Hotline on Call's guest poster Kevin Rennie compares the possible voting patterns in Connecticut to donuts. Not sure I agree. And I think it is sloppy to think of this in terms of blue collar versus white collar for Lieberman versus Lamont support.
I think people in Connecticut, across the board, are fed up with Joe Lieberman not working hard for Connecticut -- but working really hard for Joe Lieberman. That's the sense I've gotten from every CT voter that has e-mailed. I'd be interested in hearing some thoughts from our Nutmeg readers. Somehow, I'm thinking that a guy with a record of actually filling potholes and teaching kids in an urban setting, day in and day out, is attractive to a whole lot of people who have been getting the cold shoulder from Lieberman's office for years.
If you've got some thoughts on voting and/or donuts, and especially campaign work today -- calls, canvassing, rides to polls, what have you -- please share in the comments as well.

mmm, fresh donuts… hot off the line, tasty.
Tasty like victory.
Krispy Kremes are disgusting.
Krispy Kremes are disgusting.
Krispy Kremes don’t have blood on them.
Post time… 8 minutes…
Jani @

A-friggin-men.
I don’t understand the appeal. Shipley’s or nuthin’ for me.
Krispy Kremes are great. I used to work at Dunkin Donuts… ummm…. I eat Krispy Kremes.
Jani @ 2
Have to disagree…so tasty! Very bad for you, but darn tasty when hot!
NED!!!
Buchanan on hardball saying Lieberman should be out if he loses the primary! Never thought I would agree with that wacko!
Some people vote for the dough, some for the hole.
Did Joe actually hold that 5:00 Victory rally?
do-nuts are fat pills
The doughnut represents in visual form the amount of salary the Federal Government will be paying Joe Lieberman by January 7, 2007.
Will you be posting exit polling?
Anyone else notice how Kos and Maxine Waters were on too late to make a difference in the vote?
Everything I’m reading says to me that we’re about to hear the announcement of a landmark moment in American politics. Hamdan, Ralph Reed, Kansas school board…Lamont? 26 years after Reagan in ‘80, could we finally be witnessing the receding of the conservative tide?
I always say I never met a fried dough that I didn’t like!
I am very partial to fried dough in all its forms: doghnuts, beignets, galub jamuns…etc.
mmmm… Krispy Kremes!
Wow.
MSGOP has been repeatedly showing a clip w/RGJoe giving a peace sign throughout the day.
WTF?
I know it doesn’t mean much as far as voting/impression goes on primary day…but I think it’s a hypocritical WTF shot.
What. Ever.
Or… the donut represents the amount Joe spent on webhosting.
I just bought these:
www.CT4Joe.com
www.CT4Joe2006.com
enjoy !
(Joe’s webfolks are DUMB FUCKS!)
Sure are lots of old scripts lying around.
Time for a new level of communication.
CTBob has pix of the big room and Jesse Jackson in the house.
Mmmmmm… donuts. But please don’t use this metaphor — it’s already owned by Medicare Plan D coverage. My poor aching brain can’t handle metaphor overload.
I think the turnout story in CT is pretty simple — high voter numbers means they feel they have something important to vote on. To me that spells L-A-M-O-N-T.
Hope those donuts means one big turnover (of a Senate seat).
reviser at 14 — add “Delay” to that list
Dunkin Donuts rocks, Krispy Kreme not so much. Too doughy, and they cooked their books to boot.
Well, ya know they make Fried Twinkies in Oklahoma.
I like bear claws. But the best donuts ever are springtime Strawberry Donuts from Donut Man in Glendora, CA… they take a plain cake donut with no hole, like one you’d expect to be filled with frosting or bavarian cream or something, and they slice it totally in half. They load up the bottom half with fresh-picked strawberries that have been sliced in halves or quarters… they pack that thing like 4 inches high with strawberries! and then they stick the other half of the donut back on top, almost as an afterthought.
Yeah, you have to eat it with a fork, but it’s the best donut I’ve ever had.
I actually think that, with some of the Union endorsements, Lieberman might have some bluecollarish edging, not because the people are behind him, but because they are committed to their Unions.
Hopefully, when Ned wins, that releases them to go for the guy who won’t forget that Americans who don’t have much choice but to live off cheap day old donuts need healthcare and educational assistance for themselves and their children and someone who can find something better to do with 10 million/hour than create more terrorists and chaos in Iraq.
My fave donuts were the super lazy, super bad for you ones made by cutting up instant biscuits (some mornings you really looked forward to smacking that cannister on the corner of the counter) dropping them in boiling fat, then shaking them in a paper bag with cinnamon and sugar and having them hot, with cheap coffee or if it was really cold and you had already spent a freezing hour in the barn - hot chocolate.
MsAnnaNOLA @ 14
Oh, now you’re just making me hungry. I can taste that hot, syrupy galub jamun in my mouth right now!
Christy - in addition to all of your other extraordinary talents your TIMING is also exquiste. How do you do it - can imagine you enjoyed ballet training.
Markos on Keith at the time the polls close in CT.
Life just doesn’t get any better than today!
Doughnuts? Bearclaws, strudel…?
I don’t care as long as Ned wins the day.
I’m hoping to break into the champaigne thats been sitting in the frig since Nov ‘04.
Thanks Jane, Christy, Trex, Jamie and all the FDLers in CT for keeping all the rest of us in the loop!
No doughnuts for me, thanks. They make the beer taste funny.
Speaking of funny, Anyone seen Punaise lately?
AirportCat @ 10
Is it okay if you add protein to balance it out? :-)
June 23, 2006 — It may be a cardiologist’s worst nightmare — a Black Angus all-beef patty covered in melted cheese, two strips of savory bacon all between a sugary, deep-fried Krispy Kreme donut.
mmmm Krispy Kremes. I used to have to pick up 42 dozen for the continental breakfast we served at the hotel I used work at every Sunday morning because the didn’t deliver. Overwhelming, but I still can’t pass one up.
Lamarr’s in Kansas City . . . with a Ted Drewes Frozen Custard “Concrete” from St. Louis. (Dry ice is a wonderful thing when it’s hot driving down I-70!)
Turks just showed Holy Joe standing next to Barney. Hilarious!
Donuts is empty calories that make ya fat. I hear Krispy Kreme has just opened its first joint in China. Hah! They been killin us tradewise, now we’re gonna start gettin em good.
Reviser @14 - “Hamdan, Ralph Reed, Kansas school board…Lamont”. I wouldn’t have thought to put those moments together, but it does seem to be a trend in the direction of sanity . . . if it holds together tonight.
7:59pm… must have results…
bdu @ 27
Oh, now you’re just making me hungry. I can taste that hot, syrupy galub jamun in my mouth right now!
ever have an elephant ear? Mmmmmmmmmmm, alleghan county fairgrounds….

