The peanut has woken up with a high fever again this morning, after we thought we’d gotten it under control. So we’ll be headed out to the pediatrician in a bit to see what this is.
In the meantime, I’m sipping a little coffee with a small girlie on my lap, and perusing the news and this item caught my eye this morning (from the NYDailyNews):
Sen. Joseph Lieberman said he’s no President Bush yesterday as the worsening violence in Iraq continued to drive politics at home….
Lieberman (D-Conn.), who mounted an independent election bid after losing, criticized Bush, pushing to win over moderate Democrats and independents.
"I feel that I allowed my opponent to distort my position on Iraq," Lieberman said on CBS’ "Face the Nation."
"He made me into a cheerleader for George Bush on everything that’s happened."
Lieberman insisted "we did the right thing in overthrowing Saddam Hussein," but added that he has been critical "about the failure to send enough American troops to secure the country, about the absence of adequate plans and preparation to deal with post-Saddam Iraq." (emphasis mine — notice how nothing is ever Joe’s fault?)
Oh, really? "Critical" eh? Were these in super secret tete-a-tete breakfast dates with George Bush or what? Or do you mean critical like this:
It is time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge that he will be Commander-in-Chief for three more critical years, and that in matters of war, we undermine Presidential credibility at our nation’s peril. (Video here.)
Ned Lamont called him on this idiocy yesterday, after Turncoat Joe’s appearance on Face the Nation:
The Lamont campaign fired back in a written statement."His new-found ‘criticism’ of the war won’t convince Connecticut voters after so many years of stubbornly rubber-stamping Bush’s failed policies," the statement said.
Absolutely right. A rubber stamping leopard can’t just change his spots, no matter how the political winds are blowing at the moment — especially if he comes with a long history of public statements and whiny nagging that don’t back up his claims.
Poor Turncoat Joe. You are on tape, on the Congressional record, and all over the place lecturing the rest of us how we are supposed to think, act, and believe about George Bush and all of your various corporate PAC interest cronies…for years. John Kerry called you for what you are — a cheap facsimile of Dick Cheney’s talking points.
You think a sudden public show of tepid affection for W is going to look anything but self-serving and hypocritical at this juncture?
Do you think you can simply stand up and say whatever you like and lie about your record and no one will call you on it? That may be true of the Beltway Buddy classes, but the rest of us live outside the beltway, and we’re all a little starved for some honesty…and we’re prepared to do the tough digging to find the truth. You think you just get a pass to say whatever you want, whenever you want?
Think again. It’s called accountability, Joe, get used to it. You aren’t fooling anyone but yourself.
(You can see Lieberman’s self-serving, deliberately obtuse performance on Face the Nation here at PoliticsTV. Oh, and PS, Joe, that’s a lovely picture above. Sort of symbolic of the whole reason you are in the mess you are — try thinking about that for a while and see why people are disgusted with you.)

Costa Rican Terrazu!
Big Hugs to the Peanut, Christy. I’ll have Kona brewing for you when you get back from the pediatricians.
Aw, poor kid. And sweating through these childhood illness episodes is tough on the mama, too – take care, Christy.
Thanks, beard5. We couldn’t get an appointment until later this morning, so we’re hanging out watching Disney cartoons at the moment. Mercifully, the children’s motrin has kicked in and the fever is back down to low grade. I think it’s likely an ear infection, but we’re going in to be certain. Not taking any chances.
In regards to Ann’s partenship with Dr. Kennedy and their new movie that if there was no Darwin there would be no Hitler….. If you take that line of thinking you could get to the proposition that if there had been no Jesus there would have no Crusades, no massacres of Huguenots in france, no inquisition and propably no Hitler as well. One step further…..No George Bush either.
oh oh oh the Preznit is going to be on the TeeVee this morning to talk about the Middle East … details to come on CNN after the mandatory JonBenet update of the trip by Karr !
Fitz…please…
If someone can turn his back on ‘his party’ so easily, why should it surprise that he is turning his back on his new party now?
Pure politics, nothing else.
Feingold!
Taking no chances is good. And man, ear infections doth suck mightily when you’re a kid.
(I got them a lot as an adult. My doctor advised 1 sudafed, 1 advil every two hours to dry out and open up the tubes. But I don’t know how that would be for children, probably not recommended.)
Hi Christy.
“little starved for some honesty…” ain’t that the truth.
Hope the Peanut rallies quickly.
Going back to read the Libby case comments (couldn’t get them on the b’berry).
I was interested in the potential greymail issues, which I’m sure were addressed in there.
At least we know that the purpose of a fever is to burn out an infection…that said, a high fever IS cause for concern. Ditto on the value in visiting your MD.
(OH ISH, Dubya will be in Maine later this week….can’t we close the borders here?)
*ilson, thank you for watching so that I don’t have to.
It’s such a beautiful morning up here, just cool enough, and the sun is out, birds are chirping in the bushes. I don’t wish to spoil that by listening to the Bush, I’ll stick with the birds.
This would’ve been on topic a few days ago on Christy’s post Katrina thread, but here’s a TiVo alert for tonight:

BREAKING NEWS! MAN FLIES ON PLANE! Details all day long!
Are these journalists incredibly lazy or just gutless? This guy lies like a fucking rug, and they constantly let him get away with it.
OS, is he going to be in Kennebunkport?
(Praying not, my folks are staying for the week up there, it’s an annual thing)
RGJoe is really just an asterisk after all: http://www.getintheirface.blogspot.com/
*wink*wink
Joe Lieberman certainly is helping the GOP … what a tool and a fool!
Beardy–It’s for a Shrub family gathering so I guess your parents will be hugely inconvenienced if they try to do anything there….Sawry
“Absolutely right. A rubber stamping leopard can’t just change his spots, no matter how the political winds are blowing at the moment — especially if he comes with a long history of public statements and whiny nagging that don’t back up his claims.”
How many Democrats take calls from Karl Rove that subsequently result in the backing of the Republican Party? Where there’s Karl, there’s evil.
Look at the best way for the Repubs to win in CT. Support LIEberman and then give him a cabinet post.
Presto chango – we now have a republican senator in CT.
windje
handle at 18 — oh, really? You sure about that? And the sort of prior strategic genius under which we have been operating for years got us a Republican House and Senate and a Rethug in the White House. How’s that working for you?
“handle” is a repeat troll … no coffee for trolls, please!
Unfortuntely, as the latest polling shows, people ARE being fooled. And as a strong Ned supporter, I have to say I’m puzzled by the response yesterday. Where it was so easy for you, for me or for anyone who knows how to Google to find and post multiple quotes belieing (belying?) Ol’ Joe’s claims, the campaign releases what a mounts to a ‘nyah nyah’ response that, to the untrained eye, would appear to show that they can’t back up their claim.
A silly mistake, but one that shouldn’t be made. This race is SOOOOOOOOOOO winnable, I just hate seeing things like this that, frankly, just look lazy to me.
Well, OS, if you see, in the papers, that a 67 year old man was taken to the hospital for excessive frothing and foaming, and unintelligible growling noises, you can figure out who’s dad it is. *sigh* Mom will have her hands full, I’m sure.
Goddamn but Joe is dense. He’s the one who made Joe Lieberman into a cheerleader for George W. Bush, and he’s the one who was overweeningly proud of it until he got his ass kicked by his constituents, at which point he fired his campaign staff… and fired his constituents.
We don’t just need him out of the Senate, we need him out of the party, as an example of the way Democrats aren’t stupid and weak, because as it is, he’s an example of exactly that. Who fucked up Iraq? George W. Bush. Who cheered him on at every goddamn step of the way? Joe Lieberman.
Darn, Christy, I was really hoping that Fi’s fever was a one-day deal, but I’m glad to hear you can get into the doc quickly.
Was it just on my end, or are the server-hamsters a li’l peaked too this morning? did they just hafta upchuck after so much Alligator Bag maybe? P’raps if I tell ‘em about their portrait on my fridge door, they’ll feel better — so here you go, cute li’l pals, this one’s for/of you:
Your wheel in the background, one of you grins to the other: “I usually do two hours of cardio and then four more hours of cardio and then two more of cardio.”
Christy – sorry about the little girl waking up with a fever again. Without any signs of cold or flu, it has got to be either an ear infection or strep throat. A temp along with a cold is expected — an unexplained fever is something to check with the dr.
Hope She (and you) feel better soon.
So Joey is now stepping to the plate and criticizing Bush? This is the second time.
The first time was his “deathbed conversation” at the end of the Democratic primary.
The second time is now and he is even starting to use some of the rhetoric of the anti-war left.
At some point someone must have taken Joey aside and let him in on the secret that Bush is about as popular as Pig Sh*t on a Birthday cake. Even leading Republicans like McCain have figured out how suicidal a pro-Bush stance is.
The fact that it has taken Joey so long to figure this out and to change his rhetoric is a reflection on how out of touch he has become with Americans and not just the Democrats but the independents and many Republicans as well.
Of course, nothing ever changes. McCain will criticise Bush’s pro-torture stance with harsh words but then stand besides him and support Bush’s 2004 run. Hay McCain! How about telling Bush that unless he follows the Geneva convention he will not get his support. Ah, but that would require taking a stand on principles, something no one is willing to do, not McCain and least of all Lieberman. At least Joey is finally getting his rhetoric straight, I guess that is some consolation…
Christy,
I sent you an email the other day in regards to your Face-the snark post. Did you get it? And if so did you check out the links I ask you too?
I’d really like to know what you think about that.
Thanks,
If not a liar, a weasel.
Joe, that is. Typically senatorial parsing bs.
I sure hope that Lamont had ads up in CT because Joe’s about-face (that would be 2-faced I guess) with criticizing Bush cannot be believed. Don’t people in CT know that Joe is being paid with republican money, supported by republican consultants, and is taking advice from Karl Rove? If Bush is so unpopular, how can Joe be ahead in the polls?
Having a hard time figuring it out and am worried. But what else is new.
Pediatricians!
I’m used to *ilson’s reminding us about not feeding trolls , but CHS?
Apologies if it’s been covered already, but did anyone make note of the “Independent Senate Candidate – Connecticut” label they gave him on “FtN” yesterday? It might seem like beating the proverbial dead horse, but I still argue that giving him the illusion of being the Independent Party candidate helps his campaign. I’ve e-mailed them about it (contact information for FtN here, if you’re feeling so inclined to do the same), so we’ll see what happens.
Of course, sick kids take precedence — best wishes.

