11:01pm: We’re all anxiously waiting the announcement here. We’ve been given the 20 minute warning and the word is that the thing that’s holding us up is that Lieberman is refusing to concede.
11:03pm: Lieberman has taken the podium. UGH!! He just called it "a much closer race than the pundits were predicting"?!
Oh, fuck this guy. He’s bloviating about how this is just the end of the "first half".
He’s announcing his independent run. And we’re just going to have to kick his ass again. The arrogance! The delusional dickweed!
Shit. Somebody just sloshed beer on my keyboard.
11:08pm: I’m in a room with a bunch of very angry people right now. And my keyboard isn’t responding properly now that it’s soaked in beer. Someone in the room just said, "This is like watching your old uncle soil himself!"
That was the longest concession speech I’ve ever heard. I can only hope that someone from the national party will pull the plug on him.
Gotta walk away from the computer. I’m ready to punch somebody.
11:17pm: Here’s Ned. Gonna go hear the speech.
11:30pm: Now THAT was a speech. As soon as it comes up in YouTube, I’ll post it here.
We’re gonna bring the fight to Joe. In the mean time, here’s what YOU can do. Go here and write to Harry Reid. Now that Joe isn’t a Democrat, he needs to be stripped of all his committee memberships. And remember that the Democratic party has to get behind the winner of the Democratic primary.
NED!! NED!! NEEEEEEEEDDD!!!!!

all right!!!
LAMONT SURGE!!!!!!!!!!!!
btw just back to the states fm russia. everything is fine.
VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a gentleman Ned is!
So… it’s no longer a loyalty purge to try to take Joe down now, right?
What a difference in speeches. Who was bitter and arrogant? What a classless politician Leverman was! Umm, reminds me of somebody!
And Lamont, what a class act thanking Leverman for his 18 years of service!
That is revolution at it’s finest!!
It’s your fucking turn to be afraid GOP, be very afraid!!
and the MSM is gonna blame the bloggers for Joementum’s loss. Phrase the lie in the negative, that’s the ticket.
“a much closer race than the pundits were predicting”
————————————————————
Reminds me of all the talk about how Bush’s poll numbers are all the way up to 40%. Even if you’re just listening to it in the background, your bullshit detectors go off. I believe someone once called this “the soft bigotry of low expectations”.
Congrats all, congrats…
Not as much of a pwnage as I would have liked, but whatever you can get.
Enjoy the night. You guys deserve it
Gonna have a special Hardball on in about 15 minutes with the focus of course on the CT Dem primary.
I’ll keep one eye here on the blog and the other on Tweety. *g*
You can tell where the power lies by the headlines: it’s all about “Lieberman loses” and not “Lamont wins”.
I’ve been watching the race with baited breath from Texas. I’m thrilled for Connecticut, thrilled for us Democrats–hell, I’m thrilled for America. And thanks to all of y’all at Firedoglake for helping Ned pull it off.
Yay, I’m happy that Ned won. Although I wasn’t too thrilled when he said something like, “I’m gonna make sure the US has the strongest military in the world.” That’s coming from an anti-war candidate? I would rather he advocate slashing the Pentagon budget like 75%. You know?
This will be an effective warning shot to wimp Democrats everywhere that if they support this corrupt Bush administration we’ll find someone to replace them toot sweet. Act like Democrats or find yourselves a new party. You can have differences of opinion with your fellow Democrats, but what you can’t be is a traitor to your party.
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeah!
I’m sure Joementum can always find a job on Faux News when this is over with.
Nice job, everyone. :) I’m off to bed.
Joe in 2000 – gore loses by 600 votes under strange circumstances – crickets
Joe in 2006 – joe loses by 10000 votes – gonna go indy, screw the dems
Difference? In 2000, the dems were either gonna lose the presidency or a safe senate seat. But joe was either gonna be VP or hold a safe senate seat.
SPLAT!
;>)
And Lamont, what a class act thanking Leverman for his 18 years of service!
“I have this lovely gold watch…”
HOW SWEET IT IS !!!!!!!
Can it be possible that we can get the Democratic party back?
Now let’s REALLY turn on the heat and KICK THE FUCKING DLC TO THE CURB!!!!!
Congratulations!
The rest of the Democratic party better start paying attention to the people.
F%#!. the corporate control of the Democratic Party.
This was an excellent night for not only Connecticut, but for democracy and bloggers everywhere.
As Kos said earlier tonight:
THANKS TO THE NUTMEGGERS
Good lord this site was busy tonight. Most of the time I couldn’t break on through to the other side. What the heck is it going to be like on election day?
Oh and
WAY TO FUCKING GO NED!!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!
YYYYEEEEAAAHHHH!!! This is just the beginning! If whiney Joe thought this primary was tough…. he’s about to find out just how many fair weather friends he has…
NED! NED! NED! NED! NED! NED! NED!
Lieberman, the odious toad, got exactly what he deserved. May this be the beginning of we the people taking back our government. All the other greedy power hungry fuckers, be on notice. Your asses are next!
A strong military and anti-war arren’t incompatible.
You have to be prepared, in case you’re attacked.
The problem is that we’ve been too prepared, in almost all cases–more tanks and planes than we probably need.
And too little, in the ways that matter–e.g., infrastructure like factories to gin up if someone attacks us first and armor for soldiers.
Here’s what I wrote:
Joe Lieberman has decided that he’s going to be a sore loser, take his ball, and run for Senate as an independent. Unless I am mistaken, that means he cannot be elected to represent Connnecticut in the senate as a Democrat – period.
Please use your position as Minority Leader to immediately remove Mr. Lieberman from any commmittee memberships, chairs, or other leadership positions. He has earned the scorn of all moderates and progressive Democrats for refusing to accept the will of the people and proving that instead, he’ll do anything to retain the only thing that matters to him now – power.
tomorrow morning, Senate Dems, you will hear us ROAR:
NED LAMONT !!!!!!
Thank you FDL for all that you have done for Connecticut.
VICTORY!! Enjoy yourselves! You deserve it.
What’s next?
Bobo Brooks will commit ritual seppuku on The News Hour.
VICTORY !!
what an incredible sore loser that other candidate was. what was his name again?
Watching Ned Lamonts victory speech was like watching Mr Smith get ready to go to washington
Great Speech….
Phoenix Woman @ 27
Tonight is for celebrating. Until Joe makes it official, just kick back and enjoy a beer. He hasn’t filed yet, and there’s going to be a lot of behind the scenes action late tonight and early tomorrow morning.
TRex,
Tip up your keyboard and toast the terrific work of yourself and all the Lamont supporters who helped make this happen.
Next step, get Joe to respect Democrats and democracy.
Media side comment: The grey lady got it pretty much balanced in an article just posted:
“The Lieberman advisers said they had no evidence implicating the Lamont campaign and could not explain the precise nature of the problem, except to say that the campaign server’s bandwidth had been overwhelmed.
Lamont aides and Internet bloggers who oppose the senator said the problem appeared to be that the Lieberman campaign did not spend enough money for a Web site that could handle high traffic. “
I doubt Lieberman will make it all the way to November. Running on his own will just be too hard, and considering how poorly he ran his campaign during the primary I don’t expect any better when he has little or no political machinery at his disposal.
The big question now is how much damage he does to Democrats in the state during his petulant storming around. He needs to be completely destroyed very early, by having all of his committee assignments in the Senate taken from him and being cut off from the big names in the party. Are you listening, Bill Clinton, Max Cleland and Barbara Boxer?
Joe Lieberman is employing scorched earth tactics, he has to be responded to in kind.
I have already written to Senator Reid.
Kudos to Jane, TRex and all the other volunteers.
YEEEAARRRGGGGHHH!
And a big ‘ol Dean scream for Ned Lamont!
stunned i am. i was so ready to loudly berate any apologist who saw a lamont loss as a victory non-the-less. all the marbles indeed. i dare say i feel a wiff of hope for the first time in ages.
Jim Hightower had a book, “If the Gods Had Meant Us to Vote, They Would Have Given Us Candidates.”
Perhaps they smiled on us today. I’m trying to imagine what it must be like to vote for a Dem without holding my nose. I’ve forgotten what it was like!
Thank you Jane, TRex, Christy and all the many fdl-ers in CT for all your hard work in GOTV for Lamont — and for being such passionate advocates for people-powered politics.
Just watched Kos on Countdown via Crooks & Liars. Wow! He’s awesome.
Poor HoJo … a santimonious, shrill sore-loser right to the bitter end. But he can’t help it, he’s been blinded by his own ego. Unfortunately, it plays right into Karl Rove’s playbook for the November elections. The “weak on national security Democrats” vs. the last Democrat (neocon shill) standing strong for America. So, now we know for sure that HoJo is the Trojan Horse that we always thought he was. HoJo’s Indie bid must have made Karl Rove’s night.
Can we please start helping Pederson in AZ against that bootlicker Kyl?
Pederson needs to start talking like Lamont!
David Ehrenstein @ 36
You know, I was heading to bed, but I’ll definitely stay up for that.
yeah, I wonder whose calls that other candidate is ducking this evening:
Senator, it’s President Clinton on the phone?
Tell him I’m busy!
Senator, it’s Senator Clinton on the phone?
Tell her I’m busy!
Senator, it’s Leader Reid on the phone?
Tell him I’m busy!
Gee…this makes Joe Lieberman a three time loser…
VP 2000
Pres 2004
Senate 2006
You’d think he’d take the hint…maybe there’s a nice drain commissioner job he could run for!
Juan Carlos!
Fucking Bayerstein…. You knew better than to hang with that hellion…
Maybe this actually got thru the toobzjam and posted earlier on a thread far, far away, but bears repeating:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14205873/ [cited in this Newsweek online article by Dr. Dean Ornish on coping with stress…great timing!]
And as for J-Lie, methinks he’ll be getting the cold, hard call of reality verrra soon. It doesn’t serve La Hill’s purposes to have voters reminded every single day between now and November that J-Lie lost this election. And why.
No more moral victories!
Only victories that are also moral!
We won, people, we won!
The “weak on national security Democrats” vs. the last Democrat (neocon shill) standing strong for America. So, now we know for sure that HoJo is the Trojan Horse that we always thought he was. HoJo’s Indie bid must have made Karl Rove’s night.
If Joe ends up dropping out of the general, what are the odds that he starts aiding the Republican candidates in some way? Maybe not active campaigning, but positive soundbites and appearances on talking head shows?
Okay everybody, open your windows and doors and crank up Have You Had Enough!
I’m dancin’ tonight! Good thing I’m on the Left Coast and have a couple of hours to unwind before bedtime.
I’ll say it again, OH FRABJOUS DAY!!
Rex. Your posting provides enough of a picture for us to imagine the totally chaotic crazy exhausted and jubulant scene you must be in the middle of right now. I’m sitting here in St Paul MN savoring this evening while listening to crickets in the back yard and a cat purring beside me. Thanks to you all for all the great work!!! Peace.

