Late Nite FDL: Gonna Send Five Copies to my Mother!

By: TRex Thursday August 10, 2006 8:36 pm

We take all kindsa pills/That give us all kindsa thrills/But the biggest kick you’ve ever known/Is the one that’ll hitcha when ya see your picture/On the cover of the Rolling Stone!/Rolling Stooooooooone…

Ah, yes, it has come to pass.  Surely it’s a sign of the apocalypse when I, TRex, am featured in the Wall Street Journal.   My mom will fall over dead from shock.

To wit:

Blogging the Connecticut Primary

They’re part pundit, part power broker. They’re zealous volunteers and journalists — sometimes at the same time. They’re bloggers, a key contingent who have helped push Ned Lamont’s primary bid. Around 30 bloggers have been given credentials by the U.S. Senate hopeful’s campaign, and they’ve established a bureau of sorts at Lamont’s headquarters.

David FergusonHalf are from Connecticut, said Christina O’Connell, a volunteer media coordinator for the Lamont camp. But the others are from across the country, drawn by a race they see as a bellwether for the nation’s political climate.

“This race is a microcosm for what’s happening all over the country,” said David Ferguson, an Athens, Ga., resident who blogs under the name TRex. “People are fed up.”

Ferguson, a 38-year-old who sports horn-rimmed glasses and a Johnny Unitas style brush cut, describes what he does as “left-wing political satire.” He says there’s high interest in the Lamont-Lieberman contest across the country. But, he says that some bloggers don’t want large media outlets to overstate their importance to Lamont’s success. “People are thinking the bloggers are the story and we’re not,” said Ferguson, who traveled from Georgia to both volunteer for and blog on the Lamont campaign. “We’re just reporting on the main story.”
–Matt Phillips

Needless to say, from now on you must all address me as "M’Lord", or "Your Majesty".  You guys don’t mind, do you?

Clearly my evil plan is working!  Mwaaah-haaaa-haaaaaaa-haaaaaaa!!!  Puny earthlings!  You are no match for my powaaaaaaaaaah!!

*Cough!*

Doing the Supervillain Voice always makes my throat hurt.  Drat.  I guess I’ll just have to be nice.

Or not.  Seeing my real name and home town up there does raise concerns that it’s just become dramatically easier for some wingnut f*&ker to "out" my personal information, but since I got a certain Reich-Wing Hysteric’s current contact information from an anonymous emailer last week (and I have verified it), I feel a little safer.  If I start getting death threats and harrassing calls, I might just have to use it.

I don’t want to use this information, but I will not hesitate to deploy it in self defense.  It could well be any one of the right-wing freaks who lurk here and occasionally put up bitchy little posts about us.  If you were a little neocon sock puppet, would you want to take that chance?  Feel lucky?  Well, punk?  Do ya?

(Note: The owners of this site in no way condone the use of personal contact information in a malicious way, so OF COURSE, I’m kidding.  What’s that Coulter line?  It’s just jokes, y’all!  Just jokes!  Mostly.)

I got a vaguely threatening email while I was in CT.  "I hear you have certain information," it said, "The site was hacked.  You should know that’s a federal crime."

Well, frankly I couldn’t hack my way out of a wet paper bag, but really, what can you do when such things fall right in your lap?

Who would Jesus do?  I hear he was actually pretty big on running the false prophets and predators out of the temple, no pussy-footing around on that one.

But why bother with such dire concerns when we should be celebrating?  This marks the beginning of the next phase in my quest for World Domination.  ALL SHALL LOVE ME…AND DESPAAAAAAIR!!  [/Galadriel]

*Cough!*, *cough!*

I gotta quit doing that.  At least until I quit smoking.

Hope you all are well.  Have a good night!

Oh, and P.S.: If you feel so inclined, you might want to write to Matt Phillips and thank him for a straightforward, non-hit-piece about bloggers.  I know I’m going to.  It’s pretty rare when they get it right, so when they do, they should be thanked.  This writer struck me as a really intelligent and talented guy, so show some love, y’all:

washwire@wsj.com

Part of what I think made that interview go so well is that I remembered some of The Fabulous Xtina Siun’s Tips for Talking to the Mainstream Media:

1. Reporters are people, too.  They feel like they’re getting it from both sides, so treat them like you would want them to treat you.

2. Never throw anything into the mix that you don’t want to see in print.  It’s easier not to say something than to say it and then declare it "off the record".

3. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

4. Be honest.

5. Be polite.

There’s more, but we might need to make that a whole post unto itself.  Maybe something for the Roots Project.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for now.  Take care of yourselves.

Thank you and good night.

Needless to say, from now on you must all address me as “M’Lord”, or “Your Majesty”. You guys don’t mind, do you?

Actually, yes I do. Didn’t you know that I must reserve that title for Monsignor Kos.

It’s very brave you posting a comment like that. What if Kos sees? You’re risking excommunication. It’s dangerous ground and I want no part of it.

August 10th, 2006 at 8:48 pm

Congratulations, Sir Rex. We are not worthy… :)

August 10th, 2006 at 8:48 pm

TRex–can we all claim, like the little girl in the old Shake-and-Bake commercial, “And I he’p’d?” It’s a privilege to comment on Your Royal Thread.

Holy shit dude, you hit the big time. You a playa! Just don’t sell out like Wonkette did, will ya?

Wait a minute, TRex . . . what’s with the photo? Don’t you get one of those little pencil-dot drawings when you appear in the Journal?

Or is that just a dead-tree thing?

August 10th, 2006 at 8:54 pm

There’s more, but we might need to make that a whole post unto itself. Maybe something for the Roots Project.

Hell is yeah – bring this discussion into the Roots Project and we can really train some folks on how to do this. This is a great media lesson, particularly recalling how resistant most of us (myself included) were to being interviewed by WSJ reporter Phillips.

I actually think it’s something we need to work on as bloggers. The MSM want to cover us and if we express a willingness to truly educate them about what we do online, we’ll get more and more results like this.

A friend of mine who does media trainings says that you should talk to reporters like you talk to nine year-olds. Be simple and be prepared to repeat yourself. And don’t hold it against them when they don’t understand.

August 10th, 2006 at 8:54 pm

congrats, trex.

we hope you don’t mind if we don’t call you “your majesty,” as we already speak in the royal ‘we.’

Eli Pariser on Colbert just now:

He’s brilliant and he’s right. Can’t wait to try wrapping him into the Roots Project.

Krugman

Heh. Indeed.

The question now is how deep into the gutter Mr. Lieberman’s ego will drag him.

There’s an overwhelming consensus among national security experts that the war in Iraq has undermined, not strengthened, the fight against terrorism. Yet yesterday Mr. Lieberman, sounding just like Dick Cheney — and acting as a propaganda tool for Republicans trying to Swift-boat the party of which he still claims to be a member — suggested that the changes in Iraq policy that Mr. Lamont wants would be “taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England.”

In other words, not only isn’t Mr. Lieberman sensible, he may be beyond redemption.

TRex – Definately the face of the “American Taliban.” Or, maybe you’re more of the “Pol Pot of the Democratic Party.” See that picture of Ned with his family? First thing that comes to mind is “that mountain of skulls in Cambodia,” ain’t it? (Cal Thomas, John Gibson quotes)

Obvious talking point, or framing they’re pushing hard right now as evidenced by recent Media Matters postings. Not sure it’s gonna work for ‘em anymore.

I’ll check back in once I’ve showered Gus and Juan with affection and kisses.

August 10th, 2006 at 9:03 pm

Christina had a great spiel that bears repeating over and over. TRex’s spotlight glowed that much brighter because of it.

The great thing about the Lamont campaign is that everyone was so positive. From the volunteers at the offices, to the volunteers at GospelFest, to the bloggers and even the hotel staff (though they will be cleaning up glitter all over the hotel for months).

Sure there was tension, but the positive message came through. The press folk who want to act like stenos must be lonely people. The only folks they get to talk to are one another and the nasty repug. machinists.

The Pajamahadeen are represented well by our own TRex in that article.

I agree Matt, either TRex or Christina Siun should do a care and feeding piece for the Media Arts group at SRP HQ, will you coordinate that? Use this article as a template, plus any video from the last few days of Kos on Tweety’s show or anywhere else he’s been, he’s doing quite well on camera these days.

Here is a message for meta -
a propos of last night’s late night, I spoke with my sister this morning. She told me that volunteers at VA hospitals are needful and welcome. She had a very favorable impression of the volunteers at the hospital where she worked, that they were principled, motivated, and generous people who did good work. She also remarked that there are a lot of lonesome people in VA hospitals, and that is something volunteers can help with.

