Dan Gerstein, official house LieberWhiner whose accusations of anti-semitism against the liberal blogosphere have yet to provide any actual proof in the form of one (just one, let’s have it, even one) single blog post that could be construed as such, finds his former pro-Joe blog…shutting down three days before the primary.
Get out your hankies, LieberDem is no more.
I find it highly amusing that Michelle Malkin, Anne Coulter, the Red State racists, Sean Hannity and other paragons of reptillian brain wingnuttery are so addicted to their own sense of victimhood and martyrdom that they could not help reaching for the anvil that is Joe Lieberman just as he is circling the drain. It certainly lays waste to the lie that Lieberman is some kind of moderate — these people do not do moderate and they would not be the slightest bit interested in defending him if he did, either.
I have no idea what the result will be on Tuesday — probably a lot closer than my stomach would wish — but as Sirota says today, everything that JoeMentum, the Wingnuts, K-Street, interest groups (hello, NARAL!) stand for is threatened by this race:
You can also take a look at right-wing neoconservative icon Robert Kagan’s piece in the Washington Post lamenting how Lieberman is supposedly the "last honest man" in politics – a desperate attempt to distract attention from Lieberman’s open, brazen, disgusting, insulting lies about Iraq and Social Security. Kagan wants us to believe that "the questioning of [Lieberman's] Democratic credentials is absurd given that he was, after all, the party’s candidate for vice president in 2000" – right, because to DC insiders, that VP-nominee distinction is a good excuse to make sure no one looks at Lieberman’s moves to sellout working people on issues like trade or health care.
This is what it all comes down to, folks. Washington lobbyists, Enron shills, and right-wing neoconservative ideologues in D.C. will keep showering Lieberman in cash and praise because Lieberman has served them so obediently over the years. And they are afraid that Lamont might actually be a Senator who represents ordinary people that they could not control.
That is what this race is all about. That is why the Washington cocktail party circuit is freaking out as never before. They know that this could be the beginning of the end of the era where American politics is their exclusive property, where public policy is handed down from their gated communities in Northern Virginia, and where the future of this country is decided in air conditioned office suites on K Street. They are, in short, having a collective temper tantrum that small-d democracy actually still exists in America. And come Tuesday, if we work as hard as possible, we’re going to show them that their panic is justified – because we’re taking our country back.
At least Joe Klein had the good sense to bail while the getting was good. Others have too much invested in the status quo to cut bait now. I guess LieberDem smelled the coffee and got the hell out of the Joementum business, but I have to say, it’s pretty skanky to turn your back on the guy three days before the primary. It is such a vicious dagger in Joe’s back, setting up a site like that and then deciding the whole endeavor was too pathetic to stick with even for a couple more days.
We backed Ned Lamont even when it seemed hopeless. Joe’s supporters couldn’t even crank out a couple of more blog posts just for the sake of appearances. That’s actually kind of sad.
Meahwhile, the Lamont campaign continues its innovative strategies. Matt Stoller has more here.

Ned!
Ned! Ned!
Hi Jane.
Nothing ’sad’ about it. I just hope Ned wins and further that he wins by enough, say 5 pts., to shut the pundits up.
If he wins now he’ll clobber Loserman in the general.
Some troubling thoughts on this race over at MyDD…
This would be a big win for we Americans who never drank the Kool-Aid. But even if Ned loses, I met him in CA so I feel OK using his first name, progressives must keep fighting until we destroy the right wing control of the Republican Party.
To me the time waiting for the actual primary seems like an extended foreplay, the primary being the orgasm and the reports next morning the smoke after the orgasm. I hope it is going to be good for everybody.
Love that van. If Lamont wins, the Kiss Float should be saved for posterity. Maybe it should go into the Smithsonian. :)
but what will happen to the uneaten cocktail weenies?
THINK OF THE WEENIES!!!!!11!!
after all, how many weenies can you buy for $60?
I popped $9.20 to buy the domain name http://www.LieberDem.com parking it usefully but I was kinda hoping that some well-heeled LieberLawyer would approach me with an very generous offer to buy that domain. Come on guys, only 3 days left to buy a real killer name!
kobe !
Great article I stole from Huffington:
“Who would have thought that Republicans, who just six years ago stormed the Miami-Dade County civic center holding hundreds of signs reading “Sore Loserman,” would be now shedding crocodile tears for the political career of the number two Democrat on the 2000 ticket? Republicans might soon lament that their favorite Democrat will be put to pasture because even in Bush’s America there still exists a faint heartbeat of democracy.
Rightwingers like David Brooks and Fred Barnes call the candidacy of Ned Lamont a “single issue” anti-war campaign, run by crazy people from the blogosphere, an “inquisition” inside the Democratic Party destroying the careers of “moderates” and “centrists” with a “litmus test” on the war in Iraq. They seem to want to return to the era before the 17th Amendment gave ordinary citizens the right to participate in the direct election of Senators. There were no “litmus tests” then. (Memo to Democrats: don’t take tactical political advice from Republicans, they probably don’t have your best interests in mind.)
We do not need more Liebermans. Just look at the state of the Democratic Party: losing the House of Representatives for the first time in forty years (1994); Gore/Lieberman (2000); Max Clelend, Dick Gephardt, the Senate (2002); Gray Davis (2003); Kerry/Edwards, Tom Daschle (2004). The “centrist” strategy of “Republican-lite” has failed miserably, bringing us wars, Constitutional abuses, deficits, signing statements, a judiciary modeled on Antonin Scalia, environmental degradation, and all of the other attendant civic atrocities of the Republican juggernaut.
The Democratic voters of Connecticut have the opportunity to begin the long process of cutting through the illusions of the war in Iraq, and extricating our country from the icy grip of the Republican Party.