Rex. Your posting provides enough of a picture for us to imagine the totally chaotic crazy exhausted and jubulant scene you must be in the middle of right now.
I’m kinda picturing everyone just lying on the floor, completely limp, and languidly smoking cigarettes in full-on afterglow mode.
and huge props to this site for its vital role in this victory. in fact, they ain’t got props that big…
just sent this out to Senator Reid:
gbear @ 57
Aw. That made a little pang of missing Gus and Juan stab through me. I’ll see them tomorrow night. They’re in good hands.
Damn. I’m exhausted.
Oh, my gosh, I’m just so happy for Ned, his supporters, the Nutmeg bloggers, TRex who got there, Pach, who gets to use his PLAN A post tomorrow!
but most of all, Christy and Jane, who’ve made a home for all of us. Thanks, WINNERS!
is this thing on
I think we broke a thread there folks
I wonder if Joe’s lovely wife, Hadassa will have her cushy lobbyist job tomorrow?
I absolutely will write Harry Reid, and like I said when Lieberman first announced he was filing for an “insurance policy”, if the Democrats were serious about taking back Congress and digging this country out of the stinking GOP ditch, Reid, Howard Dean, Bill Clinton, and other party leaders would be on the air tomorrow to spell things out in big capital letters that ANYBODY who runs against the Democratic candidate in November is OUT of the party for good.
Do what you want, Joe, but get one thing crystal effin’ clear. Run against your own party in November and you’re dead to us… got it? You’re a freakin’ pariah. No financial support ever again. No more Bubba and Barbara Boxer to hold your hand. No caucusing. No committee seniority. Nothin’.
I do believe that the events of tonight caused a few dropped weenies in DC.
In more ways than one…
eric @ 16
You’re right. CNN Breaking News alerts came in with the news about Cynthia McKinney losing quite a while ago, but not a thing about the Lamont victory yet. Maybe Candy Crowley is just too upset to file the news…BWHAHAHAHAHAHA
Best political contribution I ever made. Congratulations to FDL, Spazeboy, T Rex et al for your efforts. And congratulations to all the people of CT. You made history today.
(Shaking my head in disbelief)
Jane, you put your heart (and your poodles) into this race, and I’m so glad you’ve been rewarded.
What do the poodles get?
Seriously, your dedication has been a blessing for all of us. Thank you.
And for Christy and the rest of the gang, a well-earned toast. And I’ll make it the good stuff!
Hear, hear!
hey joezoe:
feel the Nedmentum
The pressure on Lieberman to drop out has to be swift and overwhelming–the REAL shock and awe, Joe. Write Harry Reid tonight, as many of us have already done. Continue tomorrow morning, afternoon and evening. Don’t allow anyone in the party to even dare think there’s a way to finesse this (poor Chris Dodd!). Al Gore, when are you coming to Connecticut to campaign for Lamont? I hope it’s this week….
go NED!
I can’t believe that the WATB couldn’t help but try to paint the website issue as Lamont’s doing… Sore Loserman!
MY LETTER TO HARRY REID:
Joe Lieberman has resigned his membership in the Democratic party. His role in the committee memberships needs to be questioned. I hope you put serious consideration into what this means for the Democratic party.
Please show your support for Ned Lamont, the new Democratic Senate Challenger in the fine state of CT. He represents more than just CT voters, Ned represents the majority of highly educated, artistically able, peace loving Americans.
We should no longer be hoodwinked into Middle Eastern Affairs – We should remove our dependence on petroleum products and move to biomass or carbohydrate fuel technologies. As much as I want to see peace on Earth and Terrorism brought to a minimum. Our efforts in the Middle East are self serving and lack perspective. Our current failures abroad represent our failures at home. Most notably education and health care. Greed is a mental illness. It has wrecked havoc on our society. As a fully self-sustaining, highly educated, multi-lingual, broad faced nation. We could become the most powerful, peaceful, and positive society on the Earth.
Lets put our focus here on domestic issues. I could care less about the middle east. I love people but I feel there is no need for us to be there. If we quit giving them our money and we remove our interests there then we will be safer from terrorism. Let them fight themselves to the bone and later ask us for humanitarian aid. Which we will ALWAYS provide.
Get something moving, don’t lets this continual short sighted BS drag our world further into the mud. It would be nice to maintain a peaceful human species.
Thank you for your time,
–
The cocktail weenies will taste of ashes tomorrow.
Never EVER underestimate the power of the Rovian right.
They want Lieberman. If they have to finance his “independent” run themselves, they will.
Kos is right. Lieberman will tell Clinton, Schumer, Dodd, et al to fuck off.
Democratic support and money will dry up.
BUT IT WON’T MATTER.
I’m glad we won. It’s a huge actual AND symbolic victory…and a moral one.
But if Joe doesn’t get out–and there’s zero indication that he will–the Roving maniacs will make sure he’s well financed.
Do not count Joe out. Hate to say it. But don’t.
Woo-hoo! (from Grand Teton National Park, checking in wireless in the upscale hotel lobby)
I’m a witness to history.
I’ve written Reid.
Thank you.
I have hope.
so it’s not too early to call Boxer and Reid to tell them to toss joezoe from the DEMOCRATIC PARTY NOW
So Judas Joe can leverage the GOP infrastructure in CT? What’s second prize, another smooch from the Chimp?
I agree entirely, Penman.
The Rs don’t put their muscle behind a D without a reason. A big one.
We must watch them carefully. Lieberman’s already shown that he’s started adopting some of their tactics. He’s only going to get worse, because it’s not just politics to him. Now, it’s personal. Of course, that means he’ll also make some mistakes.
The fun is only just beginning.
So, the Republicans are really happy about Holy Joe’s independent run? Two pro-war candidates in the race and one anti-war candidate increases their chances at a pick-up? Yeah right. They’re measuring his ass for a chair at Fox News right now.
I wonder if Reid will hang back from yanking Joe’s committee memberships for fear that Joe will caucus with the Republicans if he wins.
I think he should probably just assume that anyway.
Don’t miss this gem at Billmon.
Heh, indeedy!
Thanks for the link. My email to Harry Reid:
Dear Senator Reid,
I don’t envy you this situation, but I must ask, as a lifelong Democrat, that you reassign Senator Lieberman’s committee memberships as soon as the former Democrat files as an Independent.
I’ve appreciated the good fights you’ve given Bush these past few years. To be frank, I wanted far more, but your commitment to the role of the Congress has been heartening. If Senator Lieberman turns his back on the Democratic Party, please do not turn your back on the Democratic base. Lamont won because the rank and file Democrats have had it, and because we’re right to be this adamant for change.
The passion for change that fueled Lamont’s win is needed for the other Democratic races, including my challenger, David Roth.
Please make a clean break from Joe. He’s clearly made one from us.
In sincere sympathy for the headaches you must suffer,
xx

I am SOOOO proud of what we accomplished today! And I feel so… validated after taking the day off, driving from NYC to Norwalk, and hitting the phone banks for Ned.
One woman I called said she’d been planning to vote for Ned, but she threatened to vote against him if she received any more phone calls.
I replied that at least with the Lamont campaign, the calls are from human beings, not robots. She laughed and agreed.
That little exchange to me was emblematic of what this campaign has been about. Joe thought he could push a button and the voters would line up like George Romero zombies. But in the end, the Lamont edge was the human connection.
People of Connecticut, thank you and good night.

