Alan, I’m a partisan, okay? You are, too. Let’s pretend we’re at the Capitol Club knocking back some fine Laphroaig, okay? Is it just us, off the record? Good.
I feel your pain.
Here you are, a party guy, in both senses of the word. No sin in that. Look at the other guys on the Hill, what they’ve been up to lately. A little card counting? Puh-leeze! Sleezier shit than that can make you Ambassador to the U-Fucking-N. Gimme a break.
You won the endorsement of your state party. You’re all green light gaga over preemptive strikes against Iran: that should make the guys at Redstate and LGF sport tiny, stubby woodies, right? Right. You want to gut Social Security and fight the white man’s fight against the dark Latino horde swarming at the border. Medicare? Fuck the poor, the middle class and the old and the infirm, all the way: you’re a true President’s man. And now the national Republican Party – your party!- is going full guns a blazin’ for Joe Party-of-One Lieberman.
What a stab in the back!
I mean, on my side, I’m pissed the DC incumbent establishment is selling out my party and Ned Lamont by continuing to give support to Joe during what should be his Norma Desmond death march. It pisses me off. Lamont and the voters in our base worked hard, very hard, to get a candidate through the primary system who really represents our values. And you and your people, you must feel the same thing: the President and his Mayberry Macchiavellis are selling you and your conservative base voters down the river because they don’t have the balls to fight for your conservative agenda. Are you kidding me? How pathetic!
I have to give you some mad props, my friend: that Hardball performance was fantastic. You smiled all the way through, while Tweety gave you the Karl Rove fax machine knuckle massage. Rove and his people really don’t want Matthews’ conservative and moderate viewers to see that there’s a true conservative in this CT senate race, and Tweety did his best to make you look like a schmuck. But you kept cool. You kept smiling. I admire that: you’ve got pluck. "Plucky," that’s what you are. You’re my plucky friend.
I wonder how many movement conservatives feel just the way I do as a movement progressive, watching the DC plutocracy screw over our candidates, over and over. You know, let’s catch some of this bipartisan fever, you and me. No no, take your hand off my leg. That’s not what I meant. Ahem.
If there’s ever anything I can do for you, my friend (other than, you know), just let me know, because that performance on Hardball was pure gold. Alan Gold, as it were. Cue the James Bond music: "Gold. Alan Gold." I like the way that sounds.
I gotta go: let me get the tab, Alan. Save your scratch for the Mohegan Sun. See ya at the debates. You’re gonna kill!

