[Ret. AF Lt. Col. Charlie Brown will be with us today to chat in the comments section about his candidacy for the CA-04. Please drop by and give Charlie a great FDL welcome! -- CHS]
The kinds of Inside-the-Beltway/corporate media pundits who specialize in rear view mirror predictions aren’t picking up on many of the Blue America candidates yet. Many of our challengers are still under the radar to the pundit class — but not to their opponents.
The huge Republican registration advantage in California’s very gerrymandered fourth congressional district has helped incumbent wingnut John Doolittle feel secure since he was first elected in 1990– that and the kind of special interest money (more on that below) he has been able to spend to defend his seat. In 2004, Doolittle spent over $900,000, and the Democrat spent $2,061. Two years earlier another Democrat managed to muster $7,548. Doolittle countered that with around a million. He took 65% of the vote both times, even more than Bush took in the district. The race is 2006 isn’t quite so one-sided.
But before I tell you about Charlie Brown, this year’s democratic candidate in California’s fourth district, I want to make sure you know who John Doolittle is and why his race is so important nationally.
If Charlie is at a disadvantage because of registration and because of the corporate money flooding into the district to protect Big Business’ favorite rubber stamp prostitute, Charlie has one over-arching advantage: Rarely is there a race where the choice is so stark and clear, and where there can be no question about who is wearing a white hat and who is wearing a black hat.
I mean you get a similar dynamic in McNerney v Pombo, Space v Ney, Tester v Burns, Sestak v Weldon, Laesch v Hastert, but when it comes to alleged sheer and blatant corruption, few others can hold a candle to John Doolittle.
Most congressional slimeballs specialize in one or two genres of criminal behavior. Not Doolittle. Like Bob Ney, Doolittle has his greedy fingers in every single pot: he’s raking off gambling profits from Abramoff’s Indian tribes; like Jerry Lewis, he’s selling earmarks to municipalities in his own district; taking bribes money from corporations selling shoddy military equipment like Duke Cunningham; working the Tom DeLay prostitution angle in the Marianas; allegedly he and his wife rake off 15% of every dime that comes into his campaign; he’s virtually on the payroll of Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Finance and every corporate special interest ready to shell out the "legalized bribes" for legislators who won’t think twice about selling out their constituents’ vital interests for a pot of gold.
And if John Doolittle comes off a little like he’s from another planet from time to time– like when he made his infamous and snide remark about the kind of people who eat at Baja Fresh in the midst of demands that lobbyists stop bribing congressmen, it’s probably because he really is not like the rest of us.
Basically, he’s a guy who has never held down an honest job in his life, having been a professional politician/whore since he was 30, always profiting at the public trough. Utterly out-of-touch with the real life concerns of ordinary Americans, Doolittle was born within walking distance of my house in what was once a lily-white Republican enclave of Los Angeles (and is now far more diverse, as well as economically and culturally vibrant). Neither diversity nor vibrancy — culturally or economically — have been served by John Doolittle’s shameful career in politics.
I mean, we’re talking about a congressman who can’t think of a better way to represent his district than to introduce 3 separate bills to give congressmen $130 daily expense accounts while, of course, consistently voting against raising the minimum wage for people who aren’t lucky enough to be able to eat at a Baja Fresh, or even afford medical care for their families, and who probably can’t comprehend why someone making over $158,000 a year (with an unbelievable package of benefits that ordinary Americans can only dream of) is constantly asking for more taxpayer dollars for his expenses. The tiny minimum wage increase Doolittle has fought against would put less money per week into a worker’s pocket than what Doolittle wants for "walking around money" per day (and which amounts to another $32,500 increase in congressional pay raises). Even Doolittle’s greedy and self-serving Republican colleagues wouldn’t support him on these outlandish demands.
It would be an infinite task to go through all the filth and corruption that has earned John Doolittle a place on everyone’s list of the top half dozen worst congressmen. And in fact, there is a really terrific blog Dump Doolittle dedicated to just that. This is a team effort of local bloggers in CA-04 whose work will one day be the backbone of serious criminal charges against a congressman who makes Randy "Duke" Cunningham seem like a naughty prankster by comparison.
Today’s Blue America candidate, Air Force Lt. Col. (Ret.) Charles Brown is as far from being a Doolittle type as one can be.
He’s certainly not a career pol. But he certainly is a man of great personal and professional integrity, whose idea of "service" isn’t wrapped up in "self" but in community and country.
Charlie is a folksy, plainspoken, common sense kind of guy, very positive and a complete "glass is half-full" sort of person. Although he officially switched parties in February of 2005, he told me that the last Republican he voted for was Gerald Ford. He saw the hard right turn the Republicans were making and voted for Clinton twice, once for Gore and in 2004 he was a member of Veterans For Kerry.
"I kept hoping the Republican Party would get back to standing for something… things I supported like a balanced budget, states’ rights, smaller congressional budgets and less corporate cronyism… I wasn’t happy when Rove and the faction that has taken over the Republican Party assassinated John McCain’s character and then Max Cleland’s and then Kerry’s. These people seem to have sold their souls."
Yesterday I was so overjoyed when Phil Angelides endorsed California’s Clean Money Proposition. Clean money and public financing of elections are a cornerstone of Charlie Brown’s entire campaign.
"We should limit what congressmen can spend on slick media campaigns so they have to come back to the district and talk to the voters face to face… Voters can accept having a congressman with whom they sometimes disagree if he or she comes back home and explains it to them."
Like many Democratic challengers, Charlie faces a vicious practitioner of hot button politics.
"Wedge issues split us apart," explains Charlie. "Benjamin Franklin had it right when he said that either we all hang together or we’d all hang separately. Everyone agrees we need affordable healthcare. Why aren’t we at least talking about providing healthcare for everybody? Why aren’t we having a real dialogue on clean air? Same thing for a good educational system and a viable national security. But we can’t even talk about the major issues when there’s a small group who wants to divide us by talking about flag burning and gay marriage… all these things government ought to stay out of… I don’t want the government in my bedroom and I don’t want the government in my gun cabinet."
