum of Science today to see Body Worlds 2, the exhibit of plastinated cadavers. There has been some press aboutthe ethical concerns re: public display of cadavers, but I thought it was utterly fascinating. If it comes near, I highly recommend it. We also saw a great IMAX production called “The Human Body” with lots of CGI effects taking us up close inside organs and gestating fetuses. Also excellent.
Sorry for OT, but it’s not a topic that comes up much.
Israel’s new submarines is a none to subtle message to Iran and the rest of the Middle East. Good God. Things are out of control.
VG — I’ll take a peek again. I thought I found the problem. SIGH I’m so tech challenged…this may take a few minutes.
lotus,
I hope you won’t forget ol’ hackworth ;)
I like Smith for gov. I’m hoping Crist and Gallagher keep slinging mud at each other. It’s encouraging that Crist has a big lead. Crist is the pro choice rethug. Gallagher is the architypical hard core right winger tough on crime, pro life, I’m just like Jeb Bush, hurricane fightin, people protectin, never raise taxes, right wing BS slinger – and he’s trailing large.
Crist in the the big lead, demonstrates that Floridians aren’t as red(necked) as previously thought (don’t forget our 2000 election was stolen and rigged hard on many fronts).
Lotus, look for a big Smith (not big Johnson) sign in front of my shop coming soon.
Here’s my highly-technically-approved diagnosis:
them hamsters are fed UP with all that cardio!
Christy- thanks. I asked Anne earlier, for future reference, what the problem might be, but she said she didn’t ask for info. Valley Girl @ 5:33 pm (#193) – My very similar comment from two threads back was also put in moderation jail. I think it may have something to do with the mention of interest and the thing one pays interest on in one article might be problematic. It’s a frequent spam subject, after all.
cleter @ 118
Sandy D’Alemberte, former President of FSU, former President of the ABA, and a very progressive, savvy guy, is backing Davis too. I’m on Smith’s emailing list, although I have no idea why, and I haven’t been impressed. But as I said upstream, I’ll back him if he wins. It is going to very very hard to beat Crist (unless of course those rumors turn out to be true, and then the Dem will beat him for the wrong reason.)
NEVER forget my neighbor hackworth! I almost slid into your shop ‘tother day but didn’t quite have enough time to spare. What day(s) do you take off, by the way?
ET, I am honored.
Cujo- no, it is not THAT problem, as far as I can tell. Anne was being hit by a lot of comments put into auto mod much earlier to day, and I had the same experience last eve. I couldn’t see anything obvious as to why many of the comments ended up in automod. Several threads, many topics.

The report I read, the US general was saying the Iranians were directly supporting and directing the “Shiite insurgents.” think about that one. Bet you thought we were fighting the sunni insurgents, or the al Q terrists, or the dead-enders, etc. Nope, it’s the Shiite insurgents — e.g., the majority of the country!! We’re in Dr. Strangelove territory.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 5:35 pm (#199) – That submarine deal had to be in the works for months. I don’t know what that means, other than that it clearly wasn’t some last minute idea due to the failure of their Lebanon operation, or anything of that sort. Israel has clearly been contemplating this deal for quite a while.
I have been in constant anxiety about an attack on Iran ever since Sy Hersh’s articla in New Yorker. I wonder about the generals behind the scenes, the effect of that article and the media that followed re Rummy’s incompetence, which still comes up occasionally. I need to check out Larry Johnson, have only scanned. It is so insane to think that any of them would even consider taking on Iran with Iraq and Afghanistan crashing (further) and the fragile state of Lebanon/Israel. With the int’l community barely stepping forward for the UN mission, there would be a negative balance of support (where we are already) for igniting anything in Iran.
But I know that we cannot expect rational thought from the admin, and that with the election coming, polls stuck in reality land, nothing would really shock. It just breaks my heart.
hackworth @ 199
Amen! Coming from one of the bluest blue parts of the state, I can attest that even the GOP-loving Cubans still don’t have a lock on the southern tip.
BarbaraB, do you see Gallagher deploying “those rumors” in the few days left?
I know Davis isn’t much at the podium, but Smith’s ads (I guess it is) have turned off my easy-going friend M quick thoroughly.
you know what, zen? I have friends that support g dubya and were hesitant to see that tableau of “ickiness” ’cause they were dead. I asked them “what if they were americans who had died on 9/11″ and they became much more talkative. I have seen hundreds of people die in the course of my profession and it is all fascinating and oh so lonely for them. Lots of Americans, Iraqis, Afghans, Sudanese, Haitians, etc have died since and before.
I am honored with each and every moment that I spend with those humans.
ET ((((hug)))))
quick = quite
Here in Maine, we have a little more than twice as many houses/buildings on the market as we did just two years ago. There are about 1/3 less under contract (by numbers, not percentages) than there were then. As an individual with a house on the market, I’d say there haven’t been any serious lookers in more than 2 months, and we “enjoy” a fairly short selling season here.