There should be a volunteer coordinator at every VA hospital – you would just phone the main number at your local VA and ask to be connected to the volunteer coordinator. They will have a game plan and set activities for which volunteers are needed, so there need be no concern over whether you are doing something helpful.

hopefully you will catch this post, because I am still jetlagged, and I think I hear the sleep train coming up the tracks with a full head of steam.

So now he wants to do away with the two-party system, and only allow Republicans to participate in politics? Or just require Democrats to be totally subservient and STFU? I don’t think either of those arrangements are called democracy, Joe.

And when the Rove/Coultergeist Republican Party is running the country into the ground as it has been for the past five and a half years, you’d better believe we want Democrats to fight against them.

I hate to say this, but I am beginning to think that Joe is not playing with a full deck. His words and actions of late portray someone who is delusional to the point of not being able to recognize the two-foot radius or reality surrounding himself, much less the world out there. I am no shrink, just an observer of human nature, but he strikes me as being close to cracking up. A desperate man hiding under the veneer of optimism, incapable of sound judgement. The sycophants around him are not serving him well, and his corporate supporters just see him as a tool. He kind of reminds me of Willy Loman. I kid you not. I guess in the end you have to say he is still a human being and attention must be paid. That was hard for me to say, but there it is.

The New Haven Register ran a strong editorial today telling Joe to get out of the race. A friend in CT, who told me about this editorial, also said that the print edition has a banner headline over the editorial in very large print… something he’d never seen before. The New Haven Register endorsed Lieberman in the primary — they’re over him now (registration required, by the way):

“…The primary vote should have told Lieberman that he was out of touch with the state that he had taken too much for granted. Until almost the closing days of the election, he seemed unable to gauge the deep anger of Democrats over the war in Iraq and his support for it.”

Rasmussen is full of cr@p for doing a poll the day after the primary (I understand random sampling but 550 people?). Fact of the matter is, many folks, even in CT, only know Lamont through Lierman’s very negative prism. And once people get to see who Ned really is they tend to be won over very quickly. Don’t underestimate the impact of being a successful businessman from Greenwich on Republicans. And the impact of being an honest, straight foward problem-solver on Independents.

I also don’t think Lieberman’s self destruction has had time to sink in yet, and as such is not reflected in the opinion poll. I certainly hope Rasmussen plans on redoing that poll next week and the week after.

Unfortunately Lierman is grasping at straws and 46% will be good enough to spur him on.

Well, shades of the Noor Khan affair! Everything else I’d heard about it Thursday suggested this—long lags during which info stovepiped up from operational levels, where maybe it would have been handled responsibly, to the politicos, who then force UK to roll up an operation by going public.

You know, I believe there’s always been some tension between US and UK intel agencies, even when neither side was as politicized as now. These days, it wouldn’t surprise me if MI-whomever wasn’t a major target of the NSA. Update: Guess that would be where Americans were involved.

An excerpt of a letter to Dodd from an irate member of Wilton, CT, town government…

(snip)

“I am a member of the Wilton DTC. I wrote a resolution to have our troops out of Iraq by the end this year and it was passed unanimously. When Ned spoke here in Wilton about two weeks before the election, DTC members who had previously been leaning to Lieberman told me that they were surprised to find that Ned was a moderate after all. Two Lieberman supporters then and there said they would vote for Ned. My point is that we who voted for Ned are not wild lefties, but more of the Adlai Stevenson, Howard Dean, Chris Dodd type.

I believe that if you really examine Joe’s record and votes, you’ll find a pattern that is immoderate and antagonistic to the moral values of the Democratic Party. I believe his active role in the foundation and leadership of the DLC amounted to a fifth column and has sabotaged our Party. Now that Joe has told us what he is going to do, it is time for you to take off the gloves and let him have it right in …the famous kisser. Stand up for your Party, your state, and your voters and tell Joe that what he is doing is despicable. I strongly advise you to join Harry Reid, and strip Joe of his Senatorial Charimanships.

That other famous son of Connecticut, Benedict Arnold, was a far abler man than Joe Lieberman could ever hope to be, but when he turned traitor, all that greatness fell away into shame, and even the Brits despised him. Don’t let Joe Turncoat stab the Party in the back and get away unscathed”

Frankly, I’m a bit surprised that Lamont is tracking that high this early. After all, Joe has an 18-year head start for name recognition. And Joe’s numbers have nowhere to go but down. That 6% is about the number I’d expect to see from die-hard Republicans who wouldn’t vote for Al Gore’s running mate if their lives depended on it. He won’t get those folks. The rumor is that he came a-calling, but Joe hid behind the couch and pretended he wasn’t home.