Hey Pach!
what’s Schlesinger’s position on pole-smokers getting hitched?
*ilson46201 @ 2
Are you asking about his pole position in this race?
Eli @ 3
did I ask whether he’s a top or a bottom? didn’t think so !
Missionary!
Pachacutec!
This is the best writing I’ve seen you do yet!
Pach: I want to post this but I don’t remember who wrote it.
”A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN”
Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.
All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer’s medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance – now Joe gets it too.
He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe’s bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.
In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.
Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.
He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.
Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe’s employer pays these standards because Joe’s employer doesn’t want his employees to call the union.
If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he’ll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some stupid liberal didn’t think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.
It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe’s deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe’s money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.
Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.
Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the tax-payer funded roads.
He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers’ Home Administration because bankers didn’t want to make rural loans.
The house didn’t have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn’t belong and demanded rural electrification.
He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn’t have to.
Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn’t mention that the beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: ”We don’t need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I’m a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have.”
Ahem. FITZ!!!
The RNC has given ol’ Alan the “Goldfinger”, methinks.
Yeah, I saw Tweety again last night rippin’ on your “plucky friend”. I think he wants to get Alan out of the way so his bung hole buddy, Holy Joe, can sail on through.
Way to reach across the aisle, there, Pach.
My sister sat next to Tweety at the beauty parlor. I asked her if he had actually had tinfoil in his hair and she said, “You bet!”
Joe’s Norma Desmond death march…oh the resemble lol. Good one Pach!
Schlesinger actually has some fairly impressive credentials, although as a three-time loser in Congressional races he may have become somewhat of a political joke in Connecticut (and that was before Rove went to work on him).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Schlesinger
Do you think Tweety dyes his hair, Jane? I noticed last night that it all looks kind of white, but with a yellowish caste, as if he dyed it so he won’t look like a blue-haired old lady!
Great post Pachacutec–definitely worth staying up for. Especially this: You smiled all the way through, while Tweety gave you the Karl Rove fax machine knuckle massage.
The Bush/Coulter Republicans have outsourced the Nanny-state to Big Brother.
-GSD
Jane S. @ 8:19 pm (#12) – Was he having dark streaks added? I only ask because sometimes hair that’s one color looks rather featureless on camera.
Cujo359 @ 11
Especially since Golden Boy tried to reach around the aisle.
Tweety’s hair definitely changes color, I thought he put blonde in it, and I think my sister was serious about the tinfoil. The salon in question is well known for doing color.
Hey Cujo, thanks for the comment at Taylor’s earlier. Its always good to see FDL folks pop up in the comments on my pieces there.
I think Alan needs a little love. Just, you know, not that kind of love. At least, not from me.
neurophius @ 8:23 pm (#14) – He seems to have a hard time getting elected. Is he bad at communicating with the public? If card counting is the worst thing he ever did, he’s certainly no master criminal. Heck, I don’t even think that counts as cheating.
Pachacutec @ 22
HE JUST NEEDS SOME LOVE IS THAT SO RAAAAWWWWWWUUUNNNGGGGGG?
Gah I linked the wrong clip! This is the Norma Desmond death march hehe…the other one was just her lurching around and acting liebermanesque :)
Cujo359 @ 22
He also had gambling debts, and lied about it. Not good in a candidate for the Senate.
He’s toast.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 8:27 pm (#21) – Glad I saw it. It’s a good rundown. Will there be more?
Well, George H.W. Bush didn’t get elected to the Senate, and didn’t get the presidential nomination in 1980, before he did get elected President in 1988…
Maybe the occasional tinfoil treatments have been causing Tweety to come around and get tough on Deadeye Dick Cheney and the war as of late?
If so, let’s send e-mails telling him how fabulous his hair is.
-GSD
Even though he has been hitting against the war hard lately I don’t think he’ll be saying: “We’re all Ned Lamonts now.”
Even though he has been hitting against the war hard lately I don’t think he’ll be saying: “We’re all Ned Lamonts now.”
Everyone likes Ned Lamont except a few whackjobs on the right.
Riesz Fischer @ 8:32 pm (#26) – He also had gambling debts, and lied about it. Not good in a candidate for the Senate.
Yes, that’s bad, at least the lying part. That’s where security risks start – when people have something to hide.
Cujo359 @ 27
Yes sir, I’m doing all of them 7 or 8 at a time until I run out of Fighting Dems to cover. I agree, their website is atrocious though.
Jane S. @ 20
Jane S: Speaking of tinfoil, I did respond to you in the previous thread.
Lovely job, as usual, Pach. You might want to correct the headline if you can. It says I feel “you” pain. When you think of it, the GOP really is treating Schlesinger very badly. He volunteered to be the sacrificial lamb, but I don’t think he expected that the hand holding the knife would be Rove’s. I did like Ned’s crack on one of the shows, though. He said that if Lieberman dropped out, it would still be a three way race: Lamont, Schlesinger, and Gold. Heh.
I can’t think about Tweety without remembering him talking about “getting too towel-snappy” with Bush. Imagine those two guys together in a locker room…no, on second thought, don’t.
