[FDL welcomes Dr. Victoria Wulsin, candidate for OH-2, to our Blue America series. Dr. Wulsin is chatting with everyone in the comments about her campaign, so please stop by and give her a great FDL welcome. Thanks! -- CHS]
Nationally speaking, southwest Ohio's congresswoman Mean Jean Schmidt had her moment in the national spotlight in November of 2005 when her obscurity came to an end as she lurched into a shocking and psychotic rant on the House floor, accusing respected and decorated war hero Jack Murtha of being a traitor and coward.
Embarrassed, the GOP leadership made her take a time-out. In the aftermath she cemented her place into the Republican Extremist Hall of Shame and she wound up forever on our Schmidt List. But in OH-02, it isn't about a "moment in the national spotlight." They've been stuck with this embarrassment full time. Christy begged asked me to look into her opponent in the upcoming election to be certain if the race was something we could get solidly behind.
I knew absolutely nothing about Victoria Wulsin. And now I can tell you she is positively one of my favorite candidates running for Congress from any district.
Her story is breathtaking and her prescriptions for what's ailing America are exemplary but I want to start someplace else entirely. When I've mentioned Doctor Wulsin to other people who know her– people in the district, Howard Dean, Sherrod Brown– they beam with enthusiasm. It goes beyond the realm of "good candidate" and into the realm of "terrific person."
After interviewing Vic about how to approach America's looming health care catastrophe — and being completely wowed by the depth of her knowledge and her passion on the subject — I threw her a curveball. I asked her if she has a favorite musician. Did she ever! She went from talking about Brahms' Fourth Symphony and Beethoven's Seventh to quoting Bonnie Raitt, the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin and Bruce Springsteen. And then she sang "The Times They Are A Changin'!" And she actually sang it well.
"Dylan spoke for my generation," she told me. Mine too. I felt a real connection with her beyond agreeing that Jack Murtha had a far better solution to the disaster in Iraq than Mean Jean Schmidt.
"People might get the idea that I'm just an academic — a doctor and a professor — but my passions extend beyond helping out in the public realm. I love to play games with my kids and their friends. I love to go camping with my family. I'm a wife and a mom."
And she's a mensch. And how about this? Vic was a housemate of Ned Lamont's at Harvard when they were college students. Her boyfriend was Ned's roommate!
The day after I spoke with her she was having breakfast with Jesse Jackson and after that Howard Dean was coming over to her house for lunch. A day or two earlier she had driven to Adams County with Paul Hackett and some of her volunteers to help an injured iron-worker and his family re-build their storm-damaged home.
Victoria Wulsin is a strong and intelligent woman with a common sense progressive approach. I liked her approach and her completely mainstream, all-American positions on every single issue facing the country. But as a doctor and a very experienced public health expert, her views on health care are more than tangential to her campaign — and to the reasons why it is important for all of us to do what we can to help elect her.
After doing her undergrad honors thesis on the British Healthcare Service, living in London, she spent many years in East Africa working for the Red Cross and for USAID and as the regional advisor for Aids and child survival in Kenya.
For me, if you want to solve the situation in Iraq, you look for an expert like Jack Murtha or Wes Clark, not to chickenhawks like Bush and Cheney and that catastrophic crew. And if you want to start the process of solving the healthcare crisis in America — how about people like Dr. Howard Dean and Dr. Victoria Wulsin instead of botton-line-only-motivated-corporations and the pols they buy?
"Helping to rebuild the health infrastructure in Rwanda," she told me, "gives me an experience of getting results working with diverse factions and being able to stay focused on what's best, not only for the people, but for future generations. One of the weaknesses of our government has been the failure to look forward into the future. Are they even contemplating Global Warming? Budget deficits? The consequences of the occupation of Iraq? Bush and his cronies had two goals. One was to topple Saddam Hussein and the other had to do with getting control of the business opportunities in Iraq. His 'vision' is very short-sighted."
A major part of how Vic looks at herself is as a parent.
"I'm not working just for today. I'm thinking about the future of our children. Biologically I have 4 kids; my organization takes care of 8,000 orphans in Africa. I'm running for Congress for America's 55 million children."
Can Vic win? It's a tough district. And we all know what Paul Hackett accomplished there last year. He came close in a special election. He's a friend and neighbor of Vic's and on her advisory committee. And this year is building in a strong Democratic sweep in Ohio, from top to bottom.
Ted Strickland, the Democratic candidate for governor is wiping the floor with Ohio's arch-criminal Secretary of State, Ken Blackwell and our own Blue America Senate candidate, Sherrod Brown has a solid lead over rubber stamp Republicrook Mike DeWine. Yesterday's Washington Post reported that the GOP has already lost Ohio's "security moms," married women with children.
Still OH-02 is a rough district. Bush got 64% of the vote against Kerry. But now Bush's approval rating in the district is down to 41%. That's good news. But there's better: Mean Jean Schmidt's approval rating is 33%. "People here want change," Vic told me. "They're ready for government to be pro-people."
If you're ready for our government to be pro-people too, there are several ways to help Vic Wulsin move it in that direction. The campaign needs volunteers and you can sign up here. And, of course, the campaign needs cash. Mean Jean Schmidt can get all she needs from the Big Corporations who's puppet she has been in DC. Vic needs to depend on those whose interests she will be fighting for: ours. Please consider our Blue America Act Blue Page. And, as a little incentive, the first 25 contributors will get a rare Bob Dylan CD that has never been sold to the general public: LOVESICK, a 9-song promo that Sony did for Victoria's Secret. (If you are not interested in receiving the CD, please add $.01 to your donation.)
[I never do this with one of Howie's posts, but this is one race in which I'd love to see our Democratic candidate kick some serious butt. If you need added incentive to help out the Wulsin campaign, here it is:

Crooks and Liars has the Countdown report on her despicable action from the floor of the House. (And, because it's Saturday, here's the SNL spoof of Mean Jean's idiotic ranting.) It's not the only reason to support Dr. Wulsin by a long shot -- Dr. Wulsin is a fantastic person, a committed progressive, and has worked on the issues that lift up vulnerable children by providing access to healthcare, among other things, for years, and that's just for starters. But getting Mean Jean out of the House just to raise it's fashion quotient with Mr. Blackwell is reason enough for me. (Kidding...mostly.) Please consider volunteering for the Wulsin campaign if you live anywhere in or near the OH-2. Thanks! -- CHS]

Welcome to FDL Dr. Wulsin! Best of luck in your campaign — and I hope you enjoy chatting with all of us here today.
Gang, because Dr. Wulsin was nice enough to take time away from the campaign trail to be with us here today, I’d appreciate it if everyone could stay on topic in this thread. If you have off-topic issues to discuss, please use the prior thread to do so. Thanks!
Howie! Christy! Jane!
Christy’s addendum hit it right on the head– Mean Jean may be the worst creepy crawly thing in the whole Congress. But there’s an even better reason to work hard for Vic Wulsin. She’s someone who will make a really outstanding congressperson. I’ve never said this on one of our chats before, but this is one on which we should all go the extra mile. It’s winable and it will be a TREMENDOUS difference. Wait til you meet her in a few minutes!!
Howie — thanks so much for putting in the extra work on this one. :) Great article, as always, and a great introduction to the next Congresswoman from OH-2. If we can turn this district blue in November, it truly will be a wonderful, wonderful sign of things to come, I think.
I’m almost ready to kick in my 2 cents or so, Howie, but who was it I missed last Saturday? (I was on the road again.)
P.S. I’m an Ohio resident as of the end of 2005, and I think people here are close to a ‘throw all the Republican bums out’ moment. It’s a matter of getting our voters to show up (and be counted, of course).
Dr. Wulsin,
Thanks for coming here, AND PLEASE WIN!
What is the key to providing better health care coverage for all Americans?
iftthethunderdontgetya, on Wednesday our guest was Sherrod Brown and last Saturday we spoke with Dave Mejias, the Long Island county legislator who’s taking on Peter King.
