In my whole life, I did not anticipate that the United States Ambassador to the United Nations — a person who represents our nation’s image and values and philosophy to the entire world – would be so desperate for attention and fawning adulation, that he would consent to a one-hour-long interview with questions like this: (via TBogg)
Pamela: So much faith in the Lebanese government I do not understand. A puppet of Syria, who is a puppet of Iran. Iran is Barzini here. You see the Godfather? Okay? So a question about it. Who props up that government? I mean if the Israeli, if the IDF, which is, although when I was in Israel, I gotta tell you, a bunch of baby-faced kids. I know they’re always portrayed in the media with Darth Vader helmets and the Israeli war machine. I’m telling you, the cutest kids ever. But if they couldn’t contain, and I think there’s an element of that that no one really wants to talk about. I wonder how much the US government was surprised that Israel didn’t go in, bing-bang-boom, and knock these suckers out. Forget about Israel for a second, even though it’s difficult for me, right and wrong, good and evil, and all that. Let’s discuss real politics, shall we? It’s in America’s best interest that Hezbollah be eliminated. I mean this is not just Israel’s problem. You know who Hezbollah is. You know where they are. Let’s discuss real politics, shall we? It’s in America’s best interest that Hezbollah be eliminated. I mean this is not just Israel’s problem. You know who Hezbollah is. You know where they are. So I think there was an element of surprise. Do I think it’s Olmert’s weakness? I do. Did I campaign wildly for Bibi? I did. Do I have a vote? I don’t. So I think Israel also, you know it’s interesting, when I was in Israel, you could see the country was in short of like a shock, like a 9/11 shock. Here they had banked so much on land for peace and peace, even this sh–, even a bad peace, sorry about that, John, is better than a good war, so to speak, although I don’t subscribe to that. I understand that the current, modern civilization does, to which they’re going to pay dearly, but that’s besides the point. …
It keeps on going, and going and going, but my eyes started to bleed and my brain was screaming for mercy. So I had to cut the quote off there. TBogg, a giant among men, has the entire question — and remember, it’s only ONE question, out of a whole passel of them — for your reading…erm…what’s the polar opposite of pleasure?
Glenn asks some very good questions this morning about this interview, and a number of others that the Administration has granted to partisan hacks only: why is it that the Administration consistently gets a pass for doing interviews with partisan shills who spew forth some of the most vile and disgusting speech on a regular basis? Without anyone in the "media" publicly holding the Administration accountable for this?
I’d like to know the answer to that myself — and why people who are supposed to be media watchdogs like Howard Kurtz, have Charles Johnson of LGF on the show as a legitimate representative of "conservative values," as Kurtz did yesterday on CNN. (And, may I say, kudos to Arianna for getting her points across so well yesterday.)
(Maybe it’s just because I’m on my first cuppa coffee, but this poster cracked me up this morning — Mr. ReddHedd sent me the link to this website in an e-mail, and I’ve been giggling ever since. And this particular poster was too perfect for the wingnutty idiocy of the day, so I give huge thanks to the nerdy genius that is Star Trek Inspirational Posters. Live long and prosper, funny poster creator.)

Logic in this country is dying a slow, painful death, and I’m rather P.O.ed about it.
I think I would have made a great Vulcan, except for the funny haircuts. That wouldn’t really have worked well for me.
Never underestimate the value of a moustache ride.
What? I should leave? Let me just get my coat.
Tommy Yum at 3 — I am never going to forgive you for inserting that image into my weary brain. Blergh. *g*
That non-question sounds like the homily at a wedding I went to. On and on and on …. One of the other guests said afterward that the guy needed an editor.
PJ Evans at 5 – I think TBogg deserves a medal for reading the entire interview. Really.
That Bolton sat down with this twit tells you everything you need to know about our diplomatic (cough, cough) operations. Then again Condi can be seen most nights actually talking to Hannity, Gibson, O’Reilly and the rest of the riff-raff on Fox. Next we’ll have Neal Boortz and Michael Savage getting a sit with Dubya to explore the hygiene habits of those ”filthy Arabs”.
After putting the band-aids on my jaw (ceramic floor) all I could think was, ”Pamela Anderson?”
I mean if the Israeli, if the IDF, which is, although when I was in Israel, I gotta tell you, a bunch of baby-faced kids. I know they’re always portrayed in the media with Darth Vader helmets and the Israeli war machine.
Sorry for the language, but this bitch is unhinged. The US media coverage of Israel is nothing but 100% positive. Shit, Israel gets better coverage by our media than our own country.

