I know people were a bit freaked out by the new Q-Poll this morning that only showed Lamont 6 points ahead of Lieberman but I agree with Kos – since most of the internal polling showed the race much closer, the Q-Poll giving Lamont a 13 point lead was probably an outlier.
Still, it is all going to come down to GOTV. It is going to be a battle in the field like no other. Whoever gets their people to the polls will win. You can phone bank (through MoveOn ), you can contact one of the Lamont field offices to volunteer or you can just show up and they will put you to work. You’re going to want to say that you had a hand in the outcome of this race. More info here . We’ll probably do some kind of compliation of people’s stories and photos about volunteering after this is all over, and you can’t contribute it you didn’t take part now can you.
Joe has obscene gobs of money he is throwing out on the street, but the Lamont people got an earlier start. Their GOTV effort is being run by experienced Connecticut locals, unlike the Lieberman effort being run by the DC consultants. Let’s hope the consultants deliver the reliably inept service they have for the past decade. Steve Gilliard seems to think it is so:
Lieberman is a typical boomer, he wants to ossify the past as some kind of character testimonial, but he doesn’t want to deal with the present in any sort of intelligent way. When questioned on his go along, get along attitude, he talks in vague terms about the good he’s done. He never apologized for not grilling Michael Brown on his qualifications. Like people would forget that.
But most telling about the Lieberman campaign among the negroes is that it is vastly out of date and heavy handed. He hired kids, he hired outside field workers, he didn’t pay back the loyal Democratic workers who saved his ass over and over. When he humiliated that New Haven alderman without a second thought, I knew his campaign was full of shit.
Now, supposedly a political neophyte, Lamont reached out to people who had a clue. Alexis McGill is one of those people you don’t hear about in DC, but is one of the people who can win elections for you. She reaches black voters and doesn’t do it by handing out money. She goes to the clubs, the barber shops, the social centers of black life beyond the church, and hired local persuaders for her street teams
If you get someone who can walk into a couple of barber shops, talk to the people and get listened to, that’s better than buying some minister. They put on a nice show, but people don’t get their political advice from them. This isn’t 1964. McGill, who ran Vote or Die, knows how to communicate in the visual language of younger voters. She also knows how to reach their parents.
Lieberman got more people, but I think Lamont got the persuaders. The community leaders who can make a pitch and get heard.
There will be many stories written about the outcome of this race and how it was run on both sides, but I don’t think a lot of people realize that this is Centralized DC Power vs. 50 State Strategy in action. Watching how this all plays out should be very interesting on a lot of levels.
Meanwhile, over at the DNC Tracy Jean is counting down the days until the November election in her "100 Actions in 100 days" column. Please take a minute to bookmark it and check it daily, and yes, take action.

Welcome back, Jane, and thanks for this report. You are, you well know, doing the angels’ work. Those of us who wish we could be with you are doing what we can from here, and feeling like Santa can’t come fast enough.

Great title Jane!
My guess now is that it’s all about execution and resource allocation, making good decisions.
Now you have some feel for how Dwight Eisenhower felt on 5 June 1944. Of course with your background, waiting for the first box office numbers to come in, you’re probably already intimately familiar with it.
I saw the crawler during tweety’s show say”
Liebrmans spokesperson said that if Joe loses the primary he will reflect on whether he will continue an independent run…HMMMMMmmm
what does that mean?….Does he think he is going to win.
John — a better analogy is June 4th since the 5th was the planned D-Day but bad storms forced a one-day postponement …
The CT polls close at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. Does anyone know much about the reporting process from all the various towns? When will we have a fairly clear picture of the results?
Will there be exit polls?

The new polls make it even scarier, but considering CT and the rest of the country have been getting PEPPERED like a Dick Cheney hunting partner with nothing but, “If the Dems elect Lamont it will bring disaster to The Party” from the TV pundits 24-7, that Lamont has any lead in the polls at all is a miracle.
I’m just fantasizing, like everyone else, that tomorrow’s not even close, and we blow Holy Joe the hell out of the water.

Please keep one thing in mind — this race is NOT a level playing field, by any means. The media coverage of this race has made it sound like it is, but Joe Lieberman enjoys the enormous built-in advantages of incumbency and name recognition, and now basically the entire American power structure has circled its wagons around the Senator, marshalling resources in a manner not seen since the Normandy invasion.
Meanwhile, Ned’s got the grassroots, the netroots, the CT town committees, a couple of unions, and the NYT. That’s all, folks.
That this race is even CLOSE is an immense breakthrough for people-powered politics. And I know we’re all sick of moral victories and we crave a real one, but this has become a basketball game between Liechtenstein and the United States. And we’re Liechtenstein.
We need to keep that in mind. This is NOT a level playing field, and we still have a chance to pull this off, 24 hours before gametime.
Lieberman wimped out on Tweety … he’s a noshow — that’s what he did to Connecticut for 18 years…
LieberLOSER cancelled tweety…HMmmmmmmmmm

It’s 5:30 PM eastern, there are exactly THREE hours left to make calls and actually find someone at home.
Please make calls for the next few hours – lots of people seem undecided and the calls are being well received.
Go Ned!!

