Looks like Atilla the Hen will have time for that vacation after all:
Lieberman said he not bothered by losing the support of his Democratic peers, noting he lost Tuesday’s primary even with their support.
"In the end the people make up their own minds and this is going to be a people’s campaign," Lieberman said.
Lieberman said Wednesday that he fired his campaign manager and spokesman, and asked for the resignations of his campaign staff.
"We did not answer, adequately answer, the distortions of my record on Iraq and my relationship with George Bush, that the Lamont campaign put out," said Lieberman, who said he didn’t blame campaign workers. (emphasis mine)
Oh, I see. The fact that the Democratic party leadership, his Democratic party friends, and a majority Democratic voters all want him to step aside doesn’t matter. The fact that Joe Lieberman lost the primary doesn’t count in his mind because apparently the fact that he couldn’t win a majority of the Democratic primary voters was done absent Republicans "people." M-kay.
And if only his staffers had done a better job of making Joe Lieberman seem less like Joe Lieberman, he would have won, according to Joe Lieberman. But he doesn’t blame them, even though they have now all been fired, so that he can re-staff himself with people who believe in him more adequately.
This has now crossed the line to incredibly pathetic territory.
(Vacationing chicken graphics love to Fowl Humor. This picture cracked me up!)

Well, I certainly hope he fired his utterly incompetent technical/Web staff.
Maybe Yale (or some other university) can give him a teaching gig, so he can drop out and not have to find a new miraculous campaign staff.
hey, mr. *izard, shouldn’t there be some helpwanted ads on your website? or are you the pointer to the website?
golly, these tooobz are confusing. think i’ll get me a big truck, like that other Ted.
When did Joe become convinced that his Senate seat is the equal of a life peerage in the House of Lords? Perhaps the madness of King George has returned — who knew that bodily fluids were exchanged in the Kiss?
Expect more damaging leaks from this now-unemployed team. Honestly, there is already so much campaign ad material out there, with all these GOP comments about Joe – not to mention Joe – the “Good Democrat – distancing himself from and dismissing the support of those Dems who supported him in his primary run. Kind of like his “Ned can have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson” comment.
Ned needs to reach out to independents in the strongest way possible – and will have to hang onto the Dems who voted for him yesterday.
Man, this is one helluva roller-coaster ride!

Cripe for the last two days I would hit this site just as the new post and no comments appeared. Finally thinking I would add to the spirit of the community I offer the rallying call, like those calls I’ve read for months on end. Ah well, misspelled, but posted.
What a very pathetic person Lieberman seems to be. Absolutely no clue. None.Glad to see Sherrod Brown get our support. And I am thrilled that we are one step closer to making real change.
For months I’ve been ranting to friends how connections made through the internet are going to have a huge impact on how things are run in this country. Real exchange offered through smart words and clever pictures can make a difference. Making us laugh matters.

Food for thought, if it hasn’t already been mentioned . . .
Maybe the reason Bush wants to help Lieberman is because of the Kiss Float. Everywhere Joe campaigned, the Kiss Float was there.
Bush values loyalty above all else, and if HoJo was that eager to advertise his affection for Bush in a Democratic Primary, then by God — Bush can send some Rove love right back at Joe.
Makes sense, no?
Actually, I read that Lieberman did not fire his staffers, but they quit because they would not work for someone who is not running as a democrat. But I am having a devil of a time trying to remember where I read that . . .
CNN news alert: Explosions heard in south Lebanon but Israeli military denies it is beginning an expanded operation that the Israeli Cabinet approved earlier.
So…which scenario do FirePups think fits?
A. Staffers were p*ssed off at being given the heave-ho, so they conjured up the Rove story.
B. Rove offered a better staff, so Joe-nertia canned the staff (which led to the leak)
C. [Insert your third or other option here]
???
For some reason, number 2 has a certain ring to it.

I loved this diary.
I really can’t fathom how this man looks himself in the mirror.
The people of CT have gone to the ballot box and said Joe, we don’t want you as our rep anymore. I’m fairly certain his campaign staff wasn’t fired. They probably quit. They run campagins for Democrats and now that Joe isn’t a Dem…. well, that’s just my hypothesis.
jk at 26 — if you find it, post a link and I’ll add it into the mix.
Maybe Bush could loan Lieberman the “Mission Accomplished” banner?
Has any exit poll examined the question of whom the newly-registered Democratic voters in Connecticut voted for?
“We did not answer, adequately answer, the distortions of my record on Iraq and my relationship with George Bush, that the Lamont campaign put out,” said Lieberman”
Is that perhaps because there weren’t any distortions?
Atilla the Hen
I *love* that nomenclature.
But the spelling jars my eye every time. If we are to be faithful to the historical figure, it should be rendered “Attila”.
By the way, did anyone else catch Crazy Marty Peretz blaming the whole Lieberman wipeout on… Clinton’s penis? Yep. No doubt about it.
Poor Marty. If only he had taken the time to pick up the phone and call his good buddy Joe and *warn* him about the treachery which lurks within the Clenis!