Charlie was a career military officer — so expect the Republicans to swiftboat him and disparage his service like they do with all American fighting men and women who challenge them. Charlie was flying rescue helicopters in hostile fire while in Vietnam while Doolittle was seeking 3 consecutive deferments.
"He talks the ’support the troops’ line, but he always votes against benefits for veterans and troops when it comes to spending dollars on medical care, education and equipment for active duty servicemen… He votes no on a bill that would have given $430 million to the V.A. for hospitals but turns around and votes to approve $700 million for a train track to benefit casinos in Mississippi."
Sounds good, right? But can he win?
Well, just like Eric Massa, Charlie won’t take any Big Business PAC money. His donations have come primarily from $10 and $20 contributions from people concerned about good government.
"People," he told me, "want some hope, hope that someone in government will be there to listen to them and try to help them with their problems and looking out for them when it comes to health care and Social Security."
And where the Democrat in 2004 spent a total of $3,000 on the race, in this quarter Charlie has already raised over a quarter million dollars. If he can get his message out to the folks in Mother Lode country north of Sacramento, he’s going to walk away with this race.
If you think investing a contribution in this good man and in our nation is worthwhile, please give what you can to Charlie’s campaign at the Blue America ACT BLUE Page. This week SONY Records has donated 25 Johnny Cash 2 CD sets of his most beloved songs. The first 25 people who contribute to Charlie’s campaign get the CDs. (If you don’t want a CD, just add a .01 to your donation.)

As always, Howie, fantastic post and great job introducing Charlie to FDL. Welcome Charlie — we’re awfully glad to have you here today, and appreciate you taking a little time off the campaign trail to talk with us.
Gang, since Charlie was nice enough to come here to chat, I’ll ask that we keep comments in this thread on topic. If you have issues outside of Charlie’s race that you would like to discuss, please do so on the prior thread. Thanks!
Howie! Christy! Rootz!
Thanks, Christy. I just spoke with Charlie on the phone and he’ll be joining us in a few minutes. Right now he’s listening to a song that was written and recorded right out of a Blue America session. The song doesn’t get officially released til Monday but… what the hell: give it a listen.
OK I am set to donate to Charlie, also, who did I miss last Saturday, Howie? (Work had me on the road again.)
Thanks Howie, great summary of how corrupt Doolittle is.
I have met Charlie Brown and I am impressed with what he stands for. I also read Dump Doolittleto stay informed on this creep’s corrupt.
ifthethunderdontgetya, last week we had a great session with Eric Massa, another Fighting Dem, this one from NY.
Charlie,
1. Can you tell us about your district, urban, rurual, etc?
2. What are the top three issues you are hearing from voters in our district?
3. When you are in congress, what are the top three issues that you want to focus on?
Hi Charlie. Has Doolittle agreed to a date for the debate yet? Also, CA-04 is such a strangely drawn district and covers a huge geographic area. What qualities/issues have you found are important throughout our big district?
And thank you SO MUCH for putting yourself on the line in this important race.
Katymine, you sure know how to get right to the point. Charlie will be with us in a few minutes.
Good morning Charlie Brown!
Thanks for joining us this morning.
*{reaching for credit card again on a Saturday}*
Hi Howie!
katymine beat me to it in the questions department — silly bear playing with all the new buttons, missed his chance to ask the questions….
Hi Charlie! Great to have you here, and let me echo LindaR’s thanks for you stepping up to serve your country (again!) in this way. It’s a privilege for me to support your campaign.
A little financial update: our ACT BLUE Page went over the $140,000 mark this week and we should hit $60,000 for Ned by Tuesday.
About the district it includes Lake Tahoe, a large portion of what is called the Mother Lode – where gold was discovered in 1849; the Gold Rush. It includes the Sierra Nevada Mtns east of Sacramento up to the Oregon border. The district has some of the fastest growing and developing cities in the US. Doolittle gets lots of developer $$$$$.
Howie, your work with Blue America is fabulous. I believe you are creating an institutional force — for good!
Do Doolittle’s constituents know what a corrupt bastard he is and put up with it because “at least he’s not a *Democrat*”, or are they just completely oblivious?
Hi:
This is Charlie. So glad to be with you all this morning (it’s still morning here in CA).
We’re here at our campaign office. Got about 40 volunteers out front, scrambling for chairs to get them all trained.
Let’s chat.
-Charlie
Ca4 IndepforBrown (#14), welcome. Do you know if Doolittle has been involved in any suspicious land deals like some of the other California Republicans and Hastert?
BTW — love the tune, and the name of the band, too, ha.
I’m in.
Maybe this is the first donation today from Russia? :)
Keep em coming.
Welcome Charlie. Thanks for joining us. Katymine asked some good questions up at #7
Howie Klein @ 18
Most recent is his blocking the Homewood Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe which the US Forest Service was going to buy.
He blocked it so it could be sold to a developer.
Howie, I’ll email it to you, what we know.
What’s the makeup of the CA-04 voters who *aren’t* developers?
Charlie:
Do the people of your district know about the extent of Doolittle’s corruption, and do they care? Or more specifically how can you make them care?
Just to set a baseline, Charles Brown’s line on the ActBlue page showed 6 Blue America donors for a Blue America total of $340 before I pitched in my pennies.
Earlier question about the district: runs from Sacramento east to Lake Tahoe, North to the Oregon border–northeast portion of California.
Has all of the California side of Lake Tahoe–main population centers are Roseville/Rocklin/Lincoln.
All told–17,000 square miles, so you could say I’m very well traveled of late.
Just to set a baseline, Charles Brown’s line on the ActBlue page showed 6 Blue America donors for a Blue America total of $340 before I pitched in my pennies.
I think one of them was me…
Another little financial update: we just went over $1,000 for Charlie– the fastest we’ve ever hit $1,000 since Blue America started. I guess a lot of people either hate Doolittle or love Johnny Cash (or both). And wait ’til you get to know Charlie!!

Charlie, to echo katymine at 7 and Twisted Martini at 25, when you talk to voters in your district, what do they tell you about their primary concerns – and is Doolittle one of those concerns?
