Here’s the Sunday Talking Head Show line-up. Read it and weep:
ABC’s "This Week": Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff; Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and John McCain, R-Ariz.; Cuban-American singer Jon Secada.
CBS’ "Face the Nation": Chertoff; Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., and Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif.; Connecticut Democratic Senate nominee Ned Lamont.
NBC’s "Meet the Press": Chertoff; Sept. 11 Commission chairman Thomas Kean and vice chairman Lee Hamilton; Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean and Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman.
CNN’s "Late Edition": Chertoff; Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Chuck Hagel, R-Neb.; retired Army Gen. George Joulwan; Vali Nasr, professor at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School; Lebanese special envoy Nouhad Mahmoud; former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.
"Fox News Sunday": Chertoff; Lamont; Rep. Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich.
Gee, does it seem like today’s topic will be terrorist threats and how to politicize them, or is it just me? I’ll be shocked if Russert asks Ken Mehlman about the AFP article from earlier in the week and the "This will play well this close to 9/11" sentiment expressed therein by a White House staffer — but I’d sure love to see someone bring it up.
Today’s photo is of a Baltimore Oriole. They are such gorgeous birds, but I never seem to get any on my feeders. Perhaps I’m feeding the wrong food to attract them, or maybe our house is just in a bad location for orioles.
Either way, I thought this photo was gorgeous and I hope everyone enjoys it.
We’re having our house painted at the moment, and the birds are none too pleased with the disruption near their feeders. I’ve been getting some serious feedback from the cardinals and chickadees, and the chipmunk who has all but moved in was seriously p.o.’d today when his cheek stuffing got interrupted by the movement of ladders. Personally, I think I may be spoiling all the critters a bit too much — so maybe this is a good thing for all of us.
My flowers are hanging in there, even with the heat wave we had the last few weeks, but we sure could use some rain. The good news is that I have a volunteer cucumber plant that came up in last year’s patch, and we’ve got several little cucumbers that have set on nicely. Woo hoo! Tzatziki, here I come. How are things growing and thriving at your house? Any new projects? Do tell…

I’ve been thinkin’ all week that all of the talk about the great anti-terror work the Bushies are doing was in anticipation of getting creamed by Kean and Hamilton on MTP.
Today’s photo is of a Baltimore Oriole. They are such gorgeous birds, but I never seem to get any on my feeders. Perhaps I’m feeding the wrong food to attract them, or maybe our house is just in a bad location for orioles.

By rushing the Brits to make arrests, they tied the Lamont win to terrorism and knocked the story off the Sunday shows.
Their mistake was thinking that gave them some control over the onrushing tide.
good puppy news — at the end of May, MommyDog had six pups. Five have new homes but the runt was touch-and-go. It seemed to be wasting away — I bought an expensive bottle of Pedialyte which stabilized the pup. From wikipedia, I found the formula for cheap, homemade pedialyte (salt and sugar in water) and it worked. The lil critter is now integrated with the big dogs and is eating & playing well. I already have “Evo” and “Hugo”, the bebecito is called “Fidelito”…

Morning, all. I am watching Fox News Sunday just for Ned. I hope he appreciates the sacrifice. Chris Wallace is hosting, which means the questions will look less blatantly biased, emphasis on the “look.” However, Ned will have to respond to this kind of stuff as the campaign proceeds, and after watching him convert Tweety, I have every confidence in him. Of course, Tweety was already anti-Lieberman, but he wound up pro-Ned. Unfortunately, until he comes on, I have to watch Chertoff. Yuck.
Jane, you funny.
Byron Calame reports in today’s NYTimes that Bill Keller et al did in fact hold the NSA story in advance of the 2004 election. Good on him for following up and admitting it, but it raises the hell out of my blood pressure.
We’re on vacation. Husband is at the blues fest in Wheeling, and I’m visiting a college friend in Pittsburgh, catching up and cooking and eating great fresh food. The weather here this morning is so glorious — cool and clear and crisp and evocative of September — perfect after the horrid humid heat of our Virginia summer (not its best season, to say the least). September has always been such a hopeful time of year, full of new beginnings — and I can’t wait for the fall to reveal itself.
I too believe in tommy’s onrushing tide. I hope in Virginia it will engulf George Allen. It’s an uphill struggle, and I hope the firepups will give some attention to it in the weeks to come. Go, Jim Webb!

my doggies are all PitMixes — no papers but they look like Pits. They are all aggressively defensive and constantly inquisitive. The other day something came up and I was hurriedly trying to get ready to leave the house (assembling photo equipment and dressing). Hee hee, Jane I didn’t realize you were serious. Rest and enjoy.

