According to ABC News:
According to a close Lieberman adviser, the President’s political guru, Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman camp with a message straight from the Oval Office: "The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do."
Lieberman + Bush = Loser
November Elections + Bush = ?!? for the GOP
Therefore, Rove + Lieberman = An Attempt at Job Insurance.
Any questions?

NED!
g’mornin, reverend.
Imagine a picture of me looking surprised.
FITZ
You all have NO idea how hard it was to be in CT working on the campaign and not being able to post to FDL during break time. The GD hotel high speed ate up all of our comments and sent them into Lieberland.
Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman
I’m surprised it took so long. Joey’s number was already on Rove’s speed-dial.
That speaks volumes… at a loud volume.
Considering the way the bush love child ran his campaign I thought Rove already was helping.
“Whatever we can do…” means, “we’ll fix the voting machines in the general election so that they produce the ‘correct’ result”.
I’m shocked it didn’t happen yesterday, last night’s result almost restores my faith in the electoral process.
Anyway, the gloves are now off…
How dense a bubble do they inhabit anyway? Bush is at about 20% approval here in CT. If Rove/Bush are seen anywhere near this thing, Joe is DOA.
I’ll be back in a while. Gotta go buy a firewire-DV cable so I can download some video from my new camcorder and hopefully make something nice.
Ned needs to stay off of small airplanes. I am 100% serious. Wellstone?
I have a list of other Congress people who died in “accidental” air crashes. It is revealing.
The good news: we are threatening Power. The bad news: we are threatening Power.
…and, by “the boss,” I guess we can assume Chimpy not Bruce Springsteen?
;)
That, of course, is magical thinking. Pouring resources into supporting Lieberman might affect other races, if they weren’t going to be contested at the same time.
I find this math to be very confusing…
let’s see… Liarman has thus rec’d the support of Bloomberg, Rove/Bush and Ken Mehlman…
wasn’t HoJo just sayin’ yesterday, “I AM (so) a Democrat!”
a life preserver Karl ? you shouldn’t have, yes, Haddasah told me it arrived last night – Senator Salazar is admiring it as we speak . . .
http://www.beautifuliron.com/i…..rgjpeg.JPG
Rove’s and Bush’s gestures are so blatant, no? The Republican White House will campaign for a former Democratic Vice-Presidential candidate? Amazing!
Ha! Karl just made a liar out of Sean Smith. Last night on late night Tweety, he was taunting Smith, asking if he’d gotten a call from the President, and if Bush would be endorsing him.
Smith said he hadn’t heard from the White House, and didn’t expect to. You could tell he was uncomfortable, and afterwards Mike Barnicle told Tweety he was trying to get Smith’s goat.
More importantly, Smith would NOT say whether Joe plans to endorse ANY Democratic candidate in CT. He was given multiple opportunities. I was like, WTF? He’s toast.
Good afternoon Teddy. Thanks for getting and posting my franticness. What an awesome weekend plus.
This was a moral victory in every sense of the word.
Isn’t it interesting, that 3 polls had Lamont ahead by 10 points, and the actual ‘result’ was only 4 points?
Lesson learned for the general election in November: FIGHT EVIL. THEY WILL TRY TO STEAL THIS ONE TOO.
Christy, I just want you and Jane to know how much I appreciate your efforts and your leadership. But, most importantly, your eloquence.
I’ve mostly lurked for many months now, but you and the regulars here give me great hope and pleasure.
I honestly don’t know why he doesn’t just declare himself a Republican, shove the other guy out of the way, and run against Ned on the up-and-up in November. Well, actually, I do know why, but sheesh. Does Little Joey Two-Times imagine that Dems of any stripe in Connecticut are going to stand by while he turns into a de facto Rove candidate? And they vote for his dumb ass in the fall?
Incidentally, I’m thinking of something like this for a bumper sticker:
Ned Lamont
Democrat for Senate
Fair and Square
What do you think?
From LindaR’s report (previous thread) of her chat with the young man who answers DiFi’s phones, we learn that he asked her:
Did I get an email asking me to?
Why, because citizens are no longer allowed to communicate via the tooobz in Senator Stevens’ TeleComPerfect World? These DINOs really are DINOSAURS. What the hell would be wrong with getting an email from someone urging you to call your Senator?
Interestingly, this question has been added to Isadore Intern’s script within the last 20 minutes — he didn’t ask me that at 10am!

Rove + Lieberman = Crazy Malicious
Oh, and our Russ just checked in:
“I congratulate Ned Lamont on his primary victory and enthusiastically endorse his candidacy. In this primary election, Democrats in Connecticut showed the Washington establishment what Democrats and Progressives all over the country are demanding – elected officials that stand up for the core American values we all share. From fighting for universal health care to demanding an Iraq policy that makes sense and puts our focus back on the terrorist networks that wish to do us harm, the Connecticut primary was about the core issues Americans talk about around their kitchen table every evening.
“I have a lot of admiration for Joe Lieberman. He’s a fine man and he helped me a great deal on campaign finance reform. But Ned Lamont’s positions on the critical issues facing our country today are much closer to mine. We need more leaders like Ned Lamont in Washington and I look forward to working with him on a wide range of issues in the U.S. Senate.”

I am posting the text below from a Kos diary. Please take the steps below immediately! Thanks.

