CTBob took the above video at a volunteer firefighters’ carnival in Orange — in it, Candy Crowley of CNN asks Ned Lamont some questions about his stance versus Joe Lieberman’s on Iraq, on foreign policy, and on a whole host of other issues. I think Ned does a fantastic job of patiently trying to explain his stance on a number of issues in the face of the typical DC media "gotcha" attempt questions that Crowley is throwing out at him.
The national media seems a bit flummoxed these days, trying to come up with an explanation of Lamont’s popularity among Connecticut voters. And his popularity stretching beyond CT to the rest of the nation. It stems from the fact that what Lamont is saying — what his supporters are saying — what we have been talking about for months here and elsewhere in the blogosphere — intrudes on the unreality bubble that the media has created for itself. And that has to be difficult and painful for a number of journalists who, I believe, want to do their jobs well but somehow, somewhere along the line, lost that skeptical edge that you have to maintain in order to be effective inside the beltway.
The reality is this: the American public is fundamentally unhappy with how their government is being run into the ground by a bunch of schmucks who’d rather spend time figuring out more ways to dip into the pork barrel to reward their cronies than solve America’s growing list of problems. We are very unhappy with the lack of work that we are seeing from the Do Nothing Rubber Stamp Republican Congress and the perpetually-on-vacation President.
And at the top of that list is some serious unease and disgust over the mishandling of our occupation in Iraq, and the implications that these poor decisions will have on the rest of the nation for generations to come.
Joe Lieberman tried to brush aside criticisms of his record on supporting the Bush Administration’s failed policy decisions yesterday — but it is far too little, and much, much too late, for a whole lot of folks — in Connecticut and around the country. What I am hearing from nutmeggers is that they are disgusted by this craven ploy, and disturbed that Lieberman would think that they are too stupid to see through this last-ditch ass-saving maneuver.
In the end, as usual, it was all about Joe Lieberman. And that has been his problem for the last few years in Connecticut, hasn’t it?
Here’s the reality on the ground for our men and women in uniform in Iraq: (via Atrios)
…For infantrymen, the sweat rarely stops flowing in the summer, leaving many with heat rash. Troops complain that they sweat through their clothing, their wallets, and even their boots. Some remember awful mornings where they awake with polyester panchos stuck to their bodies.
In some outposts where washing machines are not available, troops hang their soaked uniforms in the sun _ leaving them stiff and marked with large salt stains from dried sweat. Some find clumps of salt inside their pockets.
On sprawling logistics bases, support troops in offices are mostly immune to the heat. "Hey, it’s only 106 today," cheerfully said one Marine as he walked to a dining hall on the Taqqadum air base in western Iraq.
Though most U.S. infantrymen now have air conditioned Humvees, the insurgent threat has also added to the array of clothing they must wear. Many Marines are now required to wear flame retardant suits, gloves and goggles to protect themselves from roadside bombs.
To some troops, the outside danger is less grating than the temperature.
"Everything else doesn’t bother me. It’s the heat threat gets to me," said Lance Cpl. John Ursery of Raleigh, N.C., as he stood in the shade of a sand barrier in Ramadi, one of Iraq’s most dangerous cities.
Some Marines claim to have seen the rubber on their Humvee tires start to melt. But the heat also helps create barracks lore that stretches the boundaries of reality….
And that is without discussing the IEDs, the rocket launchers, the separation from families, the fourth or fifth tour for some of these folks in country in Iraq and Afghanistan, the lack of needed equipment and supplies…the list goes on and on. You do not ask men and women to endure the fear, the exhaustion, the day in and day out struggle to stay alive in our nation’s uniform, you do not put them in harm’s way ever without ascertaining the viability and the goals of the mission, and ensuring that you have done everything possible to prevent the conflict before the shooting starts.
George Bush failed that test, and continues to fail it. And Joe Lieberman has been at his side, making excuse after excuse – propping up piss poor decisions that have made America less safe, Israel less safe, the Middle East less safe, and our allies and the rest of the world less safe as a result. That is the bottom line.
Standing up to say "enough!" when no one else is saying it, but when it needs to be said because what is being done is not working — that’s being a statesman. Saying it when you are behind in the polls and you know that your constituents have been at that position for months now…well, that’s just being a politician who wants to keep his job, now isn’t it? But does Joe Lieberman actually mean it? Who the hell knows…I’m not even certain he does after his "Iraq is better and worse" performance from Sunday. (Thanks C&L.)
John Zogby has some thoughts along these lines up on HuffPo, but he’s much more optimistic than I am about where the polls are for Lamont. I think this race is going down to the wire. But I have to say, in all honesty, that Ned Lamont is up at all in the polls is akin to a miracle the way our system generally favors incumbents.
That has to scare the bejeebers out of politicians around the country. And it should. Grassroots support from everyday Americans — small business owners, disaffected union members, teachers, grandparents, long-time friends of Joe Lieberman even — all are standing up and saying enough.
If you can get to Connecticut at all to volunteer for the Lamont campaign, please do so. I don’t ask this lightly. I know you have jobs and family responsibilities and all of those things that we all have to do. I can’t make it — my joint issues have flared up and travel is impossible for me at the moment, and it is heartbreaking. But if you can get to CT to help out, do it for me, because I desperately want to be there to help push things to the end.
GOTV is going to be the crucial means for winning this election for Ned Lamont. And to do GOTV, you have to have boots on the ground. Period. Joe Lieberman has a whole lot of lobbyist and crony money on his side and a hired army of door knockers — Ned Lamont has volunteers with a whole lot of heart. Won’t you join them? Please, if you can get to Connecticut, they could sure use your set of hands…and if you live in Connecticut, even a couple of hours could mean the vote that pushes Ned over the top.
UPDATE: Mwahahaha…just go read TBogg.

