We’ve scheduled a special session of Blue America featuring Sherrod Brown live on Wednesday, August 16th at 5:30 PM ET/2:30 PM PT. It’s amazing Sherrod can take off any time at all for this. I was going over his schedule and I saw just event after event all over Ohio with Max Cleland and Paul Hackett. Sherrod is doing well in the polls and looks like he’ll be trading his House seat for a Senate seat in November, but he isn’t leaving anything to chance. His campaign is on full throttle. Please mark next Wednesday in your calendars. Meanwhile, anyone with questions they want me to ask Sherrod in the pre-interview, put them in "comments" today and I’ll read them.
When Sherrod Brown’s campaign first got in touch with me several months ago looking for support, I told them that I admire Sherrod as a progressive leader with a proven track record and and that I admire his (then) primary opponent, Paul Hackett. I asked if they would allow me to sit out the primary and watch the debate and campaign and contribute to whomever Ohio Democrats selected in their primary. I mean this was never a Lamont v Lieberman race. Paul and Sherrod always seemed like two absolutely great candidates to me. And then along come the anti-grassroots, anti-democracy, Inside the Beltway power-mongers (Schumer and Emanuel and their little rat pack) to knife Paul in the back and drive him out of the race. They also managed to drive right-wing rubber stamp incumbent Mike DeWine’s re-elect numbers sky-high.
A lot has changed in Ohio since then. Grassroots Democrats and progressives have gotten over hard feelings and rallied around Sherrod and a couple weeks ago Paul jumped into the race– not just endorsing Sherrod but committing to a heavy schedule of active, passionate campaigning. If Paul could do it… so can Blue America.
A little Blue America update: As I was writing the last paragraph Coleen Rowley called me to congratulation us and to tell me how excited she was about Ned’s victory. She’s been a big supporter of his, of course, but she was strongly against the war even before Bush manipulated the country into it. She told me she felt that the thrashing Lieberman took last night was an echo of what happened in Minnesota last year when another Bush lackey/fake-Democrat, former St, Paul mayor Randy Kelly got has ass handed to him by St. Paul voters outraged over his endorsement of Bush’s catastrophic and destructive policies, especially in Iraq. Coleen reminded me that Chris Coleman beat him by better than 2 to 1 in the general election. "When people told me to tone down my anti-war stance," she told me, "I could see they didn’t understand my campaign or why I was running. This isn’t just about winning or losing. Iraq and everything around it goes to the heart of what’s happening in our country today. Ned’s beautiful victory last night showed that people are paying attention."
I had another call too. Howard Dean called to tell me he’s a huge Squirrel Nut Zippers fan! Apparently so is Stephanie Miller; she played "Have You Had Enough?" on her morning show today. That reminds me; if you’d like to read why Ricky Lee and why Tom and Ken did the song, there’s a story about it here.
Of all the congressional races we’ve talked about at Blue America the most parallels with Ned’s race against Lieberman is Donna Edwards’ race against the equally faithless and odious, Liebermanesque Al Wynn. I just got this from Donna not 5 minutes ago:
Encouraged by Lamont’s big anti-war, anti-incumbent win, Donna Edwards released her latest hard hitting advertisement to be mailed to voters in the district. The copy of the advertisement, which is a political cartoon by artist and progressive activist Tom Chalkley, explains in simple terms the real Albert Wynn. (Note: See the cartoon above.)
"Wynn has voted with Republicans on the Iraq War Authorization, the Bush-Cheney Energy Bill, the Bankruptcy Reform Bill, and the Net Neutrality Bill. And wouldn’t you know, over the course of his time in Congress, he has received $233,436 from the telecommunications industry, $288,963 from the energy industry, and $275,298 from the finance industry. It is clear. Wynn is voting on the side of corporate special interests and against the interests of the people of Maryland’s 4th Congressional District."
Sound familiar? Last, but certainly not least, remember to stop by our Blue America chat this Saturday at 2:00 pm ET/11:00 am PT, when Dave Mejias will be our live guest. He’s running against Long Island’s only remaining — and most repugnant — Republican congresswhore, Peter King.

