It’s like Oliver Willis says. Racist Republicans clearly can’t help themselves. Today, Tramm Hudson, the redneck chucklefuck Republican running for the House seat being vacated by Katherine Harris said the following:
"I grew up in Alabama and I understand, uh…I know this from my own experience; blacks are not the greatest swimmers, or may not even know how to swim."
Okay, well how about you say that to US Olympic Swimmer Cullen Jones?

Jones won this summer’s 50-meter freestyle event at the pre-Olympic trials in Los Angeles, beating out 2004 Gold Medalist Gary Hall, Jr., as well as former Olympians Jason Lezak and Michael Phelps.
But hey, good Republicans like Hudson never met a racial stereotype they didn’t like. What’s next? Watermelon jokes? A GOP minstrel show? A cross-burning on the steps of the House of Representatives?
So, what’s the deal? Was there a secret meeting at RNC headquarters where Ken Mehlman announced that the only way to win the midterms is to bring back lynchings and Jim Crow laws? What do you suppose Condi Rice thinks of all this?
Frankly, I’m glad this is happening. It’s refreshing to see this stuff out on the table. For whatever reasons, the Rightards have decided that it’s just too much work to hide their hatred and fear of blacks, Latinos, Asians, and Arabs, and, well, that saves me a lot of time and effort. Who needs lengthy essays deconstructing Nixon’s notorious "Southern Strategy" or hours and hours of research about 40 years of Republican policies that have routinely undermined the rights and concerns of non-whites when these brain-donors are clearly hell-bent on outing themselves as frothing bigots? Aw, shucks, Senator Allen, Weekly Standard, Tramm Hudson, and all the rest of you! You shouldn’t have. (You really, really shouldn’t have.) But, thanks to you, I can take the afternoon off! Get outside! Maybe go swimming, or shop for some books and music!
Of course, the Reich Wing will tell you that racism’s just not that big a deal anymore, right? Tony Snow?
"Here’s the unmentionable secret: Racism isn’t that big a deal any more. No sensible person supports it. Nobody of importance preaches it. It’s rapidly and thankfully becoming an ugly memory." (from Pox News Sunday, 10/05/2003)
Hear that, you silly darkies? There’s no more racism in America! Any problems you have are your own fault! You’re just being victims, you big crybabies! Playing the "race card"!
Normally, we’d cut over to Michelle MalKKKin here for further evidence, but she’s on vacation this week as she moves house again, but thankfully, she’s called in some b-list Rightards to cover for her. One of them wrote a column today on this very topic. Ladies and Gentlemen, here is Mary Katherine Ham on racism:
This country has race-relations problems to solve and a candidate’s views on race are certainly pertinent. Allen’s views will continue to get plenty of scrutiny, as they already have, and he’ll have much to prove to many voters.
But the gotcha game will never solve race problems by going around looking for racism in places where it doesn’t exist.
Right. See? All you people who are freaking out that George F. Allen, a sitting senator, called a Virginia man "Monkey Boy" because his skin is brown? You’re overreacting. No racism here! Move along! He meant it as a compliment! He was just trying to be nice!
Mary Katherine, be sure and take your Dramamine before you set sail on that big River of Denial, okay, hon? Could be a bumpy ride.
So, in conclusion, I just want to put out a big thank-you to the GOP. You guys keep on doing like you’re doing, keep on showing the world what a bunch of backwards, inbred, revisionist racist pigs you are SO WE DON’T HAVE TO! Thanks so much. You guys rule. All three branches of government. Until November, that is.

Today is my husband’s birthday. Some of you may remember him from the Dean campaign, or from some of the graphics he has created since then. He doesn’t blog as much as I do, and he’s not one to draw attention to all the stuff he does, but I just know there are a lot of people around the “internets” who know of him or have seen his work, and I wanted to let you all know it’s his birthday in case you’d like to sign his virtual birthday card (the link for commenting is at the bottom of the page).

Speaking of amoral Republican jerks, Joe Conason has a shocker on Holy Joe Lieberman tonight at Salon!
Y’all know how Joe Lieberman and his enablers have been playing the race-baiting game, castigating Ned Lamont for — GASP! — having Al Sharpton come to campaign for him? (Never mind that Al Sharpton is a kingmaker in the NY metro area and much of the rest of the Northeast.)
Well, guess what: Lieberman’s cozied up to a guy who makes Al Sharpton look like Mother Teresa — and he cozied up to him long after the rest of the world, including every black leader worthy of the name, rejected the man and his bigoted, anti-semitic stances.
I refer, of course, to Louis Farrakhan.
Well, Malcolm X always said he preferred the in-your-face bigotry of the South, since you always knew exactly who the enemy was, rather than being lied to (and therefore having to assume every white Northerner was a racist).
Republicans have a long history of using this particular tactic. They pander to their cretinous base by making some awful racial slur, then apologize profusely the next day. This allows them to have it both ways; they get out the desired message to the base, and then make nice after the fact to impress moderate voters with their sensitivity.
And the media falls for it every time.
They could always point out what great athletes black people are…
With that Malcolm X idea in mind, it does help when the racists make it easy to spot them, as they’re doing these days. Most people these days may be racist, but most of them don’t want to seem racist. So tell them, you support a person who would say something like that, well, that says all we need to know about you.
I’m a firm believer in ostracism and old-fashioned shaming. It works, on far too many people.

Damn, T! Straight up. I have like an 800 page manuscript in the oven trying to prove Republicans are racist, and then they pull this shit on me.