Hooooray CTBob!!!!
I give Lieberman this: he’s stubborn. To a fault. Assume the worst. That he will not be talked into dropping his spoiler bid as an indie. Lamont needs to concentrate on independent voters and “soft” Lieberman voters. Lieberman or the Republican MUST not prevail this fall. Come autumn, it WILL be Senator Lamont.
Found it!
Here is the link:
http://www.thecarpetbaggerrepo…../8159.html
Here’s what it says:
Lieberman calls it a ’shake-up’; staff calls it a ‘resignation’
Posted 12:27 pm | Printer Friendly
About a week ago, Hartford Courant columnist Kevin Rennie said that Joe Lieberman, in anticipation of losing his primary fight against Ned Lamont, planned to “shake up his campaign staff” before launching his independent Senate campaign. Spin from the Lieberman camp suggested the senator wants to replace his team with “pungent veterans who will take the fight to Lamont.”
I’ve learned, however, that the spin isn’t the whole story.
Two independent sources have confirmed that some Lieberman aides decided well in advance of yesterday’s primary that if the senator abandoned the Democratic Party for an independent campaign, they would resign in protest. Given yesterday’s results and Lieberman’s announcement, that’s exactly what’s about to happen.
The staff “shake-up,” in other words, isn’t necessarily Lieberman cleaning house — it’s Lieberman losing staffers who won’t work for someone who isn’t a Democrat.
*ilson46201,
How many names did you buy today?

EPU’d.
I am still waiting to hear what Bill Clinton has to say about Lamont’s victory and about Bill’s future role, if any, in the race. I assume he will side with Senator Clinton in endorsing Ned, but would like to hear him say that and say he will actively campaign for Ned. What I would really like to hear is what kind of conversation he has had with Lieberman with regard to dropping his independent folly.
Has anybody heard a word out of the Big Dawg last night or today?

It’s sad, isn’t it.
I hear people are being blown up and shot in Iraq too.
That we had the worst abandonment of Americans on American soil ever and had to watch Americans drown in sewage and older, disabled Americans wait to die in unevacuated nursing homes while the President had a lovely vacation.
That we had terrorist criminals, who have still not been caught, plot and execute the massive murder of civilians on American soil, shortly after the President (also on a lovely vacation) sent a CIA agent trying to motivate him packing with a “you’ve covered your ass” snipe.
But the real problem is, as From notes, people just seem to lose civility as they watch bodies float by in floodwaters, or shoveled into mass graves, or come home draped in a flag.

The dem party should do a conference call with all dem candidates and prepare for just such an attack as they are planning on for McCaskil.
By Rove asking if these dems are Lamont dems or Joe dems, what everyone should say is we want accountability. And Bush wants no one to hold him or his administration accountable and Joe went along with that. Joe lost his bid with CT dems who are his boss. End of story.
Joe is like the poor sap whose girl-friend breaks up with him, but he keeps on calling “wanting to hang-out, as friends” in hopes she will reconsider. Yo! Joe! Conneticut Democrats broke up with you! pungent staffers for a plangent candidate …
Okay, let me get this straight –
1. Since his fellow Democratic officials couldn’t win the primary for him, they count for nothing and it doesn’t matter that they’re gone. (I guess the same applies to his campaign staff.)
2. As with Bush and the economy, the reason people didn’t support Joe was that he didn’t explain hard enough, not because they don’t like what he stands for.
This really is approaching Katherine Harris territory…

Yeah, money’s always an object. Look at one of the Sony units that records direct to disk. Sony’s have good optics and good CCD sensors. Ned calls it “our nomination.”
Yeah, what video camera you want depends on your budget and what you want to do with it.
Don’t get a camera that records to DVD.
Here is a basic overview for vloggers
http://freevlog.org/index.php/…..e-cameras/
As they mention, most still cameras now take video, so you could start with that.
The big problem is it is hard to shoot long without shaking.
There are lots of sites with detailed reviews including

Also look at CNET.
The freevlog site has lots of good tutorials.
What’s ignored by the DLC types and Republicans who are moaning about how we could reject the man who was the Vice Presidential candidate is that the VP slot is an appointed position. It means the nominee sees some strategic purpose in having that person on the ticket, not that the person has broad support in the party.
It appears Joe never realized this either. Like Bush, who was “born on third and thought he hit a triple,” Joe was crowned by Al Gore and thought he was born royalty.
Ned is standing tall on Tweety.
John Casper @ 89
do tell, please!
It’s important to note in this post that most of those staffers were ready to quit on their own, some of them on principle, and some because they don’t want to be on the losing team.
This is just Joe’s way to save face, so that he doesn’t have to face headlines about how 2/3 of his campaign staff quit.
On another note, here’s an awesome YouTube video from last night’s Loserman speech: “They’re going to abandon you, you know that.”
Fiyero – Which should also be McCaskill’s response. The majority of americans now qualify as “left wing” per repug talking points. I for one don’t mind repugs promoting that message cause it just alienates more “americans.”
Repugs may think it is a smug, “trick” question. It is, but perhaps not how they think.
There are a number of standalone DVD recorders that support a Firewire input for download off videocams…

Artsy sister would be a good bet for that…
As for the coporate media: f*ck all y’all — and I don’t use that dreaded “Y” word lightly. It’s all Joe, all the time right now with you people. STOP IT.
You media folks don’t seem to get it. Maybe we need a graphic here. Remember the scene from Fiddler on the Roof, when Tevye with such incredible heart-rending pain rents his clothing, his 3rd daughter dead socially to him because of marrying outside the faith? Could you not feel that excruciating torment that Tevye felt, to turn his back on his own flesh, although he must do so because she had wandered off the face of his religious earth?
Yeah. THAT pain.
Joe is DEAD to us. He wandered off, declared greater loyalty to ethics that are not and will never be ours. While it is with incredbile torment and pain that we have watched this happening under our noses, tried to stop it for the last 5 years, he has wandered off to a land of the dead and now refuses to make any effort to come back.
He is DEAD to us, no longer a progressive by any stretch of the imagination, no longer a Democratic Party member. You want to call it partisanship? F*ck you. You didn’t call it that anytime during the last 12 years when Republicans beat on anyone who failed to live up to their so-called Christian fundie family values. This is OUR family, our tribe; we are people who are staunchly progressive, who put the needs of humankind above corporate interest. Joe left the family, lost his religion.
Stop speaking that name that causes us such incredible pain; you’re desecrating the dead.
Apparently Joe just needs the support of the “Right” kind of Connecticut voters. All 20% of them (see ya, Joe).
ned, on the attack on hardballz. countering tony snows comments that lamont will bring about more terrorism.
Quick, before it’s too late! We need a betting pool on how long Joe will stay in the race!
I’m tempted to go with the end of next week, but I think I’ll stick with my first instinct, and call September 1.
I think Tweetie is getting one of his man crushes on Ned.
Thanks, John Casper. That’s all I need to know!
Ned is really very sharp in answering Tweety’s questions. He’s basically ignoring the nonsense of the questions and coming down hard on George Bush.

