Ahhh…A foiled “terraist” plot immediately after the antiwar candidate wins. I’m surprised they broke it out so soon. I figured they would at least wait until October.

In a side note, I wonder if our red alert is more of a pink alert due to the amount of dust that has gathered on the homeland security chart due to lack of use….

I found this interesting: Is Joe Lieberman a Bad Jew?

Like many of you, I first noticed Sen. Joseph Lieberman after that pompous, silly rebuke of President Clinton’s behavior from the floor of the Senate in 1998. My thoughts at the time were twofold. As a Democrat, I resented Lieberman giving any cover to what looked and felt like an attempted coup. I also wondered what the heck a U.S. senator was doing trying to give anyone lessons in morality. Politics is not a profession that makes it easy for a person to stay on a straight moral path. The fact that I heard nothing from Lieberman when Newt Gingrich’s personal life made news only confirmed my initial impression.

I’m still perturbed about the Bush administration’s proposed changes to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect those who authorized “humiliating and degrading treatment” of detainees (I think this is normally known as “torture”).

Am sick to death of these people acting like criminals and then trying to change the laws to save themselves from prosecution when the rest of the country finds out what they were up to.

Am feeling cranky this morning – sorry. Not a coffee drinker, so that won’t help.

Nothing has caught my eye this morning. But let me tell you how boring my cubicle is after roaming around the country side for four days. Drat!

I usually lurk but I wanted to say something today. Is it totally cynical of me that the first thing I thought of when I heard this on the radio this morning was: “How convenient for Bush and Lieberman?” I just can’t believe the timing! I live in Connecticut but I didn’t do enough for Ned’s campaign, just donated money and did a little phone banking via MoveOn. My Dad had a heart attack 2 weeks ago and I couldn’t do more at the time. But, he’s much better now, and my hubbie and I both have decided we are going to do whatever it takes to help Ned win in November. My 11 year old daughter wants to go canvessing with us, she says she is going to bring her video camera along and she needs me to buy her some editing software! My little blogger, I’m so proud.

Josh Marshall has a nice takedown of the Time Magazine piece that just regurgitated the Rovian response to the Lamont victory — that the Republicans are overjoyed because now they can accuse the Dems of being weak on security. It probably took a bit of courage on Josh’s part to slam Time Magazine because he just had a piece in Time a couple of days ago on the CT election. So he apparently is now a guest columnist for Time. In a way too bad. I would rather see him not get anywhere near the big media. But, the man has a right to earn his livelihood.

Yesterday on NPR David Brooks spoke of the emergence of a new McCain-Lieberman Party that will appeal to moderates who are fed up of the extremists on both the right and the left. I understand that Mayor Bloomberg is joining this party and will be campaigning for Lieberman in Connecticut. Maybe for simplicity they could call it the NeoCon Party.

As for security at Heathrow, as of 36 hours ago there wasn’t a whiff of anything tense. I’ve seen more uptight paranoia in small town airports in the midwest. The Republicans were always going to portray the Democrats as weak on security anyway. Even if Lieberman would have won. The R’s have worked overtime to portray the D’s as cowards. If they keep us busy with the “no, we’re not” track nobody will ask why they keep sending our people to be killed and maimed so little Georgie won’t have to be embarrassed by admitting he lied to get us into a war. Or admitting that he’s completely destroyed one country and has made significant inroads into destroying America.

The TSA has taken the bold step of not allowing liquids in carry-on baggage anymore. Often wondered how they differentiated between a flask of Vodka and a flask of Nitro-Glycerin, so probably an wise if overdue change.

On this one, I don’t question the timing, especially as the whole alert started with the UK’s Scotland Yard, not US Homeland Security. If Michael Chertoff had been the one to announce this to the world, then I would have been more dubious. Given the opinions in the UK toward the Bush administration, I can’t imagine Blair & Co. agreeing to any kind of “let’s round up some folks, call them terrorists, and crank up airline security all to make Dubya look good” kind of plot.

Actually, this is an opportunity to start working on the message to separate Iraq from terrorism. This one looks real to me–it’s not some loon with a blowtorch planning to take the Brooklyn Bridge or some poor sap who got entrapped into a money laundering deal.

So we should be pleased that British intelligence penetrated this plot, and believe that American resources should be directed away from the war in Iraq and to finding and stopping actual terrorist plots.

Y’all don’t be getting too oooy-&-wowy over “Scotland Yard,” okay? If you’ve followed the Britpress for a few years, you’ll share the unhappy realization that Blighty’s coppers are every bit as incompetent as our numskulls. We just like their accents better, ’sall.