I don’t think Dubya knows who Malcolm the tenth is.
Hi there, Renee in Ohio!!!
Hippo Birdies to Mr Renee!!!
If only the Dean Team would have spent more time reading BFA instead of spending money on crappy ads from Joe Trippi’s partner, President Dean would have the troops home by now.
*sigh*
Good to see you’re still blogging, Renee!!!
What’s so scary to me is that the rightwing base people are proud of their racism. In the darkness of their “in crowds” they are loud, flaming racists, much akin to the KKK.
These are the same people who happily cry “bomb the middle east into oblivion along with all the brown-skinned ragheads.” We’ve all heard them on C-SPAN or read their “comments” on rightwing boards.
Just thinking that these creatures are living among us gives me the major creeps.
TRex – thank you so much for keeping this subject alive and out front when so many (especially in the media) foster it by pretending it doesn’t exist. If the media keep playing like it’s not there, or not a problem, then, like every other vile thing, the depraved extremists just get bolder and bolder. Before you know it, the KKK will be public and “in vogue.”
It just seems like so many HORRIBLE, inhuman things are becoming “acceptable.”
Not wanting to be a blogwhore or anything, but just wanted to make sure the night crew saw this hehe. If you have 5 minutes to spare and would like to help me out, please see my blog for details for a blog article I’m working on. The more people who respond, the more meaningful the data sample will be.
Thanks :)
Now go back to stalking TRex hehe.
Oh, Dubya knows who Malcolm the Tenth is. And I read an interview today that said he finished his book report of The Stranger, and will next dig in to Wittgenstein’s Tractatus. In between the bushwhacking and biking stuff.
Wonder if he’ll head to McCain’s birthday party this year?
thank you, trex. this goes to the heart of one of the oldest, most reliable wedge issues that republicans have used for more than a generation to divide the country.
historically, race has ALWAYS been used to distract from class issues in this country. so now, when the repubs launch a fullscale assault on the middle and working classes of this country, of course you see this coming to the fore.
a note on affirmative action. anyone who feels that affirmative action has “gone on long enough” or sentiments to that effect, is ignorant, willfully or otherwise, of the lasting pernicious effects of institutional racism in this country. to these people, the only folks who should be able to get into colleges based on who they were born to ought to be…sons and daughters of alums, like, say, gwbush. man, i shudder at the prospect of new cases being heard and decided by this supreme court.
the republican pandering and enflaming racist tendencies in their base is sickening. really, the only useful thing about it is that it’s obvious. allen in virginia, and again this doorknob hudson. i’m sure more will follow.
sorry for the rant. there was a time in the late 70’s when you could hope that really, americans got it, and that there might be a time when color would be irrelevant. then, of course, came reagan.

EPU’d Oilfieldguy –
An essay of the week in a 1945 LIFE Magazine begins with the quote, “I’m a Liberal too, but . . .”
FDR and the New Deal turned “conservative” into a dirty word, just as Woodrow Wilson’s betrayal and GOP attacks had turned “progressive” into a dirty word. FDR called himself a Liberal because progressive had been demonized.
The point being, the right wing plot to demonize Liberal goes way back, at least to the Claire Boothe and Henry Luce Foundations.
It really got traction when the Democratic Party split over the Vietnam War, with the labor conservative hard hat wing on one side, and the peace activist civil rights liberal progressive dirty hippies on the other.
Meanwhile, the elected Dems in DC played both sides for chumps, while raking in the K-Street big bucks.
And they wonder why we are pissed off . . .
ROTFL! Phoenix Woman, I just rushed over here to post a link to your DKos diary. I’m Prose of Sharon over there. Too funny.

Be sure to watch Spike Lee’s Requiem for NO on HBO next Mon. and Tues., or the full four hours on the 29th.
Life is going to increasingly suck for those goopers who are racist. Population trends are overwhelmingly in favor of the browning of America. The country is becoming increasingly diverse, and the pace of it is even accelerating.
I see this as a good thing. It apparently scares people like George Allen though. At least Alabamans can feel a little bit better about themselves…Virginia is looking a lot more racist than they are now!
Typo.
George F. Allen
Shouldn’t that be George Felix Allen (Jr.), every single f*cking time?
Jane said –
Jane, I agree with you and visit & read this Blog daily, I enjoy your writing immensely. BUT please … do not put words into other people mouths.
Allen didn’t say “Monkey Boy” at all, he used the term “Macaca” (which I realise means the same thing and he more than likely MEANT it as a racial insult. But it is not what he said.
If we are going to take the moral high ground and pull these clowns up for what they really are, then we must at least be accurate in our quotes and not start playing with words the way the GOP do.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be accurate when writing up what these people say, we don’t need to exaggerate or put spin on what the Repugs say…
They are destroying themselves. What we have to do is make sure the media represent it accurately and truthfully and if we start putting spin on what people say then we will lose our credibility quickly and it gives them an “out”.
I can’t believe you said that, TRex! A friend and I — when it’s time for a knowing glance over someone’s head (okay, in my case, around someone) — always mouth “D.B.O.M.”

Hey, TRex! Did I mention that you are a funny-funny, dear man?
Wess –
On this one, it’s not so bad.
George Felix Allen Junior desperately needs to make this go away — while he could get all puffed up with righteous indignation and deny saying “Monkey Boy,” it just opens the door on what he really said — “Macaca” is arguably worse.
No, George Felix Allen Junior stepped in his own racist bullshit big time, and he’s going to be rolling in it before this is over.
Barbara Boxer’s PAC sent out an email today slamming Allen for his comments, and pushing for actblue contributions to Webb. Good to see her jumping on this hard!
Quoting BB’s email, as she punches up Webb’s credentials:
Hmmmm . . . he’s against the war in Iraq . . . he’s against big Bush cheerleaders . . . wait a minute: that sounds familiar . . .
What would it take to get her to stand up for Ned Lamont? She could even reuse some of the email.
Joe’s “Clinton dem or Sharpton dem?” is just more careful code language for the same kind of nonsense that Allen’s peddling, IMHO.
[I’m not holding my breath waiting. Sigh . . .]
The “Felix” at all times works for me, since the little putz hates it. Big political future? Oh no, not tonight, bishop.*

Trex, A great commentary. Thanks. As a native Virginian we have a lot to be proud of this week. Jim Webb’s speech on foreign policy, and his comments to Virginians about how proud he is to be a native Virginian and that they deserve a better senator.
And how sad it is to see the racism that’s just been a bit underground. But I remember Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott, as well as all those votes, even the Katrina non-support votes. Holding up the voting rights bill. And remember Barbara Bush’s comment about how fortunate the blacks were to be in the astrodome–so much better than their homes!
Lamont. Webb, Tester. and many others will lead this country once and for all out of the wilderness. Hooray!
Lincoln, Pryor, Carper, Nelson, Landrieu should take notice.