… and funnel cakes at JazzFest!
reviser @ 14
Only if we keep the pedal down, either way.
Tester-Burns, Brown-DeWine, Brown-Doolittle, etc… Long way to go.
CHS - you are amazing!
3 seconds from polls closing…. any word from the streets?
Hungry.
For a Lamont Victory!
Uh…per my comment…maybe it was a victory sign. Who knows.
Go NED!
I was making donuts and now I’m on a bus.
– Zippy
Yum. My favorite donuts came from The Apple House on Skyline Drive in the Shenendoah Valley (I think ) in Virginia. Made to order by mennonite women, whole wheat with cinammon. Those and a gallon of apple cider and a hunk of cheddar made a great lunch. Wonder if it’s still there?
Lieberman’s been in office too long, pure and simple. It’s not a peerage. I look forward to Doolittle, Pombo and Dreier here in CA getting tossed on their keisters in November, too.
ChinChin, as my mom used to say as we touched wine glasses.
Olbermann starting now on the best coast.
Bustednuckles -30
Punaise in away on vacation or business - or something or another and hope he is aware of the CT victory we’re all set to celebrate.
Markos coming up on Keith any minute.
OK, it’s time.
immanentize at 22: I’m not even counting all the indictments/resignations/investigations; just the affirmative votes, from the Supremes down to these summer primaries, that suggest a turning point in the oscillating political zeitgeist.
Here’s hoping/wishing/praying/waiting. We should know any minute now…
Ay, *ilson! The bold!
Put me in the Love those Krispy Kremes column. Have one right down the street from my house. Heaven.
Any exit poll data yet? I’ll even take the raw stuff.
I’ve seen a few things about high percentages in some precincts, but not an overall. Ooh. Aren’t the polls closed as of now, too?
This was always the part that I hated–the polls are closed, and now all you can do is wait for the votes to be counted and posted. Link to the CT election board anywhere?
This is the lead story on my local news just now! Mentioned the small crowds for Joe today and Joe whining pitifully about being slimed. Ned looking great surrounded by smiling people. Mentioning the web site BS and about formal complaint, and Ned denying involvement. I thought it had a very positive sping for Lamont, but hey. This is SF!
I know no matter what, Ned will have a very, very classy evening tonight, surrounded by lots and lots of supporters.
That’s it! 8:00! Hooray for Ned!
And now the results, pls :)
“Bottom of the Barrel Bill O’Reilly” is running the “anti-Semite” left wing website slurs story up front on his hackeriffic show.