And Jane, no matter win or lose on Tuesday night, I want to say for the State of CT Democrats, we THANK YOU for coming . I met you in Branford a couple of weeks ago. You are Terrific.
Love the van, Jane – very creative.
The entire Lieberman campaign has had a strangely disconnected air about it for some weeks now, maybe because even now, Joe can’t make himself believe that he has to prove to CT voters that he should get another 6 years in the Senate.
I hope all those DC insiders, the complacent ones in “safe” districts, the consultants who never have to do anything more than dust off the last campaign playbook are all shaking in their shoes, lying awake at night and looking over their shoulders during the day. They should be worried about what is happening out here in the real world, not just on “issues,” but on the power that plain old ordinary folk are able to gather and use effectively to be heard on what matters to them.
Rock on!
(Jane – how are you sleeping at night, and how are the poodles holding up?)
Rob Zuber @6
I was trying to explain to someone today that the Kiss Float has become the visualization of the whole campaign, something EVERYONE remembers. There’s no way to know what its real influence has been, but I know that it has made a difference.
I’m going to be a nervous wreck on Tuesday. I can’t imagine how you guys on the ground must feel. Nothing quite like vacillating between excitement and nausea.
Envying Jane’s new friends in Connecticut, I also thank them for welcoming her in her journey. Thanks for treating our Lady so well, Nutmeggers. We know she’s in good hands.
A nation turns its weary eyes to you, Connecticut.
Hi, Jane. Seen TRex yet?
“Got my Van’s on, but they look like sneakers”
(a bit of Bay Area hyphie for y’all)
/kicks can/ all the popular bloggers are in CT. sob, it’s no fun to be poor and only able to afford one blogging vacation per quarter.
I didn’t realize the Vice Presidency was so sacrosanct. Oh wait.
I love it when right-wing neoconservatives try to tell Democrats what’s good for Democrats.
It’s total BS 99.9% of the time.
I think it quite commendable that Lamont has criticized Lieberman for basically supporting Bush’s position on Iraq but I have not been able to find out Lamont’s position concerning withdrawal. Is he for it or does he advocate that the U.S. stay the course [also known as “stay and die”]? The topic of withdrawal should be the major issue that every candidate who is seeking a major office in this country should be talking about but I have not been able to ascertain where Lamont and Charlie Brown stand on this issue.
*ilson, it’s the Sabbath.
We in Ct. will not the nation down, on Tuesday the first shot at the Washington club will be heard. Ct. Dems will lead the way.
Lamont’s postion is the same as Murtha’s.
Don’t believe all of those polls folks. Those Senators and Representatives are not nearly as safe in their districts as the cocktail weenie set would have you believe.
We can’t count on the Democratic Party to sweep this corrupt government away, because frankly many of them have too much invested in it and don’t want to unhook themselves from the feeding trough of corruption. But WE can change it ourselves, with or without Hillary and her krewe.
Tuesday Lamont! 2006, the House of Representatives, and the Senate! 2008 the Presidency, and the Supreme Court! 2010 and 2012, we clear out the deadwood.
Give em Hell, FDL! :)
The flat statement, “The DLC strategy does not win elections”, is even more powerful when accompanied by proof that a progressive strategy *does*.
I’m bummed because I will be offline Tuesday through Thursday; can’t share CT Primary Day with my littermates.
For Erroll – Ned Lamonts website and the war issue..

Kurt @ 25
I’d like to toss in an impeachment or two in there for good measure. :)
This has been, even from a viewing distance, an exciting primary. I am endlessly fascinated by how obvious and uninteresinted the attacks on Lamont and his supporters are, yet how carefully and seriously they are repeated. The system of incumbency and money is so very well-entrenched that a campaign like this one is inconcievable.
I think it is underappreciated how against-narrative this is. A major Dem losing a primary on a year when Dems are poised to win back one or both houses. The pundits and political journalists simply do not have a script to work with. What is especially telling is that rather than try to get their heads around it, they rushed to oversimplifications (the first sign somebody really does not understand–they assume it is really simplistic and obvious).
This campaign shows several things: the growing importance of internet communication (blogging is critical but not all of it). That incumbency is not impervious to attack. That the Democratic party is no longer persuasive as party machine, even in the bluest of states, and that the politics of Bushism (whether mouthed by Republican or a Democrat) do no sit well a lot of people. All of that is wonderful, but those who live off the beltway spigot will now be “inexpert” and not the authority because they did not see this coming. That, in addition to all the other reasons, makes it upsetting, something to be treated with skepticism rather than delight.
I’m bummed because I will be offline Tuesday through Thursday; can’t share CT Primary Day with my littermates.
Pittsburgh Drinking Liberally is actually going to convene in a bar with wifi on Tuesday.
i’m so naughty. i’m singing that song from a recent atrios post, thinking about holy joe and certain deep, watery holes. someone stop me.
Payne, you still around?
I can’t say enough how impressed I am with Ned’s friends family and neighbors tool. Think about all the shit you get in the mail every day, but wait here comes a postcard with a message from a friend or family member telling you about Ned. Talk about cutting through the clutter!
And for those who sent them, a follow up email telling you who you sent to and reminding you to call them for GOTV. There are so many ways this can be used it makes my head spin. This should be adopted nationally and immediately!

