A little information from the World Wide Web consortium:
10.5.4 503 Service Unavailable The server is currently unable to handle the request due to a temporary overloading or maintenance of the server. The implication is that this is a temporary condition which will be alleviated after some delay. If known, the length of the delay MAY be indicated in a Retry-After header. If no Retry-After is given, the client SHOULD handle the response as it would for a 500 response.
That is also referred to as a 503 error in web/tech-guru talk. What this error tells you is that there are so many people trying to view the site at that time that it can not keep up. The server then sends out this error as a way of troubleshooting.
So why this sudden class in web servers? Well, as most of you may have guessed, this is a follow up to my earlier post about Lieberman and his "hacked site" claim. During Lieberman's concession speech he mentioned his site, joe2006.com, and said to visit it once it becomes "unhacked". Well I decided to jump on and see what was happening with his site. Guess what happened. I got the infamous 503 error page on his site. I checked the IP and it was coming from his new GoDaddy hosting account. I hit refresh a couple of times and this is what came up:
Joe is still claiming his hack on his new server.
The other thing to keep in mind is this. Joe has just changed hosting companies. You FDL regulars will certainly know how that goes and what we went through here when that happened. You get up to 48 hours where people can not access your site because when they enter your domain name (ie. joe2006.com), the servers that look that name up and change it into the computer talk of an IP address cache the information and many don't update for up to 48 hours. This is called DNS propagation. (for those that want to learn more about DNS and propagation, check out this entry on Wikipedia .) We even had a few readers here that it took a couple of weeks for their DNS to catch up. Before that they were still getting sent to the old host.
So why bring that bit of history up? Well, Lieberman's DNS records were just updated today. That means there are still plenty of people out there not even going to his new server at GoDaddy. That also means that he is getting overloaded with only a percentage of the actual traffic he can expect once everyone is fully propagated.
Now we get to sit and wonder if this will be the same story from now until November, or will Joe swallow his pride and say "oops I got screwed by being cheap". Nah - we will probably get a repeat of this ordeal again in the next three months.

ned-rootz!
I understand that those of us here on the net are interested in this web page hack story, but I think our side should stop talking about it and move on. The people out there on the street care about our kids dying in Iraq, high gas prices and high health care prices. We should focus on that.
The left needs to swiftly sink Lieberman’s “they hacked me” swiftboat. To quote TRex for the third time today - ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK. Don’t let the lie lie. Thanks, Jamie, for your clear “503s for Dummies.”
Jamie, you rock
I could not believe it when RGJoe invited Americans to come visit his website “when it’s unhacked.” The man has no, no, no, no shame.
Jane,
please, please, please say nice things about the Lieberman voters and campaigners. This was about the war, not a war among Democrats.
Yes, I know it’s nice to win. But reach out.
Chris
ps, your writing is awesome but you know that already.
pps, your Harry Reid idea was spot on. Read it. Did it.
Ned!
And, holy crap, you just uncovered a clue here… the TTL (Time To Live) for the A record for joe2006.com in the DNS is set to 3600 seconds, or one hour. This is the sort of TTL one might set in anticipation of a move (though I would use still lower, personally) — the default TTL typically is 86,400 seconds.
I think they knew they were going to move today. This looks coordinated now.
There’s still no explanation why the Planet’s security response team was never called in. The whole thing stinks to high heaven.
Please go tell Harry Reid what you want him to do about RGJoe at http://www.giveemhellharry.com.....anfran/BhW
Jamie, there’s more color wrt their net arrangements here:
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001304.php
I don’t know if that changes anything, just thought I’d re-post in case you’d missed it earlier.
get all the info together. give it to someone (Jane?) who has some access to the MSM. demand that they run the truth.
tweety is tired. (msnbc on in background)
Somebody from Lamont’s competent techs needs to write up a succinct explanation of bandwidth/cpu use on servers and why the WATBs host was insufficient, causing his server trouble. Quick and efficient counter to the “I’ve been hacked!” idiocy.
I disagree. We have to push back. The ‘hack’ story isn’t the focus, but the reply needs to be a strong ‘Joe’s site failed because of Joe and no one else, which is an example of why he should not be elected’.. moving on, then talk about whatever… but each issue has to be forceably countered. That is why the GOP control the message and Dems seem ineffectual.
… and TRex, what are you focusing on this evening?
Jamie!
Joe is a wee tiny of a man.
Rob Zuber @ 3
No, we’re interested in the story because Lieberman is using it to smear Ned and quite possibly try to have the results of the primary invalidated. The story has to be investigated and refuted for those reasons before we can “move on.”
This is one of those instances where tomorrow will really tell us more than we know today.
Where I am (west coast), I don’t get to the new site, I still get to the old message: “This account is under construction. Please check back soon. It will be available shortly. Thank you.”
Hey, Jamie –
Thanks for all you do — you Rock!!!
Two functionality issues with FDL . . .
The edit function doesn’t work with IE6 –
The space bar functions as ‘refresh comments’ in Firefox, instead of page advance . . .
Thanks Again!!!
al-scooter at 9
very interesting…they’re trying to toss it joe’s way…but the truth will come out. And regardless, it will be ‘old news’ I predict by the time November rolls around.
Thanks so much Jamie and also to Kos for “getting it right” on the hacking lie. Unfortunately this type of story has a way of fossilizing into the MSM machine. It would not surprise me that 12 months from now Media Matters will be correcting Fox News pundits who will cling to the hacking lies.
Jamie, that pic is hilarious! Thanks for all the amazing work you do to keep the Lake running, and for these posts.
Intersting stuff popping up already at DKos:
http://www.dailykos.com/
Dodd’s in charge of cooling Joe’s jets, Rahm refers to Joe as “Bush’s love child”, HILLPAC just cut a $5K check to Ned’s campaign…yikes!
MommyBrain!! (thank you for your kindness)
The space bar functions as ‘refresh comments’ in Firefox, instead of page advance . . .
Sometimes it works, but I think if the focus is on the Refresh Comments button, the spacebar is the same as a button press (this is a Windows or Firefox thing, and I think an IE thing as well, not a WordPress thing).