Hi Z, greenman here.
No matter how badly Ned’s win will be painted by the MSM, keep telling them how far behind the curve they are.
Thanks to everyone who was in a position to bring this about, and keep it up. Joe is a loser, baby. Time to finish him off. Use him like the Bush voodoo doll that he is.
Jane, Christy, Pach, TRex and all the Nutmeggers and pups who worked, contributed, revved up good karma…job well done, day well ended.
As for J-Lie, pride goeth before the fool.
first, YESSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! HUGE! God bless the voters of Connecticut!
second, however, TRex: you’re a great guy but, I’m sorry, please don’t blog while you’re drunk. You put your heart and soul into this venture, like a whole lot of other people but fucking in the headliner will not go well with too many of the voters we need. And Jomentum will always be Jomentum, so don’t act offended if he didn’t change tonight. Pat him on the back. That’ll just add salt to his wounds.
Seven of Six @ 47.
Amen to that! Kyl has got to GO! Hayworth and John I never met a war i din’t like McCain too. F**K them all. AZ needs some help a la a Lamont style netroots revolt.
Oh, and Go Janet Napalatano!!
Anyone know how Joe financed the gathering of enough signatures to run as an Independent?
Does he have to seperate out the money for a Dem primary race and/ or Senate race from what he needs to run against the duly elected Dem candidate?
Any National money going to be used against the party?
Where did all the money go?
soyinkafan @ 9:04—great letter.
Another Democrat who my fellow Californians might want to write is Barbara Boxer.
http://boxer.senate.gov/contact/email/policy.cfm
Let her know that we expect her to be in Connecticut this fall to campaign for Ned Lamont.
F’in Librul @ 33
Great note – I am about to send something similar to Senator Dodd and Senator Reid.
I am really speechless right now. I knew Lieberman was a vindictive ass, but didn’t think he would display his true self to the extent he did tonight. His nasty, bitter rant was almost as bad as Nixon’s “you won’t have me to kick around anymore” concession speech. At least Nixon accepted his defeat.
Lierman absolutely should be stripped of all his power in the Senate once he officially declares himself an Independent. It happened to Senator Jeffords when he switched from Rep to Independent – I’m sure there are rules about such things.
A lot is riding on how the Dem party responds to Lamont & Lierman in the next few days.
Anyone know how Joe financed the gathering of enough signatures to run as an Independent?
Webhosting savings.
Hi, greenman! Long time no see.

Latest NYT online headline is “Lamont Defeats Lieberman in Primary” .. lead story above the fold.
WaPo says “Lieberman Concedes to Lamont…”
Lierman absolutely should be stripped of all his power in the Senate once he officially declares himself an Independent. It happened to Senator Jeffords when he switched from Rep to Independent
Jeffords caucused with the other team, though. Lieberman still claims he would caucus with the Dems (I’m skeptical).
Seven of Six @

What you said! God, I’d love to see Kyl go down.
Lieberman is treating this as a do-over. The only do-over in politics is the next election cycle.
I expect every Democrat in public life to denounce Lieberman’s bid for the seat as an independent – That means Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd and all other Democratic politicians in Connecticut, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean, and every Democrat in between.
I expect to see them by tomorrow morning, on all of the news programs, telling Lieberman to forget about this bid as an independent.
None of the cable news programs carried the speeches, and they just barely reported the outcome of the race. This tells me that there will be a behind-the-scenes effort by Big Business to keep Lieberman in the race.
Can you imagine what George W. Bush, Karl Rove, and the GOP would have done and said, about loyalty, if a competitor who lost a primary decided to run as an independent?
Where is that discipline and loyalty in the Democratic Party?
Wish I were a better writer, but I sent off the following a couple of minutes ago:
Dear Senator Reid:
After the victory tonight by Ned Lamont in the Senate primary in Connecticut, Joe Lieberman stated that he would run in the November general election as an independent, thereby threatening the Democratic party’s control of that Senate seat.
Mr. Lieberman may be a friend to some in Congress, but he is hurting the Democratic party as a whole now, and he needs to be stripped of all his committee assignments. Additionally, the entire Democratic Party establishment must immediately and loudly announce their support of Mr. Lamont’s candidacy.
At such a critical time in our country’s history, it would be a mistake of mammoth proportions to allow Mr. Lieberman to retain his committee posts while he attempts to defeat the choice of the Democratic Party in Connecticut.
I have been very proud to have you as our Minority Leader, but I’d be even prouder if you were the Majority Leader in November. Believe me, the progressives in this country are fired up, and will be with you all the way to November and beyond. Please don’t let us down.
http://www.SoreLooserman.com (yes, dammit, the spelling is wrong but what-the-hell — it cost me $9.20 and I still want to use it!)
Joe’s next big mistake is thinking all those folks who voted for him now will vote for him in the fall. Once it becomes painfully obvious that he really IS a Republican in Dems clothing a lot of those people are going to be thinking they have egg on their face. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice…
My note to Reid:
Also sent a note to the DSCC that my expectation is rapid and unequivocal support for Mr. Lamont.
Good job to all in Connecticut – but this thing ain’t half over. If the Dem leadership cannot unite on this simple concept ….. I just don’t know.

Thank you, citizens of Connecticut; the upcoming wheedling and needling of Joe by the Dems (the real ones) should give you some time to rest before November.
Thanks, FDL and the entire blog community. Power to the people, finally, again. (And we don’t get to rest…).
And thank you, Ned Lamont. Amen.

I don’t think it’s Democratic votes Joe is counting on.
I heard the sound of gates crashing. And I like it.
Earlier this evening, before any results were known, the Columbia County (NY) Democratic Committee passed a resolution, which will be conveyed tomorrow morning to our Senator and DSCC Chair Chuck Schumer, calling on the DSCC to support the winner of tonight’s primary. Tonight was the first time our committee has met in several weeks, or we would have made an earlier statement, as several of us did individually. The resolution states our collective position, but does not really reflect the deep offense that most members feel about the DSCC’s apparent contempt for the rank and file of the Democratic Party. I have spoken to many Democrats about this, some of whom are MAJOR, NYC-based financial supporters of the Democratic Party, and they are almost universally shocked and infuriated by the DSCC’s stance on this.
Resolution of the Columbia County Democratic Committee, passed August 8, 2006. To be conveyed to Senator Chuck Schumer and the DSCC:
It is the view of the Columbia County (New York) Democratic Committee that respect for the Democratic Party organization and the democratic process demands that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) support the Democratic candidates chosen by the full party membership, and that therefore, the DSCC should immediately and unequivocally commit itself and its resources to supporting the winner of the Democratic Primary Election for United States Senate in the State of Connecticut.

