(thanks to Dependable Renegade reader Tom A. for this pic)
For the week ending 8/12/06:
Behold, my pretties, the beginning of the end of the Era of the Walk-Talkers. You know who I mean – the criminal bedwetters who believe that greed is a virtue and fear is a "productive emotion." Walk-Talkers insist that those pesky constituents can’t possibly understand the intricacies of governance and articulate their own needs better than those firmly entrenched within the Beltway. Inveterate lie-spinners, they presume that election (preferably their own) equals life tenure. Walk-Talkers are men and women who beat their sunken chests (or artificially inflated ones – yes, you know who I’m talking about) and spew martial codswallop and hyper-moralistic invective, sending soldiers off to die in battle in order to leech their courage. You know these people – they talk the talk, but when it comes to the walking part, they have "other priorities."
The Republicans’ favorite Democrat Joe Lieberman’s loss (because let’s face it, Joe – you lost, failed, did not win, struck out, came in second, coughed up the ball, blew it, tanked, whiffed, got pwn3d) and his arrogant, disdainful dismissal of the will of the people of Connecticut represents, in this closet optimist’s opinion, the impending downfall of the Walk-Talkers. P.T. Barnum and Copernicus were both right, Joe. Contemplate that for a second.
To quote the Rude One:
Lieberman lost because he was wrong, on the war, on indecency, on torture, on Social Security, and more, more, more. He lost not because he said he was right, but because he tried to say that wrong was right.
Lieberman lost like so many others will, mostly Republican, because they hitched their wagons to George Bush’s star and that fucker went supernova.
But not before one last, well-timed "Hail Mary" terrorist alert by Lieberman’s BFF…
Charlie Pierce rallies the leg-eating blogociraptors onward to the next primary in Rhode Island. Watch out, Chafee! According to wingnut logic, the Generalissimo Kos is going to make your loss look like the landing at Omaha Beach.
The Editors reviews Joe’s loss and comes to the conclusion that Lieberman is out on his kiester because . . . well . . . he’s Joetarded. Even so, "[t]he big loser here is, of course, George W. Bush, who lost his beard when Joe lost his party."
General J.C. Christian agrees with Marty Peretz on Ned Lamont’s friends: "Pigmentation is scary."
Spork provides another view of The Day After. So very, very sad. Or not.
World O’ Crap dons the waders to review a Felafel Boy analysis of the Lamont win and its impact on Middle East affairs. "As Bill notes, Liberman lost the Connecticut primary to “a rich guy” and you know how Bill hates the rich and famous with their fancy airs and landau roofs and indoor plumbing."
Uggabugga provides Joe’s new bumper sticker.
Brad R. over at Sadly, No! uncovers a terrorist plot to raise money. No wait, those are just Republicans trying to capitalize on the terrorist plot du jour. I’d like to sic Wedgie Man on them.
Over at Hairy Fish Nuts, professional loon Debbie Schussel is having a massive hissy over the eerily coincidental timing of the terrorist plot and the release this week of "Snakes on a Plane." Oh, Debbie. You’ve been mainlining the Vicks Vapo Rub again.
Kung Fu Monkey stares down the latest terrorist plot and goes all "hai-KEEBA!" on the Republican fearmongering.
And finally, Roger Ailes tries out a few numbers for the audience waiting on line at the airport:
"Rush Limbaugh was once again detained at the Palm Beach Airport for carrying contraband on his return flight from the Dominican Republic. In his defense, Rush claimed, ‘That’s not hair gel.’"