Thought I might delurk for a moment. (Who came up with that term, anyway, making a hundred thousand readers sound like stalkers?) The NYTimes Week in Review has a decent story about the Lamont primary as an antiwar campaign and gives what I think is a fairly sane description of the bloggers’ role in movement politics. It even quotes directly, if minusculey (is that a word?), from GTC.

Better than BoBo’s little diatribe on incivility in the blogosphere. To quote The Daily Howler:
I remember when I used to read newspapers for information. Now I check to see how bad the spin is and which direction it’s moving. I know people view the Democrats in Congress as ineffectual. Yet the folks who represent me in Congress (Frank, Kennedy, and Kerry) give lots of impassioned speeches on the floor to any who can spend their days watching CSpan. You should have heard Barney Frank demolish the minimum wage bill that the Repugs had attached billionaire tax relief to: all in 90 seconds and with a lisp. (I love that lisp.)
So as I sit on my stoop [Brookline style], I wonder why can’t the Democratic leaders put together a couple of working groups that would show voters what they’ll get when the Democrats take over office in November. Not just accountability and subpoenas (please, please), but a working plan for putting New Orleans back together and one on homeland security, with budgets and all. I’d even say one on the Iraq war, though they’d need to have the presidency to put that into effect. Could you image the array of generals they could call upon for that?
Anyway, got to go strip a radiator. That’s my project for the day. Some lame brain painted our steam radiators with latex paint, on top of the original enamel. Genius.

Welcome mh. You’re not a lurker anymore.
Ned on and smiling.
In the early spring, orioles are attracted to carbs like oranges and grape jelly. Then they turn to protein mode when nesting, ie live mealworms. Live mealworms are a hassle to feed, but once the backyard birdies learn what and where they are, you will get species you usually don’t attract to seed feeders. You can order mealworms by the thousands via the web. Family members have to agree to not be grossed out by having them in the fridge. Some folks even raise their own! Gotta love the birdies to that far.
after all the discussions about New Orleans food, I’m settling down with a large plate of Zatarains red beans and rice with lil pieces of Andouille sausage — a heavy breakfast !

When the weather was unbearably hot two weeks ago, my neighbors and I kept at our yard work, hating it all the while. Now that it turns cooler, we’re on our porches enjoying the benefits of our labors.

GREAT pic on top of Kos right now. It has it all including the Kiss float.
Morning Redd & Jane; let’s see; I’m watching Lee Hamilton talk on MTP right now – he’s “still nervous”…he’s a bit of a doofus; Thomas Kean is “not surprised”…David Gregory interviewing instead of Timmeh; a brief relief from punkin head. Chertoff was on – and tanned and creepy.
As to what’s going in real life – I’m getting ready to take my lab, lab/greyhound mix, springer/border collie mix (Gracie, Brewster & Bailey) to the dog park. Its 6 o’yawn here in Seattle, so its perfect to take the pooches to their favorite spot. My son’s Boxer, Sugar is on vacation (her people are in Oregon for a wedding) so I’ve got 4 (!) this weekend. But they are good buds and are beginning the happy prance to get those collars & leashes on to get to the favorite place.
As for birds, I have ravenous finches at my feeder – but they are so cute and busy, its just fun to watch and enjoy. I’ve got a water bowl for them which is right outside my front door where I can watch them – and the screen door keeps the dogs inside, just watching the action out of their touch. We’ll hit 80 today; that’s a nice summer day. My kind of summer. Well, we’re off! Thank goodness for DVR – I’m going to watch Lamont & Dean that way. Cheers all.

Near end they showed a nice graphic with Harvard, Yale, began work as a —? and married with three children. The ivy league stuff might not work with the broader audience but it’s great in N. England. Married w 3 children, plus how reasonable he sounds, takes away from the Lamont as crazy person winger theme.
The graphic they had up before the commercial leading into the segment was really nice. Ned smiling into a cheering crowd.

Drat! I missed most of the Lamont interview because I didn’t know what channel FOX was on.
I only caught the last minute or two but what I saw I liked. Ned didn’t get trapped by the way that FOX asked their questions. He redefined the questions into the way he liked them and then he answered. Awesome job by Ned.