I just love the way Ned is turning Tweety’s questions around to his advantage. He’s talking like a national-stature progressive Democrat, which he is.

Tweety, asked Ned about Republicans he liked, and he mentioned Colin Powell. Disagrees with McCain on the war, but praises McCain for being against earmarks.
Ned is just kicking ass on foreign policy. He is speaking with much more detail than I have ever heard, very intelligent.
Tweety is fawing all over Ned.
This is a continuing seismic event in our nation. The corporate media is exposed for what they are: No-Nothings.
Joe is exposed for what he is: Republican scum.
Bush and Rove are exposed for what they are: Scared shitless…well, maybe not BushIdiot but Rove certainly knows the jig is up fer his fat ass.
And the more Loserman flails around in CT the less attention will be paid to others, such as Tester, allowing them to run their campaigns on the issues instead of those ol’ ReThug standbys: Fear and Racism.
Keep on keepin’ on Loserman…
Yer also gonna help us flush out the chickenshits is the Democrat Party who still wanna fellate Bush.
Although from the looks of dKos today bein’ a Bush Toady ain’t the in thing.
Neuro – I thought he could have done better on the “partisan” question. First, debunk the idea that Joe isn’t partisan or that republicans aren’t partisan. Why should he or anyone else have to have a favorite repug he could work with? And if it is legitimate question, why not ask repugs the same one. I jsut don’t like the idea of accepting the premise underlying the question – which is that dems are “partisan” and repugs are not.
I have to say thanks to everyone here at FDL for not jumping down my throat for my last post (yesterday) when I mistakenly typed something I dare not repeat again. Seeing Ned’s win gives hope to true Progressive candidates everywhere. We are having a rally against Bush and his anointed candidate for the WI-08 Congressional seat. We all cheered Ned’s win yesterday, and we’re hoping that Nedmentum will carry across the country!
Thank you to the voters of CT, and thanks to all here that worked and gave to Ned to get the ball rolling for 2006 and beyond!
I thought Ned handled the Bush question very gracefully…

Partisanship in the pursuit of virtue is not a vice.
On the PBS Newshour (transcript/audio/video/podcast available tonight at http://pbs.org/newshour/ )
ANTI-WAR VICTORY
Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.) lost Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary in Connecticut to anti-war candidate Ned Lamont, but plans to stay in the race by running as an Independent.
Gwen Ifill reports on the results and then speaks with Lamont about his victory and plans for the rest of his campaign. Then, Ifill speaks with Lieberman about continuing his re-election campaign as an Independent.
Finally, Ray Suarez discusses what Lamont’s victory means for Democrats nationally in November with guests Mark Pazniokas, a reporter for the Hartford Courant who has been covering the Lamont – Lieberman race over the past several months, and Mark Mellman, veteran Democratic pollster and strategist.
Y’know, I’m wondering just how many of the last minute registrees to the democratic party were rethugs, fearful of a Lamont win. And if they hadn’t registered, would not Lamont have won by about 10 percentage points.

Here’s a two-part tin foil hat:
First, these staffers were well-connected with good Democratic Senators. They started in June, IIRC, when the establishment basically told Joe, we’ll support you in the primary, but we’ll support only Democrats in the general. So their departure may have as much to do with their more Demcratic Senate affiliates than just their own sense of principle.
Now here’s my second (extra large size) tinfoil. Holy Joe no doubt knew he was going indy and knew he was parting ways with his staff, one way or another. Yesterday, he called the FBI because he’s too cheap to run his website properly. Today, he had a nice friendly chat with the king of the ratfuck, Karl Rove.
Well, the staffers who, yesterday, suggested that Ned hacked Joe’s site may now be in some legal jeopardy, after the FBI discovers that Holy Joe is just a cheapwad with a Ted Stevens’ sized understanding of the Internets.
Did Sanctimonious Joe set up his soon-to-be-departed campaign staff to take the fall for a Karl Rove ratfuck, knowing they were parting ways.
As I said, several layers of tinfoil here. But Karl is definitely capable of it. Is Joe?
WOW Ned has really grown in his interviews…I knew he would he is smart…Tweety was fawning…..He answered questions and was sharp
Tweet E.’s in lu-u-uv . . .
Evil Parallel Universe:
You have a point there. But I am still impressed with how strongly Ned is coming across on TV. He has really grown in that respect during the course of the campaign, IMO.
RE: McCain
I still wish Democrats who legitimately like him and agree with him would refrain from saying so for awhile. They need to realize that he’s going to be on the other side of the ‘08 Presidential ticket (most likely) from our Democratic candidate and doesn’t need a laundry list of supportive Democratic quotes to use in campaign ads. McCain is just another conservative Republican who just happens to have enough balls to speak out against his party’s excesses occasionally but not enough to actually do anything about it.
Christy, I definitely would ask John at C&L to put up a tape of Ned on HARDBALL.
He just blew me away.
IMO, it was his best performance by a long long way and I have thought all of his performances up until now have been great.
Tweety was firing at him from all angles. The, “who are Republicans that you respect” was from left field and Ned hit it “outta the park.”
Hopefully, the Lieberman campaign will be the “last hurrah” for the NeoCons.
The NeoCons in the media are already mobilizing behind Holy Joe. This afternoon I heard David Brooks on NPR singing the praise of Lieberman as a moderate non-partisan Senator.
People like Brooks have to believe we are a nation of idiots if they think we still believe their propaganda.
This afternoon Lieberman got the endorsement of Mayor Bloomberg of New York. That should be worth a few million in campaign contributions.
I belong to the school that believes it is a good thing that Lieberman is staying in the race. It will be an opportunity to put these scumbags away permanently.