President Pelosi ‘07?
chicago dyke – A quick thanks for your recent drive by live from D.C.
Enjoyed it.)
I meant to post this down below with regards to Goodstein.
Here’s a suggestion to anyone who runs in to him at any other Lamont events.
Carry a megaphone, stand a short, safe distance away, and start chanting:
“LOBBYISTS FOR LIEBERMAN! LOBBYISTS FOR LIEBERMAN!”
at him.
Just follow him around…and keep it up.
:)
Carry a megaphone, stand a short, safe distance away, and start chanting:
“LOBBYISTS FOR LIEBERMAN! LOBBYISTS FOR LIEBERMAN!”
at him.
When life hands you hecklers, make hecklerade.
…Or something.
My Orthodox friends tell me that Shabbos is meant to be a time for reflection, for family and for being in the moment, free from the distractions of every day life.
I’m sure Joe is right now quietly reflecting on whether he should run as an Independent if he loses the primary, and what has brought him to this sorry pass.
Or not.
SoulCatcher @ 35
Actually, that’s what some people did – it’s on Bob’s video.
I have to say, I thought shouting Lieberman Lobbyist was unfortunate. IMHO I think it’s much more effective to take the high road and I think this idiot should just be ignored. He’ll crash and burn all by himself. Perhaps he already has…
Throw the Joe in the well!
(just to torture Chidyke)
Rob Zuber @ 28
Impeachment hell, I want executions for treason :)
Some Guy above @ 6:44 hit it right on the head. Incumbency has poisoned the country, and the people have had enough of it. Lamont is just the start of the phenomenon, but certainly not the end of it (if we have our way hehe). I’m sure Jane and Christy can lead us to the promised land!
SoulCatcher @ 35: If there actually WAS a Lobbyists for Lieberman, he would probably draw some really big crowds. Surprised they did not think of that given everyday Connecticutans don’t seem especially interested in showing up for Joe.
Throw the Joe in the well!
So my party can be free!
Looks as if the moon is in the sign of Lamont’s birth (Capricorn) on primary day–a good omen.
As someone who occasionally does home plumbing, the metaphor of an anvil circling a drain was singularly unsettling.
That aside, I’d say one of the more long-lasting effects of this campaign is the creation of the prefix: “Lieber”. It’s meaning is basically: “evil putz wanker”. Almost as useful as “6 and a half friedmans”.
As I’ve stacked this winter’s firewood today, I’ve been chuckling to myself thinking, “Lieberyouth”.
Some Guy 6:44 pm –
the Democratic party is no longer persuasive as party machine
Le roi sont morte; vive le roi!!
The OLD Democratic Party is now uttering its death rattle; it remains in a state of unconsciousness, dreaming of a time in the mid-70’s when unions still held sway, when presidents could still be impeached, when communications were fastest on foot or by phone, and ticker tape parades would fete winners. Members of this Party may still pride themselves on not being able to find the power switch on a computer, as if this was a badge of honor, a mark of the ultimate anti-intellectual.
We await the time when we can gently pull down the eyelids over the vacant eyes and send them to Valhalla.
ES- thanks! please, leave a comment. i’m all over dying grannies, hollowood liberals, and crappy ass anti-blog pieces in the MSM today.
immant- watch it, bro/sister. we actually have a well at this property. you could be next.
Op99 @ 21: It may be the Sabbath but someone in the Hartford office told me (gasp!) that Holy Joe was out campaigning today!
Also — does anyone else wonder whether the chaos of Lieberman’s “campaign” — up to and including the College Republicans — might not be some Rovian triangulation: Lamont, in their eyes at least, might be a weaker senator, the whole Democratic party gets into an uproar and, of course, Joe might jump ship, in which case they’d have a good shot at gaining a seat. Just sayin’
OK, I was feeling good after the second (53-43) poll came out, but now Bowers and Jane and everyone else all have me freaked out. I suppose I will not die if Ned loses, but some significant inner thing will.
Rob Zuber, Yes! I’ve been thinking all week that the kiss float–Americana, Public Art, Political Turning Point, should be preserved in the Smithsonian.
Chidyke It’s been hot enough that I might throw myself into a well in the city….
My Grandparents had well water for ever. It was lightly sulphurous and had a very distinct wiff about it. Whenever I went to their house, even if I didn’t drink any water or there wasn’t cooking going on, that little tiny smell — a little metal in the mouth — on my back teeth was there. They are both dead and whenever I catch that smell, I grieve.
in all seriousness- listen people, win or lose, lamont is a victory for us. the fact that well-bound joe is even considering the tactics he is makes this movement powerful. let’s all remember just how ‘assured’ he was of victory, just a short 12 months ago.
the dlcers and consultant class are running scared, and have every advantage. and yet, still- they fear us. that’s something to be very proud of, and as EG says at the crack den, if we win: it’s a party. if we lose: get drunk, sleep it off, and wake up the next day ready for another round. what else are you going to do, stick your head in the sand and wait for WWIII to begin in earnest? not if you love your children/families/nation.
Anne – I does sound nice and a bit to rigid for relaxation.)
Eli – Joe is obviously so tired and angry about this primary. If he loses the primary, I can’t imagine a run for Nov. is in his cardiac region. He is going to have to start from scratch completely and there has been no sign of it so far.
Lamont has all the kineticut energy
Hey, Eli – I actually deleted that comment and moved it over to the “Reason” thread – but that’s okay. Apparently, there has been some questioning of whether Joe was out campaigning today, which would seem like something he’d have needed his rabbi to advise him on. If being a Senator is Joe’s job, than campaigning – even if done on foot – might be considered “work.”
But, what do I know? *g* I’m just a garden-variety Episcopalian who happens to have some Orthodox friends, who have, over the years, helped to educate me on lots of these things.
Payne: Methinks that good oppo research is in order for Dickie Devos. Thousands of people have lost everything due to the scam that Amway is, divorces, suicides, the wreckage just goes on and on. This guys has enough skeletons in his closet to fill 3 warehouses. Get digging!
Eli – Joe is obviously so tired and angry about this primary. If he loses the primary, I can’t imagine a run for Nov. is in his cardiac region. He is going to have to start from scratch completely and there has been no sign of it so far.
I don’t think he can imagine *not* being senator, though. And on paper he’s a stronger candidate in the general than in the primary, because the non-Dems like him a lot more than the Dems do. Not sure how turned off they’ll be when he spits on the primary, though.
If being a Senator is Joe’s job, than campaigning – even if done on foot – might be considered “work.”
Granted, I’m the farthest thing from an Orthodox scholar, but I would think campaigning would *have* to be considered work. Based on the other examples, whether or not one gets paid for it really is not a factor.
chicagodyke – I just have to say that I sincerely hope that this is one election – the first of many, I hope – where we can claim actual victory instead of just moral victory. As imm said, above, we aren’t likely to die if Ned loses, but something inside us surely will, even if it’s only a little something.
I am just sick at the possibility of having to face the right-wing glee-fest if Joe wins.
We need an actual we-got-more-votes-than-the-other-guy WIN!!!
Throw Joe in a well and tie up Lassie
Lautenberg is right — a solid win by Lamont greater than a 10-point spread would be politically fatal for Joe. If it’s closer, Joe could convince himself its worth a try for the Cut’n Run Party — the Joe4Joe Party …
immanentize 7:00 pm — no. Don’t give into that.
We’ve been through this before, at least those of us who are hardcore Deaniacs from before the 2004 primaries. We were on a roll, we had the world by the tail, and we got bodychecked. It hurt like a mo’fo’.
And we’ve been through this with Kerry, Rodriguez, Hackett, Busby…but we will not throw in the towel. Each one of these losses taught us something, showed us a shortcoming that we are learning to address. The right took 40 years to build its successful machine; we’ve collapsed that to a couple of presidential terms.
The truth is that Lamont could lose; stranger things have happened. But it’s far too early to do anything but keep our heads down and concentrate on GOTV — and whatever happens, we are winning a moral victory with BOTH parties, making it very clear that we are going to clean the motherf*cking house eventually.
I’m certain that HRC’s performance was informed by what we are doing; at least she’s got the smarts to figure out the lay of this new land. Lieberman is obviously too stupid or too corrupted to hold office any longer, and I hope that the folks of CT will make that clear to him on Tuesday.
Anne @ 58
hear, hear! Thanks to all you folks in CT who are making the big push.
imm, jmo, but I think they have to say it.
Lieberman started false rumors that they were tanking their gotv efforts to lull Lamont into a false sense of security. IMO, Lamont’s surge is of such proportions that the primary victory can block Joezoe from running in the general. It’s too late, however, for Ned to change message, so I think what we’re hearing is absolutely the right way to go.
That’s what I’m saying, Eli – I don’t think there’s a prohibition on walking, for example – the Orthodox walk to synagogue, they walk to a friend’s house for lunch after services, they walk to the park – but doing it in furtherance of your job has to throw it over into the category of work.
Op99
I don’t know if you got the message I left for you a few threads back. You can sign up to election monitor in NYS at