wolf1-nice work.
MCCLOUD!
(sorry, I just never get tired of that.)
thanx ccmask, i dun tried me hardest ;)
Fitz…hurry.
Happy birthday Watertiger, hope you get your million.
egregious,
gah, tomorrow’s almost here! Thanks!
hope everything’s okay with you.
I would like to see Lieberman explain how ANY of Bushco.’s random and not so random adventures have made the US safer against terrorist attack.
OT: Anyone have a perfect recipe for Cosmopolitans?
I chatted with a big DC Dem insider last night, and he tossed me a frightening justification for the Dems doing poorly in November:
We shouldn’t take either house of Congress this time because that gives plausible deniability to the Republicans for the ‘08 election. In other words, the moment we win back the House in ‘06 the Rethugs are going to begin screaming “Pelosi’s recession!”
Sure they will pull that b.s., and sure it might hurt among the “low information” voters, but using it as a justification to lose is INSANE and a good example of inside-the-beltway thinking.
watertiger @ 7
Thanks. Ya I’m in between meltdowns right now.
ccmask @ 9
1.5 oz premium vodka
splash Rose’s Lime Juice or juice of 1/4 lime (preferred)
0.5 oz Creme de Cassis
0.5 oz Triple Sec
Chill/shake over ice in martini shaker, chill martini glass (water & ice), serve with lime or lemon twist.
Most people use cranberrry juice, but the Creme de Cassis gives you the berry flavor and a nice extra kick.
Haven’t seen this mentioned elsewhere, though some have commented on the underlying factiness: given that everything Bush does is meant to send a political message, what does it mean that he claims to have recently read Camus’s The Stranger, the plot of which centers on killing a randomly-selected Arab for no reason?
1,000,000
hey, the local repuglican fish wrapper actually printed the story abour bush cutting funding for explosives detectors at airports
didn’t say a word about george’s hypocrisy in claiming to have made national security a priority
truth is, george bush doesn’t protect us
george bush just ACTS like he is protecting us
“Naturally, the common people
don’t want war, but they can
always be brought to the bidding
of the leaders.
Tell them they are being attacked,
and denounce the pacifists”
(aka liberals)
“for lack of patriotism and endangering
the country.
It works the same in every country.”
Sound like a Karl Rove statement?
Its actually Herman Goering
Reichsmarschall (Nuremberg Trials)
“If you tell a lie big enough
and keep repeating it,
people will eventually come to believe it.
The lie can be maintained only
for such time as the State can
shield the people from the political,
economic and/or military consequences
of the lie.
It thus becomes vitally important
for the State to use all of its powers
to repress dissent, for the truth is
the mortal enemy of the lie, and
thus by extension,
the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”

1.238 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Come on folks, Joe Lieberman and his pathetic threat to run on the Lieberman ticket are a boon to Democrats and all Democratic candidates in Connecticut. I will say that again in another way…the longer Joe threatens ta run in the general election, the more attention he directs to Bush and Bush’s failures not only in Iraq, but in ALL areas foreign and domestic. Take a look at the polls folks…60% oppose Bushfascism in every single pollable area!! The fear I hear about Rove makin’ a silk purse outta this pig is drivin’ me crazy!!
Wake up FDLers…don’t think yerselves into grabbin’ defeat from the jaws a victory here, stand up and show the sufferin’ majority of workin’ Americans the way home!! And, God dammit, HIT BACK!! At work, on the street, in church, in line at the supermarket…EVERYTHING IS BUSH’S FAULT!! Don’t let this moment get away…drive it down their throats!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND KICK THE SONS A BITCHES INTA LAST WEEK!!!
Hey, Teddy! ((((((((((Teddy)))))))))) ***smoochs***
we know bush is in trouble when he sends that cretin chertoff [remember katrina?] out to spin the terror theme
some say chertoff’s intelligent, but some said wolfowitz was intelligent too — americans have strange ways of measuring intelligence
why doesn’t anybody ask chertoff this question:
if the chemicals we’re not allowed to carry on board are dangerous when mixed, why are your screeners tossing them all into the same bin as thousands of passengers are stuck waiting nearby?
Much reading to catch up on, so maybe you’ve already talked about this? CNN reporter said this morning that American officials pressured the Brits to arrest the alleged terrorists a week earlier than they wanted? True? If so, talk about using fear for political gain…and subject material of Sun morn gasbag shows.
Watched V for Vendetta, Inside Man, and Johnny Depp’s Willy Wonka this rainy cabin weekend. Top notch, all–with powerful social/political commentary points well made.
And even in the remote heartland the Fargo paper’s op-ed opining was that J-Lie lost by his own hubris. Thanks to Howard Dean for his strong words on MTP that there’s a war on the middle class and that America will be strong again when the middle class is strong again.