If Joe believes in the war in Iraq he should demand that his children enlist. If not, everyone should come home. If he supports evangelicals and the interference with purely personal decisions he should join the rapture (either he converts or jumps into the lake of fire). Do you believe that you and your children are better than anyone else’s or are you a self-hater?

bk,
He probably pulls some support (maybe a lot of support) from that crowd. His stance on abortion rights probably gives some of them pause, and his Orthodox Judiasm also probably gives them some pause.
Those folks are really conflicted about Israel and Jews generally. The Revelation of St John says that Israel must be restored, and the temple rebuilt before Jeeeeeesus can return. So, clearly (to them anyway), they need to support Israel against its enemies, and do what they can to move the Greater Israel agenda forward.
But at the same time, there’s a vein of antisemitism that runs deep in these people. I’ve seen some take delight in the idea that all Jews except those who accept their version of Jeeeeesus will be ‘cast into the pit of fire.’ (In fairness, they tend to think it’s nice that I’ll be tossed there, too, b/c I ask too many questions that aren’t faith-based. And I’m not Jewish.)
BC
Tweety didn’t use the term “political Gettysburg,” but he just said that Wednesday morning, every paper from “Rangoon” to whereever will front page the Senate winner of the Democratic primary in CT.
yeah — I remember the CT Dem Convention which we liveblogged here while watching a net videofeed. We didnt know if Lamont would crack 15% and he ended up with 33% !!!

Also, Joezoe told all his supporters he’s running in November as an independent if he loses tomorrow. A lot of his supporters have to feel as though they don’t have to vote at all tomorrow, or they can vote for Ned tomorrow as a protest vote.

Cozumel @ 26
Scalia is such a judicial activist.
How long did that take? 2hrs? LOL!!!
I don’t like the way this race’s expectations are being “covered” by the trad media. Lieberman is an EIGHTEEN-YEAR INCUMBENT. He’s SUPPOSED to win — virtually ALL incumbents coast to easy victories in the primaries. And yet it’s being set up so that a Lieberman win, no matter how narrow, is going to be the ultimate validation of him, rather than a bare escape act against an unknown.
Lamont winning would have been a huge upset six months ago, and it’ll be a huge upset tomorrow if it happens.
lieberdweezel just cut and ran from tweety’s hardballs, a no show, and tweety didn’t seem too happy about being dissed by joenomentum.
wacky margins…
The Hartford Courant TROLL reporter on tweety…is a Rovian spinner what a LOSER…these reporters are useless!
Droopy Dog leaves Tweety high and dry. It sounds like some weird cartoon reference. Why are the highest-profile people in our country so easily caricatured? This is clear evidence of a ruling class versus ordinary people state of affairs.
.
jeebus xyz ! ol chatty cathy here has about half that rate – but folks are being receptive and it is the only thing to keep the knot in my stomach from growing any larger or tighter. and yeah, it has the significance I once felt in inviting women to meet up with Shirley Chisolm in a lifetime far, far away – only with better odds this time
My spidersenses are sensing something up wrt RGJoe’s no show on Lardball. With a race this close, its every media appearance counts time. Softballs being lobbed by Tweety is a golden opp to spew the stump speech, dig into Ned with some accusations of being a successful businessman and wave the signs on camera one more time with a friendly interviewer. Something is about to sideswipe us, I can feel it.
Can someone explain to me why so many in Connecticut don’t know much about Ned? I live in CA and have seen him everywhere. He is on TV, on radio, blogs. Who ARE these people?
Jane, you’ve knocked yourself out & have done wonders
as a born connecticutite, i’m praying [despite being an agnostic] that ned beats that joeker because otherwise our beloved country’s in joepardy — close only counts in horseshoes, as we learned in florida & again in ohio

They sure don’t represent the majority of the
people in their State do they?
Shell–I’ve wondered that, too. When I make calls, so many people–Democratic voters– don’t even seem to know Lamont is running against Lieberman (Auggy Doggie) in the Democratic primary. It’s just amazing!
Joe’s going to show up with a black eye, claming he was beat up by Lamont supporters…
Couldn’t make Tweety because he was takin’ the old short ride to the hospital…
Of course, he had to spend 12:30-5:20 getting make-up on, getting it just right…
Um, what are the internal polls showing?
FiniFini…I was thinking the same thing…BUT NAHHHH…I just think HolyJoe is exhausted and didn’t want to deal with tweety!
tomorrow tomorrow i love you tomorrow you’re only a day away
Shell — every few years or so, somebody does a poll of “the man on the street” and about 10% cant even name who the President of the United States is. Many Californians cant name their own two US Senators …
Maybe Jane will find out WHY RG Joe was a no show and will tell us later on.
Master Jack @ 28
This is funny – I called a buddy of mine an hour ago to encourage him to vote for Ned Lamont (he was undecided). He is now leaning Ned and he just called me back to say he was leaving his office building today and when he walked out of the elevator he literally bumped into Ned as he was getting in. We agreed that it was some sort of a sign.
droopy loopy IDIOT from the Courant was def a ReTHUG…no doubt even at the end of the segment he wouldn’t say who was going to win….still saying the voters were feeling sorry and tearyeyed for RGjoe…what a LOSER!
Does CT permit absentee ballots? If so, anyone have any idea how many have been cast?
Frank,
Nobody’s going to tell us what the internal polling is showing. Assume it’s close.
BC
Tweety said that RGJoe’s playing “all politics is local.” He seemed deeply offended as well that Chris Dodd owes him a phone call (”If you’re watching, Senator, you owe me a call!”) I think Tweety is wondering whether he’s relevant in this race, since he next proclaimed that he was “heading to Connecticut tonight.”
And he said if you were old, you had to learn how to use the internet, since he’s livecasting every hour tomorrow….
My take on NoShow Joe: he canceled after hearing Tweety’s Friday sign-off statement about how it’s time for the people against an unpopular war to finally be heard.
No way Joe wants to follow to that…

there may not be anything at all to Joe’s no-show. Campaigns always overschedule the candidate — sometimes the exhausted candidate simply has to demand down-time. Joe will be going tomorrow from 5am to midnight and he’s no spring chicken.
note to self: trade-in x-terra…
kemo @ 70
Exactly. Matthews would have tripped him up big time. Matthews is a strange bird but has always been against the war in Iraq. He’s all but endorsed Lamont.
I believe that the reason for Joe’s no-show on Hardballs was that he was busy putting lipstick on his 18-year old pig.