Jane put this link to a WaPo article on the subject in an earlier article.

August 10th, 2006 at 11:02 pm

I’ve been trying to find the article I just read this evening about Dodd (but couldn’t). He certainly comes across as being less than aggressive in asking Lieberman to stand down. He’s quoted as saying something to the effect – I’m here if he wants to talk. It’s not up to me to make him stop. And besides, he’s already made up his mind and won’t change it.

I think Conn voters are expected more effort on Dodd’s part. I’m sure he’s conflicted, but this mess doesn’t reflect well on him for being such an ardent supporter of Lierman.

August 10th, 2006 at 11:04 pm

Give this Lieberman thing a week, people. The Big Dog himself will cut RGJ off at the knees once the focus is off CT.

Waving to fdl! back after a silly travel day and feeling the exhaustion.

I’d be happy to put something together on media relations for the states project (after I sleep for a few days!)

It was quite a push what with sending out the lamont schedules at 2am and juggling camera crews but it was also so very much fun!

and of course wonderful to finally meet Trex in person … (and relieved I got the right quote into that article before the adulation of Trex!)

actually, since you do not recieve your marching orders form the high king overlord of the innertubes (KOS), you can only achieve a secondary rating in the left wing fringe of America haters

I don’t really know what sort of bonus points you get for attending the BLOGOSPHERE and the BLOGTOPIA, but I’m sure the bonus points are multiplied by the number of internets you attend (see skippy for details)

if you want to achieve full left wing fringe status, get thyself in touch with the great overlord blogfather and add the worst of the innertubes to your list

and you might also want to mention that you like cheese, surrendering, and monkeys, just to shore up your credentials

August 10th, 2006 at 11:53 pm

hi everybody! was really busy w/ work and then on vacation for 10 days. and just arrived to the Lamont VICTORY!!!
as a matter of fact, i just flew into LAX a mere 28 hours ago with 20 teenage boys (a soccer team) and 31 other various family members. contrary to what alberto Gonzales is saying right now on charlie rose, approx. 10 hours before this PLOT was revealed to the public) there were NO SPECIAL MEASURES being taken. we had bottles and bottles of various liquids in our take on and customs at Heathrow and LAX were VERY relaxed. …hmmmmm….

August 10th, 2006 at 11:57 pm

not what one would expect given the comments about how this plot was so well known and being followed so closely. off topic i know, forgive me. i am glad we got in under the wire though. i’m afraid you’d all be seeing me on CNN right now if they’d tried to take away my Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint Soap.

OT-those of you living where there are Albertson’s markets on the west coast may already be aware, but the company is closing their union staffed stores and selling them to-themselves! The new stores are Bristol Farms stores and they are non-union. Union workers have been pink slipped in Ca. already, with more on the way. Meanwhile, the CEO will receive a buyout (that includes the cash to pay the taxes on it) of $105million.
Let’s face it, it will never get easier.

Thanx for the head’s up – cause my Albertson’s has a Starbucks that I hit each mornin’ – and tomorrow will be my very last visit I’ll be sure to give that sweet kid a great big tip and fond farewell and my card so he can count on me for a great reference. Aghhhhhh – its Darth Cheney’s world and we just keep on the bitter disillusionment path. aghhhhhh!

I can hardly take it for real…and why are we, the americans who don’t usually do suicide bombs or carry shoes full of explosives, being asked to strip and board without carry-ons? Was it not Pakistanis who are said to be the culprits? If they are the suspects then why do we, the innocent, have to pay with long lines and suspicious looks and guns all around us…it is much ado about nothing…I will not fly for a long while…

Congratulations on your ascendancy into the hautest of tons, Lordly One. But in a dark, cobwebby corner, the WSJ editorial staff is chanting incantations over a cauldron of Uppity-Dino Spray. Keep clear of aerosol cans, my liege.

On another subject dear to the heart of this one-time college teacher, the NYT notes that the meddlesome Feds are sinking their claws into higher education. “A federal commission’s report calls for standardized tests, federal monitoring of quality and financial aid changes.”

I was wondering why, until I read this: “All the panel members expressed unanimity on some points, including that the report correctly identified critical challenges like . . . holding institutions more accountable for students who drop out or graduate with few skills.”