I am also waiting for a reply email with direct contact info for the county coordinator in your area. May take a day or two.
Twisted Martini 7:07 pm — the MDP is all over that, baby, been impressed that they actually went after Dick like they did. Have you seen this?
WhatYouDontKnowAboutDick.com
Yeah. Now that’s what I’m talking about.
OK, re: work, The Rabbi Hillel tell a tale of a rabbi on the Sabbath who was spending the morning sitting in his garden in contemplation. After a few hours, the young Rabbi looked about him at his splendid surroundings and was filled with the wonders of God. But, as he surveyed his garden grove, he noticed that one of his pear trees had a number of dead branches. “Tomorrow, after Shabbat, I will prune that tree to make it more productive and attractive.” The next morning, when the Rabbi woke up, he looked out his window and saw that the same pear tree had been scourged by God and it had withered and died.
That is what the prohibition on work means.
You guys are doing a yeoman’s job up there. I hate it that I have to work and can’t be on the line. I have contacted all my CT friends and all of them are on board, will vote Lamont and are canvasing.
Hey, Rayne – I left a note for you on the Pull Up a Chair thread this morning. Wanted to thank you for your supportive comments last night – it really helped. Am planning to take your advice and bring a mental surfboard to my next tidal wave dream! Have to laugh at myself, though – I was over at my Mom’s today, helping her try to get organized for her move, and found myself saying, “Now, Mom – just take a deep breath or two and remember – one day at a time. It’ll all get done and it’ll all be okay.” Need to sit myself down in front of the mirror and give myself that same lecture – LOL!
imm — I’ve heard that story before and I still dont get it.
anne, all: it’s a weak spot for me as my training is in ancient middle eastern history, but iirc, we should all think of the first American revolution. washington’s forces “lost” again, and again, and again…but somehow, won the war. when we tally all our “losses” i think that’s how we should see ourselves. it’s one thing to “lose,” it’s another to be defeated. so long as we keep fighting, the latter will never be applied to our cause.
preznit giv me turkee @ 7
I believe the current price of a LieberWiener is @ $350,000 a year, but for that you can get him to come to Connecticut and make a scene at a diner.
immanentize @ 66
Do we take that to mean “don’t even think about work? Am I reading that correctly?
Jane: A minor point, but would you please start spelling Ann Coulter’s name correctly. It is ANN with no E at the end.
I believe the current price of a LieberWiener is @ $350,000 a year, but for that you can get him to come to Connecticut and make a scene at a diner.
That’s a dick, not a weiner.
Actually, the University of Hartford has one of the largest collections of political memorabilia in the country, (#2 to the Smithsonian) called the “Museum of American Political Life” — new space currently under contruction. It might be a perfect place to enshrine the kiss float!
Thank god Steve Gilliard hasn’t predicted a Lamont win…
However, I (in all seriousness) am filled with confident hope…
It is not what you do on the Sabbath, it is the spirit in which it is done. Thinking about work is as bad as doing the work itself. All these little tricks — can’t turn on light switches, walk instead of driving, no cooking — these are all formalized events that speak of ritual far more than the spirit of complete surrended to God and your place in his universe. But isn’t that always the case?
Thank god Steve Gilliard hasn’t predicted a Lamont win…
I believe he has already simulated the election with Space Marines, but he’s not telling us how it turned out…

