A good ad should either
1. convince someone who might not have voted for you to consider you or
2. convince someone who might waver later that ur a good choice or

Convincing people that are already going to vote for you no matter what to continue to vote for you isn’t helpful. I can’t see how anyone can look at this ad and think that it does either #1 and #2. Yes, it is that bad as a political ad.
I think pow wow touched on the onderlying reason why. It comes down to the impression that someone is left with from watching the ad (i.e. tone). Starting with the canned, wooden deliver which conveys untrustworthyness, to the way she is being “introduced.” If you want to introduce someone in an ad for political office, you need to do it as a by product of ur main message. The ad comes across as, “yeah, you’ve never heard of her, but really, she done some good stuff.” The doesn’t stack up well against the desired persona of a congressperson which is powerful, polished, and articulate.

I’m not saying that the content isn’t true, or that she wouldn’t make a good congressperson, or that the points she makes aren’t valid. But as a political ad (something to achieve #1 or #2 above), yeah, it really is that bad guys.

Darcy Burner’s ad is exactly what we need - it’s aspirational and doesn’t spend time trashing the other guys. We need more leaders who fit that mold - leaders interested in breaking us out of the status-quo and moving America forward. It’s time to break the evil cycle of D vs. R.

Burner was chosen by Twenty-First Century Democrats (www.21stdems.org) for a reason - she has the potential to be “our next great leader”…the next JFK or MLK.

She’s right on - this needs to be about who she is and what she’s going to do for America - how she’s going to promote her progressive ideals. Not about how much the other guys suck!

I would ask everyone who thinks it’s “not that bad” (personally I don’t pay for “not that bad” but to each his own) to look once again at this ad and tell me it is not more effective:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....search=Ned Lamont

I never thought a political ad would make me laugh out loud. That’s classic.

So to summarize: half the people here think Darcy Burner’s ad stinks, the other half think it’s not so bad. Ringing endorsement, that.

no need to wince. the commercial is a marketing tool that quite accurately captures a certain kind of sincere, insipid, skin-deep quality that permeates american politics.

I don’t like this ad, either, mostly because it seems so … pleading. The candidate seems downcast. It has a hand-wringing sort of tone to it.

I don’t like the heavy emphasis on military, myself. It seems overdone. Say it once or twice, but don’t say it and send the word floating across the screen at me multiple times. It seems manipulative, used in lieu of having something substantive to say about the issues.

One gal’s opinion.

Bonnie wrote:
I an originally from Washington State and remember the days Slade Gorton was Governor.

Hmm. Born and raised in the Evergreen State, and I can remember our governors all the way back to Al Rosselini, but I only recall Skeletor as a Senator, not as governor. He was defeated by Maria Cantwell, who is better though far from perfect (I was really pissed about her Alito cloture vote; while Patty Murray is always portrayed as a ‘dim bulb’, she is much better on many issues).

On the topic, though - I actually saw the ad during the local evening newscast last week, and I thought it was actually decent. It emphasizes her family background (military brat), and the fact that she had to work her way through college. So I think it introduces her to voters - frankly, most folks outside of the netroots and local public radio listeners haven’t a clue who she is, so she does need to introduce herself somehow.

As dolly says @487, just what was she supposed to do? I don’t think it would look too good to see spittle flying during that first ad, anyway.

I am a media person. This is is just an unimaginative feel good approach that is about 60% of what is delivered. The middle of the country will like this ad. It does not confuse, denounce or cause tension. She looks clean, smart, and capable. I really don’t think it is that bad. What do you want her to do? Scream that Bush is an idiot and she will vote to impeach him? That won’t work either. Most ad/campaign agencies are very conservative in their approach to selling the “product”. No contraversary, no pain.
Relax she should be able to sell her message herself. in public.

Whats the point of making an ad not targetted at the coasts when youre running for a district in the seattle suburbs?

Joel Hanes @

This is a brilliant ad for its intended audience. which is not, obviously, FDL
or its commenters. It’s designed to play in Peoria, not on the coasts.

My [Republican] Mom would be charmed by
the obvious non-profit 501(c) production values.