Twisted Martini @ 25
Yes, it’s definitely getting out there. SacBee had another major article today, and other newspapers are running stories.
Doolittle of course calling it a “liberal smear campaign.”
People of all party stripes fed up and joining us.
This campaign is about unity, getting back to “We the People,” and simple right vs. wrong.
That’s why Doolittle is so worried.
Charlie, if there actually is a debate with Doolittle, will it be carried on C-SPAN?
Fox News is reporting that Lamont is some wealthy playboy with girls all around him.
Mr. Brown, thank you for your service to our country, and for volunteering again to serve. My question is about what you hear from voters in CA-04: do people want to support you or do they want to get rid of Doolittle?
In other words, are you tapping into a protest vote, or are you getting a positive message out to your future constituents?
Again, sir, thank you for all you do. This can happen.
Charlie, I have to say that your come backs to Doolittle’s attempts to slime you with GOP speak (example ACLU Member)and the attempt to assault you about the DCCC ad with the flag covered coffins – well your responses were absolutely right on! Well Done
The Nefarious Leslie @ 31
Great question.
Top issues include immigration, war in Iraq, and lobbying reform.
Then there’s the Auburn Dam, which is strictly a local issue that has been around since 1967, still hasn’t been built, and won’t be. Nevertheless, Doolittle keeps trying, holding up flood protection for all of Sacramento.
Howie Klein @ 29
All right! Thanks again, Howie, for making this possible every week.
Good Morning Charlie Brown!
Our district here in CA-04 is in the odd circumstance that we have very little media outlets to get word across how corrupt Doolittle is and what a great replacement you would be.
The republicans in our district seem hell bent on voting against their best interests mostly because they have no clue what Doolittle has done. Do you have any planned TV ad’s this year to inform more “conservative” republicans that voting for Doolittle is a vote against their best interests?
Hello Mr. Brown. Thanks for taking the time to chat. I have a “big picture” question. Do you have any thoughts on how we progressives can not only defeat particular Republican politicians here and there, but go on to take down the conservative movement itself? Conservatives control the Federal Government and the media. How do we battle them in the long run?
Thanks for any input.
Hi Charlie,
Welcome. Interesting article on Doolittle, my hat is off to you as one old rotorhead to another for taking him on.
Do you have an view on the current republican wedge issue of immigration?
Thanks
JF
I was excited to read former GOP Congressman Pete McCloskey’s opinion piece in the Sacramento Bee yesterday, which I’ll link here:
http://www.sacbee.com/content/…..7042c.html
… and then ask you, Mr. Brown, whether you think this will help hard-core GOP voters vote for you, a Democrat, just this once?
We invited him to 6 debates, but he says he’s too busy even though Congress is in recess for a month.
We’ll keep after him, but we know that media is very interested in carrying these debates because they keep asking when they will be, and keep offering to host.
Will the local media bite on any “empty chair” debates?
People both want to support me, and get rid of Doolittle. His negatives are very strong among Dems and DTS. Republicans are increasingly embarassed by him.
We’re talking about uniting to solve the problems of the country.
Charlie Brown @ 45
Charlie, how would you describe your politics? How much common ground do you have with district Republicans?
EthicsIn Congress @ 39
The newspapers in Doolittle’s district recommended a “NO” vote on Doolittle in the primary. It surprised me, but they know.
Doolittle has a tightly run political machine in this district and that is why he is called Boss Doolittle.
Welcome, Charlie, and welcome to any of your supporters who are here because of the email you sent out. (I got it because I had already contributed to you, but I just added some more at ActBlue.) Every campaign should have its own Kiss Float. If you had to pick just one image of Doolittle, what would it be? Do you have a photo of him kissing Tom DeLay? Unfortunately, I don’t think you can count on a photo of Doolittle being arraigned before the election, although a girl can dream.
Ca4 Indepfor Brown (#48)– oh, Doolittle has the same first name as Emanuel! Who knew!
Have the endorsements you’ve garnered from other veterans, patriots who are also Democrats, made an impact on the voters there? I’m probably omitting some, but I recall that Wes Clark and Max Cleland have endorsed and, if I recall correctly, campaigned for you.
Do voters know about these endorsements and see their way to a Brown vote because of them?
Eli @ 46
I’m an ex-Republican. The Republican party left me. I realized in 2004 that I couldn’t even go into Republican events anymore because my t-shirts and bumper stickers. Supporting Democratic Candidates means you should become a Democrat, and I am proud to be one.
Pete McCloskey will be out here campaigning for me in the next week, there’s a lot of common ground issues we all agree on.
BarbaraB, the mug shot of Doolittle would make a great t-shirt
Love to see a photo of Doolittle with Abramoff in the CNMI.
I think the DCCC should help Charlie and do a Ralph Reed treatment to Doolittle.
There was a great photo of Doolittle and Kevin Ring with their wives at a movie opening – it was Planet of the Apes.
Pete McCloskey remains a hero to me because of his opposition to another, earlier GOP regime: tough work then, tough work now! I wouldn’t need an inducement to support your candidacy, Mr. Brown, but Pete’s endorsement carries a tremendous amount of weight with me and, I hope, others!
Thanks for chatting today, sir.
BarbaraB @ 49
Can I get an amen! ha.
I could do a custom shot of Doolittle if you guys want.
Hello Charlie. First of all, let me thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking on the challenge to defeat Doolittle. Really!
Where is your office located?
Howie, thanks to you as well for being our conduit to progress. I love the song and the performers and can’t wait to spread the word.
The SF Chronicle reported on Thursday that Diane Feinstein is the state’s most popular and respected politician, according to a new (non-partisan) Field poll.
I would hope that she has been helpful to you, Charlie, in your candidacy – Doolittle has got to go. If she hasn’t been as helpful as she could be, perhaps others of us from CA could “encourage” her with a little message of concern.
Jo Fish @ 41
My art seems to start a lot of controversy lately.
WOW, rounding $1,700 and rising!

================================
Had Enough, California Congressional District Four?
================================
maybe Doolittle just expects you to hire his wife to arrange the debate events?