I watched the news conference from Scotland Yard on the BBC this morning . . . I was struck by the pains the British took to avoid the usual race-baiting and scare-mongering that that happens in the US. They referred to the Muslim community in Britain as their allies in fighting terrorism. What a difference from the way things happen here. Then they cut to the smug, self-congratulatory Chertoff in the US. How lucky for him that Scotland Yard is actually doing their job and he can stand in front of the cameras and take credit for it.

I too was caught by this. Republicans martyring Joe in the war on terror is a surefire way to dampen Joe’s “For Joe” independent bid. It puts the smiley exclamation point on Ned’s campaign message about Joe.

Also, it is just inane. Ned represents a strong majority of the whole country about Bush’s foreign policy. I guess the whole nation is for Osama, which if you watch the Tony Snow clip at Crooks and Liars, is kind of what Snow is saying:

I agree that it does look like there was some legitimate terrorist thingy goin’ on. But, I am in no way convinced it wasn’t used politically. The Brits may have been keeping tabs on some legitimate al qaeda and maybe even knew of their plot. They have already said that they didn’t know of a date that the attack was to go down. So, were the Brits on stand-by until the Chimpster gave them the go-ahead to make the bust? When the timing was politically right? They did say that Chimpy has known about the plot for a while.

Donna Edwards is running against Albert Wynn in the Democratic primary in an US House district that covers much of the eastern suburbs of DC in Maryland. Wynn has supported a series of Bush initiatives, including the Iraq War, the bankruptcy bill, the energy bill, the estate tax, and net neutrality. How can this guy still be representing a very liberal district? Donna Edwards is an intelligent, articulate, and progressive candidate who deserves a second look.

I understand the “Karl Rove directs all beings in the Universe” idea — buy I don’t see that here. And even if the timing was orchestrated, it will only benefit the Democrats. The Republican playbook is premised on the outdated notion that the people prefer the Republicans when it comes to security. That is no longer true. Every time one of these terror alerts goes up, people do not say, Thank God Chertoff is Homeland Security Director!” They say, “Shit, these guys in charge have no idea what is happening — we are less safe than we were on September 11th….” So all these scares really reinforce the “time for a change” attitudes which in turn help Democrats.

The Democratic response to this ought to be something like:

“We will not be safe in this country until the failed Chertoff is replaced.” Our troops do not stand a chance as long as the failed Rumsfeld is allowed to stay in office.”

Personalize it to the losers. The people will make the connection to Bush.

Anyway, the piece that has most jogged my mind so far this morning is entitled “The Sweetness of Lieberman’s Defeat” by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair on Counterpunch. I don’t necessarily agree with everything here, but many of their disturbing contrarian assertions are firmly rooted in fact.

Also, I was checking out this interview with Maxine Waters (given last month), via the awesome blog Negrophile, which is incidentally currently drawing attention to the 2006 Black Weblog Awards. Ya know, these are the kinds of links you don’t often run across in places like FDL and Kos…

Sir Ian Blair (no relation), head of the Yard, is found to have, ahem, misspoken rather badly, etc., at the time and later. But last I heard (before my attention got deflected to Ned, Lebanon, et al.), Sir Ian’s still hanging onto his job with his fingernails.

Jane Tennison does not exist. Alas.

RAY SUAREZ: An official from the federal air marshal service described what happened in Miami a short time ago. Here’s an excerpt of what he said.

JAMES BAUER: At approximately 2:10 this afternoon, American Airlines Flight 924 was boarding at Gate D.-42 — it was in the boarding process. An individual later tentatively identified as Rigoberto Alpizar, age 44, was boarding that aircraft as well.

At some point, he uttered threatening words that included a sense that, in fact, that he had a bomb. There were federal air marshals on board the aircraft. They came out of their cover, confronted him, and he remained noncompliant with their instructions.

As he was attempting to evade them, his actions caused the FAM’s to fire shots and, in fact, he is deceased.

The Miami-Dade Police Department responded to this event and in fact are conducting the shooting investigation.

The FBI also responded to this, and a crime was committed aboard an American carrier aircraft and they have jurisdiction in that matter, and to see whether or not there’s a nexus to terrorism.

RAY SUAREZ: Sara Goo has been covering this story for the Washington Post and she joins me now.

Sara, what do we know, if anything, about Rigoberto Alpizar? Was he a Floridian getting on a plane to leave Miami Airport? Was he in transit? Had he just come in from Colombia as that flight had?