fiance’s friend Storm is on that Wanna Be A Roxstar show on CBS singing We are The Champions — my fave political winning night song!
twolf1 at 133 — well, we’d need more ads then, wouldn’t we? lol Some weeks, I wonder how we make our server rent. But today, all that budget fretting seems trivial in teh face of this win against some seriously long odds. This makes up, a bit anyway, for 2004. ;-)
AIPAC cannot be happy.
Feh.
Firepups:
Please, please take the time to write Senator Reid. We now must take the next step of going after Democrats to ensure that they’re not complicit in Joe’s sham Cut-And-Run Party of One.
It just takes a moment, and the link needed is in the body of this post.
Thanks.
Historic 43% turnout tonight according to the secretary of the state. Hotchie Motchie!
All here from California need to go here and pressure Boxer (who has so often called Lieberman his close friend and ally) to politely (or unpolitely – whatever) tell Lieberman he needs to stop being the egocentric prick that he is, step aside, and let Lamont run without Lieberman on the ballot.
I already wrote her, and will continue to badger her until she and the rest of the Democrat elite push Lieberdork out
awesome victory!! congrats Ned and FDL
Ivy @ 105
Ya need to check out what’s happening down here in Texas. We had Scottie McClellan’s Mom bolt the GOP, and hoo-boy, has the fur been a’flyin’ ever since!
The only redeeming thing about Scottie’s Mom is that she pulls some stunts that makes the Rs tremble in their boots a little, you know, letting them know she can fight ‘em, their way, because, well, she’s been one of ‘em! She can get that shiv in there but good sometimes. I’ll have to find some of the examples, because they’re worth studying.
Woo Hoo! Delurking to say I am thrilled about Lamont winning. I watched Lamont’s speech and thought he was fantastic. Truly pounded the healthcare crisis, Iraq, I just wish I had a Senator from Louisiana like that.
Tuned in to Olberman and Kos was on. Is is finally time for sanity?
CatStaff @ 106
CatStaff – you write just fine.
Sorry, sometimes you can only say it with a picture. Santa comes early for the netroots as “deer” old Joe crashes and burns and incumbents everywhere cry, “Oh! Oh! Oh!” Here’s to control of Congress and impeaching Cheney first!
Congratulations to Ned and the Nedheads!
And a big fat woot to Jane and everyone at FDL who took up this cause from the very start.
Hi Shoe at 141
Glad I’m not the only one that caught thAT.
And thanks for your kindness yesterday.
Any ideas out there for a new theme float to follow turncoat
Joe around Ct. between now and the November election.
The Kiss float truly kept him off balance. Now that he’s come
out and betrayed, he has shown his loyalty to the neo-cons
and GWBush and co. Some new image to tar him quckly so
it sticks. How about a contest like the one for Cheney held some
time ago. Just some thoughts.
…and after you write to Harry Reid, please visit the PayPal button and give Jane and Christy some certified prop$.
They’ve more than earned it!
Eli @ 120
You’re absolutly right of course and I should have elaborated. What I’m speculating is that Joe is probably thinking he can have his cake and eat it too by counting on his current supporters while courting Republican votes at the same time. Think that will play very well in CT?
Let’s collect funds for more FDL servers or November will be melt down. Major props to the Hartford Courant’s web site for staying up and providing results when everyone else’s site was buried.
Cheers to all Fire Pups
Ken Dow 9:15 pm — Wow. WOW. I hadn’t thought of that one, have our county and state party conventions coming up yet this month.
If you don’t mind I’m going to “lift” chunks of that resolution and draft one to fit our local party here in Michigan, will forward to other DFA folks who are Dem Party activists to get this in their local conventions and to state platform.
kate o’beirne’s teeth @ 115
Well, it’s A B O U T time you teefies put in a word.
hurm, y’ownseffs!
Sam @ 155
How about a Benedict Joe float?
Yeah, CHS: looks like our biggest ever traffic day? Imagine what it would be if we had not been down due to flood during the rush.
Christy,
a question I asked at the end of the last thread where are the national organizations like NARAL now. Maybe Jane could give them a gentle nudge?
WOOO HOOOOO !!!!
Go NED !!!
Hugh at 163 — oh, there will be a nudge, all right…
*ilson46201 @ 108
*ilson…what am I chopped liver? Did you see me comment offering help?
Thank you, from the bottom of the world and the bottom of my heart. Thank you. Thank you. My husband works in an environmental field and his jobs totally dried up with Bush in the White House, just as they did in the days of Reagan and Gorsuch. Here’s to hoping there is enough change that we can go back to protecting the water and air of the US (and we can come back home someday). (Still, and for all that, the spring flowers are starting to bloom and it is a beautiful land….didn’t mean to sound ungrateful).
But thanks again for the unmeasurable good work…..
The fight is not over. It’s over in November. All pressure must be put on Dems everywhere to renounce Loserman and support Lamont. Don’t forget that Loserman will mount a well financed vicious, lying campaign, just like a real Rethug would if he stays in, good of the party be damned. Call and write every Dem officeholder you know and especially your Senator and Rep and the party leaders to throw their real support to Ned and encourage Joe to drop out.
Ready for the
SNOOPY DANCE!!!!
Anybody got a video or an mp3?
DEMOCRACY!!! LAMONT!!! FDL!!! ROOTZ!!!
Hi Pach, you’re doing amazing work :D
superb work all around. outstanding!
and now we get to beat joe and delay into the ground twice in one year!
I wonder if the HUman Rights Campaign needs another
bitchslapgentle nudge.a domain name for a year just costs $9.20 … I forward them to the appropriate website hosted by somebody else like http://www.CT4Lamont.com which is actually Ned’s official site. I just own the name but dont have to pay for hosting …
To all the FireDogs and Nutmeggers who supported Ned Lamont: walk tall, you’re heroes!
AIPAC will be putting pressure on other dems in D.C. to either stay out and stay with Joe. There will be serious consequences to those dems that go for Lamont. Watch for AIPAC to ask for a meeting with Lamont. Soon.
Christy,
LOL, hopefully large blunt instruments will be involved!
egregious, welcome back from Rossiya, glad to hear things are better, and especially glad there is such good news for you to come back to.
I just e-mailed Harry Reid, per the link above. Hope everyone else does so as well, including all of you lurkers! Lieberman either supports the Democratic nominee, or Harry Reid needs to put a boot print on Joe’s backside as a farewell from the Democratic Party!!!
HopeSprings – how are you doin’ tonight?
I’m basking in the glow of Ned.
“And? Loving it!”
Lieberman. *sigh* What a putz.
I think the Kiss float is still perfect for dogging Lieberman. Keep tying him to Bush and the GOP. And that thing (including the truck!) is now political history, it better be preserved.

Congrats fdl for 20,000,000 pages visited!
If you’re writing to Harry Reid, drop Nancy Pelosi a line too. And Rahm Emmanuel at the DCCC. Those three CT House seats are winnable, and distractions in the form of Lieberman aren’t wanted.
Personally, I think the ‘Joe for Joe’ party will be defunct by the weekend.
What will NARAL do? Hadn’t thought of that delicious decision. Ummm.
Just sent this to the DNC and my senator, Barbara Boxer:
“Please thank Senator Lieberman for his service to the country and do everything in your power (and do it publicly) to make sure he knows the time for that service is over.
The Democratic voters of Connecticut have spoken and it is imperative that Joe Lieberman understand that if he runs, he will have no support from the Democratic leadership and as a consequence of his opposition to the nominated Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate for Connecticut, he will lose all Senate committee and caucus assignments.
I am a lifelong Democrat who hopes to see some life put back in the Democratic party.”
It goes to Harry Reid too.

Christy I know I’m newish but my friend nate has a “paypal” thingy at his site and I give to it. I would give to one here as well..Paypal please? Ok wait…just saw the paypal. But it doesn’t say anything. Nate’s Says something like “Help keep InTheirFace going!” It has his little logo, etc
Can’t we add that here??

You’d bid me farewell
There’s a lesson to be learned from this
And I’ve learned it very well.
Now I know you’re not the only
Starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again
It’s all the same to me
And I think it’s going to be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball.
You never cared
For secrets I’d confide
For you I’m just an ornament
Something for your pride
Always running, never caring
That’s the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time
Were all you had to give
And I think it’s going to be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball.
The story’s in the past
With nothing to recall
I’ve got my life to live
And I don’t need you at all
The roller coaster ride we took
Is nearly at an end
I bought my ticket with my tears
That’s all I’m going to spend
And I think it’s going to be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball.
Oh, I think it’s going to be alright
Yeah, the worst is over now
The morning sun is shining
Like a red rubber ball.
FDL was a key part in making this victory for democracy and America happen. It’s the first step of many needed to take the country back. I just threw a little cash into their paypal jar but they deserve a lot more. If you feel as I do (and judging by the massive amount of comments, you do), give what you can, just click the little paypal link at the top of the right hand side-bar. Every little bit will help. Consider it an investment in your future and the future of your children and grandchildren.
It feels so good but the fight has just begun.
no matter if he is Republican Independent or Democrat lets get R.I.D of joe.