And my response was:
But JOE’s not using the war for partisan political purposes, is he? If I were Max Cleland, I would have cringed down to my core at having my name invoked by this man.
I said this last night, and I will say it again. The time for Joe Lieberman to do something about that “heavy responsibility” he feels about Iraq was months ago, when Jack Murtha was getting savaged for speaking out about what needed to be done. His support, at that time, might have made a difference, but for it to come now is just pandering at its worst.
If I were Ned Lamont, or a member of his campaign team, I would be out talking about this very real choice. Do they want someone who stands back and waits to see what the prevailing wisdom is before taking a stand? Do they want someone whose talk is about principles, but whose actions are about protecting his own rear? Do they want someone who understands that working with the other party does not mean just giving in, but fighting and fighting hard?
I think there’s a reason Joe has stayed away from CT for so long – the more you see of him, the less you like him.
Is Jane going to be able to hang out at headquarters while the results come in tomorrow?
Oh man…I feel like a kid before Christmas!!!
This could be one of the greatest events in the history of our Democracy! True people power letting our government know that it’s time to change. The ripples that will be sent out from this event cannot be underestimated. Even if Ned does loose…if Joe wins by less than 5-10% it’s going to scare the crap out of a lot of politicans.
NED!
Candy….
I read somewhere, maybe here, can’t remember, that incumbency and its attenuent establishment advantages tend to mean five per cent boost over polling numbers in primary races. If that’s true, the race is pretty much dead even if Lamont is at 6.
And I’m with Anne, I’d love to know what the hell Max Cleland is thinking.
Candy is dandy but Lamont won’t rot your teeth …

I sincerely hope the people of Connecticut kick Joe Lieberman’s ass to the curb.Useless.
please hit F5 — I revised and extended my remarks (with unanimous consent)
Candy Crowley–that mendacious twit. The only times I’ve seen her ugly face is when I’m in waiting rooms. I remember having one show forced on me where all she could ask was, “And how does that affect the Republicans’ chances this year?” or something like that. No matter what the issue, How does that affect the Republicans?
I’ve gotten to the point that I tell the office managers at these places to turn off the damned TVs, rather than subjecting me to nonsense like that. I’m in a waiting room because I don’t feel good. Please don’t make it worse.

Or your brain, the more common decay caused by Crowley.
Re fundamentals . . .
We the people of the United States, in order to
form a more perfect union,
establish justice,
insure domestic tranquility,
provide for the common defense,
promote the general welfare, and
secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity,
do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
If you were singing to yourself as you read that (America Rock rocks!!) get out there and sing it out loud.
Funny things happen when you sing out loud, just walking down the street. People sometimes look at you, maybe move to the other side of the street, things like that. But on election eve in CT, I’ll bet you’ll find some folks who will join in on the song without being asked. In harmony.
So sing it while you walk around passing out flyers, sing it while you hold up your Ned signs, sing it while you go to the polls tomorrow.
We the people. That’s what this is about.
Go Ned!
Where are you FITZ!
No real Democrat would ever compare a primary opponent to Saxby Chambliss’ shameful and unAmerican campaign against war hero Max Cleland. Lieberman fundamentally misunderstands this campaign, as well as the value and purpose of representative democracy.
He just doesn’t get it.
Oh, and I loved Candy Crowley’s last statement, which I take to mean:

Had Enough, Connecticut?

In considering Christy’s post about our men and women in uniform….the overseas votes will be counted in this primary right up until August 25th. Let’s hope this is such a decisive victory for Ned that those votes won’t change the dynamics of this race. But let’s also hope that those serving in Iraq vote for change by supporting Ned Lamont!

The language of the French-US resolution which I discussed last night is a lot worse and one sided than I expected. Unless it is extensively modified, it may get vetoed by Russia or China. If it is modified, it may get pulled or vetoed by us. A lot of the violence and the bluster of the last few days have been predicated on the notion that there would be a UN resolution that would preempt all the threats flying around.
The Bush Administration is not helping matters, nor are the French, by sponsoring such an unbalanced, resolution. As Condoleezza Rice said pushing for a vote on the pro-Israeli draft, “I know that Hezbollah said all sorts of things. I heard it all. But after the proposed resolution is approved by the Security Council, we will know who really wants to end the violence and who does not.” Unfortunately, raising up and knocking down the strawman of who wants peace based on this fatally flawed resolution is rhetoric not realism.
We are in a dangerous phase of the conflict where stupid decisions and posturing could be disastrous and where there is a lot of stupidity in the air.
Could someone who knows more about health care explain to me what the Admin is really doing with this “new health initiative?”
We know it can’t be about improving health care because they don’t give a shit about that so what is it really about? I’m guessing they want standardized IT so they can spy on our medical records easier and know what diseases/illnesses, etc., we all have so as to avoid hiring anyone who mite have hi health care costs.

Administration Aims to Set Health-Care Standards
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00651.html
By David S. Broder
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, August 7, 2006; Page A04
CHARLESTON, S.C., Aug. 6 — The Bush administration will soon launch an ambitious effort to require that all providers of federally financed health care adopt quality-measurement tools and uniform standards for their information technology, Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said Sunday.
Leavitt told a session of the National Governors Association’s annual meeting that “in a matter of weeks,” President Bush will sign an executive order setting the new requirements. He promised that by year’s end, a majority of the 100 largest private employers will sign similar contracts with the hospitals and doctors they use to care for their workers.

Christy,
And if you want to read what it’s like on the ground in Baghdad for an Iraqi, here’s an excerpt of the latest from Riverbend:
Summer of Goodbyes…
Residents of Baghdad are systematically being pushed out of the city. Some families are waking up to find a Klashnikov bullet and a letter in an envelope with the words “Leave your area or else.” The culprits behind these attacks and threats are Sadr’s followers- Mahdi Army. It’s general knowledge, although no one dares say it out loud. In the last month we’ve had two different families staying with us in our house, after having to leave their neighborhoods due to death threats and attacks. It’s not just Sunnis- it’s Shia, Arabs, Kurds- most of the middle-class areas are being targeted by militias.
Other areas are being overrun by armed Islamists. The Americans have absolutely no control in these areas. Or maybe they simply don’t want to control the areas because when there’s a clash between Sadr’s militia and another militia in a residential neighborhood, they surround the area and watch things happen.
Since the beginning of July, the men in our area have been patrolling the streets. Some of them patrol the rooftops and others sit quietly by the homemade road blocks we have on the major roads leading into the area. You cannot in any way rely on Americans or the government. You can only hope your family and friends will remain alive- not safe, not secure- just alive. That’s good enough.
For me, June marked the first month I don’t dare leave the house without a hijab, or headscarf. I don’t wear a hijab usually, but it’s no longer possible to drive around Baghdad without one. It’s just not a good idea. (Take note that when I say ‘drive’ I actually mean ‘sit in the back seat of the car’- I haven’t driven for the longest time.) Going around bare-headed in a car or in the street also puts the family members with you in danger. You risk hearing something you don’t want to hear and then the father or the brother or cousin or uncle can’t just sit by and let it happen. I haven’t driven for the longest time. If you’re a female, you risk being attacked.
The whole article is sadly well worth reading:

We still need responses to our Help Wanted ad, FYI!!
See the previous post downstairs for details.
it’s 9pm in Baghdad and the temperature is still up at 107ºF but it’s dry heat so the humidity dont make you sweat too much …
Lamont handled that so beautifully — he’s articulate in his responses, upbeat, thoughtful, intelligent (wow, now that I think of it, he is a guy I’d like to have a beer with, and I want him as a political leader!).
I am so, so hoping he wins tomorrow. Ned, you make me proud to be a Democrat.

LOL! Yeah Candy isn’t that dandy. I must say I was surprised at how fawning, dare I say respectful, she seemed with the future Senator Ted Lamont in this video – caught me by surprise – sounded like she may be on Xanax. Whatever works – LOL! Will be interesting to see if any clips of her interview show up on MSM.
Good on you CT Bob!

Christy mentioned this a few threads ago. I usually take oil price quotes from later in the day but this will give you a flavor of what is currently going on.
Nymex Crude Future $76.35, up $1.59
Dated Brent Spot $78.03, up $1.75
WTI Cushing Spot $76.40, up $1.64
Gas prices continue to inch toward their all time high. Oil prices had been declining below the $75 level as tropical storm Chris weakened reducing threats to production in the Gulf of Mexico but spike today as BP shut down its production at Prudhoe Bay due to corrosion in a pipeline. Production there accounts for 8% of US production or about 400,000 bbl/day. The announcement was a surprise and you really have to wonder about management and oversight issues if corrosion, a chronic problem, should necessitate an emergency response on this scale. This incident underlines the skittishness of oil markets and the importance of speculative pressures that are currently driving them.
Fini, when the sun’s o’er the yardarm today, I be raising a glass . . .

“Anonymous Liberal” has a posting on Glenn Greenwald’s site this morning that offers some insight on why people are so confused:
The “He Said/She Said” modus operendi of the MSM plays right into the hands of the likes of Rove et al who have learned to exploit the situation.

An arts festival in my town this week featured a gentleman who crafted beautiful glass vases. His last name was Leiberman. While admiring his artwork, I mentioned Joe Leiberman and whether they were related. This guy went on to talk about his general disdain for Joe and I quote “he’s a Republican in Democratic clothing…” The artist wasn’t from CT, but had heard of Lamont and wished him success. I gave him one of my patented firedoglake.com business cards that I had made.
Our circle is widening. While Joe’s island gets smaller and smaller.
I woke up to this story on NPR this morning:
Goad Diapers and Naughty Vegetables Bring Death Sentence in Iraq
Such a lovely companion to Riverbend’s latest post.
Iraq’s got more cell phones, cars and satellite dishes but people die if they put the cucumber too close to the tomatoes in the market and/or fail to diaper their goats. (Sharkebabe, take note please.)
Great. That’s just frickin’ great.

Actually, it is about improving health care. Standardizing all this stuff makes records access easier for providers. The privacy angle is covered by HIPAA, not that violating HIPAA would cause the Preznit (or any of his minions) to lose a moment’s sleep.

anybody hear from egregious today?
Ned did a great job at not falling into Candy’s baited trap.
Franco @ 36
What about Cheney? Haven’t seen nor heard from him in quite a while. Maybe Rummy or Condi? . . .
Oh well, one can dream . . .
CNN: LAX’s instrument-landing system has failed; current thick overcast requires IFR landings, so for c. the last 30 minutes, controllers been having to talk all traffic in on ONE runway, one-plane-at-a-time (usual rate: 60-70 planes/hr). May also soon “turn the airport around” by reversing usual direction of take-offs/landings.
Bottom line: anyone flying in the western US is prolly in for a loooong day . . .
The triangle is closing, and this race is responsible. This race is breaking all the media narratives, and scaring the dickens out of incumbents. As every thoughtful member of the blogosphere knows, we are too few and too limited in our access to media to have direct effects on elections and on coverage.
Our narrative on what’s going on here–that the blogosphere is not driving this movement, but is reflecting it–needs to make its way into the MSM. Immediately after this race, win or lose, we’ll be blamed for doing damage to the democratic party, for forcing the party to the left, for waging internecine battles and so forth.
That’s okay. At this point, it’s a matter of time. Ned represents the triangle closing on the elected official side. He understands what’s going on and he reflects the narrative in the interview with Crowley. Did you notice how canned and substanceless her questions were? Ned’s laid out the blueprint for making the MSM focus on the fact that there is a broad failure on the part of the media to report what is actually going on in America. As Murtha said last December (and Ned repeats), the citizens are ahead of the elected officials. They’re ahead of media. This race is the catalyst that’s been needed to get the media off their old tropes.
lotus, here is a picture of Phreak I just uploaded to Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/l…..209209740/
I really miss him, he was the smartest animal I ever knew.
Thank you for posting the interview. I was very impressed by Mr. Lamont’s calm, intelligent responses to such obnoxious questions. I’ve been doing short daily stints on Moveon.org’s virtual phone banks–sure get a lot of answering machines.