Hi everybody. Vic here. Thanks for having me Howie and Christy! What a wonderful welcome.
Dr. Wulsin, thank you for running for office. We need more candidates like you.
Republican voters that I talk to believe that health care insurance companies should be allowed to do anything that maximizes profit, and that if some people get hurt, it’s too bad. How do we counter this message?
Ed*ard Teller,
Yours is a crucial question. The first thing we need to do to improve health care is be committed to making it happen. We need to care about health care for all Americans. The current Congress doesn’t.
I don’t live anywhere near OH, but I am going to the Act Blue page to make a donation. Thanks for keeping hope alive.
Funny, I missed last Saturday because I was in Peconic on Long Island. OK I’m in, and can I suggest we all try to get Congressman Murtha to make an appearance on Dr. Wulsin’s behalf?
P.S. I did manage to make in on Wednesday, just after you and everyone else left…I’m pushing the envelope on D_bloggin’ well at work.
Rob Zuber,
Government should be about people, not profits. And we should make that clear to voters.
Health care in particular should put people about the profits of pharmaceutical companies and HMOs. Medicare Part D is the perfect example.
Companies have a right to maximize profits, but they need to do so ethically and responsibly. And profits shouldn’t come at the expense of the well-being of Americans.
tbsa, funny you should mention that. When I spoke with Vic on the phone she was preparing to go meet Jesse Jackson for breakfast the next day.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 10
OK. But do you have suggestions about affordability and reach of the system for the uninsured, for instance?
And did I mention, PLEASE WIN!
Dr. Wulsin – I wish you the best in getting Mean Jean out of Congress! Your experience will be most welcome :-)
What are your views on health issues like the recent FDA ruling that allows spray-on viruses to be added to food (to combat Listeria) but don’t allow labeling the food that has these additives?
Also, what’s your position on pharmacists who don’t fill prescriptions for personal religious reasons?
tbsa,
Thank you so much for your contribution.
This race is winnable. We’re tied, as Howie pointed out, 44%-44% (see here:
http://www.wulsinforcongress.c…..asp?id=877).
The other reason to support this campaign is that, right now, it’s a low-money race. As of July 1, I had $25000 Cash on Hand, and Jean Schmidt had only $17,000.
That means that netroots support goes a long long way in this race. Your dollars mean more here than in the multi-million dollar Congressional races (which Democrats obviously also need to win so we can take back the House).
Hi, Dr. Wulsin:
Thank you so much for standing up and running.
Are you confident that all the votes will be counted in your race and that everyone who is eligable and wants to vote will be able to?
Thanks.
I was born in Cincinnati and my wing-nut Dad in Indy still likes to listen to WLW/AM out of Cincy. Jean Schmidt is so out there that, the not so silent dog whistle racist bloviator, Bill Cunningham has advised his close friend Schmidt on air to tone it down a little bit on his talkshow.
There is literal campaign gold to be mined from Crazy Jean’s witness questioning while serving on Mark Souder(R-IN) Human Resources committee. Please look up Jean Schmidt’s CSPAN appearence on the Plan-B and HPV vaccine hearings.
Dr. Wulsin, thank you for coming to speak with us today. Howie (and Christy) — that was a great intro. Thanks again for all the work you do with Blue America.
Dr. Wulsin, I’ve had Medicare for a few years because of disability. Through Medicare I have HMO coverage which isn’t bad at all, and the premium is manageable. If we as a nation can spend billions — maybe trillions on war profiteers, why can’t we provide Medicare for everybody?
Dr. Wulsin, I think that Medicare Part D was actually written by the health care lobbyists, and then rubber stamped by the Republican congress. This is also what happened with bankrupcy bill.
Is there going to be a debate with Jean Schmidt? I’d love to see one…
Thank you, THANK YOU for getting involved!
Seems every election we hear about all the women, ususally single, that wold vote Democratic, but don’t show up at the polls. Any ideas on how to get these women out to vote?
Welcome to FDL, Dr. Wulsin.
Over the last couple of decades, the federal government has been gradually eliminating civil service positions, particularly in the Defense Dept., and replacing them with contract employees. This is supposed to promote efficiency. One of the consequences, however, has been that government employees seldom do the technical or skilled work of running a government, instead being consigned to administrative roles. Assuming you have formed an opinion on this issue, do you think this is more efficient, and should the trend continue?
Dr. Wulsin, ya got $25 from me. Thank you for seeking to make America’s future brighter. We need more candidates like you, and we need you to win.
I hope you won’t think my question frivolous, but I have a concern for you should you win. Is the outfit your Congresswoman wears mandatory? Don’t you fear having to don that uniform on the House floor? Or will Jean’s be retired, with her?
A healer who honed her skills in East Africa, Kenya and Rwanda. And if I may make so bold, a hot chick as well. You had me from hello. Mean Jean, not so much.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 17
Hi Vic,
Best of luck from Texas. I just hit the tip jar ; )
Ed*ard Teller,
You’re asking serious and important questions. Before I go into details, I want to point out that we need to make our health care decisions based on science and evidence, not on ideology, profits, or political expedience.
Let me answer your question: We can reduce the costs of health care by (1) Using electronic medical records. EMRs will improve the information that doctors and nurses have access to, which will reduce mistakes and improve the quality of care. This will lead to long-term cost reduction.
(2) We need to totally overhaul Medicare Part D.
(3) We need to allow for re-importation of prescription drugs from Canada, as Sherrod Brown has advocated. I’m excited to work with Sherrod on this when we’re both in our new jobs in DC.
(4) Most importantly, we need to use our health care dollars for clinicians, for treatment, and for prevention — not padding the profits of big companies.
I’ve spent my life in prevention, and I know that we can reduce costs and increase quality by focusing on keeping people healthy and getting them care before high-cost treatment is necessary.
Hi, Vic. Good speech this morning in Glen Este!
Hello Dr. Wilsun, and welcome!
I am impressed with Ned Lamont’s argument that lack of universal healthcare in the U.S. actually stymies entrepreneurship because the small businessperson is leary of leaving a job they already have that provides healthcare to start their own business, and they are also concerned with the cost of providing benefits to their employees if they do start their own business. Do you agree? (I apologize for not stating this as elegantly as Mr. Lamont has.)
What other issues, besides healthcare, are you addressing in Ohio as you campaign?
Dr. Wulsin…
I am the parent of a wonderful daughter. What advice would you think would be appropriate to give a son or daughter that comes to you and says: hey pops, hey moms, I’m thinking of joining the military.
Oklahoma Kiddo: Have them read the great book: 10 Excellent Reasons Not to Join the Military!
…and your little dog too,
Here’s the thing: As Sherrod Brown noted last week, all of us working for change in Ohio are focused on ensuring a clean and fair election. Check out Secretary of State candidate Jennifer Brunner’s plan for reform here: http://www.jenniferbrunner.com/platform.shtml . I will work with her to make sure these happen.
But we also have to be careful that these concerns don’t depress turnout. I don’t care how big our concerns are about Ohio’s voting system, this cannot lead to even a moment’s hesitation about whether to turn out and vote on election day. The only way to take back our democracy and clean up our voting system is to mobilize in such strong numbers that no dirty tricks can stop us on election day.
Checking out your blog Dr Wulsin and came across this…
Mean Jean: “Out to Lunch”
lol
TeddySanFran @ 24
Teddy, don’t forget to close your tags. [/snark]
iftthethunderdontgetya,
About the debates. I’ve challenged Jean Schmidt to 7 debates — one in each of our district’s counties. Lincoln and Douglas had 7 debates, and the people of the 2nd District deserve no less.
Does Jean Schmidt have the guts to debate me? Is she willing to defend her record and her infamous comments on the floor of the House?