great, now we got tweety humping Lamont’s leg, that can’t be good …
Ned was great. Handled all of Tweety’s questions with poise, eloquence, intelligence. Even the “Which Republicans are your heroes?” potential BS pitfall. I’d have been stumped, frozen. Chuck Todd after: “I thought that was a candidate who sounded very mature.” Amen brother. Go NED!
Yes, Lamont on Tweety’s show is a revelation. A powerful statement by him, forthright, principled, honest and firm – a truly fresh air, needed to blow away the double-talk and mealy-mouthed behavior among some Dems in the Congress.

now THAT’S a Senator
As I commented at C&L (my way of eating crow):
I predicted that he would be too dispirited to run after losing the primary. Now I see why I was wrong about that.
He’s got the psychological defense mechanism of full-blown delusionary denial in play.
Pathetic.
emptywheel — yeah, he’s up to it, Joe would do a ratf*ck on people for political expediency.
He’s been doing it to the entire Democratic Party since he slipped the shiv to Clinton.
DEAD to us. Joe is NO progressive, NO Democratic Party member.
my 2 cents:
I’ve had a Canon Optura for over six years. Mini DV is getting passe, but, I’ve loved the camera. It has made many i-movies for ve and both kids and has seen all sorts of abuse on boats, jungle trails, sandy beaches, arctic blizzards – and it just keeps working perfectly.
John Casper 142 – agreed, he was great. especially in an era when we are used to hearing our stammering drunk simian preznit’s ummm ummm uhhhhhs and mispronounced and misused words (misunderpronounced maybe?)
“with a Ted Stevens’ sized understanding of the Internets”
LMAO.
Always an honor, emptywheel, to have you on an FDL thread. Thanks so much for all you do.
emptywheel #137:
If anything got in the way of your scenario, it wouldn’t be Joe’s conscience. But it might be a stretch that he’d have known enough about the toobz to have set it up, and he still might be culpable if an r.f. order could be traced back to him, right?
But if Karl was talking Joe thru it early enough…hmmm.
If Ned Lamont is always going to be “anti-war candidate Ned Lamont” in the MSM, can we please start having “pro-war Republican scumbag X” in the same byline? You know, for fairness and balance…
Howard Fineman said…They are going to have a real hard time making a characature of Ned Lamont…DUH ya think Howard?
Neuro – Ned WAS good. And Tweety WAS sorta fawning. Ned comes off as a sane, successful businessman with a social conscious – a tough image to successfully attack. That being said, the idea that Joe is trying to sell, and which repugs have sold and continue to try to sell, is that TEAM LOSER is centrist and dems by definition therefor are not, and thus dems need to be bipartisan. I wouldn’t miss any chance I got to speak out against that particularly bullshit.
Bobby St. Chomsky @ 2:30 pm (#136) – That’s why I asked about exit polls earlier. I’m wondering how many folks switched parties to vote for Lieberman, as opposed to who may have registered for the first time to vote for either.

The conflict in Lebanon is poised to deepen. The Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and his Cabinet have approved authority for Israeli forces to push to the Litani River. This advance will not happen immediately but within a few days and Olmert has been given the power to abort it. This decision can be seen as a way of putting pressure on the Security Council to back the French-American resolution with no or minimal changes. This is a dangerous miscalculation and the White House even went so far today as to call for no escalations by anyone, meaning Israel.
The Internet is not just making it influence felt in Senate races in Connecticut. In the past, the French and the Americans could have expected a reasonable chance of success in presenting and passing a bogus resolution to “end the fighting and provide a permanent solution” without anyone being the wiser but not so anymore. Both the text and discussion of the text are suddenly widely available through the Net. As a result, neither France nor the US can hide its onesidedness, unfairness, and blatant disregard for the facts on the ground. The Net also makes it easier for Lebanon and the Arab League to challenge it and a country like Russia to veto it.
In the Internet Age, France and the US needed to propose an actual workable solution and not just a backhanded attempt to gain for Israel a victory it could not win on the battlefield. As it is, Israel is trying to use its threats of a wider war to force through a resolution that is fundamentally a nonstarter and is in the process painting itself into a corner. It is important to realize that there are real negatives to an expansion of the conflict for Israel.
1) It may not stop rocket attacks on Northern Israel.
2) It will not destroy Hezbollah.
3) It will increase Israeli casualties and lead to the guerilla war and quagmire that Israel extricated itself from 6 years ago.
4) It could lead to a failed or semi-failed state on its northern borders making Israelis less safe in the long run.
5) It could lead to greater dependence on Syria and Iran of whatever remains of the government in Lebanon.
6) It will further tarnish Israel’s image internationally and could lead to terrorism against Israelis and Israeli institutions abroad.
7) It will place added strains on the always precarious Israeli economy.