You guys rock!
What is being done about Ken Blackwell and Ohio election fraud?
Squirrel Nut Zippers!
Something weird, Howie’s post was there, then gone, now back…Maybe it got stuck cross-wise in the toobz behind some movie. Or Ned hacked it. Anyway, I got a zero, woo-hoo!
Hackett’s actively backing Sherrod. Wow, that’s class. Democracy, indeed!
Ya wanna hear about frustration? Call at 5:30 PDT last night from wife: meet me for dinner. Long dinner, desert, and no friggin news feed. Ah, man, I’m trying to concentrate on the conversation, on the food, on my lovely lady, and I keep thinking “What’s happening? Are we winning? Are they stealing it? What’re Jane and TRex writing? What’s Christy’s take? Has *ilson bought up some more domains?” Thank Goddess I was on my motorcycle on the way home, took me maybe six minutes for a twelve minute commute…FDL fix, ahhh…

“Meanwhile, anyone with questions they want me to ask Sherrod in the pre-interview, put them in “comments” today and I’ll read them.”
FWIW, Howie, I think Ned’s winning soundbyte was, “The invasion and occupation of Iraq has made the US and its allies less safe.”
Thanks Howie for all your great work.
Hacket is a cool dude. Period. Period. Period. He was the 1st out-of-my-state candidate that I gave $$ to when he ran against mean Jean.
I hope he can find some time to campaign in CT for Ned.
Josh Marshall has had very questionable coverage of the Lamont/Lieberman race. But he has something more realistic to say today:

Congrats to Brown and Hackett for pulling together and pulling for the party and the right direction for America.
Is there any news about the flip-flopping, turncoat, right-wing former Democrat Joe Lieberman?

This is my favorite part:
Heh.
From the Stamford Advocate about 45 minutes ago: “Lieberman: It would be ‘irresponsible’ not to continue campaign.”
Coleen [Rowley] reminded me that Chris Coleman beat him by better than 2 to 1 in the general election. “When people told me to tone down my anti-war stance,” she told me, “I could see they didn’t understand my campaign or why I was running. This isn’t just about winning or losing. Iraq and everything around it goes to the heart of what’s happening in our country today. Taylor Marsh has a great picture of a soldier in combat gear on her site today. To me, it shows why the war is too important to be quiet about.

Thanks for speaking up, Colleen and Ned.
OT – msnbc just debunked lieberman’s ‘hacking’ story because of emails sent to them. A day late and a dollar short msnbc. no mention on how or why they jumped on the bandwagon and immediately took lieberslime’s accusations as fact without doing any checking.

Why isn’t the message loud and clear when the right wing pundits, Karl Rove and the Bush administration are all backing Lieberman? What part of this message doesn’t the Democrats who voted for him get?
Bye Sean.
Bye Marion.
“Lieberman said Wednesday that he fired his campaign manager and spokesman, and asked for the resignations of his campaign staff.”
Good for Josh.
I’m going to go out on a limb and speculate that a disgruntled former campaign staffer took a playbook right out of Rove’s playbook and stabbed his former boss in the back by leaking the fact that Rove has offered his services!

Go Coleen Rowley! Glad she’s feeling optimistic about the way things are moving. I live in St. Paul and arrogant Mayor Kelly’s resounding smack-down was a moment to treasure. Hope to see Coleen’s opponent John Kline meet the same fate this fall.

