From Jane: The poodles and I are sitting in Christy’s West Virginia dining room eating a fabulous dinner of lemon garlic chicken, caprese salad, green beans and French bread. Okay I got the dinner and the dogs got to play with Fiona, who has managed to completely wear them out. She is absolutely fearless and has run them into exhaustion with the aid of a flashing red football. Christy looks great and her house is beautiful. Her gorgeous mom is also here. TRex called and wanted us both to know Malkin had linked to him and make sure he wasn’t burning the place to the ground with his Late Nite post. Then we ate fruit salad.
From Christy: Jane and the poodles arrived safely thanks to my awesome driving directions. (SO not true — I had to talk Jane through from the interstate because I suck at giving directions.) Fiona is having more fun with the doggies than she’s had in weeks, and the pooches will likely take a three-day nap after all this fetch. Wish you guys were here — we’ve got plenty of chicken leftover and some oven roasted garlic to go with the french bread.
From Fiona: Oooooh…fun doggies! Yay!

About Firedoglake
Jane and Christy, what an abundance of FDL goodness!
PEANUT, POODLES, AND FDL GODDESSES!
what exactly does the grand-daughter of a Methodist minister have in her window in the background?
Ahhh, simple fun. Life is good.
That’s an adorable picture.
What a wonderful pic!!!
And, speaking of food, did you see Imm suggestion on prior thread that pomme d’amour be a Sat. recipe special?
No pic for me. Wha’ hoppen?
Fiona and Kobe—-truly a spiritual moment.
The creatures we love.
And FITZ—–hurry….
I made a brief stopover myself in West Va. (Berkeley Springs) Sunday. Those gnats munched me but good, I’m still itching.
Watch out for them, Jane!
hugs for Fiona & all FDL doggies within reach.
Anne just got EPU’d, but it’s another great Anne comment, thus:
What would be nice is to make the DLC obsolete – or make it officially obsolete. I can’t see where they are anything but an albatross around the necks of the party.
It’s time to stop being afraid to be liberals and progressives. It’s time to stop allowing others to define what that means. It’s time to stop letting others tell us why we do what we do.
It’s time to make it clear that having a different philosphy doesn’t make us wrong. Jack Murtha on Hardball tonight pretty much said that just because the president says it, doesn’t make him right – and since pretty much all the decisions Buah has made have turned out to be wrong, Murtha’s not going to stop pushing for a change in direction.
I heard on CBS news tonight (which gave the NSA ruling about 15 seconds, if that – behind the JonBenet Ramsey news and behind the tobacco lawsuit news) that the White House’s new strategy on Iraq – their PR strategy – is to say that what we see and what we hear isn’t really the way things are…I kid you not. They probably think this is a great strategic move, because when the push-back comes, they’ll just say we want America to lose the war in Iraq. Guess they haven’t accepted the fact that we lost it a long time ago, and now it’s just body counts.
So my rambling point is that (1) we need to set the agenda, and (2) we need to let our Democratic leaders know that we aren’t afraid of who we are and what we believe in, and we would very much appreciate their adopting that mind-set as we move toward November.
Fiona!
You are completely sweet.
Jane, will you be passing back through the ‘Burgh?
Or maybe you already have…
Someday, if I can figure ou how my digital camera (that my brother gave to me this past Dec.}, I will show you pics of my 2 Std. Poodles, 2 cats (Abbys) and 2 parrots. I love them all and they watch out for each other.
Can you FedEx lemon garlic chicken?
grs @ 15
no aspic on carry-on !
Jealous! Oh so jealous! What a wonderful evening you two must be having. Christy, every single thing about your dinner sounds like total heaven. And Fiona with Kobe are priceless. Enjoy, and we all toast you.
THAT is the America that I know and love.
I am so happy you all got to spend some time together.
Oh, how wonderful!!! So glad you two Ladies of the Lake are together!!! Have a great visit!!