Yeah. I get it now.

As for the latest BE AFRAID, PUNY MORTALS!!! airport alert, I was reading Mr. Gilliard and posted this:

“No liquids allowed on the plane. Dick Cheney & Mike Chertoff want you to p*ss yourself right here.”

The Rubber Pants Republicans.

I have been thinking about this, and now I’m wondering if the Latex Industry has captured the Repub Party from Big Oil?

We have the Rubber Pants (”Be afraid! Be very afraid”) Repubs…

And the Rubber Pockets (in their hand-tailored suits, so they can steal soup) Repubs…

And the Rubbers Lead to AIDS (anti-education, pro-ignorance) Repubs…

And the Should’ve Used A Rubber (cause they don’t wanna pull out of Iraq now!) Repubs…

Or should that be the Rubber Hammer (cause everything looks like a nail to them, but for all the whomping they’ve done in the last five years we’re not getting much constructed) Repubs?

Until recently, despite being a solid Lamont supporter, I had a modicum of respect for Lieberman as an old Democratic war horse, even though he sometimes seemed to be a Republican Trojan Horse. No more. He has become the very personification of Rove/Coultergeist Republicanism with his shameful attacks on Ned and a majority of the Democratic Party, equating us with terrorists. He can go rot in hell.

Boy, I’m with you on this one. Naked ambition is unattractive, isn’t it?

I’m very eager to hear how this is playing in Connecticut.

Watching him tonight on the Colbert clips, he has become a self-serving, self-righteous sack of shit.

It got the same play worldwide these latest guys are getting. But it amounted to no terrorism charges or convictions. Just a bunch of Pakistani’s deported. Don’t get me going on the latest terrorist sweep in Toronto. This is about pumping up the base for Leiberman, Bush, Blair and the Global War on Terra. I’m on Terra’s side, all due respect.

Oh, I’m quite sure the degree of manipulation is mindboggling, and certainly we’ve seen a lot more of cases that develop like the Miami 7 is doing, but my point here, and the thread that seems to connect this week’s case and the MNNK affair, is the snatching up of possibly legitimate cases prematurely in order to give BushCo something to crow about, or to drown out something else they don’t want us to hear. The evident bogosity of some terrorist files shouldn’t cause us to disparage the very idea of an actual plot any more than a discovered plot somewhere means that every posse with a wild notion is a real, operational terrorist cell.

MNN Khan had apparently flipped, and begun sending messages to his contacts in Al Qaeda that were leading to their incrimination. In the main part of the summary of Cole’s article, we see how bad information discipline in the service of Bush politics led to a case that turned out to be much weaker than it might have been:

The appearance of Khan’s name in the New York Times on Aug. 2 caused the British to have to swoop down on the London al-Qaeda cell to which he was speaking. As it was, five of them heard about Khan’s arrest and immediately fled. The British got 13, but it was early in their investigation and they had to let five go or charge them with minor offenses (such as immigration irregularities). On Tuesday, the British charged eight of them.

When the British made their arrest, the Bush administration announced that among those captured was Abu Eisa al-Hindi, also known as Abu Musa al-Hindi (both are noms de guerre).

The British, especially MI5 and Home Secretary David Blunkett, had not wanted his name made public, and were furious at all of the detailed information being given out to the public by the Bush administration or in consequence of its revelations. For some reason, the British seem to have feared that the naming of Abu Eisa al-Hindi would complicate the case against him. The Times of India reports that Abu Musa (or Abu Eisa) al-Hindi’s real name is Dhiron Barot. He is one of the eight charged in London on Tuesday. He is from a Hindu family, but converted to Islam at age 20 and got pulled into jihadi activities in Kashmir (about which he published a book). He was the one who cased the financial institutions in the U.S. for al-Qaeda. The story of Barot, like that of Richard Reid, shows that al-Qaeda isn’t mainly about Islam per se, it is a political-religious ideology that can attract non-Muslims.

Likewise, Pakistani Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat was livid that Khan’s name and other details had turned up in the press.

That seems to be where things stand.

Once the first hints of a big story are dropped, as Tom Ridge did back in 2004, diligent reporters are going to try to sniff out the rest and, as Cole points out in the article, officials driven to the what-the-hell point just might then let something slip that for sure blows up the whole case. Blabbing about a serious case for such childishly political reasons is likely to get a fellow or a service on the this-close-to persona non grata list; remember, the US financial institution stuff was just a throw-in because the old files were on Khan’s laptop. The main part of the case was about London or the UK, and what Al Qaeda might have been planning there, whatever it was.