ccmask — you can substitute cointreau for triple sec. Or we do, and no one seems to mind. :)
pach — like the creme de casis idea. I substitute pomegranite juice for a much less sweet pink drink that looks like a cosmo, but doesn’t taste like cotton candy.
ccmask @ 18
You can substitute Cointreu for the Triple Sec if you want. It’s more upscale, and the Cointreu is more of a bitter orange flavor, which can balance out the sweetness of the Creme de Cassis. The Triple Sec is more of a seweet orange flavor.
What’s the occasion?
Oh my god! Are you kidding? They don’t get it in DC, huh? What BS… if we don’t take it back we may not even have a country to worry about in 2008! Who said that? He needs to get his brain detoxed and his feet bathed in minerals and other good detox stuff!
Hey, everybody. Just stopping through as I procrastinate on doing my housework. My late nite post is humming in the wings. I put it in early today, so tune in tonight to hear Ann Coulter say, “You want fries with that?”

I liked Landau in “North by Northwest”
A good strategy means winning or losing. Karl Rove has his strategy for November already in play. At some point, the focus has to be on what Lamont and other Democrats will do to keep Americans safe.
As much as he is disliked, don’t underestimate Rove. It appears that he escaped Fitzgerald’s clutches through cunning. Some MSN (which has a great deal of support) has already started to shift its focus from Lieberman’s loss to why Lieberman may win in November.
There needs to be solid talking points on why the Iraq War didn’t make the country any safer, Bushes’ many failures, and where we go from here. Ned’s supporters in CT need to flood their papers with letters on how he will help win the War on Terror.
Answer Joe’s criticism of Lamont with Ned’s positive ideas. Joe had his time to make a difference. Bottom line is that he didn’t, and that the Iraq War, which was supposed to make us safer, is about to bring civil war to that country. The Iraq War and the War on Terror are different. IMO, people need to be reminded of that over and over and over again.
*atou @ 10 and victoria2dc –
the “we should leave the republicans the congress in 2006″ meme has been floating around the DC democratic insider community for a while. I spent the good part of a flight from Oakland to Dulles discussing this with a a DLC associated campaign consultant in 2005. Of course, he was immediately dismissive of my support for Howard Dean and the 50 state strategy.
I wasn’t impressed then, and I’m not now.
victoria2dc @ 31
I actually like this guy, and I don’t want to out him. What amazes me is that he is very senior in Democratic Establishment politics, and he was dead serious in his opinion that we should not win back either house of Congress. Truly astonishing.
BTW- anyone know why it is taking so long to load comments or access the site?
As the late nite free for all attracted trolls and kooks to the party (just referring to myself here..), let me point out one notion that may/might/should gain traction.
Prodigal Greens Bouy Dems
Lieberman’s loss removes what may have been the political jaundice that revolted the squeamish Greens in the first place.
Dems should be aware that Lieberman on the 2000 ticket may have been the first dirty trick of the election. Greens, repelled by the Lieber-quo wanted no part of it and caused a significant rift within the left.
That rift has closed with Joe’s defeat. Dems will capitolize on it. (Ok we should capitalize too.)
Joe was radioactive then in a way that folks can readily see now. N’est ce pas?
Oh: #10
