As we were discussing last night, since Ned Lamont won the Connecticut Senate primary, the intervening six days have seen the Republican party going out of its way to show its true colors with regards to its (very) thinly veiled racist agenda and its intolerance toward people of color and white people who support them. Of course, it goes way beyond that, but that’s as good a place to start as any.
The bottom line is that the Republican party is an elite club for wealthy whites and token minorities who will join their ranks and spew racist swill alongside their white brethren. Anyone who tells you differently is a liar, and anyone (like Ann Coulter or Michelle MalKKKin) who insists that liberals are the real racists is either mentally ill or they’re simply being willfully obtuse.
But let’s look at the evidence, shall we?
Back in April, this blog featured a series of posts dedicated to exposing the writhing grub-white underbelly of modern GOP racism in the blogging world and in the world of talk radio and television news and beyond. All the posts in the series were outstanding, and the message that came blaring through loud and clear at the end of the series was that today’s Republican party is merely a JC Penney White Sale away from its cross-burning, lynching, Jim Crow roots. A mere 40 years separate us from the forced integration of the southern states, when segregationist Democrats in the south crossed party lines to become Republicans and moderate Republicans opposed to American apartheid left the GOP to become Democrats.
40 years is not a very long time. Many of the wealthy white men in positions of power within the GOP made their political fortunes in this era and today, from their perches high on their ivory towers of privilege, they continue to push policy and political initiatives which routinely disenfranchise minority Americans. Who could forget Trent Lott’s ham-fisted attempt to justify the segregationist views of Strom Thurmond’s 1948 presidential campaign?
"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over all these years, either," Lott said at last week’s party.
Reality-based English translation: "These problems" equals "uppity ni&&@rs", i.e., "If Strom Thurmond had won the presidential race and upheld racial segregation in this country, fat white chucklefucks like me would have a lot easier time maintaining our choke-hold on the reins of power."
The RNC clean-up squads were dispatched, Lott was forced to apologize, and faced a nominal punishment, as is the likely fate of Virginia Republican George Allen, who is currently under fire for calling a 20-year-old Virginia man "Monkey Boy" in Tunisian slang and "welcoming" him to America, because OBVIOUSLY a brown-skinned liberal person couldn’t actually be born and raised in lily-white Virginia! Of course, the staffer, S. R. Siddarth was born and raised in Virginia, but to a Real Republican, that’s simply not enough. You have to be born and raised in America with skin whiter than Ivory Soap to be a "Real American" like George Felix Allen, Timothy McVeigh, or Unabomber Ted Kaczynski.
Then take into account the push by a group of southern Republicans to derail the Voting Rights Act earlier this summer, which, thankfully, failed. But how about my own state’s Photo ID voting requirements, which are being pushed on the public by the same legislators opposed to the renewal of the Voting Rights Act, and which is vigorously opposed by state Democrats, the Southern Poverty Law Center and other progressive organizations. Not to mention the staggering indifference shown by FEMA and the administration toward the stranded victims of Hurricane Katrina. Mike Chertoff had to be told in a live interview by NPR’s Robert Siegel that the Convention Center was even there, let alone that a few thousand people were trapped there in desperate hunger, filth, and fear.
But if you back up and look at the even bigger picture, the Republican party’s entire 2006 electoral agenda is based around punishing people for not being white. Republicans on Immigration equals Stop the Evil Brown-Skinned Latino Hordes from Coming Here to Live. Republicans on Terrorism equals Stop the Evil Brown-Skinned Arabs and Islamic Asians from Blowing Up Our Planes and Bridges. Republicans on Ned Lamont equals PLEASE Stop the Evil Black Voters from Banding Together and Forming a Legitimate Threat to Our All-White Boys’ Club. The time has come to punch through their codified euphemisms and strike at the truth of their rhetoric. Republicans are melanin-ophobics.
Kanye West was right. Republicans are the Party of Racism. So, start pinning them to the wall on it. Ask a Republican, "Why do you hate black people?" or "Why are you so scared of Mexicans?" or "Why do you think that all Arabs are terrorists?"
REPUBLICANS ARE RACIST FUCKERS. STOP LETTING THEM GET AWAY WITH THIS SHIT.
Ask Ann Coulter what she really means about Maxine Waters and Affirmative Action, or MalKKKin and her Reconquistas. Ask George Allen why he calls brown-skinned people monkeys. Ask the Weakly Standard what the fushizzuck they meant by that stupid cover with Al Sharpton as Step N Fetchit.
The gilmpses of Old School White Fright we get when these dullards slip up and speak their minds are not aberrations. It’s when the real soul of the Party of Bigots slips its leash and evades its handlers and jumps out, however briefly, for us all to see. Then the handlers and spinners come out and tell us, "You saw nothing! You heard nothing! The views Sentaor Whitey McCracker espoused in his unfortunate remarks do NOT represent the views of the GOP and blah de blah diddy blah…"
And that’s the big lie. Is your skin is a half-tone darker than a tan paper bag? More? Then, my friend, you are The Enemy to the Republican Party. Unless of course, you want to act, dress, think, talk, and legislate from a position somewhere to the right of Adolph Eichmann, THEN (and only then) are you welcome in the Republican tent, but first you have to be willing to sell out and actively work against other minority people. Only then do you become the kind of useful idiot the Republicans so desperately want on their side.
So, Firedogs, let’s call them out. Coulter, MalKKKin, Glenn Beck, William Bennett, George F. Allen, Krauthammer, Kristol, and Lott (oh, my!), Limbaugh, Hannity, John Gibson, and all the rest. It’s time for them to know that we see through their thin layer of PR spin all the way to the ugly all-white heart of racist, Repugnican America. This is 2006, fer fuck’s sake! Plantation America is no longer a viable concept. Unacceptable. And it’s up to us to raise the necessary Hell to call the public’s attention to the true, viciously exclusionary nature of the Reich Wing.

Nailed it! Kanye was right!
NED and WEBB!
Oh TRexxie…you are on FIRE tonight!!!
Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jon Stewart was all over the Macaca thing tonight! I love how the progressive blogosphere is making these stories go wider.
The Rethuglicans appear to be in complete meltdown mode.
You know what really gets my f*cking goat? These lily-white upper-most decile dorks who have sought to widen the divide between their gated and pampered communities and the people who cut their lawns are IN MY COUNTRY.
My people were here FIRST.
And some of my people worked damned hard to get here, to stay here, realized the American Dream — only to have these same racist goons say they aren’t worthy? Bullsh*t. On a stick.
Even Andrew Carnegie was an immigrant and the progeny of laborers.
Home Run!
GOP-led Indiana has a worse voter ID law than Georgia. This spring it went into effect. Our local Congresswoman who has held elective office since 1972 presented her official U.S. Congressional I.D. card at the polls. It was initially turned down with TV cameras going! A supervisor quickly intervened and approved its use, sparing Indiana the embarassment of disenfranchising a member of the Black Congressional Caucus…
Americans are in denial about the racism even though it remains the most potent force in American politics. The only thing more common than racist messaging are denials of the same.
Without capturing the racists and closet racists, the Republicans would not have been able to compete in national elections since the 1960s. It isn’t all of the party, but it is much larger than any margin of victory any Republican has had since Goldwater.
The hard thing is that there is really nothing that any of us can do about this. It is only one generation since the US Supreme Court began dismantling the American apartheid system. The culture of a country doesn’t change so few years.
some more questions, which prompt sputtering responses, wide-eyed stares, general looks of stupdity/confusion/guilt/gradual recognition…
“why do you hate the Consitution?”
“why do you hate The Bill of Rights?”
“why do you hate Our Founding Fathers?”
“why do you hate George Washington?”
“why do you hate minorities?”
“why do you hate the impoverished?”
“why do you hate the starving?”
“why do you hate non-Christians/non-Jews?”
“why do you hate the downtrodden”?
“why do you hate the underpriveledged?”
“why do you hate our soldiers?”
“why do you love the unborn progeny of rich white people?”
and the winner is…..
“why do you hate Americans?”