once this election is decided, win or loose, I am going to need a fitz fix
/hoping we can get some kind of update…prgnostications, expectations, etc
puh leerze?
reviser @ 14
I’ve always had this kind of folk-belief in 30 year cycles in history. The pendulum swings…let’s hope it goes left this time.
Ms. AnnaNola - now beignets, that’s a whole nother thing…the beautiful word itself, the sensuality with which it rolls off the tongue…Lo-lee-ta…
Reviser at 14 - add in 18-24 yos having a 20% favorable for Bush.
Sometimes, I don’t hate it when smartass kids are smarter than me.
peaceout
Lieberman hasn’t represented his home state for years. He’s hardly been in Connecticut since 2000. He has not, as a U.S. Senator, represented his country either, (Iraq). And he certainly has not stood behind his party against the Bush lunatic policies.
As for donuts. I don’t have any. But I do have a couple of cans of buttermilk biscuit dough. And a deep fryer, powdered sugar and cinnamon. Just like we used to make when we were kids. Put a hole in the dough, fry ‘em, and dress them up. Good to go. Ice cold milk and hot donuts. Soon.
Lanny Davis is the new Joe Lieberman. He has handed Bill O’Reilly a new friendly talking point that the left wing is now the premier hate monger group.
Thanks Lanny. Thanks Joe. Thanks for getting the Karl Rove talking points front and center once again.
-GSD
Tweety is saying Joe loses 5 - 7 % but he’s not sure
The local bakery here sells Peanut Butter and Jelly Donughts. They put peanut butter frosting on jelly donughts.
Inspired and very tatsy.

how much more one-handed food can i eat today? this blogging is messing with my diet. maybe someone should market gourmet blog meals that can be eaten with the left hand.
Plummet @ 29
Not a nutmeg, but my take on Rennie is that a lot of rank and file thought the bosses told them to vote for Joezoe or not at all. It gives them an out with both candidates.
The unions had to be pretty pissed off at ol’Joezoe, but understandably scared about alienating him. There never should have been a primary. All Joezoe had to do was oppose a war of choice instead of leading the fight for it.
Mommybrain @ 54
Sure: the FDR liberal era, then the Reagan conservative era, now…
Nominations, anyone, while we’re waiting? Looking back 30 years from now, will we idolize President Big Al? Or Obama? Or Lamont? Or my man Gavin Newsome?
You must then, Twisted Martini, have an Indian accent. As I recall, Joe Biden once said, “You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”
Or was that just in Delaware?
I’ve never had a Krispy Kreme donut but Anne and Oklahoma kiddo’s recipes sound like heaven, I gotta admit!
smiley @ 38
ever have an elephant ear? Mmmmmmmmmmm, alleghan county fairgrounds….
No but is it like an apple fritter. I love those too and also the bavarian creme filled ones!
A couple of years ago I had a king cake with bavarian creme in it and I almost gained fifty pounds in 15 minutes. I couln’t stop eating it.

CTblog claims they will have some results and Lamont will make a speech at 8:30. They are really having a great time, posting like crazy.)
Okay, I posted this earlier during a very busy point of the day, so I’ll repeat it now.
As a nutmegger my feel is the trend is our friend. The heavy turnout will benefit Lamont.
My son’s five friends just registered to vote for their first time (18/19 year olds) and they’re all voting for Lamont. Given that Bush polls at only a 20% approval rating among 18-24 year olds, the majority of new voters will most likely be siding with Lamont.
Then of the independents who switched to the Dem party to vote in the primary, I have to believe they did this because they want a change not because they want to protect the status quo given that polling numbers show that they overwhelmingly do not support the Iraq war.
Lastly, considering Lamont polled better with the higher education levels and higher income levels, and those polls in such areas are showing high turnout also bodes very well.
They just mentioned Waterbury on MSNBC, the town where Clinton came to stump for Lieberman and a very blue collar town. The reporter sounded almost dismal about the turnout there as well as the absentee ballots which are generally filed by the elderly. It was not good and they presumed this boded very ill for Lieberman.
Lastly, the connection to the black community laid down by Bose Kimber and his association with Al Sharpton, and the addition of Maxine Waters has done much to charge that block of voters for Lamont.
I’m confident. My polling place here in the Mt. Carmel section of Hamden (middle to high income) is also showing an approximate 50% turnout.
My hope is for a total blow-out in favor of Lamont, but I’ll be content with a simple win, too.

fran, glad to see you on a thread.
Hey, you mentioned visiting your brother in a V.A. hospital. We all hope things are going as well as can be expected.
Kos on Olbermann, mentioning that Joezoe was only paying $15/month for hosting.
krispy kreme is a population controling substance designed to kill by promoting diabetes, heart disease and huge starch balls that sit in your tummy for years.