The fact that this is being played out in the public arena boggles my mind!

we seem to be acquiring concern trolls and critics tonight … interesting
The Conason piece is wonderful – and the first thing I’ve seen that nails the Lieberman I worked against back in the day … it’s so very good to see him getting outed for who he is …
It dawned on me today that the threat of losing power has made the GOP (consciously or not) give up on the plan for the “permanent Republican majority.” There was a time when they talked about grabbing the growing Latino vote, business-minded immigrants, and maybe a slice of the African-American vote (though I never quite understood the logic of that one.) But when the going got tough, they sacrificed the future to maybe hold onto present power for a little longer, first stirring up anti-immigrant fervor (they said it was only about “illegals,” but we know better), then, as panic grew, out and out racism against anyone who doesn’t look like “us.”
All to fire up their racist know-nothing base, a fervent but shrinking portion of the country, and probably even of the GOP.
They’re eating their seed corn now.
Yet another thing to hang around their necks — any Republican for years to come who tries to get away with “I never said anything like that” (I’m looking at you, McCain) must be asked, “Did you condemn it?”
TeddySanFran
I wanted to tell you, in particular, that I went to Drinking Liberally in Lawrence KS the other night and someone gave me a bumper sticker for Democratic nominee for U.S. Congress Kansas 2nd District Nancy Boyda. She has put out a series of bumper stickers with different slogans such as “Because I have kids…Boyda.” Anyway, the one I picked up said, “Because I’ve Had Enough…Boyda.” I thought of you and your battle cry.
I’m still a bit lost in thoughts of Trex sorrow thing last night & peanut poodle wonderful tonight. However I must still say –
Anna Diggs Taylor, you Fitz you, thank you for standing up and doing your bit for this country when the bullshit came knocking.
Rove knows what he’s doing.
I remember when Gantt challenged Helms for the Senate in NC. The polls showed Gantt within reasonable distance, but the vote count was another matter – Helms in a walk.
We know the knuckleheads are bigots. Problem is, a bunch of indies suffer from the bigotry of low expectations. They’re not against black folks, but it just so happens they don’t associate with any. It’s just more comfortable that way.
This is the link between country club Reps and evangelicals – folks who, due to class and values, normally would not associate.
When LBJ integrated the South, and Dems went Republican (I can remember when there were no Rep primaries or officeholders!), fundie churches started schools all over the place.
So now, there is a two-generation population segment of voting age that didn’t go to school with blacks, don’t go to church with blacks, and don’t live in mixed neighborhoods.
Now look at the job front. As good paying jobs flee the country, many middle class whites start and own businesses. So they don’t work with blacks either.
These slips of the lips are red meat for the base.
The circle is closing in on Bush my friends.
Read the first line to this article in a paper from blood red Nebraska.
“WASHINGTON — President Bush is not frustrated over the slow progress in Iraq, the White House insists. But a lot of other Americans are — apparently including U.S. troops.”

Bush signs bill overhauling pensions
Law will likely increase use of 401(k)s
Thursday, August 17, 2006; Posted: 5:25 p.m. EDT (21:25 GMT)
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush signed a broad overhaul of pension and savings rules Thursday, giving millions of people a better chance of getting the retirement benefits they have earned.
snip
Some changes were sparked by corporate scandals that saw workers, who had put much of their nest egg in company stock, lose their retirement savings. The new law requires companies to give their workers more investment options.
snip
Rep. Charles Rangel of New York, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, said lawmakers may look back at the law as the \”Trojan horse that brought the end of the defined benefit pension system.\”
\”Erosion of the defined benefit pension system represents a dangerous shift from a \’we\’ society to a \’me\’ society, where every worker is on his or her own,\” he said.
snip
Bush praised the measure for enacting the most sweeping overhaul in more than 30 years. But he said the changes must be coupled with revisions to the two government programs that benefit retirees, Social Security and Medicare.

Thanks Teddy,
The jig is really coming up. The Republicans are now running backwards on Bush. They haven’t started trampling each other yet, but it is headed there.
Think about it. Bush is above 50% in four states. He and Cheney and Rove and Tony Snow and only his most loyal minions are telling anyone who will listen that if you don’t think the way George W. Bush thinks, you are a Taliban, Al Qaeda, Khmer Rouge.
They are destroying any good will that was left in the middle and are fast heading towards the wingnut 23%/27%.
David Broder, Chris Matthews, Friedman, George Will have all been the great establishment centrists and they are all bailing out.
It is happening.

Yeah! I heard Tom Davis, local congressman and former NRCC chair, on a local NPR show tonight spinning the Allen incident, and virtually every sentence out of his mouth was an optimistic lie — it’s just because it’s summer and news is slow (not like there’s war in the Middle East or terrorist scares or anything), and gosh he apologized.
In a different political climate, I might have found it annoying, but at the present moment it was really funny.
Bustednuckles! what do you mean, “Turkey and Iran have started shelling the Kurds??” where is this information?

Ilnur Chevik, editor of the New Anatolian newspaper in Ankara, said: “There is huge public pressure on the Turkish government to take action.” But he doubted whether Turkish forces would mount a full-scale invasion.”The build-up of troops is designed to say to the Americans and the Iraqis, the ball is in your court.” Tehran was also taking advantage of the situation, he said, “to show Turkey that it was taking action against its shared enemy, while the US, Turkey’s ally, has done nothing“.

