(You can follow results of the race here at WTNH)
8:28 pm — With 4% of precincts reporting, it’s 60/40 Lamont. Chris Bowers is standing in front of the TV cheering. Should give you some idea of the sentiment in the room.
8:42 pm — 7% of precincts reporting. It’s 56% Lamont/44% Lieberman. Tom Schaller reports that Lieberman lost his home precinct in New Haven.
8:48 pm — TRex and Tom Tomorrow bonding over the Penguin. Atrios drinking wine, Bowers with beer. CT Blogger festooned with Kiss buttons. All the reporters want to talk to CTBob.
9:14 pm — 25% reporting — 55% Ned and 45% Joe.
9:42 pm — 80% reporting — 53% Ned and 47 % Joe. And a bit of an odd news item: CTLocalPolitics blog reports that there was a moment of joy at Lieberman HQ when the wrong numbers were flashed up with the wrong names. Ooops.
10:48 pm — Unofficial word from Jane — the race has gone to Lamont. Lots of questions as to what Lieberman is going to do next. No call from him as yet. I asked Jane whether the speculation was that he would concede the Democratic primary and then say "see you in the General Election" or what — and there is no solid concensus on that as yet from anyone, bloggers and reporters alike. Will update this when we can. — CHS

Oh please, oh please! I suppose those early returns are absentee ballots? Anyone know where they are from? The link gives no further information.
NED!!!!!

Feelin’ the love!
Couldn’t get into Lamont’s site. And this one is running slow.
Just want you to know Jane, how much I admire all you have done. You’re brilliant!
Go Ned!
Happy Day!
I’ve been asked by a few people w/ clipboards on sidewalks lately if I’ll sign something or whatever to help elect a Democrat.
“Like Lieberman?” … I”m too mean to these paid volunteers

Bloggers yelling and cheering in room… They must of just seen the exit polls…
Am I seeing some daylight after a six year storm?

Looking good so far !!!
I hope Ned Lamont got some Memorial Donations on behalf of my father, Ronald W, Navy veteran out of New London, CT from 1957-1961. Dad died on the 4th of July this year at age 66. Dad (and I) really disliked the opportunistic Joe Lieberman. Go Ned and represent real democrats and the People Of Connecticut!
This spread is why Lieberman shut down his own website—now he can claim that the reason Lamont won by so much (and I know it’s early) is b/c Lieberman voters couldn’t get info, couldn’t find polling places, had their votes blocked. So it was a set-up to be able to run as an Independent even if Lamont wins by a big margin. Plan C: whine that the vote was compromised, a thing he refused to do for Gore in 2000. Has anyone ever looked into the possibility that Lieberman is an actual mole?
‘Senator Lamont’. Sunrise in America.
Take a deep breath, Jane et. al. You deserve to savor the night ahead.
It smells like…victory!
I can’t even watch my Reds take on the Cardinals in the biggest eries of the year for fear of missing the latest nugget about the race in the primary.
We who follow this here blog know damn well that tonight happened at least to some degree beause of some very good people who come here to comment and go out to work their tails off. Again, thanks and congratulations!
WYNC NY’s public radio is running live coverage http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/s…..CTION=HOME
Congratulations to the people of Connecticut. This is democracy in action.
Also discernment.
I wonder if someone has hacked every website having to do with the Lieberman/Lamont election.
All of these internets are running really, really slowly.
For a while I couldn’t get into these comments.
Panic!
Lotus, I have no idea what a conch fritter is, but I’m dying to have one!
If Joe lost his homies, all bets are off!
Lost his own precinct? Oh. Snap.
Damn…
Diabolical, Ned! covering your tracks in the one-man (a la Vladimir Putin) take down of Leiberman’s website by cleverly taking down DailyKos at the height of liberal blogosphere feeding frenzy? Too many hits you say? Everyone in the world flooding these sites to find out what’s going on?
Posh.
It was superty duper Devil’s henchman Ned Lamont who did it all!
11% reporting, 56-44 Lamont! Updated 8:49 Eastern.
Every single person who worked hard for Ned Lamont should take particular pride in the fact that hardly a single CT website is functioning well tonight.
They are, each one, overwhelmed with traffic…and it isn’t merely from CT.
The world is watching, hanging on the results as precinct totals dribble in. It has been a long time since America had a political tale this optimistic, a democratic parable this enlightening, or a politician this inspiring.
It seems there’s life in old Liberty yet.
Win or lose, you have changed the rules. Congratulations.
I worked the 9th in Stamford from 10:30-4:00. My sense is that 60% were for Ned. No Lieberman people in sight. This were inner city, lots of elder folks, caribbeans and blacks. Many were thrilled to be voting Joe off the island.
The Ned people worked very hard and did a yeoman’s job of getting this man elected. Tip your hats!
I got a sunburn.