Not only should all Democratic senators endorse Ned Lamont today, but if Lieberman continues to flout the will of his own party in his own state, they should publicly support stripping him of all his senate committee assignments immediately. No more playing nice, waiting it out, or letting Lieberman walk all over the wishes of his constituents. The voters of Connecticut have spoken. The Democrats have spoken.
If you have one or two Democratic senators, please call him/her/them ASAP. You can call the U.S. Capitol toll-free at 1-888-355-3588, or you can find their direct contact info by going to http://Senator’s last name].senate.gov/. Phone numbers are usually located at the bottom of the page or on the “Contact” page.
(What I have noticed after making the calls myself is that most Democratic senators are supporting Ned Lamont, but none is saying anything about stripping Lieberman of his committee assignments. We have to get this meme out there ASAP.)
Please follow me over the flip for some sample scripts:
mariva’s diary :: ::
If your Senator has endorsed Lamont:
I am a constituent of Senator [Senator’s last name]’s and a loyal registered Democrat. I want to thank Senator [Senator’s last name] for supporting the Democratic candidate that the voters of Connecticut nominated, Ned Lamont. I also want to add that since Lieberman has chosen to run as an Independent, that means he is no longer a Democrat, no longer loyal to our party, and should be stripped of all his committee assignments immediately. I urge Senator [Senator’s last name] to support stripping Lieberman of all his committee assignments immediately. Thank you for your consideration.
If your Senator has not yet endorsed Lamont, or has endorsed Lieberman:
I am a constituent of Senator [Senator’s last name]’s and a loyal registered Democrat. I urge Senator [Senator’s last name] to support the Democratic candidate that the voters of Connecticut nominated, Ned Lamont. In addition, since Lieberman has chosen to run as an Independent, that means he is no longer a Democrat, no longer loyal to our party, and should be stripped of all his committee assignments immediately. I urge Senator [Senator’s last name] to support stripping Lieberman of all his committee assignments immediately. Thank you for your consideration.

I also want to add that since Lieberman has chosen to run as an Independent, that means he is no longer a Democrat, no longer loyal to our party, and should be stripped of all his committee assignments immediately. Don’t you have to wonder who threw Joe under the bus by leaking this? Did Sean Smith get his walking papers, and now he’s getting even? Did Rove plant this in the papers himself, trying to get Joe out of the race ASAP so he’ll be out of the news and not reminding Republicans in Congress that Bush is the “kiss of political death?” So many possibilities…so much imagination…

OK K– No. HoJo’s calling himself an “ID” (Independent Dem), even tho it’s all about his ego. :)
I like the BBC’s take on this:
Defeated Lieberman to run alone
Joe Lieberman, defeated candidate for the Democratic senatorial nomination in Connecticut
Voters made Lieberman pay for his support for the Iraq war
Senator Joe Lieberman has filed papers to stand as an independent in mid-term elections, a day after losing the Democratic Party’s nomination.
Well I see Lieberman messed up this website again, heh.
According to their DC offices, neither Patty Murray nor Maria Cantwell
have made public statements in support of Ned Lamont.
I strongly urged that they do so quickly to demonstrate party unity.
I also urged they use their influence on Harry Reid to have Lieberman’s committees reassigned,
since Lieberman has turned his back on the Democratic Party.
Please call The Capital Switchboard – 888-355-3588.
Let them hear your voice.
Been in a meeting since noon – am never going to catch up!
If this Rove thing is true, there needs to be another figure on that float – Karl Rove.

Three ring circus indeed!
Rove’s playbook is outdated and won’t work anymore, for the times they have a-changed. As progressives have grown increasingly fluid and strategically sophisticated, right-wingers have only grown more white-knuckled.
Joe summed it up beautifully yesterday when he declared, “I haven’t changed. Events around me have.” No duh. It’s called life as opposed to ossification.
If Lieberman actually enjoys getting his ass kicked, I’m all for his new campaign. Let’s do it again.
Congrats to everyone. Thank God, it’s a new day in America.

While I’m not surprised by this, I really don’t understand what is going on. Who is doing what to whom…..Christy, the weirdness is that it could go either way! Rove throwing Joe under the bus seems llikely, but also Bush drawing a line in the sand for his policies and wanting to throw the guy a bone seems possible, too. Weird. I really don’t get it.
Who did the very cool graphic?
Congratulations to Ms. Hamsher, Ms. Smith, Pach, and all others for a job very well done. And good work to Sheriff Wilson for manning the checkpoint in what seems to have been some rather active comment days. A few misc. thoughts:
1. The Kiss float was/is wonderful. I suggest a 2nd float. It is a man standing there. Small in stature, and a bit of over-sized head. The face of course, is JoJo. He wears a brilliant red coat (heh) and a 3-point hat also of bright red. Beneath, a simple sign reads:
Joe
Benedict Arnold
Lieberman
2. TV commercial: the following, due to high cost, probably isn’t pragmatic. But still….do ya’ll remember, in the months right after 9-11, the commercial which repeated “I Am An American”? Make one for bloggers. Some Dr., stands there in his smock, his name/hometown underneath as he says “I am a Blogger”…a welder stands there, same lines….a grandma at the grocery store, same lines. You get the drift. I think the bloggers need to reach out to many Americans. Show them that we’re NOT crazed folk, but decent people like they are.
Ghostman
I do wonder why newsfolks and pundits don’t tthink Lieberman may split the REPUBLICAN vote?
Every bit of weight, public or otherwise, the Repubs and the Administration throw behind Joe both increases the chance of a Republican vote AND decreases the chance of a Democratic one.
I am less worried about him hurting the Dems, and wondering more if he will aid Lamont by siphoning off more from the right.
I suspect Rove, himself, leaked it… I’m thinkin’ that the repugs see their best chance as having as liberal an opposition as possible… and the Dems, they figure, in chaos…
but they are wrong…
I’m all for kicking RGjoe’s ass again in November, but the $$$ would be better spent defeating other BushCo enablers — other GOPers — elsewhere, as well as in Connecticut.
Why should Democrats have to spend another dime to defeat RGJoe again? Why should Ned?