EPU’d:
Important question for CT folks:
What’s the status of Joe’s signatures — anybody heard? Have a need to know.
Thanks, Valley Girl! Nice to have you bring that forward…(and so nice to see you back at the Lake on a regular basis – we missed you!).
Jane and Christy – dinner sounded yummy – love lemon chicken (actually, we have chicken so often, my husband occasionally says he thinks he has the beginning of pin feathers).
We’ve had some great meals and snacks here at the Lake: Old Sow brings blueberries in the morning, someone always has good coffee freshly brewed. Primary night, there was quite a feast for those who were not too nervous to eat.
This is such a great community; I hope to some day be able to meet all of you in person.

Nooooooooo! All right, ground ship it UPS. But it’s probably going to be cold by the time it gets here.

Beel Nelson is approximately one ounce less exasperating to me than Joe Lieberman — if that — and by now, he knows it. OUT OF OFFICE would suit this flowah just fine.
On a happier note, if you want in on the “FDL of FLA” version of Peanut Meets Poodles that we’re plotting for Octoberish, just gimme a squawk at lotuslander AT cfl DOT rr DOT com.

That’s so beautiful it’s bringing me to tears. The little ones. The innocent creatures. The holy innocents who recognize and honor and love all living creatures. Pure love.
Oh, and Christy? Not quite the crazy hippie pad we all envisioned, but we know you’re working on it. heee.

My sentiments as well.
What a fabulous picture. Kobe is so damnably photogenic!
Following in Eli’s footsteps, I’ll express the hope that the Jane/poodles return tour & victory lap makes a stop in the Bay Area…
Anne said: It’s time to stop being afraid to be liberals and progressives. It’s time to stop allowing others to define what that means. It’s time to stop letting others tell us why we do what we do.

I agree. Microsoft definitions of liberal:
unprejudiced, fair, neutral, freethinking, tolerant, laissez-faire, sensible, unbiased, accessible, progressive, moderate, open-minded.
What’s to be ashamed of?
You know, Kobe does look a little wo’ out. Bet he sleeps well tonight, piled up with Katy and Lucy — and an eye out for Fiona in the ay-em.
Oh, and Christy, how’s the dachsie taking this?
Thanks for sharing this homey moment with us all Jane & Christy. You two girls are a mainstay in my life. Peace be with you, enjoy your visit together, and safe travels, Jane.
The peanut is older that I thought. What a doll! You can tell by her toes that she is pretty active…
cc, ygm too!
Sorry to have missed dinner, but there was this Lamont/Edwards/Farrell event in New Haven tonight. They all rocked…thank heavens we have smart, decent, principled people like these three (and so many others)…or else it would be so easy to think all is lost.

The right and the media love to define people by labels. It’s THEIR game. OK, I’ll play, I’m a moderate, your move! LOL

I assume Kobe carries a Blackberry to provide instant consultation for Ned when campaign tactical issues arise ?
The wisdom, sight, love of three year olds!!
Can anything be more pure than the love of young creatures for each other, before the world intervenes with its terrible reasons?
REALLY tears pouring down my face now. THIS is what we fight for, to preserve the love of innocents. God, give us the strength to fight evil so that this innocent goodness may live and prosper.
Retreating now lest my keyboard dissolve from the tears of life, joy, and innocent love, which I try to create in Russia also. THIS is HOLY.
I’m in awe. Just want to put a great big hug around all of you. Just precious — and, yes, what it’s all about. And Jane, sometime at your leisure (if you have any), I’d love to know where you found Kobe and crew: there’s another standard poodle in my life, I know it. Enjoy!!!