You should ask her. Here’s her email address: schmidtcampaign@jeanschmidt.com
Also, take a look at what happened when I went Jean’s campaign office to challenge her to debate:
http://www.wulsinforcongress.com/blog.asp#blog84
Dr. Wulsin—thanks for stepping up to fight the good fight as well as stopping by to chat with us. Now I’m off to ActBlue.
Hi, Vic!
kay,
Thanks for being in Union Township this morning! We just got back. Wasn’t the rally energizing? Thanks for being part of the change!
Proud to help. Mean Jean is odious. Smug sense of entitlement. Good match for Lieberskunk.
Vic, we hope you wipe the flo’ with Mean Jean!
As an early retiree, I have an individual high-premium, high-deductible health-care policy that’s eating me alive. So naturally, my question is:
Do you believe single-payer is the way to go, and if so, how best do we get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?
Thanks and best of luck!
Welcome to the innernets! We are not all wild-eyed kids, blogging from our parents basement. I am a 46-year-old truck driver in Oklahoma that does not have the time to research candidates. I look for people like Howie and fdl to vet candidates for me to support. I have more money than time, and a nod from them is a donation from me. When you are victorious, be sure to spread the word that we are not crazies, just a committed and active community. I will help you. Return the favor from office and be an honest steward of the publics trust.
weeder,
Do you know that Ned and I lived in the same dorm in college? Go Lowell House!
Of course the high cost of health care is a burden on our economy. It’s dragging down small businesses and large ones alike. How can we compete globally when thousands of dollars of health care costs are slapped on every vehicle coming off the line at Ford, GM, and Chrysler?
Reducing the cost of health care is going to be a massive boon to our nation’s economy, as well as all Americans’ pocketbooks.
HA! Stopping by Mean Jean’s office was hilarious. Let’s put her “Out to Lunch” permanately. The times, they are definately a changin’!
Dr. Wulsin – wlecome, and good luck in this race. Your election will be a “two-fer” by replacing the vile Ms. Schmidt with your positive qualities. So I feel like the modest ActBlue contribution I just made is like a two-for-one deal!
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 32
I saw Jennifer Brunner on CSPAN this morning at the DNC meeting in Chicago.
She strikes me as a serious and impressive candidate.
But . . . I am worried about voter suppression and counting hijinks in this election. I want to see the votes for you counted fairly.
Any thoughts on that?
Dr. Wulsin thanks for your decision to run for congress.
Since you are in the healthcare field I would like to just say I would like to see any legislation to improve the delivery and availability of healthcare to all people should also include greater access and assistance with dental care. As you know, without a good foundation of dental care many health problems can become much worse. While very helpful to some, the dental assistance/insurance that most corporations offer (if at all) is inadequate and expensive for many families and individuals.
Best of luck.
Dr. Wulsin @ 35, that is an awesome picture! Of course, Mean Jean has been out to lunch longer than she’s been in Congress. (P.S. For those interested in these results, Mean Jean bested Katy Harris in the final round of Congressional Catfight)
But I think better than emailing Jean about a debate, would be emailing the newspapers in OH-2.
Oilfieldguy,
Thanks for the support! If we’re going to win this race and turn this country around, we’re going to need the support of the netroots — even if you’re not crazy and wild-eyed!
We have got to get the word out about this campaign. As I said before, it’s a low-dollar race and every bit you give goes a long way. We unseat Jean Schmidt and we’re one seat closer to a Congress that holds the Bush Administration accountable.
About the high cost of health care. Who is profitting the most from sick people? Wouldn’t that be the most attractive target to start with? Nothing wrong with profits–profiteering is a whole different thing.
Awesome. Thank you Dr. Wilsin, and Howie K yet again. Off to Act Blue yet again.
opps Wulsin
(must be that *ilson bug in my brain)
Mean Jean Schmidt is a cancer that needs to be excised from the body politic. Dr. Wulsin sounds eminently qualified to do the job.
Dr. Wulsin, I really like what you said about science above:
“I want to point out that we need to make our health care decisions based on science and evidence, not on ideology, profits, or political expedience.”
At Yearly Kos this summer, I attended a panel discussion chaired by Gen. Wesley Clark on the subject of science and politics. I heard a lot about how the Bush administration is making policy decisions that are contrary to scientific evidence and thought. This is a problem that extends well beyond the health care area. I look forward to seeing what you can do in this issue after you are elected.
iftthethunderdontgetya,
Right on. Make an appeal to bloggers across the country to pay attention. Once they do, the local press will to.
The press in OH-02 needs to start taking this race as seriously as the voters do. You realize the importance of this election, and so do all of the people I meet at parades and restaurants and while walking the district.
Tell the press that they should take it seriously too.
Oilfieldguy (#49)– that’s a great thought: profits, yes/profiteering NO!
Dr. Wulsin,
I work on an Arizona Indian Reservation. Reservation communities are in great need of more and better health services. Diabetes and obesity are huge problems. When you are elected I hope that you spend sometime looking into the needs of tribes nationwide. There are more than 500 tribes and 300 reservations.
Dr. Wulsin – first, I’m so glad you are running for office in Ohio and are focusing on the health care crisis in our country. During the Clinton administration, health care costs seemed to be coming under control (though after Hillary’s unsuccessful task force the health care mess wasn’t addressed to the extent it should have been).
However, since 2000, health care costs have increased precipitously each year. Every company I have worked for – large and small – has been negatively impacted as they struggle to provide employees with decent coverage.
Also – I’m glad you are also focused on cleaning up the election process in Ohio. My daughter was one of those students standing in line for hours at Kenyon College, waiting for her turn to vote. Blackwell should be in jail, not running for elected office.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have you in the House and Lamont in the Senate? I’ll be happy to support you with a financial donation to your campaign. And I certainly do hope “the times, they are a changing.”
weeder,
As for other issues that matter to me. Democrats need to start talking more about Iraq and real national security.
The Iraq war has been a distraction from the real threats to our national security. And it’s blatantly clear that the Bush Administration doesn’t have a plan for Iraq. We need a new course — not the same old course.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 27
Thank you — I’ll do my part to help this race along. It doesn’t look like you’ll need much more than money as long as you can get the word out!
OH-2 be blue again!
neurophius,
As for science and politics: Our homeland security policy should be based on evidence and accurate intelligence.
I do believe that terrorism is a serious threat to our nation. My young cousin, who’s volunteering on the campaign in other room right now, lives in NYC. I want her to be safe. And I want her to have confidence that our government is looking out for her and protecting her.
But our current Congress and the Administration are treating national security like a partisan game and an boondoggle opportunity for their corporate friends.
That gets in the way of them finding and using the facts and evidence that we need to keep our country safe.
Musicsleuth (#58), the GOP has already shown last year that they will spend any amount to hold on to their seats. They dumped millions into OH-02 and CA-50 to hold those seats. For Vic to get her message out, she absolutely needs more money and she can’t look to the DCCC or to Big Business, only to people who care about good governance and to people who care about her issues.
Many of us followed Paul Hacketts race so we got a feel for your district…
Can you tell us the three main issues you are hearing from voters in your district?
Dr. Wulsin, I am excited to have real doctors & hands on practitioner run for office. I left the nursing profession after 20 plus years in acute care and 11 yrs working insurance industry with total disgust. When you become a victim of your own profession….
Would you advocate for Medicare for All or another version of univeral healthcare?
musicsleuth,
That’s right. We already have the right message and the right vision.
If you can help us get the money and grassroots support we need to get that message out, this is one race that even marathon-runner Jean Schmidt won’t win!
Howie Klein @ 61
That was my point — I’m sending money, her message and positions don’t need any help — the word just needs to get out :-)
Howie,
If the RNCC or RNC has to put a single dollar in this race this year, they’re going down in an enormous land slide.
They’ve spent far more money on Jean Schmidt than they ever wanted to. I’m not too worried about them getting involved this year.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 60
Often times, politics is about priorities. What would your priorities be for national security? In other words, if you had to choose three (or more) things to change about how we’re protecting ourselves, what would they be?