Heh, heh. Anyone want to lay any bets on how long it’ll be before there are more embarassing leaks?
John Casper @ 14
Jesus. I suppose when Joe loses in the CT general election, he will want to take it to the nation – so that ALL the people can have a say…
And he’s “not bothered” by the loss of the support of his peers, because he couldn’t win the primary even with thier support? What?
I’m thinking those chants of “Go Joe” were really chants of “E-go Joe,” as Joe’s has just taken over possession of his mind.
Snow:
“I know a lot of people have tried to make this a referendum on the president. I would flip it.”
Longer Snow:
Because I don’t want it to be seen as a referendum on George W. Bush, I will attempt to “flip” facts and story line to suit myself and the guy who pays me tens of thousands of dollars a year to change the story from his failures and lame duck statues to something else more advantageous to me and my pals and my boss.
Way to go Dog and Pony Show.
Sometimes they say it right out in the open.
“Let me flip it.” Ha, ha.
-GSD
Hmmm…
Sean and Marion will probably be persona(s) non grata in progressive circles for a long time to come.
However, I think they could begin to redeem themselves if they began to dish a bit about their “experiences” with Joe on the campaign trail.
For example – did Lieberman and/or his staff talk with persons in the Bush administration regarding campaign strategy?
If so, how often?
Did high-profile Republicans call to offer encouragement and advice?
If so, how often?
What did Lieberman say in private about his (formerly) fellow Democrats?
I hope to hear more. I suspect that Lieberman’s recently fired staff may have been the source of the Rove information, and I bet they aren’t done talking yet…
“Unless I don’t like what they decide, and then I will just barricade myself in my office.”

I know I sound like a broken record, but before this race, I never heard of Sean Mehlman Smith. Can anyone enlighten me? I mean where did Joe find this guy? Does he have a past? I have been wondering ever since he went after Swannie re Lamont’s taxes. There was something so slimmy the way he just stayed on his one or two little attack-dog talking points.
Though thankfully, it looks like he won’t be having much of a future.

Tony Snow is a punk, who must deliver his talking points while standing on his head, because what emanates from the podium is usually total BS.

Ned’s extraordinary victory will wake up a lot of ordinary people unhappy with their incumbent’s representation. People in John Doolittle’s district, in Jerry Lewis’ district, in Brian Bilbray’s district, in Denny Hastert’s district, in John Kline’s district, in Jim Talent’s state, in Jon Kyl’s state, in George Felix Allen’s state will say — if they hear about Connecticut voters’ utter rejection of an 18-year incumbent senator:
“We can do that? We can fire this guy? Well, let’s fire him then!”

I would like you to ask Sherrod Brown what his views are on executive power and what he would do to restore the balance of powers between the president, the Congress and the courts, and in particular to ensure that Congress exercises its oversight powers over the executive. This issue encompasses torture, habeas corpus, military tribunals, the Geneva Conventions, the military code of justice, and all the other matters on which Bush has issued “signing statements” that flaunt his duty to see that the laws are faithfully executed. What would be Mr. Brown’s strategy to change the Rubber Stamp Congress and restore the balance of powers as contemplated by the Constitution?

I am so sick of EVERYONE — dems, media and rethugs coplaining that there aren’t enough Dems like holy Joe willing to reach across the aisle for the good of the country.
Why doesn’t anyone — the Dems, moderate republicans like the ones from New England, or the media — ever complain that the rethugs refuse to reach across the aisle to work in a bi-partisan manner for the good of the country.
OK vent over. I am listening to NPR and I just heard Michelle ask that stupid question
Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) says the number one issue facing America today is the Iraq War. I cannot disagree. Solving the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and halting what’s going on in Lebanon before it boils over into an uncontrollable cauldron and engulfs the whole Mideast, and perhaps the world, had better be on somebody’s agenda. And fast. Israel has today OK’d a wider war in Lebanon. This thing is really festering and getting bigger by the moment.

The amazing thing about Katherine Harris is how she was complicit in rigging the 2000 election in Florida for her Republican friends and how the Bush guys, Jeb and George have paid her back by dumping on her. These people are ruthless.