I received an e-mail from the DSCC. They are having balloting to select candidates for House seats who will receive special help from the DSCC.
I cross-referenced their candidates with those listed on FDL’s ActBlue page. Most of the ActBlue candidates are not on the DSCC list, unfortunately. The following five are, however: Lois Murphy, Joseph Sestak, Patrick Murphy, Bruce Braley and Mike Arcuri. Some, but I don’t believe all, of these candidates have been featured in Howie Klein’s Blue America posts at FDL.
Anyone interested can go to the DSCC site and vote for their favorite three candidates at:

There’s one write-in slot, too!
In my admittedly, limited view ,of the ME the Kurds are the one ace in the hole that we had.
We should have done anything we could to encourage and help them. I know the Turks would have been pissed off, and that is no small concern, but they have always been allies. The Sunni’s and the Shi’ites are always going to go at it. The Kurds were a common enemy, and caught in the middle. They also have control of a great deal of Iraq’s oil.
So much for a foreign policy.
They are running out of friends and enemies.

Bustednuckles @ 131
A Bush fucks the Kurds… Now who didn’t see that coming?
Ladies and Gents, Set your Tivo Glenn Greenwald will be on Democracy Now tomorrow for a discussion of todays ruling. He just added a sweet little post.
Would somebody please explain to me (so I don’t have to call the WH and ask) how, exactly, the Bush Administration’s failure to get FISA court warrants for wiretapping alleged terrorist suspects (which it could have done up to 72 hours after the fact) foiled the London airliner terrorist plot?
Are they saying that if they had sought the warrants as the law requires (which btw have almost ALWAYS been approved by the FISA court) that ten jetliners would have been blown up over the Atlantic? That is quite a claim. I hope they have the evidence to present to the oversight committee investigations launched by the Democratic majority Congress in 2007.
Hudson is the best person the Repugs could do to replace Harris?
That speaks volumes.
Turks/Iran – Hadley supposedly met with the Turks a couple of weeks ok and gave them the US ok to deal with the Kurdish rebels situation. I’m wondering if he foresaw a coordinationwith Iran? How many times a day do we get played in the ME?
I watched Turley on the late rerun of Olberman. Excellent TSF – he was all over the “too Democratic, too tall, too short” whines. The thing that struck me most though? KO sucked me in and I didn’t realize I would have to watch actual tape of Gonzales fibbing about how legal the program is.
Am I the only one who noticed his tie? Oh yeah. It was.
Hastert can suck eggs. I may have to drive up to N. IL some weekend to work for Laesch.

As I was saying…
The “terrorist surveillance program” is nothing but a euphemism for not seeking the warrants required by the FISA statute…everything else they could do under existing law.

Meanwhile:
I really need to find that graphic I had of Bush as an infant toying with the globe like a beach ball while the world burns around him.
That is quite a claim. I hope they have the evidence to present to the oversight committee investigations launched by the Democratic majority Congress in 2007.
Smiling.
It’s especially interesting since the published reports so far say that they DID get FISA warrants.
Apparently, if they would have “stayed the course” with the Pres and a warrantless approach, instead of “adapting to win” and getting the readily given FISA warrants, America would have been much safer.
Damn that FBI – a pox on their house. Don’t they know they support the terrorists when they follow the law?
Mary,
The Turley quote:
Turley: “Every time a judge rules against the administration they are either too Democratic or too tall or too short or Pisces. All this spin – this effort to personalize it is doing a great injustice to our system. The problem is not the judge. The problem is a lack of authority. When Gonzales says ‘I got something back in my safe and if you could see it you would all agree with me’. Well, unless there’s a federal statute back in his safe, then it’s not going to make a difference.”
What is this about a tie?

You think? Go back and look at the Dennis Prager story from a few days ago.
Oh hey, y’all, perfect. Just the thread I was looking for to throw this into the shoebox.
As some of you recall, I unburdened myself the other night of the realization that The “New” Racism is just about all the Republicans have left, what with their utter incompetency and all …
Well digby at Hullabaloo, for his discussion of the Allen affair, found just the extended quote to support my realization, courtesy of the late Lee Atwater. If I may be permitted an extensive quote:
The rest of digby’s article on this point is quite good, as well. The words are not nice, but it’s what lies underneath them that is truly horrible.
GSD – thanks of the quote – the “or Pisces cracked me up”
Gonzales as the opening clip, explaining how legal the program was — he was wearing a yellow tie.
I had a three part link the other day – Gingrich, Snow and Chertoff, all fibbing away in yellow ties. I told Imman a much longer time ago, based on some personal experiences involving men and yellow ties that they were bad news on the truth front
So I just noticed AG the AG’s ties. ;)

For a late-nite thread, this is one piece of scary news after another. I don’t suppose there’ll be a decision made before the world tips off its axis that Bushco can’t govern anymore. Ever since Gilliard claimed Bush won’t finish his term, I’ve wanted to believe that.
One point about the British article cited above–seems Brits are willing to forego some freedoms too for the sake of countering terrorists.
Kingly, he is the size of a kitten.
Also:
The
United Nations got pledges Thursday of 3,500 troops for the force, with Bangladesh making the largest offer of up to 2,000 troops. But France offered just 400, and Germany — uneasy given its Nazi past of any possible military confrontation with Israeli soldiers — said it wouldn’t send any.
*It never even occurred to me until I read that.

