When we last left the adventures of John "Little Jimmy" Olsen, Cub Labor Leader (head of CT-AFL/CIO), he was trying to convince his membership that Lieberman had a great record on health care and was, you know, a labor-oriented kind of guy and not an enabler of the most hostile President in modern history to workers' rights. Fortunately Bush's destruction of all occupational safety standards has not yet led to the kind of brain damage that would render this absurd assertion reasonable, and the rank-and-file strongly resisted Olsen's attempts to endorse Lieberman past August 8.
Since the primary Lamont has picked up the UAW endorsement and it looks like many other labor endorsements are on the way, but Olsen has steadfastly resisted committing himself on the matter. Now that Joe has decided he needs to shed any vestige of the liberal skin he claimed to have worn during the primary, isn't it time for Olsen to just admit he was wrong, his members were right, and do the right thing?
This weekend there is a DNC meeting in Chicago and Olsen will be in attendance. Says CJ in the comments:
[A]ll of the state representatives (to the DNC) are meeting in Chicago ... and they are taking a Lieberman vote. If it’s either overwhelming or unanimous that could be pretty hard hitting. I’m embarrassed to say that I know of this because our state committeeman spoke of it at a county Dem meeting last evening and was wondering if we (other states) should get involved - he was brought to his knees fairly rapidly and will now be voting against Lieberman at the meeting. We convinced him that it was a party issue not merely a state election issue.
You know, that's a great idea. DNC head Howard Dean has already distinguished himself by saying enough with Holy Joe's party bashing, and hopefully others will back him up. If you'd like to contact your local DNC representative and let them know your feelings on the subject, you might also mention that if they run into Jimmy Olsen they should nudge him into doing the right thing, eh?

Every Dem with half a testicle (or ovary, as the case may be) should be repeating that Joe is the republican candidate for CT-Sen, endorsing Ned, and reminding voters just who has been coming out in favor of and funding Joe lately (read: Deadeye Dick and pals).
I’d contact my DNC delegate, but I can’t figure out who from the California party is a delegate - their site is useless for that. (They don’t seem to know about the DNC, or at least don’t mention it.)
I have not seen anyone bring this up regarding this aspect of the CT-Sen race, but didnt the AFL-CIO split up? Where are the Change To Win coalition endorsements? The AFL-CIO is not nearly as powerful these days, why are we concerned about Little Jimmy Olsen anyway, isn’t his time in power up?

Question- and I had same when I read the original comment- what does “taking a Lieberman vote” mean?
WaPo
This shouldn’t even be a debatable point. The moment Lieberman is certified to be on the ballot as a CFL candidate he is no longer part of the Democratic Party. Since the DNC gathering is for the party, I fail to see how they’d do anything other than back Lamont.

I imagine that’s what they thought in Germany and the Soviet Union too. Things did indeed work out, unless you were one of the 30,000,000 people killed, or the unknown number of people who lived in prison or abject poverty because of government actions.
It CAN happen here.

I couldn’t figure CA out either. Help!
DNC Delegates are selected by the State Party so call up the State Democratic Party Headquarters. Your local Democratic Party could help too…
Obviously, our work here is not done.
Pundidiots called Lamont’s challenge a “purge,” it wasn’t. It was a primary. Now that Ned has won the primary and is the Dem candidate, and joe refuses to respect the will of the voters and insists on running as a Republican supported independent, perhaps a real purge is now in order.
Shoulders back to the wheel, Firedoggies. Call, write and pester every elected Dem you know and the DSCC and its leaders (Mark Pryor are you listening?) to support Democratic candidates. I know I have.
Hey Joe,
Kim Jong Il doesn’t like being overshadowed by Iraq, Iran or Hezbollah.
Joe. Why is Kim Jong Il preparing to test a nuclear weapon? I thought that the mighty Bush Doctrine was going to scare all of the worlds tyrants into submission? The Bush/Lieberman Doctrine is ruining America and our standing in the world is in a shambles because of loud mouthed, arrogant war mongering rhetoric.
Joe, you are an egostistical fraud and the voters of Connecticut decided to “throw the bum out”. Suck it up Emporer Palpatine.

Isn’t the plan for Lieberman to go on the ballot as a ‘petitioning Democrat’, i.e. still a ‘Democrat’, just not the Democrat?
…The ultimate aim being as Pierre Trudeau once said regarding the desires of French-Canadian separatists elected to provincial government…‘Divorce, with bed privileges’, and thus once again having it both ways?