What’s the status of Joe’s signatures — anybody heard? Have a need to know.
There’s this from today: Town Clerk Certifying Lieberman Petitions
Not much there there, but it’s something.
Eli — we took the Southern route in order to see Christy and Peanut. But Swopa I think we are on our way to the Bay Area, not sure when but probably within the next two weeks. We’re calling you, be forwarned. But we won’t insist you play with the poodles.
The wiretapping decision seems to be another earthquake, following in the wake of the Lamont win (I’m not saying one led to the other, I’m just saying they are both seismicly important).
I’ve received 4 different emails about the decision from 4 different friends, none of whom are particularly political. That’s just amazing. And another friend I just ran into mentioned it the first thing out of his mouth after hello hehe.
I don’t know how all of this is going to pan out, or what the country will look like a year from now, but big stuff is sure going on…and it is unlikely to be just “more of the same.”
Looking at Fiona with Kobe takes me back to when my own girls were her age and younger. We had a yellow lab who was never fazed one iota by anything the girls did. They would lie down on Sam (for Samantha), use her as a pillow when watching TV, and often spend time just inspecting her all over – one time lifting up her eyelid because they saw her eyes rolling around in her sleep and wanted to see what was going on in there. Sam just kept snoozing away, even as her eyelid was nearly turned inside out.
Of course, Sam loved the girls, for one because food was always within easy reach, and they would also play with her for hours – throwing balls, and sticks – and occasionally, I would find Sam wearing some article of clothing – usually a bonnet of some kind. Sam would get a look like, “I know I look ridiculous, but they’re having so much fun I’m going along with it.”
Those were wonderful years, and seeing Fiona makes me miss that. Will have to wait for grandchildren, I guess!
That title SO made my day!
Enjoy youselves!!

gosh, I sent a message telling y’all how wonderful that picture — and your being together — is, and sending a hug, but it’s either lost in moderation or out in the ether somewhere. I just don’t have any more words to describe it, just God bless you all. Hope this one gets through.
Oops. My recipe for ValleyGirl got EPU’d.
Valley Girl @ 132
I hope this isn’t something everybody but me already knew about . . . like asking if anybody wants an easy recipe for tuna fish and noodles!
Here goes:
Troutdale Sandwich
A slice of sourdough bread.
Sliced Gruyere cheese to cover bread. (DON’T substitute for less worthy cheese.)
Fresh tomato slices.
Fresh basil – - whatever variety yer growing.
Assemble and broil.
Toldja is was simple. :)
Honest to God, though, the sum of these is way more than the parts. There’s something just savory about the combination.
You can put the tomatoes either under or on top of the Grueyer, depending on how much you like them cooked. Same for the basil.
My back made me give up gardening, but I keep a pot of basil growing in the kitchen window just for this.

Sweetums!
And by the way, during the drive home from a dusk-time walk with a friend, little Mr Sean Hannity and big Mr. Speaker of the House were just frothing about the NSA decision, especially since 20 terrorists were just arrested in England and blah blah how would that have happened without the NSA, I ask you, Mr Speaker? And what’s worse, Hannity noted, it looks like the Democrats may take control of one of the houses and then where will we be with people in charge of this country who don’t respect the Marines and 9-11, and 9-11 and so on…..
Mercifully it was a brief ride home and I could come to the lake for refreshment………
Nope. Though it’s possible I am.
Ah what a sweet moment, and a beautiful way to end the day for me.
it’s time to send Denny Hastert back to driving school busses . . .
Awwwwwwwww. Kobe and Fiona. Just, awwwwwww.

I miss those puppies and I only got to spend a half hour or so with them.
And of course, the Peanut is adorable.
So, the original Ladies of the Lake together in one house for the night. Rightards everywhere just felt a Strange Disturbance in the Force. As if all of the writers at the NRO cried out at once, and were abruptly SILENCED…