Charlie: Since your district is so spread out, I would imagine that you are using alot of direct mail to communicate with your voters. Ned’s FFN program is a very progressive way to take direct mail and make it personal, driving up response and participation rates. Same with YouTube Vlogs.
Have you looked into some of these approaches?
Howie, read the Boss Doolittle article, there is a link to it on the Dump Doolittle blog the link is on the list of links on the right side. It will give anyone interested an idea of what the district is about and what Charlie is dealing with.
Doolittle’s main campaign sign is: “We Stand with Congressman Doolittle.”
The picture to go with his signs are DeLay, Cunningham, and Abramoff’s mug shots–waiting for one more?
JoFish@ 42-it’s a great day when a Squid can support a Zoomie!
Peterr @ 59
So many messages to reach Senator Feinstein with — one hopes she’d just stay out of Arnold’s photo-op-helicopter this year, for starters!
Adam from DownWithTyranny @ 57
In an orange jumpsuit, maybe? Or, as Howie suggests, a “mug shot” with nice little numbers across the bottom? It would be a sort of preview of coming attractions. Heh.
Charlie, tell the folks here how you knew there was no WMD in Iraq.
Peterr @ 59
I would encourage everyone to contact their representatives to tell them to support this campaign>
Everyone lives in John Doolittle’s district.
Charlie, how are you focusing your reachout efforts? Are you using a lot of direct mail, as Twisted Martini suggests at 64? And other than donating, how can those of us who are in the area best support your campaign?
Obviously, you need boots on the ground for door-to-door, phone banking, etc. – but does the campaign have any special unmet needs that the FDL community might be able to help out with?
Charlie,
First off, your district is beautiful country. Secondly, do you think the conservatives in your district are becoming dissolutioned with the Ripofflicanns that sing the same old song but always end up serving coporations. That can’t be good for your folks.
P.S. Thanks to ActBlue and FDL for making it easy and safe to make a small contribution today. Go get em Charlie!
BarbaraB @ 69
How about w/o the orange jumpsuits, but instead have money coming out of pockets, lapels, etc… It is the money and Doolittle is stuck on money, he loves the stuff. He’d sell America for a profit to himself.
An Orange jumpsuit isn’t a bad idea, for the record, every prison art we have done (per Howie’s request) has come to pass. Every prison shot of a right wing repug we did was done before they were charged with anything.
I will do an art of him per all of your requests. Tell me what you would like, these ideas are great.
Kinda like Babe Ruth calling his shot…
Ca4 Indepfor Brown @ 70
Mid 1990’s I served two rotations in Saudi Arabia coordinating Airborne Reconnaissance flights over Iraq’s “No Fly” Zones. Sat in on the General’s briefings every day, and we would talk about what would be bombed if we went to war the next day…and no one was worried about WMD, because the military intelligence community knew that those programs had been dismantled.
Too bad the politicians didn’t listen to the military. That’s a big reason why we need more military vets in Congress. People who have been in war, hate war. Sometimes it’s necessary, but the war in Iraq was not.
I have also talked face to face with Scott Ritter about the flights I scheduled in support of his mission as a UN Weapons Inspector. We are in total agreement, from 2 ends of the spectrum, that sanctions and inspections were working.
Just ran to the pc :(
Have you talked about the training being given today and tomorrow?
*ilson46201 @ 63
My wife and I both quit our jobs to campaign full time. It’s that important to us.
She and I are both in agreement…we promise never to be paid lobbyists.
Is this part of your campaign, or is it kind of off-point? Is there anything you could do from a House seat to advance this uncomfortable (for the Republicans) truth?
Charlie, your son Jeff is an Air Force pilot, correct? Is he still stationed in Iraq, and how is he doing?
Charlie’s son just finished his 3rd rotation in Iraq. His son flew Doolittle and Katherine Harris out of Iraq last winter. Doolittle was rude to the pilots and did not know it was Charlie’s son.
john at 79, no, not yet – why don’t you fill us in?
I’ve lived in this district (not anymore). It is filled with knuckledragging tweakers and “I got mine, screw you” republicans. No matter how bad Doolittle is, a Democrat will never, ever have a chance of winning in that region. I’d like to be wrong, but I don’t think I am.
Just checking google for headlines, this is from the Mercury News:
California congressman helped Abramoff win contract
That would be Congressman Doolittle, bribed much.
For those of us who don’t “know your district,” sir: Is voters’ immigration concern hypothetical or is there a real impact that voters see in their daily lives? In other words, what’s driving the immigration issue for voters in CD-04?
Thanks.
Hi Charlie,
This is John from SFD ,you’ve seen me at the meetings.
BTW I love those editorials you gave to the Oroville paper and the Grass Valley paper
Eli @ 81
It’s all about the constitution. I took an oath to support and defend it. Congress is supposed to be an equal branch of government that meets its oversight responsbilities. It’s time for real hearings, real accountability, and finding out what’s been going on the past 5 years–so we can avoid repeating these mistakes in our future policies.
Hiya Charlie,
Any chance the Gold Country Media newspapers (Auburn Journal, Roseville Press Tribune, and 7 or 8 more local newspapers) will endorse you for Congress? Seems that would go a long way to getting word to our local citizens that Doolittle is NOT a “conservative” so stop sending him to washington.
Thanks, Ca4 at 83.
Charlie Brown @ 80
This is a fabulous promise and should be made known far and wide. I wonder how many other politicians would be willing to sign on to this pledge?
Here are those editorials Charlie wrote
http://www.orovillemr.com/search/ci_4126710

Doolittle’s main campaign sign is: “We Stand with Congressman Doolittle.”
The picture to go with his signs are DeLay, Cunningham, and Abramoff’s mug shots–waiting for one more?
==== I will do an art of Charlie’s suggestion
“Constitution” and “accountability” are two of my favorite words.
Rushton @ 85
Rushton, I do live in the district. I’d like you to be wrong, too. And I think you are. The tweakers will make it a squeaker, but Charlie Brown can win the day.