I rather suspect, now that I think about it, that having RBC come out of hiding and start talking his national security bullshit was a signal to UK to grab what they could before the real leaking started. Maybe at some point UK told US, “Next time at least give us a fucking hint.”

There is a grand square in the astrological universe in cardinal signs…that means there is no “give” anywhere, everyone wants their own way and refuses to budge…but at the same time there is great change in power happening…and great resistance to this changing of power…forces are being set in motion now and we will see strong action Nov 8-9 that relates to this week…Saturn is opposong Neptune (exact Aug 31st) and it is a milestone marker in human events…look back to Feb 8th 05 to see the seeding of events that happenend this week…

August 11th, 2006 at 1:54 am

Ah, Spiderpaws, that seems to explain a lot. It touches on poor Joe Lieberman’s issues, and other stuff. Neat. Thank you very much.

August 11th, 2006 at 1:58 am

Oboyoboyoboy, sleepy as I be, I can tell I’ve got doubleTrex to catch up on (and the quick scroll down this’un’s tipped me off to boocoodles of snark)!

Okay, opening IE puts me in NYT, so looky was snagged me first this AM:

The main (three-column) headline screams

Shades of Al Qaeda Seen in Terror Plot

but then there’s the main editorial:

. . .
It comes like a punch to the gut, at times like these, when our leaders blatantly use the nation’s trauma for political gain. We never get used to this. It never feels like business as usual.

On Wednesday, when the administration already knew that British agents were rounding up suspects in what they believed was a plot to blow up planes en route to the United States, Vice President Dick Cheney had a telephone interview with reporters to discuss the defeat of Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut in a Democratic primary. Mr. Cheney went off on a rather rambling disquisition, but its main point was clear: In rejecting Mr. Lieberman, who supported the war in Iraq, the Democrats were encouraging “the Al Qaeda types.” Within the Democratic ranks, the vice president added, “there’s a significant body of opinion that wants to go back – I guess the way I would describe it is sort of the pre-9/11 mind-set, in terms of how we deal with the world we live in.”

The man who beat Mr. Lieberman, Ned Lamont, lives in Greenwich, a suburb full of commuters who work in New York high-rise buildings. They are completely aware of the way international terrorism can come crashing down on an ordinary family, leaving the survivors stunned and bereft. A dozen of their neighbors died at the World Trade Center. They will never be able to go back to a “pre-9/11 mind-set.”

But that did not seem to deter Mr. Lieberman from scoring a cheap sound bite yesterday. Leaving Iraq, as Mr. Lamont advocates, “will be taken as a tremendous victory by the same people who wanted to blow up these planes in this plot hatched in England,” he said. “It will strengthen them and they will strike again.”

Here is what we want to do in the wake of the arrests in Britain. We want to understand as much as possible about what terrorists were planning. To talk about airport security and how to make it better. To celebrate what worked in the British investigation and discuss how to push these efforts farther. It would be a blessed moment in modern American history if we could do that without turning this into a political game plan.

Ms. Collins, if you’ve become FDL-addicted enough to have made it more than 300 comments into this tread, may I just say …

“AMEN!”

Can someone please smite this idiot? President remains eager to cut entitlement spending

risking a blockquote here…

The new Treasury secretary, former Goldman Sachs chief Henry M. Paulson Jr., has made it clear that a major reason he took the job is to tackle the rising cost of government health and Social Security spending, which he described last week as “the biggest economic issue facing our country.”

Shouldn’t a Treasury Secretary be able to calculate how much we’re spending in a war-of-choice in Iraq, versus Social Security? “biggest economic issue” my left buttock.

August 11th, 2006 at 5:00 am

OS, would you mind pouring me another cuppa that marvelous “peace peace peace” blend you had yesterday, please ma’am? I really need it.

Already this morning, I’ve Done a Mad, Bad Thing. Catching up on these two TRex threads got me all cranked up to the point where, about 90 minutes ago, I hit Send on the following ill-considered email to a certain Senate staffer . . .

Hello again, Brent.

You can imagine my reaction when I asked the phone-answering lady whether Our Beel has endorsed Ned Lamont and called for ex-Dem Joe Lieberman’s ouster from all committees and other Democratic posts, and she told me that, “No, Sen. Nelson hasn’t released a statement on that … because he’s focused on his own campaign.”