hasn’t an excess of testosterone already ruined so much of America’s foreign relations?
Caring for a tree in need would not be work to me. A nurturing reflex is not work. Ignoring it would be more mental work than helping in the described situation. imo
chicago dyke – you’re right. If Ned were to lose, we would take the smaller, internal, victories we did have, build on them, and keep fighting. It would be harder to do through the gleeful shrieking of the “other side,” but we would do it.
But, really, even if Ned wins on Tuesday, the fight is far from over. It would just be nice, for a change, to see those smaller victories end in one that will give us the spirit and energy to keep up the fight. With so much at stake, in the bigger picture, we really cannot let up for a minute.
hasn’t an excess of testosterone already ruined so much of America’s foreign relations?
So true.
Anne @ 63
I realize that an Irish Catholic School girl, even one from NYC, is no expert; but I believe that an Orthadox Jew who wants to walk anywhere other than to and from services is supposed to confine them selves to an “enclosure” called (IIRC) an Arev (sp?).
It is actually wire strung up around the perimeter of a neighborhood to create a technical enclosure
that’s right, anne. we’re in this for the looooong haul.

Floyd Landis, a schmuck. Rabbi Hillel, a mensch.
I’m afraid the wingers will really pull out the machinery for November if Ned wins Tuesday. Of course, that would be just fine. Let them spend a ton of money in CT. That means less in other races.

lhp – (good to see you – hope all is well with you and family) I think that is correct. I know from my friend that there are sects within Orthodoxy – some even more strict than others – and I think it’s possible that a rabbi can define that area (I think it’s “erev”) without necessarily having to have an actual fence.
Regardless, I think it’s unlikely that Joe could campaign on the Sabbath with the approval of his rabbi.

My husband thought it was horse shows – watching horse after horse (after horse) jump the same course of fences – twice – and thought it was hysterical that we would dissect each horse’s trip down to the minutiae of whether the horse took off too soon or too late, whether horse was on the wrong lead, whether horse’s knees were up and level, whether his head was down…see you’re all probably falling asleep reading that, which would prove his point…LOL
Per my inquiry, Eureka Springs, Ak. at #27 directed me to Lamont’s site regarding the withdrawal issue. While it is encouraging to read that Lamont believes that “the troops should start heading home” {when- immediately, or in six months?}, he also believes that “our frontline military troops should begin to be redeployed.” The hope is that people, especially liberals, will not be fooled into believing that redeployment is the same thing as withdrawal. The two are entirely different. If those troops are deployed, to use Murtha’s term, “over the horizon” or under, above or beyond, this will not deter the Iraqis into beleving, justifiably, that those troops can be sent back into Iraq, at a moment’s notice, merely at the whim and capriciousness of the United States. U.S. troops do not belong either in Iraq or in the region. Period. By keeping those troops redeployed, perhaps to Kuwait, reinforces the notion to the Iraqis that the U.S. intends to maintain a permanent military presence and occupation in the region. The politicians, especially the so-called liberals, should start concentrating and advocating that those troops, which would be ALL the troops, should begin returning to this country as quickly and as rapidly as possible.
Most boring sport: NFL football.
Most exciting sport: Kiss Float rally.