Adam from DownWithTyranny @

Here is an idea:
picture of Abramoff, Ralph Reed, DeLay, and Doolittle in the center. Have money bulging out of their pockets. Under them are images of sweatshops, casino, words “Forced Abortions”, “Children in Sex Trade”, “sweatshops”,
Another:
Doolittle and Abramoff with money coming out of pockets, with the words “Made in the USA” forced abortions, minors forced in the sex trade, and then “It’s closer than you think, it is in your closet.”
Rushton @ 85
I think you will be very surprised come November. It’s important to note that on June 6th–60% of voters cast ballots for someone other than Doolittle–and he spent over $1 million.
I want to invite you to come back to see for yourself–plus, we’re always looking for a few more good volunteers!
Keep the faith!
-Charlie
Hope I’m not stepping on any toes, but if you’re in the area …
You can help Charlie take our country back
I’ll be there tomorrow
My son has had three rotations in Iraq, in Feb, Doolittle went over to visit the troops, check on what they needed, and get some good pr since it was the middle of the lobbying scandal.
Congressional delgation which included Doolittle, Harris and Shay got helicoptered from the green zone out to Baghadad airport, streets are ok for our troops but not congressmen/women.
Harris and Shay climbed on the C130 asking if anyone was from Florida or Connecticut, what did they need, etc. Doolittle just asked if he could sit in the cockpit — C130 is a cargo plane, not real comfortable, but there is a spare seat in the cockpit that is better than being in the back.
Crew couldn’t really say no, Doolittle came up, sat down, said hi to the aircraft commander, ignored the copilot, navigator, flight engineer, load master,– an hour later the plane landed at Talafar. As Doolittle got off the plane, the aicraft commnander gave Doolittle a message from the copilot “Congressman Doolittle, Charlie Brown and his son hope you had a nice flight”
Doolittle sat about 18 inches from my son for over an hour. Didn’t ask him his name, where he was from, what rotation he was on (his third tour in Iraq), what he needed – totally ignored him – guess a copilot isn’t important enough to talk to.
The whole crew knew who Doolittle was, that I was running against him. Jeff’s crew has contributed to the campaign. They couldn’t belief how Doolittle ignored them all —
Charlie,
When can we obtain new yards signs for the November Election? (mine was stolen 2 days after I put it up in May)
This is the most cheerful factoid for me:
Lovely hard facts like that show why it’s important to engage in the fight, that action can have a good consequence. In other words, this is not a quixotic quest, and the dragon can be slain.
I like your suggestion too, I think I will do that one.
Marc in Placerville @ 90
Hi Marc: The Auburn Journal (as well as the SacBee) endorsed me for the Primary, and i feel very good about prospects this fall–as well as with the GV Union and other papers in the District. That’s because we’re on the right side of issues that matter most, and we’re not shy about saying what we think. John Doolittle seems afraid of the press these days.
And, BTW, Corruption is NOT a conservative value!
The Republican who ran against Doolittle (he was connected to McCloskey) got 34% of the vote. That has never happened before. I have been speaking with some loyal repubs and they will not vote for Doolittle because of the corruption. They found out because I talked to them about it.
Doolittle is nervous.

Money is not destiny. It’s certainly a big help, but ultimately a good challenger facing an awful incumbent just needs to have enough money to get the word out.
And, BTW, Corruption is NOT a conservative value!
Just a Republican one.
Ca4 Indepfor Brown @ 105
The Republican who ran against Doolittle was Auburn’s Mayor, Mike Holmes
“It’s all about the constitution. I took an oath to support and defend it. Congress is supposed to be an equal branch of government that meets its oversight responsbilities. It’s time for real hearings, real accountability, and finding out what’s been going on the past 5 years–so we can avoid repeating these mistakes in our future policies.
“
You are on the right track, Charlie. We need to get America back where it belongs. I can’t wait for you to get rid of Doolittle and start undoing all of the wrongs that Bush has done over the last six years. When you are elected to represent us in Congress, would you please support impeachment proceedings in January. It’s time for a turn in the right direction.
Adam from DownWithTyranny @ 103
Read this article and I am sure you will get ideas!
Sorry I’m late to the party …
has anyone given the link to Pete McCloskey’s article yesterday in the Sac Bee about why we need to elect Democrats to take the place of corrupt Republicans … especially Dollittle?
Rushton @ 85
The demographics in this area have changed considerably in the last few years especially in the Roseville, Rocklin and Lincoln area with a lot of Bay Area transplants–this is true in Nevada County as well. I’m hoping that this change will affect the upcoming election. I think the biggest problem in this district is extremely low registration. We need a strong effort to register and GOTV.
Charlie, I’m one of your Nevada County volunteers. I’m proud to work for your campaign. Sending more $s your way now.
Something funny happened there in the comments. Comment 98 at 12:02 is from Charlie Brown.
Comment 100 at 12:07, about his son’s flying the Congresscritters, is from Charlie.
Comment 104 at 12:09 is from Charlie Brown again.
Are you commenting under two IDs, Mr. Brown (which is no problem) or has someone impersonated you at comment 100 to tell the story about your son?
Just curious, our FDL moderators can research this as well.
Charlie at 99 – Just like Mr. Bush, it seems, Doolittle is happy to use the troops as a publicity prop but doesn’t actually care about them.
John in Sacramento – looks like the Sunday training is a week from tomorrow, rather than tomorrow?
Charlie,
Can you have Todd Stenhouse (i lost his e-mail addy) get in touch with Brian who runs http://www.calitics.com/ The Calitics Blog (california politics). He has expressed interest in having progressive california candidates do a weekly or bi-monthly op-ed. Would love to see some regular blog diarys from you there. (I love the ones you do over at dailykos)

There are lots of incumbents who seem afraid of the press these days. Almost makes you think they might be ashamed of some of the things they have to answer for . . .
Almost.
My wife, Jan, is here with me, we’ve got two computers up to try and read/answer the questions, so she is helping. Had her type in the story since it’s a little long.
Charlie/Jan
Welcome, Jan!
Thanks Leslie @ 115 – DOOOHHH! (slaps forehead)
Thanks Ca4 @ 117 – I’ll read it
Hi Jan!
Everybody: Jan is very shy, but she’s a wonderful, nice person. I got to meet her a couple of weeks ago, and it was a real pleasure. Charlie and Jan are both “real people” who will be a great team representing us in congress.