In other words, the moment we win back the House in ‘06 the Rethugs are going to begin screaming “Pelosi’s recession!”
The recession of 2007-2008 will happen because of the changes made to the administration after the Nov. election. (Can you say impeachment?) It will end at the beginning of 2009 with a democrat having won the national contest imho. Following the one year recovery, I hate to say it, another recession. Why? Good question. Maybe the so-called national unity concept gains enough traction to have a moderate become immoderate after a year in power.
OK, I don’t have a job so I just have to make this stuff up.
This is why I love this guy. GO NED: http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00351.html
Valley Girl @ 52
It might be the load on C&L right now, which is hosted with us. We’re still sorting out the root causes. Traffic here is not unusually high today.
Sorry, and thanks for your patience!
This week’s revelations surrounding the UK terror plot targeting U.S. bound airliners once again focused attention on the phenomenon of “homegrown terrorism.” And just as in the aftermath of last November’s street riots in France, a flood of analysis seeks to explain the threat of radical Islamic extremism in Europe and its relative absence in the United States.
For an analysis as to why commentators of all political stripes have it wrong, see:
“Homegrown Terrorism in the U.S. and Europe.”
I like what Lamont says today in the WashPo about Cheney’s and Lieberman’s comments:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00351.html
*atou, do you get the sense that your likeable friend and HIS friends are actively, knowingly going to try to fulfill his opinion? Because if they are, we’re gonna need you to help us with as much close-in intell as possible — y’know? Are you ready to do that?
Rob Zuber @ 57
Yeah, he’s becoming a tactical thinker (politically) and he’s getting great advise. Bravo Ned!
rcauthen@13
It means that he didn’t read it, wouldn’t have understood it, and has less sense of irony than a gila monster has feathers.
“what does it mean that he claims to have recently read Camus’s The Stranger, the plot of which centers on killing a randomly-selected Arab for no reason?”
“Joe Lieberman lost yesterday or was it the day beofre?”
The weirdest piece of this outage we’re having, to me, is that I can get the homepage pretty easily — it’s the threadpage that wants to hide. Por que, I wonder.
Sorry we’ve been having server problems, C&L (who we share servers with) having thesame problem. We’re working on it.
I wrote that recipe down, Pach, and I plan on using it.
Make ‘em moom over, Jane — dang-pillow-hoggers! If they won’t do it for you, maybe Poodle Kommand can smile and persuade?
TRex:
Mentioning Coulter, anyone see Richard Roeper’s review of 9/11? He took the opportunity to SLAM Coulter about her comments about the Jersey Girls.
I blogged about it, over at my place.
lotus @ 58
I don’t think he seeks to undermine the Democrats. Instead, he and people like him have a deep-seated defeatism that helps their failures go down more easily the next time they happen. Cockamamie strategies like “let’s lose this time so we can win big next time” just reflect a lack of conviction to the ideals of the party and a lack of respect for the voters.
When his career gets in the way of our democracy, you can be sure what side I will work for. In his mind, it’s “just business,” so in my mind, undermining machine politics is “just business” as well. The reason we will win is because we are the only ones coming to the table with passion.