I wonder how many thousand dollar bills president cheney slipped Hamilton and Kean. Disgusting shameless whores.
They are actually talking about the invasions being counterproductive to fighting terrorism. Will, Martha Raditz and Bob Riesch (sp?) all agreeing.
Christy,
I’ve been mostly lurking lately — just don’t really have much to add to the marvelous and thoroughly enjoyable conversations. But I do have a bird story I’d love to share.
We were taking down some overgrown honeysuckle and an old, diseased grey dogwood last week. I was in charge of lopping off branches while my husband chainsawed and ground them up, and there was a mockingbird singing and chattering maybe 20 ft. away from me. It was really very pleasant until I’d gotten maybe 2/3 through the dogwood and the mockingbird started doing some serious — and I mean SERIOUS — alarm calls.
So I put down the loppers and peered into the bush — and there was a shaking, terrified juvenile wood thrush! We’ve only had them for a couple of years and unfortunately, a week or so before this, both parents got hit by cars (they tend to walk or skitter rather than fly). We left the premises, of course, and when we got back later, it was gone.
Quite the comparison to, oh, say, Lebanon.
The world’s chubbiest squirrel is now raiding my bird feeder. I don’t know if he’s just overeating or if there is going to be a horrible winter and he’s just stocking up. Maybe it’s just easy to find food…
Titanyum @ 61
yeah, DrZ, you don’t live in San Francisco, by any chance. let the rapping begin, or maybe Beastie Boys………
Orioles are rare in our neck of the woods, too, but we have a lovely family of Black-Headed Grosbeaks that are equally brilliant in color if not song. I, too, am spoiling the wildlife, but it tickles me to see a young deer at the bird feeders.
The agastache (hyssop) are in full bloom and is bringing numerous different hummingbirds–no need for artificial feeders. All the drought tolerant plants are blooming and thriving despite recent sweltering weather. After three years of killing lawn, hauling in bark and planting those drought-tolerant plants, our work is paying off. We can save water and we stil have a little spot of beauty.
As for the Sunday shows, I may just catch the roundups later. The guests are all pretty predictable.
sharkbabe – Where in Southern Maryland do you like? I’m up here in Cheverly right now but I was in Lexington Park about 4 years ago when I worked at NAS PAX.

I went to a fundraiser headlined by Congressman Murtha, and attended by Albert Gore, Jim Cooper (my Congressman) among others. Murtha is delightful. When we talked to him at the reception, he focused on us, paid attention to the questions, and answered directly. I asked him if he would be campaigning for Ned Lamont, and he said yes, that he had already been in Connecticut, but apparently Lamont took a short vacation, which the Congressman thought was odd. Everyone was thanking him for standing up for us, against the idiotic policies of the administration, and he talked about the need to elect Democrats to hold the President accountable. In his speech, he pounded on the accountability theme. He finished with this: the nation has a Republican House, a Republican Senate, a Republican Supreme Court, and a Republican President, and they want to blame Jack Murtha for their failures.
Al Gore was at the reception, as were some people from the draft Gore 2008 crowd. We had a word with him, but there were a huge number of his friends there, and we had only a moment.
Jim Cooper is involved with a book on the Federal Budget revised to comply (more or less) with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, at least I think that is what he said, it was noisy. Cooper is an interesting guy. Congressman Murtha referred to him as the intellectual in the Congress. Cooper says that the deficit is much worse than we think, looking at it in standard financial terms, and the Administration is hiding the ball pretty effectively.
The head of the Tennessee Democratic Party, Bob Tuke, is a Viet Nam era Marine, so he and the Congressman have a bond, and our guy is very conscious of the importance of taking care of veterans, so there was a moment of recognition for us veterans, which was nice. The honorees were given portraits done by a local artist I know from other circles, and were a really nice gesture, much better than the usual plaques.
And, we sold out the house!
Kinda looks as if the networks have gotten Ned neatly boxed in to discussing TERRA! TERRA! TERRA! doesn’t it?
Yeah, that’s the ticket. Then turn around and call him a “one issue candidate.” I smell essence-of-rover, paranoid lunatic fringezied that I be…. I guess we should be thankful the intellectual giants of the MSM didn’t invite whineyjoe instead of Ned(!)
I haven’t seen much of Ned yet (please don’t hit me! read on 1st), but EVERYTHING I’ve seen so far shouts out that Ned’s easily up to answering today’s schtickyquestions as well as tomorrow’s, & so on…; I’d say easily 6 yrs-worth and more, actually.
In the 1st few interviews he’s had, Ned not only proved he is extremely knowledgeable and articulate, he also deftly steered discussion topics to whatever he wanted to say and managed to express his thoughts fully and clearly, in spite of the interviewer-interruptus techniques common to the loony fringe MSM.
[YEAH Tweetie! I’m lookin’ right at you!]
Sidelight: I’m still savoring my memory of Tweetie’s eyebrows shooting straight up into his hairline, upon inflicting his 1st interview on Ned! Tweetie was IMPRESSED! Ha ha!