Tweety called Lieberman “the rejected Democrat”
Cujo359,
If I’m not mistaken, in CT for a registered Repub or Dem to change registrations they had to do it back a month or so ago.
Agh. Tweety has that stupid moron Mehlman on…asks him to “say something nice about Schlessinger”, and then asks him whether “he’s clean”.
Jeepers. Mehlman actually pauses TWICE, once before each answer.
Mehlman denying any knowledge of the Rove call, after trying to claim that ABC’s Stephanopolous was erroneous. Tweety calls him on it — for once.
Ned is coming off as a rock star on Tweety’s show. He hit every question out of the park.
YES!
Casper@ 140,
I agree with you. Ned did such a great job—he has really improved! (And think how tired he must be by now…) I thought the questions were so bizarre: “Why should a Republican vote for you?” Hunh? I couldn’t think of a quick response, and Ned did great. I really hope he keeps talking about entrepreneurs being held back because of our country’s lack of national health care. He is getting better and better every day.

60% of the American people are against the war in Iraq, yet these morons at Time keep spouting the usual Republican talking points. I really hope they keep using this “Democrats are weak on security” meme because it won’t work this time. Lamont proved that yesterday. They still don’t get it.

Great news about Ned on HARDBALL. This is exacty what he should be doing: countering the nutty leftist partisan meme they’re desperately trying to spread.
I don’t even mind that he said decent things about McCain and Powell, if he’s able to get past the spin and the so-called “moderates” to take another look at him. This may be where November really gets decided.
Interesting that Ken Mehlman refuses to outright endorse the Repug candidate in Connecticut; he just keeps saying that is for the Republicans in Connecticut to decide.
Is he so reticent to tell Republican Party organizations in other states what to do?
Has he received his orders from Rove yet?

freepatriot, emptywheel — the payoff is anything in front of the committees on which Joe is currently leading/senior/ranking Dem.
Rove offered him something, may have been as little as advice, to put the screws to the Dems. Bet dollars to donuts that Rover told Joe to tell Reid to p*ss off if Reid tries to yank the committee seats from him, that he’d make sure he had funding if he held out and caucused on a so-called “bi-partisan” basis.
It’s a Rovian ratf*ck in process, and Joe will be an enabler just as he always has.
(BTW — Did we ever find out who showed up with Capitol police at Joe’s office on Monday??)

that accusation against ned, that he’ll cause another 9-11 attack just BLEW UP in mehlman’s face
basically, the repuglicans are saying that Ned wants to run like a coward JUST LIKE RONNIE RAYGUN AND GEORGE H W BUSH DID IN BERUIT AND MOGADISHU, and that running LIKE THE COWARDLY REPUGLICANS DID IN THE PAST will invite another attack
thanks ken, I guess Bill Clinton WASN’T responsible for 9-11

Tweety to Mehlman: “Are you saying that Ronald Reagan caused 9-11?” all because of Snow’s asinine remarks this morning. I love it when these guys get caught with foot-in-mouth and get called on the idiocy of the logical ends of their arguments. Now Tweety’s calling him on his failure to endorse his own candidate in CT. Kenny’s gonna need a stiff drink after this interview.
Kudos for Chris Matthews calling Mehlman out for his cut-and-run on Republican candidate Schlesinger in the CT race….ouch.

White House: Lieberman loss means Dems raising ‘white flag’
CRAWFORD, Texas (CNN) — The White House on Wednesday used Sen. Joseph Lieberman’s loss in Connecticut’s Democratic primary to blast opposition to the war in Iraq, saying national Democrats are “walking away” from the conflict.
Snow said President Bush was not commenting on the primary results and would not aid Lieberman’s independent bid. But he said the race indicated Democrats are ready to raise a “white flag” in the war in Iraq…

Thus sayeth Decorated War Veteran Tony Snow.

Just to be clear, Ned specifically mentioned that in his opinion, Powell was not allowed to carry out his policies in the ME.
Lamont not only pulled off a state-wide campaign, he energized the nation like no other democrat since Clinton. The netroot recognition is a real force, and he will always have our support because he actually won!
My question is, how long until he becomes a Presidential candidate, people? He seemed so comfortable answering the question what would you have done differently if you were president. Seemed to me it was something he had thought about.
Sh*t — the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.
What exactly is Rove’s current job title and description? How’s it fit in this scenario?

The U.S. is not leading foreign policy anywhere in the world. And it’s allowing Israel to lead us down the avenue to perdition. There seems only two conclusions to be drawn from the Bush/Rice inaction. Either Washington does not want to control events. Or it can’t. It really doesn’t matter. The result is going to be the same either way. Our goose is going to get cooked.