Jane,
Thank you and Christie and all the FDL community for all you have done to make this night possible.
Because: a. I love beating a dead horse; and, b. well, I’m a firepup at heart…
My ***legal*** research has shown that there is no logical reason that joe2006.com should be down. Let me re-iterate: LEGAL. I so…have the urge…to hack…be good be good…
Anyway, as far as I can tell, somebody has simply shut down joe2006.com. I don’t mean viciously, either, as I believe the powers that be simply decided to shut the site down. meetned.com? Up and apparently going through the same routers. If they were being DoS’ed, meetned.com would not be up. SQL injection? wouldn’t take that many sites down (in theory, though it’s technically possible). Either joe or the host shut joe2006.com down. If 2dog.com ain’t lying, it was joe. I am more and more convinced that the reason joe2006.com is down is self-infliction.
BTW, I will happily volunteer my services to help joe’s campaign track down and prosecute those responsible for this attack. Please feel free to contact me by asking in this thread, and I will respond. We’ll bust Ned’s campaign if it’s the last thing I ever do *snicker*.

Here’s a real hero, “Missy’s Brother”, in the CT trenches, working his heart out. Read how he forced a recount in one precinct!
“I am sunburned, dehydrated, starved and VERY HAPPY. The poll I worked out I protested the final tally. They had it all wrong with ONLY one person reading the numbers. I wouldn’t shut up and they opened it again and reread the results. Lieberman 184, Lamont 244.
Nader on the radio right now excited about the results so far. Lamont 56 and Lieberman 41
Missy’s brother | 08.08.06 – 8:56 pm | #
They had Lieberman 244 and Lamont 226. The person that read the numbers had to have been 80. They locked the machines and I quickly figured out that over double the number of voters voted in the LT. Gov. race than for US Senator. I start yelling that I was filing charges. I made a scene. They reopened them and reread the results with a different total in every race. I am glad that I did! I have reported it to Lamont’s HQ.
I am worn out. I live to far from the chi-chi Lamont parties so I will party here with y’all. I feel so VERY happy. I think we have pulled it out and I did my part!

I sold souvenirs in the early seventies and then used to work in the front office, ran the scoreboard and did the on-field announcing in the Bench/Morgan/Seaver/Concepcion. I share season tickets for four and if you and family ever get to Cincy, they’re yours. (I even have a cute three year old boy peanut who would LOVE to hook up with yours.) My tickets are five rows up in the upper deck right behind home plate.
It would be my honor and a very small token of appreciation for the role you and this blog have played in my life and the life of my beloved country on this momentous night.

Jane:
Your interview on WNYC was a perfect example of why you, and the other roots bloggers are needed.
Brian Lehrer got almost everything wrong. He didn’t know your name, didn’t know where either you or Joan were calling from, and got all the details of graphicsgate wrong.
Their reporter, when asked what Ned’s campaign had to say about the ‘hacking’ hulabaloo, resonded by saying, “They’ve said nothing,” despite Ned’s hosting of the Google cache site and his offer to help.
They fumbled the question of whether DeStefano had supported Lieberman or Lamont.
All together, they bloviated about the race – and about its implications – while knowing nothing about it that could be encapsulated in a shoddy, one-paragraph pre-show briefing note.
Utterly shameful performance on their part. I could hear you gritting your teeth, and commend you for holding your tongue and letting your silence speak volumes.
You deserve credit for your dedication, intelligence and professionalism. Thank god you challenged his “aw shucks” insult. Have a great night. You deserve it.