I totally agree. These people are murderers.
the time to celebrate ned lamont’s win is over. we all need to do our part (however large or small) and keep up the pressure on Dems to publicly denounce Lieberfool and fully endorse Lamont.
If the Dems are only going to go so far as publicly “support” Lamont, then it will be a harder road to a win.
They must be pushed to puch Lieberman out. Make no mistake, this week is critical.

Rove is also counting on the Dems to spend time, energy and money focusing on the CT race – yes, it IS a “shiny keys” move!
I was amiss yesterday in not first congratulating the people of CT on their victory.
First off, Joe isn’t a third party candidate, he is a shadow repug candidate whose come out of the shadows. And that is how Dem’s should be portraying him and his run. I might think Ralph Nader is a narcissistic asshole, but he at least represented a different ideology; Joe, although proving to be as narcissistic, not so much.
I still expect him to pull out, but if he doesn’t (or before he does), no one should use the word Democratic in speaking about him, but should use the word Republican, and should never agree with the idea that he represents some third party when he represents Chimpy Republicanism.
The Emperor of Joe-Mockery, our Sheriff *ilson! All hail the MODS!

I hope that it has penetrated the DLC Dems’s brains that Joe will caucus *with the Republicans* if Rove steals this election for him.
Hope at 85, I was thinking exactly that.
Has anyone else noticed that the NY Times online has yet to post a picture of this guy, um, Ned Lamont? (Not to mention that their headlines have all begun with “Lieberdork” something or other.) I just wrote web-editors asking why, and I don’t expect a response.
Oh, and yes, Ned, stay off of small planes.

Congrats to CT. Congrats and sympathies for Lamont. The job being left for conscientious people who want to do a good job has been made horribly overwhelming by the actions and inactions of right wing extremists, like Joe Lieberman became, and the failure of the people and institutions throughout what had been our government’s system of checks and balances.
OTOH – he’ll have people like Maxine Waters and Russ Feingold and thankfully they will finally have some backup.
Funny enough with all the gaps in the MSM, but I am suprised that they do not talk about what happens to the hard working Dems who work for Joeloser who will up an leave him since he is jilting them.

*ilson, it’s like shooting fish in a barrel, toying with the clueless Boltin’ Joe campaign. If nothing else, this primary showed we are 100 miles ahead in toobz savvy alone. That they didn’t even think to corner domain names until after it was too late is a big frickin’ revelation to me.
I agree with EPU. (of course, being omniscient, he already knew that.)
We need to hang the big ‘R’ on Joe. Tie it to him like a noose. Same as Coulter, tie them together.
Openly accepting support from Karl Rove would be the Kiss of Bush, er, the kiss of death for Lieberman, and he probably knows that. But he may not be above accepting some kind of back-door assistance. Finding evidence that he is accepting same sounds like a good job for investigative journalism. What? Journalists don’t investigate any more? I guess the bloggers will just have to do it.
Ghostman, I really like your #2 idea of a blogger ad at some point down the road.
I also still want to get a bunch of handkerchiefs embroidered with George W. Bush to hand out to Repubs after the election.
Mr. Dodd continuted. “And while I may disagree and regret the choice they made, I have great respect for the choice they made,” he said. “And so this morning, I’m endorsing Ned Lamont for the United States Senate.”
Notably, Mr. Dodd said he would not call on Mr. Lieberman to withdraw from the race, saying only “I regret that decision, but that was his decision to make.” (”If he wants to talk to me, I’m here to talk,” Mr. Dodd added.)
I’m Peterr, I’m a blogger, and I approve this message.
(And it doesn’t sound terribly expensive to produce, though the airing of it might be real $$.)
Ghostman, that’s a genius idea for a commercial. Starting on basic cable, like comedy central or A&E, will be pretty much all you need. It will get picked up by people like Stewart and Olbermann, maybe even Tweety, and shown over and over?
Peterr @ 98
You don’t have to air it. Just put it on YouTube. The TOOBZ are the future man! The old print and broadcast media are for the dinosaurs.
RE: The Rove Endorsement of Senaor Lieberman:
It was my understanding that this leaked quote from Rove was sent before the primary, intended to be secret.
What Christy was suggesting is the possibility that someone from the Lieberman campaign staff leaked it now for some reason. Or that Rove leaked it now for some machiavellian purpose. I don’t think anyone is saying that Rove sent this after Senator Lieberman lost the primary.
I just saw in the last post the “soft on security” meme. I think that we should try to counter this with something like “Stupid on defense”. The primary example is, of course, Iraq. Call it the “no” war: No WMD, no al Qaeda, no 911, no plan, no way out. There are many others. North Korea has the bomb and is testing missiles and George Bush and his Republicans are doing what exactly? And how are we coming with Iran? And isn’t Afghanistan getting worse? And how about Lebanon? And here at home, has anyone seen a bigger or more ineffective agency than the Department of Homeland Security? FEMA of Katrina fame was part of this monstrosity. This is the agency that short changes New York City so that sheriffs in No Name, New Mexico or wherever can put together SWAT teams in case of attack by terrorist armadillos. This is the agency that thinks that Indiana has more high value terrorists targets than Washington DC. How many failures and disasters does it take to realize that these guys wouldn’t know “security” if it kicked them in the ass?
Kurt – brilliant! The toobz!
Did anyone watch the 2 guys who put YouTube together on Charlie Rose last night? It will be repeated here at noon.
Neuro – That’s the thing. Lieberman should NOT be allowed to set the terms of the debate. He is a repug whether he gets overt or covert support. That, and he supports their policies and agenda. We (and that is the universal We which I am allowed to use) should set the terms of the debate – Lamont:Democratic Party; Lieberman; Chimpy Republican Party.
He is not a Democrat – not even in name only any more.
WaPo: Administration pushing to amend 1996 war crimes law. Hopefully the Lamont example will give the Dem’s enough spine to go to the mat against this. Bush, Cheney, Alberto, etc. need to be thinking about their future romance with Bubba.

