Many of you know we are close to completion of our Roots Project beta site. This Drupal site will provide a social networking and organizing infrastructure for progressives all over the country. Whether people want to create groups based on their local communities, based on issues of interest or even based on lifestyle interests and hobbies, our site will provide the infrastructure for common people to gather together for the common good. The site will be a place to create tools and best practices designed by locals for others to copy and adapt to their own circumstances all across the country. The focus of the site is to connect people, making the distinction between the grassroots and the netroots ultimately obsolete.
To get the site from its current 0.8 state to 1.0 during the next month, we need additional site development help. Lambert from Correntewire, our highly talented and experienced lead developer, sent me the following information about who and what we need. Please email me at pachacutec01 at gmail dot com if you think you can help. Let me know what your programming experience has been and please provide me any references you may have that give me confidence you share our progressive values. Those interested in helping complete what will be, I think, an historic project must be available for focused work right away, during this month of August. Thanks!
Here’s what we need:
I took the task list and put hours against the tasks, creating a SWAG. Of course, the total number of people required depends on the number of hours they can put in, as well as how good they are. So, I could be overestimating, because I don’t do JavaScript, for example. But with things being dynamic, and needing to test… I’d be happy to find that out.
With those caveats, this is the blurb:
1 (one) information architect — this is the person to structure the front page and the registration form. Methods differ; the deliverable could be scenarios, and/or a site map, and/or finished pages working with one of the developers. (Ajax is probably not a solution, unless its very easy to maintain.)
2 (two) LAMP coders who know PHP, Drupal experience preferred. Not hackers. Need to accept high coding standards in Drupal — everything commented, code formatted, etc. Need to have attitude of building a community around the code, as well. No module creation is needed, but many small changes to existing modules, many of which might become Drupal patches to give back to the community.
1 (one) TinyMCE geek or Ajax/PHP expert to create "one-click" solution for media plugins to TinyMCE under Drupal. [Note that the task on this one points to an existing plugin, in PHP, that could possibly be ported to Drupal.]
2 (two) testers to completely exercise the existing site and all new development.
We need to get started right away, so please send me your email and qualifications if you are interested and available. This is the last push and the specs have all been defined. We’ve worked hard on the planning end to define the project well for the programmers, and we want to have the site development complete by our target date of August 25. That will allow us to prepare for a splashy public launch and rollout right after that.
Thanks to everyone for helping us recruit the talent we need for this last push!

R O O T Z !!!
Aaak – back at work after a great weekend in CT.
Pach,
I’m way behind the curve (old-school control systems programmer), but I would be happy to try and help with testing. I’ve got Linux, PC, and Mac systems at home which can help find JavaScript bugs, etc.
peace,
jim
Is it just me, or is anyone else enjoying the irony? The man who finally brought down Bob Ney seems to be John McCain. Maybe he can borrow Scooter’s memory expert.
jim preston @ 4
Please send me an email at pachacutec01 at gmail dot com so I can get you in with the responses. Thanks!!!!!
Please note: I just fixed a typo in my email address listed in the main post.
I hate Mondays. . .
I spent all day Sunday working for the Lamont campaign in Bridgeport. The office in Bridgeport has an extremely dedicated staff, but they need MANY MORE VOLUNTEERS!
I do not have the liberty of calling in sick today or tomorrow, but I pray that some of you reading this can make the time to get over there. You will LOVE it! It feels so great to help with such an important cause.
In my one day in Bridgeport, I spoke with dozens of undecided voters, some of whom seemed convinced to vote for Lamont by the literature that I gave them and our discussions about the differences between Lieberman and Lamont.
In many cases, what matters most in how undecideds vote is who they talked to most recently.
Again, I implore everyone at FDL who can get to Connecticut to please go – knock on doors and make the closing argument for Lamont face to face with the voters of Connecticut! Lieberman’s paid people are out in force and we need to match them.
Thanks and godspeed.
xyz,
There are so many volunteers at other offices – I’m wondering if they could “spread the wealth” and move resources up to Bridgeport.
There were many, many volunteers in Norwalk yesterday. Bridgeport is only about 20 to 30 minutes away
DAB,
I’m sure that the staffs of the various Lamont offices are working together to allocate personnell appropriately among them.
My main point is that there are tons of Lieberman folks out there and we need to balance them ACROSS CONNECTICUT. Bridgeport is just ONE EXAMPLE of an office that could use many more volunteers to knock on doors and make calls in the limited remaining time.
Any FDL’er that goes to ANY Lamont office in the state will find that there is a TREMENDOUS amount of work to be done and a serious need for more bodies.
Door knocking takes a vast collective effort and Lieberman’s people are out in force. We need to match them and hopefully beat them across the state.
Thanks to all and please consider getting over to Connecticut if at all possible. This is the final push.
xyz,
Just called the Bridgeport office and will be there this afternoon to help out with some “door knocking.”
The Lamont office has developed a great fact sheet comparing the two candidates on key issues. It would be great to post a pdf of the fact sheet (or even to write about some of the contrasting positions other than Iraq). I know Lieberman’s been on the wrong side of a lot of issues, but when I read through the sheet I found out things about Loserman’s record that made my hair stand on end.
Oscar’s got a great post about the Lieberman/Lamont race and how the MSM completely misses the point here.
Thanks so much, DAB!!!
You will enjoy your time in Bridgeport. I found one house with 9 strong Lamont supporters in it! What a joy!
And the undecideds are definitely interested in hearing more about Lamont. You may convince a lot of people.
Remember to have lawn signs with you in your car when you go door-knocking. Strong Lamont supporters LOVE to get lawn signs. And their undecided neighbors definitely take note of the signs.
Good luck, and thanks again!