GrandmaJ @ 32
Because he is like a comfortable pair of old shoes. You know they should go, but you’re reluctant to part with them.
The next couple of polls will show if they’re getting ready to let him go. He’ll get 90 percent of the Republicans, but where the change needs to happen is with the Independents and Dems. Ned’s got two months to make it happen.
I thought McCain was going to start crying with the love he poured out for HoJo yesterday on MTP… btw, it was oh, so nice to have Gregory sit in for Timmeh…
(emphasis mine.)
Sorry Al, seems the rethugs all love them some Joey Lieberliar and the RNC sets the schedule for all of these “mavericks”.
It’s all pretty sick.
Christy, hope little Fiona is better soon!
US Today has a front page piece about Bush, the “uniter” is unleashing his Chief Political Troll, Karl Rove into the already polluted political well to politically gut his adversaries.
Yes, in these troubled times it is important to have the Ghost of Lee Atwater sowing political discord and enmity among the American populace.
These cretins will gladly destroy every institution in the nation just to maintain their flabby, sweaty grasp on the levers of power.
History had better start making quicker judgments on these pirates.
-GSD
I think the Lamont campaign needs to take a few items and “schedule” them for hammering with Lieberman. Right now,IMO, it should be Katrina.
Not only Lieberman and Brown.
Lieberman and the failure of his committee, where he is ranking member and he is “buds”with the Chair — his committee that would not subpoena documents from the WH and still won’t (Rubber Stamp Joe).
Lieberman and not pushing for documents even after the release of the FEMA video showing Bush lied when he made his “who could predict” spiel on the levees.
Lieberman – should be asked: Why did you not call the President on his lies to the American people and his failure as the person primarily responsible, in a national disaster, for implementing the national emergency plan? WHy have you not subpoena’d the President to come and testify?
Lieberman’s responsiblity for the Katrina contract response.
Lieberman and pictures of the mobile homes, paid for and sitting empty – where they were not wanted.
When it comes to actually getting anything done, where was all that “bipartisanship” and “seniority” that he pulls in a little red wagon behind him?
**************
*ilson – did you know DOD was going to be exploding big big bombs in So In’s limestone caves?

This puts a little perspective into why the terrorists chose to pull off the suicide bombing in Jordan earlier
CIA Kidnapped Two Australians
Towards the end, the story mentions Jordan being used as a hub/clearing point for black sites & rendition.
OTOH, a long time CT Dem who rarely talks politics (he deals with many GOP clients) told me that he has loathed Joe since he first came into office, supported and voted for Lamont, and is telling all his friends to do so as well……
Yikes, maybe Chuckie Schumer is not being as hands-off on this CT race as he is trying to appear. Seems that Joementum’s new media consultant Josh Isay
But Mary,
King Abdullah is a moderate, pro-American leader, not the type that would allow his security forces to torture anyone.