speak english man! don’t make me get out the arguements for ‘english only’ that lotus posted some days ago…
Is the spazeboy still functioning?
New Haven Notes from the Lieberman party: “[T]he secretary of state’s website, which is supposed to be doing live reporting of the precinct tallies, has also been overwhelmed with traffic and has been down most of the night. Was that hacked too? Or maybe the state has the same $15 month hosting plan that Lieberman has.”
That poor little kitty looks just like Joe….
When he found out he lost.
Is the spazeboy still functioning?
Yes, he’s quite refreshing, and not at all of a downer.
Re: “moving on.” That’s what Kerry did after he saw the swiftboat ads. Not a winning strategy.
One of the things the Clinton campaign had in ‘92 was a rapid-response policy. 30 minutes, if I’m not mistaken, to respond to any charges.
Watch Joe continue to wail “they cheated…” if he’s allowed to.
John B. @ 27
Ned’s campaign didn’t want anyone to know how narrow their victory over Joe really was!
This was the wittiest sign the right ever came up with:
Time for bed. Sleep well, all you Firepuppies.
The SF Giants aren’t doing too well this year, but they are blessed with a crew of great radio/TV announcers. One of them, a former pitcher named Mike Krukow, likes to trot out an established put-down when a batter strikes out miserably or otherwise fails to achieve something:
“Grab some pine, meat!”
(it means “go sit on the bench, you lunkhead; you’re out.”)
Grab some pine, Joe.

In the meantime, Fuckin’ A Bubba - GO NED! Go Roots! Take back our country!
TTL’s of an hour when moving a site, are still far too long IMO.
I set them to 60 when I’m doing work that I might have to back out of…
And sheesh, if you’ve got millions of dollars to spend, why the HECK aren’t they using something like UltraDNS (or Custom DNS) rather than CRAP dns hosting at the ISP/Hosting co. (They are almost always on the same subnet, in the same physical location etc. Any disaster that takes down one is almost certain to take down the other.)
Further, the domain contact record had the billing and admin contacts both as @yahoo accounts. Ah, yeah, my critical clients, I always put crap mail accounts as the contact addresses. /snark!
Further, they give the ISP/Host tech folks admin rights on the domain records, by virtue of being the technical contact. (Another big stupid mistake, IMO. Never let the ISP/Host hold your marbles - they might never screw up or whack you, but why live dangerously - hold them yourself!)
There are so many dumb mistakes the Liberman crew made, that I’d assume the Liberman *losers* ARE the source of the problem long before believing any bogus “hacked” sob story.
But hey, perhaps George Bush could use this excuse. “Ah, yeah, I had plans for Iraq, but my server got hacked and I didn’t have backup, and I had a totally burned on acid technical crew and, well, it’s not my fault. I’m just the decider!”
IMO, Larry Moe and Curley could be working for Liberman and look pretty darn good, compared to the folks there now.

I have to chuckle that the prude Joe Lieberman and his censorship tendencies would use godaddy as his host. Does anyone remember their superbowl ad?