Wow,
Between laptop troubles and all the traffic, I have not been able to catch up with the threads.
First let me offer my heartfelt congratulations and thanks to everyone here for all their hard work, faith and support in the first succesful step toward bringing our democracy back from the brink if totalitarianism.
Like you, I want my democracy back. Like you, I believe that will only happen when we convince our Conress to stop being a doormat/ rubber stamo for whatever whim the WH comes up with this week.
Secondly, I would like to point out with special fondness those who were able to make the trip to Conn. and to the Conn. bloggers for helping the rest of us feel so very connected. How much fun and excitement (and knowledge) would we have missed out on, if not for the blogging, the photos and the videos that you all put up on the web for us to see.
And lastly, I would like to commend those who held down the fort back here at the Lake. I can only guess what craziness was going on behind the scenes from all the increased traffic, and I can only imagine the comment moderation problems that must have gone on. I know, I could not get onto FDL at all last night, I’m guessing because of the volume.
Everyone in this community did so very much better than anyone could have predicted.

Maybe Lieberman will hire Bob Shrum, in which case, the election is Lamont’s.
Paul Hackett is tough as nails & a class act. From what little I have seen, he has been making a boatload of appearances and efforts to help Dems, esp the Fighting Dems, but all around.
If he’s good to go with Brown, then ok by me. Hackett has EARNED his shot, though, at just about whatever else he wants to try for later.
Go Colleen, GO Donna (and I have to send the shout out to John Laesch’s campaign too – his brother Pete, from Iraq, was one of the first to put it in print: Lamont is going to win – 110% sure!
For Brown – I think he needs, even more than Presidential powers, etc. to hit the corruption buttons, bc that is what OH has been all about lately. It should resonate with the voters who have watched the coin deals and the lobbyist scandals.
I am interested in knowing his take on the voting machine situation and if there are efforts he would like to see organized in advance to help protect the vote.

It’s gonna be tough finding good, experienced campaign staff at this late date. It’s a pretty chummy and exclusive club, and everyone worth having is snatched up, already. The only people available are newcomers, malcontents and those unemployed due to losing a campaign (it’s tough to call some of these folks losers–I don’t think Hackett’s team could have been called that). Of course, a good team can be made up of those, with the right candidate and mix of staff. But the pickin’s are slimmer than they were last January.
Yeah, this August primary must make Nelson, DiFi, and others pretty worried/happy that they’ve got their parties’ nod for reelection. Their primaries are out of the way.
OTOH, Jonathan Tasini must be pretty excited to see what impact Ned’s win will have on his uphill climb against HillDog, primary in September….

This is the part of your quote from Greenwald that I like the most:
“3) Sixty-one percent of voters “rejected the notion of Lieberman running as an Independent candidate in the fall.” That number is sure to grow as a) the image of Lieberman as the loser seeps in and b) most of the Democratic establishment abandons him and actively supports Lamont.“

It’s not too late to correct your course, Joe.

I’m not familar with Nevada, so I’m not sure if Smith is a Reid guy-or what his angle is. What I remember about him was speaking on Kerry’s behalf about the Yucca Mountain project, and it was specificaly stated that he was Kerry’s Comm Director in Nevada. Perhaps it would be a good thing if Ned Lamont paid a visit to Donna Edwards. Soon. To help in her campaign and as a show of solidarity. Maybe it’s already in the works.
I am still waiting to hear what Bill Clinton has to say about Lamont’s victory and about Bill’s future role, if any, in the race. I assume he will side with Senator Clinton in endorsing Ned, but would like to hear him say that and say he will actively campaign for Ned. What I would really like to hear is what kind of conversation he has had with Lieberman with regard to dropping his independent folly.