Focused on his own campaign? Focused on his own campaign? He’s worried about Alligator Bag, he’d have me to believe? The Baker-Actee-to-be that he’s leading by, oh, what is it — 40 points? — by now?

A real pip, your boss.

Okay. By now I’m resigned to the fact that we mere VOTERS can’t pull his head outta where he’s stowed both it and what passes for his spine, but maybe you can do him the service. Maybe you can slip this to him:

http://politicalwire.com/archi….._lost.html

August 10, 2006

Most Democrats Glad Lieberman Lost

A new Zogby Interactive poll found that 79% of Democrats nationwide were happy Sen. Joe Lieberman was defeated by Ned Lamont in Connecticut’s Senate primary. “Just 12% said they were not pleased with the results of the primary, which riveted political junkies across the nation. Another 10% of Democrats said they were not sure what to think.”

In addition, 71% of Democrats were disappointed in Lieberman’s decision to continue his campaign as an independent.

Okay, one last request for you, Brent, because I did honestly enjoy and appreciate our phone chat the other day. Every once in a while, I’ll get a letter or email from Beel apparently in response to some contact I’ve made with you guys. I have to say “apparently” because these always arrive weeks or months after-the-fact, and like the most recent one, have no subject-line or, if email, signature, and are composed of such abstract, one-size-fits-all bloviage as to be completely worthless. All they do is make a bad impression worse.

So, please — for Beel’s own sake — code my “account” for “no mo’ robo-responses,” okay? I much prefer silence to content-free BS, and you don’t want me any more disgusted with him than I already am. (Joe can testify to what befalls pols who disgust my friends and me. Ahem.)

Thank you again,
Lotus

Oh well. Maybe “Chicago Rules” Peterr will absolve me . . .

That way he can read the original, if he likes, but understand it’s not directed at HIM. (See suin’s good communication guidelines)

I have had to do things like this many times, including some real doozies here at fdl, because of being a hothead a little too quick with that submit key.

Adie, sure — but think twice about whether you really want to . . .

August 11th, 2006 at 5:46 am

I know a college kid who is working in one of those congressional offices. He tells me that when the phones are ringing off the hook they keep track of pro and con only. Well spoken callers who stay calm get more airtime and have a chance that their message might be passed along. Screamers get eye rolls and labeled as whackos. As for letters, when the guy (in this particular office) who is responsible for reading and responding gets tired he disposes of the remaining pile in circular file. Since then, I’ve stuck with phone calls.

Oh and I spy tommy yum in the house; thank you for the new song, and all of the other ones too! Hot is even more fun now!

Lotus, this is one of the early pieces. of calligraphy. I used the Metz Pontifical as a model.

Ooo, Kludge, sorry about those nightmares. I’m having strong Twining’s Irish Breakfast — no milk, no lemon, no lumps — if you’d care to partake.

TEA? You guys are drinking TEA ?? Am I the only one out here cooling down with some icy-chilled white bordeaux?

Oh. The timezone thing. I forgot. Carry on, and good morning to you ALL!

Charlie Savage in the Globe -

…”In Connecticut, two days after he narrowly lost the Democratic primary to an antiwar challenger, Senator Joseph I. Lieberman was among the first politicians to release a statement on the foiled terror plot yesterday morning. Lieberman, a Democrat who voted for the war and is now running as an independent to keep his seat, reminded Connecticut that “we are in a war against a brutal enemy that intends to attack us . . . in the most indiscriminate way.”

But political newcomer Ned Lamont, who defeated Lieberman by criticizing the senator’s support for the war, countered that the British plot underscores why the United States needs to “change course,” stand up to the Bush administration, and start “fighting for our security in a rational, serious way.”

“We need to focus on our security, on apprehending Osama bin Laden and other terrorist leaders, and on building a credible, effective foreign policy with our allies . . . rather than being bogged down in a war than is harmful to our security,” Lamont said in a statement.”…

beard5, that is very COOL!

Even more than the extremely beautiful letters, I love the scrolling vine arabesques. That would be some design-influence from the Arab world, when it was keeping lit the lamp of scholarship during Europe’s relatively nasty Dark Ages, eh?

Yeah! Let’s here it for COSPLAY!
(Costume play, though that phrase has a bit of a *naughty* cache here…)

Your friend should check out any books on color by Yoshioka-sensei, a dyer who has recreated all the Heian natural dyes as described in literature from the period, and the ways in which they were combined in layers of kimono. If she wants to contact me, by all means tell her to do so, and I will try and forward some websites….