OT While there are tragic, real world consequences to what is going on in Lebanon, one of the ways to understand it is to look at it as a complicated, convoluted game. If you look at the Lebanese proposal to dispatch 15,000 troops to the South, for example, it really was wickedly clever, if something of a nonstarter. You see Israel and the US have demanded that Lebanon exercise authority over the whole of its territory. The US plan has been for an international force to come in, at some point the Israelis would withdraw, and then the area would be turned over to the Lebanese Army.
There were always numerous flaws in this plan. The Israelis, Hezbollah, and an international force occupying the same area is a recipe for disaster. You would not be able to tell who was shooting at whom. Getting the Israelis to actually leave would be another major problem. I mean the last time they were there it was for 18 years. Who and how Hezbollah was going to be disarmed was never seriously addressed either because everyone knows that until and unless Hezbollah decides to disarm itself, it ain’t goin’ to happen. The Israelis haven’t been able to do it in the last 24 years. And it was never contemplated that the international force was going to fight Israel’s war for it or do what Israel could not. As for the Lebanese Army, weak and containing many Shia, it illustrates how dubious and futile all these strategies of dealing with Hezbollah without actually dealing with Hezbollah are. It is supposed to be the linchpin, the guarantor of sovereignty, the maintainer of peace. Yet in reality it couldn’t clean up manure in a one horse town.
The beauty of the Lebanese proposal was that it calls bullsh*t on these fantasies. It said, Let’s cut to the chase. You want to turn over the South to the Lebanese Army? Fine, we send in the Army, no need for an international force, no reason for the Israelis to stay. Problem solved! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Now the US and Israel are in the awkward position of both wanting them there because they are indispensable and not wanting them there because they are useless.
Matthews always just wants to be on the winning side. It doesn’t matter which side it is, he plays to power.
neuro – I think Tweety is “on” his man crush! lil flush o’ testosterone will do a man good…
Samurai Sam @ 141
Watch the show or the tape when it comes out. Tweety asked Ned a question: is there anything about any Republican presidential candidates you like? Ned said he liked a couple of things about McCain (the issues where McCain agrees with Feingold, btw) but added that he’s wrong on the war and wrong on choice. I thought it was brilliant. McCain won’t be using that in acommercial. Really.
uncle toby @ 200
McCain’ss not only less of a straight shooter, he’d be an even more dangerous president than Bush. His simple minded militarism (and I use every term advisedly) would wreak havoc in the world. For a GOOPer, he’d be about the best we could hope for, domestically, and I’d love to have dinner with him, but as President he would make what people thought about Goldwater reality to an exponential degree.

The more the Israel-Lebanon conflict heats up, the more Republican Jews will come out for Joe. It is a political fact we need to recognize, part of the calculus of politics of the Middle East. Joe means favorable US support for Israel, Ned, a big question mark. Hence, Republicans Bloomberg and Mehlman for Joe. And no, I am not anti-semitic, just realistic.

The good news from Illinios is Senator Durbin is on the record for Ned Lamont.
I am sorry to hear Ned admires Colin Powell. Gen. Powell is one of the fortunate few who had a date with history–and was lacking in character when it counted. Powell’s UN speech sent all of his hard work and career into the dust-bin of history. (BTW Nader is a piece of crap also)
I feel some sympathy for Powell, the loyal soldier, until I think of the death and ruined lives that could have been stopped with a show of courage.

Political fledgling Ned Lamont’s unlikely triumph over President Bush’s favorite Democrat in the Connecticut Senate primary lends itself to all sorts of fascinating interpretations — and one is that it could mark the emergence of an anti-Bush voting bloc.
Lamont’s out-of-nowhere victory, fueled by his depiction of incumbent Joseph Lieberman as a presidential patsy, suggests a political awakening of that sizeable group of Americans who intensely disapprove of Bush, his war in Iraq, and pretty much anything else he touches.

Oklahoma kiddo @ #238:
Several organizations poll political preferences of racial, cultural, ethnic and religious elements of the population. The preponderance of American Jews have supported liberal candidates through the 20th century. The civil rights battle of that century and the late 19th century had many Jewish leaders. It has only been since the 1970s and 80s that prominent Jewish intellectuals from the right have become an increasingly important presence in right wing politics and policy making.
Over the course of US history, Jews have recognized anti-Semitism on both sides of the political aisle, but Republicans are thought to be less tolerant. William Safire, in his otherwise positive book about Nixon, _Before the Fall_, describes the deep-seated anti-Semitism of Nixon and some of Nixon’s cronies, even as Nixon came to rely more and more on Henry Kissinger.
Some of the most outspoken and articulate critics of Israeli and American policies in the middle east have been and are Jewish.
Ned voters don’t “believe America is a special country” they MAKE America a special country.
Toothfairies are for “believing in.”

I heard that too. Then there was the other guy who was a registered republican who changed his registration to vote for Ned.
Oh — and someone upthread asked about the DC plates at Lieberlooser’s headquarters yesterday afternoon. I think I read somewhere on the tubes that it was Boehmer.

emptywheel @ 3:26 pm – “That’s the scenario. Karl either walks Sanctimonious Joe’s incompetent techies through the whole thing, or he just has James Tobin do the hack for him.”
Although Karl knows a lot about direct marketing, I don’t think that whatever expertise he possesses extends to knowledge of the intricacies of the inner workings of a Web site. Someone else would have to hack it for him (or perhaps it could be said that he can’t hack it).
I think that Jamie and others cogently demonstrated that Senator Lieberman’s Web site(s) weren’t hacked.

…what I want to know is: when I call my senators to tell them to vote Lieberman off the committees, exactly what committees are we talking about? Can someone give me some “talking points” so I don’t sound like an idiot? thanks in abvance…
Well you know, I thought about exit polls and figured that would be the response. But I also recall many exit polls giving Al Gore the presidential election. I still don’t necessarily doubt the number. Respectfully, I remain unconvinced. I am cogent of the fact (I think it’s a fact, that is) that the Democrats have traditionally garnered, generally speaking, the Jewish vote. I think I’ve also heard it said that exit polls are suspect because people will tell you one thing upon exit, while doing something entirely different in the booth. Actually, the exit poll reliability and methodology bothers a trifle. So…for me it remains a “mystery”.