[CHS notes: Edited this last bit. It crossed a line with me. You have a question on this, e-mail me.]
Quick question: Are you looking for black box or white box testers?
wd74 – go wash your mouth out with soap and come back when you can behave like an adult.
veruca @ 15
That’s a question beyond my expertise. I know we have a “sandbox” set up for the next generation of site development work, and that’s where the next round of testing and development will take place. It’s a mirror of the current site on the same host server explicitly for the purposes of next phase development.
Uh oh. Looks like wd74 is well on his/her way to being banned from the site.

I don’t know anyone who would deny Israel’s right to exist; the right to bomb apartment blocks full of Lebanese civilians, not so much . . .
from Newsweek:
Apart from the wars in Iraq and Lebanon, what’s on President Bush’s mind as he takes a
shortened vacation at his Texas ranch? Judging by the books on his summer-reading list, Bush is
thinking about nuclear bombs, civil war and baseball. {snip]
The president has..read “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, a biography of
Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atom bomb who later became a pacifist and a victim of the anti-communist witch hunt. [snip]
And his favorite line had to be the one uttered by Oppenheimer after watching the first nuclear weapon test:

Playin’ in the sandbox beats playing in the gutter every day of the week!
(These tech geeks and their perks. First it was foosball in the break room, and now sandboxes!)
This is kind of a weird coincidence — I’ve been teaching myself Drupal, and along with that, PHP, and I read your post just after starting to customize a theme for my site. Nothing fancy, just a change of colors and addition of meta keywords, but considering I didn’t even have MySQL working on the site three weeks ago, I think I’m coming along nicely.
So, I get the colors to display (after discovering which cache to ditch,) reload all tabs on my browser, and over in this tab, your message.
I have two decades experience in coding in a world-class shop where I earned a rep for meticulous documentation, but I’m just a Drupal/PHP beginner. Five months down the line, I might be jumping up and shouting I’M YOUR MAN! But currently, it’s the learning curve. (aka: The FUN part!)
Phew. I can see it’s going to be a very long, tough day. Wish our mods all the cool refreshing drinks they need, caffienation as desired and plenty of power on demand as their index fingers hit DELETE.
Just finishing weeding, need to get cleaned up and get ready to GOTV lit drop. Here’s my plea, yet again, to all of you FirePups who aren’t able to be in CT over the next several days: remember that there are races in your own backyards and across the rest of the country and tomorrow may be the primary for you as well as in CT. We all of us have elections to be won in November, no matter what happens tomorrow in CT.
Here’s your marching orders:
– Go to 100actions.com and get today’s Action you can do; catch up and do actions 94-100 (we’re now 92 days away from the election!). These are things that are simple and easy, eating-an-elephant-one-bite-at-a-time steps.
– Go to DFALink.com and find the closest DFA group to you, find out how you can plug into their organization and take local action.
– Go to Meetup.com and find the closest progressive events near you; make a point of encouraging those folks to take 100Actions.com, too.
– Be sure to follow Do More Than Vote (DMTV) as it begins to roll out more sites across the country; hey, maybe you can roll one out, too!
– Check the Moveon.org site for any CT phonebanking efforts today and tomorrow.
– And join the StateRootsProject.org along with the rest of us FirePups who are already there; get a login, start adding content and events you find at DFALink and Meetup.
Even if you’re not a programmer, we still need you there. Handbooks for a number of states have been started, but need more input. You’re a valuable resource and can help with that effort, if not with other content.
And now off to GOTV!!!
(PS: I know I have to work on the REST of the color scheme.)
just john 8:47 pm — hey, you may not have a lot experience in Drupal/PHP, but with your background you sure sound like you know how to break something as a “white hat”. Why don’t you sign up to be a tester? You might also help with documentation, would be a two-fer, learning while documenting. A lot of coders I know are for crap on documentation; you’d bring a wealth of skills in this area.
And no, I’m not a coder — I’m breaking things, though, at the Roots Project. Call me an unofficial tester…
Troll made me so mad, I’m vaccuming the entire house now. Good way to let off steam.
Later, all.