Sharkbabe at 76…What is the relationship of Gilliard vs wins? I assume he is batting zero?
Is he an electoral jinx? I may be also; I have been sending money to Lamont for months and I also supported Rodriquez,Busby,Cegalis,Winograd and several others with the same result.
The Hartford Courant is reporting 20,000 new registered Democrats in Connecticut. I wonder if these newbies are Democrats anxious to get into the game and defeat Joe or are they sneaky repugs who conveniently switch registration to vote for their “favorite democrat”?
Referring to predicting winning, even Kos is keeping with his “I do not believe we can take back even one of the houses of Congress” rant because he has been wrong every time he predicted success.
And as a post-Dean Iowa reflex, I do not hope, anymore, for a big win. Just that we make progress in telling America the truth about what is happening.
It sounds like the next state might be Michigan for an all out offensive against this Amway – Blackwell guy. Ugh.
I never seem to be able to stay up until the late night thread — and tonight is no difference. Good Night, Firedoglakers.
Keep the faith — 36 hours to relief….
Sharkbabe – I can’t WAIT for football!! Training camp underway, scrimmages starting, pre-season almost here. Hot damn!
See how anxious I am? 72 hours until we get some word. My stress split the time in two.
Anne @ 122
NFC East will be most interesting.
Anne @ 123
I’m reading the Newsday Jets and Giants training camp blogs religiously. I devour every tidbit I can get my hands on.
NFC East will be most interesting.
That’s going to be one tough division, especially if my boy stops throwing off his back foot into coverage…
Erroll – I agree with your assessment. Look at the alternative. How many will stand up in Congress and support Murtha today?
72 hours from now we should know if Ned had a decisive win which’ll flush Joe out permanently. If it’s a squeaker, Joe will cut’n run…
Kurt @ 116
matzo fast there, fella
I just hope TO has the “expected” impact in Dallas.
Jay @ 119
I believe it was at MyDD (too tired to check) it was made clear that NONE of the new Dems since May 8 were Republicans switching party. They were either new voters of unaffilliated voters switching to Dem. It was a good analysis. Oh hell, just went and snagged the link for you.
Hey Anne — I saw the note but I was on the run, couldn’t stay. Glad to be of service; I’ve been luck to have friends who’ve helped talk me over a few speedbumps, happy to do the same.
We could all of use a little mental surfboarding, really; one wave at a time, enjoying the anticipation of the wave building, mounting the crest and riding for dear life. And then waiting for the next wave.
I’ve had some real kickers for dreams, some repetitively; usually that’s an indicator I’ve got something I need to address. Like the one where I have a snake wrapped around my neck – I ‘ve had that one when I feel unable to speak out (rather literal dream, yes, being choked?). Or the “dark man” dream, usually an indication that my creativity is being squashed by something or someone. And then the ever popular driving backwards at 80 mph down a brick alleyway, unable to brake…I’m out of control or terrified of a lack of control.
Took me years to peg the “dark man” one, until I read Women Who Run With The Wolves. Bingo, an archetypal dream, made sense as soon as I read about it, hit me like a thunderclap.
It sounds to me like you “recognize” the source of your dream and what it means; the challenge for you is to find that mental surfboard that will help you ride the big waves. Maybe you need to find a way to allocate some dedicated “Anne” time to ponder this, so that you are not literally swamped by the waves in your life.
Hang in there. You’re definitely not alone, have plenty of company.
Caution — Ziggurat approaching! Ziggurat approaching!
Anne, your description of the horse show was so exquisitely funny that it defies your point. Very clever.
Jay – those registered as independent or unaffiliated can register Dem – or GOP – right up to the day of the primary. If they are already registered as a Dem or Republican, they cannot switch if it is less than – I think this is right – 90 days before the primary (same applies to the general, I think).
Erroll @ 113
I would say that is essentially Murtha’s and Lamont’s position. Sounds like you would differ with them on how fast is “possible”, but that at least is a reasonable discussion. The problem now is that extremists are in charge who are using a phony “war on terror” as an excuse for indefinite occupation.
Also, unless I’m mistaken, when Murtha says redeployment, I think he mostly means redeployment within Iraq, away from population centers and other places where are troops are vulnerable.
Ziggurat approaching!