Say this for the Lieberman campaign, they know who their real supporters are and where to find them.
That’s apparently why some Lieberman-clad troops showed up to do a little visibility at a Chris Shays fundraiser with John Boehner.
So it wasn’t a last-minute endorsement for Joe after all. Just birds of a feather doing what comes naturally.

so, ya think the 4 hour hole in joe’s schedule was for tweety and then he just didn’t show?
NPR reported that there is a record number of new registrations. Made it sound like they were still coming in. Is it possible that CT allows registration right up to the last minute>
only political junkie types watch a lot of cable news and they are already engaged in the primary election …
Zorro at 13
Since we use mechanical voting machines (probably for the last time), it’s quick. At 8pm, they close the line to anyone else getting on, and let the people on line at 8 vote. As soon as everyone has voted, the back of the machine is opened with multiple witnesses verifying the numbers (tally display) and then they are reported to the sec’y of state and the media. I will be stunned if we don’t have a winner by 10p unless it is a razor-thin margin.
59 — Frank — you want internal polls posted here?? I sure wouldn’t! Isn’t that the point of an INTERNAL poll? Not for public consumption?
the suspense is killing me!!!

Cozumel @ 80
Tweety has always been against what war? Are we on the same planet? He endorsed the war from the beginning and halfheartedly changed his position this year while coddling the warmongers on his show every single day.
there are only 700 unreturned absentee ballots — they have to be in by August 25th. Yes, we might have to wait until then to know who won …
Lieberman’s website’s been “suspended,” via Connecticut Blog:

Funny but actually Matthews was against the war from the git go and said as much. But he changed his tune ….
Lieberman may have blown off Tweety because he did a live shot on local NBC in the 5pm hour — had to get to a studio. Local more valuable than national right now.
Just got yet another ROBO call of Joe yelling about the fact that he will always do what he believes is best….for the nation, and oh,yeah, maybe for CT, too.
Once it was a done deal Matthews went with the program… with relish.
I’m here, frantically answering phones at Lamont HQ and scanning the comments as we go. Can someone confirm for me that Joe was a no-show on Lardball (love that) and what show he was on at Pox News?

iirc, unaffiliated CT voters could change to Dem up until Noon today. The deadline for changing from R to D passed long ago. Don’t have a link, but (again iirc) half of the 20,000 new Dems are newly registered voters and half are changes from unaffiliated.

TRex — quite a kerfuffle on Hball re RGJoe’s no-show, also Tweety quite upset that Chris Dodd owes him a phone call!
Confirmed for you, in that I saw it with my own eyes.
I don’t have a link but I remember back when I used to watch the cable shows how against the idea of the Iraq war Matthews was. I haven’t watched any TV news or chat since the day after the Kerry/Bush debates. I just turned it off.
cbl @109 – that all just seems very strange…. what could be going on with that?
TeddySanFran @ 110
Well, if Joe is going to run as an indy, what would be the point of registering as a Dem? Unless you wanted to get rid of Joe . . . so who are these dissafected unaffiliated voters? People who are satisfied with the status quo or people who want change? Big clue: nat’l polling data re Bush and the war. I know, wishful thinking on my part.

“Chris, what the fuck is wrong with you?” is what I said.
Here is what just happened on local news in Conn…with HolyJoe
———————————————–
Lamont had just spoken before him and said Lieberman supported Bush’s Iraq policy. Lieberman has all day been apologizing for his stance on Iraq. The people who will fall for this are Sean Smith’s low-information voters. It’s freaky. Audio has been thankfully attached by Kestrel9000 below in this diary. Lieberman’s own words: “I hope that the troops can be out, begin to withdraw by the end of this year, and our troops, more than half, will be out by next year.” Am I wrong, or didn’t he just in June vote against two Democratic proposals to focus on troop withdrawals?