Early this morning, on the BBC World News, they did a piece on the Vt woman on the plane, etc. Their POV was the media feeding frenzy during the event when there was essentially no information released, and how the talking heads were perseverating about the possibilities and fomenting public anxiety and fear by imagining the worst. They played various quotes from said talking heads and one of them was,”It could be a Ned Lamont supporter trying to make a point.” My jaw dropped and I was lying down at the time! I think Ned, in addition to becoming a wonderful senator from CT, is going to become a code word for the Faux News set for the great unwashed liberal loonies who dare to think of a world where the military is not the only answer to international unrest.

second that. Can’t find my DNC members on the DNC site and can’t find them on the California party site. Does anybody know how best to find out who our California DNC members are?
Well my sense on the CT ground is that lots of Lieberman voters are ripe for being flipped. And the biggest reason I’m hearing isn’t the war (though that’s big too); the biggest gripe is that the locals haven’t seen Joe Lieberman around these parts in more than a decade. People feel abandoned. I’ve talked to many community activists, nice people serving on town councils and old money types in Greenwich, who have invited Lieberman to make a local appearance, year after year, without getting a response. People round here compare Lieberman’s aloofness to previous senators who would personally get involved in helping out the locals using the power of their office. Even Joe’s loyal supporters are rubbed the wrong way by his disinterest.
Nevertheless, lots of “land of steady habits” types remain a tad bit nervous about putting their faith in this new kid, Lamont. So they need to get to know and like Ned over the next few weeks. Then they’ll be ready to make the switch. And when that avalanche gets going, Joe will get buried. That’s when he’ll drop out.
Well, it’s a theory anyway…
Peace.

O/T Maybe others saw this already, but I just ran across it:
Clinton to headline Webb fundraiser.
If a politician, and I am speaking of Joe Lieberman, has close ties to the DLC, as does Lieberman, then he is almost by definition not a friend of the unions. What’s the matter with union leaders who support Senator Lieberman? They are undermining their membership. And they are being quite remiss in their “leadership”. The only conclusion I can come to concerning union leaders supporting Lieberman is it must have something to do with payoffs and promises of future favors.
Proper Superman sentence contruction would actually be: “When last we left…”
Gives it that poetic consonance.
Joe Lieberman, do you support G. Gordon Liddy when he advocates to his radio listeners that if raided by Federal Agents they should “aim for their heads” with “Headshots” in order to take out those Federal Agents?
Non-fascist minds want to know.
Also, Dildo Joe, why is Kim Jong Il preparing to test a nuclear weapon? Is it because George W. Bush told him not to fire missiles a few weeks ago and he fired off 7 missiles on the 4th of July and Bush never came through with his threats?

kai- I’ve told this story before, but this is for you- when I was talking to people at polling places (after they voted) I got the same responses- not the war, but the fact that Lieberman hadn’t been locally engaged. One woman said that she contacted reps for help in sorting out medical bills for a son in hospice care. DiLauro sent back a concerned letter; Dodd’s office contacted her by phone and got the whole mess sorted out; Lieberman sent a letter with a list of lawyers she might contact!!!

My love note to the DNC — though I write nothing against Joe — it is everything against Joe — but I did not want to appear to partisan, like Joe.
Listen — if you are going to lend your support to Joe Lieberman after he lost the primary, then I will not be supporting your efforts as a group anymore. Nothing against Joe — but the Connecticut voters made the decision. If we allow this to happen in the Democratic Party, then we are just reliving the 2000 election by discounting the voters true intentions — but this time it is not the US Supreme Court sticking it to the voters by deciding the outcome, but an enemy within. This is not the way to get out the vote to unseat the Republican Party, but this is one sure way to create more apathy among the very voters that you may need to count on come November. It is disgusting to me that you even have to have a “Lieberman” vote.