Any time we say “Dem” or “Repub”, we’re talking about thousands and thousands of people, in a variety of positions, scattered all through the country, in all ages, sexes, religions, etc.
Neither party has a stopless record, and with that many people to check on, it’s easy to find bad apples on either side.
We can argue back and forth about how this person from this party did this yada yada yada, but the bottom line is this:
there’s enough history for anybody to take a few pieces of it and make their mind up to despise either political party.
The thing about Republicans and blacks is this: under Republican control of the White House,
(a) they purchased home in record-breaking numbers,
(b) they grew small businesses at another record-breaking pace and
(c) black millionaires increased in numbers greater than ever before.
I think anybody trying to paint an honest picture of the U.S. Republican Party as a whole should address those things.
Black support for the Democratic Party has been very high for decades, but their support for the Republican party is growing.
One reason is the number of black candidates for high-visibility offices and appointments.
It’s part of several national demographic trends that point to increasing numbers of Repub voters in the future- in four years “red” states will gain another 7-12 electoral votes, thanks to another census.

TRex,
I’m with you all the way here. Racism will never be eradicated. I’ve travelled pretty widely and I’ve never been to a country where it didn’t exist. It may not be as rampant in the US as it once was. That’s the source of Tony Snow’s “not a big deal”. But it never dies. It’s an infection that won’t go away. When the medication is stopped it pops right back up. Whether it’s outright physical violence, disdain, exclusion, or disenfrancisement, it will creep back into the equation.
The only remedy is to shine a light on it and boo it loudly.
Crap, I tried to edit a misspelled word and ended up posting twice. Please forgive me.

Got any references you can point to for any of those “facts”? Talk is cheap. Several of them look like classic misleading statistics, referring to “record numbers” that result from population growth, not policies.
And then:
I have never seen any poll or electoral source that indicates this. Can you point to one?
That would be great for the GOP if states voted rather than people, and if states never changed as their population grew. But in fact, the growth even in red states comes in the “bluest” areas. This is similar to claims the GOP made after the election in either ‘02 or ‘04, that the localities with the highest growth were mostly “red.” However, it turned out those were the ones with the highest percentage growth, which they had because they were the smallest. In actual numbers of voters, their growth was dwarfed by lower-percentage growth in larger cities and towns.
Voters are what counts, not square miles or states.

Clearly, it didn’t work out that way.

Dude. Friends don’t let friends blog high. Think before you hit ’submit’. This is a fairly open forum, but it would behoove you to come at full alertness.
What a wonderful day. A win for civil liberties with additional ammunition for those who want accountability of our executive branch. The Blogosphere is still on Senator Pryors ass. My politicalcompass.org says I am in step with Gandhi and the Dalai Lama. We got a little rain in our second year of drought and it’s in the sixties this evening. The end of a rainbow in my backyard this afternoon and fantastic meteor show tonight in the southern sky.
the big guy was nothing but trouble when he was a pup – always full of “good ideas” and bold enough to implement them… the baby is usually pretty good but today, over at VeryOldMother’s house (she’s recovering from surgery and dogs played in the yard but are not allowed in the house), here comes Puppy! all the way into the house and into the (sterilized) bedroom! hip-hop and smiling all the way! seems the screen door’s screen is a little bit rotten…
Okay, now REALLY, truly, I am going to bed.

No good racist crackers.
This is a fun site. And about the only “left-of-center” site that allows people like me to express views that might not agree with the majority position.
Hats off to your open-mindedness. It’s makes you a better comrade in this elaborate game we call politics.
And, if the price I have to pay is the occasional “I am a dufus” edits, it’s a small trampling of my rights.
As a conservative, I lean towards the “no blood, no foul” school of thought. So I have to maintain a consistent style.
li’l dog – around here pretty much everyone has designer dogs (and thinks all the other dogs should be too)… both of mine are from city shelters in L.A…. so I had to make up fake breeds for ‘em to pacify their admirers… the big guy is “officially” an All American Mountain Dog… and the pup is a Tibetan Retriever…
;-)
Let’s hear it for late night Lake trout!
NEIL !!!!!!
Dogstar 284:
Many Lefty/Progressive blogs welcome reasoned debate, and most don’t engage in name calling or threaten those with divergent viewpoints with being slapped in the face with the bloghost’s genitals, like so many of the far right ones.
Jeff Goldstein, I’m talkin’ about you!
OldCoastie – original photos, no pups.
“let’s impeach the president for lying”
ES,AR -uh-oh! no pups?? I just set the account up this evening… not a blond dog with pointy ears and a shepherdy looking guy on the grass??
Old Coastie – I like the idea of making up breeds. I’ve been calling my pup a shetland akita.
These troll-folk must be about as perceptive as those people who wanted to ban Huckleberry Finn because Twain had Jim and Huck say “N*******”.
Oh, same as your first post? My bad.
You know, that really ruined Neil Young for me. It sucks. First Fleetwood Mac (after Clinton made them his theme song), then the Dixie Chicks and now Neil.
Man, I’m so bummed.
TRex @ 246
sorry to miss out on trout.
watched Munich on DVD – thirty years later, not much has changed: Jews and Arabs are still killing each other.
little dog – They can turn it around in their head, not the heart.
we need to look at all racial prejudice — when israel invaded lebanon, some public figures here said jewish lives were worth far more than lebanese lives — i have lebanese friends for whom the invasion has caused great hardship & it sickens me to think my taxes helped send american bombs raining down on them
punaise – Trout were biting, slowed a bit.)
when the Big Guy was a Little Guy, he was super good looking and full of “personality” – drew his fair share of attention… I’d walk him around our fake lake, and folks would ask, “what is he?!?” and I’d say, “oh, he’s a mutt” and they’d act offended, like I’d tricked them or something…
so, I made up All American Mountain Dog and use that to extricate myself more quickly and pleasantly from the conversation… and inevidably, their uncle-cousin-brother had one of those too…
punaise, btw, creel good to see ya.