SARA GOO: We are still learning a little bit about this man but we do know that he’s 44-years-old. We are told by Homeland Security officials that he is a U.S. citizen. This flight originated in Colombia, stopped in Miami and then was to go on at this point to Orlando.

We have heard reports that this gentleman was on the original flight from Colombia, but federal officials say everyone from that plane departed, cleared customs, and then re-boarded again.

RAY SUAREZ: And the air marshal, would he have been at that point boarding the flight along with Mr. Alpizar?

SARA GOO: We don’t know anything about the air marshal’s itinerary; that information is not publicly available to us.

I take this alert seriously. I believe the arrests are in the pursuit of real security.

As for security at Heathrow, as of 36 hours ago there wasn’t a whiff of anything tense. I’ve seen more uptight paranoia in small town airports in the midwest. I watched the news conference from Scotland Yard on the BBC this morning . . . I was struck by the pains the British took to avoid the usual race-baiting and scare-mongering that that happens in the US. They referred to the Muslim community in Britain as their allies in fighting terrorism. What a difference from the way things happen here. Then they cut to the smug, self-congratulatory Chertoff in the US. How lucky for him that Scotland Yard is actually doing their job and he can stand in front of the cameras and take credit for it.

Terrorists attempt to take over plane with volatile gasses. From now on, all oxygen and other gasses will be pumped out of passenger planes during flight. Passengers are advised to hold their breath really good.

Seriously, where the hell is this going to end? At some point it’s easier to just stop flying completely. Yeah, let’s destroy major sectors of our economy to save ourselves!

I got an e-mail from a friend about a big MoveOn phone-banking project to increase progressive turnout all over the country. I’m sure most of you are already aware of it, but if you aren’t then please check it out. You know the Republicans are working the voter turnout on their side, and MoveOn has some excellent new technology.

I’ve been reading John Dean’s “Conservatives Without Conscience”. I’m not a big fan of the kind of psychological stuff that he has in there, but he does provide some pretty well-informed background on conservatism, the rise of the religous right, and the power factions in the Republican party. I’ve always wondered what conservatism actually was, and now I know why; It’s whatever you want it to be, which makes it a very useful big-tent ideology.

Yesterday morning I was privileged to see Congresswoman Waters in the hotel across from Ned’s Campaign headquarters. She was VERY interested when I mentioned that I was going home to volunteer for Donna Edwards campaign and asked if she had a shot. I don’t have a feeling about that yet but hopefully I will after some canvassing. I just don’t want the good feeling from the CT campaign to go away.

I’m watching the news this morning on the busted up terror plot out of Heathrow. As former Coast Guard, I am also aware of how vulnerable we are in the area of port security. I’m sure there are other areas we could be positively spending our efforts and money that would be equally important.

As I watch the mountains of U.S. money flow into Iraq, I wonder just how vulnerable we’ve been left by this misguided adventure. Don’t you think our resources could be better spent on protecting THIS country?

It is time to leave Iraq, in a quick and orderly manner. The costs to us in human lives is tragic. The costs to us in shear dollars is disgusting.

Terrorists attempt to take over plane with volatile gasses. From now on, all oxygen and other gasses will be pumped out of passenger planes during flight. Passengers are advised to hold their breath really good.

Seriously, where the hell is this going to end? At some point it’s easier to just stop flying completely. Yeah, let’s destroy major sectors of our economy to save ourselves!

My first thought, like many of you here, was that it was awfully convenient timing for a raised terror alert. Must be election season. Part of my work requires ordering research chemicals and it is true since 9/11 that they are moderately harder to get. However, if someone really wanted something nasty (and yes, the individual components would probably look just like water) in all likelihood it wouldn’t be too hard. The chemistry isn’t that complicated. It would be nice if DHS actually had someone or someones working on this. I kind of doubt it, though. I feel SAFE!

Fair point. Consider, though: after the primary, there may be a perceived possibility of affecting Lieberman’s independent run. Der Shrubbenfuhreradministration might only have planned to openly back Lieberman (its best bet, since the Republican candidate is already a write-off) if the primary results made it necessary to do so.

I’m still a bit surprised that Rove allowed his “we got your six, buddy” announcement to make national press if he could help it. It only helps to prove the point that Holy Joe is an administration tool and a wolf in a poorly-tailored sheep costume, and that can’t help his case.