OldCoastie @ 41
Egregious dropped into the Late Night thread around 10:30pm FDL time, and mentioned heading off to work. Hope today’s better than yesterday.
Peterr – thanks… I hope today is better too…
The thing which is so slimy about JoMo and his “supporters” is that the issues and HIS performance for 18 yrs are before the CT electorate and Ned has staked out some reasonable positions, which seem to resonnate with the voters. If they choose Ned, JoMo as a good democrat is supposed to support him. That he is not, or refuses to say he would so far is rather repulsive and makes the senate seat about HIM, not his principles… his need for power and pushing HIS agenda. This is annoying the voters.
I hope and trust he loses. CT needs someone who speaks FOR and to them and LISTENS and responds to THEIR needs.
Crowley is just one more of the mendacious “reporters” who try to put words into the mouths of interviewees. She has absorbed the party line, the conventional wisdom. Whether she believes the CW is beside the point, she strives to make it so, tries to shoehorn the responses into the neat boxes so as to serve her masters. They have ready, dismissive replies to to the predefined issues that the boxes represent. I’m pleased that Ned refuses to play that game.
Oh yeah, Fini — lookit the smarts in his gaze. My Kate may be the sweetest, easiest-going puddytat of all I’ve served, but she’s . . . somewhat vacant. No such possibility as to Phreak, it’s plain.
Made the mistake of channel surfing just now – bombs away ongoing in Lebanon, crisis at LAX shutting down all arrivals and landings, American Airlines headed for Boston back on the ground in London after terrorist alert and how is your day going Georgie Porgie, Deadeye Dick and Condescending Condi?
Aghhhhh!
Ain’t it the truth, Anne H. I may have to go back to bed before I can handle one more This Just In today.
The MSM is astonishing. After two close (stolen) elections and six years of watching polls, they seem to be surprised that there are a lot of very angry people.

“Religious leadership” has nothing to do with it. They can’t listen respectfully to anybody, because they hold in contempt anybody who doesn’t inforce or enforce their own views.
OldCoastie, egregious sounded just right today, too. (Good deal that hearing how much you’re loved/valued/forgiven can do that for ya, innit.)
that’s good to hear, lotus – things definitely didn’t sound right yesterday…
Minnesotachuck #35,
I think that wading through the mountains of information is the new paradigm. I don’t think it is informational anarchy. Blogs we trust such as Glenn’s and firedoglake can help us sift through all the data and assess it. Many of us used to think we could leave the media and the government to do much of that for us. No more. Time and time again we see the corporate media reflecting corporate, not journalistic, values and the government more interested in propaganda than information.
The blogosphere has allowed many here to focus in on the race in Connecticut, to keep it honest, and to have an impact on it. The same is true when we are tracking the illegalities and stupidities of the Bush Administration or the lies they tell. This is a powerful tool we are creating. It checks the facts and finds the sources. It remembers and analyzes when many bank upon the public’s forgetfulness and short attention span. But it is not easy or automatic. It is hard work, as Bush might say, but worthwhile.
Candy Crowley is a tool.
Naaaah.
Headline on RawStory: Santorum gaining in race; Huge cash advantage; Soon…
Oh, Fini, my (not so) little guy looks an awful lot like your Phreak, and is also very smart. I’ll be thinking of you and Phreak tonight.
What a disgusting person Candy Crowley is. I wonder if her ‘questions’ came on RNC letterhead?
And I’m sorry, but why does it not surprise me that she’s got her hand at her mouth the whole time she’s talking?
Oral fixation issues, that one.
Fini –
That picture of Phreak is so beautiful — what a nice kitty! I ‘m so sorry for your loss, but you’ve done everything you can do.
Cats know best, and if Phreak is alive and well, he’ll come home. $1,200 cat operations are not something normal people can afford, and there’s no way of knowing whether the operation would have been successful.
Once things have calmed down, there are lots of other kitties out there that need good homes — I’m sure a purrfect new friend will come your way.
lotus @ 53
He was really really evil genius smart. He could open doors – even closed ones. If there was the tiniest crack in the door or the lock didnt latch, he could open the heavy front door and escape outside which he loved dearly.
He also taught the other cats the same trick, he would open his cat food bag and feed himself if I didn’t get to him quick enough and was the best watchcat of any animal i’ve ever lived with. If someone started walking onto the property he would start a specific wailing that told me so. He was never formally trained but managed to figure this all out on his own.
Thank you, Christy and commenters. This place gives me so much hope and so much useful and helpful information. I’m grateful to you all. Go NED! And Trex, hope the trip home is more uneventful!
what a great performance by lamont in the sputtering face of crowley. it’s great when we get to see exactly how reporters speak to their interview subjects from the independent, 3rd person perspective – she looks almost nervous, trying to figure out the best gotcha questioning she can.
lamont handled her perfectly. and you could sense her disappointment at not having pigeon-holed him as she had intended.
i simply cannot stand her.
Notice that Crowley’s the one to extend her hand to Ned and “break role” at the end. Obviously she thinks she and her producer will be covering him in future, so she be’t chummy-up.
The Nefarious Leslie @ 63
Thank you so much. I’ve noticed the grey/black tabbies like Phreak tend to have some sort of extra intelligence to them of all the ones I’ve met. There may be something there, there.
-ck- @ 65
I’ve got my hands full with the other two cats, so I won’t be taking in any new kitties for some time. Oatmeal and Jesse Owens are smart as hell too and are making things easier for me last few days. They sense my loss and miss Phreak too.
CEO@56
Ain’t that just a mystery?! Ha!
Regardless of who the Mystery VIP is, the response from Ned should be (I blocke-quoted it to make it easier to read):
(sorry this is so long – I got a little carried away!)
Notice that Crowley’s the one to extend her hand to Ned and “break role” at the end. Obviously she thinks she and her producer will be covering him in future, so she be’t chummy-up.
Ned, of course, doesn’t break role because he hasn’t climbed into one to begin with.
Maybe another (subliminal) reason I respond to him the way I do is that he sounds so much like J&RFK to me. That may not impress Nutmeggers the way it does Southerners, of course, but it sure works for me!
Man, her tells were just amazing. Covering her mouth, touching her face – she’s no journalist, just a shill.
lotus – guess the only safe space for we disheartened little firepup/lambs -and in our case – Mules – on this Monday are the links. Darkblack – you have mail. ;~)
Well, I just put in for a personal day and will head up to Connecticut tomorrow to do whatever. We’ve come way too far to lose this race by a hair.
Anne H, no doubt our wandering would be heavenly, but as to my game … eh, not so much. What I’d give to be with you right now, right there. Thanks a million for the imagery!
lotus @ 69
I like that and how the producer quickly introduced himself. I think they liked him.
If I were there as a journalist I’d respect his honesty in contrast to the spin of b.s. and question dodging (”You just don’t stop, do you?”) from Lieberman.