well then, we better get a paypal link started now, if we gotta buy the truck
you wouldn’t want somebody driving around in our history, would you ???
and nobody mention that “Historic” thing again until we’re done negotiating a purchase price, Okay ???
Nobody’s mentioned Ned’s email yet:
We won!
There’s been a lot said in the media about you, about me and about this race. But let me cut right through it and tell you what just happened.
Tonight’s results show clearly and overwhelmingly one simple fact: democracy works. Connecticut came alive with participation and passion. Together, Democrats decided that it’s time for a change.
It’s been a spirited campaign, but today we are all Democrats.
Unfortunately, though, Joe Lieberman has announced his intention to run as an independent.
I’ve said from the beginning, even when Joe Lieberman had a 50-point lead in the polls, that I would respect the outcome of this race. I even said that if Joe Lieberman won the Democratic nomination, I’d campaign for him through the fall to turn out votes for the Democrat.
We Democrats have a process for choosing our nominee, and we all ought to respect the outcome. I hope that over the course of the coming days, Joe’s friends, neighbors and constituents will prevail upon him to reconsider and unite with the Democrats across Connecticut who voted for change tonight.
Joe needs to hear from you. Please send him a message asking him to respect the voters — we will deliver your note and post it on our web site:
http://www.nedlamont.com/respectvoters
Victory has never been a sure thing — not even close. Back when I decided to run, I had no idea how many people felt the same way I did. But there was no choice — I couldn’t sit by while our Senator continued to aid and abet this president, his administration, and its course in Iraq.
When this campaign started, we were just a blip on the radar. We were 50 points down in the polls and our operation was little more than a few card tables and bumper stickers. Just a few months later, we have turned politics on its head.
The establishment and the pundits have their own ideas about this race, but don’t forget the real story. It’s a story of expanding the political process and demanding a real, substantive debate on the things that matter to real people.
I’ve met so many people and had so many conversations about their hopes for a better America — about the war, about their job security, about their children’s future. But what’s been so special about this campaign is the fact that my conversations are just a tiny fraction of what’s happened across Connecticut. People are having these conversations with each other again, and our political process is better for it.
No matter the issue, one thing is clear: we’ve brought new energy to our democracy. And that’s the type of victory where we all win.
Please send him a note asking him to respect the voters now:
http://www.nedlamont.com/respectvoters
So many people have put so much into this campaign — on both sides.
I hope that we can persuade Joe to not throw all that work away. The Democratic Party and our democratic process will benefit.
Thank you for all that you have done so far, and I will be in touch again soon.
Ned
Let’s focus on getting other Dems to talk some sense into Joe – that should be our first priority.
What an incredible moon above in the sky right now, shining down on a whole new terrain.
From here on out, we absolutely must explain to those potential swing voters who are thinking right now of crossing over that tonight was an example of the Democratic Party and progressives at large cleaning house. We know how to deal with folks who do not look out for the best interests of their constituents, who rubber stamp bad policy, who do not do their jobs by holding the Executive Office accountable. We find better qualified candidates and replace the deadwood through democratic (little d) policies.
We ask them to vote for people who actually understand, apply and protect democracy.
THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!!!
Wrote to Boxer before I saw this thread . . .
Reminded her of my displeasure at her earlier campaiging, and hoped she’d try to talk Joe out of his misguided run against the party.
And I did it politely. It took several drafts, but I think I got there.
Go TRex!

Just throw a Redcoat and a Hessian style hat on Joe on the Kiss Float. They will get the message in the Northeast.
Way to go everyone who helped with the campaign. It is going to be really interesting to see where the power brokers in the Democratic party come down.
Why have a primary if the loser can just declare calvinball and keep running? We need some party discipline here. Harry, whack Joe with a stick.
If you are lucky enough to have a Democratic senator write them immediately urging them to denounce Judas Joe’s indy run. I just wrote Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein. Okay,I stole the Judas Joe gag from an earlier post..I think it’s perfect
Sweet, the victory.
Taste it, and cherish the memory.
Take a deeeeeeeep breath.
Now, get ready. What’s next?

Media side comment: The grey lady got it pretty much balanced in an article just posted:
“The Lieberman advisers said they had no evidence implicating the Lamont campaign and could not explain the precise nature of the problem, except to say that the campaign server& bandwidth had been overwhelmed.
The Statement is correct BUT why did LIEberman
continue to say his website was HACKED. He
just can’t tell the truth. If he or his committee continue along this line, Ned had better start beating the bushes to shut him up.
Slander is something that should not be used in this campaign.
Congratulation to all of you who worked so hard for Ned and you deserve a few days to relax. It was a tough fight, but because of what you did, the win was yours. Enjoy it.
In a few days the organization will have to sit down and rework some of the things they did to increase Ned’s vote. Should be a little easier the second time around…but somehow Joe has to be muzzled!
Have fun tonight….wish I was there too.
Maureen
Pelosi announced earlier this evening that she will completely support the winner of the primary. She explicitly said that if Joe wants to run as an Independent, that would be “unfortunate.”
3 incumbents loose tonight. You think D.C. will get the message soon that we are tired of them? Nah – My bet is that they will still ignore us. So be it – the netroots made a enormous victory tonight and the people are standing up. Joe called this old fashioned “partisan” politics in his speech tonight. Actually this is what politics should be – the people making the choice.
YES!
Ok, so now we need what, 20 more? or was it all 50. Sorry, I can dream.
cbl: I forgot about that post. That was Internet eons ago. Is that the “ROOTS!” post?
Wooo-hoooo from Texas to Connectcicut and to Jane and Christy and TRex and Pach and, and, and, oh God it’s late and I’m tipsy with happiness (nothing liquid)andso proud to be a part of this group, even if I’ve only coughed up a little cash and written some e-mails.
I’m scheduling election day as a day off, though. Gotta make time.

I’m better thank you. I had a melt-down yesterday because of the news from Dr. Turtle. He is not very well. Today’s phone call was better but still not good. I’m almost on my way to germany to help .
But tonight I am celebrating the taking back of our country-one step at a time-from the criminals that run it (into the ground).
Thanks so much Shoe, you’re a jewel.
Grats all you guys up in CT for your hard work!
Just sent Mr. Harry Reid a nice little letter. Now Sore Loserman (I) CT, should just be a good boy and start his packing.
Prof, great to hear from you. I’m jealous as can be of anyone in the shadow of the Teton’s.
SharonW, thanks for the turnout numbers. That’s what’s got the WH scared, it’s the turnout numbers in an August primary. I think Rumsfeld is gone before November. Everyone in Congress is going to follow Joezoe’s lead: “It’s all Rumsfeld’s fault and we want a ’speedy’ end to the war.”
What happened in the Rhode Island Primary?

Give HIM hell, Harry!
Kick him the hell out.
Whip your caucus into line behind Lamont, the Democratic Party nominee.
“But Harry…Harrrry…it’s my seat! Don’t you see? My seat! Mine! Boo hoo. Harryyyy…”
STFU, you old coot. It’s called democracy.
The Nefarious Leslie @ 189
Let’s focus on getting other Dems to talk some sense into Joe – that should be our first priority.
I hope Ned’s gonna print out those messages and not try to send them via email. Wouldn’t want to be accused of hacking or launching a denial of service attack.
Oh, wait, he’s already been accused of hacking . . .
Still, I hope Ned doesn’t use the computer. The reams of paper will speak volumes, and the delivery would make a great picture for the media!
Hope at 185 — we’ve got one, up in the top right-hand corner of the blog. In the right hand column. We just don’t point it out a lot because neither Jane nor I is altogether comfortable about begging for fundage. *g*
Does anyone have a link to Ned’s victory speech?
Pach–I’ll raise my hand. At first I definitely thought focus should be on the GOP. I remember Mui was even quite unhappy with me in her very polite but determined way.
But some time ago (I’ll leave the comment search to you :) ) I realized I was wrong and the crew here was right. I did penance by phonebanking this weekend…
And thanks for reminding us it’s going to get meaner and nastier. Just filter it out. On to November.
We also need to press the Emmanuel line of attack. Dems can’t hold up Lieberman as a sign of discontent with Republican rule unless Dems now go full bore against Lieberman in the general.
STOP THE PRESSES