MommyBrain…I feel like I know you. My ‘big’ intro to fdl came courtesy of the live stream of YKOS. I saw you introduced and interviewed. I liked you right away. And then i got to hear your ‘voice’ and your passion.
Thanks for being you.
The Harry Reid link was a good idea.
I think it would also be a good idea if Jane, or whoever is in a position to do so, would post a link to Sen. Schumer and the DSCC. He needs to hear from netroots Democrats about the need to get behind Lamont at all levels and in all sectors of the Democratic Party.
We should demand that not one red cent of DSCC money go to the turncoat traitor Bush mole Loserman, and further, that the DSCC as well as the Senate Democratic Party and the DNC take a cue from Senator Clinton and act swiftly and decisively to endorse, finance, and actively support the Democratic nominee Ned Lamont in every way possible.
I have, in the past, contributed to the DSCC, because electing more Democrats to the Senate seemed like a noble cause. I would be outraged if any DSCC money, solicited from Democrats to support Democrats, went to Lieberslease after he bolts the Democratic party.
Anybody have a Schumer or DSCC linky?

Ever been Slashdot’d? It has taken out CNN (not recently — plan for the spikes if you have the money), a huge high-capacity website. Blogs are pushing millions of users simultaneously to one place at the same point in time. Most websites (including the secretary of state’s office, AnyState, USA) are not built to handle that.
It’s not a denial of service. It’s insufficient capacity to handle spikes in traffic.
Can I just mention how proud I am of that rascal Mike Stark?

What stevetalbert 10:25 pm said — today’s hack-tacular story exemplified Lieberman’s poor fit for a seat as Senator in contemporary Congress. He’s on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, for cripe’s sake, yet he had NOONE working security on his website and email?
He’s got nobody technical actual on his immediate staff, but he’s blaming techies either in the Lamont campaign or bloggers for being hacked?
Duh. Thank goodness it was only Joe-nertia’s own servers that were attacked and not our country…
CT-Rex!
And another thing…
It doesn’t have to be tonight, but I hope that maybe by tomorrow we could have a means of contacting Bill Clinton posted prominently in an FDL front page. He also needs to hear from us, and to get the message that Democrats support Lamont, and losers cut and run (to paraphrase Mean Jean).
A week or two ago someone posted a link to the Clinton Foundation. I don’t know whether that is the best way to reach him or not, but he does need to hear from us.
All is forgiven, Bill, for supporting Loserman, he WAS a Democratic senator and all, but the time has come to get right with the Democratic Party and support our nominee. Yeah Bubba. Just ask Hillary. Go to Connecticut and work your magic for Ned. I did not have sex with that senator, Senator Lieberman.

Greg @ 42
I agree. However, I wonder if their DNS provider, secureserver.net, permits TTLs that low. Requiring relatively high TTLs would prevent load storms associated with very low ones.
Or it could be — imagine this — that their tech people just aren’t skilled enough to manipulate TTLs beyond what they read in some manual somewhere.
Regardless, I do not consider a TTL of 3600 to be normal. And if the TTL were the normal 86400 before all this went down, we likely wouldn’t see the change yet from our recursive resolvers.
Thanks for setting it straight. I had to flush the cache from a computer at work for my boss, as well as at home just to read FiredogLake.
Just to let you know, there are folks in my office who read this, but never comment. I think they are called Lurkers. So Joe was real stupid, no suprise. I was reading how Joe had hired this Hot Shot Texas Hosting firm. Gee, would he have gotten that recommendation from Karl? In any event, the article:
TPM Muckraker
How do you ‘unhack’. a website? He’s such a folksie fellow that Lieberloser. I love the Giants, Willie Mays at Candlestick, 50 years ago. It still my birthday, and the last great news was Nixons resignation 8/8/74. You firedogs are true political animals and don’t back off now.

Phew, Tweety’s done tweeting. Finally.
He was completely jacked up, think he was mainlining Ned-renaline.
Heh. About f*cking time.
Big day here, need to tuck in, too. Congressional District south of here did the right thing and got rid of Schwarz, who’d gotten money from DeLay-Abramoff. Unfortunately they selected somebody farther to the right…don’t know yet how they’re going to handle that one.
Lots of work ahead to do, FirePups. 91 days and counting to make this really stick. Catch you in the morning!
One way to contact Clinton might be through his Foundation.
Just one place to start…
So, uh, is this where the party is?
Hey folks!
I think what we witnessed in the Lamont primary campaign was the beginning of how 2006 and 2008 will play out on the web. Tie-ins between bloggers and system failures will be played up by the old school as they struggle to maintain their relavance. Old school pols will be climbing over each other trying to figure out what to do next over the next 48 hours, or maybe all the way to Friday….
This has been one hard fought victory. Plain and simple. Now the hard part begins.
Thanks, everybody here and in that sliver of a state on the other side of this great, wonderful, flawed country!
Just got back from the victory celebration at the hotel. I live in NY state, and had the most blissful cruise home through the small towns and countryside of northwest Connecticut under a full moon. I was sort of levitating, and the car somehow found its way to my house.
Hung out a bit in the blogger’s corral as the election results came in, got to say Howdy to Jane Hamsher, Chris Bowers, Matt Stoller, Atrios, and Bob Geiger. They were merryily typing away and seemed to be enjoying themselves thoroughly.
What happened for me this evening was that I sort of turned the corner from just being anti-Lieberman to actually feeling strongly about Ned Lamont as a leader. His victory speech was clear, classy, and got me thinking that he might be Presidential material someday. The Democratic party has got itself a new star.
Hey SteveAudio