DEPU’s said: “It CAN happen here”.
First of all, you twisted my quote out the context in which it was written. Which is OK, I guess, but hardly sporting.
Secondly, I believe the subversion of much of our Republic’s workhorse ideals have already been gutted, i.e., it already HAS happened here. The American people, so to speak, are staring into an abyss that has yet begun to stare back intensely enough to shock them into that realization.
In the larger context of my original post (on another thread), I’d add only that while the GOP is primarily responsible for that happening, their worthless democratic allies have aided and abetted their corruption every step of the way. Progressives able and willing to fight that subversion can no longer afford an alliance with those who reflexively veer rightwards, while at the same time calling themselves democrats.
I realize 3 months before a midterm election is not the most auspicious time to argue that out. Still, by my lights, it’s evident the democratic party is in need of a profound realignment in order to fight the good fight.

I apologize if this has been stated ad nauseum (haven’t been around much) - but here’s my observation:
Have you guys noticed how many of Holy Joe’s 2004 opponents have come out and made public statements against Joe and/or FOR Ned Lamont? John Kerry, Howard Dean, John Edwards, Al Sharpton, Wes Clark - who else?
My theory is that these are the guys who know, firsthand, what a miserable, smarmy SOB Lieberman really is. They’ve all been on the receiving end of his dirty campaigning - smiling and acting like the “nice guy” while he lies and smears.
I think these guys DON’T LIKE HOLY JOE ONE BIT!

There is only one group John Olsen is responsible to in his capacity as Connecticut AFL-CIO President, and that is the organized workers of Connecticut and their unions, and believe me, they have the means to bring him to heal, including throwing his ass out of office.
I believe they’re going to as well. Even before the primary, Ned had the AFT, IAM, and SEIU (including 1199) — all prominent, vocal unions in the state. And now the UAW? Forget about it.
A primary function of someone like Olsen at state HQ is to run the political operation. Let him obstruct, see what happens. Unionists for Lamont will build a parallel structure to do what the state-wide AFL-CIO usually does, run the coordinated state-wide political effort. That will build a battle-tested network of pro-Lamont and anti-Olsen labor activists throughout the state, something no figurehead bureaucrat like him would welcome.

Be careful with the 2004-2008 DNC list at #39. Some of the names are out of date. Depending on the rules of your state party, elections to the DNC frequently are held in off years, such as this year. Some members get re-elected, others retire or are not re-elected. In the case of Minnesota, the party chair and co-chair listed have been out of office for over a year. Someone at DNC needs the assignment to regularly update that list.

Hatch was quoted in Tuesday’s Tooele Transcript Bulletin as saying Middle East terrorists are “waiting for the Democrats here to take control, let things cool off and then strike again.”
Democrats are criticizing Hatch for what they see as “ridiculous” partisan hyperbole.
”There they go again trying to use smear and fear to win in November,” said Stacie Paxton, spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee.”

Smear and fear. Gotta love it…
OK - here is my letter to my DNC rep - (hope it really is Mr. Torres!)
Dear Mr. Torres,
I have read that the DNC will be meeting in Chicago this weekend to vote on the Lieberman issue. I am writing as a California voter and registered Democrat to urge you to (1) vote against any Democratic support of Senator Joseph Lieberman and (2) to support any motion that will eliminate Senator Lieberman’s future seniority or involvement in any Democratic Party agendas. Senator Lieberman lost the democratic primary in Connecticut. He has formed his own party, earned the fervent support of the Bush administration and many right-wing pundits, and is continuing to endanger the congressional races of three strong Democratic candidates.
In the absence of a strong, endorsed Republican candidate, Senator Lieberman is running as the de facto Republican candidate for Senator of Connecticut. However, many Democrats in leadership roles have continued to support Sen. Lieberman or have failed to make a strong show of support for the true Democratic Senatorial candidate, Ned Lamont. Members of the DSCC, in particular, appear to be putting either their incumbancy or their personal feelings ahead what is best for the Democratic Party. Incumbency and seniority are of no use to the people they “represent” if the incumbent will not truly serve the people - Senator Lieberman’s voting record is quite spotty on issues that matter, despite his vaunted 90%, and he is far too close to this administration for my comfort.
Why put up with Sen. Lieberman’s ego and sabotage, when Ned Lamont is a responsive candidate who has connected with the people, has EARNED broad-based support, and who just gets better the more people know him?
I want to be confident that the Democratic Party Leadership will support great Democratic candidates, and won’t support a mere incumbency racket that does not respond to the will of the voters. Someone has to hold this administration accountable for its actions, and that will not happen if the Democratic Party does not stand up for its voters and its candidates. I have been donating to a number of campaigns this year, but only to individual candidates I know will stand up for me and for our country - the Democratic Party has not, so far, convinced me that my money would be well spent. Please change my mind!
Please, Mr. Torres, do everything you can as the California representative to the Democratic National Committee to show the nation that the Democratic Party is strong in its support of real Democratic candidates across the US.
Thank you,
Snakes on a Mother F**king (Astral) Plame!