Medaka, based on possibly uniformed opinion, just looking at lots of historical examples, I think the scrolling vine on that style is an offshoot from the earlier Romanesque style from Northern Europe. Possibly from the Celtic influence, as it moved south. The Islamic/Byzantine influence really shows up in later Italian manuscripts, and moves north from there. But again, that’s still a layman’s (rather than experts) view of it so far. My opinions may change as I find more stuff out there.

CBL, good catch on the post at Gilliard’s. I’m sure the republican staffer responsible will come back with “But it’s just a joke, don’t you people have a sense of humor?”

Doing okay here, Operating System (sometimes I just can’t say “old Sow”, ya know?)….

Broiling, sweltering intense heat, up to 36 degrees C today with 70-plus percent humidity. I’m drinking a good three liters of liquids in the daytime (non-alcoholic!), need aircon to sleep, which goes off in the morning then on again around 4pm just to deal ….

That makes sense, and a better scholar than I would do a study comparing Celtic, Romanesque, Roman, Arabic and Indian scrolling vine motifs and how they all, er, intertwined. If anyone knows of any sort of design-scholarship out there, do please give a holler….

Some bad things have been happening in the White House recently. Really bad things, worse even than felacio in the Oval Office. We’re talking felonies, federal offenses. Hanging offenses. And White House officials are scurrying about trying to save their asses. Consider this from yesterday’s LA Times:

The Bush administration has drafted amendments to the War Crimes Act that would retroactively protect policymakers from possible criminal charges for [war crimes, especially violations of Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions].

Never mind Article I Section 9 of the U.S. Constitution: “No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.” Or Article VI: “This Constitution, and the laws of the United States which shall be made in pursuance thereof; and all treaties made, or which shall be made, under the authority of the United States [e.g., the Geneva Conventiions], shall be the supreme law of the land; and the judges in every state shall be bound thereby, anything in the Constitution or laws of any State to the contrary notwithstanding.”

Per that LA Times article, BushCo officials seek to legitimize the just-giving-orders excuse:

Interrogation practices “follow from policies that were formed at the highest levels of the administration,” said a fourth attorney, Scott Horton. “The administration is trying to insulate policymakers under the War Crimes Act.”

They are trying to circumvent justice, and progressives must join with American patriots across the political spectrum to prevent this shameful attack on law and order. If they succeed in covering themselves after the fact in this case, they will be emboldened and none of us will be safe in our homes. We must bring these people to justice, now.

August 11th, 2006 at 6:14 am

Apparently the Feast of the Epiphany has been moved to August 10. Not only does the DCCC blog have a timeline up on Bush exploitation of the terrorist arrests, but check out the comment:

Q: How does one dispose of explosive liquids ?

A: Pour them all into a big vat in the middle of an airport.

That roar you hear is scales falling from the eyes of a multitude. G’day.

Good points, Anon, and thanks. One little clear-up on Art.I Sec.9

“No bill of attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.”

though. This ex post facto language refers to criminalizing a behavior after the fact, not to de-criminalizing it (as Abu dearly hopes to here).

from buzzFlash:

“What Dems Can Learn From Richard Nixon About Campaigning During a Stupid War
“Never has so much military and economic and diplomatic power been used so ineffectively, and if after all of this time, and all of this sacrifice, and all of this support, there is still no end in sight, then I say the time has come for the American people to turn to new leadership not tied to the mistakes and policies of the past.”

OS, would you mind pouring me another cuppa that marvelous “peace peace peace” blend you had yesterday, please ma’am? I really need it.

Already this morning, I’ve Done a Mad, Bad Thing. Catching up on these two TRex threads got me all cranked up to the point where, about 90 minutes ago, I hit Send on the following ill-considered email to a certain Senate staffer . . .

[snip]

Oh well. Maybe “Chicago Rules” Peterr will absolve me . . .

You know, lotus, when a staffer on the Hill sorts through the mail, it all starts to sound alike after a while. Given that you’ve had some direct contact with Brent, the tone of the snark may win you some points for style.

Especially on a Friday.

Using actual poll numbers was a nice touch, too.

But no absolution here. I don’t see much of a need for it, myself. The letter sounds more like a prophet than a sinner.

Huh, doesn’t matter. Keep up the great work!