“PR spin” you say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rPQCPwdwHQ
It would be nice if our side would stop picking at the easy, semi-nutricious fruits, and go for the big money. Go for the “good whites” on *our* side – nominally at least – who are die-hard racism deniers.
You know – the ones whose typical refrain is “it’s not about race, it’s about class”. They’re the ones who pay lip service to the evils of racism, and yet, somehow, whenever an actual *instance* of it arises, they always, magically find some other conjectural means to explain it away.
These “good white” racism-deniers are also those who are shocked (shocked!) about the racist behavior of other white Americans. By being (better: “feiging”) shock and outrage EVERY TIME racist behavior is displayed, they give themselves the appearance of a reprieve from the responsibility of acknowledging an historical systemic problem. For if the problem were indeed historical and systemic, the shock (shock!) would be quite out of place. Hence the shock (shock!) at racist behavior is simply another aspect of “good whites’” racism-denial.
I summarize the view of the “good whites” as: “if he didn’t say ‘nigger’, then it ain’t racism”.
The racism-deniers are what enables the out-and-out racists that you and everyone else never tires of talking about to continue to exist.
A suitably cynical person could well wonder if the unwillingness to talk about the racism-deniers – always favoring dicsussion of the out-and-out racists – is a deliberate attempt to hide not the problem, but what buttreses the problem.

The Last Plantation – Capitol Hill Police Officers Speak Out!
http://www.guerrillanews.com/v…..Plantation
Excerpt from current post at Howard-Empowered People, about how George Bush narrowed the gap in 2000 among Muslims, receiving only 10% less of the Muslim vote than Gore. (Whereas Dole received 50% less than Clinton).
“How he did that was basically, again, the Republicans were able to build a faith-based alliance with the Muslims. Also, I remember watching this debate in 2000. It was the second debate, and they asked a question about racial profiling of African Americans. And Bush talked about that and then he said Arab Americans are racially profiled in what’s called “secret evidence”. People are stopped, and we have to do something about that. So Bush spoke up against racial profiling in the debate, and supposedly this was a reason that a lot of Muslims went over to the Republican side, because Bush brought up the issue of racial profiling and he spoke against it.”
Hard to imagine that now, huh?

Re Allen, little noted, his “Welcome to America and the Real Virginia.” Yes, Virginia, that would be the backwater redneck racist Real Virginia, down by the state line, where ol’ George was among friends and feelin’ the vibes of his ol’ racist self.
All the more reason to get J-Lie on the record about whether or not he’ll still honor his pledge to be a Dem. yeah, right. Yet another serial adulterer, morally challenged in family/marital values lecturing the rest of us.
Maybe FDL’s first Hall Of Shame entrant?
the Trollosphere is already mobilizing for assault tonight. Please do not feed the racist scum !
I have my tap shoes on, all ready to go. (”Must restrain myself from kicking too high”)
If George Allen is freedom, uhm I mean French, why do Republicans care about him? Would they put a frenchman in the white house?
WRT George F. Allen, I watched the video a couple or more times and realized that for all his supposed polish as a public speaker and experience on the campaign trail, he made another gaffe while addressing Sidarth as a macaca. He actually said to the young man– “you show it [the film] to your opponent”. Perhaps too much drinky? Or was he just pandering to the lily white crowd and jest saying any little thing that popped into his addled mind?

And as for saying that Mr. Webb was not familiar with southwest VA– the real VA (in his remarks)– he’s a-lying or dumb or both. From Jim Webb’s official website:

I’ve been looking forward to this post all day. I was hoping you’d hit Allen, and I’m glad you brought it into the wider context. Nice work!

Aw, thanks, Pach! I live to serve.
Sorry about that Trex…here’s the quote:
“Here’s the unmentionable secret,” Snow said on an October 2003 edition of Fox News Sunday, “racism isn’t that big a deal anymore.” Snow argued that “no sensible person supports” racism, arguing that the problem is “quickly becoming an ugly memory.”

The Guardian
America is indeed at war. The attacks in New York and Washington have raised the dangers posed by international terrorism to a new level. But despite the awful familiarity of the devastation, an effective US response is likely to be something unfamiliar.
For the US, the weapons of this war should be information, law enforcement and, rarely, active military force. The coalition that will form around the US and its Nato allies should agree on its intent, but not trumpet its plans. No vast military deployments should be anticipated. But urgent measures should be taken behind the scenes because the populations and economic structures of western nations will be at risk…more st the link
…The aim should be to attack not buildings but people who have masterminded, coordinated, supported and executed these and other attacks….
…Our methods should rely first on domestic and international law, and the support and active participation of our friends and allies. Evidence must be collected, networks uncovered and a faceless threat given identity. In some cases, astute police work will win the day, here and abroad. In others, international collaboration may be necessary. Special military forces may be called on to operate in states that are uncooperative or unable to control their own territory. In exceptional cases, targets will be developed that may be handled by conventional military strikes.
But this will be mostly arduous, detailed and often covert work to track, detain or engage and take down adversaries, rolling them up cell by cell and headquarters by headquarters….
…We must strengthen our protective measures at airports, at utilities and public service facilities, such as communications networks, and prepare necessary public health and disease control capabilities for the possibility of nuclear and biological events.

Read the article siun. Thanks for the link.
Yes the bigotsphere is alive and well.
Someone called out Howie Kurtz today for never mentioning what a racist freak show the bigotsphere is. He gave some namby-pamby response that didn’t address the question, and continues to marvel at the amazing skills of Charles Johnson. Can anyone find even ONCE where Howie has called the wingnuts out on this? Because frankly I’d be shocked.

Don’t think I haven’t thought about it. I just don’t know when I’d find the time. I’m working full time in addition to blogging every night.
Of course, a lovely advance would enable me to take a leave of absence and crank out a manuscript.
Great post TRex!
Wolcott came back today with a post “The Servants Quarters” about…you guessed it the RW racism.
http://jameswolcott.com/archiv…..quarte.php
My eight-year-old and I talked about racism earlier today; we’d seen an ad for HBO’s Spike Lee special on NOLA. The faces shown in the clips were anguished and African-American. My son asked why things were still not fixed in NOLA, why these people were still not home.
Damn, how do you answer that question? It’s as plain as the nose on my face…or the faces in that ad.
There’s a reason they simply didn’t care enough to do the right thing.
For TRex…well for anyone who loves dem some furreigners hehe.

