It’s Primary Eve here in CT. Emotions are running high, especially with today’s Quinnipac poll showing that Ned is down to a five point lead. It’s all down to the ground game now, GOTV, and, well, praying.
Just came from breakfast with Jane. I have met Kobe and Lucy and Katie and they’re adorable. So graceful! They went leaping and flying like a troupe of acrobats, zooming around the yard and back to leap up and put their big paws on my chest and belly. Katie even gave me a big, wet doggie-kiss. Awwwwww.
Some more money just came over the transom from the donations button, which I have taken down now. I never thought I would say this, but STOP GIVING ME MONEY! I have enough, really. It’s all taken care of now, so you needn’t feel obliged to continue to donate. If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, give it to the Lamont campaign through ActBlue.
We all wish Christy was here with us, but it is also comforting to know that she’s sitting pretty in the FDL control tower, tending the blog fires and keeping us abreast of the view from outside the battle zone.
At any rate, I should prolly get myself over to campaign HQ. Time’s a-wastin’!!
More soon!
(Photo love to gnuhaus. Awesome shot — I just love the texture on the face of the clock, just a brilliant angle for the shot. Also, we still need some Roots Project website programming help. Please take a peek and see if you can help out. Thanks! — CHS)

Right on TRex, into the breach with you…
How is the ground game going?
Was going to post this on previous thread, but figured you’d all be over here now…
Aw, geez, lotus – now you’ve gone and embarrassed me…but thank you for such high praise. *g*

thanks to maryhcr and -ck- too!

C’mon team, finish strong!
I am SO nervous about tomorrow!
Thanks, TRex, we’re in the same boat: sleep-deprived and cracked out on anxiety and excitement, blasting forward and kickin ass until the party tomorrow night in Meriden. Eyes on the prize, baby, no time to get heady. Let’s stay focused and organized. We can win this.
Namaste.
MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
Thanks all for yr kind words. Passing it along to CHS, from EPUville.

One last contribution to LaNed on the way. Wish I could do more. Thanks to all that are!
JC on a crutch ! WTF is LGF boy doing on the teevee ?!?!? and do I really want to know ?
TRex was nice enough to bank an on-the-ground update for everyone — I knew you guys were jonesing for something from CT. Everyone is manning the phones, knocking on doors, hitting all the GOTV efforts. I occasionally get a tired little phone update when someone stops for water, or a quick e-mail, but I’m as eager for updates as you guys are.
Thought this might tide everyone over for a tiny little while… :)
Those electric cars would come in handy about now…

See something interesting? Joe has nothing planned from 12:50 to 5:20. Now the mystery person was spotted in Stamford with the Lieberman staff arouind 12:00. Whatever is happening, which means whatever is going on, will happen sometime from 2:30-4:30 (Hartford is about 45 mins away from Stamford. Joe’s headquarters is in Rocky Hill so either way, Joe and the mystery person would have just hooked up with each other by now.

What are those? That sounds like a disease you get from dirty water in Third World countries.
Question about “secret service: vs. Capitol Police.
Are we sure it’s secret service?
The Capitol police guys can look every bit as intimidating…suits, ear pieces, 9mm’s visible…especially if Rape Gurney Joe has received any death threats. If he has received any…and I wouldn’t be surprised at this point…he will get a Capitol police contingent.
The other thought is a visit from Harry Reid. He has his own squad of the capitol guys.
Really…I cannot imagine that Bill or Hill want or need to be around Leiberman at all until the polls are final. They have done their duty to the party…they have split the difference on the risk, just in case Joe wins. If they’re smart, they’ll stay the Hell out of Dodge until the hand-ringing is over.

Huh, Reid or Durbin? Pelosi? none of these had occured to me, but they’re pretty low wattage for a surprise visit. And Reid especially has been pretty publicly ambivalent about Lieberman.

I helped build that pipeline in 74-75. We coated and wrapped the pipe to resist corrosion, the problem the pipeline is being shut down for now. The treatment we used was pretty good engineering for the time, but it was flawed from an actual installation point of view. We coated the pipe with a shrink-wrap plastic layer, after painting the steel pipe with an anti-corrosion sticky primer. The problem was that the pipe would then have to be transported from our yard to the place where it was welded into the system. The transportation itself required a big loader with steel tongs and flatbed trucks with steel rails, more loaders and stacks of pipe—all the time causing nicks and cuts in the wrapped coating—then the welding and application of a treatment coating in the field, sometimes at severe temps…
It’s a wonder the thing lasted this long!