VERMONT for LAMONT
This is a SHOUT OUT to Ned Lamont supporters and all Democrats in Connecticut.
Today and tomorrow, like so many other Democrats, liberals and progressives living in Vermont, I am taking my attention away from the Peter Welch for Congress and Bernie Sanders for U.S. Senate campaigns. I’m continuing to make calls to everyone I know in Connecticut and asking them to get to the polls and cast a vote for Ned Lamont and cast a vote that will affect so many of us living outside of Connecticut.
Vermont’s congressional delegation was, I’m not aware of another one, the only state congressional delegation (house & senate) that voted as a block against going to war in Iraq — I wish we had a much bigger delegation. We are in the process of electing Peter Welch, who is a stand-up liberal Democrat and who is loyal to progressive causes. He is in a tight race and the national GOP is throwing enormous resources to his opponent. Bernie Sanders is a legendary progressive who fights the Bush administration and the GOP leaders in Congress every single day. Jim Jeffords is retiring and with, hopefully, with these two loyal progressive liberals joining our currently sitting ranking minority member of the Senate Judiciary committee, Vermont will certainly have one of the most reliably liberal delegations of any state.
Many Vermonters, like me, are proud of the years of hard work we’ve put into electing a liberal Democratic and progressively independent delegation, and we are proud when all of them stand up to the President and say “NO” to the obscene excesses of the GOP agenda. However, Democrats like Senator Lieberman, who regularly cancel out the votes of our Vermont delegation, are also a continuing source of frustration to all of us. We expect this fight from the kleptocratic Republicans. However, when the fight against the GOP’s failed economic, failing social, and most of all Bush’s entire failed militaristic agenda, is coming from another Democrat, Vermont loses much of the impact of its progressive (and small) delegation. The voice of the Vermont voter is most effectively muted when drowned out by a few other congressional Democrats. This is especially true, and in fact worse, when the fight comes from a D.C. Democrat with the national pulpit Joe Lieberman uses and which he built on the backs of so many of us Democrats.
I’m personally angered by the few Democrats on the national stage who came to Connecticut to campaign for Senator Lieberman. To me, it was effectively the same as if they came to Vermont and campaigned against the values we ask our congressional delegation to bring to D.C. on our behalf. Ned Lamont will not only represent Connecticut with a clear conscience and solidly good judgment, but he will be representing so many other people outside of Connecticut as well.
I’ve had this conversation with literally hundreds of Vermonters over the past few months who have watched the Connecticut U.S. Senate primary campaign – there really are that many of us watching and rooting for Ned Lamont — and, to a person, they feel like me that Ned Lamont will represent us too by representing Connecticut well. Just as so many Connecticut Democrats want Ned Lamont’s voice speaking for them in the U.S. Senate, those of us who have campaigned for so many liberal candidates and causes also strongly believe that we need Ned Lamont as an ally too.
For the next 24 hours I will continue to shout out to any Connecticut Democrat who will listen. My message is to ignore those few “character witness” Democrats doing their incumbent drive-bys and telling you why it is in YOUR best interest to vote for Connecticut’s incumbent senator. PLEASE, listen instead to the concerns of the legions of your loyal compatriot Democrats in other states who are asking you to think of what is best for ALL of us when you vote. A vote for Ned Lamont is a vote for those of us, in so many places like Vermont, who want our own congressional delegations fighting every rotten piece of the Bush agenda. With Ned Lamont in the U.S. Senate, those of us working to elect loyal liberal Democrats and progressive independents will be in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Connecticut in reforming an inexcusable rubber stamp Congress.

very spooky – it was there, honest! In fact seeing that droopy Joe face made me wonder why nobody has carved a puppet figure – which is what I see when I look at those face folds. Also, there were a bunch of big dog with attached joe-growth. weird
Kevin from VT – Hear! Hear! Excellent post.

Ditto, mon!
Kevin Leahy from Vermont @ 141
Yay for VT — my home state! Kevin, are you related to Patrick? (I always called the exit to middlesex off the interstate “moresex and middletown”)
Wow, Kevin Leahy, what a remarkable and cogent argument for nationalizing the upcoming November election, as well as tomorrow’s lead-off in Connecticut. Thank you, Vermont, for leading the way, and thank you, Kevin, for your hard work. This comment’s a keeper!
lotus 132 – amen! Where are all those good folk, anyway?
Quick OT comic relief: Another Bush administration member goes down – for over-accessorizing …
TRex, if you’re still around, Spazeboy said on an earlier thread that he really wants to meet you. He thinks you’re a blogger god. He is, of course, absolutely correct about that.
Oooh, the Float is on the News Hour! For once, a news spot that’s actually got a lot about Ned and is not very favorable about Joe.

But he is! Just like she! Amusing, and correctable, in a four-year-old, but not so much in a Senator.
A big phat AMEN for our Brother in Vermont !
Sharpton has really been a GREAT spokesperson for the Lamont points….Gotta give it to him!

Just back from Ct. I am exhausted, taking a shower and then going to do moveon.org for the last hour.
I had a lot of not-homes and a few Lamont solids.
I am nervous, not from anything about my experience today, but just because I feel like a lot of people put a lot of themselves into this.

But I want a

I’ve got a computer for a little while, I hope RevDeb told you that mine just died— without any hospice care at all!
It’s sooooo good to see you all, this has been an interesting experiment in reading the paper news and trying to learn the truth. Still haven’t turned on the TV.
If Scarecrow is around, my dear friend, thank you. Our lovely friend called to loan me a laptop last week, but we haven’t made it happen yet.
Missed you deeply, dear friends, truly I have. But I had to be here for this night and hopefully tomorrow as well.

p.s. The moresex exit is still there, I take it on my way to work every day.
It is absolutely incredible how much the neo-cons at the National Review want Lieberman to win this race. They are in an absolute panic. Like Glenn Greenwald said, can you imagine the republicans voting for someone that Micheal Moore endorsed? Yet Byron York, Ann Coulter, Jonah Goldberg, Bill O’Reilly, and all the other Bush worshipping right wing neo-conservatives are expecting Democrats to vote for Joe because THEY like him. When there ideology has been an absolute disaster for America the last five years.
http://sixers.nationalreview.c…..Y0YWIwZWQ=
Irregardless of what happens tomorrow – the Democratic party needs to grow a spine. To be this co-opted by the neo-nuts is sad.

The fullness of time be a thing of wonder, no?
Kevin, I still have a “Leahy for U.S. Senator” peel-off sticker on top of my comuter sent to me by a relative in VT. as a Christmas present. Not peeled-off yet. For my sanity and for posterity, now that I’m older. Vermont is so cool, literally.

