During this morning’s press conference, President Bush sent me running for my Webster’s.

A reporter tried to follow up on a question the president was circumventing but not answering. “Don’t interrupt me,” Bush chided, “I’m perorating.” He chuckled to himself and then added, “Look it up in your dictionary.”

And so I did.

Perorating. v. 1. To conclude a speech with a formal recapitulation. 2. To speak at great length, often in a grandiloquent* manner.

*Grandiloquent. adj. Pompous or bombastic speech or expression.

Ah, yup. That sums things up rather nicely.

Seems to me the Swift Boaters or VFF or whatever could be castrated by some really nasty scandal attached to them. Same for many other RNC operatives. I still can’t find a transcript, but here is a quote from a Bloomberg article on the meeting:

Dean said that the single biggest cost in the federal budget is interest paid on the national debt, which is “more than is being spent on Medicaid” or the combined total for “unemployment compensation, food stamps, child nutrition programs and the earned-income tax credit.”

But the statement I remember was said by someone other than Dean—same idea though.

I’m trying to find a transcript—it was broadcast on CSPAN. The speaker, I believe, was introduced as formerly of Goldman-Sacks. This is from memory, but he spoke briefly and made that point so clearly, I thought it could be very important to Dems’ campaigns.