NED ‘evening, firepups!
glad to see y’all – haven’t been able to load this page/fdl home for around an hour.
congrats to Jane, Christy, Pach, TRex, and all the posters who’ve been working for Ned….
….. congrats to the CT bloggers, volunteers, GOTV peeps
….. and most of all –
……congrats to the CT voters
who ever gets the most votes, Ned won tonight.
Hi doggies, spent a long day as a witness under direct examination today in an arbitration case, I hope I can stay awake long enough to do the happy dance with all y’all.

Me too! Making matters worse out here in CA, CNN has Anderson Cooper in his flack jacket, Headline News has Nancy Grace’s schtick, CNBC has some idiocy, and MSNBC has some wierd “they’re coming for your children!” nonsense. The only source of CT news is . . . shudder . . . Fox.
But I’m desperate . . . so Fox it is!
But thank God for the Hartford Curant. They had their site up and current all night!
..and the fat lady is singing
Bye, bye Joe
Bye, bye you pompous ass
Hello Ned the Democrat
I feel like I could cry
Goodbye you ass, goodbye
There goes Connecticut
With someone new
Ned sure looks happy
Joe sure looks blue
Joe was their Senator
Till Ned stepped in
Goodbye to tyranny
democracy wins
Bye bye Joe
Bye, bye you pompous ass
Hello Ned the Democrat
I feel like I could cry
Goodbye you ass, goodbye
Faux News doesn’t want to call it yet. :)
I am frankly shocked that Lieberman has received as many votes as he has
FINALLY! Jane! Christy! TRex! I was jonesing here in Nawlins.
God, we’re STILL awaiting Hartford! They’re notorious for being slow.

Craig @ 142
This means Joe needs to win the remainder 62-38 (if precincts are equally weighted, which I doubt) to pull it even. If the remaining precincts are overweighted he doesn’t need quite that big a margin.
The numbers are practically the same using Eric 156’s results.
(And the answer is yes, I am sufficiently geeky to have a spreadsheet to do these calculations as the numbers come in.)
never mind -double post
Aaargh….my nerves. Keep getting error messages trying to refresh….holding my breath without meaning to….my significant other has to work tonight, nobody to talk to, just the internets…thank God. And, to all in Connecticut — you’re my heroes!
(not to neglect Jane, Christy, TRex, Pachacutec, Watertiger, etc., etc. who worked so hard to help). God, this has been excited. I’m optimistic for the first time in years about taking our country back. Wooo-hooo!
karelroc @ 163
I do not think we can UNDERESTIMATE this victory. A virtual unknown political neophyte (with a lot of soul and integrity) just put a sitting US Fucking Senator OUT TO PASTURE.
NED RULZ
And so, for that matter, do the firepups at the lake.
What you see below in quotes is the comment I tried to send about 40 minutes ago! Wow, the toobz are really clogged tonight. It looks like it’s Ned for sure now, although I wish it had been a blow-out.
Still and all, this wasn’t supposed to be happening at all. Listening to the callers on C-Span is a hoot and a half. All the Repubs supporting Joe!
The respective speeches will be interesting. I expect Joe to be consistent — consistently SELFISH.
Hope this msg gets through this time!
[What I wouldn’t give to be up in CT right now. All my thanks and appreciation to y’all at HQ now.]
Here’s the seriously out-dated comment, included only because I worked so damned hard trying to get it sucked up by this here internet-thingy. :-)

Folks, I’m going to suggest that we block images loaded from FDL for the time being. If your browser can do it, please do so. It’s going better now that I’ve done that. It should relieve the strain, for now.
If you’re using Firefox, left click on an image, and choose the item “Block images from this site”. To undo this later, go to Edit/Preferences/Content and click on the Exceptions button next to the “display images” checkbox, and delete the line(s) for FDL.
Meanwhile, here’s the latest from WTNH:

Joe Lieberman 125,427 48%
Ned Lamont 133,801 52%

Updated above — but just so everyone won’t refresh, here’s the update:
9:14 pm — 25% reporting — 55% Ned and 45% Joe.
9:42 pm — 80% reporting — 53% Ned and 47 % Joe. And a bit of an odd news item: CTLocalPolitics blog reports that there was a moment of joy at Lieberman HQ when the wrong numbers were flashed up with the wrong names. Ooops.
10:48 pm — Unofficial word from Jane — the race has gone to Lamont. Lots of questions as to what Lieberman is going to do next. No call from him as yet. I asked Jane whether the speculation was that he would concede the Democratic primary and then say “see you in the General Election” or what — and there is no solid concensus on that as yet from anyone, bloggers and reporters alike. Will update this when we can. — CHS
Northwestern beats Notre Dame. Congratulations Ned, take a victory lap. You’ve earned it. And so have you Jane, and all those too numerous to name who made history tonight.

(I feel much better now . . .)
OK, of course I meant to say, we cannot OVERESTIMATE (or over hype) this victory. While the toobz were closed, I took to calming myself with spirits.
Hip hip hooray!
Anderson Cooper just said he may have results to report after the next commercial…maybe CNN will call it now :)
For Freaked-out Canadian, #128 re WNYC coverage — Brian Lehrer is a classic liberal Upper West Side Manhattan Democrat and the coverage very much encapsulates the problem with the Democratic party. He is clearly pro-Lieberman, asking the reporter at Lamont HQ how grungy the crowd is, playing Lieberman speeches before every segment, not bothering to find out any facts, in fact sort of promoting a voodoo happened about the web-crashing of Lieberman’s site. You can pick up through his coverage the smugness of the Democratic Party mainstream.
He, like the party mandarins, adore Liebeman, he’s one of them after all. Listen carefully, he’s good, if a teensy bit dismissive of the black professor of politics who came on, and to Lehrer’s surprise said the inner city black vote would go to Lamont, not Lieberman (if there’s anything these type “liberals” love about themselves it’s their being good to the help).
What’s great about this race, and this coverage is seeing the so-called liberals facades ripped off, to say nothing of their ignorance. They control the media, the money and the complete political apparatus, The Lamont victory, as much as people like Lehrer denigrate it, going with their buddy Lieberman (who’s appeared on Lehrer’s show many times) will force these “liberals” to perhaps think about what they actually stand for. With liberals like Lehrer, his boy Lieberman, it’s no wonder that the Republicans have for years said they don’t stand for anything. Let’s hope we proud progressives can sweep them into the irrelevance they so deserve.
Is anyone concerned that Hartford has not reported yet?

Lamont is winning this fair and square. If Joe continues on against Ned in the general he’s a SUPREME SHITHEAD.
*excuse my language.
And finally, it looks like CNN will call the race:
after 95% of the vote is in, and the lead is still
a 3.5% split: meaning that Lieberman would have to
win 4.25 to Lamont’s 0.75 of the remaining 5%….
And they *still* haven’t called it…
Heh, it took my comment so long to post due to the site being overloaded that the numbers are already outdated.

Would you all please wrap up this race, so I can get to my campground here in Grand Teton National Park?
Figured that the upscale Jackson Lake Lodge might have free wireless — and it does! So we settled into the lobby, listening to a pianist playing Mozart energetically, looking out at the mountains, and “wardriving” onto FDL from out here in the boonies.

Nixonian in loss, willing to cost the Democratic party a seat in the Senate to salve his ego, and crooked to a fault in the end with his crack about his $15 dollar a month site being “hacked.”

Joe – this was a joke, silly.
Now you will be remembered for the small-hearted, self-centered, whiny-voiced Quisling incumbent Senator who chose to lose two elections for his seat in three months.
Joe, you didn’t have to do this.
You could have gracelessly conceded – hey – it’s the best game you have – and been remembered as the self-centered, whiny-voiced Quisling incumbent Senator whom Ned Lamont defeated in November 2006 before winning the White House two years later.
You all do realize that if Joe does not drop out of this election by November, this will be yet another “moral” victory? Enjoy this pathetic moment in the sun…you deserve it…and then wallow in your pathetic conspiracy theories as to why you lost yet again to those Rovian/Bushitler ideals that warp our minds…bwahahahahahaha!