I will do it…i missed this letter with all the kerfuffle here. Adding this letter to my list.
You’re a good man, Professor Foland.
Dear Harry Reid,
Now that Joe Lieberman has lost his primary in a legitimate election by and for the People of the State of Connecticut, he must be promptly stipped of all committee chairmanships. The party must IMMEDIATELY reach out to and support Ned Lamont and do EVERYTHING possible to ensure that Ned is elected in November. The party and the will of the people are infinitely more important than the career and entrenchment of an 18 year senate veteran. There is no room for nostalgia or personal loyalty in this fight. If the democrats intend to regain congress they had better rally around the PEOPLE’S CHOICES, fast. THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN. Hopefully, THERE WILL BE MORE PEOPLE SPEAKING NOW that they see how it works. The voters, the citizens, the people have the power, not the wealthy, not the corporations, not the corporatists, not the lobbyists, not the fascists, not the neocons.
THE PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER and they are ready to INVOKE IT.
Here is the content of the email I sent Harry Reid:
Mr Reid,
Now that Joe Lieberman is no longer a Democrat, he needs to be stripped of all his committee memberships. To fail to do so sends a message to the people of Connecticut who fairly and equitably nominated Ned Lamont as their Senate Candidate in 2006: “Screw you, you don’t matter.”
Mr Reid, you don’t want to send that kind of message.
The election of Mr. Lamont as the Democratic candidate for that seat in the Senate should send a clear message to you and the remaining Democratic leadership: we are a force to be reckoned with. The time for bipartisanship has passed, it’s time to stand up and fight. The Democratic party has laid down like dogs for far too long.
Lieberman has turned his back on the Democratic party. The party should return the favor.
Regards,
The Guitar Playing Bastard

Modesty in fundraising is good up to a point. Yes it feels prideful to seek donations. I completely loathe that part of nonprofit work.
However.
A slightly enhanced section with the paypal button might get some attention and cash. It’s almost too subtle now. Ask us! We will contribute.
And thank you for ALL that you do, whether seen or unseen, for your country. This is history in the making, and your work is a huge part of it. Notice the site visit stats when you became a regular poster? Not a coincidence.
Joe must be in a state of shock, and I personally hope that most of K Street is in the same condition. Joe cannot reasonably argue that the Dems didn’t help him. That excuse is now off the table. The idea that the public supports the war in Iraq is also now off the table. The notion that Joe didn’t have enough contributions is also off the table.
The R’s will press Joe to run; they need him now more than ever. And that fact only underscores their failures.
November is looking very, verrrryyyyyyy interesting.
Time for me to go to bed. Gotta get some sleep so I can lurk in the FDL comments. Thank you all! We took the first step.

I don’t know about Rumsfeld. He and Cheney go so far back (and he must know too much about the still-hidden law-breaking going on in the WH). It would be great if they dumped him, but I think it would be too dangerous for them. I’ll be happy to be wrong about this.
(Just wrote Harry Reid too.)

Um, did anyone notice this from Scarborough?
Sent my email through Senator Reid’s site. Had to try a couple times because the site timed out. Must be getting quite a bit of email tonight I’d guess. :)

Breaking News: First Democratic Leader Steps Up
By: John Amato on Tuesday, August 8th, 2006 at 9:38 PM – PDT
In a C&L exclusive,
A check from Hillary Clinton’s HILLPAC is being cut to Ned Lamont for five thousand dollars. She’s the first one to be counted on and make good on her promise to support the winner of the Connecticut primary. We can only hope that the rest of the Democratic Party stands behind Ned in his bid to win the Senate seat.
HopeSpringsATurtle,
I missed the talk about Dr. Turtle last night. I’m so sorry he’s having trouble! Is there anything we can do? Sending good thoughts both your ways.
Wow, you guys put a lot of work into those letters to Sen Reid. Mine read.. Dear Senator, Time to kick some Lieberman butt.
I am so proud of everyone involved in the Lamont campaign. Great job, y’all.
Just emailed Sen. Reid. Feeling quite righteous at the moment.
Oh, yeah -ck-, thanks. But for those who haven’t, I’ve included this from the National Park Service, probably a lot more detail than anyone wants, plus a photo:
….”The Tetons received their name from French-Canadian trappers who accompanied the earliest British expeditions into this territory. As they approached the range from the west, they beheld three towering mountains upon which they bestowed the name of “Trois Tetons” (”Three Breasts”). This romantic designation was readily adopted by the lonely trapping fraternity to whom the sharp snowy peaks (now known as the Grand, Middle and South Tetons) became a beacon to guide them through the hostile wilderness. To the Indians the Tetons were variously known as “The Three Brothers,” “The Hoaryheaded Fathers,” and “Tee Win-at,” meaning “The Pinnacles.” The earliest Americans in the region, being more practical than romantic, could find no better name for the silvery spires than “The Pilot Knobs,” while an official Hudson’s Bay Company map indicates with equal homeliness, “The Three Paps.” The name “Three Tetons” survived, however, and was officially recognized by cartographers. The name first appeared publicly in the Bonneville Map of 1837….”

“Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh — who, like Lieberman, has close ties to moderates within the party but is considering a 2008 presidential bid — quickly announced he would support Lamont.
“Senator Bayh supported Senator Lieberman in the primary because of his respect for Senator Lieberman’s service and their long friendship,” said Bayh spokesman Dan Pfeiffer. “The Democratic voters of Connecticut have spoken, and Senator Bayh respects their choice and will support their nominee.”"
Senator Bayh’s daddy, wherever he is, must be proud of his boy.

Joe? Get lost. Harry? Make it happen.
My (very formal) letter to Senator Reid:
Dear Senator Reid:
I note with great interest this evening the results of the Democratic Primary in the state of Connecticut. Mr. Lieberman, the current incumbent, has just conceded to Mr. Lamont and has, at the same time, announced that he will run in the general election as a third-party candidate. (I understand he mentioned running as an “independent” but he also mentioned the name of a new party he has established so the ‘independent’ label does not appear to apply.)
Therefore, may I expect that you will expeditiously act over the recess to acknowledge Mr. Lieberman’s party-switch, from nominal Democratic to third-party?
- Mr. Lieberman is currently the ranking Democratic member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. This title and its accompanying privileges and responsibilities should now be assigned to Mr. Carl Levin, Democrat from Michigan.
- Mr. Lieberman is also the ranking Democrat on the Airland Subcommittee of the Senate Armed Services Committee; Mr. Jack Reed, Democrat from Rhode Island should be appointed in his place.
Thank you for support of the voters of Connecticut and for the Democratic Party.

Here’s my note to Lieberman via the Lamont site:
For the good of the party, I beseech you to stop your ill-advised and ill-conceived independent run for the Senate.
Please, Mr. Lieberman, BE A MAN and do the right thing. Connecticut and the nation will be better off.
With all due respect

Failing that, I invoke the words of the great Charles Barkley:

A check from Hillary Clinton’s HILLPAC is being cut to Ned Lamont for five thousand dollars. She’s the first one to be counted on and make good on her promise to support the winner of the Connecticut primary.

Emailed Reid too, before the celebratory cocktails kicked in…
I’d forgotten what it felt like to win.
Another hundred to Ned tomorrow, btw. I don’t think JoMo’s gonna go dignified.
Dear Senator Reid:
I write tonight to ask you to immediately announce your support for the Democratic candidate for Senator of Connecticut, Ned Lamont. Democrats won a great victory tonight toward moving our country in a better direction.
Joe Lieberman has chosen to run as an independent instead of supporting the winner of the Democratic primary. This must not go unpunished. It is very important that you strip Joe Lieberman of any and all committee assignments at the soonest possible moment. You have not been able to count on Joe’s vote for a long time and now there is no need to tolerate him any longer.
Lead us to the majority. Start by following the lead of the great Democrats of Connecticut and DUMP JOE!
Respectfully,
Marcus L Salyer

So, what is Ned’s stand on the current war that Israel has declared on Lebanon? I hope that he supports ending US funding to Israel. Also, I hope that if he supports UN Resolution 1559, that he also supports the other 60 resolutions that were passed against Israel, including resolution 242, the right of Palestinians to return to their land which was stolen from them.

David Ehrenstein back at #28 mentioned David Brooks. I can hear him already saying, yes, Lamont won but it was a closer race than expected. That man has his talking points engraved in his soul. I just hope someone points out that it’s not the margin of victory that’s the story but that a three term Senator, ex-VP nominee, ex-Presidential candidate lost.
Dear Senator Lieberman,

Ummm…so, the good Democratic Senator (not yet emeritus) from CT does NOT accept a sound defeat in an ELECTION by VOTERS as meaning the VOTERS don’t want him (an election with record turnout, BTW, in AUGUST), but…but..an OPINION poll by some pollster of people who might or might not EVER vote—THAT would convince him he isn’t wanted?

My letter to my senator (BOXER)
As your constituent I demand that you immediately step up and endorse Ned Lamont and vow your willingness to help ensure that he is elected in November. Additionally, you must support Sen. Reid in stripping Lieberman of all committee chairmanships. Lieberman LOST and he will be gone. Please do not betray your constituency. Have the integrity to endorse the person whom the PEOPLE HAVE VOTED FOR. This is not a matter of “the party.” This is THE PEOPLE exercising their POWER.
Pay attention!!!
The same thing could happen to you or any other senator who refuses to acknowledge the will of the people they purport to represent. We will no longer stand for incompetents, mealy mouths, corporatists or apologists, let alone supporters of the current administration and its policies. No senator or congress person is safe from this storm.