Please, DON’T blame the cats. Blame the owners.
Feral and pet cats, are the most destructive of all the predators on songbirds.
Stalking comes naturally to the cat.
SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SPAY-NEUTER PROGRAM to cut down on the feral population, and try to convince people getting pet kittens to KEEP THEM INDOORS.
Yes. I’m a realist. I know it’s practically impossible to deal with grown cats without letting them outside, IF they’re already used to roaming. Our own cats seem perfectly satisfied with their perches by open windows, and they luxuriate on our screened porch. They do NOT go ‘outside’. But then we’re lucky to be able to provide those perks. I know it’s hard, fellow cat-lovers. However, the threat to wildlife is well-documented.

Thanks to ALL for keeping track of the blow-by-blow today on the talkies. Last couple-a Sundays, I just haven’t been able to stand watching them. But I’m going kinda nuts wanting to see & hear Ned. I know from listening to him in the primary, he’s incredible.
Am looking fwd to seeing more one-on-one interviews of him, and I love reading transcripts of what he says in the discussions. He just does NOT let the nut-squad take over the thread! HAH!
GO NED! ;->
lina @ 120
Thanks lina! But, what’s Durkee’s? (Sorry, been expattied for a long time…)
All these arm chair warriors, Bush, Cheney, Rove, Lieberman and the rest, scurrying from military service during the Vietnam War, with their deferments, reminds of coming into the kitchen in the middle of the night and switching on the light and watching all the roaches running for cover. Disgusting. Actually, come to think of it, I’m not nearly so put-off by cockroaches as I am chicken hawks. If fact, by comparison, I down-right love cockroaches.
Ned Lamont is up, next, on Fox News. It’s 20 minutes into the show with Chris Wallace, for those in other time zones.
Nope – how can I never have heard of it? Solomons is so beautiful though, and delightfully salty. I have entertained many drunks there with my bass guitar over the years…

Berl them taties, skin ‘em or not, mash ‘em or chop ‘em, spoon on the mayo and yellow mustard or Durkee’s (available there?), a hearty app of S&P, and th’ow in plenny finely-chopped-up celery and sweet pickles and red onions too, baby!
All you’ll need else is a big ol’ burger and baked beans and a Dr. Pepper. That was mean, and I take it back.Does Lamont victory enourage terrorests, as JL claims?
A. No. It shows Ct thinks the invasion of I had nothin to do with WOT, it was a distraction, not connection.
A. Cheney complaint was offensive. We need to be focused on internal security, working with allies
A. We took our eye off the ball.
Q. What about NSA/censure issues, Patriot Act? What about UK laws.
A. No, we don’t take away any of the laws, it’s about the Pres who doesn’t follow the laws.
A. Patriot Act should be tightly drawn for civil liberties, but everything

If you want a milder favored potato salad, nix the Durkee’s and just use mayo, dill, salt and pepper, and a whisper of white vinegar.

I surfed the Durkee website, and it sounds just heavenly. Will figure out how to score some, though it may not be in time for my big bag of potatoes!