Lotus, left you a message at the end of the last thread.
First heard of Sharpton during the Tawana Brawley episode. LOL

Cozumel @ 118
Back in the runup to the war, the only two people who appeared regularly on teevee who questioned the war were Wesley Clark and – gasp – Tweety.
Tweety didn’t come out and say “I am against this war, period,” but he questioned every claim BushCo was making, and I believe he asked why we didn’t keep the inspectors there longer instead of throwing them out and invading.
That all went blooey, though, when Commander Codpiece showed up on the aircraft carrier. Tweety went all girly about the Presnit then and it has taken him a long time to reconcile his questioning-the-war position with his shivery man-crush on Bush.
Tweety is big on symbolism, so things like purple fingers, flight suits, plastic turkeys, Texas
pig farmsranches are watersheds to him.Wesley Clark, I am happy to report, does not have, nor has he ever had, a man-crush on the Chimperor.
Fairly long News Hour piece on the race, which they characterize as a “political brawl,” withe the fundamental dispute about the war. Lots of footage of rallies and voters. Short Ride shown with union guys, clip of union leader. Lamont about bloggers and anti-war, then a clip of Ned defending that. Good shots of Ned in large, warm crowds
The Kiss float! Coupled with the footage of the actual kiss [which I’ve seen happen over and over and I totally love that they do this comparison]. They also show the joe gotta go van with brief interviews with 2 young blacks with great words of support. Next, stuff about Joe being forced to change his tune on war, clip of Joe’s speech from yesterday about respect for our right to disagree with President, blah, blah, blah lie, lie, lie, blah. Video of Q-polling boilerplate room. More of Lieber rallying support. Ned’s asterisk statement. douglas shwartz of Q-poll, saying the primary is all about Joe Leiberman, referendum on Joe. [WTF?? - this is the guy running the poll!] More videio of media coverage, ads, bloggers, blah. blah
Many just registering, so vbotes are there for the asking. Krumeich speaking to the variety of issues aout why we vote for Ned. Clip of some women who was voting for Lamont voter but is switching to Joe
because he has more experience. Clinton’s visit, David Glover and Maxine Waters, clip of her talking about unusual nexis, standing up on prog issues, he also has money to finance his campaign, firing up the blogosphere, and the youth vote.
Christopher Dodd and lieberman support, “will be close, he’s a very good democrat, I’m sorry we’re in the middle of this”. quoting the 90% bullshit. now covering Option to run as inedep.
Senior ciizens talking about Lamont and Joe as a traitor.
Citizen praising Joe’s bi-partisanship.
Gwen saying the race is rooted in other grudges, Weicker. Clip of Weicker in support speech. Then Cleland and saying even though they disagree on the war [WTF?], he still loves Joe. Very persuasive bit from Ned about the fact that the party brass don’t like the idea of a primary, “I got the message. Don’t rock the boat.”
Joe – now is not the time for change. He can make change for CT Ned will be another do-thing polarizing politician. woooosh.
Newshour was pretty good, and covered a lot of territory. They had not only the KISS float, but the KISS van as well, and talked with the two young african-american guys who were driving it around.
Also, in one shot of Ned walking a rope line and shaking hands, there was what looked like an ex-football lineman walking right behind Ned and checking out the crowd. Not secret service, but clearly security watching Ned’s back. After the incident with Joe’s lobbyist friend and the hamburger helpers, can’t say that I’m surprised.
They talked with the head of the Q University polling operation, who summarized the race as being all about Joe. Not Iraq, but Joe and the question of change vs. stability in DC. They also had a clip of Ned, saying basically the same thing: “If you think we’re headed in the right direction, there’s Joe. If you think we need change, here I am.” (my paraphrase)
There was also a sad clip of Joe whipping up the local troops. There were four folks behind him waving signs, and Joe invoked 1948 and Dewey v. Truman. He ended his spiel by calling out to the crowd, which squeaked back at him. When the camera turned from Joe to the crowd, it was easy to see why it sounded like a squeak: about 10 people there, cheering Joe on.
For folks who haven’t been following the race, it was probably a pretty good set up item for what will likely be some big stories tomorrow and Wednesday – however things turn out at the polls.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @ 171
You beat me to it, Fini. Yes, welcome, Kevin. You should know, though, that once de-lurked, forever “out.” Come back and chat when you have time. And feel free to bring your Dad.

Thanks for the kind words. Please do not consider my presence to be a compliment. The ONLY compliment, to be appreciated by fellow travelers this community, is mine and I am grateful. My wife and have been here at FDL for a long time and we frequently post as well.
I wanted to post today under my real name because I feel so strongly about the Lamont campaign, and I wanted my voice to be heard today from my real name so I could express the perspective I have on the Connecticut race which is that of someone who has been an active volunteer in progressive causes just a few miles north of Connecticut.

I’m sure JoHo will say the military votes shouldn’t be counted, even if it would sway a close election in his favor. He is a man of such integrity!
thanks, *ilson, missed you and your asterisk! How are the pupsters? Have we heard from MrsK8 lately? I can’t tell you how out of the loop I feel, but have caught some good Lieber-Lamont stuff on the radio, On Point did an hour late last week, it was fair and pretty good. Lieberman, of course, declined to join the discussion, but Ned was on and did a great job.
UptownChick, thanks so much for checking in and for being there for all of us. Hope you’re well and feeling energized.

Working out of the Norwalk office. Ned just came by and I’m so proud to be a part of this.