Dr. Wulsin, we welcome you with open arms. I’m particularly heartened by your statement about needing long-term vision. We will have a mess on our hands for many years to come. In addition to healthcare and Iraq, which are enormous issues, do you have any other priorities you think we need to pursue? Apologies is this has already been addressed.
Whatever you do, please don’t let the DLC get involved in your campaign. When elected, tell Rahm Emanuel to take a hike. We need leaders like you, Lamont, Findgold, etc. to be the spokespeople for Democrats.
AZ Matt,
Indian reservations are places where preventive medicine and education are particularly important. Our conventional medical system has done too little to overcome the cultural barriers that limit access to quality health care for native Americans.
I need to learn more about the state of our Indian reservations, and am looking forward to doing so.
It takes incredible fortitude for someone to step forward and run for political office, especially for a Democrat to have to face the hatred spewed from the mighty right-wing wurlitzer. My hat is off to you lady, these guys are brutal. If you have any question on how to deal with the zealots from the right, I strongly recommend the multiple Late-Nite posts put up by our own TRex. He operates from the principle, never explain, never defend always attack. Worthwhile reading.
Dr. Wulsin, I realize you are more than a “healthcare” candidate, but oh well: I want to say again how much I feel “Medicare for all” is the answer.
For one thing, how else will people trust in the electronic maintenance of health care records? Forget the Republican meme of distrusting government. People do trust the government. Would we prefer that a private corporation maintain our IRS records? No. I see the benefits of the EMRs, but I see the potential for abuse, too.
But the main thing is, for the economy — healthcare needs to be divorced from employment. Do you agree with this?
PS, it’s a real pleasure to contribute to your campaign.
For my part, I’ll prod the SF Chronicle and other Bay Area regional media outlets. SFGate ran a “scary Speaker Nancy Pelosi campaign” article recently. I’m going to “spotlight” this FDL post, and ask my local media to cover Dr. Wulsin’s campaign. Our local media should show San Franciscans an Ohio candidate who’ll be in the Democratic house MAJORITY in 2007.
Gotta go make some money to pay off that credit card that I keep pulling out on Saturday mornings.
Howie, thanks for featuring another great candidate. Go Victoria!
Cujo359,
Great question. I’ve got six priorities. Here’s a link, courtesy of one of our local bloggers.
http://ohio2006elections.blogs…..html#links
What do you think about these priorities?
One thing you might want to bring up about healthcare costs are the exhorbitant stock options the HMO’s give their officers.
Case in point:
One person.
How many kids could be covered for 1.6 Billion dollars?
How many elderly?
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 60
A wee bit of exception. I don’t feel terrorism is an existential threat to our Republic. George Bush’s cult of authority is. Terrorist surely can kill and destroy buildings and people, however Bush is destroying the idea of what it means to be an American. I know that no candidate can say such things in todays climate, but just so you know, their are a lot of us that feel this way.
meta,
Our energy policy is a mess. It’s a danger to our environment and our national security. It’s a burden on our economy and it’s a tragedy for our children and their children.
But there are good solutions. Let’s start by promoting alternative and sustainable energy sources. It’s so obvious I feel like I’m saying something trite. But our government still doesn’t get it.
Take a look at my energy policy principles: http://www.wulsinforcongress.c…..asp?id=886
Tomorrow my husband & I are attending yet another spaghetti benefit fundraiser to help a middle class family with medical costs, this time a friend undergoing 2nd round of chemo. I don’t remember these benefits happening a couple of decades ago & now it’s a weekly occurrence in my small town.
We have a small business & had to change to a higher deductible health care plan for us & our employees when the yearly cost reached $70,000. The different plan requires us to fill out more paperwork so it feels as if we are not only paying for but also having to be managers of the health care for all of us.
Health care insurance costs in this country hurts not only americans but businesses. It’s quite ironic that legislation that initially benefits pharmaceutical & insurance companies, ultimately ends being very detrimental to them in the (not so) long run.
john in sacramento,
Good point. Thanks for the link.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 74
That’s a good list. It certainly hits most of my areas of concern. I’m always a little troubled by the “securing our borders” talk, but there’s probably more that can be done there. Do you agree with the requirements for a passport for Canadians and Americans crossing into the U.S.? It sometimes seems like we’re going a little ID-crazy here.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 35
Welcome Dr. Wulsin,
From your blog on this:
Dr. Wulsin first asked Schmidt to debate three weeks ago, proposing an event in each of the Ohio 2nd’s seven counties. Schmidt didn’t respond—and when a Cincinnati Enquirer reporter tracked down her chief of staff to ask why, he disdainfully dismissed not only Vic but the voters of Ohio: “Who’d show up anyway?”
Who would show up? Me, and I live in Michigan! I come from a military family and she disgracefully insulted America as a whole. Perhaps she needs a “Lincoln and Douglas Debate Float” to follow her around until it sinks in it’s her duty to your state to debate you, she owes your constituents nothing less than to honor basic political protocol. The question should be: “Who would not show up?”
Thank You for showing up today, you are an impressive candidate and I wish you much luck on winning, we need more strong women exactly like you in office.
I dug out my plastic again and gave a small sum to the good Doctor as well as to that oh-so-cute John Laesch running against Denny Hastert
Dr. Wulsin, wonderful to see you here! I’ll be voting for your future colleague Mary Jo Kilroy up in the 15th district, and I’m looking forward to a blue Buckeye sweep this November.
Yesterday I followed Paul Hackett’s call to arms at the Daily Kos and signed up at the We Unite Ohio site. How much influence do the Russell Johnson – Ken Blackwell – ORP types have in the 2nd district, and how relevant is that movement as an issue in your campaign? How do you approach voters who are attracted to right-wing religious mindset?
Vic, you may have answered this and I’ve missed it in my running back and forth between threads, but I see that LindaR and I have raised essentially the same issue:
Do you feel single-payer (or, as LindaR phrases it, healthcare divorced from employment) is the way to go? If so, how do we best get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?
Dr. Wilsun, thank you for your intelligent and civil approach to politics. Your web site is great. I’m grateful for your attention to the environment and energy, as well as education. I spent the better part of a long career in higher education, and I’m truly saddened by our current state of affairs. Thank goodness for private philanthropy or we would be in horrendous shape.
In addition to money, what do you feel your campaign needs on the ground at this point?
When you get to Congress, look up my representative, Jim Cooper. He’s a pretty bright guy.
Dr. Wulsin, regarding emailing newspapers to spotlight a debate (or hiding from same) in OH-2, are these the main two?
Letter to the Cincy Post
Letter to the Cincy Enquirer
P.S. Awesome cartoon!
Shez,
I love the Lincoln-Douglas float idea. I’ll get the volunteers right on it!
I agree (surprise surprise!) that we need more strong women in office. I’m so grateful to Howie for making me part of Blue America.
Wouldn’t “Victoria” be a nice woman’s name to put on the Netroots Endorsed list? I think Francine, Darcy and Linda need some company!
Dr. Wulsin,
Thank you for taking the time to come to the blog and talk to us. The main stream media tend to portray us as deranged Maoist guerillas hehe, so I imagine it must be somewhat of a surprise for political candidates to come here and see us talking about our favorite recipes and gardening :)
I also think there is a tremendous disconnect between the elected incumbents and their constitents generally…and if more politicians left the beaten track of the stage-managed events, and just talked to and listened to regular people like you’re doing here, the country would be so much better off.
I don’t live in Ohio, but I wish you all the best! The polling certainly looks promising.
Dr. Wulsin,
I’m so happy to see that you are passionate about health care.
On that message alone, you’ll win.
A recent experience (I’m a former ER tech) as a patient was kind of sad. A visitor told me she had not gone back to her doctor after her last TIA because several co-workers had gotten dropped from their insurance when they got sick. People are really upset about this.
I like your energy policy. Someday, you should check out my position on energy.
RBG @
73
LOL- you too, huh? It’s my penance for working on Saturdays….