For any FDLers in the New York City area this week, there’s a muscial playing at the NYC Fringe Festival called Walmartopia (walmartopia.com) that is highly recommended. Don’t take my word for it, try The New York Times, The New Yorker, Village Voice and others who have recommended it for this weekend. They’re hoping to go “national” with this thing, so the more people that go, the better. Plus, it’s just REALLY fun to take on Wal-mart through song and dance. Never done a post like this before, but did I just whore, or pimp?
Blogs, Documentaries, Books, and now Musicals all serving as pushback against our Corporate-controlled culture. Now dance dammit!
You named 11 scum bags, let’s pick 20 of the worst of the worst. Then let’s hire a private detective @ $300/day each. That is 6K per day or 180K/month. Certainly it wouldn’t take more than a month to feret out these weirdo/scum bags.
That would be worth it!
TRex at 8:45 pm – Broke as I am, I’d buy your book in a hot second. In any case, thanks for what you do for us here in the meantime.
I found myself in the projects of Baltimore once. A truly horrible place, miles of crappy multi unit dwellings, small fires burning and children running everywhere. I thought to myself that those kids don’t stand a chance. Through a wingnuts eyes, s/he would have thought–there is your welfare dollars working.
They have no compassion and no depth whatsoever. It is the wingnut welfare entitlement culture is the real problem.
When is this REALLY OT?
IS BUSH AN IDIOT? http://www.crooksandliars.com/…..-an-idiot/
I haven’t read the comments yet, but wanted to get this in before I hit the sack.
Once again today on a Talk Radio show I heard the call for re-instituting internment camps like we did during World War ll with the Japanese. The show host whom I use to think was a more moderate host agreed with the caller.
This was brought up while talking about profiling individuals at the airport and how terrorist who were attacking us was muslums and not grannies that needed to be searched.
This is not the America I was born and raised in. Where does it stop? When the camps are full do we then build Gas Chambers and Creametoriums to remove the overflow of interred people? How sick have we become as a Nation when we do what Hitler did?
If we don’t take back the House and Senate this year I fear that we will never again have the kind of Nation I was born in. At this point we will have to know that we are indeed a Fascist Christian Nation ruled by an Insane Madman called the Decider.
Lord I pray too you, please show us your Mercy and set us free.
Oh Kurt, now that was fun!! Love me some furriner stuff like that, yum!!
You miss a bet, Rex. As the biggest homophobes are often in the closet, so the biggest racists are often “passing.”
Someone ought to be asking Allen whether he knows “macaca” because he heard it used by his mother or to his mother. No, it’s not fair, but why should the rethugs get all the swift-boat goodness?
Last week, I got two fortune cookies in one package. The fortune from the second one:
“The clash of ideas is the sound of freedom.”
Stamping out racism is a tall order. But let’s start with our government.

Rick Lyman of the NY Times has an interesting piece today on immigration growth and the census, but he clutters up the very interesting data with nonsense like
TRex, you hit the nail on the head when you noted that “40 years is not a very long time.” For too many researchers, reporters, and regular folks, “ever” means “in the last 20 or 30 years.” Are Native Americans the dominant demographic in the Upper Midwest, New England, and the Rocky Mountain states – you know, all those places previously untouched by immigration? Arrgh!!!!
Forty years ago, the current crop of wingnuts on welfare were listening to their elders lament the demise of segregation. Now they’re all grown up, and sitting in far too many seats of power.
In those same forty years, how many people of color have cast votes in Congress? How many people of color have sat on the judicial bench in the federal courts? How many of either can you name? And how many are republicans/republican appointees?
*crickets*
Thanks, TRex!
Olbermann is covering Georgie Felix Racist right now
One day, I was riding in a livery cab with an elderly neighbor, and the driver was listening to Limbaugh. I let Rush go on for a couple of sentences and I asked “Is that Rush Limbaugh?” and he said “Yeah, I listen to him every day.”
Then I said, “Wow, Al Franken’s right. He really is a big fat idiot.”
And before he could say a word, my 82 year old friend gently said, “Please turn that off, young man. My husband was in WWII so I don’t have to listen to Nazis.”
The driver turned off the radio, and for the rest of the 20 min drive I could see him turn beet red and the hairs on the back of his neck stood up.
Rest her soul.

I stumbled upon that because of V for Vendetta hehe. The lyrics from Pardesi, Pardesi were sampled and used in one of the songs playing during the end credits. Click here, and then click on BKAB Speechless in the Myspace musicplayer thingy to hear it.
T-Rex, your usual high standard…
When I first moved to Iowa, I was stunned to hear some of the racist things people said. My son was a sophomore in high school, and even his teachers said, and tolerated, some shocking and stupid things. Then there was the woman I heard complaining about the family trip to Disneyland: why can”t those (Japanese tourists) just talk Amerkun?
My current theory is that there is so little diversity here, that people who don’t look like you are The Other, not really people. I am curious whether the tide of immigrants coming to work in construction or meatpacking will force the slow realization that we are all human.

Oh yes, Indiana is horrid that way. I have never been there and never thought about that state being racist and right-wing, but my brother has lived there for years. He told me. He went out to protest the FIRST gulf war and (in W. Lafayette), the racists were out in full force.
My mind was opened to Indiana.
Ok, did anyone see David Gergen on Colbert? He thinks we need to back off, or something to that effect. You’ll love Colbert’s response, it involves pounding his fist in his hand, as in noooo! attack! attack!
I’m watching the late version of Keith now, Olbermann got in a great subtle dig. He showed an attack ad Spencer put out against Hillary (911 911 Osama 911, be scared of HER!) where they misspell it “Facist” (typical remedial Rethugs, eh?) Keith said, “well they corrected the spelling of “fascist”, … not the emulation of it.” Mwahahahaaaa

Susan in Iowa,
I doubt it. You should hear the Republican candidates here in Oklahoma openly declaring war on illegal immigrants. I want so badly to attend one of their “town hall” meetings and ask them, specifically, will they increase and enforce withering fines and license revocation of business owners profiting nicely off of a terrified and powerless workforce?
In the words of TRex–ATTAAAACK!
When picking a site for testing the American war machinery, the Republican administration chose Iraq, an Arab country. Another sign of their racist intents.
Somewhat OT, but …
Maureen Dowd’s Wednesday column is one of the all-time greats. Seems that between bouts of brush-clearin’ and other “manly pursuits,” our Dear Leader is letting his Inner Frenchman come out and play.
This is a real jaw-dropper: our Preznit’s vacation booklist includes (pause to set up the punchline) “The Stranger,” by Albert Camus.
I have no idea what to think about that. Fortunately, La Maureen does, and it’s priceless.
Oilfieldguy @ 69
Add to that question–or is your outrage limited to non-voting powerless workers?
Oh, I think I get it now. Felix’s mom was from among the Tunisian elete, and he used the Tunisian slur to refer to Mr. Siddarth as one from the other side of the tracks from his mom.
Felix’s mom is a Star Bellied Sneech.

Of course not. And Chucky Genocide has his plausible deniability of leaving the race-hatred to his commenters, even though he has a ban-list several continents long for people who dare challenge the mob. I’d like him to be up against someone other than Arianna next time. Ideally, armed with some choice comments from That Place.
I can’t imagine that Howie hasn’t visited That Place. Let’s challenge him on that.

Shell — the last “known” lynching took place in Marion IN in 1937, if memory serves. (*ilson will helpfully correct me if I’m wrong.)
You can imagine my trepidation when my non-white father moved there in the early 90’s. Thank goodness he’s oblivious about social cues, bordering on Asperger’s.
It seems sometimes that people who live where there really are only white people (or only WERE white people until recently) assume that they cannot possibly be racist because they aren’t southern. It is strange.
TRex,
We also had the Fox Dim-Stars calling for “Muslim only” lines at the airport today.