Wrote to Reid. Will write to Pelosi. I’m in PA, so I’m fucked for Senators (for now), though I may just write Santorum and ask him to put his support behind Lieberman. That’d mess some things up.

God bless the New York Times. They come through again.
I stood at a polling place in Danbury, CT for four hours today, from 4:00 to 8:00. This was a middle to upper middle-class neighborhood – hardly rabble rousers. There is a lot of anger at Joe for his selfishness – past & present, for his capitulation to the Bush agenda, for his vow to run as an Independent, for his despicable behavior during this campaign.
This is a defining moment for the Dem party and I hope the party establishment responds accordingly.
The Courant’s site has a headline in the “Entertainment” box next to the “Lieberman Concedes” headline that says, “MUSIC: Poison with Cinderella at Dodge” Well, I think tonight, Cinderella (Ned) headlined Poison (Joey)! Come to think of it, Jumpin’ Joe looks like an older version of Bret Michels, and they both are washed up.
My god, it’s really happening. We “elitist insurgents” are taking down the…ummm…urrr….well, I guess the elites! Wonder what we’ll be called next week?

Benedict Arnold Lieberman –
Senator Lieberman, is that how you want to be remembered?
That’s what it will be, if you persue this fools errand of an Independent bid to save your Senate Seat.
Think about it . . . is it really worth it?
The issue that Joezoe gave Ned today was the blame for Joezoe’s $15/month web site not having enough servers. I know Joezoe, when push comes to shove, will blame it on his staff, but Ned can shove that one down Joezoe’s throat, politely of course, with the help of the CT Attorney General.
As others have mentioned, it goes to Joezoe’s rather spectacular incompetence.

pachacutec 9:48 pm — no offense to Amato, but I would really like to see more confirmation on that HILLPAC donation. Didn’t see anything at the links he furnished in his post that did so.
The amount of money that Lieberman pulled in over the last handful of days was staggering; I went through the list of names and the amounts, saw a trend that really disturbed me. The contributors are folks who give to folks on either side of the aisle, and also give to PAC’s that concern themselves with a particular country’s interests (not OURS). Not good.
There are going to be some weird tectonics for a while because of tonight’s outcome.

paul miller @ 309
Similar thoughts here, Paul. Especially with such a close race, it would have been so easy for Diebold or Chuck Hagel to pull some strings so to speak. Seems like there were other reasons for McKinney losing, but still hoping more of the “netroots” power will shift to this issue sooner than later. Otherwise, all this momentum (so nice to have this word back!) will just go to waste on future elections with mystery box voting.

Oh, Tweety…”Is this a big victory for bloggers?” he asks Joe Trippi. Tweety is definitely surfing the powershift here, I’ll give him that. He has been such a d*ckhead for the last 3 years to folks from the former Dean campaign, and now he’s courting Trippi.
Mike Barnicle called it for what it is, said Lieberman’s indie run is anti-Lamont, not running on anything else. Yeah, sure smells like that to me.
Tom Curry now talking with Tweety about Democratic donor support…will they write checks for Lieberman’s Round 2? Says it will be local people that are most divided. Boy-oh-boy, this is definitely a challenge. CTBob and CTBlogger et al still have their work cut out for them.
I’m pretty disgusted with NPR too (especially Morning Transcription and All Things Condensed), but MN public radio has some local shows and a music station that are too good not to support, so I maintain my membership but then write emails to the MPR griping about NPR’s lame news coverage and saying I wouldn’t miss it if they replaced it. I’m pretty sure they forward the messages.

“Joe called this old fashioned “partisan” politics in his speech tonight.”
That really pisses me off. I don’t know about Joe Lieberman, but that “old fashioned ‘partisan’ politics” is part of the social contract I value. Arrogant prick.
Reid has been emailed:
Since Joe Lieberman has lost the Democratic Primary and has announced his Independent run against the properly-elected Democratic candidate, he should no longer get the perks of a Democratic Senator.
You should strip him of his committee seats, top of business, Wednesday morning. Let him go to the Republicans if he wants a committee seat. There are plenty of loyal Democratic Senators that would be happy to fill the seats that Lieberman had.
Look. Many of you in the party were loyal to Lieberman, above and beyond the call of duty, and he promised not to do this, to stab the party in the back and run against the Democrat in the general election. With all that support, he STILL lost, and it’s his own darn fault.
Loyalty to the party and to the man that the people elected to represent them in the general election would require that you take a stand on this. You can’t pretend to be on Lieberman’s side or to be neutral in this. Lamont is the candidate of the Democratic Party. You have a fiduciary responsibility to all of us to make Lieberman pay a price for this.
punaise, there were two seismic events. The first was Ned’s victory. The second and maybe ultimately an even stronger shock was the massive “turnout” for an August primary.
Joezoe’s “Plan B,” was based on his fears,
yeah right Joeof low voter turnout. It’s the turnout imo that will get the attention of the WH and the GOP. They don’t want this kind of a massive turnout in November, so I think we could see Rumsfeld gone and date certain withdrawals. As if to punctuate my comment, I’m listening to the R candidate, Schlesinger, on Tweety and he’s calling for a “speedy” withdrawal, “at least 50% in the next twelve months.” That’s the Republican candidate in CT.
Just a thought for tomorrow and next week. We should set up a way to keep track of who is contributing to Joe’s Independent-Selfish run from now on. If a lot of republilcans are funneling him dough, it needs to be public knowledge.

awrrrright…get off the tits you guys…scchhheeeesh….find an antique urn or something!

No, people like me. But since I don’t live in Georgia, it’s a moot point, isn’t it?
I’ve just finished reading all the comments and I’m in tears. It’s been years since I let myself hope that things were going to change. As this election got closer I kept telling myself to hold back my feelings and not commit them to yet another crushing blow. But I couldn’t help myself. Thank each and every one of you for your enthusiasm and dedication to this cause. Hope springs a turtle in my heart again.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
I did not know that Bionic.
Gee, and it was so much fun celebrating Ned!
Goodnight all.
Man, I’ve been waiting soooo long for an election night like this. Somebody pinch me OW! Not there!
Outside of Ned winning the Fall, which races on the Act Blue list are in most need of some netroots support? I’ll be checking in on Howie’s reports as much as possible since he’ll probably be outlining this in days to come. We got ourselves our own Wurlitzer now…crank that fire-puppy up!

I absolutely agree. It smacks of incompetence that Joe’s campaign didn’t do a better job of due diligence in interviewing, selecting, hiring, and negotiating a contract for Web development services.
I found it stupifying that the Lieberman campaign seemed clueless about tech support options. At a minimum, their contract for web services should have included tech support backup, phone numbers, webserver stats, and other details.
A US Senator, with a $12m re-election warchest, placed his hopes on a $15/mo server space. And he is allowed to vote on the Telecomm Bill?!! Mamma mia.
Mike Allen from time.com is on Hardball and is an absolute asshole. He’s pushing GOP talking points HARD, including saying that “many Democrats” have told him Lamont’s win is bad. Bull! He was also pushing spin from Lieberman’s campaign HARD. Keep an eye out for this idiot.
I’m disappointed in all this web site crap. We don’t know how much Lieberman spent on the site. It’s not $15 per month. We don’t know why the website went down. Let the FBI deal with it and leave Lamont out of it. Talking about it is just tying Lamont to a story that has nothing to do with him.
Okay someone requested we get off our tits conversation and look at an ancient urn.
Well, here is an urn that was on exhibition at the British Museum when I was there at the end of June. (Warning: explicit imagery)
It’s called the Warren Cup. It’s famous because it depicts homosexual (and you have to say that like a British academic) acts between men. If you want to see it better just google image “Warren Cup”.
So no tits.

I am so with ya on the sentiment. It really just feels like the beginning, doesn’t it? That’s what’s extra cool about it all. The pendulum is swinging back to the side of compassion and goodness. It’s got a long way to go yet, but let’s hope we can keep it from ever swinging back to where it has been recently. Thank you too for being here!
edgery at 260: Good letter.
John Casper @ 378
John Casper, I don’t remember where I read this, maybe Steve Gilliard, but it seems likely that Joe is expecting a walk-out of loyal dems…and this is spin to save his sorry face.