Is anybody from FDL going to be covering the DNC meeting in Chicago?
From the prior thread. I have read Judge Diggs’ opinion. There are some parts that could have used some work, but it is easy to follow, and very decisive.
First, there is some lovely backhanded snark in the references to Clinton v. Jones. The first one quotes this language: “[w]hen the President takes official action, the Court has the authority to determine whether he has acted within the law.” An odd quote from that decision, which bore no direct relation to official actions, and I’m guessing that the Judge is using it as a weapon for the appeal.
The second one relates to the problem that arises where two branches have overlapping powers. In Clinton v. Jones, the question was whether the President could be sued when in office over matters that arose prior to his election. Clinton argued that it was a distraction from the duties of his office. Justice Rhenquist says that is not a defense. Judge Diggs says: “Mere burdensomeness or inconvenience did not rise to the level of superceding the doctrine of separation of powers.” The clear implication is that compliance with the law is required of everyone, even if it is hard on their little baby selves.
Second, Judge Diggs pays careful attention to the issue of what the President and his
cronieslawyers have actually stated about the NSA program. These amount to findings of fact for purposes of the motion for summary judgment, and the government attorneys did not attempt to refute them. On a motion for summary judgment, the responding party cannot rely on pleadings, but is required to put forward contrary facts. For this reason, the Sixth Circuit will have trouble rejecting the facts on appeal.Valley Girl @ 73

If you were a high-ranking political official whose family included war profiteers in the past, you might consider looking for or even creating war profit opportunities for the future.
Desperate nations at war with each other don’t stop to check the price tags on things they critically need.
Who made money off of the Germans in WWII? Extrapolate. Discuss. And you know what? It includes people in both parties. This is a very dark discussion indeed.

SHEEEIT That says it good! Mwahahahaha
Great, as always, to hear from you Mrs. K8.
“blacks aren’t the greatest swimmers and many of them can’t swim…”
The above statement is nonsense, of course.
But it WOULD be accurate to say:
“Republican candidates aren’t the greatest swimmers and many of them can’t swim…”
And watching Republicans sink makes for real entertainment.

Hi Mrs. K8, great to hear from you. We are on the march, but there is a division of Vichy’s that are still stuck behind the Maginot Line and are firing back at us.

Politicos beware: You live in YouTube’s world.
~~Sen. George Allen (R) of Virginia also surely never imagined that the young man assigned to track his campaign appearances would cause him days of grief, simply by recording a comment that critics have called “racist” or, at best, “insensitive.”~~
~~George Allen isn’t even the only senator caught on video making an odd comment to an Indian American. Sen. Joe Biden (D) of Delaware appears on YouTube chatting with a young Indian American man about the explosive growth of the Indian population in his state, and elaborates with this: “You cannot go to a 7-11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent…. I’m not joking.”~~

Hey, no need for the potty mouth, Mister! :)
Benedict Arnold is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful person I ever heard about in my life!

Speaking of sun, I gotta get out to the pool now whilst the sun’s still shining to work out. And then it’s off to (where else?) physical therapy.
Sigh. These are the parameters of my world right now — Oh, and doing research into local dog rescue groups! Mr. K8 and I are going to be adopting a little sister for Tandy, and we want good research to go into picking the best doggie for our situation. We finally decided NOT to go with a very young puppy, because of my physical limitations and Mr. K8’s demanding job. Much as we love puppies, we would want/need to give a puppy the kind of attention and training necessary for it to be a well-adjusted and happy member of the pack — and to do that responsibly is a lot of work. So we’ll be looking into maybe a two- or three-year old to adopt from a foster home. So as frustrating as my own slow progress is, there are still joys to come!
I miss you and all Firepups fiercely. Will be back again a.s.a.p.

You describe it well, GSD!
Though I don’t speak French, I think the relevant part of the anthem goes:
Aux armes, citoyens! Formez vos bataillons!
[If I just slaughtered it, apologies — and please provide correction!]
I could use some Benedictine right about now.