I will ask my sister to compliment his hair and try to determine his politics. She saw Teresa Heinz Kerry at the same salon and she did say hello. We love Teresa. (I can’t remember if she spells it with an “H”.)
neurophius @ 35
MY EYE!! MY MIND’S EYE IS BLINDED!!
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 8:34 pm (#32) – Sad thing is, if I knew what the main page address was, I could write a patch for their front page in about five minutes. It’s just really bloody stupid to do a website that way – assuming you want anyone to visit it.
BarbaraB: Done; thanks!
Riesz Fischer @ 26
That presumes an informed electorate. I’m not convinced of that one bit.
So let’s go find the WMD’s in Iraq that over 50% those polled recently still think Iraq has ; )
Pachacutec @ 39
You’re welcome. BTW, CTKeith has a very interesting comment EPU’d on the last thread. All about what Joey was really doing on those civil rights marches back in the ’60s. Y’all might go have a look.
For Bonkers–I think b/c my Mom is cool, and evolves with the times, that I don’t have tolerance for those who don’t. And I definitely agree that their are a lot of DC insiders who fight change b/c the status quo butters their bread (at the likes of I Ricchi no less).
A related rant that I have been on lately involves something I read years ago in Stephanopolous’ book about the Clinton White House. He discussed how much Hillary hated Dick Morris and “the movement of Clinton to the middle”. Stephanopolous identified her as a true liberal sickened by the whole thing. And now, here she is, supporting an amendment to ban flag burning. I don’t know how she lives with herself…
BarbaraB @t 8:42 pm (#41) – Makes me wish someone could interview those old acquaintances of Joe’s.
When the time is right those folks will step forward and help sink the HMS Lieberman.
Hey, here is an idea. What if the progressives actually support Alan? I mean what is easier – Ned taking a vote away from Lieberman or Alan claiming a vote for himself from the right side? Either way Lamont comes out ahead!
It seems to me, it would be a hoot to go campaign against Joe from the right – using his own words how much he is a democrat, having voted 90% of the time with the dems and how he marched in the hated civil rights movement a.s.o., a.s.f. We could represent Lieberman to the Republican voters as totally unacceptable, a lefty pinko! How much fun would that be!
Well, that made me smile! Now where’s that Highland Park I stashed.
WAAAAAAA!!! I posted the link to Kris Kristophersons new anti-war song on the last thread. Did anybody see it? Or is it old news since I wasn’t here yesterday?
I’m feeling a little neglected.
Good post Pach. I have to admit to feeling a little confused by the RW. They invite Ned on Faux and actually treat him pretty well. CNN after dissing him, gave him airtime and Tweety seems to like him. What in the hell is going on?
Evening all! I have been enjoying FDL all day – the comments in the last thread reminded me again that FDL is one place on the internets I feel relatively un-ripened — most sites seem to think I should feel all wrinkly just for being born before 1980.
Cujo359 @ 43
Not here a whole lot, but there was someone here at FDL named ‘radlib1,’ who said he was Jumpin’ Joe’s roommate in college. I kept asking him to end all of this for us and spill the beans about some Joe college sex-capade, you know, boy “experiments”, orgy, what have you, and he kept assuring me there was nothing to tell. Not sure what to think of the “rumor.” Is ‘radlib1′ here much to clue us in more?
Kickass article, kickass video clip! I agree 100%.
But let’s look at the hypothetical fracturing of two dominating parties:
First of all, the ideal fracturing (like NFL-style “parity”) would be into FOUR parties, each attracting between 20 and 30 percent of the electorate.
However, that possibility is virtually zero, because if either of the major two parties gets close to a split the other party will focus all its energy into leaping at the throat of the stronger of the (now) two threats.
And a three way split would most likely result in two new parties sharing 40%, with 25% genuine unaffiliated and 35% other party.
This makes victory for the unsplit party now much easier, guaranteeing a long-term dominance in political office.
IOW, if Ned had lost the primary in a squeaker, and was currently trailing, how much Republican support could he be able to count on? Lots, I would wager.
It’s all about backing “the spoiler”.
The headlines would be screaming, “Ned Lamont and the GOP: Unlikely Partners?”
Titanyum @ 45
I brought that up a couple of days ago but got EPU’d I think
Where’s the OUTRAGE from the pro life gang???
http://www.ctfamily.org/about.html
The RNC supports ABORTION by not backing the Republican canidate????
And, BTW, how come “edit this comment” and “make reply” lead to the same place? I wanted to edit one time and ended up double-posting.
Jane S. @ 42
I’ve had some people tell me to quit critiquing Hillary since she has such a commanding lead in polls. “She’s our best chance to win!” they belch over and over. One question for people who say that, “Four months ago, when Ned Lamont was behind something like 40% in polls to Leaverman, did you also say ‘get behind Joey Low Road because he has such a commanding lead?” Man, thank goodness the people of CT didn’t follow the same reasoning. Like Lamont was to Jumpin’ Joe, there are alternatives this time to the DLC’ers, like Hillary.
(Repost: I posted this in a thread a couple of days ago, but I wanted to catch the Late Night crowd.)
Hey, gang,
Ms. Redshift and I are going to be out in the LA area next week at the World SF Convention; do any area firepups want to get together? (The convention’s in Anaheim, specifically, but we’ll have a car at least some of the time.)
bonkers @ 52
I think Democratic voters are positively *starved* for alternatives to the centrist go-along-to-get-alongers.
Just tell your friends to look up Nelson Rockefeller’s poll numbers in 1963. Establishment backed, prohibitive favorite. Goldwater’s movement of rabid lambs ate him up and spit him out.
edit comment, in theory, leads to your original comment turning up in the leave a reply space. Where you can edit and then hit save. And, I am not sure you double posted.
So, Hi? dogstar?
Eli/55–Agreed.
Pach is definitely in da house tonite!
Pachacutec @