They get a pass because the media elite live and work in a bubble. They have their tropes, their storylines, and everyone they meet lives in that same bubble, repeats those same storylines. People like you and me just aren’t getting through.

Christy — what’s the problem. Pammy’s question(s) seem transparently clear:
“Why do you allow reality to intrude on my brain? Why isn’t someone shielding me from this? Why is everyone acting as though life is complicated? I can’t stand it! Help!”
the public relations narrowcasting of team bush is consistent with how they limit their foreign intelligence sources to their readings in the old & new testaments together with a child’s guide to the crusades
OMFG.
You’re not kidding, are you, Christy. Bolton actually did this — actually sat there for this “interview” — didn’t he.

Ali G’s questions are more pithy, if not more intelligent …
This woman is clearly a nut.
But take Cheney’s comments from last week, and imagine him muttering them in a basement, tuning his shortwave and surrounded by empty Blatz cans. Nothing would be out of place.
These people are why they invented basements.
That quote sounded like something from SNL or Mad TV…
Increasingly, the president is traveling without a press corps, attending events that are closed to the media, which decreases opportunities for questions.
Increasingly, what media do get face time or extended time to interview are there only for window-dressing: the goal is to get out the administration’s message in a way that some segment of the population that it is not actually propaganda – even though it clearly is.
It would not surprise me in the least if, in addition to the Office of Lessons Learned, we also have a shadow Ministry of Propaganda, although it probably has a more innocuous title.
The big question is, is it working? Is the message resonating? There are some for whom nothing has changed – they are in it up to their Kool-Aid tinged eyeballs.
What amazes me is that of all the tactics the administration has tried over the last 6 years, truth seems to not even be on the list, anywhere. I’m not asking for state secrets, just the simple truths – like our policy in Iraq isn’t working. Like those responsible for the violence in Iraq are not terrorists. Like the world is not safer for our policy decisions. Like global warming is real. Like raising the minimum wage does not hurt job creation or the economy. Like the people who want our troops to come home do not hate either the troops or America. Like you can criticize a policy and still be strong on security issues.
Truths the American people can see for themselves, in greater numbers, in spite of the fear-mongering and finger-pointing.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 24
I understood the Sinatra thing to mean that, in Pammy’s view, ole Blue Eyes would never admit moral ambiguity (Pammy must have boycotted Manchurian Candidate – cause someone said it was just a Chinese commie propaganda flick).

Hey cbl, Mary, the French were at one point considering indictments against Cheney in the Nigerian fraud, going back to 2003.
Check the Halliburton Watch timeline for more, although they don’t say much about the potential for indictments.
Notice how this was NOT an issue during the 2004 election…
The U.S. military is in a battle with the American war-mongers.
Just yesterday U.S. ambassador and Neo-con/PNAC tool Zal Khalilzad was carrying the neo-con water claiming that Iran was in effect causing serious problems within Iraq and was planning terror attacks in Iraq against the U.S.
(Snip)
“Caldwell’s assertion came on the heels of allegations by U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who told The New York Times that Iran was encouraging Shiite militias to step up attacks on U.S. forces in retaliation for the Israeli assault on Hezbollah in Lebanon. The Shiite Hezbollah is backed by Iran.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200…../iraq_iran
So now a general has to step in and ratchet the rhetoric down. For the sake of 130,000 U.S. troops who would be ill served by agitating Iran to the point that they comply with the neo-con fantasies and start to really cause problems.
(Snip)
“There is nothing that we definitively have found to say that there are any Iranians operating within the country of Iraq,” Major General William Caldwell, the top U.S. military spokesman in Iraq, told a news conference.