I’m kicking the other can. The lesson being: don’t give away your miles to relatives thinking you won’t need them. (Oops.) But I am in the process of getting my s–t together and I think I will be in the position to help GOTV for Mr. Lamont’s November election race.
It’s after sundown now here. Does that mean I can blog again?
Anne – my family too thinks that horse jumping is just too lame for viewing. I actually have been known to shout out as a horse approaches a fence – “NOW” or to shriek as a horse gets in to close and ‘climbs’ the 5 1/2 foot fence and clears it. The MN state fair is coming up and I just found out that the horse show starts a day early and is FREE. I will be there. All day. I don’t care what classes there are – suspect junior huntseat or something — I just like to watch horses.
Sometimes on the sport channel one can catch international show jumping but it is not always on at the same time. Best vacation ever would be the horse show in Canada – in Quebec maybe? Just to go for a week and watch would be a dream.
Sorry back to elections.
Thanks to immanitize and Anne for making me feel a lot better
Eli @ 126
You’re not a Steelers fan?
Erroll @ 113
I think a lot of FDL’ers would agree with you that complete withdrawal is the only reasonable military option. The Rumsfeld Doctrine, just enough troops to lose, has trumped the Powell Doctrine, which requires a military objective. There are no objectives for the US military in Iraq or Afghanistan. We are an occupier and our troops are simultaneously pawns and targets.
unfortunately, when Murtha says redeployment he means ‘nearby’ like in Kuwait or Qatar. They will be easily available to handle ‘a crisis’. The phrase used is “over the horizon”…
Proximity leads to temptation…not good!
You’re not a Steelers fan?
No; transplanted New Yorker.
Ok firedoggies. Relax. I will predict with absolute certainty, that Ned will win on Tuesday. Trust me on this one.
How do I know? Well, let me just say I have never been wrong, ever. OK, except for that one time…
Rayne, love Clarissa Pinkola-Estes.
Anne – Estes has many tapes/CDs of stories that are very healing. Wonderful soothing voice.
Sheez, I just had to say the F-word…
Steve 118 – I’m hazy on particulars re Gilliard and predictions – I just recall it’s turned out not to be his strong suit in recent years.
No such thing as a jinxage when a movement’s being built – let’s hope Tuesday is pivotal.
JANE…be of good cheer….for this race we cannot lose….even if Lamont comes up short on votes we have already won the fight. American voters, through the work in CT are coming to realize we DO have the power and the money and the voices and the organization to regain our vaulted positions as the real energy that moves this nation.
I did not feel that way when 5 USSC judges usurped the peoples right to choose our president in 2000, I did not feel this way when we lost seats in 2002, I did not feel this way when Kerry failed in his 04 bid….when we lost those races I was dejected, depressed and downright disfunctional….
But win or lose that Primary ton tuesday we have broken the myth that incumbants are unchallengable, that the democratic grassroots is unorganizable and the DLC is unstoppable.
so please, between phonebanking, door knocking, handshaking and media talking…. do a bit of Yoga Breathing this week-end and BE OF GOOD CHEER…..when this all started we came to make a point that we have more then made 10 times over…ignore the grassroots at your political peril…we will not be marginalize anymore.
Most boring sport?
How could you fail to mention?
Cricket!
Eli and bill – weeellll…I’m one of those dreaded Ravens fans…Steve McNair looking pretty good in practice, Todd Heap looks like his go-to guy.
It’s about damn time we had a QB – we’ve only been through about 9 of them, each one was going to be our QB of the future…sigh.
McNair has to stay healthy (which is not likely, given his problems – and his age), ’cause all we got in back-up is Kyle Boller.
And T.O.? How many weeks will it be before his Cowboy teammates are ready to ship him out?
looseheadprop @ 150
Didn’t they get the name from the sounds heard while the game was afoot?
And, let me add that horse jumping is a great sport. Darling wife was a competitor in three day when she was younger and one of the youngest ever to qualify for the equestrian Olympic team when she was 16. Still loves horses, as you may expect, and is quite the rider.
Eli and bill – weeellll…I’m one of those dreaded Ravens fans…Steve McNair looking pretty good in practice, Todd Heap looks like his go-to guy.
Bleagh. Ravens and 49ers are tied for my least favorite teams in football, with the Raiders close behind.

Some advice for your Giants when they play my Cowboys: blitz! blitz! blitz! The Dallas o-line is looking shaky.
the other day on the bus I talked with a young man carrying a cricket bat in Indianapolis … he was of Pakistani extraction and was on his way to play in a cricket league… the Raj lives!

If Strahan and Umeniyora hold up, and they can work in Tuck and Kiwanuka, they may not *need* to blitz. I’d like to see what Arrington can do, tho.
Wonder what would happen if Bush planted a kiss on Ned? Perhaps this?

The Redskins are my least favorite, being my home team. Plus their owner Dan Snyder is the greediest mofo on earth besides Dick Cheney.

Snyder is a punk. I don’t mind the Redskins themselves that much, but I can’t stand him. Or Al Davis.
GranmaJ – my daughter rode for a number of years, and while it was grueling to spend so many hours at tthe shows, it was a great experience.
When husband would come to the shows, I would stand with him at the ring, and give him the play-by-play. Our daughter was wonderful at equitation, and in a group class on the flat, I would be saying things to him like, “See that rider? Her back isn’t straight enough, and her heels aren’t down. That one’s legs are too far forward. This one’s hands aren’t in the right position, and her sitting trot is too jiggly.” He’d just look at me and ask how on earth all that stuff could matter so much.
*ilson46201 @ 111
let’s ask commenter Veruca
Ned Lamont forcing this primary was already a victory. Now, he’s in a position to actually win it. Who’d’a thunk it six-eight months ago? Getting this far was an amazing achievement (helped by Lieberman’s incompetent campaign) but now it’s down to “boots on the ground” (if you will permit the usage). It’d be real nice to see Mr. Lamont hang 6 (years, points) on the scoreboard for Progressive Dems.
Snyder has at least figured out that he should stay out of things. Gibbs is pretty much running the show now.