Yeah, the “don’t say bad things about Hillary or it will come back to haunt us” people are just as infuriating as the “don’t attack Lieberman because…well we have no good reason but we like him and our heads are up our asses” people.
Give us a lever and a place to stand, and we can move the party back towards the left!
bonkers @ 49
Radlib wouldn’t think there was anything wrong with Joey’s tastes running in that direction. None of us would. But now that Joey is race baiting to get votes from bigots, his new supporters might see things differently. This is not, however, something anyone even remotely connected with the Lamont campaign can raise.
Onward and Upward fellow rabid lambs!!
Or are we “elitist insurgents” now. Oh, I’m so confused. David Broder…please define me for me!

Re Kristoferson:
I saw it, I’m sorry I didn’t say anything. I was sitting here crying. I love it. That old lion still has it, doesn’t he? He’s something.
I think the time is long past for us to be as loud and as insistent as we can be about what kind of representation we want – you know – us, the people, the voters. That means louder than the media, which seems to want to tell us who the candidates should be, louder than the politicians who are littering the landscape, louder than the strategists and consultants who are in it for the money. It’s time “they” listened to us for a change, and listened carefully, and started showing us by their actions that they are hearing us.
I hope we can make that happen in time for the 2008 elections.
Margot @ 64
Thank you so much for answering. I was beginning to think I was invisible. It made me weep too. Yes, he really does still have it, I got chickenskin an inch high when he hit those low notes.
Riesz Fischer @ 15
I’m not Jane, but of course he colors his hair. It’s supposed to be blond.
LOL…
Cozumel @ 50.
Seems we are already a party of 2 “Progressives for Schlessinger”. Let’s not do too good of a job lest Alan wins the general election. Maybe Dr. Laura Schlessinger would join us?
BarbaraB @ 61
Yes, that’s why we need our own Karl Rove. It’s not about his tastes, it’s about him misrepresenting the reason he went to “march” in ‘64. If we really wanted to fight fire with fire, this would be all over the media now. ((I’m kidding, really…don’t want to win dirty now, do we?))
Hugs old Kewalo
(who’s probably way younger than I but what the hell)

And please tell what your name means, or how to say it right?

Tweety will like him til he doesn’t. A week before the election something will tick him off and he will try to take him out. Cannot trust Matthews.
Margot @ 70
LOL I doubt you’re older than I am, I was born in ‘43. Hugs back.
Kewalo is a place name in HI where I lived for more then half my life. K – wallow.
I’ve been so upset since I saw that Sen. Dan Inouye is supporting Lieberman, I can’t imagine how many times I voted for him and thought he was a good democrat. I’m taking it very personally, and have started an email to him a couple of times, but I keep getting emotional, so I’m waiting until I calm down a little to give him a piece of my mind. Now I just think he’s an asshole.
bonkers @ 53
Where were they when Howard Dean was the frontrunner?
Matt speak. Firepups listen.
There are a lot of very long-term friendships in the Senate. Lots of mutual respect as well.
I couldn’t blame someone facing a decision like this.
Joe’s well-liked by a lot of his fellow Senators.
If this plays out without too many personal slams, everyone could come out with something.
Ned could be the leading candidate for State Senator, Governor or a US House seat in two years.
And if Joe retires in six, Ned would be a shoo-in. Ned’s young and healthy, with plenty of chances for future success.
Dogstar, with all due respect–
This country cannot wait one more minute for a reversal of this *&^%$$#!
Joe must go in November– he left the party long ago.
Kewalo, it’s nice to see someone here who can make me feel young — I’m a whole two years younger than you are. Inouye is a member of the Gang of 14, IIRC. He just didn’t flaunt it. With any luck, it will be a gang of 12 come November. And now it’s bedtime. G’night, firepups. Hugs all around.

Mighty fine analysis!
“Follow the money” is still the best roadmap ever invented!
Pachacutec @ 9:42 pm (#74) – Good article. I had vague hopes along these lines, that there would be a little more accountability and a little less insularity in DC thanks to this campaign. As usual, Matt has a much better handle on the particulars than I do.
Kurt @

And it comes complete with an excellent characterization of Joe’s enablers.
Dogstar @ 75
Sorry dude, but ain’t nobody here interested in taking any Repug “Rip Van Winkle” sleeping pills!
The Rovian meme of “just go back to sleep and we Repugs will make everything better” may be a popular home remedy for Wingnutia, but I can guarantee it will never sell here!
Mark my words. If Hilary is the nominee, the republicans win in ‘08.
No question.
Dogstar @ 75
You’re funny.
PS– I could care less how much Senators like Joe and even less for the much vaunted mutual admiration society.
This country needs to purge itself of the incumbency protection meal ticket on so many levels. I want every elected official to love this country first and be a good guardian of our Constitution and live up to the promise of this good nation– the heck with their egos and the back slapping and wheel greasin’. It is just wrong.
The world deserves much more.
Redshift – I am in LA. I fear that the distance between Anaheim and K-town, plus your likely tight schedule, might make it pretty tough to meet up, but am game to aim. I am emailable at my screen name at gmail dot com.

Apparently CT Republicans tend to be the saner sort, more or less a remnant population. I imagine that’s why Schlesinger was given the job of losing to Lieberman. It allows the GOP to say; “ Are you going to vote for the real Republican or some wingnut gambling addict?”. The fact that he has experience losing probably helped. I think that if he starts taking GOP votes away from Joe ,Rove will insist he make campaign appearances with a hooker on each arm and a bottle of MD20/20 sticking out of his back pocket.

does anyone feel that the “feel” around the comment boards here has changed since the burst of publicity a few weeks ago? I haven’t been around all that long, and have been wondering what some long timers think.