WHAT is Schumer thinking?
That is bull.
And anyone who calls Lieberman’s party anything but what it is – Lieberman for CT – is pretty much lieing. I mean, why not call him a Whig?
The WaPo has an AP story up titled “Lamont Attracting New Democratic Allies”. Here’s a taste:
I can just see that smile . . .
George A at 28 — yes, I got it. But between putting together blog posts and taking care of my sick child, I’ve had no time to look at anything. I’ll get to it as soon as I can, but some patience would be much appreciated this week, as my daughter, understandably, comes first.
ummm Mary — Joe’s party is officially “Connecticut for Lieberman”, not the other way around. http://www.CT4Joe.com
Hugs to Fi and Fi’s mommy!
Frank Rich on Imus this morning [EPU-ed on last thread] answering Imus’ hesitant question on whether he thinks the Bushies have been using fear as a scare tactic.
Short answer. Yes. It’s the pattern….
Rich also noting Couric’s upcoming CBS news will be live-streamed on the toobz simultaneously. And none of the other nets do it. One might note the woefully inadequate toobz-use MSNBC makes of one of its anchor programs.
So for their itty-bitty pull quote from one little segment of the Imus show,
Will MSNBC transcribe Rich on incompetence of Chertoff? Or Rich on Bush administration scare tactics. Or Rich on…well you get the idea. Or maybe Buchanan shilling on his border issues. Hmmmm, fence vs. wall…. Although Buchanan’s bang-on criticizing the big business corruption that facilitates illegal immigration.
Oh, wait! Shiny thing. Snake on a plane. Champagne and gourmet food. How foolish of me to expect a NEWS network to provide real news.
GSD – I think GITMO, Bagram, AbuGhraib – all pretty much walks in the park next to the black sites and Egyptian torture franchise.

Interesting. Will President Fischer or Chancellor Schuessel go after the folks in BVT who cooperated or no?
They’re supposed to be neutral – but they’re not if they are cooperating.
Jordan is firmly over a barrel now, could be destabilized if they don’t continue to cooperate. Wonder if Jordan’s King Abdullah “knew” about the usage of Jordan, or if he merely turned his head…?

Are there any left? Anywhere?
I went poking around for the FTN transcript, because I wanted to check if Joe was being critical of Bush, or just talking about being critical of Bush at some unspecified point in the past. It doesn’t seem to be up yet, but I did find this gem from 1/22/06:
Great job being critical, Joe! You agree that he doesn’t have the authority, and then leap right into the Republican framing that it’s only spying on “conversations people are having with al-Qaeda,” and wind up undercutting Kerry to favor Specter, calling it “non-partisan,” and saying we should have legislation to let the president “do exactly what he’s done!”
I was in the Navy for nine years. One of our major maxims was that you “don’t assign responsibility without authority.” Joe said that the Iraqi government should take responsibility for reducing sectarian violence.
Great idea, in theory!!! Problem is, the Iraqi government tried to offer amnesty to insurgents back in June and got shot down (Quietly and behind the scenes, but shot down by the USG) for it.
Can’t very well tell Iraqis to solve their own problems and then micro-manage them.

there’s an interesting discussion over at Col Lang’s blog about the Iraqi Army and the impossibility of it “standing up, so we can stand down.”

FishGuyDave @ 34
I understand the frustration, but I’ve gotta say, as long as they make clear that he’s not the Democratic candidate, I think it’s good. Much as I’d like to see him labeled “Connecticut for Lieberman candidate,” the fact that there’s an Independent Party in CT and other independent candidates aren’t allowed to use that term is pretty much a technicality. It’s just a name that’s required for the ballot (even if he chose a really bad one), not a party organization. All those independent voters in polls aren’t members of the Independent Party, so calling him an independent is accurate common usage for nationwide coverage.

BUSH LOWERS EXPECTATIONS ON IRAQ TO MODERATE FIASCO

Because there are people who just have gut feelings about Joe, going way back. They are not swayed by all the reasoned arguments presented here and in the rest of the liberal blogosphere. They buy the party line that “he’s done a good job for 18 years”, they think he’s “good for Israel” and all they know about Ned is that he’s “a millionaire from Greenwich.”
I know 3 or 4 people like that. . .I think if Ned gets more exposure and they learn more about him, they might vote against Joe. There are some issues here that defy rational thought.

Don’t people in CT know that Joe is being paid with republican money, supported by republican consultants, and is taking advice from Karl Rove? If Bush is so unpopular, how can Joe be ahead in the polls?
Connecticut Democrats have watched for the last 10 years as Joe spoke out against his party. At first, he seemed a moral anchor when Billy boy was messing around. When he didn’t get whacked for opening his big mouth, he persisted.
The rage factor was what defeated him in the primary. Direct feedback. We aren’t forgetting, but there is a large republican minority, and an even bigger independent minority. Together they could defeat Lamont. (I really really hope not!!!)
Every time he opens his mouth and lies come out, he’s alienating more and more voters. We’re mostly well educated, progressive people here. I just wish Ned could get more air time.

They have already funded a pro-Lieberman ad.