Ghostman, this idea of yours could have real legs. On this board alone we have ministers, prosecutors, moms and dads, musicians, wirters, man we got every kind of real person here. Just here, not to mention the other blogs. We could ask several people to film a segment and send all the pieces to an editor. IMHO, Youtube will be one venue, but TV is still the place to influence the unplugged.
Meta, I love your idea, too! Hmmm, I smell creativity somewhere, great ideas to help us push this victory forward into November.
another tidbit:
He [Chris Dodd] also said he wouldn’t try to talk Joe out of making an independent run, nor did he imagine many prominent Democrats would. “We all know Joe and like Joe… I think it would be pretty futile having a conversation with Joe, who’s made up his mind.”
Ned Lamont emerged a few minutes later and disagreed. “The Senator has to make up his own mind,” he said, but he added that he knew some Democrats would be urging him [Lieberman] to step aside.
Mommybrain @ 105
I totally agree. I bet we could get a production crew together. And I’ll donate Dr Turtle as “The Doctor” In Uniform, with a doctor coat. The airing money will come if we build it…
pigearth @ 94
This exact question was addressed in the WaPo’s online chat. According to the WaPo’s Charles Babbington, today’s story is the defeat of a three-term Senate incumbent in a PRIMARY. That just doesn’t happen, it’s like a snow storm closing the Panama Canal. Plenty of coverage about Ned and the race, to follow, but not today.
Also wrt the NYT’s, given the narrowness of Ned’s vitory, 4 points, around 11,000 votes out of more than 200,000 cast, their endorsement of Ned looks absolutely huge.
Outside of some small unions, IIRC, the only other endorsements Ned received were from African Americans. It’s in this context that the NYT’s looks pretty damn good to me today.
Think of the universe of Rover’s “boss helping.”
There are SO many ways for W to help. The mind boggles. Not a single one of them involves overt support or another Kiss. For instance, where’s BigTime’s Eleven-Man Egyptian DeathSquad that was headed for a Montana student exchange program and never arrived? What about more confessions about his Iranian training from the Hizbollah fighter captured yesterday and linked directly to the Goldwasser capture? How about teeing up another inadequate response, this time to an East Coast hurricane, or a West Coast quake?
There are all kinds of things BushCo can do to help RGJoe, and these sociopaths have their fingers on all the buttons. That’s why RGJoe needs to get outta the race he lost last night.

If this Rove thing is true, there needs to be another figure on that float – Karl Rove.

It could be very impactful, especially if a very short actual comment was used. Some of the most insightful heartfelt messages that make visceral connections are found here.
Reverend: yeah, I was thinking about the air-time cost as being huge. I just don’t know much at all about all the details of production/airing costs for a commercial.
Airing it on cable channels might be good….cheaper rates? Again, I just don’t know about costs.
Youtube: well…..see, the thing is, I think there’s LOTS of Americans who don’t bother with internet blogs, youtube, etc. They are very good folk, but their world just jusn’t center around internet stuff. You guys here are all very internet savvy. As I’ve said before, I’m about at the end of the line on internet savvy-ness. But theres TONS of Americans out there even behind me in internet knowledge. These folks are already hearing via MSM about those “crazy bloggers” etc. I’m trying to reach those. But youtube might be a good start!

Tony Snow is really flogging the Democrats are supporting terrorism meme. Bigtime …
PressSec Snow is now blathering on MSNBC about how defeat of Lieberman means far left wing is in control of Dems, but he’s already lost the thread of his own “strong statement”. Good thing he talks too much.
But this will be the attack, Dems now controlled by far lefties, and gee, it’s such a shame.
I agree with Ghostman about the tubes vs. cable thing. I just found Youtube 3 months ago. Lots of people don’t know about it. We can post it there and it will get picked up by the news shows but its not the same thing as airing it on TNT. IMHO.