I would say yes and no. I was a long time lurker at the old place on blogspot.com and started commenting near the end of that era over there, transitioning to the new site when it launched.
What I’ve noticed is the sheer amount of commenting going on is much more now. If you look through the archives of when the site launched and now, the comment threads didn’t number in the hundreds like they do now. Any uptick in traffic like this site has experienced over time is gonna change the atmosphere a little.
At the same time, its still got a familiar feel that never goes away. The regulars for the most part have stayed regulars with a few dropping off or commenting less. Newer folks like yourself are welcome additions, and we all love finding like minded folks to hang out with.
SteveAudio @ 95
Cool, thanks man!
well – I have trouble putting my finger on it. I ended up writing a piece about it.
River water changes color when it reaches the ocean.
Water here being kind of a metaphor for channels of communication.
Changes come when a channel reaches the great big eyes -
Color being akin to tone and volume as different voices come up-stream,
When the rest of the audience arrives, echoes are replaced by white noise.
It is a natural process metaphor, but the thing itself decides a route,
Reaches a state of mixture with the whole, or coheres within the whole around it.
The words now are spread out some, in the delta, salt mixing with fresh.
Ocean water is flowing upstream, but it probably won’t get too far.
I think what you may be onto is the subtle outside pressure any community feels when attention is diverted toward it. Consider the experiences of FDL like its a young band scoring their first Top 10 hit (the Plame case), their first Gold Record (NSA wiretaps) and their first Platinum record (Ned Lamont) all in the same year.
The band you love so much when you were the first hipster onto them the first show they played together is still the same band, they just have a lot more fans now and it all seems so fast changing and weird. The band doesnt change though, they just get more attention and people everywhere start talking about them more. That provides a lot of outside pressure for the band and its first set of fans and friends.
My conclusion after pondering a while today was that FDL is not going to be eaten by the monster of love — as happens to so many human efforts once they get a hypo full of attention.
this has already probably been covered, but since I’m just getting to it – from the LA Times:

Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 106
yes – I am not sure that when they do it you can really call it “thinking”
“GOP sees Strategic Advantage in Court Loss on NSA Wiretapping”
We need to start getting the word out better: President Bush Broke the Law.

I’m hoping Kerry really gets his back up tomorrow a.m. on This Weak… we will see…
astralplame @ 103
The first wave of attention the Ladies of the Lake received from the Plame Affair made me worry about the same shit, then they did what they do which is take it in stride, and kept doing what they do best. Jane, Christy, Pach, TRex, et al are the most level headed folks around no matter what amount of attention is on them. They’re unflappable like that, it’s one of their attractions.

Shyeah. Level headed. That’s me.
I hope you all realize the NSA decision will be overturned. It can’t NOT be overturned.
Even lawyers who support the decision, in principle, say it’s undefendable upon appeal.
Obviously, overturning will not be the end of the story. If NSA defenders can’t show Constitutionality under expert questioning, in the long run it will not survive.

haven’t had quite as much access to the internets this past week… just the standard boob tube fair…
FFT – I’ve been here a long time, and personally I believe there are more self congratulatory and hagiographic comments in the threads, which I don’t see as a change for the better. But that’s me.
I also believe that there are more assertions of “facts” without any support offered to back them up in the comments, which I also don’t see as a change for the better. But that’s me too.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 121
Shyeah. Level headed. That’s me.
Well for you, I was mainly referring to the levelness of your haircut ;)
You could stand a martini glass on it and never spill a drop.
OldCoastie @ 122
That explains it. If I had to rely on boob toob coverage only for news I think I would rather have my eyelids pierced shut and my ears stuffed with candlewax.
OldCoastie – Sweet Bettie is as sweet as ever today – though she barked at one of the boys who practices skateboarding in the back parkinglot. I don’t know if it was the skateboard or the hat (she doesn’t seem to like hats). How are your dogs? (jealous of the higher number of pets)
well, VeryOldMother had surgery this week and I had the duty… no internets at her house, only the tv…
Dogstar @ 120
As I said a wee bit ago, the simple response to this is:
Get a warrant, stupid!!!
oh, astral, don’t be jealous of “multiple” – enjoy the only child for awhile longer… the big guy has a sister because I haven’t had as much time to think up new games for him to play… (though I am getting a kick out of the pup – she’s just so new to the world that it makes her foolish and bright).
both are fine, but the big fellow has been staring at me this evening because he’s hungry and trying to implant the word “bisquits” into my brain…
Evil Parallel Universe @ 123
That’s not an unfair criticism, I know what you mean. That sort of thing goes with the larger number of folks around here. Not saying its good or bad, just making an observation.
The convenient facts made of air are annoying though. Thats why I try to qualify statements of my opinion versus statements of fact. At least I hope I try to make that clear. I sometimes comment here so late at night in total insomniac mode though. If it’s after 2am EDT consider this my notice of any ol bullshit may fly out of my lips by accident.