(for Mary: tithing for the tie thing?)
masaccio,
I’ll be sure to get to know Jim Cooper when I get to DC. I like the way he stands up to Bush on stem cell research!
Greetings from South House (Radcliffe ‘66). I’m glad to see that you post an occasional diary over at Daily Kos. I’ve become persuaded that every campaign needs a “Kiss Float.” Is there one single image that captures Mean Jean? Yes, she got booed on the House floor, but that was because she has bad manners, not because of the substance of what she said. That will do if there’s nothing better, but is there anything else that might work? A nice picture of her out shooting tame birds with Cheney, maybe?
iftthethunderdontgetya,
Yeah, those are the biggest two papers. Also, the Portsmouth Daily News, the Clermont Sun, Pike County News Watchman.
Dr. Wulsin — I know that education tends to be a huge issue nationwide. My mother was an elementary school teacher for more than 30 years, and I have heard first-hand stories about issues with No Child Left Behind from her and her teacher friends. I recall a number of appalling quotes from Jean Schmidt regarding public education when she was running against Paul Hackett — in particular something about unhappy parents needing to just send their children to private school (as if that is a choice for everyone in America).
I’d like to know a little more about your views on education, if you’d care to talk a little about them.
Vic, may I direct your attention back ^ to the question at 83, please ma’am?
BarbaraB,
My son Stu just graduated from South House — now Cabot. It’s great to have a ‘Cliffie son…
Dr. Wulsin, a second question if I may. What do you think about Al Gore’s message in An Inconvenient Truth? Environmental issues have been typically misused by conservatives in Ohio as a divisive bludgeon — I vividly remember Bush I calling Gore “Ozone” while campaigning in Ohio, and claiming that his ideas from Earth in Balance would cost Ohio jobs. Do have ideas about how we can get away from our national dependence on fossil fuels? And about how to address environmental issues to voters in your district so that they don’t have to feel afraid for their future?
Best of luck on November 7th, I know you’re fighting in a traditionally dark red district, but I honestly believe that you can win, and that Democrats will be very successful in Ohio this year, both in the Statehouse and in the US Congress. Go Buckeyes!
my 68 year old Congresslady Julia Carson has had a couple of heart operations and she’s not in the very best of health — she makes this into a campaign asset – healthcare issues! It works . . . folk are upset about insurance costs!
lotus @ 12:23 pm (#95) – I’ll second (or is it third?) that request.
Lotus (#97), you think there are right-wing religionist loons in the district???
Ruh-oh, Howie, that one flapped right (you should par’n the expression) by me . . .
Howie Klein @ 12:27 pm (#99) – I think it’s lotus’ 12:13pm post. The comment numbers aren’t the same for everyone. As we used to say in blueprints, they’re for “reference only”.
Buckeye Hamburger,
I’m perfectly willing to approach right-leaning religious voters (and I do so regularly), because I think there’s a lot that unites us.
The current government is exploiting faith for partisan politics.
I’m a Christian. And my faith has driven my work and my relationships.
Part of my faith includes the belief in the basic goodness of individuals and fundamental hunger for community, which I feel is too lacking in our country today.
I worked to rebuild Rwanda’s health infrastructure after the genocide in 1994, and I’ve spoken out about the current atrocities in Sudan, whose government has persecuted African Christians, ethnically distinct Muslims, and anyone else who opposes them. I know I’m not the only Christian who thinks this issue goes deeper than partisan politics.
The same goes for health care and other concerns much closer to home. These are deep moral priorities for all believers, but leaders of the “religious right” have neglected them because they don’t advance their partisan political agenda the way that wedge issues will.
At the end of the day, I know my faith inspires my politics.
Kurt,
One of government’s priorities should be listening to people.
For me, it’s the best part of campaigning. My goal is to listen and to help unite my constituents.
We need a government that is responsive and responsible. Jean Schmidt is neither.
meta @ 84
Excellent question meta. Dr. Wulsin, as you can see you certainly have the vast progressive netroots behind you already from all 50 states, not just Ohio. Please feel free to tell us in what areas you need help, for your local progressives to volunteer in. (Us out of staters are good for donating office supplies, etc.)
Howie, have I mentioned lately again how this is my favorite part of the week to meet all these candidates? (hug & smooch) In keeping with the new trend for the last couple of weeks, does Dr. Wulsin have a family member nearby or online to say hello to us?
I see it’s over. Bummer
I’m reading a book entitled, ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ and wondered if our good doctor had read it or if it’s on her “list” – it’s written by Michael Pollan.
I lived for 7 years in Ohio attending college in Pepper Pike (Ursuline) while residing in Bedford working for UHHS. Corporate medicine.
Most of us– I think– know plenty of Christians who are Christians in the sense that they are inspired by Jesus Christ’s message of love and peace and brotherhood, rather than by Jerry Falwell’s or Pat Robertson’s or Fred Phelps’ messages of hatred and exclusion and materialistic greed. It isn’t really a question about “Christians” as much as it is about believers who are exploited by right-wing partisans masquerading as holy men and perverting Jesus’ message.
Dr. Wulsin, thanks so much for stepping up to run in OH-2. You are inspiring, and your experience is awesome (if you will forgive me for using that tired word). We so much need pols and female pols at that who understand medical and scientific issues. I am a university prof in Biology, and it is sometimes shocking to me to see how little my students understand about science, the scientific method, and statistics (interpretation thereof).
Christy Hardin Smith,
You’re right that Jean Schmidt has an atrocious record on education. And, as the kids would say, “That sucks.”
Stu, who I mentioned earlier, is down in Mississippi right now teaching public school in the Delta.
Teaching is one of the most honorable professions, and I’m so proud of Stu.
Teaching is extremely hard — and frankly, extremely underappreciated. We need to better support our teachers.
Jean Schmidt voted against Head Start — which is a phenomenally successful and powerful program. And she’s voted against student loans. It’s outrageous.
It’s bad for our kids and bad for our country’s future. We need new leadership on education policy.
Howie Klein @ 108
perfectly framed
Kitt,
I haven’t read Pollan’s book, but thanks for the recommendation.
I’m currently reading Bill Clinton’s autobiography (very slowly). Talk about an inspirational leader…
A small point of discussion:
Cultural barriers (12:01) are also “boundaries” within which the culture operates normally. Native cultures have sustained themselves a lot longer than purveyors of western medicine so it seems that the need is not so much to overcome the barriers as to work within them. Those barriers need to be maintained in a way that provides for the continuity of the culture, even in the midst of westernized lifestyles. Maybe I’m too accomodative. But…
Trust is lacking amongst differing cultural groups. Even education is so tightly bound by parochial points of view that plain old science can be controversial. (In Kansas anyway.) There isn’t a convenient way out. It just requires a form of outreach that doesn’t threaten one’s view of continuity — arguably a view held religiously by many.
Thank you for giving people a voice!
(From a Cincinnati kid no less.)
Howie or Vic (or anyone else from Ohio) — How badly was Mean Jean beaten up in her primary, and can any of her opponent’s ads be recycled or otherwise amplified? I don’t suppose he was running to her right, although anything is possible. And how close was that election? It seems to be the reason she has so little cash on hand now.
(Well, I’m nothing if not cussed, so one more try)
Do you feel single-payer (or, as LindaR phrases it, healthcare divorced from employment) is the way to go? If so, how do we best get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?
Howie Klein @ 12:37 pm (#106) – As a non-believer, my observation about religions is that what people get out of them depends on the motivations they bring to them in the first place.
Valley Girl,
I’m glad you’re a fellow scientist. To me, bio-statistics directs our priorities in a way that our current Administration isn’t willing to look at.
That means that people who could be helped through preventive medicine are being ignored while big corporations are pretending that their policies are helping.
So thanks for fighting for better-educated kids; keep up the good work.
Dr. Wulsin,
Thank you for being willing to run and serve! It gives me great hope for our country when ethical, capable, intelligent people like you and Ned Lamont are willing to run. And it’s really cool that Paul Hackett is part of your campaign, I’m glad he’s staying involved.