I also agree that YouTube is for the “early adopters” but we need a version for everyone else. That would really broaden the message (and humanize us evil bloggers) to the audience that only hears snippets about how terrible and left wing we are.
I hope I’m not sounding too stuffy on this, but I personally think the float served its purpose, and it should be retired with honor.
Ned can carry this thing without that sort of campy ‘chatter’ any more.
Let him look, act, sound senatorial. He has an incredible, engaging sense of humor – the easy laugh is golden.
NED has earned center stage, and this is a terribly important campaign for a very serious job. Think long and hard before messing with the dignity of his image.
Just sayin’….

Ironranger – Rove’s “real” game is to try and keep TEAM LOSER and ilk in power. It is not hard to figure out.
Don’t imbue Rove or anyone else with powers they don’t have. He is a good marketer with ONE trick. And yes, that trick has worked in the past. That being said, he is not some Machiavelian svengali puppet master controlling the fate of the world at his whim. He is a fallable human being, no more, no less. Twolf – Yes, he was.
I bet Jane and Howie and Steve Audio can at least point us in the right direction to get a “professional” commercial together. If we can put a rootz version on youtube, it may intrigue a professional to donate time to do a pro version.
I think Fred Segal needs to look up the definition of “bipartisanship”. It means *both* parties get some of what they want. It *doesn’t* mean one party has to suck up all the swill the other pours.

You know,*ilson, besides the politics of pork over security which a lot of DHS spending represents, I think it spreads the message of fear which this Administration relies on so much to retain its support. I remember before the 2004 election a mother speaking in a focus group on CSPAN. She was from the middle of Missouri. Her main concern was to protect her children from terrorist attack. It never occurred to her that she and the middle of Missouri were about one billionth on the list of terrorist targets in this country. She was still afraid. I think giving money to a sheriff in Podunk, Missouri to counter nonexistent terrorists threats simply reinforces the climate of fear upon which Bush and company feed.

IMO, the CT Primary vote would not have been nearly as close had Joe not come out very late criticizing Rumsfeld and calling for a “speedy” pullout from Iraq.
All 200,000 plus Dems who voted in CT supported candidates who are now criticizing the President in a time of war. Ned was just criticizing Bush a lot earlier than Joe, that’s why Ned won.
The talking point that wins imo is that the US and Israel are less safe since we invaded and occupied Iraq and Afghanistan.

I’m watching Tony Snow right now. He referred to Lamont supporters as “extremists” and claimed the blogs are hot today. I watched a nutcase Noron Pouron blurb today with a guy who was allowed to just drone on, unchecked, on how Republicans have been responsibly running the economy and national security and are so wonderful and Democrats are determined to wreck their party yada yada yada.
The problem is — they know just how much toast they are if people look at the facts, and they know the anti-incumbant fever is growing.
So, if they can jump to the Dem ship and try to “pre-demonize” the PEOPLE (not even the candidates – but their fellow Americans) who are supporting a pro-national security/anti-world occupation, pro-investigation, pro-lobbyist reform, pro-campaign finance reform, pro-law, pro-Bill of Rights approach to government, they are hoping they can keep it from leaking into the Republican party and the Independent’s consciousness.
Because they KNOW it has a tremendous appeal throughout the moderate center of this country and to the disenchanted youth of this country who can drive a campaign. So, they have taken their failed “fight them over there so you won’t have to fight them here” foreign policy and are trying to apply it domestically. Fight the sensible, responsible, moral government movement in the Democratic Party so we won’t have to fight it here in the Republican Party. geezfreakinlouise
Really – we need Dems the people, not Dems the politicians, to stand up and offer over the challenge to the Republicans: We’re getting rid of our corrupt, inefficient and just plain ‘too wrong for too long’ politicians. Ball’s in your court.
9/11 – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; Katrina – not on theDemocratic Party’s watch; breaking the debt ceiling X times (and can’t even remember now) – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; attacks on Social Security – not by the Democratic Party; authorizing War Crimes – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; massive thefts of VA data – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; increases in American poverty combined with obscene government giveaways to corporations and the wealthiest families in the country – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; medals and rewards for coverups over competency – not on the Democratic Party’s watch; etc.

how out of touch does bush have to be to think he can actually help leiberepublican?
You guys do realize that Chris Dodd is not going to say publicly what he is or is not doing to ease Lieberman out of the race, right? Joe’s big ass ego will kick in if they go after him too hard publicly, so everything is going to happen behind-the-scenes for a while. Cut Dodd and everyone else a little slack and see where things go. We don’t want them sticking the shiv in within the public view. It would be ineffective.
Meta and others: well, I guess you need a co-ordinator, and one with some knowledge of how to do all this. (I’m ignorant on this area). Next, a camera guy….lining up volunteers to appear….filming them….filming may require travel? Or can you splice together many films? (i.e. someone in each city where a volunteer is located films the volunteer and then internet transmits the film to “HQ”?) Then it’s all spliced together?