I worked with a doc who wore matching bowtie, suspenders, socks and watches every day. He is a big-hearted palliative care doc who is totally loved.

An attack on Iran would not be limited to say Natanz but would have to hit about 20-30 other nuclear related sites. Then there would have to be strikes against command and control centers, on Iranian military assets, especially those that could threaten shipping in the Gulf and through the Straits of Hormuz, and on Iranian infrastructure such as communications, roads, bridges, and ports to slow and hamper any Iranian response. This would be a major, major undertaking and would have vast regional and international repercussions. It is beyond Israel’s capabilities.

The strategy of the (so-called) Democratic DLC is pretty obvious. They want to support the NeoCon war mongers. They don’t give a shit about the Democratic grassroots.
The message we need to send these assholes in November can be summarized in two words: Fuck off!
Cujo359 @ 211
This is true. But I have always thought, that the Israelis were extremely circumspect in planning for their future. Far better than we. As exemplified for example by George W. Bush. So with this in mind I am compelled to believe the Israeli’s have always, and will remain mindful of Iran, Lebanon and just about every corner of the world. And I don’t fault the Israeli’s for their circumspection. The Israeli’s I think are fully cogent of the ramifications of the submarine purchases on the collective Iranian psyche. Especially in so far as the Iranian military possibilities and capabilities are concerned.

My friend the hedge fund trader says the next few years are going to be very good for vulture funds (they specialize in distressed and bankrupt industries and companies.) He’s been shorting housing stock for awhile. He recommends short term treasuries – no more than two years — and, if you want to keep a foot in equities, blue chips. BTW, he makes a sh*tload of money, got his mother (who lives in Connecticut) to vote for Lamont, and after looking at the “macaca” tape, said he was going to contribute to Webb. Good guy.

Coupla things. Smith is a DINO. When he ran for the state legislature it was damned clear he was in some Republican/BigBiz thrall, and add to that his unsanitary relationship with Big Sugar. Smith also thought it was just fine to give the phone companies free rein to segment and soak their customers in the name of “competition.” I am not in love with Davis, though my hero Graham’s endorsement goes a long way, but I do not like Smith a-tall. There’s always the Cartoon Network.
How republican rule has hurt me, let me count the ways:
1) Republican rule has threatened the existence of my country, the United States, as a free democratic republic by undermining the Constitution and the rule of law, ignoring the fundamental founding principle of separation of powers, abdicating their responsibilities to provide oversight of the executive branch, and packing the Supreme Court with right-wing activist judges that support the republican agenda to undermine the Constitution.
2) Republican rule has ruined my nation’s honor, its military, and its economy by pursuing an unnecessary, illegal invasion of Iraq.
3) Republican rule has bred contempt and disgust by killing and maiming tens of thousands of Americans and Iraqis in their illegal unnecessary war in Iraq.
4) Republican rule has ignored real security issues at our ports, along our borders, in our transportation systems, in our water supplies, and at our hazardous material facilities by creating with lies a false security threat in Iraq and wasting all our strength their.
5) Republican rule has threatened my children’s future by bankrupting the Federal government and making the US beholden to foreign powers in order to heap enormous tax benefits upon the hugely rich, well-to-do, and advantaged.
6) Republican rule has threatened the environment, and in-turn mine and my family’s health and well being by undermining regulations and providing corporate give-aways of my national treasures.
7) Republican rule has tried to undermine my retirement security by destroying social security.
8) Republican rule has ignored the scientifically proven, very real threat of global warming.
9) Republican rule has threatened the future of the United States by blocking common sense, available measures to make our life-style less dependent on oil.
10) Republican rule has made me unsafe by filling important government positions such as at FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security with incompetent cronies who’s only qualification is that they are republican campaign contributors.
11) Republican rule has incessantly tried to invade my privacy by having the government dictate who I can love, when I can die, what is acceptable as faith, and limit my control over my own body.
12) Republican rule has violated the very meaning of truth and honesty.
Republican rule has done untold damage and destruction done to my nation, and my personal well being.