My favorite part of Lieberman on Face the Nation:
Well, I know that I’ve found Rumsfeld job performance grueling. I’m sure our troops agree. But here’s the punchline:
Compare and contrast with Joe Lieberman, from the Wall Street Journal, June 15, 2004:
So, in Joe’s opinion, Joe is now emboldening the terrorists.
I can’t believe bush said that we have been on the ground in Lebanon for weeks now…

New shiny words.
Only OT so far as it’s not directly about Lieberman. But as far as the horror that is the war in Iraq… Great Neil Young segment on Colbert:

After Helen’s question, bush was struggling so hard to get back on track, he looked so frustrated I thought he was going to bust out bawling.
A word or two on the current CT polls. Remember when? These current polls merely serve to temper the steely resolve of the Ned Lamont supporters. And us too. The shitstorm that will fall on Lieberman, and all those elected officials in the Democratic party who support him will increase to tsunami levels between now and election day. Quite simply, Lieberman must be removed from office, and replaced with someone who reflects the values of good sense. Not some radical lefty, like they try to label Lamont and his supporters. The radicalism comes from our depths of distaste from the authoritarian cult of Bush and his march to destroy the world, America first. I have confidence we will win, but it will be a very tough and nasty fight. Thank God for the innernets that allow a relentless exposure of Joe’s lies. I think people are tired of liars.
Bush: “The strategic objective is to help the Iraqi government to succeed.”
That is not a strategic objective, that is not a military objective, it’s a political objective.
Bush thinks if he sez it’s a “strategic objective,” via 1984 U.S. Armed Forces magically have the capability and training to do it simultaneously in several different languages.
Would have like to see a follow-up about Posse Comitatus.
angie @ 118
…to go along with ‘embolden’
Hopefully he really WILL bawl, and then there’ll be lots of nice clips online. I hardly ever miss having cable, but right now is one of those times.
good on Kelly calling him on his AQ reference wrt Iraq.
the WhiteHouse sound system is fucked up and is introducing excessive sibilance to the Preznit — sounds like a pit of snakes (vipers)
me to me — Joe has received a quite a bit of money from telecommunications companies that would prefer him to vote AGAINST Net Neutrality. Some of the money came quite late in the race, too, giving the appearance they were looking to make a statement.
(OT….OFG, thanks for your fine recent post!!)
- chimpy will not utter the words ‘civil war’, he called it a ‘cycle of violence’
-he is guessing “or surmise” that the spectacular bombings are done by al qaeda
Malacandra @ 114
Great Catch.
I hope Ned’s campaign picks up on this.
This guy is such a stupidiot.
Blather, Wince, Repeat.
mfkn snakes at a mfkn white house presser?
dubya says that AQ is very active in Iraq and is prolly responsible for some of the more spektakular suicide bombings.
The question on bush wanting Iraqis to express gratitude to the US really had him stuttering too. He looks like one tired guy & hoarse voice…not sleeping well? I hope not because the rest of us sure aren’t.
The Al Quaeda ‘ones’ are the sensational suiciders…!
I swear Chimpy’s “Bushisms” and catch phrases could be used for naming Punk Bands.
“I hardly ever miss having cable, but right now is one of those times.”
NBC is carrying it.
*ilson46201 @ 127
They’re in that brand spankin’ new temporary press room, because the old one – a true dive – is being renovated.
And anyone whose ever done a renovation project knows how long that will last . . . the press corps is both grateful for the project but highly nervous about it reducing their access to west wing folks. (Like that’s gotten them a lot of good stories before the renovation began . . .)
“it would be a huge mistake for the US to leave the region – to concede territory to the terrists”