Interesting theories, all, but my guess is that it’s simpler than the conspiracy. My guess is that George Bush likes Joe, and when Joe lost last night, Bush picked up the phone and said, “Karl! Joe’s in trouble. Whatever he needs done, tell him we’ll do it.” And Karl did.
The kicker is that both Bush and Rove are so delusional that they actually think this will help. Of course the president is incredibly popular; it’s just that some of the polls are scewed. And since they never show the polls to Bush, he probably still thinks he’s the most popular guy in the whole world.
Anyway, that’s my guess.

It’s hard to blame the news for focusing on Lieberman at the moment. He’s a man-bites-dog story right now for several reasons, not the least of which is that he’s an incumbent who got all sorts of party endorsements during a primary and lost anyway.
Agreed. Even the Hartford Courant endorsed Lieberman, despite their coverage of the primary that was often embarrassing to Joe.
Nationalize the ‘Blogger Commercial’ campaign
I have a camera and Final Cut Pro, and I know how to use them. If there are a cast of bloggers from all walks of life who want to cut a commercial with me in the SF bay area, send an email to dem2006 (at) mac [dot] com.

Hmmm. One of Lieberman’s close advisers is leaking. Is this a trial balloon or a shiv? I’m not sure yet. I’m guessing shiv. I think a lot of Lieberman’s advisers are printing up resumes today.

Love the blogger commercial idea. Should we have people in identifiable “career gear” as well, so they don’t have to spell out that they’re ordinary working people? I know Hope mentioned Dr. Turtle in his scrubs, which would be self-explanatory. If we’re doing, say, 30-second spots, then each segment would have to be very brief – so easily identifiable occupations would be helpful.
merciless @ 197
This is an important and accurate point. Remember Stepford Laura on Larry King recently? She blathered on about how all the people she and the President see are so supportive and ask how they can help the Bushes and how appreciative they are about the work the Bushes are doing. These people — the Bushes, not their pre-screened audiences — have NO IDEA they are living in a bubble made up of increasingly wee audiences of $upporter$, military service personnel and their families, American Idol finalists (but only nine of them!) and Secret Service agents and other employees who know to stay on their good side.
There’s a bubble, alright, but you can’t see it when you’re in it!

Sounds right to me. Blogger at the end. Also I love those edited cut-aways where one person says their bit, then it cuts away, to the next person saying the same thing, then the next person syas the next bit, etc. Those kind of spots seem really powerful to me. Gives the image of ’solidarity’. A suggestion for the jar.
For all of those annoying concern trolls out there, try not to think of this as a primary loss. Think of it a term limit. Remember those? You were touting them awhile back as a way to get rid of out-of-touch incumbents.

So now the Republicans find that “flipping” is an honorable thing? Remember Bush disinvited Jeffords from a non-partisan education soiree at the Whitehouse after Jeffords switched in order to shun and punish Jeffords.
Now they find it to be principled for Joe the “flip-flopper”.

To be honest – I am shocked and amazed that more of the country isn’t Stepfordized with the nonstop MSM drivel. It shocks me that so many who only hear the Matt Lauer Loves Anne Coulter segments and the uninterrupted propagandized “we break the law, to follow the law” mantras still have begun to say, “nope, don’t buy it.”
The media doesn’t realize that they are losing their future in the market by selling their current crediblity to a ratings structure that is only about accusational jousting.
I watched Stewart last night and, after having watched the Abizaid & Pace Pauses to Collect Their Thoughts (do I want to look stupid, or look like a liar – stupid, liar, stupid, liar …) I thought I’d seen some of the saddest. Watching GOnzales do the same thing (credit where due – again in response to a McCain question) for an even longer period of time, while he so completely put SOLD to the any remnants of law left in the Dept of Justice – was more heartbreaking than funny. Stewart did a good job – whipping out the muffins he was able to bake while waiting for the answer from The Attorney General of The United States of America, but it is too disturbing to laugh, unless you cry at the same time.

When I mentioned that many other prominent senators have already come out this morning in support of Lamont, he said he would surely pass along my request for her to do the same. OT, there’s no faster way to get Joe to withdraw than for Ned to start calling Joe’s wealthiest donors and reading them the ABC report that Rove offered Joe his “help.” It’s those donors imo that are keeping Dodd, Schumer, HillBill, and others from putting more pressure on Joe than they already are.
meta, no mad vid skillz here, but glad to help if you need backup in the org/writing/whatever needs doing areas.
Leslie, in ya go! Thank you.
Mommybrain @ 105
You could start out even cheaper, KO is always showing these viral videos. Get it up on You Tube, create some buzz, and it will probably get picked up. Plus, fundraise directly for airing the commercial.
Feinstein update, here’s the statement from her Capitol Hill office; it is unwritten but comes directly from the press office:
I asked if there would be a formal written statement, the phone-answerer said she would relay my request to the Senator’s press office, but the Senator is in California. I responded that the SF office says she’s in DeeCee today, and was told that she is not in the DC office today.
Keep pushing, I say.
GrandmaJ @ 244
Yes, yes, yes!
Also the national unity bi-partisan bs has really gotten to me. Call him what he is. A Rubber Stamp Republican.
Joe Lieberman = cut ‘n run anyway Democrat = sore loser.
Another Raw Story headline that came to my attention: White House blasts Dems for Lieberman loss; Soon…
Hilde @ 241
Done! Thank you!
John Casper @ 245
Unfortunately, Joe’s wealthiest donors are totally onboard with the Neocons.
I have no idea how to get Joe to concede and stand down, gracefully or otherwise. But I feel very strongly about Harry Reid et al stripping him of his committee memberships if he does not stand down…and stand down soon.
looseheadprop @ 247
Yesyesyes to both these ideas.