Candy wants candy! Ned better bring her some candy next time they talk (although obviously she’s made it clear that she’ll not be at the shipyard at 6:15 the next morning!)
No wonder TradMed is buying the “terrified of Ned & The Bloggers” story from the GOP and the far right: Ned makes it clear he’s got her number. Although the man’s got manners and poise, his mama should be proud….
I watched one of the talking head shows yesterday, it had a panel consisting of Cokie Roberts, Sam Donaldson and George Will. All right wingers and you could just see the concern pouring off of them. They were in agreement that it would be a terrible disaster for the Democratic party if Joe lost the primary. It was an absolute shame that it was forcing the Dems to play to their base. Oh, and it just showed up the huge split in the party.
My thought was that the only split in the party is the one between the leadership and the rest of us. Which is precisely why we’re working so hard to dump Joe. Any lesser messages do not seem to get through
Lieberboy is a NEOCON. He is a co-chairman for “Committee on the Present Danger” and is a distinguished advisor for the “Foundation For Defense of Democracies” -see a list of their members here- http://www.defenddemocracy.org…..aphies.htm
It’s a Who’s Who of neocons including most of the members from PNAC.
looks like somthing interesting is going on….Lieberman wouldn’t be calling in a GOOPer to help him. It’s gotta be Hillary, no? Al has cancelled his SS detail, right? He wouldn’t do this to me…..
OH God, please let this be our Next Senator. He handled himself SO very well.
If Ned pulls this off, DESPITE Joe’s incumbency, his Huge war chest of money, his name recognition, the CT media backing him 100%, the State and National Democratic politicians backing him up, go out and look for the Big Star in the Sky! It will be a miracle that the people of CT are that broad and open minded that they demanded a change in who represents them in DC!
YOU GO NED.
tom — chicago # 20 and Bargain Countertenor #40,
Standardization is good since 25% to 30% of the private healthcare dollar goes to overhead as compared to a little more than 7% IIRC for Medicare. But there is standardization and standardization. I think the subtext here is that this is a “private enterprise” solution and may be intended to preempt calls for government supervised standards. Even so, it is far from a mandate for the whole industry and somehow I have my doubts that 100 or more corporate entities can establish a uniform anything. Parenthetically, if anyone tells you that private enterprise is always better than “government interference”, hit them over the head with the private enterprise monster that is US healthcare.
Anne at 10:49 am –
You should post that at the official Lamont Blog, so Tim Tagaris can see it.