Use a fly rod and foil the trout.
oh, astral! she’s sweet! how is it dogs know just what to do in the snow? Big Guy had never seen snow until last summer and immediately he was running and sliding and making snowballs to bite!
we suspect Big Guy has some Akita… he’s big with the curly tail and “something” is akita-ish – the coat is obviously not right, but the rest of him may be… is your girl kinda extra independent?

astral – it’s a movie, sorry on dial up here.
She ain’t cute at all, is she? :))
She definitely has a mind of her own, too. She is possibly half akita (daddy left town early, apparently, and the ASPCA had no good guess as to his surname), and pretty darn smart. She learns fast, both the things we want her to do and the things she can get away with.
li’l dog – we think the puppy is a mix of shar pei and lab but there is some shepherd in there too… so, we may just be whistlin’ in the wind… but I thought Tibetan Retreiver sounded pretty legitimate…
sorry Eureka – I don’t have any photos up anywhere
astralplame @ 316
Maybe it’s the snow, but kinda looks like an Akita-Corgie. And that face!
OldCoastie @ 319
Oh, my. I hope she got the lab feet.
well, I better be hitting the rack – got a screen door to repair tomorrow!
is there something I should know about that combination? she’s definitely “lab silly”… and has a curly pig tail…
darkblack@201: unquestionably signals …
Indeed. I always thought the idea was to signal to the faithful what areas of policy were not going to be considered important—kind of like a score card for the illiterate. And I’m sure the insiders had all kinds of wonderful code names for their various evasive maneuvers. [shudder] Well, enough o’ that. On to something really edifying.

What a face!
Oh my! I must be black. I can’t swim. Growing up, we were too poor and did not have the transportation to allow me to have swimming lessons. Later on, in my 30s, I took lessons. Well, after the instructor had to use a pole to save me from drowning on my last day, I decided to give up my Esther William’s fantasies. My white limbs could not connect with my brain to be successful. I also can’t drive a stick shift. What ethnic group does this consign me to.
newtonusr – I have pondered the corgie possibility. She is so much smaller than purebred akitas, I figure mom wasn’t purebred, and dad was probably smaller. (and her face is wonderful — though a homeless guy once saw her and said “that’s the biggest raccoon I have ever seen!”)
LMAO! Alright! with that, I’m going to bed!
nanook of the north @ 289
I’m surprised the wingnuts haven’t called for Neil to be exported back to the great white north since “Living with War.”
OT but I have to recommend Judge Oprah Speaks a “Guest Post by Doctor Snedley, Doctor Biobrain’s Personal Assistant” that takes issue with both Judge Diggs Taylor’s slapdown of the Unrinary Expletive and Glenn Greenwald’s critique of same. It is (oxymoron alert) wingnut logic at it’s finest – one can only laugh or cry or both at once.
http://biobrain.blogspot.com/2…..peaks.html
According to Dr. Snedley, Bu$h is only required to abide by decisions made by judges appointed by the deciderator hisself and this ruling is null and void because Judge Taylor was appointed by, shudder, Jimmy Carter. Oh and the fact that she is both African-American and female renders her ruling even less valid.
Indulge me in just a couple excerpts:

OldCoastie @ 324
It’s just me. I find Shar Pei feet, um, disturbing.
I’m partial to big ol’ cat paw feet. My Striper has the best feet in the whole wide world, and happily he throws ‘em every time.
In Pup’s case, I should think that the lab part will more than make up for any deficiancies from the Shar Pei part. :)
li’l dog – she has lab feet with webbed toes… nah – not those funny looking things! her sharpei is expressed in a very curly tail and in a slightly roomy “dog suit”…
OldCoastie @ 332
Good news on the feet, but the little curly tail may work against her using those webbed tootsies to be a great swimmer.
Doncha love those dog suits that are two sizes too big?

How about, “Them Kurds are a resourceful bunch – they can hack it!”

With regards to the legal ruling, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it overturned on appeal.
But either way, this one will end up in front of the Supreme Court.
Whoever loses each round is not going to let it go there.
It could be years before it’s completely decided.
Dogstar @ 335
Of all the cases that ChimpCo has had referred to the Supremes regarding civil liberties, this is the one they can least afford to have reviewed. They’ll get smoked and they know it. Notice the extraordinary lengths they went to to keep Padilla out.
They will bail and divert, or the precious “moral authority” they claim guides their every move will evaporate even in the minds of their most loyal… stooges.
newtonusr, I must have heard you typing this:
WTF is ChimpCo gonna say now? “No one could have foreseen…?”
because I swear I was thinking it about the same time. And of course I’m sure the way-back machine would show that lots of people had forseen it—the Kurd-Turkey-Iran thing is hardly new after all—and tried to tell these fools.
Everyday, this bunch does between 5 and 20 things that are predictable, avoidable, and disastrous. Like me, I’m sure you and the other doggies wake and wonder what it’s going to be today: the Kurds being sloughed-off was predictable back in the ’90s. The body count is a fact of daily life under this bunch – the tally is the only mystery. Rice has her tent pitched in CheneyLand (she’s his bitch going way back), and that comes as no surprise. Anybody think Bolton is doing the US any good? How about Abu, or Mueller, or Rummy, or Chertoff, Bodman, Leavitt, Chao? This crowd is now their own self-fulfilling prophecy.
And what should we expect when Congress sits idly by…
Go Ned!
Joe speaks! Joe blusters! Courant:
And what did Reid’s spokesman have to say about that? “There’s nothing automatic about anything.”
Does it strike anyone as odd that Reid and the rest of the Senate Dem LShip haven’t bitchslapped RGJoe into next year yet?
I wrongly predicted that Lieberman would get a stiff dose immediately after the primary, and he would be convinced he had no prayer, bow out, etc.
For Dems to even consider this acceptable is awful. Now is the time, lest we spend resources for a bloody spat in our own caucus. We Dems are crazy!
BTW, I saw Reid speak @ yKos. He was engaging enough, but I don’t trust him. Any leader worth his salt would have ejected a party traitor the minute he floated the 3rd party idea. No balls at all.
Bit of news via DKos on the latest lawyer to join Valerie P. Wilson’s team.