When I commented on Teddy SF’s blog at Harry Reid’s site, I didn’t demand he pull his committee assignments, just that Reid and everybody else lean heard on Lieberman to drop out because he’s destroying the Democratic party’s chances to win in November.

Actually my head nearly exploded reading a piece in the NY Times today:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08…..f=business
Evidently the Business section of the paper has a regular feature titled “Link by Link,” which follows discussion threads on blogs. Today’s feature followed a discussion about Muslims by those who are anxiously awaiting the coming Rapture.
And this follows finishing Michelle Goldberg’s book, Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism. Fundamentalist extremism is truly terrifying.
OT – The White House today refused to announce support the Republican challenger to Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), RAW STORY has learned.

The Brits haven’t even charged anyone yet. My God, if this was an imminent attack and they had the goods, why not “throw the book” at them?

I remember seeing an interview with Bolton on the sidewalk outside the UN, about the time the UN ceasefire was starting to be discussed. The long term prospects for the Lebanon ceasefire remain dubious. Short term, both sides are ready for a respite. Hezbollah has shown it is a disciplined force and will likely honor the ceasefire by and large for the time being. They are already out filling in bomb craters in roads to facilitate the return of civilians eager to get back and see what is left of their homes and their lives. The return of civilians may be one of the principal anchors in maintaining the ceasefire. If Israel stalls on withdrawal or does not resolve the underlying issues of prisoners and the Shaba Farms, it won’t last.
Meanwhile Israelis can come out of their bomb shelters and they will not be eager to return to them. This too is a positive force for keeping the ceasefire intact. Israeli leaders are portraying this all as a great victory in what is likely to be an extended and fairly desperate attempt at CYA.
Everybody has already begun pointing fingers at everyone else. The one aspect of this that I find the funniest is the questioning of the US-Israel relationship. Some are saying that Israel went into Lebanon at America’s behest. That is laughable. The Israeli leadership civilian and military went into Lebanon because they wanted to, because they thought it would be cheap, quick, and easy. In the less than successful aftermath, it suddenly became about us. Believe me if the Israelis had succeeded it would have been all about them and the US would not have rated a footnote.

I am loathe to say it, but the thought has occurred to me that NARAL may not be updating their website because, in their minds, nothing has changed – i.e. Lieberman remains their endorsed candidate regardless of the Democratic primary.
If my speculation above is correct, then NARAL is officially beyond all hope of redemption and must be considered an enemy of the progressive movement and the pro-choice movement on a going-forward basis.
There is no question that the Lamont primary victory is providing invaluable clarity as to who is with the progressives and the Democratic party, and who is against them. We now know a whole hell of a lot more about the DLC, Salazar, etc. And probably NARAL too.
At the very least, in the name of simple factual accuracy, NARAL should replace Lieberman’s party affiliation with (CTFL).
It is the least they could do.

Spot on. Wheat from chaff time.
Seeing Spock and Logic. What drives the Bush base, the 27%? They defy logic. Their politics and votes go against their social and economic self-interest; they and their children are being killed and maimed for no reason. Most of these people are not bad but they are sure screwing up the country.
Someone should call NARAL and ask them whether they are endorsing Lieberman, Lamont, or Schlessinger for Senator in Connecticut.
They need to come out with a definitive answer on this NOW (no pun intendend).

Some have speculated on the Alan Keyes batshit crazy 27%. I think it probably is a little lower than that.
Thanks tommy yum, I have long felt that a Lamont victory in the primary would be worthwhile as a litmus test for politicians and interest groups alike.
The Connecticut election was like pulling a fire alarm in every Democratic politician’s bedroom, forcing them all to run out into the plain public view, along with whomever they were sleeping with behind closed doors.
Accordingly, we need to pay extremely close attention to who gets behind Lamont and supports him, who pays lip service only, and who gives aid and comfort to Lieberman.
With the Connecticut primary behind us, and a Lamont victory in hand, now is the perfect time to identify the friends and enemies of the progressive movement and the Democratic party. Let’s not allow this moment to pass us by without taking full advantage of the information that can be gleaned.
Shez & *ilson — okay, finally went to last thread and read up.