I just came back from ActBlue. I am so sorry that $25 is the best I can do right now but I’m very glad to contribute to turning 0H-2 blue.
You go, girl!
Dr. Wulsin, thanks for taking on this challenge. Your history and your courage are inspiring. I will donate to your campaign. I lived 3 years in Ohio (Cleveland) and I know there are good people there who will welcome the alternative you bring them.
neokneme,
Your comments remind me that one of the things I love about the Democratic Party is that we embrace diversity. The greatness of our nation comes from our diversity — from our different perspectives and backgrounds, our different religions and histories.
It’s one of the things that makes me proud to be a Democrat. And even prouder to be an American.
(Man, I sound really corny).
neokneme @ 113
Thank you for putting this so elegantly. Cultural sensivity will provide a much deeper connection and exchange.
Chez,
Hi, this is Wells here, Vic’s oldest son. I took a leave of absence from graduate school at Stanford (I work on the particle accelerator—really geeky stuff, I know) to come home to work on the campaign. Politics is much tougher than physics—we work incredibly long hours every day, but all the hard work is really paying off. As long as we can raise the profile of our campaign, I have no doubt that we’ll defeat Jean Schmidt this November. That’s where we need your help. Money goes a long way, but so does word of mouth, attention on-line, and, if you’re in Ohio, volunteering on our campaign, here: http://www.wulsinforcongress.com/volunteer.asp
One more thing: we’ve just launched the VicTree (get it?), a way of building our on-line grassroots support. Please take a moment to sign up and make a testimonial about why you’d like to see Vic win. The idea of the VicTree is to give a voice to our supporters democratically, and we think it’s a revolutionary approach to campaigning. You can sign up under me at:
http://www.wulsinforcongress.c…..;Zip=45242
Thanks to everyone who is supporting this important race! Cheers, Wells
Thanks to the good folks who make FDL happen, we all share your thrill!
Dr. Wulsin,
What are your views on the current funding levels at the National Institues of Health?
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 94
Portsmouth Daily News (You need to navigate to send a letter)
The Clermont Sun
The Pike County News Watchman
Let’s contact these papers, people! Why won’t Jean Schmidt debate Dr. Wulsin?
Dr. Wulsin- I think that the issue of preventive medicine is one that really needs to be addressed. And, it has been problematic in our health-care structure for a good long time. This is anecdotal only (friend of friend), but one M.D. apparently had to give up her practice (she specialized in treating diabetics) because she emphasized preventive medical approaches- apparently, helping people stay well does not pay as well as waiting for them to get to the point where they have to have expensive medical interventions and expensive drugs. So sad. BTW, I am not an M.D., so correct me if my take is incorrect on this.
Lizzy L,
Thanks girl! I grew up in Cleveland (graduated from Shaw public) and two of my favorite US Representatives are from Cleveland.
Stephanie Tubbs-Jones and Dennis Kucinich are real progressive inspirations for me.
Dr. Wulsin, thanks for standing up and running for Congress! I live in Arizona now, but was born and raised in central Ohio.
Are you getting much opposition from the right-wing churches? Because Ohio is full of them.
welsome to FDL, Wells. We’re pretty crazy about your mom.
Dr Wulsin, thanks so much for stopping by.
I read Clinton’s biography, it was indeed inspirational. I will agree with Bill, though — he needed a bit more editing.
Dr. Wulsin, I just wanted to chime in to thank you for spending this time with our community today.
Colleen- pardon me if I give my own opinion on that one- shameful. Same for NSF. Bushco. is anti-science. VG
Valley Girl,
That’s tragic for that doctor, for her patients, and what it indicates about our health care priorities. I think you’re exactly right — we need to spend much more energy and resources on prevention.
BarbaraB,
In fact, Jean Schmidt’s fear of open debate seems to go all the way back to her primary debates. When she wouldn’t take on a primary opponent, he had a rather creative response—he invited her imitator from the Saturday Night Live sketch to debate her instead!
I’d like to say that that invitation is still open. But we’re working on our own ideas as well. Keep watching our blog, http://www.wulsinforcongress.org/blog.asp for the latest–and when you see us do something exciting, let’s make sure it ends up all over the Internet.
Pachacutec,
Thanks for having me. This is great fun.
I’m grateful that the netroots are taking this race so seriously. Once again, the blogosphere is helping lead the charge to re-invigorate our democracy.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 133
LOL!!!!
Valley Girl @ 12:56 pm (#128) – I agree. Seems like this is one area where the Bush Admin’s spending priorities really match its rhetoric.
Valley Girl,
I absolutely agree. I work in a research lab. so I am aware of research that is needed no getting done.
Colleen
Dr. Wulsin,
I’m a radiology tech (plain to MRIs) so have a great biology background, plus degrees in theology/religious studies. Pollan’s book in some part addresses the concept of gov’t intervention in farming, feeding corn to cows (who are herbivores) in order to feed us, organic farming, etc.
Another issue: while living in Cleveland & Bedford, LTV ‘went out of business’ and how that affected people within my parish, some who were staunch Republicans. Dennis Kucinich helped stave off Cleveland Clinic and UHHS from getting St. Michael’s & grinding it under.
So, Doctor – I’m no longer in Ohio. I’m back home in Idaho, but I will definitely send you bits of cash each payday until you are elected.
Do read or look thru books like Michelle Goldberg’s Kingdom Coming and another entitled, Thy Kingdom Come: How the Religious right Distorts the Faith… (Randall Balmer) which addresses those people down your way who are Christians and were instrumental in helping Jean Schmidmt.
Dr. Wulsin- “and when you see us do something exciting, let’s make sure it ends up all over the Internet”– ahh- a really good way to help that happen is to email Howie, Christy and Jane- especially if you have video that can be/is posted on YouTube. http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/…..-uspo.html
Politicos beware: You live in YouTube’s world.
Although the title of the article emphasizes the negative (negative things caught on video)- it is also a great medium for getting the positive message, as I have seen before at FDL.
Dr. Wulsin, do you think enough peoples’ eyes have been opened in the district since the special election so that your outcome will be more favorable than Paul Hackett’s? I was very heartened by the 33% approval rating for Mean Jean (considerably below Bush’s). How do you turn that into people actually voting and voting for you?
Well, I’m a bit bumfuzzled by now. Two of us have asked the same polite, straight-forward question a total of four times (with an amen or two on it to boot), but it remains unanswered. What to make of this?
Dr. Vic Wells—I’m in central Idaho. Today is the 100 th
birthday of Philo Farnsworth– in 1920 when he was 14
in an Idaho potato field he “conceived” the idea
of electronic TV –each potato plant being an electron dot– seven years later at 21 years old in San Francisco
he transmitted and received a horizontal line. The rest has been history for America and Planet Earth. My question–is it true that there are 40,000 prescriptions
intercepted at the canadian border due to Plan D?
http://www.wulsinforcongress.com/blog.asp – there’s a mistake in the url (’org’ rather ‘com’)
This was the question from lotus:“Do you feel single-payer (or, as LindaR phrases it, healthcare divorced from employment) is the way to go? If so, how do we best get from here to there? If not, what would you propose?“
And, do people understand what is meant by single-payer?
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dr. Wulsin.
Ned Lamont in CT, you in Ohio. What a breath of fresh air! I almost dare hope that our great national nightmare will be over in November.
Snoboysdrift– Dr Vic Wulsin’s son is Wells and he stopped by to tell us about the Vic-Tree. I don’t think he’s a doctor and your question is probably meant for Dr. Wulson (Victoria). Meanwhile, she’s trying to get to everyone’s question and just agreed to stay a little longer than scheduled. While she’s answering you might want to check out that cool Vic-Tree. I can see how she and Ned Lamont must have learned some lessons together when they lived in the same college dorm!