Loserman is no longer a Dem.
Plame is about outing a CIA operative in time of war.
The Wurlitzer tries to get our point bogged down in minutia, weaseling over definitions, trying to get us off message so our message is not heard.
OldCoastie – Beware the doggy psychic powers! I have always been used to multiple pets, dogs and cats, but a one room apartment that has two people can’t comfortably fit more than the one dog. It is how things are now, but I miss the furry horde.
[It is similar the excuse my fella gave the neighborhood kids as to why he and I don’t have a baby – “See, it’s the rules in our building – if you have a dog, you can’t have a baby” – and they believed him!).
I hope your mother is recovering well -

VeryOldMother is doing well, thank you (the hard part was getting to surgery without excess dramatics breaking out)… it’s hard to be 87,… but she’s a tough ol’ bird.
I bet, if you are used to a horde that you’d miss it… I’ve had a dog and a cat (and a dog and a cat and a bird, but having a complete food chain didn’t work out so well), but this is the first time I’ve had 2 dogs…’specially with both of ‘em being big

Old Coastie – Don’t worry about it. It is no different than any other GWOT/fear theme the repugs bring out that THEY believe will turn chimpy’s and repugs’ numbers around. They lost a majority of the public a while ago even though they incessently and loudly harp on the GWOT/fear issue – whether it be the “disclosures” that the gov’t bugs terrorist cell phones or tracks money, or anything else, which are also, SUPPOSEDLY, to their “strategic” advantage. The polls disagree.

Three words: Nader was right.

Trust me — it is hard enough for me to be a loyal Dem anyway, but when the actual party politicians can’t walk and chew gum at the same time, what do they expect the rest of us to do?
As for Nader, I am a female — so I can’t like him. LOL
OK, now who’s still here?

I saw a clip of him as a young man, walking with Tip O’Neil (I think) and some others in the capitol. He was very tall, pretty cute, and a definite brunette.
Surprised the hell out of me, because he’s been gray/ blonde as long as I can remember him.
Can we assume that Pachacutec will produce a roman-a-clef of Beltway 2006?
I’m headed out too. ‘nite, all. I left a fresh pot ready to go for the morning crowd. Just gotta plug it in.
Good Morning FDL, I’ve got the coffee going, and there’s a coffee cake in the oven (”Fanny Farmer” whole wheat coffee cake recipe, it’s a good one)
And here’s the WaPo’s Talk Show line up.

O.K. as you wake up this morning, or get home from your night at the roadhouse be sure and check to link above to MyDD. It really spells it out clearly and forcefully what’s going on and why Lieberworst MUST GO. Matt really nails it and we need to internalize that message.
And Pach,
thanks for keeping the fire going tonight. it’s been kinda quiet, but everybody needs to kick back now and then……….
hi beard,
can’t stick around but glad you got here before the fire got too low……
HEH-lo, beardy mit coffeecake!

HAPPY BIRFDAY TO YOU, OLD COASTIE !!!