CT polls are traditionally open 6a – 8p
Keep an eye on http://www.nbc30.com — they have been promising live interviews with the candidates between 5 and 6pm. (Although, with the weather hysteria around here and prediction for severe thunderstorms PM rush — all bets are off).
I have gotten 5 ROBO calls already, and it’s just noon. 2 for governor, the Clinton for Lieberman again (4th time since Clinton was here), AFT for Ned, and local pol for Lieberman. I’ve had it! Imagine the breath of fresh air getting a live call from the Lamont campaign.
Weather tomorrow — supposed to be picture-perfect.
Q-poll. It means GOTV in CT!!!
The gap is closing, and it’s all about combinations of lower incomes, moderate identification, and possession of ovaries. It is very scary, as the swath this cuts seems to resemble the folks who put Bush as far he’s come.
Maybe this is just a correction in polling, or a bounce due to all the newspaper endorsements.
From Larkspur at http://www.myleftnutmeg.com/sh…..aryId=2586
“I also attribute Lieberman’s rise in the latest poll to the fact that all CT papers endorsed him since the last poll was taken, so he got instant media attention and the papers regurgitated Lieberman’s talking points. These endorsements most likely affected undecideds and those not paying much attention to the race.”
Possibly Significant News Regarding Lieberman (from ConnecticutBlog):
What is Joe up to now?
Team Joementum is up to something.
There are reports of something happening at the Lieberman office in Stamford and it involves the Secret Police and an inportant official from D.C.
I’ll have more info soon. If anyone reading this is in Stamford right now, get down to Lieberman’s office with a camera, take some photographs (and/or video) and get in touch with me.

cbl-fyi; message from Angie at the end of the last thread.
I’m actually disappointed to see people like Max Cleland campaign for Lieberman (and now maybe Clinton coming back), considering the disgusting actions Lieberman has taken in his desperate bid to hang onto power.
It started with Lieberman’s approval of an ad using fake Lamont bumper stickers, on to race-baiting flyers on cars in church parking lots, followed by importing lobbyists to shout down Lamont and supporters, ending with hiring college republicans to tear down Lamont signs.
It’s just unbecoming of our party, and our luminaries should not be involved with such a snake. If a candidate can’t win honestly he or she has no business representing the people.
Lieberman’s War

I would like reporters to ask Condaliesalot, Donald And Dick and Georgie and Lieberdunce if they would put their money where their mouths are. If Iraq beomes a democracy within a year they were right. If not, they put their personal wealth on the line and forfeit it. If they win, the Federal Government will match it. Lets have Vegas give a betting line. What are the odds that these fools are right? I would like to bet on their correctness. Every statement these neo con fools utter, would have made me a fortune in Vegas if I could have bet against their assertions. “The oil revenues will pay for the war”…I would have bet the house on that lie. Democracy is on the march. I would have bet my savings on that foolish remark. Yea, let’s let the markets set the bar. Let us bet our money for or against the remarks these Bush fools make. Progressives could fund every campaign in the future. There is nothing like a winner and a loser. Money talks. Let the betting begin.
Be good to see Bush, Rummy, Cheney, Rice et al in total poverty…or have to tell the truth
dru – thanks muchas for the Angie heads up !