Good Point. How bout this weather we’re having? I don’t know about you, but I’m beginning to sprout gills.
It was the “kiss of death, after all. Thank you Shrub.
Woohoo! 2006-Democratic-nominee-for-Senator Lamont!
You guys are the bestest!
Here’s a place to tell Leader Reid you’d like him to endorse Ned Lamont for the Senate and support the will of Connecticut Democrats.
http://www.giveemhellharry.com…..omment-BtJ
I just wrote Senator Reid and asked him to support the people’s Democratic nominee for the Senate in Connecticut. For the subject line on Senator Reid’s e-mail, I chose “Ethics” because that seemed like the fundamental issue. It would be unethical of Reid to support anyone but Ned.
sanmateo
I latched onto ‘Ethics” too, ’cause scumbaggery was missing.
From the BA?
Wow – it’s a long road to the end of this thread. Whatta night – Thanks Jane, Christie, TRex and everybody else – there’s work ahead but this victory was real. It’s a honor to be a witness to the history you’re all making.

Don’t tell me Rahm is trying to lead the second line.
Congrats to Ned, FDL, et al. I’ve got some thoughts, predictions and doling out some credit at:
Nettertainment: Change!
The little engine that could. Bravo Ned.
My e-mail to Harry Reid was, as follows:
“Sen. Reid, I write this morning not as a personal constituent of yours, rather to you in your role as a leader in the party I’ve voted consistently for my entire adult life.
Now that Sen. Joseph Lieberman has elected to ignore the clearly stated will of the Democratic voters in Connecticut and launch an ‘independent’ bid to retain his Senate seat, I humbly suggest that he be stripped of all of his committe assignments, immediately.
He’s made it quite clear that he has no real respect for our party and it’s voters in his home state. By my lights the party, you and I and everyone in it, owe him absolutely nothing.
Thanks for your attention and indulgence.”
And I signed my real name.
Here’s what I sent Reid:
Dear Mr. Reid,
I am a lifelong Democrat and I am writing you in your role as a party leader. Please note that Senator Lieberman has been beaten in his Democratic Primary. He has vowed now to run as an Independent. I am writing to ask you to support the Democratic nominee and refuse to allow Mr. Lieberman to exploit the connections and whatever tawdry spoils his position as a long time Senator has afforded him to this point.
His decision to run independently is, on its face, a vain and ultimately destructive mistake. It will hurt not only him and his legacy, it will hurt our beloved party and undermine our efforts to reclaim this country from a Republican party gone mad with power. This is a critical moment for us and your position and influence could be wielded in the interests of our party. I ask you to use your power. Save our party.
FDL (Jane) can properly claim credit for being the first national blog to take up Ned’s cause. Much more so than Kos.
report in from the heartland
the morning delivery of RAW STORY on my doorstep confirms it — it’s a split decision nationally:
one victory for the new dem wing / FDL (Lamont win)
one victory for Shrum / Caddell / Lieberman / Preznit wing (McKInney loss)
for real progressive / anti war issues nationally…………..
net loss
Jeffords is still ranking member on the Environment & Public Works Committee (at least the website says so). But he’s been a much more reliable Democratic vote that Holy Joe.
But I’m all for getting him out of there. That “post-nasal drip voice” (bwahaha! Good one, Tweety!) has gotten on my nerves over the past 6 years.

I’m a 73-year-old who is a little confused coming into this arena just recently. If Joe L. is planning on running as an independent, don’t independents have primarys? Isn’t there anyone else in CT planning on running as an independent or can there be more than one candidate for the independent party? At my age, I should know these things, but I don’t and I’d like to know.
I applaud the great achievement in uprooting Joe Lieberman, and I support your views in every political way. It is, however, discouraging that I can’t enjoy your analysis because of the filthy manner in which firedoglake expresses itself. The F— word? Dickweed? C’mon. Get out a dictionary. Get some standards. Still, I applaud you and am absolutely thrilled with what you have helped get done.
Here’s the email I sent- I’m still shaking I’m so disgusted…
Dear Senator Reid,
I feel compelled to write because I am so outraged that Mr Lieberman has decided to ignore his constituents in his own state who voted for another representative last night and is now going to denounce his own party and run as an independent. I do hope that as the Democratic leader, you will let him and the American public know that this is not something that will be encouraged, financed or supported. This totally selfish, self centered and destructive stubborness to by-pass the democratic process when it doesn’t suit him is disgusting. Anyone who supports this behavior by the now traitorous Lieberman will find him or herself the target of the people powered movement. His actions hurt the Dems, period. He has now demonstrated, without any doubt, his loyalties and they are not to the Democrats in his state or the Democrats nationally who are desperate for accountability in DC and someone who speaks FOR them, not AT them. I hope you will be swift in denouncing his self-serving plans.
Oh, God, I just read the rest of it – something about an old uncle soiling himself. Can’t read any further. Thanks anyway for your tremendous impact as this astounding Connecticut race took root.
My letter to Sen. Reid:
Dear Senator Reid:
My family members are lifelong Democrats (including grandparents who gag on the word Republican!) and active in the progressive movement attempting to counter the Radical Right’s attack on our democratic traditions.
Last night, Ned Lamont won the Democratic primary for the 2006 Senator race in Conneticutt. Our family contributed to Mr. Lamont’s campaign, worked GOTV on our computers, and we are contributing to other progressive Democrats across the nation in the same way.
As you know, Lamont’s opponent, incumbent Senator Joseph Lieberman, announced in his concession speech last night that he would leave the Democratic Party and mount a campaign as an independent.
I wish to express to you, the Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, our disappointment in Senator Lieberman’s decision. We were hoping he would put the good of his party and the nation above his personal quest to hold onto power.
Since he has chosen to abandon the party that has supported him for 18 years, we feel that you and the Democratic Senate leadership have no option but to remove Lieberman from any and all appointments he holds in the current Senate. He is no longer a member of our party and should not be allowed to serve in positions designated for Democratic senators.
Senator Lieberman is a fine American who has served admirably the people of Conneticutt and our nation. But he lost the primary election last night. And instead of abiding by the (small “d”) democratic rules he was sworn to upload, he has abandoned them and our party.
Please replace him immediately with a loyal Democrat (big “D”).
Very respectfully,
David Taylor and family
Yvonne at 6:20 am –
Welcome to FireDogLake!!!
Joe Lieberman intends to petition his way onto the ballot as an Independent — so, no primary for him going that route.
However — he has to turn in 7,500 valid signatures by 4 PM today. If he turns in 15,000, but only 7,499 are valid, he is toast. Plus, the signatures have to be turned in to the local election offices where they were collected — no small feat in itself.
It may be that the sad saga of self important Joe Lieberman will end today — but it will probably be a while before we know.
My letter to Harry Reid..
I watched you on my laptop via feed when you spoke at Yearly Kos. I discuss you with my conservative son, who still can’t believe that I, a progressive liberal Dem, like, support, and respect you as a Democratic leader of the Senate.
Last night, I and many other Democrats around the country waited and watched for the outcome of the primary in Connecticut for Senate. Yes, I have donated to the Lamont campaign. Please understand Harry, that until I found Daily Kos three years ago, I had NEVER in my 63 years donated to any political campaign. Even though I was a good Democrat, and a self avowed political junkie, I was never active. I guess I am now considered to be one of those dangerous maniacs from the left, though I expect my grandkids would find that a little hard to believe.
I watched Mr. Liberman’s speech on C-span last night and was very disappointed in the man that I supported for VP just six years earlier. It seemed to be all about him… he could not let “this” stand. Huh? The clear will of the Democratic voters of his state cannot be allowed to stand? The ego and arrogance in his speech was palpable. Where before I felt sorry for him, because he stood still while the world around him changed in six years, now I was angry.
Now I ask, politely, for you to please live up to the image I have of you as an honest political leader of the Democratic Party who I can respect. The leadership of the Democratic Party must show that they support the will of the voters. You, like it or not, are part of that leadership. Therefore, you need to actively support Mr. Lamont, and that includes making all efforts to get Mr. Liberman to drop out of this race. I’m sure the Republicans are delighted to see him run as an independent, as it will take money and energy away from other important races in November.
Thank you.
Here’s my letter to Sen Reid:
Dear Senator Reid:
Now that Senator Lieberman has displayed his true colors and chosen to serve his personal ambition, now that he has given the middle finger to the Democratic Party because it has spoken in Connecticut and he didn’t like what it had to say, now that he has declared himself an Independent candidate for the Senate, you must immediately strip him of all Democratic Party committee assignments and perquisites. Yank his parking space privileges while you’re at it! And pass the word along to the other Quislings in the Democratic Party (they, and you, know who they are): this is only the beginning.
Thank you.
Signed,
One happy Democrat (that’s with a big “D”)