Oooh, the pears, baked into the cake turned out awfully well, and smell fantastic (just peel, slice, and layer between the cake goo)
Good Morning, Lotus!
I’m still working on the huge calligraphy project, and, I’ve started the tunic. I’ve got the body mostly assembled, but I’m futzing with the sleeve and the hem. I just got a deadline on it, I want it done by the end of September.
(drat — mis-posted this below — mo’ coffee, please, beardy!)
prostratedragon @ 145
Oh yay-ezz, do.
So it’s the pears that make this place smell so good, beardy? Whoa, not sure I can wait for that baby to cool! Howzabout you throw that recipe into the next Pull Up?
Must be awfully satisfying to watch all that beauty flow right out of your fingertips, beardy. But I do worry about your poor eyes. How do you protect them?
Oh *707* Thank you for finding that picture, that’s hysterical! (I’ve seen drag queens in that kind of outfit, really, though they have more fashionable blouses, and better hair)
Here’s some more Sumatran (mellower coffee this morning, it’s raining, and I was awoken by the most amazing thunder clap I’ve ever heard. It went on for almost five minutes and shook a painting off the wall)
For the eyes (and this is good advice for those of us on computers all day, too) pick a time to stop, I stop every fifteen minutes and try to focus on something far away, like out the window or something. That way it stretches the whatsit that makes the eyes focus.
Of course, for the next major project, these 1/8th of an inch letters will seem *huge* I just got some smaller nibs (Huzzah! Microcalligraphy here we come!)
I was awoken by the most amazing thunder clap I’ve ever heard. It went on for almost five minutes and shook a painting off the wall)
Yikes! Wherebouts are you?
Good tip on that refocusing break — wish I’d remember to do it more, myself. Sometimes when I’ve been on here a few hours then get up and drive somewhere, I realize how sloooooowwww my eyes are to get the memo. Just been happening lately . . .
Of course, for the next major project, these 1/8th of an inch letters will seem *huge* I just got some smaller nibs (Huzzah! Microcalligraphy here we come!)
Blimey! What do you do to keep your hand steady (and uncrampy)?
Lotus, I’m up in southern New Hampshire, the lovely town of Wilton, NH. (it really is a pretty town)
That slow focusing thingie is why I started to pay attention to refocusing the eyes regularly. I’d been working on some stumpwork embroidery (micro-embroidery) and couldn’t focus on the computer screen. It helps, but I’m thinking of taking the easy route and getting a special pair of glasses just for the small work.
Oh, I have a slight tremor in my hands, the tiny calligraphy is easier for that, since it’s such a quick stroke that the tremor doesn’t have time to mess it up.
Well, just in general: WOW.
I’m fixin’ to do my morning paper run, but here’s one I’ll point out first:
Just amazing, what things happen when some fool busts his military all to bits, no?
Oh, (unprintable string of profanities here)
You know, while I never had any interest in joining the military, except perhaps, at one time, as one of the librarians, I always had great respect for the institution of the Armed Forces.
That this corrupt, moronic, immoral administration has broken it so effectively continues to piss me off.
I can’t imagine what career military, like Colin Powell and Murtha etc must be thinking when they see things like this.
Believe it or not, I’m still up. Just got here. Matt Stoller’s post at MyDD is the best yet on yesterday’s fuss between TPM and eschaton. My take is that unless Josh Marshall wants to end up going down the same route as Ana Marie Cox, he needs to decide “old school or the future of democracy in America.” I know, it was DK’s guest post, but…..?
It has been raining so hard up here at the southern rim of the Talkeetna mountains that the road between Anchorage and Fairbanks is washed out in five places and a sizable bridge is out. My Yukon gold potatoes got creamed in one downpour, so I have to dig ‘em up a month early later today.
My take is that unless Josh Marshall wants to end up going down the same route as Ana Marie Cox, he needs to decide “old school or the future of democracy in America.”
No argument with that here, ET.
(Sorry about your potato crop … and a tad envious.)
How do you store your root vedgies, ET? I remember my grandparents’ potato-&-onion room, but in your climate, their thin-walled shed surely wouldn’t work . . .
Yukon Golds are delicate, both when growing and in how you cook them. they’re also superb for all sorts of recipes. Shoulda talked about this yesterday when Christy pulls up a chair, but.
Did you get a chance to read the article I referenced yesterday afternoon?
Good luck on the potatoes, Ed*ard Teller. That sounds like a hell of a lot of rain up there.
I’ve had no luck with growing potatoes down here, the damned things rot in the ground every time. (like little concealed stinkbombs, it’s kinda gross)
Morning all! Big rains in the Boston area this morning. I am cozing in with the nugget right now. Mrs. Imm returns from Switzerland today!
Love me some Yukon Golds!
Yes, I did read and appreciate it (wish I remember where to go look for it again, in fact). Things certainly fell more nearly into place for me, for the reading, so thanks very much, again.

I have a separate shop – about 1100 sq. ft. I keep it above freezing all winter. It has a huge woodstove, so it gets warm when we’re working or playing music in it. I store the root veggies and potatoes in the shop. I have an old refrig for the carrots. I keep the potatoes, cabbages and beets in cardboard boxes along the windward (coolest) wall.
Hi, imm & cozy-mate, and Happy Landing to Mizriz Imm!
lotus,
Go to Juan Cole’s site and scroll back to Friday. Anthony Cordsman’s article is the first item there. It is a PDF, so I won’t post the link.
Well, ET, your music-vedge-&-workshop and this treehouse of mine are the same size, but yours is definitely the more productive of the two. My space is geared for pure ‘preciatin’ (what I’m good at).
Will do, and right now, ET. See y’all in a bit . . .
As Matt Stoller had the best read on the tpm/atrios scuffle, which is locally important, Juan Cole has a bit to say about yesterday’s Bekaa Valley raid, which is more important:
“Lebanese Shiites in the raided village of Buday are convinced that the Israelis were trying to capture Shaikh Muhammad Yazbek, a senior Hizbullah leader with close ties to Iran’s Supreme Jurisprudent, Ali Khamenei. Yazbek, who is originally from Buday, is said to be a conduit for Iranian money into Lebanon. Hizbullah has spread around thousands of dollars per family to begin rebuilding and to pay rent for the displaced and to recompense Lebanese Shiites for their losses during the war. Since about a million Shiites were affected, if Hizbullah gave each person $1000 (which would be $7000 for a family of seven), that would come to $1 bn. Iran’s oil income this year is projected at $45 bn., up from a little over $30 bn. in the year ending last March 21. In other words, Khamenei can afford to buy some loyalty from Lebanese Shiites.
There is some danger that Hizbullah will retaliate for the raid, which could start the war back up.”