The lead editorial in the Washington Post this am saying that Lieberman would be a “better senator for Connecticut.” Ugh! The editorial page has dismayed me more often than not. The editors were huge backers for the war in Iraq and cheered the Bush administration.

as to ‘the majority report’, i think it’s boring — listening to that guy’s like going to chapel & listening to that woman’s like hearing fingernails scraping along a blackboard: she also has obvious conflicts of interest — unlike the women of fdl, she’s none too bright either

As for Sam, I first heard of Ned Lamont from Sam, and he never let up his enthusiasm for him. Likewise for all the Fighting Dems he has on every Tuesday as well as other worthy candidates.

Sam is a treasure. He’s grown into his show and then some.

I second all the comments about how convenient the “Terrorist” plot is so soon after Lamont won. We’re going to get a lot of that. Remember, through everything, propaganda is that which we can’t check. So, in order for it to be a real terrorist plot, you have to believe the government. Yeah, right. Just like I believe the WTC was brought down by a couple of airplanes.

Anyone who fears a teror attack is a fool. Anyone who puts any credence in tyhe color-coded terror announcemnts is a bigger fool. Anybody who believes these “Terra plot foiled” stories is too stupid to be allowed to live. If there is another “terra” attack on US soil, I promise you it will be an inside job.

Yup, I’m another one who yawned, said “just in time” and turned the channel when I heard about the “terra” attack prevented.

Team Bush really needs another attack to happen before the election – by O’Loofah’s “logic”, the GOP has now crossed the line into treason.

This one appears to have been a more serious plot than the last few “foiled”, but then again they always appear that way at first. Even money says that by tomorrow, it turns out a few Arabs planned to meet for mugs of coffee and orange juice before taking a flight to a sales conference.

Anne at 7 I agree we need to keep reminding people how this government subverts our laws, our Constitution. Yes, it is on subject but do we need to discuss Rovian strategy re: liberal bloggers being soft on terrism. Lets not take our eyes of the prize-Nov.’06 and ‘08

I disagree with the lamont ploy, i’m more inclined to think it was designed to take isreal of the front page so they can continue the destruction of lebenon, unhinderd.

I’m waiting for my call back from the Edwards campaign. Donna Edwards signs are going up around my neighborhood. Yesterday morning I was privileged to see Congresswoman Waters in the hotel across from Ned’s Campaign headquarters. She was VERY interested when I mentioned that I was going home to volunteer for Donna Edwards campaign and asked if she had a shot. I don’t have a feeling about that yet but hopefully I will after some canvassing. I just don’t want the good feeling from the CT campaign to go away.

I hope she does have a shot. Edwards seems like her views are more in line with the majority of that district than are Wynn’s. Cripes, when was the last time Wynn had a reasonable challenger? Almost not since his very first campaign.

Remember the fruitloop Republican that kept running against him year after year? The guy’s two platforms were to 1. restrict “brothels” from being built/operated next to elementary schools and 2. to require all Maryland gun owners to buy and use the safety locks his company makes (the company is probably run out of his mother’s basement).

We must be getting close to yet another American election cycle, with the Republican pols down in the polls ~ as we can see from here your ‘Terror Alert’ lamp is lit, (on a day when Mr. Bush & Ms. Rice would otherwise be enduring in the U.N. a humiliating defeat vis-a-vis “diplomatic efforts for cease-fire” in Lebanon, the Third Front of the War On Terrorism). And even the most careful, informed commenters, such as our own Professor Juan Cole, does write with apparent certainty:

Well, we know that the reason is not as simple as, “They Hate Our Democracy.” That sounds like something an otherwise able but drunk seaman would say; i mean, that reason is not even reason-able.

Perhaps the reason that Nothing Happened, happened, is that Mr. Bush did, or did not do something, Over There, or Over Here ~ that he shouldn’t or should’ve. It’s all up to him, don’cha know ~ everyone else having breakfast in America, watching the “Shit Happened Show” on their empTeeVee’s is helpless, if not happy about shit that does or didn’t happen ~ We’re all just JAFO’s “Just Another Frigging Observer,” as they write on the helmets of the weapons officers on those two-man attack helicopters and fighter-bombers.

Or perhaps the reason that Nothing Happened, happened, is that those ever-vigilant secret service folks foiled a secret plot (it is more plausible, if not reasonable, n’est-ce pas ? )

But if that’s the case, we’ll never know, will we? (it’s all a secret).

And, besides, i’ve got RUBBLE FATIGUE, and even without the BANG BANG, this is “GOOD NEWS”.