By “single-payer” I mean “health insurance provided and administered by the U.S. government.” Your mileage may vary.
lotus,
I believe that both employers and employees are being hurt by our current health care system. It relies too heavily on employment as a route to care.
We need to dramatically change the system.
Government should take a stronger role to ease the burden of health care costs on employers.
A better health care system will both strengthen American businesses and make all Americans healthier.
All Americans should have health care. Period. Your job shouldn’t be the thing that gives you access to health care. Your humanity is what gives you that right.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 122
Welcome Wells! Thank you for stopping in to introduce yourself, and see how impressed we are with your mother, I’m in total agreement with Howie’s excitement to have such a wonderful person representing America and our progressive values. It has made it that much more personal to us to say hello to a family member and vice versa.
LOVE the VicTree page. We have an old Native American adage that says: “One leaf does not make a tree”. Dr. Wulsin reminds me of that wisdom and personifies it. VicTree in Nov indeed.
Hi you fine moderators out there, I have a comment @ 125, it just adds 3 more links to the 2 @ 87. Newspapers like it when people contact them, especially if it’s not a complaint about the newspaper.
Ask for a debate between Jean Schmidt and Dr. Wulsin!
Howie,
In order to win this race, I need more than Democrats’ votes.
That’s why I’m spending my energy talking — and listening — to the Independents (who make up over 50% of the district) and the Republicans. They are exceptionally unhappy with Jean Schmidt. They know that Jean doesn’t represent them, and they are looking for an alternative.
Yesterday, it happened again: At the New Richmond parade in Clermont County, I went up to mother with children and introduced myself. She was wearing a Jean Schmidt sticker. We talked for a moment, I asked for her support, and she took off her Schmidt sticker and replaced it with a Wulsin sticker.
It was the highlight of my day!
Thank you.
Now, specifically: do you believe the U.S. government should and — in our lifetimes — will become the provider of all Americans’ healthcare coverage (i.e., be the “single-payer”)?
Wow, talk about immediate gratification! That’s pretty wonderful and really speaks to your ability to connect. Best of luck to you, Dr. Vic.
And of course I’d still like to know what candidates would advise our sons and daughters if they are considering joining the military. Perhaps this is not an important question to be asking.

Ask them why Jean Schmidt won’t debate me in all 7 counties.
Is it because “cowards cut and run” ?
What are the reasons people give for being “exceptionally unhappy” with Ms Schmidt?
BarbaraB @ 113
From the Wikipedia article: Schmidt won the primary with 47% over 42% for Bob McEwen, who had finished second in the special primary in 2005 (before the special election against Paul Hackett). McEwen’s campaign criticized her for supporting an increase in the sales tax advocated by Governor Taft, and for employing a prominent Democratic attorney in a lawsuit against him.
During the primary it was revealed that she had made a number of false claims: she said she got endorsements from US Congressmen and the Family Research Council that they never made, and that she held a B.A. in secondary education that she didn’t have. The latter claim got her a reprimand by unanimous vote of the Ohio Elections Commission, issued five days before the primary.
I don’t know about how it affected her campaign funds, but I think that the primary further tarnished her already appalling image.
However, I’d like to join in with Howie and Christy by saying that Vic Wulsin has a helluva lot going for her besides just Not Being Mean Jean.
iftthethunderdontgetya- your comment now appears, thanks to someone else. Remember all that you need to refresh the entire page F5 not just refresh comments button to see comments that have been released from auto-mod.
What are the reasons people give for being “exceptionally unhappy” with Ms Schmidt?
Just a guess from afar, but could it be that one is: she’s approximately as stable as the Senate candidate we Floridians call “Alligator Bag”?
lotus –
I found one website awhile back that’s informative and even has video presentations regarding Single-payer health care if you’re interested.
Thanks, Kitt!
Oklahoma kiddo,
First, as a mother I’m always glad when my children ask me for advice. (It makes me feel like I still matter).
Second, I think you should ask them why they want to join. Every person’s reasons are unique and important, and it’s one of the biggest — and honorable — commitments a person can make.
Our Congress and President haven’t done nearly enough to support the troops in Iraq and the troops who have come home from Iraq. It’s disrespectful — and I’ll do it differently.
Most important, I think, is that you and your family talk seriously about enlisting.
Valley Girl @ 158
Thanks V.G., I had refreshed the entire page a few times before I decided to become a squeaky wheel. And the point is not whining, it’s that those five newspapers can be contacted and asked why Jean Shmidt won’t debate Dr. Wulsin…you know our side doesn’t have all the money, but there are many ways firepups can make their voices heard.
lotus @ 159
LOL….I know – but outside of the obvious with me ‘cuz I think she’s just too, too far over the top. I’d seen her on some local shows while she was campaigning as a guest and found her behavior bizarre.
Lotus:
Too funny… Their vibe is so similar, I agree. :)
BTW, I just released a comment from auto-mod from Dr. Wulsin, giving links to local papers. #156 So, please refresh the page to see that (F5). Dr. Wulsin- comments with more that a few links get caught in ”moderation”- it is an anti-spam thing, but also can put valid comments temporarily in ”moderation”.
lotus,
The question of single payer health is not simple.
Even within single-payer, there are many different models out there. I studied the British system in college, but there are many different alternatives, all with strengths and weaknesses.
I have to go back to what always grounds me when it comes to medicine and health care: Data and evidence. It will be a long fight to reform our health care system, but the first step is to get people in Congress who are serious and smart about how to do it.
Agreed, BH. I was just curious about why MJ had such high negatives. I mean, when your approval rating is lower than Bush, there has to be a reason. I don’t know how many Republicans Vic can persuade to vote for her, but if they stay home because they won’t vote for MJ (or Blackwell) that’s almost as good. It sounds like she has a very good shot at the independents and maybe even those “security moms” we keep hearing about.
True, that, DrVW at 164. Blighty’s NHS is a daily horror-show in the London papers.
I notice that your website lists this promise:
YAY-EZZ!!! Pleaseohpleaseohplease, do that!
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 119
To this I would say, to very many Democratic candidates around the country, don’t be ashamed to sound “corny”. Or to put it another way, don’t hold back on expressing passion about the values that are important to you. Voters connect to that and they are hungry to hear about it, and too often it’s only the Republicans that they hear it from.
From what I’ve learned about you, Dr. W., I’m certain that you realize that, but I don’t think it can be emphasized too much. Republicans are unabashed about appealing to the emotional level, even if the show in many cases is just a sham and a spectacle — case in point Jean Schmidt. But Democrats have to fight against the meme of “not standing for anything”. There’s no reason why we can’t express our causes as moral and noble callings, and no reason to be ashamed of doing so. I think we’ll get a lot more wins if we do.
BarbaraB,
You ask why Jean Schmidt is unpopular. Where should I begin?
I think the main issue is that Jean Schmidt doesn’t stand up for her constituents. She votes the way George W. Bush and Tom DeLay tell her to…not the way her constituents want her to. People here know that.
They want real leadership. They need a representative who will fight for them.
At the parade in New Richmond yesterday, voters were telling me that they felt like Jean just doesn’t care about them. (And New Richmond is in Clermont County — which is supposed to be Schmidt’s base). Not for long…
She seems like a great candidate.
I think someone with public health credentials could change a lot of things in Washington.
At the AIDS2006 conference, I met two AIDS educators from Cincinnati who told me that needle exchange was impossible and illegal in Cincinnati and in Ohio generally. Sure hope Dr. Wulsin fought that battle. It would show she was truly for the vulnerable!
BarbaraB, Mean Jean has never been well-liked locally. People in the area seem to think she’s a phony and a snob and very self-entitled. I mean not every Republican gets a nickname like “Mean Jean.” And everyone knows that one and many people use it as a matter of course. Her credibility really plummeted with the Murtha incident and the moronic follow-up (during which she got in a public fight with a local Republican legislator who, in effect, called her a liar) and she became a major embarrassment to the GOP and to the district. On top of that, her voting record is far from garden variety rubber stamp right wing nut. She’s much worse than that! Her voting score is always near the bottom of the barrel where one crosses the line from “conservative” to fascist. People in the district have become more aware that her out-of-state corporate campaign contributors’ issues are always supported to the detriment of just plain folks’ needs.