Kiwanuka is more of an eventual replacement for Strahan, I think. If their secondary improves, that pass defense could be scary.
Hey, did you know that the Giants actually drafted *two* grandsons of African heads of state?
How ’bout them Colts?

Sorry.

Course it’s been kinda all downhill for the Ravens since (thought I’d say it before you did).

With the tightening of the bump and run rules after five yards beyond the los, I don’t think anyone’s pass defense will ever be scary again.
I wonder why it is that people on the right keep bringing up Lieberman’s role as 2000 VP nominee as if that makes solid his Democratic creds.
Just about everyone in DC knows the reasons for Gore’s choice of Lieberman–he was a DLCer, he was a social issues scold (which was supposed to appeal to the religious right) who had joined forces with Tipper Gore to bring sweetness and light to the music business, and his geographic base, the Northeast, was the counterweight for Gore’s Southern background. And, most importantly, by bringing in a self-referential moralist like Holy Joe, he could distance the campaign from Clinton’s moral ambiguities.
And just about everyone in DC also knows that two-thirds of the way into the campaign, Gore realized the extent of the mistake he had made–both in pursuing the DLC platform his advisors had convinced him would win, and in picking cold-fish Lieberman.
To suggest Lieberman is an archetypal Democrat, because of that poor strategic choice of Gore’s, is not only wrong, it ignores the facts.

Last year was their year. I can’t believe they couldn’t defeat the Steelers.

Not me. I still remember watching the cross country event at the LA Olympics (which was actually held in Rancho Santa Fe) and wanted desperately to go to the equestrian events in Athens. But then, I breed show horses, so I kind of have to like going to horse shows. I agree with you about baseball, although for me it’s tied with football. I wish they’d put the last game of the World Series on the same day as the Super Bowl so I could miss them both at the same time.

You realize, of course, that facts have a well-known liberal bias and are to be avoided at all costs for this reason.
Canvassed in New Haven for Ned today – in Joe’s neighborhood and other spots. Actually was within paces of Joe walking to synagogue.
It is rewarding work, even the rebuffs were cordial. Nutmeggers are getting kind of fed up with the constant contact though. I imagine voters are more used to this up in New Hampshire.
Saw _plenty_ of Lieberman workers out there. All kitted out, and lawn signs on a lot of public land at busy intersections. I wouldn’t think he’s folded his GOTV one bit. There was a concert on the New Haven green, each corner was manned with many Lieberman workers.
Please keep up the pressure! This is really not over until November!

I suppose I’m the only one that is hoping for a close enough vote on Tuesday that Lamont wins and Lieberputz decides to run as an Independent. Perhaps it’s only for my own amusement, which, yeah, that’s kind of bad. Sort of like Rapture-ists hoping for the End of Days to hurry up and come.
But, let’s assume it does shake out that way. All those beltway Dems that stood by Lieberman are going to have to either pull a 180 and speak out against their erstwhile friend, or they are going to have to explain themselves to the rest of the Party, how they could put loyalty to an Independent over the rightfully elected representative of the voice of the people of Connecticut.
It’s an interesting predicament, is it not?
We can probably guess that the hardcore moderates (what an oxymoron, eh?) like Marshal Whitman will whine aloud and try to undercut Lamont if only to protect themselves. The rest of the Dems, though, people with a better sense of long-term self-preservation, like Clinton and Biden and Dodd, will probably offer to campaign for Lamont, while not speaking out too harshly against Lieberman.
It’s the rest of the Party, though, the ones that come out and both support Lamont AND harshly critique the Independent Lieberman run that I am waiting to see. Who has waited to see how this will shake out, and will come to Lamont’s rescue, aligning themselves with the real base of the Party? That’s the question. We already have some wonderful people like Maxine that we know about. Who else will get off the fence?
k, i know i’m going to have to turn in my credentials of blogging snarkmeister first class for asking this, but what exactly does the mis-spelling of “the” (eg, “teh,” as in “teh funny”) indicate?
i’m unclear. in fact, i’m opaque.
At least with Cricket you get chirping. I’m going to vote for curling, although having been drug to a slew of sports as a kid – I have to say, track meets have some of the dullest moments a child should ever be forced to endure..
I LOVE baseball. Scratching and spitting and all. But “in the park” is completely different from “at home.” Baseball in the park is all the best parts of everything. Where else do you spend your time handling money, beer and stuff for complete strangers (and relying on them for your stuff too), and yet it almost always works out perfect.
I also used to judge low level dressage, and have been told that Training level tests are the most boring of all horse activities, ever. I refuse to believe it – despite some pretty good evidence it may be true.
Matt below – really good piece.
I know how you feel and will be happy to share a cigarette with you on Tuesday!