For everyone in Connecticut doing GOTV, please remember — Democratic voter databases are nortorious for being crappy, as are most Democratic GOTV efforts.
If Joe Lieberman can identify and get his voters to the polls, he will win. We have to make sure all of the Ned Lamont supporters turn out and vote, or this will be the biggest upset of George Bush’s career.
Steve Soto asked how long it will take for HoJo to forget all of the campaign promises he’s made — it will happen 2 nano-seconds after the polls close.
Go, NED LAMONT!!! Get Out The Vote!!!
Anne, that was just great! Sent it to the Lamont camp and see if they can use/get ideas from it. Excellent writing!
Hilde 39 – just unbelievable. Btw diapers wouldn’t last long on my goats – they’d make a meal of em in half a minute.
Fini I add my sorrow & condolences over Phreak. He looks a lot like my Livingston but more intelligent.
Absolutely fantastic post Christy. A
Flummoxed is a good word for it – they want it to be that Lamont is some hippy dippy challenger that they can equate with some leftwing outerbranch. He just keeps refusing to fit their projection, though. A wealthy guy who made a lot of his money himself, using a fact based reality. Who also cares about education in a way that extends beyond a reading of My Pet Goat.
The concern pundits (condits?) should be concerned. Propganda is just another form of slang. The listeners are figuring it out.
I’m only going to say this one time today: enough with the sly chubby references. Not cool. I have a dear friend who is morbidly obese due to a physiological issue for which she is on her tenth different medication, to no avail, and I have seen her endure all sorts of snickers, outright rudeness, stares and worse from people who felt it was their given right to let her know that her obesity offended them. If you have ever sat with a friend who was heartbroken over teasing or worse for an issue that they cannot control, you’d know not to do this to folks who are overweight. ‘Nough said.
Fini – Love to you and Phreak. His eyes bespeak his intelligence. Ever think that he could be in CT working on Ned’s campaign?
I know that my pets who have gone on before me are busy working for the greater good. I’m sure of it.
Go Phreak and Ned!
Ooh, just came across this sweet quote from HoJo during the 2004 primary debates:
Candy Crowley was funny. It reminded me of the first time Kos was on Russert. Russert was completely Flummoxed when Kos refused to play his left, right, liberal etc label game.
Can anyone fluent in body language tell me what Candy was saying, fiddling with her lips all through the interview, even when she was asking Ned questions? That was so weird. I thought at first she was just a bystander deep in thought.
Fini – to Phreak. My condolences. I had a cat, looked just like Phreak, her name was Sefrunda (means shy one in Sicilian, or so my boyfriend told me). She disappeared for three weeks once. BF said say goodbye, I said not yet. She’d gotten trapped in a neighbor’s shed and streaked home as soon as the neighbor opened the door again. Skinny, phreaked out but alive. I wish the same for you.
OhioBlue @ 91
HAHAHA…I needed this one, thank you. I’m positive if Phreak could vote tomorrow he would vote for Ned.
True story, when I was watching CNN that fateful day in December 2000 and they announced the Supreme Court decision that gave our country to the BushCo hordes, Phreak horked up the biggest hairball of his life about three seconds later all over the TV set. That’s my boy!
JeffreyW at 52
Well put!
…..
TeddySanFran at 17
That last startled Crowley-quote struck you too eh?! (I figure Ned was chuckling a little “gotcha” inside too – a testament to his smoothness & amazing self control that it didn’t show at all in the video – tee hee)
My mind almost instantly melted with a picture of dear, silky-ear -OOPS! -voiced Candy at sun-up, peering thru the CT fog, trying to figure out which side of that silly colorized wig is “UP”.
Ned out front! Just LOVE it!
Also agree with Christy bigtime. Please don’t let up one iota, volunteers! And !THANKYOU! from those of us who can’t be there in person. Go NED!!! ;->
anne @ 10:49:
you should be making money writing that well. bravo.
John Dickerson in Slate has a nice little article with links on the creative use of video by Lamontollians in Connecticut …
Hello friends–hospital internet down, tried to respond earlier. Thanks for OJ, little dog :)
What I am reading this morning (well, p.m. here) is the case notes from the first successful Tetralogy of Fallot in a newborn in Russia.
Your many kind words of encouragement and prayers helped uplift us during this dangerous procedure for the critically ill child flown in from Uzbekistan.
Small world indeed, we are all connected. She survived the operation and looks good. I got to tell the mother. This is my narcotic, to see the parents with good news.
And may I say, LAMONT SURGE!!!
OT but kinda funny, as water finds its own level:
Comedian and actor Dennis Miller is joining Fox News as a contributor to “Hannity & Colmes” this autumn, according to a network executive. Miller, who did a stint on “Hannity & Colmes” in 2003 and then had his own eponymous show on CNBC, will begin weighing in on news and politics beginning Sept. 13. He also will provide commentary on the Fox News Web site.
good to see ya’, egregious! and thanks for the good news…
Mommybrain @ 94
I wish that would happen, but when I took him to the vet a few weeks ago he said Phreak was not long for the world. He has had a heart murmur for a long time and in recent weeks had not been eating regularly and was losing and gaining weight rapidly.
Just before he went MIA he was the skinniest I ever seen him, and he refused to eat even his favorite foods. I think he ran off because he knew the inevitable was upon him and wanted to spare me the pain, he was just that kind of cat.
If there’s someone at Lieberman’s HQ with a secret service detail, I think we can safely rule out Gore or Carter. They endorsed Dean, remember? It has to be one of the Clintons. With the gap narrowing, someone thinks another appearance can make a difference. My guess is Slick Willie, who is already joined at the hip to Lieberman. Slick Hillie has managed to keep a distance because (IMO) she doesn’t want to piss off the base any more than she already has. Not to mention some heavy hitter individual donors. (Take a look at that Q poll and how it breaks down by income levels.) But if it is Hillary, then she’s there to testify that HoJo did too want to fire Rummy ages ago, and she was just following him. Dumb, dumb move, though. She will have created a Kiss moment for herself that will follow her for the next two years.
Sun is just going down: 10:15pm.
((((((Fini))))))
yay egregious! still sending vibes….
Smart kitties have the hardest time — they are out there doing the cat equivalent of differential equations, while the dumb kitties just sleep and eat.
I’m kinda hoping it IS sHillary… I was reading somewhere (can’t find it now) that her negatives are as bad among Dems as Repugs…
FOX News is GOP socialism for the party apparatchiks who can’t earn an honest living.
Has it occurred to anyone that if it is Bill Clinton at Lieberman HQ, that he may be delivering the party elder message that if Joe loses, even by one vote, the campaign is finito? For the good of the party?
New poll shows statistical tie heading into Tuesday’s Democratic primary – subheading from MSNBC Tom Curry story “Lieberman gains ground against Lamont”
Maybe Crowley is (belatedly) coming around, but the MSM has lots of ill will toward Lamount and especially the “left wing “blogosphere”. The story I’ve quoted literally calls 51-46 a tie. Yes its within the margin or error (plus/minus 3%), but so is 54-43. Talk about spinning things as positive as possible. He even automatically assumes the best for Lieberman and quotes the previous poll – which was 54-41 favor of Lamount – as a 7 point poll.
This is nothing new, but its just a reminder of how far we have to go, and how much “eye opening” is needed among the MSM.
HEY, egregious! How’s Boris coming along today?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 108
Let’s hope so…that would be the prudent thing to be doing today for someone like Big Dog.
Barbara B- If Hillary’s there to vouch for JoMo as a member of the fire Rummy caucus, I hope Lamont has JoMo’s very specific post-Abu Grahib FoxNews defense of Rumsfeld (and accusation of those Dems calling for his firing as “politicizing the war” loaded in the fax machines. And, if it is Hillary, someone on her staff needs to show her the responses her name got from some Dems that Kos had up this am.
(Maybe it’s just Ladybird Johnson dropping off some flowers?).
Christy Hardin Smith @ 108
Sure makes more sense than any other possible scenario, Christy. Le’s hide ‘n’watch and see who comes out . . .
If that IS Hillary in the Lieberman Stamford office (see connecticutblog.com), then that is the final straw as far as I am concerned. She will get no money, no support, nothing from me when she runs in 08 !
I think this video captures something that has become somewhat obscured by all the anti-Joe hoopla, i.e., that Ned Lamont is turning into one hell of a good candidate, irrespective of who he is running against. One of the things I’ve always had against Lieberman is that he is a truly shitty candidate. It’s the nasal, clueless, sactimonious scold thing. He was godawful as a VP candidate in 2000, and I’ve always thought his selection was Al Gore’s biggest mistake. I remember scratching my head after I watched Lieberman’s acceptance and wondering “WTF?” Hell, Kerry would have been a better choice, because he at least might have lived up to the hatchet man role of the VP candidate and went after Cheney’s (artificial) jugular. In contrast, Lieberman gave Dick a handjob. Lieberman moved into the hall of fame of shitty campaigning with Joementum in 2004. How the hell did this guy get re-elected so many times? To an outside observer, it looks like this was bound to happen the minute you got a halfway decent candidate to run against him, and Lamont is far beyond that. If he knocks off Joe, he may be going places, cause this guy has a brain.
HAHAHAHA TBogg cracks me up.
Hillary is smart enough to stay away from that Connecticut kerfuffle…
It looked like the RNC faxed Candy’s questions to her that morning.
Ned did handle her well, though. It’s easy to stick to the truth once you start.
Thanks, everyone – I posted it over at the official Lamont blog, so we’ll see.
yup, *ilson 118 – I think you are right… and I’m guessing Redd is right the purpose of Bill’s visit… Liarman is going to be under more pressure than he’s ever seen before…
Christy Hardin Smith @ 108
Good point. You don’t fly in someone with a Secret Service detail on the day before the election and keep it a secret if you’re hoping it’s to help your campaign. If it is Bill Clinton here to help, wouldn’t he have been making public appearances already this afternoon?
The only other thought is maybe it is Rove, and they’re strategizing how to keep control of Lieberman’s seat with a loss (Since there’s no mile-long mobile hospital team on standby it couldn’t be Cheney). Think if Lieberman does lose he’ll resign immediately so the governor can appoint a GOP replacement before the general election? It’d be such an evil move.
If the Big Dog is stumping for HoJo today, I will never forgive him — this is the worst sort of betrayal, and nothing good will come of it.
Kos and MyDD have posts on the New Hampshire focus group, where the Democrats hate Hillary as much as GOoPers. I’m not fond of her, but the rank and file loathe her.
Bill — if you stump for HoJo, it won’t help one bit.
Boris is alive. Usually a child with advanced sepsis, black blotches all over from coagulated blood, and renal failure has a poor outcome. He knew he was likely to die.
So he is alive: that’s the main victory. He continues to improved a little each day. Probably will have some extremity loss which we hope is limited to a few toes.
His infection was something he caught at home, then came to the hospital on Sunday. The diagnosis was delayed a day because, hold on, the hospital lab doesn’t work on weekends. That was part of my anguish this week. He could have started treatment a full day earlier. Stupid world.
You guys are just great. I was spilling over with joy today at our good medical news and at experiencing so much encouragement. It helps me go on.
-ck- @ 106
So true, my black cat Jesse Owens is of the eating and sleeping variety, but Phreak taught him some useful things. Jesse had a bad habit of tearing up furniture and Phreak taught him all about the scratching post for me so I could quit smacking his paws with newspaper.
And thank you egregious for the hugs, and everyone else too who has been so kind to me. The community here is so compassionate it makes a hardened Happy Warrior like myself feel touched by the sentiments expressed over the loss of my cat. I truly appreciate and love you all and I have hope for the future of our nation because of people like yourselves. You guys are true patriots.
A little bit OT:
This gem from Froomkin today:
“Biking Without Irony
——————————————————————————–
Reuters White House correspondent Steve Holland was invited to go biking with Bush on Saturday:
“Confident that a U.N. resolution on southern Lebanon was essentially complete, Bush broke away from his ranchhouse for a spin around his 1,600-acre Texas ranch, across single-track trails that he helped hack out of the dry, dusty environs.
“While some of his Democratic critics have complained he spends too much time on his bike, Bush said the exercise helps him deal with the pressures of the presidency.
“‘Riding helps clear my head, helps me deal with the stresses of the job,’ a sweat-soaked Bush said after an hour-and-20-minute ride that shot his heart rate up to 177 beats per minute at the top of one climb.
“The president set a brutal pace for his accompanying riders, who included two Secret Service agents, White House spokesman Tony Snow and this reporter, who managed to gasp his way through the 12 1/2-mile ride. . . .
“Bush does not ride quietly, constantly shouting out in his Texas twang the names of trees and geographic features and yelling at himself to pedal faster.
“‘Air assault!’ he yelled as he started one of two major climbs, up Calichi Hill, which he named for the white limestone rock from which it is formed.”
Yes, he actually yelled out “air assault.”
Fucking buffoon.
Hey for Nutmeggers who might be interested.
KCRW’s To the Point is interviewing David Lightman (?) of the Hartford Courant and he’s spinning things very pro-Lieberman.
no need for special CT medical units for Cheney — after all, hospitals are just a short walk away — right, Joe?
Christy Hardin Smith @ 108
Christy — I was thinking exactly the same thing.
I have also been thinking about those mom-types swinging for Lieberman — most of whom voted in 04 for Bush. nder $50,000 a year, a lot are divorced — single moms. Very much concerned with personal-family safety, status, future. Not a lot of time, interest or patience for politics so no particularly interested and so very easily swayed. Since life is tough, don’t like to court change.
I think it is also a demographic which is least likely to vote in a primary. One thing in the day falls behind schedule (particularly in the summer when it is harder to manage kids) and voting is the 1st to get scratched from the list.
THEREFORE, be it
RESOLVED: FDL Anne has seriously missed her true calling and must become the winningest campaign strategist/speechwriter/ad-maven on 2008!
Tbogg is too funny
I agree, the thing that makes Lamont so convincing is that wehn he moves his lips the truth comes out.
Reliably and repeatedly.
This should not be as remarkable as it is.
On a more depressing front, this survey illustrates the other side of the coin:
An electorate which is unwilling to discern lies from truth.