Mrs. Clinton will contact Mr. Clinton. Hillary needs Ned, or at least needs to support him and marginalize Loserman.

Except that Lamont has nothing to do with it. Let the FBI deal with it. Responding to it ties the Lamont campaign to the issue. We don’t have access to the server logs so we can’t refute it.
We’ve got dozens of people on our side saying that Lieberman paid only $15 a month and that the site wasn’t hacked. Neither of those are facts. We don’t know what they paid and we don’t know what happened. Let the authorities work it out while we talk about actual issues that matter.

I wouldn’t recommend using the event form at the Clinton Foundation. It’s probably routed directly to someone like a scheduling secretary, and she (or he) is probably busy enough.
The general contact form is better in this case; whoever has access to that expects to get nearly anything via email and will know best how to direct it to the proper party or parties.

Tweety talked to and about everybody except Ned. They trotted out the dismissive ‘angry’ won’t win.
I think what has bothered me most is the pundits talking about the Democratic voters of this country in the same terms they use to describe the people killing our soldiers in Iraq. I think they should be called on this every single time. It is a vile technique they use to mold public opinion and ought not to be in their job description.
My fingers are almost gone from live blogging all day for CT Bob, but what a day! You were all there with us, believe me. I’m going to bed — when I left the hotel, Bob was going to the hospitality suite to party.
I was so happy to find Jane to say goodbye — FDL was such a catalyst. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get FDLers in the same place at the same time for a group photo — we are all hoping to have a date same time same place, same result on Nov 7.
G’night.

“I am a lifelong Democrat. I have contributed to DSCC because I think electing more Democratic senators is a worthy goal. The Democrats must take back the Senate and restore democracy and the balance of powers to our government.
I am writing tonight because Ned Lamont has won the Connecticut Democratic Primary. Sen. Joe Lieberman, formerly a Democrat, has bolted the Democratic Party and is running AGAINST the Democratic nominee. He seeks to stymie the will of the Democrats of Connecticut. He threatens to be a spoiler who gets the Republican candidate elected. That would be the loss of a Senate seat that we CANNOT afford to lose.
Sen. Schumer, on behalf of the DSCC, should announce on Wednesday, August 10, that he and the DSCC stand firmly behind the Party’s nominee for the U.S. Senate from the State of Connecticut, Ned Lamont. He should announce that they are going to be funding Lamont’s campaign at a substantial level and actively encouraging other Democratic senators to support him. Most of all, he should make it crystal clear that they do NOT support Sen. Joe Lieberman (CfL-CT). By announcing his independent campaign AGAINST THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, he has forfeited any right he might have had for their support.
Stand tall for the Democratic Party. Stand tall for Ned Lamont. Show Joe Lieberman to the exit door. Thank you.

True, and it’s also worth noting from this story that Lieberman’s new host, GoDaddy, is a notoriously cheap-ass, $5/month shared-server type outfit. More evidence that Lieberman’s web idiocy was his own doing and that his accusations are scurilous and pathetic.
I always feel a little out of sync on the west coast. If I stay up too late, I read comments about the beautiful sunrise.
Henny-penny, the sky is falling.

Damn! The cork in my incredibly generic Bordeaux just broke!

Sounds to me like Joe went with the cheapest service possible because he didn’t want to have any more contact with those peons known as “constituents” than absolutely necessary. Give people a functional website, they’ll send you email demanding all kinds of ridiculous favors, just because technically Joe might be “serving” as their senator. Joe needs to focus his attention & save all his energy for meeting the demands of his corporate overlords, and the CEOs of Big Pharma and the insurance industry don’t need no stinkin’ website access — Joe’s private cell number is on their speed dial already.
I haven’t seen the Wonkette piece mentioned:
“Hello, this is Kerry Szeps, owner of 2Dog Media, LLC. … 2Dog Media, LLC has not hosted the joe2006.com website for over 3 months. When the site was hosted with us, it was on a dedicated server with unlimited bandwidth and daily server back-ups. The Lieberman Campaign was paying much more