A Lieberman Bait and Switch?
I’ve been thinking about the Republican support for Lieberman, especially the wisdom of it. Whether or not Lieberman will caucus with the Dems or the Pugs should be an issue for them, and while I beleive that he is most likely to join the Pugs, should he win, it is not absolutely certain.
Several scenarios could plqay themselves out:
A) The breakdown for Senate control ends in no majority, 50-48-2. Sanders obviously caucuses with the Dems, making it 50-49-1. Whom does Joe join? He’s already promised to causus with the Dems, but by joining the Pugs he puts them in charge, with all the attendant benefits that might bring. Or Lieberman stays with the Democrats, burnishing his ‘centrist’ role by creating a bipartisan enforcing tie for Senate leadership.
B) The Democrats win a 51-48 majority against the Pugs without Lamont. Frankly, my own handicapping of the race suggests this is impossible, that the Dems will need Lamont to ensure a majority in the Senate, but let’s speculate anyway. Obviously, in this scenario Joe caucuses with the Dems.
C) The Republicans win a 52-47 majority. Joe’s prospects for Pug perks are not as significant in this scenario. They don’t need him to maintain the Senate leadership. From a game theory perspective does Joe gain more from caucusing with the Pugs as a another NE moderate or caucusing with the Dems as a ‘centrist’ they can buy off for support. The latter seems more likely. So Joe ends up caucusing with the Dems again.
All of this leads me to believe that Joe won’t be seen as a reliable Republican by the GOP.
So what do the Republicans do about this situation?
Easy. If Lieberman wins, offer him a cabinet seat. You know he’ll take it. And then Jodi Rell appoints a Republican to take his place.
I believe this is the ultimate end game for the Republicans. Schlesinger can’t win in CT — he’s just too far behind and too problematic as a candidate. As is *any* candidate the Republicans could throw up in his place. The Pugs best bet to retain the Senate leadership is to support Lieberman, then promote him out of the Senate, leaving a Republican governor to select his replacement.
In other words, I suspect the Republican support for Lieberman is even *more* opportunistic than widely believed.
It’s a classic bait and switch: if Joe wins the Pugs could still gain control of the Senate whether or not Joe caususes with the Democrats.
We should probably play this up more in CT, by getting Joe to promise to refuse a cabinet seat if it would throw the Senate control to the Republicans. When he refuses to do so, or hedges, it becomes another issue to derail his prospects.
What do you (all inclusive) think?
.

It would be sweet if HoJo’s signature-gathering operation turns out as competent as his web design team. How pathetic will that be, to have to announce he failed to make the ballot.
But another technical question: Doesn’t a person who runs for office on a party’s ticket have to be a member of that party? And can you be a member of two parties at the same time? He can’t have it both ways: If he is a Democrat, he can’t run as a Connecticut for Lieberman. If he is a Connecticut for Lieberman, he can’t run around saying he is a Democrat.
First, I want all real Democrats and especially elected Democrats to stop referring to HoJo as a Democrat!

NARAL IS STILL ENDORSING LIEBERMAN.
They confirmed to me that they are doing so IN SPITE of Lamont’s win in the primary. There was zero ambiguity. They are supporting LIEBERMAN.
GrandmaJ — No, that’s not the case, need to make that clear.
NetworkSolutions is a domain registrar with HQ here in the U.S.; while they do sell domains, I’m not aware of any nefarious relationship they have with any political party. It is possible that political organizations may buy domains from NetworkSolutions, but I generally see re-sellers handling both domains and hosting services for any Republicans.
Shez, Kurt, *ilson were discussing a donation from an organization with a domain name, VetsForFreedom.org. I went to NetworkSolutions to use a free service they offer called “WhoIs”; anyone can look up ownership details on a domain name or IP address. The WhoIs data reported showed two names in the meta-data (a kind of reference or tagging tool), one of which was Wayne Zirkle.
Searching for information on Wayne Zirkle confirmed that he and the other person mentioned at WhoIs (Owen West) are both high-level members of VFF; the search information also confirmed a link between TownHall, Heritage Foundation and Wayne Zirkle.