Joe is a Party of One now. If he hadn’t fired his staff they would have had to quit. However, he might have laid them off so they could collect unemployment. Maybe they can claim they were fired for no good reason and get unemployment anyway.
And besides, he can’t trust them anymore. They owe allegiance to his opponent’s party. They could be moles or traitors or even terrorists!
This guy is in deep doo doo. He hasn’t thought this through at all. What’s his wife up to? Is she planning to go down with the ship too?

ccmask, from wikipedia:
“Refusal to serve in the Israeli military includes both refusal to obey specific orders and refusal to serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) in any capacity due to pacifistic or antimilitaristic views or disagreement with the policies of the Israeli government as implemented by the army. People who refuse to serve in either capacity are sometimes called refuseniks (Hebrew: סרבנים, pronounced sarvanim).”
and:
“Refusenik’ (in Hebrew: סרבן read sar-van) is used by Israeli soldiers and reservists who refuse to serve in the occupied territories, in protest against Israel’s actions in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Recently, the term was also used to describe soldiers who refuse to remove Israeli settlements from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.”
I don’t know about the rest of you (he-he) but for me the election last night was stress-free. I decided to take a quick nap at 6:30 PM before all the excitement started…I woke up at 3:38 AM. “…if I understand what’s happened in the last 36 hours, Joe Lieberman isn’t a Democrat at all anymore.”
(August 09, 2006 — 02:11 PM EST // link)
I found this clip on Atrios’s site from this morning’s Today Show …
Maxine Waters isn’t really my kind of Democrat. But then, if I understand what’s happened in the last 36 hours, Joe Lieberman isn’t a Democrat at all anymore.
But more to the point. This isn’t just inaccurate, it’s pathetic. I’ts a like a mini-version of the Iraq War or the War on Terror. You’re either with Joe or you’re with the extremists. Apparently half of Connecticut Democrats are outside the mainstream.
This is really the attitude that got poor Joe into this bind.
The mainstream is Joe Lieberman, along with possibly Sean Hannity and Bill Kristol. If you disagree with Joe Lieberman, a disagreement about policy is the least of it. It’s a major existential crisis for the Democratic party which risks conquest by unreconstructed leftists, extremists and miscellaneous other freaks.
The idea that Ned Lamont is ‘outside the mainstream’ on any issue I’m aware of is laughable.
As a matter of civics, if Joe Lieberman wants to run as an independent, good for him. If 51% of Connecticut voters want to vote for him, that’s democracy. As a Democrat, he should get out of the race now. And every Democrat should tell him to.
If he wants to run as an independent he should and could go to Connecticut voters and say, “A lot of people in my own party disagree with me on this or that issue. But I’ve served all of Connecticut’s citizens for 18 years. And I still think I can be the best senator. So vote for me.”
I wouldn’t agree with that. But I could respect it.
But he’s not. It’s all about him and stabbing his own party in the back while he disingenuously pleads that he’s trying to save it. He can’t admit or realize or get his head around the idea that his denial about Iraq and his obliviousness to his own constituents got him into this mess.
In the end, he just won’t come clean. Forget about being a Democrat. Just be a man. It’s time.

Ed*ard Teller…3:33pm
I recognize what you’re saying. But as for Israel, a democratic country, my understanding is that most of the voters in that country support the government’s actions in Lebanon and on the Palestinian question. I know there are a lot of Jewish people outside of Israel and many inside Israel who do not support what their government is doing in the Mideast. Harretz and other sources tell me that. But I do think the Israeli government is over reacting in Lebanon, and I deplore its actions in Gaza. If it’s right for the Jewish people to have a homeland, then it IS right that the Palestinians have one of their own. And be treated with the equivalent respect and dignity that the Jewish people receive and so richly deserve.
*ilson46201 @ 3:46 pm (#275) – From the link:
A hacked module — a form, Hubbell theorized — was generating thousands of emails to joe2006.com addresses. Even after removing various functions from the site, the problems persisted, Hubbell told me. “There were multiple spam attacks,” he recalled. “It seemed like it was internally spamming itself, and there was also potentially an outside source that was hitting it.”
Still sounds like “the dog ate my homework” to me. The most likely “hacker” was a guy who screwed up programming the form. Days, or maybe weeks, later they’ll probably discover the programming error that caused this problem, and no one will care by then.
I’ve experienced (and committed) enough programming errors to know that you can screw up things in such a way that it feels like you’re under attack. When the CPU is busy in whatever endless loop you’ve put it in, it feels like you’ve lost control. In most situations, eventually killing the program gives back control, but if it’s some little applet or formlet or scriptlet that’s just run every once in a great while that’s the problem, it can take a long time to discover, and you may have absolutely no idea what’s going on in the meantime.
…thank you Stephen Parrish, CPA for the info…will make that call soon…also: you younguns’ probably don’t rmember this but refuseniks was a term used to describe Russians during the Cold War when they didn’t want to go to their wars…at least I think I remember this…anybody old enough on this one?
“In the end the people make up their own minds and this is going to be a people’s campaign”
I think Loserman has a point here, but not in the way he might think. After the great experience of yesterday, who’s gonna deny that people made up their mind and that the people’s campaign was victorious? And, (sry, now I may sound to idealistic, but its the view of a foreigner) what topic has a very high value in the people’s mind? Democracy! It’s a value deeply embedded in US history, it’s part of the american way, and it always has been one of the most distinguished aspects of US identity. And its main rules aren’t really difficult to dig, one of them is you can decide to compete for a position, you campaign for your cause, and then comes the day when your fellow countrymen decide.
But that’s exactly the point, it’s one day of voting, it’s THE day, and if you’re not elected, you respect the result and wait for next turn. You don’t simply do the stubborn, spoiled kid, ignore the decision and pretend that this try doesn’t count and that you restart the game. We all now this behaviour from our youth or from young sister, brothers or friends, but it’s not adult behaviour, especially is it not democratic behavior . The system simply wouldn’t work if everybody would feel entitled to ignore unfavorable outcomes and go on, so nobody is allowed to do so (Kant, right?). And in mayn US states, they have such ’sore loser’ laws, it just a historical coincidence that CT is not among them.
Imho, what has to be done now is to generate a lot of buzz about voting and democratic rules. Many citizen simply don’t think much about the philosophy of democracy, it’s something that is simply there, it’s taken for granted. But there always has been a lot of emphasis on what makes America great, so not much campaigning is needed to bring it back to conciousness. And especially the organisations that pretend to pursuit the people’s interest have to be targeted. They have to answer the question if it is according to their ideals and their mission if they support undemocratic manoeuvers.
And the emphasis has to be that seeking a second chance to run for an election may be technicaly not forbidden, but that it violates core US values. Imho it should be possible to spread the insight that Loserman is following a deeply unamerican idea and that no patriotic citizen or group should lend him a hand. If the NGOs can be pusged into the defensive on that issue, they will have to drop support for Lieberman, and certainly many private donators would think twice, too. If Sore Loserman insists on spurning the very principles he purports to defend, ok, but he should be aware that it might be a lonesome voyage.
Re: The TPMCafe report (link at #77) on Liebersite meltdown, in the words of one of the principals (fellow named Hubble) of the Lieberman website hosting company:
If you parse this carefully, the first part asserts that it looked like an internal process loop was going on, causing the system to “spam” (was it really spam or just a continuous stream of email?)itself. Anybody who has been around software knows that this sort of thing is fairly common, especially with new software, not fully debugged (beta version?) Earlier, this hosting company already rejected the idea of insufficient bandwidth for the Lieberman site. However, if the server got caught in a process loop, that can overwhelm the bandwidth (by sending continuous email to itself).
The second part of his statment asserts the “possibility” of outside attack. It may be interesting to note that he mentioned the hack attack alternative second. In any case he makes no outright assertion that there was a hack attack.
So taking this gentleman at his words, the jury is still be out on whether there was actually a hack attack. Of course, his words may be chosen to mislead, but we have no way of knowing that.
BTW, neither of the two principals are campaign workers for Lieberman. They were contractors and service suppliers.
Why is any of this important? Because if Lieberman follows through on his idiotic intention of running as an Indy, he and his campaign are going to continue to use the hack attack meme (esp. with Rove in the mix). We need to have the facts (such as they are) to counterpose their lies.
orangejumpsuit @ 4:15 pm (#301) – I think we’re saying the same thing (my 4:07 pm (#298)).
There’s also the possibility that the reporter didn’t quite understand what he was hearing. He may have been told what I said above, that it was a bug that felt like an attack because it chewed up host resources so much. Or, he may have been more cagey to avoid embarrassing a customer.
302: Yes.