There are lots of incumbents who seem afraid of the press these days. Almost makes you think they might be ashamed of some of the things they have to answer for . . .
Almost.
Shame is unknown to them. Calculation and cunning are not.
same I.P. address — the Browns are frugal with Net access too ! Good characteristic for public servants!
katymine @ 7
Thanks for your question. I think I already addressed the first two parts in other posts.
First thing we need to do is eliminate corruption–it prevents us from addressing the real problems facing people in this country–and we need to throw lawbreakers in jail.
Second, Real security for the country. Not fear, not feel good programs, no more “make it up as we go along.” Real security is about consistency, balanced with protecting individual liberty.
Third, responsibiliy. We have to keep our promises–to veterans, to educate our children, to seriously address healthcare in this country, and to make energy independence a reality.
Hi Jan! Great to have you with us as well.
Hi Jan!
I enjoyed giving you the paperwork in Grass Valley.
hi, Jan, thanks for pitching in!
Courage and best wishes to you and yours in this fight, and highest praise for your son.
And of course if you scroll back up to the picture you’ll see Max Cleland who also endorsed Charlie
My favorite line of the whole article. Severe gun control is what makes me wince when I have to vote Democrat. Disarming the public reeks of totalitarianism.
Hiya Jan Brown!
Make sure Charlie gets a good shoulder massage a couple times a day to relax him. It’s going to be a long difficult Autumn.
(i get an extra cookie at the next open house for that one charlie!)
Welcome to Firedoglake, Jan. Having a candidate’s wife on is a first for us. I like it! Especially because Doolittle’s wife has become an issue after being exposed as an integral part of his crime machine
D. Mason @ 130
Agreed…Charlie
Ca4 Indepfor Brown @ 83
In fairness to Doolittle — and man do I hate that impulse — anyone travelling with Katherine Harris would be snappish. I’m surprised he and Shays weren’t gibbering. (Floridian here.)
The art I am going to do is per Charlie’s suggestion:
“Doolittle’s main campaign sign is: ‘We Stand with Congressman Doolittle.’
The picture to go with his signs are DeLay, Cunningham, and Abramoff’s mug shots–waiting for one more?”
Hi, Charlie, I like your emphasis on corruption and security. These two need to be linked more often, because when a military or intelligence contract goes to a congressman’s friend instead of the best qualified or lowest bidder, they’re not just stealing, they’re selling out the country’s security for their own benefit.
$$ update — we are only $85 away from breaking $2K!!
Howie Klein @
133
Doolittle’s wife is his most expensive campaign expense. But here’s the kicker, it is turned around to become their INCOME!
Exactly, Howie — this is how Democrats manage their marriages, among those lucky enough to be privileged to legally engage in them…. *g*
Do the Browns find there’s moral outrage at Mrs. Doolittle running her consulting business out of her home and scraping 15% off every dollar hubby raises? I’m loathe to involve family issues in campaigns, but the Doolittles have already popped that cork, I believe.
What do his constituents think about the 15% racket the Doolittles have going on? Do they realize the rest of the world is looking at their Congressman and saying,
P.U. that stinks?
Redshift — I agree with you. Wouldn’t it be great to see an inquiry into war profiteering like Truman Commission? But it will never happen with the Republicans in power.
Charlie thanks for answering my questions. Met you at Yearlykos..
What is your stand on the Iraq War?
Are you with the Murtha plan vs Kerry plan?
Have you been endorsed by DFA and/or PDA?
Charlie @ 134 and D. Mason @ 130
I’m with ya, I’m a member of GOA (Gun Owners of America) and DU (Ducks Unlimited) and been a hunter for … oh, 25 years
And a democrat (small d)
laser-like, our katymine, with the on-point questions….
Redshift @ 136
Remember that story about the very-connected defense contractor selling the Army crappy body armor? And the many ways in which Halliburton has been shortchanging and overcharging the troops?
Charlie Brown @
126
Oh my, this is almost too good to be true. You bring us hope and inspiration, virtues we have been sorely lacking for far too long. Please always stand by your principles and you will have a wealth of public support.
Linda R (#141). Robert Greenwald let me see a rough cut of IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS a couple days ago. I think there will be war profiteering trials once the Republicans are rooted out of D.C.
Charlie, what is your stand on the Israeli conflict?
How do you feel about the DLC Democrats in Congress? If you won, do you think you’d fit right in with your fellow representatives?
Howie Klein @ 133
Hi,
This is Jan, Charlie’s wife. We have been married 33 years and have two terrific kids. The story about Doolittle’s ride with Jeff came from me. I am also a veteran active USAF and reserves. I was appalled that Doolittle would sit in a military plane, with a crew of “our kids” and not even have the humanity to ask who they were. He did not ask their name, where they were from, how long they had been in a war zone and most importantly he apparently did not care enough to ask if there was anything, he as a congressman, could do for them in a war zone.
Your comments about Israel and Hizballah.
john in sacramento @ 93
These were great editorials, Charlie. I know you can turn things around.
if anyone wants to know what the neocon plan is, read this:
http://www.salon.com/opinion/b…..=whitelist
LindaR @ 140
War profiteering – If you got to the Vietnam Wall, go down to the ‘V’ where the last names are listed. I was in Thailand in 1975 flying rescue helicopters.
– Jan 28th, 1975, Brian Rye (USAFA 1971, a year ahead of me) and his helicopter crew died in a helicopter crash because a contractor lied about parts he was supplying – he made record profits, a helicopter crew died.
- May 13th, Larry Froelich and his crew died along with 30 Security Police becuase another contractor was lying.
I’ve got dead friends because of war profits and take it real personal.
Perhaps this has been linked earlier in the thread, but I thought it might be of interest to those who don’t yet get the depth of Doolittle’s corruption. And the pride he takes in it!
http://www.sacbee.com/content/…..7390c.html
Mr. Brown, thank you for challenging Doolittle. If you serve your constituents, you serve the American people.