Katherine Harris is always looking for staff. By the way, this can’t have come as a surprise to the gruesome twosome. Joe’s plan to get rid of his staff if he lost was in the papers last week. I thought Sean looked nauseous (as oposed to his usual nauseating) last night on Tweety’s 1:00 A.M. roundup — you know, the interview where Sean couldn’t say whether HoJo would even endorse the Democratic House candidates. If he hadn’t already gotten his walking papers, he knew he was about to. And I do expect HoJo to blame Sean for the false hacker story, because of course nothing is ever HoJo’s fault. But I’m not sure Sean was the source of the Rove leak. That was sourced to a Lieberman “advisor.” My money’s on Gerstein. If we find out he was canned too, bingo.
Josh Marshall wants Joe to be a mensch and drop out. Only a week or so ago, Josh was publicly meditating on his conflicted feelings about Lieberman, whom he says he likes. Today, he may still like Lieberman but his politial stance on Joe is no longer conflicted. This is a somewhat shorter version of his article in Time, in which he says basically that Lieberman has been ignoring his CT constituency for a long time, the Iraq war being the final insult.
Josh is also a self-admitted Zionist (see his post of a few days ago, I no longer have the link), and that means he has that much in common with Joe. The lesson here is even people who like Lieberman and share his views want him to stand down. Of course, Josh has nothing political at stake, though his credentials as a liberal may come into question. I suspect he is aware of this. But he has clarified his position with this call to Lieberman to quit now. If only the “liberals” at TNR were that open-minded. They’re still backing Joe.

…just a bit before my time, although now that you mention it I can the Everly Bros. singing it.
Sorry Howie… but not all have forgotten or forgiven that Brown was a “willing participate” or perhaps one should say “willingly approving bystander” in the rat fucking of Hackett…so win or lose…. he’ll be carrying at least a whiff of that stink for some time to come….
serves him right…
My question is what was Browns position on Lamont……prior to Neds win?

” and that whole halfway through the game shit last night was an insult to voters everywhere”
Joe’s BS about “halfway through the game” reminded me of what he said in trying to distance himself from Bush–that he was the only person who had run against George W. Bush in two elections. Joe has a tendency to play fast and loose with the facts. In 2000, he did not run against Bush, of course; he ran against Dick Cheney for VP (apparently his own impression of that race has become inflated in his own mind). In 2004, he did not run against Bush, he ran against people like John Kerry and John Edwards, who, like Joe, were seeking the Democratic nomination, not the presidency itself, at that point. (That was also when Joe made his famous whopper about being in a three-way tie for third place after he came in fifth in New Hampshire).
I think what Joe Lieberman needs between now and November is a truthiness squad to follow him around and correct his errors and exaggerations.