GSD@140 I agree that the really hard core that has always been in American society: The Know-Nothings, KKK, Bund etc. are less than 27%. The question is: What drives these people? For the first time their “philosophy” has taken control of the American gov’t and it’s not a sure bet that the Constitution and the Rule of Law can be restored.
egregious,
An epidemic refers to an increase in disease events in a geographic area over that which would be expected. It makes no reference to the vector. The introduction of the West Nile Virus into the US and carried by mosquitoes created an epidemic because expected cases went from zero to whatever they were. Now a certain number of cases have become expected and so there is now no epidemic.
A pandemic like the Bubonic Plague during I believe it was the 14th century was flea borne. A pandemic is marked by a high degree of virulence and a general lack of resistance over a wide geographic area.
LindaR – do you have reason to hope the Lieberman may not have enough signatures – I’ve heard a few stories about this in the past few days, but updates are always appreciated.

*xyz @ 162
a general rule-of-thumb in politics is to get double the required signatures so you’ll end up with enough valid ones. WhinyJoe needs 7500 — he submitted 18,000. It’s likely he’ll be OK — the Lamont organization has long been preparing for a vigorous scrunity of signatures nevertheless !

and your little dog…: “How do we make this known in CT? Is word of mouth the only way?”
Not the only way, but definitely an important way. The issue has no resonance if people aren’t talking about it.
But I was hoping that Jane, and/or others here with connections to the Lamont campaign and the Democratic party could pass it along.
In any event, whether the Pugs plan to offer Lieberman a cabinet seat or not (and they’ve certainly raised the possibility), I think it’s important for the question to be asked and for Joe’s response to be on the record — Will Joe Lieberman not only promise to caucus with the Democrats, but also to turn down any offer of a cabinet seat if it would throw the Senate to Republican control?
I suspect his response will be: “I’ll do whatever is best for the voters of Conecticut and our country.” Or some such hedging response.
I think it’s an issue that could sway fence-sitters who believe it when Joe promises to caucus with the Dems over to Lamont.

Ain’t that great, “still a Democrat”?
JGabriel @ 170
Even if Dems gain control by two or three, losing even one Dem could weaken our ability to block judicial nominees and to prevail on other issues.
Lieberman doesn’t have to throw control of the Senate to the Repugnants to damage the Dem’s cause. Even one more Republican senator would weaken us.
Shez, Kurt — it appears to me that the VRWC is learning just as we are learning; they realized we figured out their architecture while investigating Guckert/Gannon so they’ve changed it.
Where it used to be they used CRC4PR as the lynchpin, they now use Donatelli.
It also tells you something about the DLC. Either they are that close to the VRWC, or they are that STUPID.
There is no way in f*cking hell I would EVER allow Donatelli to touch any of my data if I were in charge of a Dem organization.

Although I have my suspicions about this situation. I know a gentleman who is an analyst that is supposed to be heading to that area of the world. He said that Hamas and other Palestinian organizations typically treat the media well because it’s their only lifeline to the rest of the world. Not so the Israelis; he was more concerned about them because they don’t have any compunction about picking off anyone marked “PRESS”. [Not my opinion, just conveying what this experienced person who has been to that area multiple times said on this topic.]
We should be very concerned not only for the welfare of these folks regardless of their employers, but what kind of manipulation this may be and what ends are sought.
little dog: “Lieberman doesn’t have to throw control of the Senate to the Repugnants to damage the Dem’s cause. Even one more Republican senator would weaken us.”
That’s not so much the issue. The Republicans will definitely be losing Senate seats this election. The big issue is who will get Senate control.
My own guesstimates show anywhere from a 52-48 lead for the Pugs, to a 51-49 lead for the Democrats. A tie is a very real possibility.
(The House won’t be quite as close. The Republicans retain a small edge, but given voter sentiment are really unlikely to maintain their majority. Right now, I’m predicting a range from Democrats 222-213 to Republicans 220-215, with Dems the likely winners in the House.)