My take on Racist George Felix Junior: most people his age who grew up in the south have at least some experience of the civil rights era. George Felix Junior didn’t get to VA until he was in his twenties, having spent his youth in California and Chicago. Out-of-stater arrives at college, turns into a Cope-dippin’, cowboy-boot wearin’ redneck, as if the 60s had never happened. And for George Felix Junior, the southern 60s never did happen.
He’s redneckier-than-thou. He’s like the guy who arrives in a foreign country and becomes a parody of the locals. He’s a walking, crap-spouting time-capsule of racism.
Look at all the happy racists:

*Warning – GRAPHIC
Wow. How exactly are they going to check on that? Order a halal meal, get a cavity search? Perhaps one of the Faux dimwits can suggest giving Muslims little yellow crescent pins.
Wow, the Indian American Republican Council actually found a way to blame Jim Webb:
It’s disappointing to see Jim Webb using an Indian American volunteer in a demeaning fashion in order to garner attention to his campaign.
Thank you TRex for addressing this issue that is so important to my family as I am the mother of two young adults adopted from Korea and foster mother of mixed race children.
Last year Arizona passed Prop 200 which requires ID to vote but our Election Board sidestepped voting rights investigation by allowing other forms of ID besides a valid Drivers License, two other forms of utility bills because ONCE, just ONCE in the last 10 years ONE non-citizen voted in Arizona because in Arizona you must be VERRY Afraid of the Brown people who are invading, sucking up all the welfare, bankrupting our hospitals and destroying our schools with undocumented hoards.
I am really sick of the hate the brown people tour. The creeping demonetization brown people, first blacks, then Arabs, Hispanics then if they go after Kim Jung Il, it will be MY kids next.
Felix grew up in my neck of the woods in about the same era… I simply cannot imagine how he could drive around with the confederate flag on his car in this area – it would have been seen as so incredibly strange – he musta been some kind of weirdo in high school…
the only event, if his family was racist, that might have really set the whole thing off was the Watts riots in ‘65… it was a scary summer, but I sure don’t remember any general discussion in my neighborhood that “ooo, those bad black people!” but rather seen as a tragic event… but it must have just made Georgie Felix Allen wet his pants…

Here you go GSD, I haven’t read the lyrics before to Greenday’s song:
“American Idiot”
Don’t want to be an American idiot.
Don’t want a nation under the new media
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mind fuck America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn’t meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow.
For that’s enough to argue.
Well maybe I’m the faggot America.
I’m not a part of a redneck agenda.
Now everybody do the propaganda.
And sing along to the age of paranoia.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn’t meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow.
For that’s enough to argue.
Don’t want to be an American idiot.
One nation controlled by the media.
Information age of hysteria.
It’s calling out to idiot America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Where everything isn’t meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow.
For that’s enough to argue.
“Is your skin is a half-tone darker than a tan paper bag? More? Then, my friend, you are The Enemy to the Republican Party.”
Well, I pulled out my brown paper bags and alas I didn’t quite meet full enemy definition. At least with a Bloomingdales bag. Being properly classified is very important to racists. Many times I am asked about where I am from, a not-so-subtle attempt to determine race and origin. I’ve learned to have lots of fun with it. Sometimes I say I’m Jewish and oddly that seems to satisfy them. (WTF?)
The legacy of Ronald Reagan is that he taught this generation of Republican assholes how to speak in racist code, how to make racist’s feel righteous in their racist point of view, and how to cloak the BS as an American value.
Rove and the current generation have perfected the process. The full out assault on voting rights ensures that we will have to fight the civil rights fight again. But this time it will be different. If minorities decide to unite against this a change is gonna come.
But this time it will be different. If minorities decide to unite against this a change is gonna come.
Oh, please, please, please…
If only all the “out” groups would pull together, we could knock those fascist bastards down and then stand on their necks for the next hundred years.
Minorities have to stop our intramural fighting and unite on this one. It impacts us all.

Chris Cilizza’s taking lots of heat for his comment today that “the Fix doubts strongly that the Senator was purposefully using a racial slur.” This pushback thing is starting to catch on — there’s some Iowans saying, no, Chris, this comment does resonate here; there’s some Virginians saying, no, Chris, we know about Allen’s long history on this subject; and there’s many others saying, why, Chris, did you omit any mention of the etymology of the word “macaca” as well as Felix’s mom’s heritage:

Jimmy Carter’s son, Jack Carter, won the Democratic nomination Tuesday to face Republican U.S. Sen. John Ensign (news, bio, voting record) in November in Nevada, where voters also were picking candidates in a wide-open and sometimes-zany pair of primaries to replace popular Republican Gov. Kenny Guinn.
Carter claimed 80 percent of the vote in early returns to defeat political unknown Ruby Jee Tun of Carson City, a middle school science teacher. Ensign won with more than 90 percent of the vote over Ed “Fast Eddie” Hamilton of Las Vegas, a former Chrysler Corp. supervisor.

That’s just me being nice. You should have heard what I said when Lott’s mansion got sucked out to sea in Katrina.
Kurt 9:15 pm — ah, that was great! Loved the percussion, the fusion-ish sensibility in that BKAB. Wonder if Ethan is related to Matt and Nate?
Mocha Dem — oh, you said it all. We’re having issues in my neck of the woods with factionalism; while I understand the dynamics, it is crazy-making to see minority folks fighting “turf wars” while missing the big picture. My area is geographically divided, with a split between economics and race mirroring the physical divide. The economically disadvantaged and minority community is divided further by churches.
Of all things. This guy wants to be a Bishop, this guy is already a Bishop, this other area supports an older Bishop; if you’re Baptist, you belong to one of these handful of churches, but if you’re a Catholic whose family originally came from greater NOLA area, you are persona non grata.
Sure, this same kind of thing plays out in communities regardless of race, but it doesn’t disrupt a voting block. In this case, it does, particularly at local level. We can’t get these different factions in the same room, let alone get them to agree that it’s in their best interest to support the one white Dem who’ll fight for them all as well as the folks on the other side of the physical divide, than the African-American from this church, or that African-American.
With my background I can understand the distrust of outsiders and the screaming need to have folks from within the community emerge as leaders — but this factionalism is not solving either of these problems, nor does it address the larger challenge of that racial/physical divide that splits them from economic opportunity.
Sometimes being a person of mixed race/mixed ethnicity is a pain in the rear, because you can see both sides of the issue and are so small in number and power that persuasion is impossible. Gah.

I hear you Rayne. I think one of the things that is least understood by the white majority is the diverse set of views within a single race. Just like everyone else income, education, geography, and religion shape how we treat each other and how we vote. It is disheartening to hear sexist and racists points of view from members of your own race.
I know that Republicans are trying to exploit the homophobia of some African-Americans, meanwhile the AIDS epidemic spreads. At the same time they are also aggressively reaching out to upper-middle class blacks so then can experience the warm embrace given to Ken Blackwell.
Our point of unity, at minimum, should be an insistence that civil rights are not violated on the basis of ethnic origin and voting rights should be maintained for all.

Glenn Greenwald’s book was fasttracked; sure, he could afford the time off, but he was able to get published by a small publisher — and WE helped by buying it up. You already have a model you can point to as an example of how to do it.

What is the other state that never had a lynching?
In 1920, three black circus workers were lynched in Duluth Minnesota, after being accused of a rape that probably didn’t happen. My mother’s cousin was one of three whites sent to prison for inciting the riot; no one was prosecuted for the lynchings.
A Google search on the incident; strangely enough, a Finnish man was tarred feathered and lynched in Duluth in 1918.
Today, Duluth has gone a long way to atone for it’s past — but the ugliness was real, and people of color in America still suffer the consequences of the serpent under the table at the Constitutional Convention.
On the front page of the RichmondTimes-Dispatch tomorrow is a story of reactions to the Allen racial slur. All reactions are negative to one degree or another. The Indian community here is irate. (Noticed some Republican Indian group defends him, as someone noted here.) It’s going to take a lot more than this story, sad as it that may be, to defeat Allen. Larry Sabato believes he’ll regain his Senate seat. Webb is going to need a lot of $$ to counter the mean Allen ads that will appear in a week or so.