I have been appalled at the swiftboating of our service men and women (being a member of a family whose men all joined the armed forces during their lives) and by the trashing of the Veterans Administration by the Bush regime. It’s time for those who serve and defend our freedoms to be represented. You and your wife have my support.
Every time Doolittle sends another of his “open line telephone discussion” e-mails to me I respond to them saying I refuse to listen to anything Doolittle says until he Debates Charles Brown. Any insider news on progress for the debates for us Charlie?
Charlie Brown @ 154
Wow, you ARE the real deal.
Jan @
150
I like that we have a Congressional wife/pertner who has a heart and truely cares about the troops. Doolittle has attachment issues and lacks any caring about humanity – money is his love.
LindyH @ 155
Charlie, have Doolittle or his supporters impugned your service yet? What is your response to attacks on your service?
There’s so much to like about Charlie and so much to dislike about Doolittle
Here’s a blog I did on the crumb-bum Doolittle
Adam from DownWithTyranny @ 148
Adam – I am intrigued by your blog. I clicked on the blog – the blog carries what appears to be Howie Klein’s excellent text above without any apparent attribution.
Of course, I have some Java functions blocked, so perhaps I am missing the attribution….
Howie Klein @ 147
Yes!
Adam – I am intrigued by your blog. I clicked on the blog – the blog carries what appears to be Howie Klein’s excellent text above without any apparent attribution.
I think DownWithTyranny *is* Howie’s blog. I’m guessing Adam is one of its contributors.
fwiw, the reply about personal knowledge of the corrosive effects of war-profiteering by corrupt contractors finally wrangled a contribution out of me …
Good luck !
kirk — Down with Tyranny is also Howie’s blog.
Hello again, Jan Brown and Charlie Brown —
I’d like to second the earlier recommendation with regard to the Friends and Family voter identification/mapping/contact tool used by the Ned Lamont campaign. Please check it out and consider launching something like it on your campaign’s website — we’d like to see this Best Practice duplicated successfully in campaigns coast-to-coast.
Thanks again for all you are doing to right the Republic.
kick murphy (#162), Adam is the sometime Art Director at Down With Tyranny. Today is his first visit to Firedoglake. I’m sure he’ll be joining us more in the future and doing some art work for Christy and Jane and Pach if they want him to.
Ed in Penn Valley @ 150
This situation shows what happens when our government “takes its eye of the ball.”
While I believe Israel has a right to exist and defend itself against terrorism, we have to address the root causes of terrorism instead of always just reacting to the symptoms.
The U.S. can and should take an active diplomatic role in resolving this regional conflict.
First steps are–Cease fire, humanitarian aid, and neutral peacekeepers. Most importantly, we need the involvement of all countries in the region in order to resolve what is truly a regional conflict.
Charlie Brown @
154
Good on you, Lt. Col. (ret) Brown.
My uncle flew two tours in Vietnam for the Marines. He survived – as you know, many others died form war profiteers.
I look forward to seeing you give the profiteers hell in a Congressional hearing – with D, CA after your name on the screen caption.
wow, *, moderating must pay really well! Now you’re contributing to candidates for Congress in far-flung districts. What’s next? *g*
Thanks for all you do, too, *.
Well, Ms. Redshift maybe unhappy with me that I made yet another contribution without consulting with her budget, but your comments about war profiteering were utterly compelling.
(Don’t get me wrong, I want to contribute to all our good candidates, but unfortunately, I have to pick and choose.)
thanks eli, redshift, and howie for your graceful responses to my ignorant observation – and your kind tolerance…
I see Charlie’s gone over $2000, with at least 25 contributions since the start of the chat…
Redshift, it’s good of you to contribute, and I understand about the guilt from not checking first!
I’m in the same dilemma, and always try to remember to put my wallet and credit card AWAY on Saturdays before my fiance gets home from school….
Charlie Brown @ 154
This is what inspires me about this candidate. This is why, very soon, I will have given the limit of $$ a person can give to a candidate. I am so tired of being cynical and defeated. Just personally, the truth is that Charlie Brown is someone worth believing in, worth supporting, and worth fighting for.
He came to serve. I believe this.
Would you seriously consider voting for deep cuts in the defense budget in order to pay for vital social programs? Thanks for communicating your positions on issues with us.
LindaR @ 163
This is why we have to get Bush impeached. No more lies. Not sure if you saw my post earlier, but would you support Bush impeachment once you are elected Charlie? This is really important to me.
Eli @ 159
Not really yet, just trying to misrepresent my positions using wedge issues in an effort to distract voters from ethical lapses and the gross incompetence of this Congress.
I expect the other stuff is coming–but we quite have an army of volunteers standing ready to get the truth out.
Thank you again to everyone for your generous support…it makes a big difference.
Another name connected to Doolittle is Kevin Ring. Remember this name. He was on Doolittle’s staff, then John Ashcroft’s. Kevin Ring then became part of Team Abramoff. He worked along with Abramoff, Scanlon, and Tony Rudy. In 2001 Kevin was the lead team member for Team Abramoff on the CNMI deal. He was also involved with the Indian casino gambling scandal and plead the 5th before the McCain/Dorgan investigative committee.
Reports state that Kevin is cooperating with investigators. Kevin Ring was the main go between concerning Abramoff and Doolittle. If we soon hear Kevin Ring plead guilty, it will be a very very dark day for Doolittle. Kevin Ring helped Julie Doolittle set up her business with Abramoff.
Skip McGillicuddy @ 176
It’s not a question of deep cuts. It’s a matter of priorities.
For example, this year alone, 9,963 “earmarks” cost taxpayers a total of $29 billion—none of which were requested by the President, vetted through public hearings, or subject to competitive bidding.
My personal favorite is the recent $700 million given to move a railroad so Casinos could be built in Miss, while cutting $430 million in emergency funds for veterans healthcare.
Have we passed the point where Doolittle might be replaced on the ballot by the GOP?
LindyH @ 156
I agree Lindy, I was raised in the military (Navy) and then became an Air Force wife. Hello Jan, I LOVE the fact you came with Charlie today and I really hope this starts a new tradition here to hear from more of the family members each week, Howie’s Saturday ‘meet the candidates’ has swiftly become one of my favorites. This is true democracy, our country needs it. Good luck on your campaign Charlie!