newtonusr @ 278
Absolutely.
Congrats! Someone should look at the final numbers in the Governor’s race vs the Senate race early on it appeared as though ~12,000 more voted in the Senate race – Republican crossovers? Subtract those from Joe’s total …
I have tears streaming down my face – with 80% of the precints reporting, I’m still afraid to believe that Lamont has won and driven out the rubber stamping, ass kissing, arrogant son of a bitch Lieberman. Can it be true that there is some hope of taking back our country from the fanatics and warmongers who turned their backs on the people who elected them and have almost driven it over the cliff? I watched Ned Lamont on the Colbert Report last week and his integrity and grit was shining through with every statement he made, the audience erupted in wild applause. I’m still stuck in Utah, where there is no hope of driving out the GOP – although Idaho is now the reddest state in the nation. Thanks Jane, TRex and everyone else who helped get the word out, we progressives should all celebrate this first victory in what is hopefully a trend for the elections in November.
Savor the victory, folks… and then get to the phones and call your Democratic senators; tell them the grassroots have spoken and it’s vital for them to get behind the Democratic candidate, not an Independent no matter how long they’ve known him. Let them know you really care about this. I’m planning to call Barbara Boxer’s office tomorrow and let her know that I will not appreciate it if she supports Joe in November.
awesome result
Lieberman should call Lamont to congratulate him and then go home with his tail between his legs – that weak bastard finally got his ass handed to him!!!
“Power to do good is the true and lawful end of aspiring”
-Francis Bacon
The lesson for all Americans is simple: if you don’t like where the country is going, you can change the course. If the people of Connecticut can force out a man of Lieberman’s fame, stature, and power, then anyone can do it anywhere. It’s in our power.
Jane and Christy–fairly or unfairly, power is going to be coming to you as a result of this. for our country’s sake don’t be shy in taking and using it. It is a true and lawful end.
And over on Huffpost the headline is that Lieberman has conceded (wild cheering)!!!
LG/Aquaria, lol!
From Kos on front page at DailyKos:
And one thing Kos didn’t add: Contact the DSCC and tell them you’re cutting them off if they spend one cent on Lieberman, that they should be done with him. Period.
Lamont is gracious, Lieberman nasty; perfect concession speeches.
A great triumph for progressives, now the fun work begins — where will the media & Democrat mandarins go…
Time is wasting — Rayne is right esp #4.

Don’t let them go home alone tonight…
Time to wipe off the greasepaint, Jaded Joey …RepubliClown College isn’t hiring second-raters for the third ring anymore.
Congratulations to Mr. Lamont, his campaign staff and workers, and all interested parties who labored to see the truth prevail.
NEXT!
With 98% of the precincts reporting, the Hartford Courant has called the election for Lamont.
Time for a well-deserved happy dance, Jane!
Liberloosers last gasp at the unconcension speech. Go to our website [Donate] when it is unhacked! CSPAN 2 great equal time coverage.
broken thread ???
Sasha @ 131
Don’t know if anyone else has brought this over here yet, but Friar over at DKos has suggested that we contact Dem Senators and Govs tomorrow to get them to pressure Lieberman to abandon his Indy bid.
We don’t need another Lamont – Lieberman battle sucking all the energy and resources out of other races around the country.
Thanks to all who can help on this.
I just sent this message to Joe via his Senate site
Senator Lieberman,
I’ve just listened to your concession speech and am sitting at my computer in AMAZEMENT. I’m saddened and miffed by the fact that you want to call yourself a Democrat as you stand there causing disunity in the party.
I’m not sure what makes you think that you own the seat or that you deserve to be the US Senator from CT, but it’s sure shocking progressives in every corner of the country. You simply don’t get it!