Bush: Some suggest ‘that the terrorist threat is being used for partisan political advantage’
RAW STORY
Published: Saturday August 12, 200
In his weekly radio address on Saturday, President Bush said that America was safer than it was before 9/11, and denied that the “terrorist threat was being used for partisan political advantage.”
“Because of the measures we’ve taken to protect the American people, our Nation is safer than it was prior to September the 11th,” said Bush. “Still, we must never make the mistake of thinking the danger of terrorism has passed.”
“This week’s experience reminds us of a hard fact: The terrorists have to succeed only once to achieve their goal of mass murder, while we have to succeed every time to stop them,” Bush said.
“Unfortunately, some have suggested recently that the terrorist threat is being used for partisan political advantage,” Bush added. “We can have legitimate disagreements about the best way to fight the terrorists, yet there should be no disagreement about the dangers we face.”
Democrats had complained about recent statements made by Vice President Dick Cheney and a fund-raising letter for the Republican National Committee.
“Democrats assailed the Republicans Friday for e-mailing a fundraising appeal mentioning the war on terror hours after British authorities disclosed they had disrupted a plot to blow up aircraft headed to the United States,” reported the Associated Press. “The RNC blamed a low-level staffer for distributing the fundraising appeal, which the party said had been scheduled for release before news of the plot broke.”
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid released a statement on Friday condemning Cheney for saying that Sen. Joe Lieberman’s loss in Connecticut’s Democratic primary could embolden “the al Qaeda types.”
“Once again, GOP (Republican) leaders are using terrorism and our national security as a political wedge issue,” Reid wrote. “It is disgusting — but not surprising.”
“Even more disgraceful is that when Cheney made those comments, he had been briefed on the Britain terror plot,” Reid continued. “There are simply no boundaries for these people.”
The White House countered that Cheney was unaware of any imminent arrests when he spoke about Lieberman’s loss.
“White House spokesman Tony Snow said Cheney had been briefed last weekend on the British threat but did not know the arrests were imminent when he spoke and that he was simply reacting to the outcome of the Connecticut primary,” reported Reuters.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released a statement on Saturday which also accused the vice president and other Republicans of “politicizing” the war on terror.
“Mr. Cheney’s inflammatory comments about Democrats and the war on terror are beneath the dignity of the office of the Vice President and are a disservice to the safety of American people,” wrote Pelosi.
“Our first responsibility as elected officials is the security of the American people,” Pelosi continued. “Partisan politicking during this critical time undermines this obligation and Republican scare tactics fail to make America safer.”

When I was clearing out a small dead tree in the yard a couple of weeks ago, I came out to the curb and startled what I’m pretty sure was a wren that was perched on the bundle of brush. I got to get a pretty close look at him as he flew to a nearby bush and scolded me quite a bit. I know there are wrens in the area, but I hadn’t seen on in the yard before. I may put up a wren house (I got one for my parents a few years ago.)
I’ve seen a Baltimore Oriole in the wild once. They are quite spectacular!

I have a ‘recipe’ for heart stoppin’ vein cloggin’ ‘tato salad for ya. sorry no measurements, I usually don’t cook that way.
Boil new/redskin ‘tatos until tender and rinse w/ cold water and lightly salt.
-optional-
cube bacon and cook, cube kielbasa and cook that in bacon fat until caramelized. mmmmmm…. bacon…..
-end optional-
in measuring cup, pour some cider vinegar (1 cup or more?) and add sugar/splenda until you get the desired amount of sweet in the sweet-n-sour. add some of the bacon fat to the mix. pull some of the cooked ‘tato cubes, pull off skin and mash roughlt w/ fork, add to mix. Use hand blender on the mix until sauce looks creamy, add more potato to make it slightly thick.
In large bowl, combine potatoes, one half to one whole diced red onion, a bunch of diced parsley (the krinkly type), bacon and keilbasa. Pour sauce on and mix. add a little black pepper.