What OS said!!!
Coxackie virus: that’s my guess for the Peanut’s illness. My own 10 year old just had it. 3 days of fever followed by little tiny blisters on the hands and mouth. Fun. They are contagious for days and eating is a joy. It seems to be common in the summer time. I don’t know if the Peanut goes to daycare part of the week or plays with kids who do but they like to share this delightful virus in the summer.
John Casper @ 129
When we see a great catch like this, to whom should we send it at the campaign? Anybody know?
John Casper @ 136
No antenna either. That’s all by choice. Fortunately, this liveblogging and commenting by people is just as good, if not better.
NeoJoe @ 130
First 707 of the morning!
Bush: “You can’t have a Democracy with an armed political party”.
That’s it! Every republican must immediately report to the nearest police warehouse to hand in their guns.
Somebody let the NRA know they’re officially shut down!
I just took my morning constitutional while listening to Dubya on the teevee. Slowly, the room filled with aromatic symbolism.
“hopefully over time, hezbollah will disarm.”
question about presidential pardons. do u consider yourself stingy on pardons?
“i frankly haven’t compared the # of pardons i have given to those of other presidents. maybe I should.”
(he has grunted after each reporter has asked a question)
dab from CT 7:20 am — it’s that bad and WORSE. “Vets for Freedom” was set up about 31-JUL, probably in sync with Joe’s sagging numbers against Lamont.
The folks behind VFF are known Republican operatives (those that Hillary would clearly label part of the VRWC).
Essentially, VFF is a front for RNC. Somebody was supposed to have written a story about this over the weekend, but it didn’t happen; I think we’re overly fragmented, under-organized and out-resourced on this side of the aisle to make things happen when they should, like hit pieces on VFF. Grrrr…
I never have seen or heard anyone ask him the nuts and bolts religious question:
Since Islam itself preaches against having infidels in its holy places, how will we ever have fewer terrorists while we continue to violate the tenets of their religion by keeping primarily Christian, armed forces on their holy lands?
Follow up: Wasn’t the invasion of Christian troops into the Islamic holy lands during the Gulf War a primary impetus for al-Qaeda?
Peterr @ 141
Thank you.
The pardon he DID give was pretty bizarre, wasn’t it? Some guy who had a bit part in ‘Deliverance’ who was busted for moonshining back in the 60’s.
Q: Asking Bush about Presidential pardons. What is your philosophy?
Bush: We have strict criterion.
Q: $3 a gallon and political price.
Bush: hybrid tax credit; ethanol; diversity away from crude oil . . . but build more refineries.
Q: New Orleans
Prof: oh, I can’t stand doing this. Back to someone with a stronger stomach, like twolf1
“When we see a great catch like this, to whom should we send it at the campaign? Anybody know?”
I just pasted it into Ned’s blog, but I don’t know if that will do any good.
Jane and Christy usually read through the threads, pretty closely along with *ilson and others. If they think it’s worthwhile, I assume they know how to contact whomever does Ned’s “opposition research.“
reporter – 1 yr anniv of katrina. what have u dont to fix problems and prepare.

What is a 707?
I have the sound off for the presser – - getting the play-by-play from all y’alls.
Golly, he looks bad. Looks like he could use a vacation.
Oh, wait . . . .
His Katrina comments just made me throw up on my desk.
what little dog said at 145
katrina still -
“more work that needs to be done – especially in housing. each state needs housing recovery plan. i thought it best there be a local plan developed and implemented by local folks”
those Vets for Freedom are VietNam hawks — shouldn’t it gall them to be backing a dude like Joe who was against the Nam war and was a draft-dodger? (not that there’s anything wrong with that. I was)
bill, I just warned people about needing a strong stomach. Leave the sound off and leave the live-blogging to twolf1

$110 billion dollars and they can spend it any way they want? *whistle* I’m a disaster in my own right. where do I apply?

707 is LOL when it tips you over backwardsout of your chair laughing…
John Casper @ 153
Thanks, John Casper.
Seems like it would be a good idea for campaigns to have an office that functions as a suggestion box.
The netroots have already shown that we are a pretty good “truth squad”, so it’d be nice if they would make use of what we find.
a local plan developed and implemented by local folks
with money paid under no-bids to friendly, pro-me companies, who then use illegal immigrant labor that they don’t pay.
It’s a win win situation for everyone that counts – Me and the Pro-Me guys.

What is a 707?
707 is LOL upside-down… as in falling backwards out of one’s chair>

bill — if he says anything about Katrina, we should nail him on it.
I’m with Mary upthread. Over the next 30 days we should nail Lieberman to Bush with the Brownie mess; every single American can relate to the fear that they will face a disaster and be left out to hang by this administration. DHS bought ads using kids to promote “You’re on your own for 72 hours after a disaster” — but we can all point to Katrina and the 100,000 refugees who’ve not returned to NOLA as proof that this administration will f*ck you over for YEARS in your own backyard.
Malacandra @ 115
So, which is it Joe? Are you a flip-flopper or terrorist sympathizer?
Did you notice how he made a point of saying that Mississippi was doing a better job than Louisiana? I guess that means Trent Lott’s porch is coming along nicely.

bush – we r very involved in 6 party talks. They r an important part of our strategy in dealing w/ kim jong Ill

Period.