OT – JonBenet Arrest: Cable Ratings Recap
Cable news ratings were up across the board Wednesday as news of an arrest in the JonBenet Ramsey case broke. MSNBC arguably went overboard on the story, but it also arguably benefited the most.
http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/ratings/
I think I’m going to vomit.
The thought of Hastert makes me wax thus – these fucks go to Congress and all come home zillionaires, don’t they?
There is something wrong with this country, as V might say, isn’t there?
oops, the correct quote is “very wrong”
Jane Hamsher @ 44
There won’t be any need to insist. I’ll be looking forward to it!
Knew it wouldn’t take long before the right conflated the British terror plot with NSA spying…too bad that apparently was not a factor.
On the rare occasions when Dems are actually asked to appear on these news shows, they should do so prepared to dispel whatever the latest lies are coming out of the other side. Admittedly, that could use up hours and hours of air time, but it would be nice to see them try to make a dent in them.
What a cute picture! Have fun, lovely ladies.
If I got a perm would Peanut hug me like that? I should be in your neck of the woods a week from Monday. Going just south of Pittsburgh. (waving at Eli too!)

There’s also this, which is older, but sort of puts it in perspective:
On another forgotten note, Diane Urban, the Republican who was going to run as an independent failed to get the necessary amount of signatures in time to make the ballot. Too bad, she might have been a spoiler for Joe.
Bless the beasts & the children, by the way Carpenters…
JWR 7:01 pm — thank you very much for that.
i love her curled up toes.
After refreshing the page I have to wonder where my manners are!
Hello to Christy’s Mom!!!!!
Jane, if your travels take you through Denver, Drinking Liberally is next Wednesday. If it’s any other time, I’m sure some of the local folk would be delighted to get together.
SharonW — thanks much for that too.
Coz – I find the Jon Benet stuff a little disturbing too, but then again, a 6 year old girl knocked all the terror-terror! stuff right off the news… shows you how unimportant the terror is when a 10 year old murder case takes precedence…
Too bad that many in my political party can’t measure up to Republican Chuck Hagel when it comes to Iraq. Hagel has, as Arianna says, “hijacked the straight talk express” from McCain with regard to WH foreign policies.
Did I hear something today about the RNSC endorsing Joe Lieberman?
First off, about the pic: Awwwwwwwwwhhh! The cuteness scale goes off the board.

She had twins.

Beautiful picture. Rayne, I love your “Ladies of the Lake” moniker for the Jane/Redd/Fiona event. I think King Arthur and the Camelot folks would approve.

Loved the comment on WV directions. Once I was driving across Western VA and I got totally lost on winding dirt roads. I mean lost. I stopped to ask directions of the only folks I saw, two characters who like to look right out of Deliverance–really scarey, but hey I was lost and they were found. Waayell, they gave me the most complicated set of directions and I couldn’t understand a work they were saying but didn’t want to ask again as I was so obviously a Yankee, and more than a little scared, so I drove on, trusting that I’d know what to do when I got there. And low and behold, at each landmark and junction and turn, the language translated itself, and without a false move, I got to where I was going. Loved those guys, and the beauty of trust and language.

Joe Lieberman on Fox News 11/14/2004.
HoJo disses Howard Dean, says he would consider a post in Bush’s Cabinet, and says Bush needs Democrats to convince people this is a bipartisan war, and not a Bush War.
WALLACE: All right. One of the first fights that you’re going to face over the future of the party is who will be the new party chairman.
The other day, you were asked about one possible candidate, Howard Dean, and you said that he represents some people of one wing of the Democratic Party.
LIEBERMAN: Yes.
WALLACE: No endorsement.
LIEBERMAN: No.
WALLACE: Is there somebody you like better?
LIEBERMAN: No, I just think that — first off, Howard Dean hasn’t indicated that he’s going to be a candidate, but — and he’s very able, and he does have a constituency within the party, but it is one wing of the party. Howard used to say it’s the Democratic wing of the party. We’re all Democrats. I always resented that. And he represents one wing of the party.
To rebuild this party, we need somebody who’s more in the center, and more of a bridge-builder. I don’t have any particular choice for that, myself. It’s a job that’s going to be a tough job.
But, with all respect, Howard Dean is not the right man to lead the Democratic Party now.
[snip]
WALLACE: If the president asks — and there has been some speculation that he may — would you accept a position in a Bush Cabinet?
(LAUGHTER)
LIEBERMAN: …
But, look, I love the Senate. I think there’s a special opportunity for service here, in a Senate that’s too partisan, to bring the parties together, to get something done.
But I must also say that I’m enough of a traditionalist that, if an offer was made by the president, the commander in chief, to serve my country, I’d certainly think about it.
[snip]
WALLACE: Well, would it be good for the country to have some Democrats in the Cabinet?
LIEBERMAN: Excluding discussion of myself, I think it would be very good for the country to have some Democrats in the Cabinet.
I think this is a moment — the president won. He got 3.5 million votes more than John Kerry. He’s got an agenda. Most important of all, he’s our commander in chief in the war on terror and the war in Iraq.
And it’s time for us, including Democrats, to acknowledge that there are very few of us who have a policy going forward other than the one the president has. So let’s support it. …
Therefore, I would say, because this ought to be a nonpartisan, bipartisan interest, that the president would do well to have some Democrats closely around him, to make clear to America and to the world that George Bush’s policy in the war on terror is not just his policy, it’s American policy.