Otherwise known as the TFM vote.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 90
A year ago, I weighed 230 pounds. Today, I weigh 130. Not because of my sterling character and exceptional will power, but because of gastric bypass surgery. I’m 53 years old and have lived a lifetime of pain, struggle, self-loathing and etc because I could do nothing about my weight. After the surgery, the pounds melted away — not because of anything I did, but because I was lucky enough to get medical treatment for a medical problem.
My life is so much better now in so many ways. Physical, yes, but emotional too. Teasing/tormenting people for a physical fact of life is mean and it’s also stupid — but it’s also sometimes out of ignorance.
So thank you, Christy, for mentioning it; because I think most people who have teased fat people are horrified by themselves when they “get it” and they usually stop immediately.
Bill Clinton already gave what appeared to me to be nothing more than a “token” endorsement for a democratic incumbent. I’m sure he won’t be back.
Coz – 133 – I don’t think Bill is coming to stump, I think he’s only come to talk to Joe… if there were going to be a rally, it would be announced…
oF 2008, dangit!
Bergs -84
Call me crazy but I haven’t a doubt your prayers will be answered and Lamont will prevail at the polls tomorrow.
Nor am I bit surprised Ho-Jo is hiding in his headquarters – or was earlier today – poor ole thang – kinda hard to put on a happy face after staring at his internal polling data on the eve of the election.
Neither Hill or Bill will likely be calling on Joe anywhere or anymore in the Nutmeg State, IMHO.
Indeed, I know it t’aint over till the fat lady sings it out on the airways but can’t help but intuit a wide majority of CT voters are with Lamont.
Just hope (for her own sake) our Sen. Boxer has the grace & wit to call and congratulate Mr. Lamont for his exemplary campaign and primary victory.
LindaR at 132 — any time.
I always suspected that Gore chose Lieberfreak to be his running mate to insulate himself against the “loose morals” stuff that Bill stirred up. Teaming up with the Democratic scolder of Clinton was a nonverbal “Hey, I don’t do interns”.
OldCoastie @ 134
I’d still be surprised, we’ll see ; )
slightly OT, but a must-see-to-believe(!)
How could Candy Crowley pass up this gig?!