Can someone explain to me why the chattering class is saying that a Lamont win will be a “disaster” for the Democratic party? The last time I checked, the Democratic party had already lost control of the Presidency, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court. And they did it all by themselves, without Ned Lamont’s help. Frankly, a “disaster” may be just what the Democratic party needs.

It is hard for me to even imagine Big Dog Bill would be holed up with Ho-Jo in CT this election eve under any circumstances….well maybe as head of the intervention team in the event of Lieberliar complete mental breakdown and supervising wrapping him in Senatorial wet sheets that only the Big Dog could be trusted to spin.

Matt Stoller says he has info that the Surprise Visitor rumor is unfounded, but doesn’t say what his info is. More interesting at MYDD is a list of last minute LieberDonors, including a gomer named Ratner (real estate mogul and owner of NJ Nets? I never heard of him) who had funnelled about twenty grand or so to Lieberman through his children and extended family. This is really disgusting, under the What’s Legal and Shouldn’t Be heading.
All I can say is how conveniently timed is the threat to the oil flow vis a vis Prudoe and BP? Do you think they cared about the rust before it became useful to ratchet up the fear level wrt resources and security right before the election? Do I think business wants to share control with government? You bet I do. Do I think it’s already having a huge influence? You bet.
In the car today I heard both Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck slamming Lamont. (I listen so you don’t have to.) They used the How Dare He challenge Lieberman approach, the Rich Man trying to buying a seat approach; the threat of the loss of the Powerful encumbent in DC crap. And of course they hammered on their mantra that liberalism is at the heart of the rot of the Democratic party. Mwahahaha. If only they weren’t so powerful and persuasive to the ignorant and fearful. They deserve less than the scorn they’ve earned with their faulty logic and downright meanheartedness.
Little do they know that the universe is already shifting to conform to a newer and batter paradigm.

the Mystery Guest kerfuffle was predicated on 2 factors — an afternoon 4-hour hole in Liebermans schedule AND the sighting of Secret Service scurrying around. A coincidental Boehner fundraising visit for the GOP makes sense but not apropos for Lieberman.
The mystery is still unsolved !
Hi, Political Wire says mystery person is Boehner campaigning for Shays. I’M nervous about tomorrow because if Lamont wins it shows that grassroots still count. Steve @89, I’ve heard the oil is shipped to Asia because it is too ’sour” (sulpher-y) to be refined for the American market – too polluting… So, with all the dire predictions for the west coast… I’m not all that sure it is true….
but it sure is easy to manipulate that information
“not to put words in Ned’s mouth…” Well, yes. But that really doesn’t seem to answer the question and does not seem very specific. For example, I clearly understand Chuck Hagel’s (R), Rep. Bob Filner’s (D), Lieberman’s and the Bushies stand on the Lebanese situation. Whether I agree with these guys or not, I know their views.
Steve asks:
“I read years ago that a large portion of Alaska oil goes to Asia because of shipping cost and other factors that make the profits better. Does anyone know if this is true and if it is what % goes to Asia.”
Untrue. All of the producers’ product goes to refineries in Washington and California. The state has shipped a small percentage of its royalty oil to Asia.

cbl, interesting take on Boehner, do you think he was “delivering a message,” from Bush? What reason would he have to be at Joezoe’s HQ?
Mayben the shrub didn’t take kindly to Joezoe’s very recent speech about wanting a “speedy end” to the war. Criticizing the Commander in Chief during a time of war, that’s treason.

I guess the only disaster that motivates petty party functionarys to wake up and take notice of something (anything?) is the likely and looming possiblity that one day, in the not so distant future, they loose control of the Democratic party, and force them to fund something more constructive to do with their lives.
Which is precisely what America needs right now.

Fortunately, I live close enough that I have no real “need” to put up a donation button, but I’ve considered it. It presents a quandary for me, because I know people appreciate what I do and would maybe want to kick in a few bucks to help me upgrade my equipment or something–but then again I’m doing fine with what I’ve got and would feel pressure to do more.