Good on ya, *atou.
This portrait you’ve sketched really is a line drawing, isn’t it? Washington, D.C. — the company town with its innards rotted out, just a husk left to waft away on the breeze.*
I suspect that your friend and his circle — spiritually-depleted and moribund old fookers who’ve outlived their usefulness even to themselves — need the release that’s coming as much as we do.
* that would be us
The DLC proclaims: “We believe that economic growth generated in the private sector is the prerequisite for opportunity, and that government’s role is to promote growth and to equip Americans with the tools they need to prosper in the New Economy.”
The “New Economy”? I suppose that means out-sourcing, unlivable wages, with no benefits, anti-union/anti-worker safety initiatives, unaffordable health care, inflation, poor schools and a host of other anti-working women and men measures.
The so called “Democratic Leadership Council” is anything but. This conservative, pro-corporate outfit needs to be purged. And to think the DLC bills itself as leading “the New Democrat Movement, a national network of elected officials and community leaders whose innovative ideas are modernizing progressive politics for the 21 st century.” I despise the DLC. And I’d like to see a list of the “national network of elected officials” working on behalf of the DLC.
lotus –
I live and work in that company town too, and trust me, it’s not the old f*ckers you need to worry about. Part of the reason I’m too busy to blog is that the bureaucratic infighting in response to the White House’s moronic “initiatives” requires every bit of my attention. This town is full of young (25-45) people whose careers depend on selling themselves to get to the next level.
And it’s not just the people in the administration. The consulting firms, public relations agencies and law firms are full of bright young things just waiting their turn, based on electoral results.
OK, I think it’s time to make one of the cosmos Pach offered upstream.
Bush Approval AP Plummets to 33
This is from a Political Science Prof at the University of Wisconsin, Charles Franklin. Hotline links to him frequently.
I saw the article about Bush trying to divert the funds, but the thing I thought was missing is what did he intend to do with them.
Nobody mentioned that!
Has anyone seen this?
Again, the Bush/Coulter Republican Party reaches in to the bag of tricks and sends a general out to play political spinmiester.
(Snip)
“FALLUJAH, Iraq – The top U.S. general dropped into this volatile city Sunday to hear what was on the minds of Marines doing battle daily with a resilient and deadly insurgency. Some of what he heard sounded like a sign of creeping doubt — not about the Marines’ mission but about the wider purpose it is supposed to be serving as the U.S. war death count tops 2,600.”
(Then the zinger, or maybe Zilmer)
“But they are not immune to the discussions they see in public communications,” Zilmer said.
(Beating up on the press over there so they don’t report over here.)

OT “Lamont: Lieberman sounded like Cheney”
By ANDREW MIGA
Associated Press Writer
“WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Senate nominee Ned Lamont, the anti-war candidate who toppled Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Connecticut primary, says he was surprised by Lieberman and Vice President Dick Cheney’s claims that his victory could embolden terrorists…..”
JC,
It is wierd watching this happen, but the spin machine is working in reverse.
Now the Democrats are framing the debates and the Bush/Coulter Republicans are starting to have to dance like monkies.
This story makes me realize that the tide is turning, the press is standing back up again in some areas.
A headline:
“Sickened Iraq Vets Blame Depleted Uranium”
*How many mothers and friends are going to start asking themselves about this aspect of the war?
D.U will be the Agent Orange of our time.

Maybe getting radiation sickness isn’t a good way to support troops.

GSD –
Depleted Uranium is a heavy metal, and almost ALL heavy metals are extremely toxic. Lead, Mercury, Uranium — they all can poison and kill, even without the added hazard of radioactivity.
Guess who never has to deal with the repercussions from depleted uranium?
George W. Bush, Ann Coulter, Dick Cheney, John Fund, William Kristol, David Broder, Joe Klien, Dennis Hastert, Condi, Rummy and the rest of the Joe Lieberman Dancers.

sorry to go off topic, I posted this in the book salon which takes the discussion off the bood…bad
anyway, this was GREAT
one of Lamont’s staffers was doing a raido interview on “state of belief”, an air America program with a progressive host who is also a member of the clergy
what happened was INCREDIBLE!
(can someone find out this Lamont staffer’s name please, and unbeleiveably well spoken gentleman who sounds like he’s been in politics all his life)
anyway, the conversation came around to cheney’s statement assiciating the lieberman loss to terrorism
the staffer, in an even temper went OFF on the vice president
he started with;
the vice president has been wrong on just about everything he’s said concerning national security, there were no weapons of mass destruction, Iraq WAS not associated with terrorism, I DON’T feel safer because we attacked Iraq, the middle east ISN’T safer, there is MORE unrest, there is MORE tension, and the vice president has been very dangerous to national security
his decisions have been remarkably fine for his personal wealth, but as far as national security, he has shown his decisions are dangerous to America”
now, that’s not verbatum, I did it from memory, but believe me, I didn’t embelish…this guy just EMBARRASSED the vice president, IT WAS INCREDIBLE
maybe somehow the lamont team can get a copy of that interview and post that protion for us to download and cherish
me to me –
Cross post that at the Lamont Blog, bringing it to the attention of Tim Tagaris.