Yes, how dare Webb subject his volunteer to a serial racist, (the nerve, to run against a sitting Senator racist!), a racist that didn’t realize most Rethugs don’t know French, much less South Africa/Belgian slurs, but that the world and bloggers would notice the ingrained denigration that said volunteer found completely offensive from a US Senator, which therefore caused it to be picked up by all major networks in a flash in this racially charged atmosphere the Racist Reichwingnuts perpetuate. *gasp*

One of the saddest things is that a lot of people who listen to Limbo don’t have any perspective with which to register how vile he and the whole phenomena are. Rush appeals to their self-perception of victimhood. Then he goes on to poison the atmosphere. Once you’re sucked into it, barring a miracle, it becomes your world view. Another cab driver with the banality of evil stamped on his forehead……

If you are serious about writing a book, start by talking to the rep who fast tracked Glenn Greenwald’s book. Publishing is a brutal business, and for every author that has a best seller, there are 1,000 who go into the remainder bin.
It’s a worthy endeavor, but it is tough to make money.
‘Night, Rayne! Sleep well, you and the little guy.
Attack attack attack!
Sad thing is that there are quite a few whites who are not racists or bigots out of deep seated twistedness, but out of resentment due to the mistaken supposition that big government handouts to minorities are allowing those other people to hang out, use drugs and have sex. Among a number of similar lies, explicit, implicit and subliminal. Hey, otherwise those other people would be working to feed themselves, and there would be no crime. That’s a twofer for the Norquist Bushite wing of the GOP. Grind the faces of the working and nonworking white folks as well as minorities. That gets up the resentment, gets up the blame game and makes them resent some more. Then cut some more, blame whoever is darker and handy at the moment. Say any kind of social program to raise incomes or increase job skills, or help with medical bills will go to the lazy pampered minorities anyway -hey when’s the last time you saw a hard working HS educated white guy slaving at two jobs for his family get anything? That’s the script.
If that racket can be broken, the Bushite GOP will go the way of the Federalists, Whigs, Know-nothings and other extinct political parties. At this rate, the Bushite GOP will be the whole GOP, and whole thing would go down.
It’s a sick racket. And very intentional. I know there are quotes of Norquist and his gang explaining why tax cuts or job training programs, or any dang thing for the working class (even a lily-white one), don’t fit with their plans. They need to have them resent the government, and effective programs of any kind will not do for that. Does anyone remember those quotes or have a link?
Sad thing too is that I know there are a small (but maybe significant?) number of minorities who buy into it. I have met them.
Can’t help adding that I still think that TRex misses the old limousine liberal subliminal message in TWS Lamont cover. Lamont looks like a loser befuddled stereotype of sad emasculated tame male liberal. Hillary and Sharpton are going to drive the sap places. Sharpton is not just a step and fetchit, he is a stepinfetchit who is in the drivers seat of a castrated “nice” white guy loser who won’t feel the pain cause he got some money. Unlike the poor white fearful reader who has no cushion and will suffer under the coming ClinSharp tyranny. This kind of spew is a twisted art of the highest order. Unless there are at least two crosscurrents of subliminal messaging, it hasn’t reached the acme.

GSD … getting bluer or not, NH was quite the racist swamp and we lived in the “civilized” SW part of the state. Of course, with only … what … 3% of the population non-white, the racism is pretty invisible unless you are one of that 3% (or their mom.) My daughter was asked by school counselors if she was an exchange student, if she spoke English, told by “friends” that it was “too bad you’ll never have a date since there are no asian boys” etc … this replaced the “chink” and “flatface” of the grammar school playground. I will note that we stayed in NH because she also had some very good friends and a great time living with horses and training as a dressage rider … but the racism was intense – and ignored by the schools who were sure “we don’t have a problem with race here.” There’s a lot I liked about live free or die but there’s a lot wrong too and most of that emerges from the isolation of NH culture outside of the Boston suburb areas.

i used to live in Waterloo. African Americans were brought there in the ’20’s and ’30’s to bust a porter’s strike. Waterloo had some pretty nasty violence in the ’60’s. I had come to Iowa from Louisiana so it took me a year or so to figure out how things worked. I will never forget how, when I met some of my Iowa colleagues one of them shook my hand and grinned as he said “Well, when we heard someone was coming from Louisiana we thought you would be black!” Iowa, however, is less intolerant than in a lot of other places. I have personally witnessed racism almost everywhere I lived and that includes Africa, the UK and Russia

Yeah, I grew up in NorCal, in a “white flight” retirement community where melanin-rich people, especially those of African descent, were just not welcome. When I was in 8th/9th grade, a family moved in that had school-aged kids; they moved to a nearby university town after those couple of years because it was just too hard. I was taught by my parents that racism was wrong, but my community was so lily-white that as a kid I was afflicted with the kind of racism where I was terrified, on those few occasions when I did encounter a person of color, that I would do or say “something racist.” One reason that if I ever have kids I want to raise them in the city, or someplace very diverse.

The use of violence and intimidation has increased and will continue to rise until there are impeachment trials and criminal convictions after the elections. If the fascists win the election then the war is over and if the Dems win and don’t pursue legal actions then the fascists win and democracy is history.
The fascism in our gene-pool which originates in the terrible compromise over slavery in the constitional convention, has spawned a full blown anti-democratic cancer in the body politic which threatens our hsitory as a free country. Make no mistake folks, this is for all the marbles, when the anti-fascists lost in Germany in 1933, it took the rest of the world and 12 years of horrible carnage to irradicate ‘em.

Funny, but even some people on the “left” of things haven’t put the pic into context!
Not to feed the trolls, but…
Let us be clear: Does anybody actually think RGJoe had Bubba up to CT without making the link to Black voters (at a minimum)? Lieberman is a pimp and a whore, but the pic goes beyond all that – “Look @ me – I marched way back when, and now I’m embraced by the first Black President!”
Only someone with serious entitlement issues would look back on the career he’s had, and think he can scold Bill in ‘98, then use him as a prop in ‘06. Charges of racism, aimed at who?
OK, maybe just a snack…
[Yes indeedy the troll was trexed several times in the “Where’s the outrage” thread I see. Time to clean up its newest shitpile in aisle 185.]
During my break to bathe and read the papers I opened yesterday’s editorial page to see the odious Cal Thomas with a big headline on his normal screed called: ” ‘Taliban’ Dems, win in Conn.”
Go ahead asshat Cal, keep bringing up your Rethug party’s biggest failures and fuckups.
JC’s hot, but Juan Cole has brought in one scary dude just now:
“Ray Close, a retired CIA analyst of Arab affairs, writes:
‘ Despite vehement official assertions to the contrary, indications are increasing every day that the Bush Administration has already decided that conventional diplomacy will fail as a way to manage its confrontation with Iran, and that military action against the Teheran regime has therefore already reached the point of final countdown….”
The whole article – with Juan’s occasional comments – is a MUST read:

TRex: “Who’s with me? “
Right here!
[rant]
Thank you, TRex. This was just clearing up on me this evening, as I considered the implications of the confidence with which George Allen staged his chilling dumb-show version of a lynching (here too). I realized that every single message they have sent out in recent weeks has been saturated with racism, and I mean the kind that goes quickly to pitchforks and the intimidation of unco-operative white people.
We have had Joe Lieberman and surrogates talking about “Al Sharpton Democrats”, and “Maxine Waters Democrats”. We have had Ned Lamont depicted as the Al Qaeda candidate—definitely the latest in coded racism, along side smash-and-grab roundups of brown suspects (I know Mr. Roberts apoligized to Mr. Lamont, but I’m just sayin’ what he had earlier been infected by)—and the increasingly open racial nastiness of certain of the talking heads we have all noted around here. And we have a national campaign strategy that for several federal election cycles now seems to be predicated on the systematic disfranchisement of large numbers of Black voters. TRex and commenters have summarized it all. It’s hardly news to me, since I’m (a) an old-school Black person; and (b) old enough to remember the Dixiecrat switch. But this last little part just slid into place for me tonight, and it’s either terrifying, or the first rays of dawn:
They have nothing else left. You don’t really need me to rehearse the list of their failures—for them, disaster is the new black. Now, I know we all have our theories about starving the beast, Norquist’s bathtub, creative chaos, and birth pangs to explain why it is that this devolutionary slop the current crop has made of national and world affairs is in fact exactly what they intended. And certainly it is true that the GOP-in-charge do not give a rat’s ass about whether they succeed in governing well, so long as their rice bowls get filled.
But isn’t it also likely that they thought they could slip-n-slide their way through eight years without a Katrina, an Iraq insurgency, an uppity Hezbollah, or—did I say a Katrina?—and so prove that all this agonizing over good government that white liberals like that Al Gore do, and swaggering about how good they are at policy like that jumped-up Clinton, is just a bunch of horse puckey? After all, nearly everything you can name about government—health, education, welfare, police, even the military—why, that’s all about what TRex so deftly called ni&&@rs and nothing else, really, so how hard could it be?
If you think back, the whole theme of the 2000 GOP campaign can be read as Putting Real White Men Back Where They Belong (Complete with a Flock of Adoring Negroes on the Side). But the punchline is, all events have done is to make it clear that they’re not even competent enough to keep their imagined audience of genteel white outsiders thinking that the dark people are being pacified. That’s a major blow to their mystique. Now that they know they’ve been seen naked in so many realms, it’s only natural that they start grabbing at sheets.
[/rant]
Rant over, I would say one perhaps surprising thing, and that is that I think we can do things to help this situation, talking frankly about it being the first. Since I can remember when the signing of the Civil Rights Act started the procession of the white South to the Republican Party’s eager reception (You can vilify LBJ with me because of Vietnam, but only so far), that means I’m also old enough to know that this is not as bad as that, which was still an improvement over what had preceded it. So don’t disparage hope.
“and that military action against the Teheran regime has therefore already reached the point of final countdown….”
As ReddHedd noted this morning, the extension of 2/3 of the Alaska Stryker Brigade and recall of the third which had recently returned here (Alaska) to Bagdhad, is disheartening. I think we may see a lot of military movements to Iraq or elsewhere real soon being explained one way or another – or not explained.
The more I read, though, even since the cease fire seems to have gone into effect, convinces me we will have no choice but to go nuclear.
I’ve been trying to get more information on neutron bombs on the web. If they were developed by the US, USSR and Israel, as has been speculated, the secret is well kept.
prostratedragon
Outstanding observation.

Yeah, the confluence of the US’s lack of ground assets and BushCo belicose tone brings that into sharp relief.

They really can’t make this connection. It is pure supposition. You and I may believe that Allen’s mother would have used the word as a pejorative but we don’t KNOW that she taught it to her son. The fact they are pointing out that Allen’s mother is Tunisian and what he said is used as a racist slur in North Africa is about the best they can do.
This is a real jaw-dropper: our Preznit’s vacation booklist includes (pause to set up the punchline) “The Stranger,” by Albert Camus.
Who writes these summer vacation compositions for Bootsy? Someone with a rancid sense of humor, I suspect. I can’t get to Dowd’s column at the moment, but I hope she remarked that The Stranger concerns a fellow who, among other signs of his alienation from people, kills an Arab as if the man were nothing.
plus, Tuesday, Assad was stupid enough to dare W to use nukes. If there was an ounce of brains between Bush, Olmert, Assad and Ahmadinejad, we’d be in a better place…….
prostratedragon @ # 201:
The White House will be announcing later today that Bush has finished the complete works of Camus and is pondering whether to read the plays of John Genet or Sartre’s _Being and Nothingness_ next.
What a perfect cover for his real efforts as he voraciously consumes technical reports from Air Force planners between bouts of brush cutting. That guy is some genius. The whole world is misunderestimating him.
Ed*ard Teller @ 197
Why, thank you, sir. And I feel so much better, too;>)
Whoops! At least until I saw your link to JCole and got reminded of something else. [sigh]
Oh, and regarding Allen’s mother, it seems equally likely to me that she used the word around him, and that he heard others use it of her, regardless of her actual appearance or ancestry, just because she was from Africa. And of course, I’ve read that Allen studied French in school, where he might have learned it (or even have read L’tranger). If you have a strong stomach, there’s a blog over at frameshop that provides some evidence that the use of the word as a racial insult is both common and recent in this country, so you don’t need any connection to the French language to know it.
Well, off for the last round o’ readin’.

Don’t I wish. This is how the Republicans beat the Democrats time after time. The right is united in their hate of anything not white while the Dems split up into single issue groups that fight amongst themselves for the right to be the number one minority. What a waste. The Repubs must laugh their ass off year after year after watching us do most of their dirty work for them. Sigh.

Well, this was simply great T’rex once again. Insitutional racism and fascism do go hand in hand. And then we got to talking about the rest of the US global hegemony and the US proxy wars and it made my stomach start to hurt. I pray daily that we the people are communicating clearly and loudly enough to prevent an escalation of the perpetual war into the nuclear. But I’m not very hopeful that we will be heard in time. However, if the tiny cracks in the MSM wall start to widen…..

What is it with the south that they lovee to vote for imported moronic yankee bigots. A virginian like shrub is a texan.

Gah, ain’t even had my tea yet and already committed a mini-atrocity. Was washing my mug just now when a big ol’ moth fluttered up from the countertop. Thinking myself rill smart and humane, I trapped it in the mug to get it outside. But stepping back into the kitchen, I saw its fresh corpse stuck in there. Equating the Republican party with the KKK is the most irresponsible thing I’ve seen on this website. It doesn’t accomplish anything in the way of dialogue.
I’m an independent, and this kind of thing really is troubling to see. I don’t doubt for a second that there are racists in the Republican party, but I also don’t believe for a second that every Republican is a racist.

HI, medaka and twolfie — we a-blowin’ and a-goin’ this morning (less one soggily kilt moth).
CNN story on george allen now
daryn kagan just stole my comment from yesterday
twolf1 @ 234
I was ujst going to ask if the george alien racist freak show was making any niroads into the media this (your) morning over there. I do so hope that someone does some reporting on the word and his Tunisian French mama.
But Dr Sinker, whether or not you like the equation isn’t the point. Snark is never exactly 100% truth–its purpose is to wave a large flag, to draw attention. This IS a very racist country. There are also Democrats who are racist. But from where I stand, it seems that the GOP fosters more intolerance than does the Democratic Party. I wish that no one in the USA felt so frightened by their own fears that they would submit to supporting such radicals as now inhabit the upper levels of US government.
It is important for us the more moderate to use the actions of the GOP against them, and invoking the KKK with regard to over the top comments (in code) by politicians is just about as strong as it needs to be. If it gets more of “us” to question the vast “them”, whether we choose to use T’rex’ words or our own, is just what is called for. And those who are offended by T’rex, get over it, I’m sorry, choose other “weapons” to try to quell the avalanche of hatred than to attack the messenger.
Bingo, twolf … still no reference to Ma Allen, though. And how’dja like Carol’s “So — you say ‘potato’ and I say ‘patata’ …”?
no reporting on the Tunisia connection yet–but they got most of the rest of it I think.