“send signal to troops that sacrifices they made were for nothing”
“nothing to do w/ patriotism and everything to do w/ the way we live”
“judges nsa decision was a terrible one”
Did this moron just turn a Lamont question into an un-ending tirade about how we can’t leave Iraq without ever addressing the question?
Wow… He can’t even remember the question he was asked by the time he’s 20 seconds into his version of an “answer”.
Man chasing tail.
Bush: Hezbollah to blame for civialian deaths in Lebanon
Helen: But it was Israeli bombs
Bush: State within state
Lesson: Killing civilians? If you are state within state, bad. If you are, a state, good.
Civil war in Iraq? Talk about terrorists
Iraq in general? Get out by staying in. Adapt by doing more of the same. Oh yes, and all this takes time. Apparently forgets it’s been more than 3 f*cking years!
$3 gas? World market thingies. Speculation fueled by insane foreign policies? Not mentioned.
Katrina? Progress? Let’s talk about money going out the door.
Leaving Iraq will make us less safe. Unsaid, staying there makes us less safe.
Clueless says, “It’s all about understanding the world in which we live.” As close as we will ever come to self criticism, even if unwitting.
the front people for VFF are the VietNam hawks who are being paid and used by the RNC to support Lieberman. Those front people at VFF must feel like unpatriotic whores for supporting a draftdodger …
Anytime I hear someone claim a threat from al Qaeda taking over in Iraq if we leave tells me they fundamentally don’t understand Iraq, and Joe claimed exactly that again Sunday on Face the Nation. Any horseshit reason for not leaving Iraq is better than that one.
With the US military gone from Iraq, AQ outsiders will have no leg to stand on and would get drummed out. With the US military gone, acceptance of foreign influence from Iran amongst Iraqi Shia probably would stand to diminish considerably as well, but not as much as that for al Qaeda.
When you are experienced as unholy and the WORST foreign presence by all sects, your effect tends to be one of making acceptable those who previously were not tolerated or welcome (the enemy of my biggest enemy is my friend). Joe must go.
Now he’s lecturing the press corps about Iraq… Cuz they JUST DON’T GET IT!
“Thats why I give Tony Balir the credit, and his government the credit.”
Was I hearing things, or did somebody cough “blowjob” when he said this?
He’s yelling again.

-bush- i’m gonna stay out of connecticut
Lamont is correct that “[Lieberman’s] new-found ‘criticism’ of the war won’t convince Connecticut voters after so many years of stubbornly rubber-stamping Bush’s failed policies.”
Worse yet, Lieberman has yet to recind his smug accusation that American’s who prededed him in criticizing the President’s policies jeopardized the welfare of the nation: “It is time for Democrats who distrust President Bush to acknowledge that he will be Commander-in-Chief for three more critical years, and that in matters of war, we undermine Presidential credibility at our nation’s peril.”
bush staying out of CT b/c the GOP suggests it and there are better places to spend their money.
Again he won’t answer questions…
Joking about a reporter up fronts suit and never answered…
Now he’s saying, “I’m a caring guy… I listen to people!” The idiot can’t even listen to the question he’s being asked.
Digby pointed out the other day about the Dueling Pagents–Katrina and 9/11–both anniversaries are fast approaching. Republicans will herald the “bullhorn moment” as a symbol of manliness, and the Democrats will herald Katrina as a symbol of incompetence. The question is whose message will resonate the best this close to the elections? Digby is awesome. If you haven’t read the post, do so. If nothing else, just lok at the pictures, they pretty well sum it up.

Whoa! Is there a global war of terror? Who knew.

Conflation, non sequiturs, strawmen, platitudes, kitchen sink, you name it, it’s there.
Still he’s fair minded. You can disagree with him. It’s not unpatriotic even if doing so will lead to major catastrophic disaster and complete moral failure for the country.

Where is that question: Mr. President, are kidnappings and torture “tools law enforcement needs” to do its job?
That Lamont answer was the most inane thing I’ve ever heard.
Leaving Iraq will create global disaster. But its a legitimate debate. Except the people that raise the issue are helping the enemy. But we don’t criticize their patriotism – they just don’t listen carefully to what we say, do they? hehuhehuhhehuh

Ok, you win that summary contest. *g*
Iraq, 9/11, we didn’t say Hussein ordered 9/11, (btw – remember the terrorists will follow us here if we leave Iraq[umm, does that mean they aren’t already here?])but 9/11 9/11 9/11. I SAW a threat. So we had to blow the country up. Bc I SAW it.
Unlike that Memo that said Bin Laden was determined to strik in the US.
ARRRGHHHH
Tools to do the job. Tools to do the job. Tools do do the job.
Wouldn’t a less idiotic President be a great tool for them getting the job done? Has Bush, discreetly, requested his own impeachment?
Kagen, smiling, starts out commentary emphasizing the “light-hearted banter”. CNN must know how to drown out the background voices during Malveau’s report. The rehash is rarely any better than bush himself.