It’s my impression that Ned supports Israel’s right to *defend* itself. I wish he would come out more strongly in favor of human rights for all people, but I think it’s pretty clear he’s in the political mainstream on the Israel/Lebanon situation.
I guess he can only deal with so much at one time and so I’m not focusing on this at the moment. It is disapppointing, however.
If it’s really the Secret Service that was scurrying around Joe!’s headquarters, then the visitor has to be Clinton, a Bush family member, or Cheney. Congress doesn’t get SS protection.
Re comments here and there above about the timing of the Alaska pipeline closure: Many of us who predicted the Exxon Valdez spill, also predicted a large-scale pipeline corrosion scandal as well. It has never been an issue of “if,” but one of “when” and “how bad.”
Marksb @ #40 above barely scrapes the surface of how the corrosion problems crop up now in relationship to pipeline construction technique. I’d hate to see how much of the buried portions of the line look.

commiepinkoDemocrats.IMHO, the TM have made the situation in the US so hostile that making the points that need to be made, for example that the US kidnaps people in the Middle East all the time, is politically impossible for him. The only person who did something that
heroic, politically stupidimo was Martin Luther King when he split with LBJ over Vietnam. Dr. King, however, wasn’t running for elected office at the time.Everyone in the Middle East imo understands that a US pullout from Iraq and Afghanistan diminishes Israel’s military leverage in the region.
Jenny, you must come visit me along about January-ish some year. There’s a place called Blue Springs State Park a few miles from here. When the weather gets cold enough for long enough, the manatees ease on into there from the St. Johns River, to shelter in a crystal-clear spring near “the boil” that formed and now feeds same.
You can see the mamas and the babies and the big ol’ daddies right there. It’s a purely-beautiful spot that I’d love to share with ‘tee-lovin’ FDLers any ol’ mid-winter!
I understand Lieberman will be on Hardball today. On Matthews Sunday show, he seemed to
give a little sermon at the end, which seemed
to go against Lieberman but we’ll see what
happens today. I imagine his Corporate Masters
will see to it, that it’s a love fest. Maybe
Joe’s out of commission because of last minute
television interviews and the MSM will be more
than happy to aid and assit in giving Joe all
the air time he requests.
Teddy – I draw on a lot of yellow tie experience that I mentioned when Christy & Jane were being chastrolled for not going after Markos buddy for his SEC whatever. After painting with the broad
bushbrush, darned if Imman’s son didn’t go buy HIM a yellow tie.I still stand buy it though – you can tell a lot about someone from their ties, and the yellow banker ties speak their own language. ;)
BarbB – my bibliographers as a concept is pretty funny. If ever there were feet that weren’t of note, they’re mine. Last night there was another Mary and it happens enough that I’m thinking I need a new name, and I refuse to go with adding middle parts of my own (I fought too long and hard against MaryBeth to pick up the pompoms now).
Mary for now @ 118
A 707, as everybody knows.
Manatees are wonderful. I used to live between Cedar Key and Gainesville, Fl. and spent many wonderful times diving Manatee Springs with these fabulous and friendly creatures. Them swimming so far north is troubling. Global warming?
our family adopted Murray almost 15 years ago – the college girl was obsessed with them (as was her mother 30 years prior)

John Casper:
Yes, as passionate as I am at the moment wrt what I consider Israel’s war crimes, I cannot fault Ned for not taking on the whole world. Your point about Martin Luther King is spot on!
Let’s just get Ned into play as a senator and I think he will do great things. I really believe that.

Thanks for the invite. My parents live in Boca Raton and I do visit them several times a year… I might take you up on that!