Just how in the world can this
airheadwoman think that making a joke of the word “macaca” and using that word is even close to appropriate behaviour, much less as a highly visible news person on a nationally-telecast program watched by millions of Americans?Just what passes for brains with this person? Would she still think it’s funny and appropriate to use and joke about the N-word?
And who wants to bet that CNN management doesn’t get it either?
Ooooh, awoke to Deidre Imus [Don’s wife] putting the screws to Rick Santorum on the Combat Autism Bill. A thing of beauty! Good for her.
I haven’t followed its path, she refers to a colloquoy he had with Kennedy and the issue of leaving out tamerisol, not investigating it? My first question, what about Kennedy’s nephew’s aggressive writing about potential tamerisol dangers, wouldn’t the Senator be up to speed on that?
Santorum’s campaign pushed her to write an op-ed for him in the Philly Inquirer. Don told her not to.
Santorum’s sucking up big time. Imus talking about respecting that Santorum’s a man of his word, even if he totally disagrees with Santorum’s wingy stance on things like abortion and something else I didn’t catch.
My take: the Imuses were in a take no prisoners mood, especially Deidre. Don Imus did soften it, but God help Mr. Santorum if they should reach an epiphany that the Combat Autism Bill is a cynical tool to gain their political support.
Wait a minute, you’re not rid of me THAT easily, this girl gets started on REAL work s-l-o-w-l-y…..after my classes at FDL University are over…
Twolf, TTYL means what?
TTYL – talk to you later
Prairie, remember the very odd, creepy Santorum/Imus conversation when Santorum talked about getting together with Deidre?
lest we forget — the GOP has no Black Congresscritters whatsoever and only 3 Jews (2 Senate, 1 House)
Digby was polite enough not to bring out this particular aspect of the comment, but yes, Holy Joe (R-CT) is getting into the coded-racism act, attacking Lamont for appearing with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.
Dr. Sinker – while no one is suggesting that every Republican is a racist, one has to wonder why a person would necessarily want to be associated with a party where racism tends to be an issue on a pretty frequent basis.
And rather than circle the wagons around someone like George Allen, to protect him from criticism, a party truly devoted to racial equality should be calling Allen out for this, shouldn’t it?
And, finally, an apology isn’t particularly sincere when it is phrased, “If I offended, I apologize.” What that is saying is, I don’t see anything wrong with what I said – too bad you do.”
Morning, o venomous ones. Glad to see this Allen thing has legs. It’s worse than the Lott remark, imo, and he needs to go down.
Oh, and ask Lieberman what his staff means by this:
The man’s batshit crazy. He’s using the southern strategy in CT.
We lurves us our OS in the mornin’.
Crikey, can’t believe I left this one from the Most Emailed list off my NYT menu ^ (didn’t mean to). Link looks suspicious in Preview, but I’ve redone it from scratch 3 times now and still can’t get it looking right … now to see what happens “in public.”
Just finished sending this to CNN wrt to Carol Costello’s actually using, and joking about the word “macaca” on their newscast this morning:
“At approximately 6:45 AM CDT today (8/16/06), Carol Costello made a joke about, and used the racially offensive slur “macaca” after a piece on Sen. George Allen’s use of that very same racial slur reported by Andrea Koppel.
Just how in the world can this woman think that making a joke of the word “macaca” and using that word is even close to appropriate behaviour, much less as a highly visible news person on a nationally-telecast program watched by millions of Americans?
Just what passes for brains with this person? Would she still think it’s funny and appropriate to use and joke about the N-word?
And who wants to bet that CNN management doesn’t get it either?
Or is joking about, and actually using a racial slur by CNN news people an acceptable part of CNN corporate policy?
CNN needs to APOLOGIZE immediately and officially by stating in no uncertain terms that this type of behaviour is NOT tolerated!!!
Making “jokes” about, and using that very same racial slur is NOT FUNNY!!!
This APOLOGY needs to be made “LIVE” on your programs so that the same people who were offended by this idiot’s remark can see and hear her APOLOGIZE!!!”
Unfortunately the racist problem is no longer a north-south thing, truth is, it never was that simple. And there is no time better than the present to identify and remove the pols who allow this behaviour room in their words and actions. The situation here in the US is so critically close to complete meltdown, and identifying who is on what side of the river has never been more important. We are at (what time must prove to have been) a total turning point for the survival of the tenets of the founding of this nation. The wrongheaded must be removed.
Well, when I read
“two of the more divisive and problematic figures in the Democratic Party,”
I think
Joe Lieberman and Dan Gerstein.
(Ah, and that silly Preview was just pulling my leg-petal, I see.)
ironranger, I do remember that. Yeeeeuuucchhhh.
Imus now replays Jon Stewart’s “news” on George Allen and the M-word. And isn’t that what’s being danced around…this was the Euro/African version of the N-word. Much mockery of Allen. Bernie’s stock “it was a slip…” Yeah, Bernie. Slip of the mask, I’d say. “It was a mistake,” Bernie adds. You got that right, snarks Imus.
PS, I don’t know how you can stand to watch those guys. Hats off to you for valor-beyond-the-call.
I had never heard the word macaca before & Snow & other repub using the tarbaby word. It’s very telling how easily those words just casually come out of their mouths. I can only conclude that this is normal conversation with their “peers”.
hey, lotus, I understand what you’re saying. I tune out the bs. [like the staged quarrel between the Imuses right now…] I write ‘em when I’ve got a beef…like the brief tossaway this morning about retards. But also write ‘em when they do more serious news-eliciting than the WH Press Corps….
Like I commented last night, that show’s a bellweather…much more than the gasbag weekend shows, which are too artificial, too FAQ-redundant between the shows, too set-up by set-up events.
And I’m a sucker for cowboys.
Wul lotus, we all do for each other here at the lake. I can’t do newspapers, but you do the times and the post. We can’t do the TV guys, but others can. I can listen a little to Glenn Beck after I listen to the Faux spin at tope of the hour headlines, while others can’t stomach him at all. Then we all report to Kos…………
And, finally, an apology isn’t particularly sincere when it is phrased, “If I offended, I apologize.” What that is saying is, I don’t see anything wrong with what I said – too bad you do.”
Absolutely, Anne. An apology would go: “I should never have said that. I do apologize.”
Woohoo, zoom over to http://www.nytimes.com right now and check out the top-of-the-page photo!
OK, here is my morning stratagerg thought –
Can someone get Lieberman on record regarding his colleague’s remarks? It would either 1) expose him; or 2) drive a fat wedge between him and his campaign’s use of race.
By the way, I am now so very tired of the complaints about Dark Blacks’ Lieberman/Clinton political image. I would like to hear from the righties exactly how that image is racist. Because, at this pointm,m and after the Sharpton/Jackson comments, it seems that the political point being made is increasing….
By the way, what does Al S. think about Lieberman portraying him as the most divisive figure in the Democratic party?
by “his colleague” I mean, get Lieberman to comment on Allen’s remarks.