Subject: Now I know why the party has abandoned you
I read the NYTimes article this morning about the Connecticut race. I had also been aware of the Republican’s leadership hesitancy to endorse you. I was curious as to why the Republican party felt that they should abandon one of their own. After visiting your site, the answer is obvious: You are a Republican in the mold of Barry Goldwater, a true fiscal conservative and one whom, I believe represents, the majority of Republicans in this country. The Republican powers have decided that in order to sustain George Bush’s philosophy as the “chosen one”, they need to garner as much support for the Iraqi disaster as they can muster up. They could care less about the economic well being of this country and its citizens as long as their theologic agenda is adhered to.
I want to be completely transparent here. I voted for Kerry, and
I also agree with Lamont’s views about the war (I don’t like using *that* term as we clearly have not declared war, but in fact have decided to use military force to obtain Bush’s and the neocon’s objectives). I do believe that the Republicans in control today are harmful for America and the ideals for which it stands.
I hope you are running away from the Republican leadership. That would make your candidacy more legitimate among most citizens. Don’t make this an issue about Democrats, ” ‘Washington and the media have attempted to hijack this election and turn it into a referendum on the future of the national Democratic Party,â‚ Mr. Schlesinger said in
an interview yesterday”. Turn it into an issue about what has
happened to the Republican party. Run against your own party as a true conservative. You may consider this political suicide, but I don’t see you as having any other choice. Today’s Republican leadership does not reflect Republican thinking. It represents a conceited view of American idealism and is harmful for most Americans. Take a stand as a true Republican, you will get more votes and more attention from others. Call Lieberman what he really is, a self absorbed lame duck.
You don’t mention your views about Iraq on your site, you should clarify those as well. If they are similar to Lieberman’s – you will probably win. If not win, you will certainly turn this into a race and make the country better for it.
Sincerely,
*****************************************************************
Thank you, you do get it. We will consider the strategy.

ruffian,
The shorter the message to a congresscritter, the more chance you will get a response. My rule – positive, succinct, and end with a question they somehow can’t afford not to answer.
You raised some good points, though.
mornin’ folks. how is everyone today?
Fascinating paper, that, ET. Cordesman’s bottom line/last sentence positively rings:
Regardless of how serious the problem may be, it is never proof for the need of an untested and uncosted solution.
Shorter Cordesman: If you want to make a botch-for-the-ages, listen ONLY to AI*AC and your air force.
Now let’s see, who is that Deadeye is listening ONLY to re Iran . . . ?
wish I had written it but no- I am just passing it along…
Ruffian: Well done!
Good Morning Twolf1! Doing well over here, have had to take a break from the calligraphy to move some spiderlings that decided to set up around the computer here (apparently they’re attracted by the World Wide Web) they must have just hatched since they weren’t here an hour ago and they’re still ‘balooning’
Mornin’, firedogs!
I woke up inexplicably early today.
How is everyone?
they must have just hatched since they weren’t here an hour ago and they’re still ‘balooning’
How do spiders balloon?
I remember sunbathing in the backyard one time years ago, flicking at a spider on my beachtowel — and watching in amazement as what landed in its place was a perfect 8″ circle of a bazillion baby spiders!
Good Gracious (as Rummy would say)!
TRex, as I live an’ breathe — what are you doing up???
lotus @ 221
the ties between the air component of the IDF and our air force are the strongest of the ties between our military branches and their supposedly unified “defense” force. and they go back a LONG way. our navy, outside the purely political crowd, acknowledges that the Liberty bombing during the 6-day war was no mistake and has trained with the Israelis seldom and reluctantly. the air force, OTOH, trains regularly with the Israelis.
a 20th century constant was the ability worldwide of air force planners to scam the budget process of their countries into believing the air forces’ sexy claims. The 21st century should be more skeptical about this stuff! We can only hope.
Mornin’, TRex! Fine here. Sunny, relatively cool morning, almost time for a bike ride.

Oh, darkbla-aaaack . . .
Eugh. Baby spiders. Brrrrrr. Me no likey.
Aw, they wuz CUTE, TRex! But so many of ‘em.
Good Morning Trex!
Lotus, the spiderlings send up a long strand of silk, which is caught by any breeze (such as the one from the room fan) and since they’re so tiny, off they go! (they’re kind of cute as they go bungie jumping off the floor lamp)
Hey, TRex, sorry I left so much debris at your incredible post Friday!
A lot of debris here too. Flooding, bridges out and highways cut off. Not only that, but the sky cleared off overnight and the thermometer outside my shop reads 37 degreees right now.