Lieberyouth=pendejos
Some good stuff from David Sirota on the Lamont/Lieberman race-
http://www.davidsirota.com/
Hi, zennurse!
“I don’t control what these people put on these things. But, yeah, there was one post that I thought was terribly unfortunate. I found out about it and we said ‘that should go, that should stop.’ This is an election, this should be civil, it’s going to be on the issues. I’m going to say that to anybody who pretends to be a supporter of the Lamont campaign”
Somehow I doubt Ned was dissing or distancing himself from Jane. We all know how careful one has to be in the hostile climate of the MSM. Notice his sentence is future tense, basically setting the bar for any posts to follow. The fact that he says the post was “unfortunate” is not putting anyone down, but saying he thought it was a mistake. He definately knows how to take the high road all around…
zen, so great to see you here, especially at this moment! I trust you are well and have been grappling with the tooobz satisfactorily. You’ve been missed quite a lot.
I was going to make calls for Lamont tonight through Moveon, but they have me signed up to work in some House race I know nothing about. What’s up with that?
Gotta love Sirota…and…he is hot too!
Hi, zennurse. We’ve missed you.
Kevin, welcome and I suspect that there are many similar to your in notoriety (lol)who read and comment here. I think WE are enormous in number and will prove it so in the months to come.
Just had bush on the news hour, he really doesn’t make any sense when he speaks. He rambles off on some big overview that only he sees.
I also notice that the MSM seems to be leading with the Leb. damage before Isreal. Been seeing that across the channels for some time, not what I expected.

It simply makes me nutz that a man who sat in his wheelchair outside the Bush

BarbaraB@198. Richardson was ambassador to the U.N. And was all the time getting lovey dovey with N. Korea when he was in congress.
CBL@208 Thanks, will mention that.
neurophius @ 222
Neo, don’t know what time zone you’re in, but calls to CT are being made until 9pm. If you signed up for anything after 6pm PST, they may have put you in another race. Otherwise, I don’t know!
Israel today put Lebanon on a curfew. Indefinitely. Let’s see now. Knock out their power, roads and the rest of the infrastructure. Then keep ‘em penned up in their hot-houses. Oh well. It’s dry heat. They’ll pull through. Or they won’t.
Jenny from the Blog @ 214
hey, shit happens
sorry about that
people figure out what I’m sayin, after a fashion
tweety was a cheer leader. he played the “skeptic” cheer leader, but he was a cheer leader
Donahue was the only one asking real questions
you know, questions like:
if the aluminum tubes are 88 millimeters in diameter, and Iraqi missile launches are designed to fire 88 millimeter rockets, maybe the tubes are rocket bodies ???
don’t actually remember Donahue saying exactly that, but I’m sure tweety never came close to asking a tough question like that
lotus, it was so nice to see your 132 just when I got on, you sweet thing.
I’ve just gone back to read Kevin’s comment upstairs and want to agree wholeheartedly. This is the whole point, it’s not just the war, it’s the “Don’t question the president or you’re unpatriotic”, it’s not voting for cloture. Joe want’s us to look at his record from twenty years ago, but as the Rethugs love to tell us, things are different now…
little dog -
What you said. UN-FREAKIN’-BELIEVABLE!
as a Senator from Georgia, Max Cleland was quite the conservative Blue Dog DLC Democrat, more so than Lieberman. But Connecticut is a tad more liberal than Georgia so they need not settle for a conservative Democrat…
Hi zen, thanks a lot for checking in it means a lot. Mrs. K8 has been on a few threads recently, and she sounds good. As you probably know, Valley Girl is back as “M” and karen allen is back too.

I notice since my last post a few more “welcomes” (I’m at the old dial-up today, refreshes are slow). I appreciate the welcomes, but please understand I’ve been with you for a long time and, just as I do at Kos and MYDD and many others, I do not post with the “L” word after my name.
It is insurance for me that people hear, accept, debate, reject etc. my comments and do so with no regard to the views of the more public member of my family.
As I explained to Fini FiniTOOBZ!, I wanted to post today in a way that best explained my perspective in my support for Ned Lamont.
Kevin
who’s moderating now?
nerophius,
either go to nedlamont.com, or email info@nedlamont.com, or operations@nedlamont.com
Unlike the soon-to-be ex-Senator from Connecticut, the senior Senator from Vermont always listens and responds to his constituents. I know, because I have had personal experience.
PS: Vermont not only has the most progressive Congressional delegation, it also has tthe most intelligent and articulate.

If you intentionally misspelled Coz’s name, it really doesn’t qualify as the civil discourse, which is what we try to stick to, especially, when it’s between long time commenters who share more or less a common vision.
Criticizing Coz or Tweety doesn’t help you make a very fine point about Donahue. I was unaware of that and it’s certainly worth remembering since we have so few friends in the TM. I appreciate you mentioning it.
fwiw, Joe’s website is still down so please try http://www.WhoIsJoeLieberman.com — enjoy!
I am aware that only CT military can vote. May be hard for Lieberman to get the votes without having found the WMD’s. If they always vote Republican then I guess they have been playing with those votes for years. The Dem soldiers hand their ballots to the Repub generals…I heard the MSM mention a couple of times that this election could be decided by the military so it sounded like they were planting seed. Anyone know how many Connecticut guys are in the military AND the National guard?

And he was Secretary of Energy. And is perennially running for President. There’s no way he is going to piss off the Democratic establishment. I’ve never been a fan of his, but I’ll cut him some slack if all he did was donate. He could have come and campaigned, and maybe done HoJo some good in Latino neighborhoods, and he stayed home. But I didn’t mean to suggest you shouldn’t contact him about it. The time will certainly come, and maybe already has, when “are you with us or against us” is going to be a very important question, and showing up at Ykos doesn’t buy anyone a free pass. Really, all I was saying is that I’m not as mad at him as I am at Barbara Boxer.