Dr. Sinker 4:21 am = concern troll
Aiding and abetting racism is still racism.
Democratic talking point: WE CLEAN OUR OWN DEMOCRATIC HOUSE; WE’LL CLEAN THE HOUSE AND SENATE. (And that’s why Republicans are badmouthing us, out of sheer terror.)
The Democratic Party does not tolerate racism in our ranks; we clean house when we find racism, among other things. Joe Lieberman is an example of “house cleaning”. He was a dust bunny that deserved to be swept out of office for failing to support Democratic values when it counted most, and his behavior since being swept out in the primary makes it all too clear this house cleaning was long overdue.
Joe has used dog whistle politics of racism, and rejected American democratic (little d) processes.
Get thee gone, dust bunny, into the dust bin of irrelevance.
And get thee gone, concern trolls. You are part of the problem or part of the solution. Pick it and quit blaming us.

Yeah, I love it – Bush’s Brain, Part Two. Hahaaaa.
Woowhee!! finally made it through what thread I missed last night.
prostratedragon’s rant at 1:32 am is worthy of an FDL front page. Breathtaking.
If Ann Coulter’s father wasn’t a rich Conn. lawyer, she wouldn’t be qualified for any job that doesn’t require wearing knee pads.
Slate asks: Is george allen too Stupid to be President?
I didn’t think intelligence was a requirement for the job anymore.
I don’t think that Allen is as stoopid as dubya, but his racism is not so deftly hidden as w.’s perhaps cause he doesn’t have Rove (yet). They do both have a penchant for drink and power. They are both sons of privilege.
They are both pretend cowboys. They both seem to have a tendency to call people by nicknames instead of their given names. They are both authoritarian yet have problems with authority figures themselves. The similarities are seemingly endless…
And don’t forget they hate the poor. Even the ones with white skin.
Not for nothing but the Democratic Party has it’s own skeletons in the closet regarding race relations in this country. Remember the term “Dixiecrats”? Much of what the KKK was doing in the 30’s and 40’s can be linked to Southern Democrats so to try and argue that the GOP is the only party with this historical monkey on their back is just incorrect and dishonest. I’m all for the Democrats spanking the GOP in November but let’s not start revising history in order to make our case.
MoMo, you’ve got that right, they hate anyone who cannot live within the walls of their gated communities acquired by wealth.
They would prefer to keep them so downtrodden and busy trying to stay alive that the poor will not darken their doorsteps.
The neo-cons did get something right, though, in an unintentional way: Medicare D and our floundering healthcare system, while paying back their Big Pharma supporters, have opened the eyes of folks who might have been wealthier under other circumstances but are now strapped.
My in-laws, for example. They may never vote for a Dem, but they are seriously reconsidering voting for any of today’s Republicans.
Rich Woods — I was TOO young to vote for a Dixiecrat. I remember them, but they serve as a reminder about why today’s netroots progressives need to f*cking clean the Democratic house.
You want us to own the history? Fine. I do, and I deplore it, being a person of mixed race and ethnicity.
But you’d better be part of the solution yourself. Your comments border on Republican dolchstosse. Got any progressive comments?
Rich 297–the Democrats had problems 70 years ago. The Republicans had them 70 hours ago.
In the field I work in, a factor of 8760 is considered an overwhelming difference, not “rewriting history”.

Mmmmm . . . not quite. George Bush is not a racist, but a classist — his purpose in life is to grease the rich and powerful, while sticking it to everyone else. GWB is a sadistic con artist — there is nothing he loves more than play acting the good buddy backslapper, while he’s really getting away with a back stab. He is the classic model of a fraternity fascist.
George Felix Allen Junior — he is a racist, through and through. His slur reveals that he learned it at his mother’s knee, which means it is impossible to unlearn — just as GWB can never unlearn the viciousness his mother taught him.
George Felix Allen is a Neo-Klansman, and a hard core rascist through and through — the Kiss Float for him might need to go the pointy hat and white sheet route.
The other day Digby reminded us of the true meaning of “Southern Strategy” :
It’s right out of the Lee Atwater playbook (George Allen’s “macaca” comment), at whose knee Mary Matalin, Allen’s biggest supporter, studied. Bob Herbert reported in the October 6, 2005 edition of the New York Times of a 1981 interview with Lee Atwater in which he explains the GOP’s Southern Strategy:
You start out in 1954 by saying, ”Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say ”nigger” – that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.
And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I’m not saying that. But I’m saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me – because obviously sitting around saying, ”We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than ”Nigger, nigger.”
Whatever racism problem the Democratic Party had in the past, the Republican Party embraced the Dixiecrats. Nixon and the Southern Strategy? It was all about covert and overt welcome mats for the most racist elements in American Society.
The Democratic Progressives rejected racism, while the Rebublican Conservatives embraced racism — to the everlasting shame of those who believe in Abraham Lincoln. Trent Lott had been a Dixiecrat racist, and he joined the exodus to the GOP with his fellow racists.
And that — is the historic context of this debate.
ck– I do see your pov, but I have come to believe that dubya attempts to shield himself from charges of racism by appointing minorities to positions of “power” and then controlling them to toe the line drawn by Cheney et al.
Powell, Rice, Gonzales, etc. He acts as though he is the proud patriarch of all of these carefully contrived appointments, but I can’t shake the feeling that he is snickering in his sleeve while his lip trembles and fake tears comes to his eyes as he touts their incredible rise from impossible circumstances.
Smells Rovian.
For George Allen racism is really a kind of fashion statement. It belongs to the same species of contrivance and adolescent yearning as Tucker Carlson’s faux 1920’s bowtieishness. It is rootless fashion reactionary-ism that can be turned on or off depending on the context. He probably has no problem with certain minorities in positions of power, especially if it is politically expedient. This is the difference between southerners who are really part of a Southern tradition (the good, bad and really ugly) and Sun Belt suburbanites who know what they know about racism, Jim Crow and lynching from television. So it is sterilized and fairly meaningless. It is part of the Son of Jim Crow New South where physical distance from the element, black or Hispanic, replaces segregation and neoliberalism and welfare reform serves to cut them off from your tax money. To be fair this is a feature of the entire US.

I think George Felix Allen’s racism is the real deal. He is a faux Southerner, but he was into the whole confederate-flag-as-a-racist-symbol thing when he was in high school, and he displayed a hangman’s noose as signal of his pro-lynching cred.
Both George Walker Bush and George Felix Allen are haters — but GWB hates everything not of his class, while GFA hates everyone not of his race.
ck,
Yes, these things are true, but think of him as a teenager who dabbles in the occult. My family and friends in Virginia circulate in Allen’s orbit. The man has no character. He has no qualities. None. His prejudices are pedestrian. He is post-literate. And he is as dumb as a bucket of rocks. He is potentially dumber than Shrub, who at least has the savvy and malice (always useful) of a rich boy from a national family.
Does this harm people? Yes. And the more power this simpleton is given the more harm. But he is not a hardened racist. I think he has hardened-racist envy and finds it easy to use a few symbols to get his populist message across. I assure you that George Allen has nothing to do with the folks in the hinterland who may be the traditional racists except at election time. Like Shrub, he has contempt for the weak. Unlike Shrub, he expresses his sin by taking on a caricature of Southern Culture.
The most horribly racist thing Republicans have done, in my opinion, was to replace an intellectual heavyweight like Thurgood Marshall with He Who Does Not Speak. Clarence Thomas is such a disgrace to the Court for so many reasons. I can’t remember the particular opinion, but my friend in lawschool was telling me that Thomas ended a one page coinciding opinion with something along the lines of the following: “I futhermore agree with what Justice Scalia has to say in his opinion.”
If we want an honestly African American Justice, then we need to another black man (WOMAN!) on the bench. Because Thomas brings as much credibility and purpose to the Court as The Hoff does to America’s Got Talent.