Dr. Vic Wulsin @ 171
The only people who are better off after five and one half years of Republican dictatorship are the richest few percent of America. Ohio, Pennsylvania, everyone else not in the tycoon class is being thrown to the pirahana. And that sad fact is finally sinking in.
Ok folks. This has been fantastic. I need to go raise some more cash so that we can spread our message of hope and our vision for a better America.
It’s going to take a lot of work. We’ve got 80 tough days ahead of us. But it’ll be great fun, and on November 7th we’ll celebrate together.
If you haven’t yet gone to ActBlue, I’d love it if you open a new window and head over there now: http://www.actblue.com/page/blueamerica#9507
And don’t forget to sign up for the VicTree!

There’s a lot you can do, so stay in touch.
Part of the reason I’m running is to be a part of the same revival of progressive and interactive democracy that you all live every day. So thank you for your time and your energy and your support.
Vic
Vic, thanks so much for a great session and for staying an extra hour and answering so many questions. You put more into this than anyone else has ever done. We’ll be following your campaign right through ’til November and many of us will see you in DC in january for the swearing in. All the best of luck!!
The Dean,
It’s getting late — I’ve been here for three hours — but I saw your message just as I was signing off. You can contact the Heimlich Institute for a copy of the report (I wrote it for them).
I look forward to engaging with you on the issues that matter to our district.
Gang, I want to remind you that next Saturday we have Jerry McNerney as a guest. And on Wednesday we have a special session with Ben Rahn, the founder of Act Blue. I’m really looking forward to that.
The Dean @ 179
I wasted my time following your links, so called “Dean”. All I can ascertain from same is that you are a looney right wingnut. Thanks for playing, though.
(waves, bounces VOTE FOR DR. VIC sign)

Howie, I am really looking forward to this. Even though I’m not in his district, I’ve already donated to McNerney. The guy is just flat-out fantastic and he’s running against a real SOB. Can’t wait!
The Dean @ 176 and 178, since you’re talking about Dr. Wulsin “flip-flopping” and having “something to hide”, could you fill in the rest of us who don’t have a clue about a Dr. Heimlich and a “weird idea called ‘malariotherapy’”. (I’ll resist the urge to make a joke about the Heimlich maneuver.) Seems odd to me that she should provide some sort of proof that she doesn’t support something.
iftthethunderdontgetya (#183), you took the words right out of my mouth.
Whaddya bet, BH, that “The Dean” has now submerged into the fetid fen from which s/he briefly crawled . . .
Blub.
Howie Klein @ 184
Well, that’s high praise from you, Howie, thank you! Hope to see you on Wednesday.
Howie,
Just curious, but how did the fundraising turn out for the Good Dr. here?
I found here VERY impressive, articulate, and refreshing. Thanks for having her on!
Thanks, Howie, for once again bringing us such a wonderful candidate. And thanks to you and to Vic for answering my question on MJ’s negatives. After all, we know why we don’t like her, but we’re Democrats. (Well, mostly. I know some of us are Greens or independents. But you get my drift.) It’s odd that MJ has developed such a sense of entitlement and is so out of touch with her constituents so quickly. It took HoJo several years to get there. *g*
The last time I looked we were approaching $1,400. I expect that we’ll have raised $2,000 by Monday morning.
Dr. Wulsin, I enjoyed this dialogue immensely and wish you all the best on November 7th. I have a vision of you being sworn in next January, as well as Mary Jo Kilroy, Sherrod Brown, Ted Strickland, John Cranley, Zack Space, and Jennifer Brunner — and Ohio State winning the national championship. Of course, everyone has a lot of work to do to make those dreams come true (even the Buckeyes), but it feels so good just imagining it. It’s worth fighting for, isn’t it?
Good luck, Doc! See you in DeeCee for your swearing-in!
Thanks again, Howie, for a swell Saturday afternoon. Always a pleasure, great commentary, terrific guesting, and a charming host. A highlight of my every week!

Great! Thanks.

Dr. Heimlich and malariotherapy has to do with AIDS and treatment of patients with such.
I’m always leery of those who want you to provide ‘proof’ of why you don’t support something. It’s idiotic.
Well, my wallet’s a little lighter, but thanks.
Kitt @ 2:13 pm (#190) – I’m always leery of those who want you to provide ‘proof’ of why you don’t support something. It’s idiotic.
It’s also a great way to do stealth character assassination, as in “prove to us you don’t beat your wife”. This, BTW, is why we went with that “innocent until proven guilty” meme a few centuries ago.
It has been my experience that the right-wing nutjobs in OH are some of the very worst. “The Dean” seems to be a member in good standing of that hate-filled, ignorant group.
Howie Klein @ 189
That’s great! That’s already more than 5% of her pre-existing cash on hand. I’ve already donated, and I’d like to see it go to 10% if we can do it. Either way, it’s good to make a difference.
Posted it on the next thread, maybe better here.
Some data on the Ohio election.
My Republican mother has decided to vote for the Democrat for governor against Blackwell [whew!].
She didn’t think there were any issues with Secretary of State…ok more work to do there.
And on the local level, she said with exasperation “I’ll vote for any Democrat that can brush his own teeth.”
:) Yay for my Republican mommy! The heartland is moving.
Howie Klein @ 2:09 pm (#186) The last time I looked we were approaching $1,400. I expect that we’ll have raised $2,000 by Monday morning.
It’s now up to $1,600. Just need a few more donations…
Damn, I’d almost be sorry to see Mean Jean go. Her performance at the Murtha debate is a C-Span classic. I guess I could accept someone sane….but it won’t be nearly as fun.

Precisely. I don’t know what ‘the dean’ was wanting her to prove; I can’t find their remarks. I only know about Heimlich’s other work and projects because we in medicine use a method he ‘invented’ in relation to the swallowing mechanism for stroke and other patients with dysphagia.
as a privately owned blog, disruptive trolls are not welcome here — their comments may be deleted. They are welcome to stand on public streetcorners hollering about the evils of fluoridation or Masons or whatever, but not here …
It’s time for Mean Jean to start thinking about early retirement.
For the sake of my cousins, who live in Milford, I sure hope Dr. Wulsin wins!
Isn’t Vic just wonderful….I have to confess that I worked on her first primary campaign against Hackett.
So glad that she won her second primary….can’t wait to see her in DC…Ohio will have someone to be proud of besides Tubb-Jones and Kucinich….and of course Brown who will move over to the Senate.
Listening to her today makes me want to move back to SW Ohio and help her out again. Her family is really cool, too.
I gave, but left the 1 cent off, as I’m a Rock-A-Billy type (but followed the FDL link). Couldn’t give more than $25.00 to this wonderful woman at this time. I also figured the cd would be more appreciated by someone else.
Wow, I didn’t look at all the comments before I posted my puny $25.00. My better half keeps pleading with me to limit my donations to overtime, so this one will be a fight with her…unless I can convince my boss to give me more O/T, before the next statement arrives!
God, I’d love to work a whole series of Double Shifts between now and the next 80 days!
My boss knows what I do with the overtime money and is trying to get me all that he can.
In any envent–cool that soooo many folks here will donate when the call comes.
For non-Ohioans, and non-SW Ohioans as well, check out Cincinnati’s weekly “City Beat.” Great cover story (and cover illustration) on Kenny Boy Blackwell in current issue. They’re going to cover politics big-timw through Nov.

Great chat today, Dr. Vic! Doesn’t “The Honorable Dr. Victoria Wulsin of the Second Congressional District of Ohio” sound terrific?
More than 200 comments and replies here, but nary a word about the Iraq War. How could this be? What IS Dr. Wuslin’s view on our launching the Iraq War and her thoughts on getting out?