Er… you do live in Florida, yes?
Old Sow, There have been a number of nasty pipeline leaks reported over the last year, and most leaks are not reported. Also, I understand the permafrost is sagging (thawing due to general warming) and some supports are moving, causing welds to fail and small leaks to become gushers. I get the impression that the pipeline is a mess right now.
Lotus, there were so many people working the pipeline. Lot of Texans. It was probably the most interesting time of my life. I met a woman who was fondly described by my foreman, in his late sixties at least, “the oldest living whore in Alaska”. I met a welder from Mexico that was running an apartment full of prostitutes in Valdez–and a nicer group of people you couldn’t find. I knew a man who stayed sober in after-midnight poker and dice games and raked in thousands a night. Another guy imported hash by UPS packages in Valdez and was stuffing all the gain into a Bank of ALaska account to finance his education and future business. Two Aleuts I worked with that grew up in the little Aleut village that used to be Valdez, who told me magical stories of what it used to be like. I cried when they talked about their life now, and when they would go off to drink themselves into a stupor on Saturday night through Monday. It was like living in a Ken Kesey novel.
BarbB – pony has a fan and is good – thanks for asking. His “formal” name is Rascal and he’s not sure about a part of the Tommy Yum lyrics, but he otherwise loves having me sing the song to him (have you had enough). One eyed and tone deaf.
Frank Probst @ 54
Honestly, I think most “centrists” are captive of the misapprehension that the “center” is about halfway between the liberals and the conservatives, no matter how far to the right the conservatives move. Unfortunately for them, this is false (as is ably demonstrated in this great American Prospect article) which is why they keep losing. If that were true, then their strategy of appealing to that halfway point to capture both moderates and liberals might be a good one.
The other flaw seems to be one that is all too common; the inability to see that their whole strategy is wrong, always deciding that the reason it failed was because we didn’t do enough of it. (Kinda like neocon foreign policy…)
War correspondent (hehe), Tucker Carlson is ripping Bush a new. “Bush is an idiot for saying democracy means peace.”

“Mary for now” works for me.
“Mary” is such a fine commenter that they asked her to post and so far she has done one, but we all hope there are more in our future. IMO, those of us who have been here awhile have no trouble distinguishing between “Mary” and “Mary for now.”
Others may have a different perspective.
If Tucker starts picking on Bush, it will be hard to know what to do. Give them each one of those great big nerf bats?
Just got in and saw the new poll and now my head hurts.

My brother had a blind horse. Totally blind, even after the amazing ‘horse pills’ that we gave her. We’ve had dropoff goats, cats, and dogs, but this was a droppff horse. All were cared for in the best possible way and lived and died here. A blest place. They do seem to adjust, amazingly.
BarbB 144 – I didn’t see it! WooT!
I did see where Reid threatened to not confirm Bradbury’s Assist AG slot and where Specter caved to the force of darkness yet again and did a quickie hearing on Keisler last week, without any real notice to the Dems. On the same day, btw, that he filed his “what the Sup Ct really meant with Hamdan is that all the current habeas cases should be dismissed” brief and just a few days after his “I’ll bury the case if you try to convict *my* lawbreaking clients – you State of Maine you” letter.

The problem for all these guys is that they imagine that Lieberman would take second billing again on a national ticket. You watch, in 2008, he’ll be the darling of those UNITY08 dopes, and at the TOP of their ticket, not #2.

Absolutely not.
Mary is a very common four letter name. Once readers see two more SEPARATE words after any common four letter name, John for example, it’s immediately clear it’s a different commenter.
Obviously, others with more experience on blogs than I, may have a different opinion.
Prior to Mary, we had a Marysz. When Mary started, no one had trouble telling them apart and imo Marysz is visually closer to Mary than Mary for now.
Sadly, I haven’t seen a comment from Marysz for a while.
Is Lieberman almost gloating?