Exactly! I had the same idea yesterday, so I googled a lot and found some tidbits. Far from being evidence, but it’s suspicious (I sent this to TPM Muckraker):
Some ‘Samuel Hubbell’ is named as “the owner of the hosting firm myhostcamp.com, which Geary used for the Lieberman site”. That’s the same Sam Hubbell who is working as art director for Geary Interactive?
http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3557691
And that’s the same Geary Interactive that is partially owned by some Dan Geary of Nevada?
http://www.nevadarenewables.or…..amp;id=349
Also, pls look at this statement from the owner of NevadaToday, a site hosted by the same company and on the same IP:
“Our NevadaTODAY site has been up and down repeatedly in the past several days starting last week sometime. Today we have been down for significant periods off and on since early morning. I don’t know if it was a DoS attack or what, but there is no question we have been affected. I suspect our traffic numbers for Monday and today will be down significantly from the prior week.”

Myhostcamp.com rents one or more servers at Texas hosting service servermatrix.com. ServerMatrix, also called The Planet, has great security options:
http://www.servermatrix.com/se…..index.html
Additional Backup is no pronlem, too:
http://www.servermatrix.com/se…..ckups.html
The Texans use a ‘CPanel’ content management system, so that’s the system that is used for Joe2006 and the other sites, too.
Evidence:
dkos “http://www.meetned.com/ 69.56.129.130

Cpanel license check: “http://verify.cpanel.net/index.cgi?ip=69.56.129.130&x=33&y=14″
Also, there’s a user registered at CPanel with the name of Myhostcamp1 (google the site). He never made even a single post at the support forum there.
Now, I don’t know what to make of this, but this begs some questions:
Has the additional security service been used?
If not, why?
Has the optional backup been used?
If not, why?
Does Sam Hubbell know how to configure and use CPanel?
Is the ‘bandwith suspended’ message an internal feature of CPanel?
There is an awful delay posting comments! What’s the problem? Manual moderation???
did you see this? According to a close Lieberman adviser, the President’s political guru, Karl Rove, has reached out to the Lieberman camp with a message straight from the Oval Office: “The boss wants to help. Whatever we can do, we will do.” … (ABC News Blog)
Continuing Lamont v. Lieberman will also continue to suck all of the oxygen out of other CT races, in particular the three congressional races where Dems have a shot at taking out Republicans. This does not bother Joe, who seems to be acting as Karl Rove’s agent, at all. The selfish bastard.
If this hasn’t been posted, here is Joe’s new team. Looks like promotions from within.
http://hotlineblog.nationaljou…..staff.html
Looks like he even got rid of his internal pollsters. There were also several staff people who resigned because they refused to work for any candidate who was not a Democrat.
Re: My #313:
Even if his promotions are internal, it’s going to take a miracle to get up and running with a new team within a few days. And he will be going up against a finely tuned Lamont team. Truth is, only Rove can help Lieberman now, so he is about to make a Faustian bargain with the devil, if he hasn’t already.
And oh, I nearly forgot: his website is still down. Perhaps now he should consider Lamont’s offer to help.