I can vouch that The Nefarious Leslie is strikingly pretty and wholesome-looking (operative word looking). She’d be great as one of the actors!
OT – msnbc says the average worker spends 1.87 hours per day surfing the web. HA! that’s way too low, they should have checked FDL.
Errrm, I have a comment in moderation.
I mentioned that Karl’s Grandfather was allegedly a member of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, which has a notorius name.
It was all in context and made sure to bold the word allegedly
I didn’t make any accusation of Rove being a member of said organization
Thanks

Gotcha, MommyB. Your linky no worky. How to reach you?
Also, been meaning to say for freakin’ ever that your son is the cutest thing on earth. And apparently, the smartest. ha!
twolf1 @ 12:27 pm (#258) – Did they mention why workers were surfing the web? I used to do it quite a bit as part of my job.
LindaR @ 258
Ah, the many babes of FDL.
egregious at 161
Got it! Thanks loads. Will pass it on. ;->
martha @ 140
How about linking it up with MoveOn itself? They have the $$$ and the experience with this sort of thing. Have them do it as an issue advocacy ad during, say, Lamont’s general election run.
Meta,
I’m sending an email to you now.
Adie @ 31
I ain’t egregious even if I am egregious now and again … but I do know a little about jetlag.
1) Going east (losing time) is tougher than going west (gaining time).
2) The day before s/he leaves, she should shift her clocks to the new local time, and sleep per that time. Use a sleeping aid if necessary.
3) En route, continue to sleep per the new local time. Sleeping in steerage class of an airliner sucks, but if it’s all you have, you should make the most of it.
This regimen will reduce but not eliminate jetlag effects. If s/he’s severely affected by jetlag she should schedule so that nothing important is going on for a day or so after arrival.

up soon on MSNBC – “the web lessons learned in that bitter Connecticut primary”
It’s @ 245 and the last line of the first paragraph should read
Sorry, for the bump in the road.
Another great post Christy
Get ready for a nasty nasty fight.
Has anyone noticed the mainstream media calling
Senator Lieberman a moderate!
How can anyone who has been writing op-ed
pieces in the Wall Street Journal supporting
Bush and his war be a moderate?
We used to call them right wingers~
Ned needs to invite Wes Clark to campaign with him so that he can put the national security issue up front. How low can joe go..
Christy Hardin Smith @ 44
My vote is for Sean Smith. He was on Tweety’s special last night and his body language clearly telegraphed he had canned. He didn’t get worked up about the web-site, and he muffed a few softball questions about Lieberman. He is completely checked out.
new thread — Howie!
TeddySanFran @ 261
The Turn of the Shrew?
I believe it was -ck- last night who first made the point that our goal right now is for Joe to withdraw and endorse Ned.
The longer Joe doesn’t withdraw, the bloodier this thing gets for the Senate race and the three key Congressional races in CT
The Democratic party’s connection to its registerd voters is at stake.
Stephen Parrish, CPA @ 251
That’s rich. Why Lieberman lost – i.e. his relationship with lobbyists and neocons, his distain for the electorate, his lack of concern for the Democratic Party – are all playing out in full view, last night and today.
And yet the MSM & Washington establishment is still scratching their heads and wondering why. Actually – it’s clear that they’re all terrified. We certainly got under their skin.
twolf1 @ 269
Given the level of intellectual curiosity about the web they displayed in that last story, I’m not expecting any useful information.
*ileson, have you heard any scuttlebutt re traffic stats at the Connecticut for Lieberman Party website?
Imagine the pressure to deliver that Lamont is under now. What I think is so cool is that I am confident that he can actually do it…that is just the bestest silver lining.
Today I can finally put to rest my disgust at Holy Joe’s ridiculous Clenis scolding. He has finally paid the price for that.
I applaud my senator, Senator Boxer, and await my other senator to follow suit. (She should read Krugman’s latest for inspiration.)
Christy and Jane, you two constantly remind me how fabulous you are and make me shake my head in awe. Thanks to you and to all the others here who gave so much of themselves to pull off this stunning victory. You cannot over-estimate how much it is appreciated.
Next assignment: accurate voting machines!
I love that “bitter Connecticut primary” crap — there’s only one BITTER SORE LOSER!!!

Must get some lunch
Ghostman’s idea is spot-on!
Am so far behind today, and I wish it were work that was the reason.
Anyhoo, Ned needs to totally deconstruct Joe’s “partisan politics” line and expose it for what it is: utter and total bull.
Joe has not yet gotten the message that we are tired of Democrats who think they have to kow-tow to Republicans, and who think doing so is necessary to get things done. Perhaps Joe could point out for us all the many times Republicans “worked with” Democrats in any meaningful way.
I agree with whoever said that Lieberman will now tap into the “security” meme and backtrack to the false choices and totally screwed-up GOP logic on the war in Iraq and national security.
If Joe thinks Dems were angry during the primary, he has not yet begun to feel their wrath. It is still my hope that this is the last gasp of a dying politician, and that after spewing totally Republican talking points for a couple of days, and after someone points out that he is basking in Republican support and pleasure at his independent run, he will find – somewhere underneath his gigantic ego – a last shred of honest self-assessment and stand down, for the good of the party he claims to represent.