just back from vacation. in a post on an earlier thread, said i came through customs in Heathrow mere hours before the big T alert and with a party of 50 (teenage boys soccer team and parents) it was a breeze. we had mucho bottles of various liquids and there was NO comment made- no agent or law officer seemed to have elevated curiosity in the slightest, there or at LAX when we arrived. when i fly these days, i always half expect to be pulled aside in retribution for my anti-war activities, but this time it was actually almost like the old days, very relaxed.
on early sunday mornings like this, its so cosy here at fdl – also like the (less) old days, with all the old-timers and all. sweet!
medaka — got a recipe for you, but it’s to-taste, I always make it differently each time.
Greek Potato Salad
- mess of boiled potatoes, cut into cubes (if new potatoes with delicate skins, leave the skins on)
- 1/2 to 1 cup fresh parsley, chopped (omit stems, chiffonade coarsely)
- 2-3 scallions, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup lemon juice (more or less, depending on tartness and personal taste)
- 1/3 to 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- salt, pepper to taste
- pinch of dried oregano or dill as desired
Emulsify lemon juice, olive oil, garlic together; stir in scallions, parsley; pour over potatoes and stir to coat potato chunks. Season to taste; allow flavor to mature by refrigerating for a few hours.
Can be served at room temp; good for picnics since it does not require refrigeration like other mayonnaise-based potato salads.
I add oregano or dill depending on what else I’m serving with this salad. Fish = dill; pork = oregano.
Enjoy!
Howie just lied about Jane working for the lamont campaing. Shameless. Arianna is doing a fine job of responding against Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs.
good morning! cnn is discussing the Lamont race.
A winnah, Rayne!
Geographically speaking, I live 10 miles from the Mississippi. One of the best places to eat (that no one knows about) is a bar with a back porch overlooking the river. Really great food and a view to die for. And all you have to do is walk through the gloom, even in broad daylight, past all the bikers, up 2 steps which you cannot see, and out onto the back porch. A well kept secret.
Great fresh squeezed lemonade with a little extra ’something’ (if you get my drift).
Ned Lamont has a rare combination of natural media savvy, earnest intentions, and honest motivations. He makes Lieberman look stale, jaded and tainted.
I first started having concerns about Depleted Uranium when I heard it was being used in the Balkins. It was the one reason why I will never support Wesley Clark. Folks get to a certain level in this country and think it’s ok to commit war crimes. Our soldiers are coming home with high levels of DU and just as with Agent Orange Syndrome in Vietnam, the military is telling the soldiers it’s all in their heads.
I read this Newsday article twice and I am heartbroken about how our troops are being abused.
These Gopers aren’t gonna go quietly because of some steenking election.
Arianna — the lamont victory is incredibly important; Johnson of LGF says voters for JL may be having sticker shock and his support won’t carry over to the general election. what’s funny is, I think he meant the other guy! Oh well?
BarbaraB — did you catch that one?
Joe Lieberman has the biggest taint in Washington.
-GSD
scarecrow @ 176
not BarbaraB but I caught that too. and I think you’re right about him confusing the two. But then again, he’s a blogger. What does he know? ;-)
Arianna nails Chuck Roberts of CNN for his comment about Lamont being the AQ candidate. She doesn’t let Howie wiggle away from that. The lady is good. British education.
cbl @ 157
Actually, I can get lemon grass, and fresh tarragon. Thanks for the hints, cbl.
BTW: is “cbl” your initials, or is it perhaps your name, cybel(le), now vowel-less? Just curious!
You’ve gotta be shitting me. Kurtz asks Charles Johnson, Mr. Little Green Footballs, about the leftie blogosphere, and Johnson clutches his pearls about how mean they were. Howie agrees. Has Howie ever seen what gets posted at LGF and who he links to? And Arianna lets him get away with it, simply pointing out that Lamont voters were moderates. But at least she’s going after Chuck Roberts, and Howie is going ummanaummanaummana. And changing the subject fast.
Woah! Arianna stuck it to CNN for the Lamont/Al Qaeda candidate remark.
lina @ 173
Zackly, lina. And he’s SO not “Hollywood” that he makes everyone instantly comfortable. I’m telling y’all, I think Ned Lamont is Abe Lincoln re-incarnate.
Jane, i haven’t had tv for years — my girlfriend has it but we get together at my place
as to ned’s chances, i still think al gore & hillary will be slow to help ned because he’s way ahead of them on financial credibility — neither party helps small business owners like me, but ned may change that
finally, concerning potato salad, i’m no cook but have never had an edible version outside germany, where i worked for awhile
That Charles Johnson is making me HOMICIDAL. What an ASSHOLE!
What the fuck is his schtick? I’m not familiar with him, so perhaps someone here could give a graf or two of background?
Either way, I’d like to burn his fucking house down.
BarbaraB @ 181

Howie wants to focus on “fake photos,” but Arianna says the issue is accuracy by reporters in general.
Arianna — Reuters is not isolated.
Ya know, we we have our real folks (and not the DINOs) up there against their folks, we do just fine. Whooda thought?
Haven’t seen anyone talk about the NBC story yesterday about BushCo pushing the brits to release the story early. Not even NBC.
funny, but not.

Medaka:
a couple of other spices that go really good with potato salad (depending on what else you’ve decided to put in it): Cilantro (sometimes called Chinese parsley, the Thai’s use it in their soups) and either celery salt or finely chopped celery leaves….. , and if anybody needs to steer clear of real mayo or Durkees you can substitute a really good olive oil (which means you won’t need to put in any pepper)