TeddySanFran @ 159
An Orthodox Jew on the Republican ticket? I doubt it. It’s just staight WASPy men for the Republicans. Their last serious candidate who broke this rule was Elizabeth Dole, who had a fairly rude awaking when almost no one supported her candidacy.
Jenny: yes’m, I live in Volusia County, Florida.
marksb: Your wonderful description accords with the poems Leon wrote about Alaska when I knew him in grad school at the U. of Arkansas in the mid-70s. I’ve promised to copy one here for Ed*ward T sometime, and now it’ll be for you too.
“Fanciful” is not the first word that would have come to mind. OTOH, for those who so successfuly speculated on a 6 week war in Iraq, I guess its time for them to step up and claim fanatasy as the noun base from which they derive their adjectives.
My first-ever post here… I’m on MyDD under this name and on Kos as “Buzzer”. I was in Connecticut Friday through Sunday, but had to head back home to Maryland today.
Anyway, with that intro out of the way, I just wanted to jot down some random thoughts:
1. From canvassing in Middletown the last couple of days, Saturday in an ethnically mixed working-class neighborhood and Sunday in an affluent suburban one, I found that support of Lamont was solid in both places, but it took a different shape. The working-class neighborhood had virtually no Lieberman support, and everyone was at least curious about Ned, and often supportive, but not particularly gung-ho. The affluent neighborhood had a more even Lamont-Lieberman split, but the Ned support was quite a bit more intense. I guess I’d say that (a) disillusionment with Joe cuts across all social strata, but (b) a willingness to switch to Lamont seems to increase with education and income.
2. I am not particularly optimistic about tomorrow. Joe’s gotten a ton of free media the last couple of days, and Lamont, in what I’d say is the first real misstep of his campaign (if my impressions are true), hasn’t engaged in a high-visibility rebuttal to Joe’s Sunday Big Ball of Lies Speech. I’m afraid many voters, characteristically unwilling to change (hence the traditional power of incumbents), might wimp out on Lamont when they hit the voting booth tomorrow and go with the “safe” choice for six more years of being screwed, simply by telling themselves “well, Lieberman’s not THAT bad.” I hope we remember that voter inertia is the default setting when the returns roll in tomorrow night, that we’re up against a massive and multidimensional machine, and that this race wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near competitive to begin with. I hope I’m completely off-base about that, but I just don’t have a great feeling, and it has NOTHING to do with today’s poll. It’s just my gut. I hope I’m wrong.
3. This election is about media spin as much as anything. We need to hammer home the point that just getting a primary challenge to an eighteen-year incumbent down to the wire is a HUGE breakthrough for the grassroots (which includes the netroots but is in no way limited to it). Joe will gloat very loudly if he wins, and his media minions will duly follow suit and rub our noses in the dirt. We need to keep our perspective. I know we’re all tired of moral victories, but we need to be mentally and strategically prepared for another one just in case. Reality bites.
I hope I didn’t come across as too pessimistic. My experience canvassing and phonebanking for Lamont was immensely enriching and rewarding, and I would have stuck around through the election if not for local obligations. I fervently hope Ned can pull it off. But Goliath beats David nine times out of ten, and we’re not Goliath here.

I believe some people have said they are collecting your posts, but don’t worry. I said bibliography, not hagiography. :>) How about TheOriginalMary or Mary, Esq.? And don’t be too quick to discard MaryBeth. Mary Beth Norton is a wonderful historian. I assure you that if you go with MaryBeth, I will associate you with witches, not pom poms. Finifinito – Re; cats – I have known cats to find one last bit of energy to spirit themselves out of the house in order to find a nice place to lay down and pass on to whatever realm comes next. It’s an instinctual imperative. Well, in addition to being an orthodox Jew, Joe has a lot of other problems with that crowd including the fact that he has been pro-choice for a very long time (his short walk to the nearest hospital would not cut it with that bunch), etc., etc.
Kristol is so exited about the coming of WWIII that it is all he can think about.

Hi Cozumel!
Master Jack – thanks for your report. You don’t sound pessimistic, you sound like someone who has done a lot crammed into a short time and who is very committed and serious about this campaign.
After so many squeakers, everyone is braced for the worst – but there is no “worst” here, really. It is absolutely AMAZING that this race has gone this far. ANd Joe has had to show his true Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter, side. When DLC thinks that is the “moderate center” they have lost their minds.

Okay, ET and marksb. I’ll start typing Leon’s poem right here, right now. I’m slow, so it’s bound to be an EPU by the time I finish/proofread, but this thread is where you’ll find it ASAP.
CNN brought up Jane and “the graphic” again but overall not a horrible story about bloogers and Lamont…
“An Orthodox Jew on the Republican ticket? I doubt it.” Perhaps I’m naive about this, but aren’t the WASP right-wing (Republican) fundamentalists and Orthodox Jews pretty symbiotic with each other? Seems all the evangelicals support the Israeli government’s actions on most everything, from Gaza to Lebanon. And whatever.

I don’t think this is a fraud – they had a major leak (267,000 gallons) off part of the pipeline a few months ago, I think that is what prompted this latest round of inspections. I agree that this was a good thing to find before a large leak could do some major enviornmental damage. I did some work related to the Exxon Valdez spill, and believe me, we don’t want a repeat of that!
Master Jack, per everyone else, thanks for the report.
CNN carried oh-so-briefly about Bob Ney giving it up. Congressman Ney was “The Mayor of Capitol Hill” — his committee was in charge of all physical facilities and staff for the House of Representatives. Damn important job and the dude in charge is about ready to be indicted for bribery charges related to telephone equipment for Vapitol Hill. 10 seconds on CNN.
there is only one Jewish Republican in Congress – Cantor of VA. That’s one more than the number of Black GOP congresscritters…

Mary Beth Norton from Cornell?
I have a distant relative (my Grandpa’s distant cousin) who graduated from the school of architecture at Cornell in 1925.
She was a feminist before it was popular.
Now, back to your regularly scheduled Ned news.