“Lieberman is a typical boomer, he wants to ossify the past as some kind of character testimonial, but he doesn’t want to deal with the present in any sort of intelligent way.”
many of us boomers have been fighting and bleeding for this goddam country for a long time and have not wavered in our committment and energy thru a whole lot of shit. so steve up yours and your snotty crap. lieberman is a pig but i wonder if you’ll be one too a few more decades down the road. you want to build a coalition, you want to save the planet for our children….don’t stereotype and don’t go needlessly out of your way to piss off some folks who have been at it for a long time…we win tomorrow great, help articulate lamont’s stand on the issues of the day, we lose we fight the next fight and the next and the next till we die…..get the friggin picture stevie?

*ilson….LMAO!
Barbara, meta, neuro and N. Leslie, thanks.
When Deb called, I teared up to think anyone was worried, thank you so much. The 100 degree heat wasn’t fun, but I am managing well. To have my firedoglake family so suddenly inacessible has given me a new look at the place and purpose it has in my life. My coworkers teased me about not being able to “blog” until a week ago when scarecrow called me on my cell to offer his computer and to check in. I happened to be in the office at the time and my friend Lillian was so touched that someone from my “blog” would go to the trouble to do that; it really opened her eyes in terms of the level of communication here and the relationships that are created.
It has also made me think about the overwhelming misinformation out there about how things work in online communities. Just before the motherboard thing, we had been graced with some one-sided commentary from Kurtz and Brooks about how horrible we are here in the fever swamp and heard the same from the head of the DLC during the Ct Primary show on NPR. YOu know what? How dare they? How dare they, without coming here without their arrogance and having a real conversation as we seem to do every day? There is more to say about this from my perspective, but not tonight. Tonight belongs to our friends in CT and our beautiful Jane Hamsher who has relocated during a personal crisis to patriotically help out a candidate she believes in. Yeah, what a bitch.
Just heard that Juan cole will be on npr tomorrow-wbur at noon, talking about Iraq getting lost in the Israel-Lebanon thing, if I heard correctly. I’ll update that in the am.
YOu guys are the best.

Christy says moderators should coddle the trolls but tonight we are all too hyped up to tolerate deliberate disrupters…as soon as I see a troll, they get deleted — this deletion isnt seen immediately on your screens until you reload your page with F5 or reopen the page…

It’s official, Lamont won. Aravosis is more inside the Beltway than much of the MSM. Hell he won’t even call for Bush to be impeached hehe.

It’s Troll Season, and *ilson’s got an open license . . .
But leave the trolls to the professionals: catch-and-release can be dangerous. We don’t want more to come by when the see a ruckus.
IOW: Don’t try this at home!
so if I hit F5 the troll posts go away
and if I don’t they stay ???
why would I want them to go away ???
wouldn’t it be better to rig that feature thru the refresh button instead ??? (I just hit refresh at the bottom of the page, I don’t know about this F5 stuff)
seems to me that there’s a hole that the trolls can work thru

Hold your nose, it’s from Faux news.
HARTFORD, Conn. — Six years after becoming his party’s nominee for vice president, Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman faces a struggle to keep his Senate seat in Tuesday’s primary against an anti-war challenger.
snip
Lieberman’s seat was the biggest prize at stake. The three-term senator, nationally known for his centrist views, faces harsh criticism in his home state for supporting the Iraq war and has been labeled by some Democrats as too close to Republicans and President Bush.
Challenger Ned Lamont, a millionaire owner of a cable television company, held a slight lead of 51 percent to 45 percent over Lieberman among likely Democratic voters heading into Tuesday’s primary.
Lieberman has tried to persuade voters that he is still a true Democrat and says Lamont will need “training wheels” should he ultimately win the general election.

Hi Christy, good to hear you again, sweetie, I’ve been thinking about your hands in this heat, parrafin, parrafin, parrafin. Hope Fiona and Mr RH are well and can’t wait to look back at the last couple of Saturdays.
zen, a few years ago I was a member of a small online group focused on a particular financial subject. Over the course of a couple of years we learned so much and we all became very, very close. Soon we began to focus on every subject in the world, mostly politics. Then one day, one of our dearest and wisest members revealed that he was going into hospice and within a week he was gone. I can’t tell you what a strange and moving experience that was for all of us. I will never forget those people. This community is real.

john in sac at 289 – the top photo at the post you link there, showing the entrance to the “ranch” – the black helicopter hovering right over the entrance sign looks like it’s part of the design. An interesting unintentional irony.
Matt says there are a lot of primary voters reading blogs, but the idea that the opposition to Lieberman is due to bloggers is nonsense.
Interview over. It was tres short.
that “refresh comments” button doesnt really refresh all comments but merely adds fresh comments to the already existing ones. If a troll snuck through onto your screen, it’ll stay until you actually refresh your entire page with F5. If you go to another site and then return to this page, you will get the current troll-free presentation.
by the time you have typed your bon mot to the troll, the troll will have been deleted. So dont feed the fucking trolls, please.

Yes, I know exit polling is the most inaccurate form of polling when Diebold machines are in play.