Hi, Fran.
Doughnuts for everyone! Holes for none….

Where is Donut Man located? Are they open late? I was just wondering how to celebrate Ned’s victory and those strawberry filled donuts sound lovely.
New thread! Sweet!

How about ‘holes for Joe? Perhaps his next campaign slogan.
OK, I am tapping my toes in an….tici….pation.
Numbers please?
John Casper @ 63
You know, it’s funny…
Or maybe it’s a Texas thing…
Or a blue-collar thing…
But most of my co-workers at my unionized shop don’t know who the local, state or national Union folks endorse for any office, much less give a shit. We vote the way we want.
This is what I’ve never understood about endorsements from any organization. They’re like the endorsements in the paper–people might notice what these people say, but it’s not a guarantee of votes.
I can imagine that a LOT of halfway aware union people were wondering WTF was up with their unoin’s endorsing RGJoe, when he demonstrated every day that he was no friend of working class Americans. It’s about then that you wonder if your union “leaders” have an effin’ clue about anything…and if the reason they can’t get shit done for the rank-and-file is because they’re in bed with their corporate masters, like everyone else.
Markos did good !
John Casper @ 74
Thank you for your kindness John. One more surgery to go(we hope)He is out of the ICU

Yeah Markos did well and debunked the website bullshit and got in the statement the blogs will be demonized either way because DC doesn’t like people powered politics!
Great Job defending our pups!

we should make rick santorum empty house headgear. real big fanciful hats with houses and unmown grass and unread newspapers and mail spread on the brim.

Has anyone got a link for a site that’s posting official results as they come in, like the CT elections folks?

I set the tivo for it from work (I’ve got a hacked series 1 with tivoweb), but I’m sure someone else will be on it before I could get home, grab it off the box, transcode, and up it.
MsAnnaNOLA @ 66
An “elephant ear” is a wrinkly platter of deep-fried dough the size of a dinner plate, thus the name. When I was a kid we used to have them with fruit spread on top, like cherry pie filling. definitely not the same as those apple fritters they sell at starbucks.
And re: king cakes, who got the jesus? The first king cake I ever shared, the jesus was in my piece, but the company went out of business before my turn came around the next year :-/

Loose-lipped election officials were buzzing this afternoon with news of absentee ballot victories across the state for challenger Ned Lamont. Some were narrow, but most were decisive.
Millineryman 99
will do that! the next game is on!
C&L will have Markos up soon.
LJ/Aquaria @ 102
The site seems to be burping at the moment. Either heavy traffic or maybe they’re in the process of uploading info.
Great squirrel, this is going to be fun.
Ooh Channel 3 here is reporting in ticker fashion.
Lamont 60% to Joe’s 40% with 3% of the vote in!
Interesting…
we get web hic-cups..do we start making a bunch of baseless accusations?
He deserves to lose.

Doesn’t mean anything really unless we know what districts are in that number.
I voted for Ned for one reason “Power corrupts”.
Joe had his shot, now that his wife is a lobbyist, that’s it, he’s done.
Hope Lamont wins big- Joe backs out- and this whole bloody mess can get over.
Help! I can’t get into the comments on either of the two threads above this one!
Anybody else having that problem?
Neurophius…having a problem now with the current thread. OMG we are crashing FDL with this election!
Christy.
A thot on coverage, speed & quantity limits, & stuff (not a techie, alas):
Things were REALLY slow loading today, & we’ve got broadband here, usually quickasawink.
Noticed you guys tried to direct traffic a bit(?) by opening many more threads, way closer together timewise than ‘usual’.
Wouldn’t that just tempt folk both sympathetic & parasitic, & possibly predatory, to open as many windows at a time as possible, to track all the action &/or cause trubble for u?
No clue here how all the toobes work but, in the interest of keeping you up & running, thot I’d mention my concern, in case it could unduly strain you & us.
Traffic here surely outdid the NJTurnpike rushhour many times over, today. WOW! u’ve hatched a monster. congrats, eek. *g*
Did I ever say THANKYOU?!
Can’t get on the top thread comments. The site is not necessarily updating comments either.