Sorry, did not mean to be unclear, but I wasn’t writing about the GOP, which I think would be no-Joe for all the reasons cited since my comment. I was referring to these bozos http://www.unity08.com/ who I think would feed RGJoe’s ego, Senator or ex-, and let him preen himself to the top of their ticket. And I agree with y’all, no way Joey Pro-Choice But Short Ride would be on any GOP national ticket shortlist.
And, thank goddess for the disappointment that is Liddy Dole, who’ll cause the RNC, not the without-cash RSCC, to have to defend GOP Senators and help challengers this fall. She’s been a signal disappointment to her party. But not mine!!
welcome Master Jack Buzzer, don’t be a stranger, and thanks for your ground report.

Loved the Purina nuggets story. I have not laughed like this in days. Thanks!
Karen — I was at the Meriden office. We fanned out to Middletown from there. I also did a bit of Meriden itself, and that went pretty well too. Lamont has enough support to win — I’m just afraid of premature buyer’s remorse and a “go with the devil you know” mentality. I can’t imagine how much WORSE Lieberman can be, but voters are weird.

Let me put it this way…
Most hardcore far-right Protestants view that whole part about Jesus being “King of the Jews” as an unfortunate technicality. Most WASPS that I’ve run across view Jews in the same light as any other ethnicity that isn’t their own. Not well. Their allegiance with Israel is a hypocritcal one at best. They know the bible refers to it as the holy land, and the place where Jesus will return too, but most of them would prefer to get the Jews out first.
(Of course, this isn’t all Protestants, but it does sum up the same views as most of your Ann Coulter type protestants.)

Sigh indeed. As to the good news on Haynes (and Boyle and some other even-crappier-than-usual nominees), the dateline on the Alliance for Justice blog is Friday, but I don’t visit it regularly, and their emailed announcement just came in. Mary for now: What’s in a name? Yours has always been special, as has been your writing and insight. My Marily, which I was always uncomfortable with, changed today. Never having been among alot of Marys, I didn’t think that adding my initials to my name would be upsetting. I apologize. This is not a big deal for me; I accede to your call on this matter. I have dial-up, a smattering of computer parts, all donated, and am not really that good with all of them and what they can do. You are much better prepared than I to forefend the interests of this very special, enlightened, and creative group; please tell me what is the best thing to do.

“there is only one Jewish Republican in Congress…” True. But what then is the explanation for the seemingly strong bond between Christian fundamentalist preachers, their followers, and the Republican party in general and the Israeli government? Most of the Republicans in my very red state and letters to the editor, to our largest newspaper (a decidedly Republican paper) and the editorials support Israeli actions in dealing with Palestinians and the Lebanon mess. No if’s and’s or but’s. Is it that the Israeli’s are being suckered by the “fundies” and the Repubs?
*ilson46201, those are some powerful keys you got going today!

Bad Zergle…bad.
Jews and Israel are not synonymous. The GOP loves Israel now but obviously wont elect American Jews.
You’ve got to understand the whole 2nd coming of Christ thing to understand the relationship. Israel is loved because that’s where Jesus is supposed to return to. One of the signs of his coming is “when all nations turn against Israel”. Then he will swoop down and save the day…etc.etc.etc… It’s a long story. Just know they love the state of Israel but not so much the people.
Fresh thread!
TeddySanFran @ 218
‘
Not if it’s going to upset our brilliant Mary! Thank you, *ilson, that was kind, indeed.
“The GOP loves Israel now, but obviously won’t elect American Jews.” That seems to beg the question and offer a possible answer. Why won’t the GOP elect American Jews? Possible answer: The GOP is anti-Semitic?
Oklahoma Kiddo @215, I think it’s the Left Behind stuff that makes them want to support Israel.
John Hagee is a big supporter of Israel, because (his words) “God will bless those who bless the Jewish people.” Jerusalem Post
Oklahoma kiddo @ 214
I think the Israeli right wing (they’re the ones who benefit from the fundamentalists, not Israelis in general) probably thinks they’re suckering the fundamentalists, not the other way around. They get unwavering support from a significant chunk of the American electorate, and the only price they pay is a possible supernatural event (the Apocalypse) at some point in the future.
American Jews arent all that GOP as a group … Bush got only 25% of the Jewish vote . I believe that’s an all-time high for any GOP Presidential candidate.
maryhcr @ 214
maryhcr/marily — The Original Mary changed her name yesterday, so your choice today didn’t have anything to do with it. Another “Mary,” no initials, showed up, so T.O.M. became Mary now and again or something like that. Maybe she should call herself The Once and Future Mary. Anyway, we’ve gotten to know you as Marily, but if you would rather be Maryhcr, we’ll adapt.
As promised to Ed*ward Teller, marksb, and any other lovers of Alaska.