To all the wonderful FDLers ( Christy and Jane et al) – I feel like I know all of you and feel you are my friends – even though you don’t know me. (and this is not the time to do a bio!!! (-:)
I have read FDL from the beginning! What an amazing experience for me – people, thoughts, recipes, loved animals, etc etc.
But I am feeling rather sad, because I had finally got the courage to comment a few times in the last a few weeks (probably EPU’d) – and I guess I don’t have what it takes to be an FDL’r to get a response or a welcome.
But this Support for Lamont and the election is an amazingly important time, and I am trying to give you all my love and support as I try to deal with this awful world.
So I say to y’all (lived there in the South, too! (-:) – Go All Of You!!! You are doing the important things, I send you and Ned the most positive energy that is in my system. And one of these times I will send something worthwhile for you to maybe repond to.

Check out these links illustrating tactics and motives. When the dust settles, someone might want to look the circumstances of the UConn deal and any like it. Just a hunch.
Richard Goodstein — the same Washington, DC lobbyist and Sen. Lieberman supporter who disrupted Lamont campaign visits last week — was presented as a guest expert on U.S.mid-term elections on the WJLA-TV Washington, DC news show Capital Sunday on Aug. 6. The co-hosts of the ABC-TV-affiliate treated him as a “Democratic Strategist” with no reference to his controversial week as an angry Lieberman advocate in Connecticut, or as a lobbyist-advocate. Connecticut bloggers have reported (based on scrutiny of DC records) that he received $360,000 in lobbying income last year. The TV show, to be posted on the station’s website soon (http://www.capitalsunday.com), is co-hosted by Kathleen Matthews (wife of Chris Matthews) and Leon Harris.

From a Ned Lamont Campaign press release Aug. 4: Lamont Campaign Decries “Paid Hooligans”
I’m as worried as hell about the result of the election…but honestly I expect a BIG Lemont win. This is based on the energy I sense in the Lemont supporters. Most of the people who really believe in Lieberman are not eligable to vote in tomorrow’s Democratic primary.

I’m actually glad to be in Calif., I’ll know the results long before I go to bed.
I’ve donated twice to Ned’s campaign and I EXCORIATED Babs Boxer for supporting that asshole Lieberman. She wrote a mealy-mouthed reply form he PAC site, which I’ll share if anyone asks. I wrote her back again, and have not heard back.
Aftyer Tuesday, assuming Lamont wins, we have to contunue the fight, but don’t forget supporting Jon Tester in Montana over thaqt evil, corrupt Conrad Burns, whom I’ve met and he’s an asshole.
I also don’t think it’s too soon to think about who we want to challenge Boxer and Feinstein in California. Any suggestions?
KathieinMN, au contraire on folks not recognizing or appreciating you. You’ve been contributing for several weeks now, and AM I GLAD!
Do not let Ned give up with a RECOUNT – if God forbid it comes down to this……..
I don’t trust Joe at all; he may call in a favor from W., and Karl…for a diebold fix.
Do NOT concede like Busby. Hold out — look at Mexico.

> But most telling about the Lieberman campaign among the negroes…
What’s up with all the racial issues here? First blackface, now “negroes”…
Ya’ll need to get out more.
Alan at 342 — FYI — that was a quote of GIlliard, who happens to be of the darker flesh tones, if you get my drift. Maybe you should pay more attention to the “blockquote” feature before posting smug snottiness. I’m just saying.
Also, take a peek at this. And then back off.

The following remark is offered against my better judgement:
Note, however, that the word “negroes” was part of a quote from another writer. That writer generally referred to black people in his article, and the context of “negroes” suggests an ironic commentary on the gauchness of the Lieberman campaign’s outreach (as did, fwiw, the blackface cartoon, aka the dead issue).
TeddySanFran @ 110
I have been bothered by these reports of new registration and haven’t seen any analysis of what this might mean for the vote on Tuesday.
Seems to me that this could turn out to be a wild card that tilts the voting one way or the other, but which way?
The latest poll indicates a significant reduction in Lamont’s margin compared with the last Q-poll. This suggests a shift in momentum in the last few days. Could it be that these new registrations are trending towards support for RGJoe? I hope not.
i think its time for another reminder of the link to the moveon phonebank….its fun….sign up…remind a few likeminded CT voters to GO VOTE

KathieinMN,

Bless you Gold Star Mother!
Immanentize
This is an irrelevant commment, but MY GOD your Tomato Pie was Delicious!!! Thankyou.
#340’s got it right. With polling so close, the fix is in for a 50.1% Leiberman ‘win’.
I don’t know if CT uses Diebold or ES&S electronic voting machines, but if it uses either, this will not be a fair election.
Remember: for as long as exit polls have been used, they’ve been so accurate that they’re the gold standard by which the US & UN measures corruption in international elections.
Yet in 2000 & 2004 when for the first time in history the exit polls started to wildly differ from the official results, the mass media assumed that the exit polls were wrong. They never seriously questioned the new electronic, networked machines that counted the votes. Instead, they abandoned exit poll reporting. It was too ‘inconvenient’.
If those machines will be used tomorrow, then the vote will be manipulated electronically. Leiberman’s too useful to this administration, and they won’t allow Ned to take his place.
Sorry.
A very sincere thank you to all of you who have helped on the ground. All I did was send money.
This is a BIG race to those of us who think nationally. I want incumbents out. They have failed us.
And Joe is failure #1.
Is anyone going to live-blog this tomorrow night? I have a sneaking suspicion the MSM won’t give it the attention I am going to crave.
Exit polls, up-to-date real numbers, analysis, GOTV thoughts…inquiring minds will want to know. Plus I’ll want to know if The Man is creeping in to steal the damn election.
God bless you all for fighting the good fight in any way you can. I’m cautiously optimistic, and also believe that win or lose, this is a win even if it is close.
Time to get some actual wins, however.
