such a last-minute speech is a sign of great desperation…

Honestly, this guy needs professional treatment.

Candy Crowley, however, may be beyond professional help.

hmm – reminds of me of the (self-mocking) analyst friend who – when told of truly awful early childhood events elsewhere on the planet – joked*, “well, that’ll put a wing on some therapist’s house”.

on that scale, Candy Crowley’s remedial media literacy training buys a small tropical island paradise.

The time to act on one’s feeling of “heavy responsibility” was months ago, when Murtha and others who originally supported the war put their political lives on the line in speaking out for a change in policy and a change in course. Joe’s support then might have made a difference, but now it can only be seen as Joe trying to throw himself a life-preserver to keep from losing an election.

The voters of Connecticut can now, finally, be assured that the only life that matters to Joe is his own, and that the lives of American troops serve as mere political fodder for him when necessary to try to resurrect a dying political campaign.

I’d say he should be ashamed, but it is clear that he is well past that now.

Shorter Joe:

“Of course when it counted at the time, I wussed-out and claimed that Democrats were disenfranchising enlisted voters.”

It is too bad the “fighting” Joe Lieberman showed up at the eleventh hour of his campaign.

OT, *ilson, thanks for the link to Joezoe’s “cut and run” speech. The few people in CT who still support him must be really confused now. IMO, Joezoe’s flip/cave on Iraq will absolutely suck all the oxygen out of dominate the TM coverage between now and the time the polls close on Tuesday.

Lieberman Defends Iraq Stance in Bid to Win Back Voters

Senator Joseph I. Lieberman made a last-ditch attempt this evening to defend his support for the war in Iraq — and for President Bush on some issues — and to win back doubting voters in Connecticut before the state primary election on Tuesday.

Using his strongest language of the campaign in a speech that might well determine his political fate, Mr. Lieberman said that he still believed his vote to authorize the war in 2002 was correct, yet he now felt a “heavy responsibility” to end the war quickly.

He said he wanted to withdraw American troops “as fast as anyone,” yet insisted that quitting Iraq now would be a “disaster” that could lead to further sectarian violence there.