How long has Mystery VIP been there by now? Or do we know whether s/he actually IS there yet?
SusanD @ 137
That’s exactly what it was, but I think it was the campaign consultants of failure that convinced Gore he should do that. They certainly convinced Gore to do a lot of things he would have been better off not doing.
New thread, TRex reporting from HQ
About that pork barrel— I don’t think people really measure the outrageous amount of money that has been squandered and given away for political profit.
If we take back the Congress, these are the investigations to hold. War profiteering, katrina profiteering, energy profiteering, and the lobbyist business. If we make it clear, the genpop will start screaming and not stop. Then we can move on to the constitutional infractions, to torture, NSA and the rest.
But investigating the profligate use of our hard-earned money is the way to begin.
Phew. I’ve been wanting to get that off my chest for a while. I know it’s premature but, what a relief.
puppethead @ 122
CTBlogger looks at Joe’s schedule for today:
See something interesting? Joe has nothing planned from 12:50 to 5:20. Now the mystery person was spotted in Stamford with the Lieberman staff arouind 12:00. Whatever is happening, which means whatever is going on, will happen sometime from 2:30-4:30 (Hartford is about 45 mins away from Stamford. Joe’s headquarters is in Rocky Hill so either way, Joe and the mystery person would have just hooked up with each other by now.
Local people: keep your ears glued to the local talk radio. Whartever is going down, it has to go down soon as Joe is running out of time. Even if he’s cutting a new TV ad, he running out of time to air it.
Again, be on the lookout and email me with any info
This is fun to watch, whoever it is….
But why would Clinton make the effort to go to CT when a simple phone call would do the trick?

Thanks CHS for the link to TBogg, “a somewhat popular blogger.”
I really thought Lanny Davis “phoned it in” on MTP. I doubt he took away any votes from Ned, his heart did not appear to be in it.
Also, there are basically two media openings left before the polls open tomorrow. (1) Evening news tonite and (2) tomorrow’s morning papers.
As I commented earlier, I doubt if most CT voters have heard even Joezoe’s latest flip flop, he wants a “speedy end to the war”. That was in the Sunday NYT’s.
Last week as Jane noted, Joezoe claimed, falsely I’m sure, that they he was pulling his GOTV efforts. (For me that translated into creating an excuse when Ned whacks him by double digits to Ned, and “we’re saving our resources for November) That along with Joezoe’s “are you a Bill Clinton Democrat” or an “Al Shapton Democrate,” are guarandamnteed to infuriate the Big Dawg, because of the extraordinarly serious damage they do to the national Democratic party. The timing of this, today, imo favors that the Big Dawg or someone is delivering a, “win the primary or else,” message.

He could turn that one around on them.

The “He Said/She Said” modus operendi of the MSM plays right into the hands of the likes of Rove et al who have learned to exploit the situation.
Wow. Someone distilled and articulated a problem that has certainly been swirling around my own mind. Rove is a master at this strategy.
This underscores the importance of using ONLY sources willing to go ‘on the record.’ Once again, thx to Jane and CHS for keeping to that very, very high standard through all the difficult Plame reporting the past year.
It must be a very rigorous standard to hold, but I’m very grateful that you honor it. It’s becoming more and more important by the month — and, after all, just look at the fact that Rove, Libby, and Cheney originally believed that they could get away with leaking Plame’s identity specifically because they knew the press would quote them as “UNNAMED SOURCES” — or, in Scooter’s case, “a former Hill staffer” (gag me!!).
This same phenomenon has also, IMHO, made people in office think they can pull sleaze without being held accountable. They manipulate the ‘reelality’ and ‘truthiness’ as they see fit, unencumbered by ever being made accountable for their remarks or their actions.
Christy says in this post:
Have we forgotten, absolutely put aside, the fact that every reason to go to war in Iraq was false? The bottom line in the case of this country having a cabal of evil in charge, is not ‘pork’. Pork are the scraps the criminals in the White House throw to the dogs in Congress. These people want world domination. And if we forget those ‘facts’ as demonstrated by their actions, we deserve what we get.
I got bad news via a phonecall today, news I cannot discuss. But please in your efforts to GOTV, remind people that this is about our lives as we have known them and nothing less.
By gosh your summary of the reality of it was spot on, keep that quote in the vault:
You follow up on Iraq and I agree, but perhaps that has also opened eyes to other areas of how we are led.
FDL:
The reality is this: the American public is fundamentally unhappy with how their government is being run into the ground by a bunch of schmucks who’d rather spend time figuring out more ways to dip into the pork barrel to reward their cronies than solve America’s growing list of problems. We are very unhappy with the lack of work that we are seeing from the Do Nothing Rubber Stamp Republican Congress and the perpetually-on-vacation President.