I am a contented pup, now. :)
Stephen Colbert wonders if Bush is refusing to endorse Ned Lamont’s Republican opponent in the Conn. Senate race because the president is so toxic these days. But Colbert also has another theory…
Partial transcript:
Colbert: Sen. Lieberman is now running as an independent, but there is a third, little-known candidate, Alan Schlesinger. Now, a lot of people out there don’t know who Alan is. The latest polls have him at 6%, with a margin of error of plus or minus 6%.
But, that is going to change with the help of the Republican Party. Take a look at the strong support Republican National Chairman Ken Mehlman gave Schlesinger on Meet The Press…
[several clips ensue…]
Colbert: Look, I’ve been hearing a lot of chatter about how the administration is hanging Schlesinger out to dry. Not true. If anything, they’re hanging him out to moisten. You see, all over the country, candidates are running away from the president, and that’s not an easy thing to do. Just as Joe Lieberman. He can not get the lipstick out of his collar. But in this case, the president is generously running away from Schlesinger. Nobody expects that. That’s why they won’t endorse Schlesinger. Unless it’s for this reason…
Watch it for the punchline:

I am a contented pup, now. :)
Wull good, li’l dog, cuz I’m a hurtin’ flowah.
Does MSM or MSNBC really think their ratings would be low if they gave todays court decision with all it’s implications the monumental attention it deserves?
Kurt, that’s wonderful news about your friends chatter.
Genius
Liberal. Funny how the Republicans have succesfully made that a dirty word in the public lexicon. To try to explain and convert the citizenry by offering definitions and metaphors is a defensive posture. Never explain, never defend, always attack.
“Perhaps you are in favor of the conservative policy of forced prostitution and forced abortion in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariannas Islands, bearing the tag, made in America, which is ‘a shining light for what is happening in the Republican Party, and you represent everything that is good about what we’re trying to do in America and in leading the world in the free market system’ according to Tom Delay.”

If you are planning on passing through the ‘Burgh, you’re more than welcome to stop by for some pasta with pesto (the basil plants my wife planted this spring have basically taken over the side of our house forcing me to break out the Italian cookbook as a way to combat their continued incursion). The doggies are also welcome to come and play with Vicki our collie and Kimo our extremely energetic rat terrier puppy.
Awww.I love the little dress Peanut is wearing.I can’t see the whole thing, but it looks like the dresses I made for my daughter when she was that age(20 yrs ago.My daughter kept some of those and now my granddaughter wears them).Little girls in sundresses with doggies, what’s not to love?Just,awwwwww.
(that stained glass window would look fab in my living room, the colors are perfect, lol)
Jane, if you drive through Kansas City, I have a furnished apartment in my duplex, with a fenced yard for the dogs…you are welcome to it….