Question of the Day: Would Joe do what A.Bag and FLA Goopers do for votes?
Don’t believe it? Arianna has photographic proof. (But you owe it to yourself to read the whole piece.)
New thread. :)
-ck- @ 60
But JOE’s not using the war for partisan political purposes, is he? If I were Max Cleland, I would have cringed down to my core at having my name invoked by this man.
I said this last night, and I will say it again. The time for Joe Lieberman to do something about that “heavy responsibility” he feels about Iraq was months ago, when Jack Murtha was getting savaged for speaking out about what needed to be done. His support, at that time, might have made a difference, but for it to come now is just pandering at its worst.
If I were Ned Lamont, or a member of his campaign team, I would be out talking about this very real choice. Do they want someone who stands back and waits to see what the prevailing wisdom is before taking a stand? Do they want someone whose talk is about principles, but whose actions are about protecting his own rear? Do they want someone who understands that working with the other party does not mean just giving in, but fighting and fighting hard?
I think there’s a reason Joe has stayed away from CT for so long – the more you see of him, the less you like him.
puppethead @ 58
I know – it’s just infuriating. I am sooooo disappointed in Cleland – particularly because Lieberman sat on his hands and gave Kerry zero support during the Presidential campaign.
I’ve said before – if the Dem establishment accomplishes what they’ve set out to accomplish in CT, I, for one, will never give another dime to the party. Clinton, et al just don’t get it – they are about to reap the whirlwind
Off to a doctor’s appointment and then Bridgport. Fingers crossed about tomorrow.
Rayne @
34
Okay, I’ve emailed Pachacutec.
Anne @ 9:46 am (#67) – You’re right, even if he disagreed with Murtha, Lieberman could have spoken up on his behalf. If he was really concerned about bipartisanship and civility in public discourse, it’s reasonable to expect that he would have. I don’t recall hearing anything.
I dunno yet another PHPNuke clone. I ended up writing my own stuff to handle various things as the thing was invariably broke. You can follow the bundle method, as we have in innumerable CMS schemes but it just drives me nuts.
I’d rather just wing it. But then I am an undisciplined hippie from the 60s ;), just making it up as I go along.

Pach,
Longtime reader, firsttime poster. Just wanted to clear up the whitebox/blackbox testing issue. I’m a longtime tester/QA dude for MS and Amazon, if you need credentials (sadly, I’m slammed right now, otherwise I’d volunteer.)
Blackbox: you can’t see what’s inside. In other words, your testing is strictly based on “if I do this, that other thing should happen”. That is, it’s entirely (and somewhat blindly) based on the spec.
Whitebox: you can see what’s inside (okay, white is usually opaque, but you get the idea.) That is, you review the code with the developer as well as the PM, figure out the various states the various functions etc. can be in, and what possible states are, and test based on that.
HTH. Best of luck.
LOL, I offered 2 months ago my Linux, Apache, Mysql, PHP assistance to all three of your email addresses, no response back….now too busy with the next launch of Mambo CMS, hope it all works out!! If you need help tweaking code in the future I’ll sure be happy to contrib :)

any reason in particular you’re planning to work in drupal instead of wordpress? I’m not advocating, just asking. I’d never heard of drupal until you mentioned it in this post.
I’ve been developing a collaborative film editing system on top of Drupal, and I could probably offer some insights from my year of Drupal hacking. You can check out a presentation that I gave at Vloggercon here.
The Echo Chamber Project is looking at how the mainstream media became an echo chamber to the countdown to war in Iraq.

Kent Bye @

You might start by telling us how to prevent pornspammers from defacing pages in the way they did to the one you just linked to.
(Followup to #78.) Okay, that’s gone now. Fast work!
Re: Spam.
There is an Akismet Drupal module that I have heard a lot of great things about for fighting SPAM.
http://www.phpmix.org/projects/drupal/4_7/akismet
http://drupal.org/node/68535
I haven’t installed this on Echo Chamber Project yet because I still need to upgrade from Drupal HEAD to 4.7. Yet I have been developing on 4.7 on my sandbox site for a few months.
(The whole comment spam thing is why I’m angling toward building myself a Drupal site with Haloscan commenting. I have this wacky notion of creating a forum where only site members (invited specifically by me) can post, but the whole world can comment on forum posts via Haloscan. That way, Haloscan would have to deal with the major headaches.
Obviously, this is not the model an online open-to-all community would want to use.)
I don’t think you need to go as far as Haloscan mixed with Drupal to fight spam.
I installed the Akismet wordpress plug-in on my personal vlog site after a string of spam attacks, and no spam has come through since then.
Drupal developers Earl Miles & D’Arcy Norman also have very kind words about Akismet.
There is also a CAPTCHA module as well if you want to go that route.
Kent Bye — Another reason I’m considering Haloscan is in the case of unexpected popularity, Haloscan.com would handle the brunt of the commenting traffic.
But yes, I’ve seen those modules, thanks, and for somebody doing a SANE* site, they sound quite good.
* As opposed to deliberately perverse. I’ve been doing interfaces for decades, as well as doing online roleplaying games for years, so you can imagine what twisted notions I’ve come up with. F’rinstance, the first thing I thought of when first encountering PHP-Nuke was a game where the players would play by building a fictitious company’s site, but the site would actually be online and real people could look at it and (hopefully) think it was “real.” In other words, it would have a mission almost exactly the opposite of what a community activist site would require.
(Still no reply to my email to that address in the post.)