I saw this message today:
Tuesday, Aug. 08, 2006
“I feel they were flirting with the other guy for a while, wanting to send me a message. I got their message.”
— Sen. Joe Lieberman
Democrat from Connecticut, on why voters supported his primary challenger Ned Lamont
***********************
My family and I are very sad because we know Joe that you actually didn’t get the message.
There is no good news from Iraq, there is no good news from the Congress, we have our President sending weapons to Israel to kill innocents in Lebanon with American tax dollars. We have our president spying on our e-mail, listening to our phone calls, and you know the rest of it better than I do. Sir, do you understand how critical it is for us to take back the House and Senate in November? Do you understand that the loss of the Senate seat in CT could cause us to put a screeching halt to taking back the Senate? There has never been a more critical time in the history of this country, and you’re going to send the message to the Democrats in CT that you’re the only one who can represent them in the US Senate? Wow Joe, do you have an ego problem or something? Joe, do you really care about America? It appears that REALITY shows that you seriously don’t give a damn.
And I forgot this one Joe: we called, we wrote, we sent a million e-mails asking you to vote NO on cloture on Alito. You think that your vote NO on Alito was enough because you think we’re stupid and you think that we don’t know what your NO on cloture vote meant. By voting YES on cloture, you assured this criminal administration that you and your colleagues have no intention of doing any kind of oversight on all of the crimes of this administration.
Joe, shame on you. If you don’t understand this message, then you deserve to spend the rest of your life in hell because you failed at the most critical moment in American history. You “kissed” and you rubberstamped every evil action that this administration has carried out against the US Constitution, against the USA and against people around the world who are suffering because of the Bush/Cheney criminal cabal.
You Senator were in there with them every step of the way as they destroyed this country.
I beg Mr. Lamont to get very serious about making this a campaign to reveal the ENTIRE truth about the destruction this criminal administration has caused America.
And by the way Senator, I want you to ask your staff to do some research on the recent trip to Jordan by 14 women, including Cindy Sheehan, the peace activist from California who lost her son in Iraq.
Cindy and the Code Pink staff met with members of the Iraqi parliament. If you are serious about loving this country, then you need to contact Diane Wilson or Cindy Sheehan at Code Pink and ask them to meet with you. Do this if you really care about this country. I’m sure they will talk to you because YOU SIR need to hear from this sincere group of average American women who have a message from you and the Congress from members of the Iraqi parliament. They have a message about civil war, the hellish destruction of the country of Iraq, and their wish for American soldiers, the Bush private militia/mercenaries and their Vatican-sized embassy to get the @#$@ out of their country. Do you remember the contractors that you authorized to drive trucks and help interrogate the Iraqi war criminals? They refuse permanent bases and they want NO sign of the American government in Iraq. They (the members of the Iraqi parliament) demand an immediate withdrawal of American troops from Iraq. You sir need to hear that message and do something about it.
Shame on you Senator! You have blood on your hands. You allowed Bush to cause such harm to American people that it will be very difficult for us to recover. Joe, what about the Supreme Court with Alito and Roberts? Have you paid attention to their votes? Do you understand what this means to the American people? Are you proud of your vote and the complete lack of backbone from the Congress (both the House and Senate).
Shame, shame, shame, shame. We implore you to take a deep breath and tell your campaign staff and supporters that you have had a change of heart. Let them know that you are a REAL Democrat and you love America and your party.
After you do that, we’ll know who you are and you’ll regain our respect. Until then, you can be sure that you are on the road to hell. Turn toward the center path and walk forward. Make a change in your life. Get a REAL JOB and make some REAL MONEY. You sir can do things (like Tom Daschle did) to help America. Let go of your ego and PROVE IT. Show us that you love America. How? Quit NOW!
this is great news! i’ve been lurking for awhile out of interest, but i have to say i find this bunch one of the most entertaining on all the blogs.
congratulations, NED!, and congratulations all of you here that have put your hearts and money and time and effort into pulling this off.
i bet (and hope) many dems who voted for lieberman today will vote for the OFFICIAL DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FOR U.S. SENATOR FROM CONNECTICUT, NED LAMONT, in november.
i also think ned should’ve called joe on not even having the decency to give a proper concession speech. seriously, that was a concession speech? taking shots at your competitor and fellow democrat shows no class…
oh i forgot, now you’re not a democrat, are you joe?
after november, you can be whatever you want, joe. ’cause yer not gonna be a senator no more!
methinks i need to give ned’s campaign some cash.