I meant to post this last night but it took so long to load the page I fell asleep:
I think Team Lieberman is incomprehensibly demoralized!
The Republican lead Congress appears ready to slash funding for war related brain injury research.
This is Joementums(R)-Delusional crew who engage in this luncacy.

Now why would the White House give a rip about what the Democrats do with one of their own?
Oh, it’s the Republican Joe Lieberman that they are so concerned about.
Posting here is a lot like kissing your sister since just about everyone already agrees.
It’s alleged “poor” Joe Lieberman spent $12 million on this primary. That’s four bucks for every man, woman & child in the state – probably between $15 and $20 bucks per vote.
Don’t kid yourself about Joe being able to get financing for a strong independent candidacy. The money will come from where it has always come from – the Israel lobby.
Nobody questions Israel’s right to exist or defend itself. But we really need to re-evaluate and re-define our involvement in the Middle East.
A Rambo foreign policy is no longer acceptable. And it’s obvious that absolute power is no longer absolute (but still corrupts).

Or the Alamo…
I live in SA. I’m a pudgy whitehaired middle-aged retired military spouse with a kid in the Army. I’d be more than happy to stand up and be counted amongst the ranks of ordinary people who participate in blogs.
jl, 273:”Ned needs to invite Wes Clark to campaign with him so that he can put the national security issue up front.”
I am an admirer and supporter of Wes Clark, but I think for now Lamont needs to establish his own identity and message. Wes is fine in the background with support and message, but this needs to be Ned’s show. With Wes on board, Ned would draw fire directed at Wes, and Ned does not need that right now.
Congratulations everyone.
Hopefully the Loserman blowing his own foot off will be the ’shot that was heard around the World’.

I just was about to ask the same thing…Great minds…
TR (290), Hello, Neighbor. I was going to suggest to Butcher (203) that Texas be included, too, but you beat me to it with SA.
For video producers, would it be too much to change the cast as the days go on so more people and occupations could be included?
CBL (188), my guess is it was Mike Allen. Mike envies Joe the Bush kiss. Mike hearts Bush and all Bush’s merry men.
Slogan: Cut and run OR stay and pay?

How come we Democrats are always taking the blame for a loss? We aren’t allowed to savor sweet sweet victory even for a minute, even in our own primaries? The Republicans are very hard on us.
john in sacramento @ 245
if the stuff about prescott bush and rover’s anticedents is true, verrrrry interesting. something i learned just a few years back is that more americans have german ancestors than any other national or ethnic group. but of course there is a distinction to be made between germans and nazi’s……….

well, you know, the democratic voters made a decision bush didn’t like. those uppity democrats! how dare them!
Why the Republicans Are Loving the Lieberman Loss
At a time when the GOP should be back on its heels, Connecticut voters’ rejection of a centrist Senator gives the party a potentially powerful new weapon to use against the Democrats this fall
By MIKE ALLEN/WASHINGTON

One of the nip-and-tuck Senate races this year is in Missouri, and backers of Sen. Jim Talent are preparing an attack on his opponent, State Auditor Claire McCaskill, that is emblematic of the sort that will be seen all over the country within 24 hours. “Does Claire McCaskill support the wishes of the angry left by endorsing Ned Lamont’s candidacy or will she support the man who was chosen by Al Gore as the Democrat’s 2000 nominee for Vice President?” Republicans ask in a statment that will force McCaskill to talk about messy party business instead of her favored issues of government accountablity and affordable health care.

Maeven makes some good points. Here and here.
This Karl Rove for Lieberman is too
good to get lost in the shuffle.
I hope there is some way to keep it
being posted in the future.
I live in California and unfortnately
D.Feinstein is my Senator , IMO
she is just a short step away from
being a Lieberman Democrat.
I just listened to the Liar News Hour
aka Lehr News Hour because they had
an interview with Lamont and Lieberman
It was the first time I was able to hear
Lamont speak, I was impressed.
Then Liberman came into view. God, I thought
those poor people in CT who had and will have to
see him and hear his whiney voice.
He said he is not runing as Independent
but as a DEMOCRAT Independent.
Now what the heck is a Democrat Independent.??
That was more then enough Holy Joe for
me so I turn the TV and Joe off.

And here’s how you get the money….
Make it a bipartisan freedom of speech issue, using PSAs. Shoot each PSA in front of a backdrop provided by a sponsor who is willing to pay for the privilege of airing the shots. They’re basically all the same script: Blurb about freedom of speech, and our country’s long-standing tradition of expression of personal opinions regarding politics without fear of retribution, followed by everyone shouting: I’m (names), we’re bloggers, and we approve this message!
EXAMPLES: Construction crew members in front of a K&B housing site; doctors and nurses in front of a hospital; supermarket staff persons in front of a market; attorneys and judges in front of the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile parked in front of the Federal Dist. Courthouse. (Okay, so thats MY personal fantasy….)