I know I’m late to the potato sauce conversation, but oh, this brings back my childhood. My mom’s potato salad was the best in the world, and she used Durkee’s Dressing! She died several years ago unexpectedly. If I could make that potato salad now, it would be a such a reminder of her — but it might be unbearable. I never found the recipe anywhere; she must have memorized it, and to my sorrow I never did.
I’m gonna be on the road all day, won’t be able to see any of this
I would love someone to contact Lamont and get him to go on the offensive concerning homeland security
he’s GOT to take on offensives position, he’s GOT to say things like;
“Lieberman enabled the president to initiate an unprovoked aggression in a country that had NO terrorism, and because of those inept decisions now terrorism abounds in Iraq..before those decisions there was NO international terrorism”
and he has to say things like;
“our military is stretched so thin BECAUSE of these IRRESPONSIBLE decisions, that the presidents own generals tell us our battle ready battalions that are not engaged are reduced to zero”
he also HAS to point out that it was the PRESIDENTS own generals that advised AGAINST initiating the unprovoked aggression in Iraq…
our generals in the field advised the president to continue fighting terrorism, and they advised him NOT TO INVADE IRAQ WHICH WILL INCREASE TERRORISTS AND TERRORISM”
those are the things Lamont and ALL democrats have to begin doing
they have to take hilaries lead and EMBARRASS the vice president and his inept performance and decisions concerning our military
and has to DRESS DOWN rumsfeld for being among the worst secretary of defense in not only American history, but possibly the entire history of planet earth.
that’s the only think that’s going to SHUT LIEBERMAN, HANNI TY, RUSH, and CHANEY up.
also, I don’t expect to bre able to watch Ned or feingold so I’m hoping someone can ask c&l to make sure they get those segments to post
enjoy the day firedogs
Medaka: If you like Cajun, I’ve made this many many times. Boil your potatoes. Let cool and dice them. Add onions, hard boiled eggs or whatever you like. Use this recipe instead of Mayo:
GREEN ONION SALAD DRESSING
Makes about 1-1/2 cups
1 egg plus 1 egg yolk
1 1/8 cups vegetable oil
Scant 1/2 cup finely diced green onions
1-1/2 tablespoons Creole or brown mustard
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon Chef Paul Prudhomme’s Vegetable Magic
Whip the egg and egg yolk in a food processor or blender until frothy, about 2 minutes. With the machine on, gradually add the oil in a thin stream. When the mixture is thick and creamy, add the remaining ingredients and blend thoroughly. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Copyright 1996 by Paul Prudhomme
Ned’s mowin’ ‘em down on CBS too! Perfect pitch, as always.
RevDeb, re timing of plots, CNN stream at the bottom cites NBC for US and UK disagreed on timing of plot, or something like that. So it’s out there and will churn.

I was puzzled by the *ilson/lotus exchange, but finally got it. I’m puzzled though why you would say the above. I’m on the west coast and haven’t seen the two Georges yet (Will and Stepha……ous), but assume he was referring to the idea that law enforcement is a more productive approach to “terra” than bombing countries at random as in the Iraq de-Back-le.
We get MTP here at 6:00am our time, so have already seen it. I was disappointed that Mr. Gregory didn’t spend more of the time with Hamilton and Kean discussing some of the claims regarding prevarication during the hearings made in Without Precedent, instead of generalities and the recent “alleged” thwarted “terra” plot.
As usual watching Ken “poop won’t melt in my mouth” Mehlman would have made me lose my breakfast, but thankfully I hadn’t had breakfast yet. I was happy to see that Mr. Meltman seemed pretty stressed out, perhaps he was thinking of the future in which he and the whole Bu$h Crime Family will be little more than bad memories and convicted felons.
I appreciate the previews of This Week in the comments above and can’t wait to see George Will say Kerry was right. It’s still over an hour until that airs out here.
And keep the homicidal thoughts off the comments. Thanks. (Former prosecutors do not like discussions of this sort for obvious reasons, whether or not the writer is joking or trying to make a point by analogy — just say no.)
Christy
Squirrels will store what they can’t eat on the spot. Bottomless pits, they are.
If you want to have a squirrel-proof feeder, we find the hanging tubes, hung high enough and away from their favorite launching-spots, work pretty well for a lot of birds (but probably won’t suit your cardinals, jays, & such).
Ditto, those “squirrel-proof” feeders that have barriers that slide into place if something heavier than a little fella perches/hangs on it. Even with these, you might end up spending $50 for naught, because the feeder may not be adjustable so-as to allow cardinals to use it. Furthermore, some squirrels quickly learn how to play the Cirque-de-Soleil gambit, & distribute their weight so most of it is not resting on the perch/trigger that makes the barrier work. (ain’t nature wunnerful?!)
For the truly stubborn person: If you have a way to suspend a large enough feeder (serving cardinals & the like) from a wire, high enough off the ground to discourage squirrel acrobats from jumping to it (good luck, sigh),
1)feed a strong horizontal wire through sectionS of pvc pipe strung end-to-end to cover the whole wire, or at least a substantial section of the wire to either side of your feeder (empty sewing-thread spools are supposed to work as well). Draw the wire up taut. (The idea is that the squirrel will try to run along the toobz-covered wire but, since the toobz are cut into sections, they’ll twist & rotate in different directions as he runs, tossing said squirrel off’n the contraption.)
2)hang your feeder in the middle of said wire.
If it needs to be so high that you can’t reach it for filling, try to devise some pully-type thingie – but then, the squirrels might just run up the pully string – ;-(
All of this to be done in your spare time…
Of course, if your house has vinyl or aluminum siding & windowframes, I’m gonna have to pull out my [Rosanne Rosanadana routine], “Well then. Never mind!”
HEY! All those big galoots dashed to CT to play with paper mache. Can’t some of ‘em help you rig some thingie, so you can sit back & enjoy a cuppa once in awhile in peace?!
We luv ya gal! You keep us as sane as is humanly possible. Thanks so much! ;->
ccmask, many thanks! That sounds tres FABULOUS! I have a new blender-thingy that I really need to work out more. I love the whatever-ingredients/now-here-is-the-sauce idea, as that’s pretty much how I make things up myself…