No problem John Casper, anjinsan, Dr. Bong et al. It’s my meager contribution to the great commenters at FDL. My live blogging can be hard to follow and unintelligible at times – but so can Kommander Chimpenstein ;)
Bush: No one ever suggested that Saddam Hussein was responsible for 911.
Pre-war notification to Congress sent March 18, 2003 one day before the start of the Iraq War. He states he intends
So nope, never happened. In fact, there was very little talk about it.
Has Bush ever said before “Nobody’s ever suggested in this Administration that Saddam Hussein ordered the attack (on the World Trade Center).”? Schieffer (I was watching CBS) didn’t even mention this in his summary, but I believe there are many Americans who would be surprised to hear the president make this statement.
Hugh @ 244
Nice catch!
angie @ 241
I’ll go further and say Chimpy pretty cruel.
So which is it? He did not have the courage to criticize the President? Or he did not have the courage to do so publically? Or he not only lacked the courage to criticie the President in public abut also was so spineless that he needed to praise the very same person he in fact had reservations in regards to?
Victimhood doesn’t suit you well, Joe. Buck up and stick to the bed you’ve made.
Peterr @ 112
Thank you, Peterr.
Can’t find it, Peterr. I don’t know if it’s me or you. Oh well.
I recognize that Gregory Djerejian is not exactly your ideological soulmate, but if you want to read a really effective evisceration of Lieberman’s Johnny-come-lately “Rumsfeld should resign” position, check out belgraviadispatch.com.
Money quote:
“I suspect this is the kind of thing that gets the so-called netroots so steamed at Lieberman. I mean, it gets me steamed, given that I thought Rumsfeld should have been frog-marched out of the Pentagon after Abu Ghraib, much less be defended by an opposition party statesman who is supposedly a leading ‘conscience’ politician or such. And now, with rather convenient timing given the Lamont challenge, Lieberman comes out more, shall we say, plainly against Rumsfeld. Not particularly elegant, it must be said, and rather of the too little, too late variety, no? I’m certainly underwhelmed and this despite being a fervent Rummy critic who, I suppose, should be quite happy indeed anytime a major politician comes out calling for his head. But for some reason this call for Rumsfeld’s resignation leaves me strangely unmoved and unpersuaded. It smells, frankly.”
LindyH, Your comment is at 98,
“These people keep harping at the poor about wanting a free ride. There is NO poor person getting a freer ride than the wealthy elite and large business concerns.” (I left out the links here, for fear of moderation.)
I agree—how do we get the very people who need a safety net, who believe that the poor are selfishly sucking up all this money, but cannot see what the wealthy are doing, to understand who is really on (corporate) wellfare here? How do we cut the legs out from under the Republican argument that Repubs will cut your taxes?
The most important statement I heard made at the DNC in Chicago was made (I think) by the new financial officer that (paraphrasing) “Of the 10 trillion dollars debt this country holds today, 8 trillion of it was racked up by three Repub’n administrations—Reagan, Bush and Bush—and paying the interest alone on that debt accounts for 40% of every individual’s personal income tax.” Now how do the R’s get to campaign on lowering taxes?
OldCoastie @

Doesn’t matter. They’re preparing to heave Bush over the side, and then consolidate their authoritarian gains.
LindyH,
You have to refresh the whole page (F5) to see it show up as having been removed from moderation.
OTOH, every so often a comment just disappears . . . it’s a mystery.
Let’s face it, Joe: that’s not the greatest creative leap ever undertaken by a political candidate.
weeder @ 253
I would love to have a link to that statement. Who said that? We should spread it far and wide.
ReneND,
I’m trying to find a transcript—it was broadcast on CSPAN. The speaker, I believe, was introduced as formerly of Goldman-Sacks. This is from memory, but he spoke briefly and made that point so clearly, I thought it could be very important to Dems’ campaigns.
Got pole-axed by jr’s presser this a.m.
I gather others were just as, um, impressed. He never ceases to amaze.

ReneND,
I still can’t find a transcript, but here is a quote from a Bloomberg article on the meeting:
But the statement I remember was said by someone other than Dean—same idea though.
Seems to me the Swift Boaters or VFF or whatever could be castrated by some really nasty scandal attached to them. Same for many other RNC operatives. Are there no sleuths on our side with the wherewithal to do this? Why do only the Repubs dish up the trash on their opponents? Let them eat some of their own, well, mud for a change.
Bush kept refraining “imagine” in his blather this morning? Well, imagine this.
During this morning’s press conference, President Bush sent me running for my Webster’s.
A reporter tried to follow up on a question the president was circumventing but not answering. “Don’t interrupt me,” Bush chided, “I’m perorating.” He chuckled to himself and then added, “Look it up in your dictionary.”
And so I did.
Perorating. v. 1. To conclude a speech with a formal recapitulation. 2. To speak at great length, often in a grandiloquent* manner.
*Grandiloquent. adj. Pompous or bombastic speech or expression.
Ah, yup. That sums things up rather nicely.
He made me into a cheerleader for George Bush on everything that’s happened
Ah, so it was all Ned Lamont’s doing, eh?
Then perhaps you could explain why many of us considered you a Bush cheerleader long before we’d ever heard of Ned?
All the writhing, evil tentacles of the Republicants lead back to one central putrid core…the repellant radical rogue, Karl Rove.