indeed – thanks for the background
A few days ago, we were discussing on here the numerous political criminals from Ohio. In addition, I’ll point out the new presidential press secretary, Tony Snow is from Cincinnati, as is the Speaker of the House, John Boehner (Boner). Somebody save us!
“In the end, he just won’t come clean. Forget about being a Democrat. Just be a man. It’s time.”
This the best quote I have seen today. I saw Joe on ABC this morning whining about how he wants to save Connectinut and America. He needs to be a MAN and just admit that he screwed up and didn’t take care of business—his constituents.
Of course he had to throw in that his wife told him he could make more money out of Congress. The more I see him the less of a man I see. Now he’s going to become our savior.
Ned coming up on Hardball. This should be fun.
I was very upset when meanjean won over Paul Hackett.
I was thrilled to hear Hackett decided pull out of the Senate race, and is now working with Sherrod Brown.
Gee. How can these seemingly irreconcilable thots coexist such a small brain? Okay, pull up a chair & listen a spell…
We’ve lived in OH a long time (over 30 yrs). Sherrod represented us for many of those years, UNTIL the repubs recently gerrymandered him away from us in an effort to – well – let’s just say the decidedly ‘creative’ boundaries of our strung-out, cobbled-together district would make that TX bugkiller gasp in admiration, grump.
Our long history of watching and listening to Sherrod Brown work for the people he represents easily convinces us he would very quickly become one of the best Senators in D.C. He’s a bundle of energy, like Ned. He also has a similar personality in being friendly, outgoing, and unflappable, but tough, articulate and aggressive in fighting for what he believes in. He’s very bright, very savvy, and very dedicated.
When he represented us, he visited his district often, and always stayed in touch with the people through regular ‘town meetings’, newsletters & personal correspondence. His campaign for the Senate so far reflects a lot of what I’ve seen from him in the past. He TRULY MEANS IT when he says he wants to represent the people. He’s all over the state these days. My guess is he could really some manpower help.
His environmental voting record is impeccable, ditto in human rights & privacy issues. He’s been fighting a long time to get legislation passed to improve health care. He acts, innovates, and speaks out eloquently on the floor of the House, where he’s gained considerable seniority at a relatively young age, and has earned the respect of his colleagues.
He already has terrific name recognition in the state, and has been working hard to improve that aspect of his campaign.
I could babble forever, but I promised myself not to.
Again, he’s like Ned, I think, in that the more you know about him, the more you’ll like him and trust that he knows what to do, and he means what he says.
The only ’stain’ on his campaign that I can think of was when Schumer and Emanuel intruded so oaf-ishly. What they were thinking, I can only guess, but the 2 of THEM handled it badly, NOT Sherrod! I think proof of that feeling is borne out by Paul Hackett being so willing to dive right in and work with the campaign. (And yes indeed, that also says a lot about Hackett’s dedication and personal values.)
Oh, and last time I noticed, Sherrod seems to understand just fine how the toobz work ‘n all.
I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’ve decided to help him. I’m thoroughly convinced he has a terrific chance of unseating DeWine.
By the way, DeWine’s campaign has already turned nasty. Sherrod has a solid reputation for being a clean, very savvy campaigner, but he’s plenty tough enough to handle the rough-&-tumble with class and spark.
Go to others to gather the ‘tough’ questions you need for a meet-up. We’ve already seen his talent, commitment and style in action.
When you get around to it, our questions would be more in line with,”What can we at FDL do to help your campaign?”
p.s., I’m Adie, and I approved this message ;->

Bush:
Too much money makes you stupid.
NED was GREAT!!!!!!!!
He’s exactly what we need!!!!!
Ben Franklin said it first.
We must all hang together or we will surely hang separately.
Or, as an early typing teacher chose as a typing exercise:
“Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party”. (I never understood why this makes such a good typing exercise. It lacks a lot of letters).Never mind.
Just get behind all Dems in all ways.
The Honorable Sherrod Brown
US House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Congressman Brown,
On Friday June 2, 2006, 250 copies of the book “Crashing the Gate: Netroots, Grassroots, and the Rise of People-Powered Politics” were distributed to Democratic members of the United States House of Representatives and Senate. Members of the FireDogLake blog community are now contacting those members of Congress by phone and email to ask them if they have read the book (it’s a fast read) and what response they have to the ideas presented in the book about the lack of organization and infrastructure within the party and the progressive movement.
Highlights from an Amazon.com reviewer.
“Armstrong and Zuniga discuss some of the key disadvantages progressive candidates and activists face in today’s political landscape and some of the changes that should be made to even the playing field. While I was familiar with much of what they discussed, I thought the chapter on media consultants and the relationship between the DNC and those consultants was very interesting and illuminating. As a donor to both the DNC and Democratic campaigns, I certainly agree that more transparency and accountability is necessary in spending by the party.”
I would be pleased to receive your personal comments and share them with the FireDogLake blog community.
Best Wishes to you on your campaign for the United States Senate.
Go Blue!

Howie–thanks for the CD’s and for the WalMart movie! See you Saturday.
To Karen Allen, 120, Ah, yes. Cincinnati has indeed spawned a surfeit of slobbering cesspool slime. I’m sure you all mentioned that in addition to Boehner and Snow,we have Jean Schmidt, Blackwell, Bob Taft, Simon Leis (of People Vs. Larry Flynt fame) and Charlie Keating of the 80’s S&L scandals. Then again,Paul Hackett lives here and George Clooney is from this area. Ohio! Exciting! Inviting! Indicting!

I still haven’t received a response to this email I sent to Congressman Brown on June 3, 2006. Hopefully Howie Klein will follow up on the questions raised in the book.