Does it strike anyone as odd that Reid and the rest of the Senate Dem LShip haven’t bitchslapped RGJoe into next year yet?
Yeah, I know what you mean, but I’ve concluded that this is just not a very combative bunch, at least at the top levels. They’re even somewhat reluctant, it seems to me, to let some of their more energetic colleagues engage in some kinds of harrassing things that they legitimately could do. I mean, people like Markey and Waxman were more visible as thorns in the side of other, better administrations than they’ve been in this one. I think it’s at least partly that the leadership doesn’t help make sure that their activities get out there—because they, Conyers, and several others are quite active in making reports, communicating with the Executive branch, etc. Admittedly, I don’t watch this systematically so I could be wrong, but it does seem to me that passivity as you’ve described it is the main, er, policy of this group.
Morning west coasters and beyond……..greetings from Eastern Maine………classic summer morning with 56 degrees and clear skies…how are ya’ll ? (clutches coffee cup and waves blearily) What did I miss overnight that can’t wait?
I talked with my sister about this (lives in Tucson) recently. She says, and I agree with her, that when ChimpCo took over, one of their goals was to overwhelm anyone who would look into their activities. The so-called media sees a barrage of striking policy moves in rapid succession, all audacious and designed to prevent close inspection – they’ll be a new shit-storm the next day.
Think about Bush’s last round of appointments – all recess appointments, nearly all of them unqualified hacks. The next day, a mosque goes up and kills dozens; the next day, a terrorism alert and another rollback of environmental protections, or another assault on Social Security, or Medicare, etc. A blizzard intended to prevent scrutiny of any one issue. A blur. The fog of Bush, protected under the blanket of a pliant and compliant Republican House & Senate. Kinda puts Lieberman’s “quirks” in perspective for me.
I blame Dems in Congress, too. If you’re gonna be the minority, you are obligated to speak, and loudly. The loyal opposition? Give me a break! But that’s a whole different rant (the churchmouse-like Dems in the Senate & House).
Morning OS! See Acadia through the mist this morn? Get a load what Iran & Turkey have been up to, while the US tries not to look…

HI, egy!
What a cute headline over at Raw Story:
Bush admin. convict wants new trial
I’m not going to say that Tramm Hudson wasn’t a dumbass and insensitive prick for speaking those words about blacks and swimming.
But if there’s any dumbass eruption among Republicans for which I might consider the context, it’s this one:
Hudson was telling a story about how in his Army Ranger training, a fellow soldier who was black began drowning in the river. Hudson got him out, then administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on him, and then in the speech praised God that he (Hudson) had happened to be there at that time.
Somehow I don’t see a lot of the true NeoConfederate Republicans bragging that they gave mouth-to-mouth to a black man.
While Hudson doesn’t exactly deserve a break, I think it is a mitigating factor that he (supposedly) saved a man’s life.
On the other hand, what am I thinking? Given these Republicans’ bent for sheer fraud, perhaps in 5 days someone will prove that Hudson was never in the Army Rangers, that he was in fact in a shoe store and helped a black man find a better fitting shoe.
Loren Miles Farr @ 389
LMFarr, I guess I’m clearly with Lotus on this one. FDL isn’t the front page of, well, anything, and if you can’t use the occasional expletive (and believe me, talking about this Administration almost requires their use) amongst friends, then where can you?

Having been born and raised in the Old South, only a fool would believe that racism no longer existed on a widespread basis. Visit any, repeat any, southern city and tell me the powers that be haven’t marginalized people of colour. New Orleans should have been a wake up call, but the Republicans are bound and determined that people of colour have only one place in society: as non-voting servants and manual labourers. The ridiculous robes of the KKK have been replaced by Brooks Brothers suits, silk shirts, and Italian shoes. I remember when the term WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) was used for bigots. The only thing new is the fashion statement.

LMF, no offense intended, just trying to say that I enjoy FDL specifically for its free-wheeling nature.
Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY little Miss Yum!
You have a FAVULOUS day, ya hear?!!
Oh boy, birthdays and Norske!! What a morning! I’m still enjoying that darling picture of Fiona and Kobe.

Hi meta and imm! Yes, Fiona-meets-Kobe is an instant FDL classic (and something I bet Fi remembers with a smile 50 years from now too).
Happy birthday to your little one, tommy yum and good morning all!
Hey All-
I’ll probably get EPU’ed by the new morning thread…Just wanted to say hello, been working/gardening/shlepping kids too much to do more than read here lately.
But could not pass up commenting on the peanut and the poodles.
It was a joy to see that picture. Thanks!
Ned Lamont in Vermont tonight. Might try to crash that gate!
Oh, Old Sow. Fresh fruit is my very favorite item in my pastry toolbox. Gorgeous color, earthy flavors, and the smells! Oh my goodness.
Lest you think the US hosts the world’s finest collection of dingbat wingnuts, check out the UK’s contingent …
Cracks me up. LMF thinks that the language is the real obscenity. Seriously?
Eugene Robinson has a column about Georgie the Racist up at Wapo:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01192.html
I still think George knew what he was a-sayin’ as he speaks French and grew up at Mama’s knee, but this shameful story is still alive and for that I am grateful to the press.
MY LITTLE MAN-KIN
I think Tramm Hudsons remarks..as phrased, were racially insensitive. However, statistically speaking they are not inaccurate.
From the CDC:
Groups at Risk
* Males: In 2003, males accounted for 80% of fatal drownings in the United States (CDC 2005).
* Children: In 2003, 782 children ages 0 to 14 years died from drowning (CDC 2005). Although drowning rates have slowly declined (Branche 1999), drowning remains the second-leading cause of injury-related death for children ages 1 to 14 years (CDC 2005).
* African Americans: Factors such as the environment (e.g., access to swimming pools) may contribute to the racial differences in drowning rates between African Americans and white Americans (Branche et al. 2004). During 2002–2003, the overall age-adjusted fatal drowning rate for African Americans was 1.25 times higher than for whites (CDC 2005). However, these rates vary by age. During this time, African-American infants under one year had a fatal drowning rate slightly higher than the drowning rate of white infants (CDC 2005). Most infants drown in bathtubs, toilets, or household buckets. Among children 1 to 4 years of age, African Americans had a lower fatal drowning rate than whites. Drownings in this age group typically happen in residential swimming pools. African-American children ages 5 to 19 years fatally drowned at 2.3 times the rate of white children in this age group during 2002–2003 (CDC 2005). As children get older, drownings often occur in open water areas such as ponds, lakes, and rivers. If African Americans participate less in water-related activities than whites, their drowning rates (per exposure) may be higher than currently reported (Branche et al. 2004).
A CDC study about self-reported swimming ability (Gilchrist et al. 2000) found that: … * Among racial groups, African Americans reported the most limited swimming ability