Margot…2:21pm
That eschatology that Hagee and the rest spout, does not help matters (world peace) at all. Speaking for myself only. What you are saying about the left is quite interesting.
“American Jews aren’t all that GOP…” Granted. But the question that remains is perhaps: who benefits and for what reasons from the extremely close relationship between the American government and the Israeli government? For that matter, is there really a concise answer? One thing that does seem clear, if the U.S. is relying on Israel to help maintain stability in the region, in exchange for American funding and weaponry, then something is amiss.
yeah, Lotus, and Leon, that’s it. There’s nothing that can compare to the artic. The closer you get to the top, the more incomparable it gets, the more wild, the more vivid, the more close to the edge, like another planet; and all the time, death is *right there*. Magic. Thanks.
maryhcr @ 211
Marily – I’ve just been joking, sorry! There have been a lot of Mary-s that have posted over time and they all do just what I did, use “Mary” I don’t think I was the first Mary even, just the talkiest.
I kind of like “Mary for now” – it leaves my options open. *g*
Glad you enjoyed that, marksb.
Now I wish you’d been there in Fayetteville, AR, on the night in 1976 when Leon gave a reading from his then brand-new book Often in Different Landscapes. Several fine Alaska poems in it, but this one’s my favorite (his too, he said). I still experience it as I heard him say it — extra good, that.
Peterr @ 71
YES. Any and all precautions and repairs need to be taken and undertaken.
Marksb–thanks for your on the spot experiences. IMO the pipeline workers (I know folks from here in eastern Maine who work there seasonally) are a dedicated and careful group, working to the best of their abilities with the materials provided and conditions as they are.
So not criticism of the workers was implied in my comment about the timing of the announcement of the leaks and shut down.
Hey, OS, how’s your day been?
Lotus, well, recently I laughed about the kibble story. Dealt with tenants who did not understand about a slow vs a fast heating coil in the water heater, and the plumber ($55/hr) who told me about the water heater after I made several trips from home to the apartment building after going to the airport and grocery shopping. Paid bills, and surveyed the 4 of 7 cords of firewood that arrived today!! Heck of a lot of stacking work but DH likes to do it. Prepared a bed to transplant lettuce and basil seedlings into, made some Lamont calls, and now am contemplating dinner while I imbibe in a Corona!! May try to make some more Lamont calls after dinner if it’s not too late or will book some for tomorrow.
LOL, Howzit by you?
Agreed with OS and Peterr; the workers on the line over the last 30 years (I’ve known a few, mostly in the early days) are very dedicated. The system was set up much more like a military outfit than a classic make-a-mess-and-leave oilfield. The whole condition of the permit process was to monitor the line closely and minimize all contamination.
What I’ve read is a lot of little leaks, a lot of issues coming on (welds and corrosion), and those damn supports sagging from melting permafrost.
What I worked on was the buried sections of pipe and I have no idea how that is fairing. It’s not readily evident, though a system was in place to “see” any breach even if under the ground or under the creeks, and they now have inspection camera systems as well. I’m guessing that they’ve hit a limit to controlling the damage with bandaids and have to do some serious (re)construction.
lotus,
I’ve been out doing chores after two weeks of travel. Leon’s poem is really interesting. Very much pipeline boom poetry. I’m saving it.
ET, not sure how much musicality it lends itself to, but I love that howl of the last line.
I nominate “Mary. Yes, that one.”