Sounds scrumptious, 1Watt. Many thanks!!!!!
CBS Sunday Morning is generally pretty un-political – more like Christy’s bird photos and today’s Potato Salad recipes. This morning though Nancy Giles just delivered a scathing attack on the Dept of Homeland Security, a well deserved scathing attack as far as I’m concerned.
She also suggested that if the Iraq project is so vital to America’s interests and appropriate that Bu$h, Cheney and Rumsfeld should buy some body armor for themselves and get on over there.
medaka — ah. I share the Japanese distaste for cilantro; overwhelmingly green in flavor, like eating freshly mown grass. Seems odd that it’s used in other Asian cultures, though, doesn’t it?
I can’t find my French Potato Salad recipe; it’s another one you might be able to duplicate easily. It’s almost like a Salade Nicoise in a bowl. Heck, you might even try doing just that, serve with a lightly grilled tuna. Instead of a wine vinegar or a white balsamic vinegar, use the more commonly found rice wine vinegar to make a vinaigrette (don’t forget the garlic). Poach some green beans (cut long beans?) until crisp-tender, toss with the potatoes and the vinaigrette, garnish with tomato chunks if you have them.
If I find the actual recipe I’ll email it. Think I’m going to make the Greek Potato Salad tonight myself, have a craving for it now!
Oh, BTW, my Greek sister-in-law prepares hot potatoes to serve with meat by tossing with olive oil, a few squeezes of fresh lemon, a sprinkle of parsley. Not a salad per se, but a refreshing change for American palates.

No, but I was trying to listen and type at the same time. I’m not remotely as good at it as egregious. And I’m not going to rewind and listen to it again. There’s a limit to how much punishment I’m willing to inflict on my molars. Arianna was fine, but Johnson is the King of Trolls. You might try adding some feta to the Greek potato salad.
Just caught up with rebroadcast of lamont with Chris Wallace
VERY impressed. Didn’t let the creep get away with Word One.
Nora — thanks, nice idea, may try that next time I have to serve something for vegetarians in my circle of acquaintances. But I’d have to refrigerate it, might not be the best for picnic-type settings.
Potato salad:
Red potatoes, boiled
Hard-boiled eggs
Chopped onion (I use vidalia onion)
Celery seed (can use dill as well)
Salt & pepper
Mayonnaise
Fresh-squeezed lemon juice
Combine diced potatoes, chopped eggs, & onion. Add celery seed, salt, & pepper to taste. Combine mayo & lemon juice to make a dressing, and blend in. Eat.

A whole ‘nuther approach to potato salad.
Mix your diced, still-warm potatoes with a dressing of:
olive oil
lemon juice
salt and pepper
chopped fresh Italian parsley
chopped green onion or thinly sliced red onion
minced garlic
other minced fresh herbs like dill, tarragon, oregano, thyme or whatever
Steamed green beans (optional)
Tuna packed (packed in olive oil) is another nice addition.
Another nice dressing for potato salad is equal parts buttermilk, white wine vinegar, and mayo. This is good flavioured with with fresh dill, tarragon, parsley, green onions, sliced radishes, and diced celery. And beautiful sprinkled with borage flowers. Can also add sliced, hard-boiled eggs.
I like these recipes because I hate hate hate great glops of mayo on my potato salad. Or on anything else, for that matter.
Hope this stays out of EPU, because these are really tasty salads.

Try oranges cut in half at your feeder.
Here in north Jersey, we have some great big pine trees that attract Baltimore Orioles, especially for nesting. It’s always a treat to spot them.