Run upstairs and grab one while they’ll still melt th’ butter!
So the VA is trying to talk people out of the rampant and widespread Post-Traumatic Stress syndrome of our soldiers. This heartlessness is beyond words.
I’m feeling a slight tingling sensation from seeing the corner just ahead. The momentum of Chimp’s horrors is starting to sink in with just about everyone. The list of deeds is so long – it will take years to impeach the nut.

As am I, and I’m glad to hear the “Welcome to America” part getting more play. Wingers can debate all they want what “macaca” meant, but there’s no mistaking that he said, in effect, “look at this foreign guy” about a native Virginian, just because of the color of his skin.
Me too, Redshift.
How many people remember the very short period of enlightenment in America that began in 1968 and ended in late 1988? It was a time when people generally regretted the genocidal wars against native Americans, were ashamed to publicly admit to harboring racist attitudes, and were educated about a genuine act of home grown terrorism when Christians in Missouri rose up against Mormons and slaughtered over one hundred of them, (men, women and children,) driving them from Missouri to seek religious freedom in America’s western frontier.
Then the effect of the republican “Southern Strategy” begun in 1972 and was partially responsible for George H. W. Bush’s, (”Willy” Horton – who was never referred to as “Willy” his entire life,) presidential success, that marked the end of enlightenment in the U.S.
Prejudice, superstition, (religious charlatans,) and the resurgance of romanticizing the Confederacy were legitimized by the open acceptance of these unwholesome attitudes, and the unstated promotion of them. Disenfranchised racist democrats found a home in the Republican Party, religious freedom began its transformation toward Christian power, and over 70% of the people learned to believe that the dark bogeyman named Satan is a living, breathing entity that walks among us causing all types of anti-social behaviors for which many are certain they will be forgiven because of their overt proclamations of righteousness. They feel confident that forgiveness is theirs when the “End Times” are upon us, because a poorly written book of short stories told them it was true.
The end of the enlightenment occurred on December 12, 2000 when a corrupt Supreme Court legitimized the disenfranchisement of tens of thousands of African-American voters as it raised a new icon of the American Dark Ages to the presidency by the name of George W. Bush.
Confederate flags flew proudly once again revealing a profound lack of understanding that the secession of the Southern states was an act of treason. Prejudice raised its ugly head as many people began to openly express long hidden prejudices that extended to non-whites and most if not all foreigners. Right wing Christians sought to abandon the Constitution to expand fascist control over society through behaving as if freedom of religion does not have the component of freedom from religion. Religious con men once again rose to prominence in society permitting their congregations to return to displaying their prejudices with great vigor and scorn.
The manipulative, divisive and evil Southern Strategy was a success and cancelled advances in social behavior, the understanding of history, and discoveries in the sciences leaving America in the hands of hapless, incompetent and destructive leadership that set out to destroy the middle-class, increase turmoil around the world, and ignore the necessity of excellent public education to satisfy a new god – the god of profit named Greed.
They claimed that the old god wanted it this way, and here we are, torturing people, using paid killers to “assist” the military, killing civilians, being deceitful as a matter of daily communications, ignoring the Constitution, hiding behind self-rightiousness to act as hypocrites, arbitrarily choosing which laws to obey and which ones to break, laughing at the concept that a person is only as good as his word, and dehumanizing ourselves as we dehumanize others.
Welcome to the right wing vision for the 21st century.
Welcome to the late 1930s Nuremberg.
In general this is a great point, but you got some facts wrong here.
Jones is not an Olympic swimmer, although he has the potential to be. The meet at which he just won the 50 was not the “pre-Olympic trials”. It was US nationals, which is used as a selection meet for the Pan-Pacific games, next years’ world championships and the World University Games. It is *not* a selection meet for the Olympics. The Olympic trials are not held until a couple of months before the Olympics in 2008.
Also, Michael Phelps, great swimmer though he is, is not a sprinter and never, ever swims the 50. Jones would undoubtably beat Phelps in the 50, but it didn’t happen at this meet. Even if he did beat Phelps in the 50, it wouldn’t mean that much, as there are probably 20-30 swimmers in the US that could beat Phelps in the 50. Now, if he beat Phelps in the *200*, that would mean a lot.
He did beat Hall and Lezak (who are both sprinters), however, and his time is legitimately very, very fast. It was a 21.9, and only 4 americans have ever gone under 22: Hall, Anthony Ervin (another African American), Tom Jager and Matt Biondi. There is a lot of buzz in the swimming world about Jones now, based on that swim, and he has a great shot at the Olympics in 2008.
Anthony Ervin is an even better example of a great African American swimmer (for now) than Cullen Jones, as he won Olympic gold in 2000, tying with Hall.