LindaR… Impeach Bush and get Chaney. Is that what you want?
Another story from son’s tour in Iraq. Charlie was on nationwide AirAmerica radio in Dec. Our son was already back in Iraq and could not listen so he went on line using the government computers he was required to use in Iraq. He was able to access AirAmerica radio site, the Majority Report site. When he hit the “fighting dems” button, and up comes a popup saying “Blocked by Military Sensors” so our son could not listen to his dad on the radio. So we asked him to check some other radio internet sites and guess what, no problem getting Limbuagh or O’Reilly sites. Can you say Fair and Balanced?
I agree with Linda.
Charlie you need to take this story to places like Sun City Roseville and Sun City Lincoln Hills.
This will resonate
LindaR @ 176
LindaR… Impeach Bush and get Chaney. Is that what you want?
You have to go pretty far down the chain of succession to arrive at anyone not reprehensible and/or incompetent. I think maybe… Treasury, which is around #6 in the succession.
Eli @ 186
So when the Democrats take over we will have another do nothing Congress messing with impeachment instead of doing useful work.
Eli @ 186
IF impeachment happens, they’d have to do Cheney first. Bush would have to pick a Republican the Democratic Senate would approve — my guess, Chuck Hagel.
Dave, holding corrupt public officials accountable is one of the most useful things a Democratic majority could possibly do.
Jean @ 177
That’s a frequent question.
As I said before, we have to take back the house and find out what’s been happening in this country. We’ll see where the evidence leads us, but the most important thing is to prevent a repeat of the mistakes of the past, and create a better future.
It’s notable that we’ve seen a big increase in the number of criminal prosecutions, guilty pleas, and convictions among D.C. politicians.
Politicians have to be held accountable for their actions.
93 days and counting.
Jan @ 184
Jan, this is appalling!
Ca4 Indepfor Brown @ 180
I’m hoping to see both Doolittle and Ney indicted before November (I’m in Ohio, but not OH-18). They’re both dirty as ***.
Dave (187):
And your point is? That we should not even try to get the Republicans out and Democrats in?
My feeling on impeachment is that it would be a powerful symbolic victory, but probably not much of a substantive one. Rather than pushing for impeachment right away, I agree with Charlie’s approach of pursuing investigations first.
If they turn up enough dirt and malfeasance, the American people may end up *demanding* impeachment, and then the Democrats and a few Republicans can oh-so-reluctantly, oh-so-sorrowfully bow to their will.
Jan @ 184. This issue of censoring our side of the story, our constitutional right to dissent, and blatant skullduggery really burns me up. To censor common sense and allow
pushhate mongering is a grave injustice to all of America. Do you end up having to email your son the downloaded files or CD’s of the interviews? It is disturbing to me, Jan, that our servicemembers’ free speech rights are violated, or perhaps I mean their “right to hear free speech.” This may be the reason, when polled, our servicemembers in Iraq describe their mission as directly related to 9/11, an event a huge majority of them believe may be due to Saddam Hussein.
Imagine the disappointment and anger these men and women who are bravely and valiantly serving their country must feel when the truth knocks. And the truth will get through, whether via Air America, Majority Report, or the United States Congress’ 2007 hearings on “How and Why We Went to War in Iraq.”
Incidentally, there’s a NYT article tomorrow that includes an interview with Brent Wilkes of MZM fame. Presumably, others have made you Browns aware of it, but I link it here to be sure you don’t miss it!
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08…..r=homepage
BTW, I have found that the communications I receive from your email team have always been polite, clear, and helpful. I’m not inundated with emails from your campaign, but I feel that y’all do a great job keeping me in the loop. Also, when I’ve sent things along, I’ve gotten great responses (once, surprising me, from Charlie himself!)
================================
Had Enough, California Congressional District Four?
================================
Charlie – you probably have some inkling of this, but win, lose or draw (and this one is a must-win in my book), you and the candidates like you that Howie introduces to us every week are pumping strength back into this country. Just knowing that there are still people willing to do the job (in a bleak situation) who have values and stand for something – just the knowing that makes everyone, and this country, stronger.
Welcome Charlie Brown.
If this adminstration can attack an agent undercover
with 20 years of experience whom we owe
a huge debt of gratitude and destroy her
career.They will stop at nothing.
This outfit has lost any moral credibility
they might have once had.
Thank you for your courage to serve!
Mike V. @ 193
My point is… work on issues that can reasonably get support, health care, miminum wage, etc, etc. Did you know that the Medicare Part D actually increased the cost for some low income recipients while giving many $ to the drug companies? Perhaps that isn’t as exciting but it sure needs action.
Jeff waited until he was out of Iraq to hear the interview.
He is anxious to come to DC for his Dad’s swearing in ceremony.
More on The Corrupt One
we are all looking forward to a BIG swearing-in party in DeeCee, Jan!
Thanks for all the great questions folks!
I have about 10 more minutes, and then I have to run to a campaign event.
Final questions?
We are hoping to have a Blue America party in DC in January for Charlie’s and our other candidate’s swearing in
Dave (198):
I’m sure that a capable, not-quite-so-corrupt Congress could multitask … at least a little bit. And, yes, as a disabled Medicare recipient, I’m well aware of the travesty known as Medicare Part D and this nation’s lack of nationalized health care.
Speaking of Medicare Part D, how’s the donut hole going to shape your district’s senior citizen vote? Do the demographix yield angry seniors who’ll need busing to the polls to reject Doolittle’s pickpocketing them for prescription drugs?
Charlie, a repeat of my question upthread in case you missed it in the barrage :) – obviously the two basic needs your campaign has are money and volunteers, but apart from that, are there any special unmet needs, for equipment, etc., that the FDL community could help your campaign with?
And of course there’s the outright looting of the treasury …
aka, The War in iraq
Yes, Charlie. Give us your thoughts about the Medicare Part D boondoggle, and health care in general.
Mike V. @ 204
Yes it could. Our growing healthcare crisis is a great example of this administration “cutting and running” from serious problems.
Doolittle wants to privatize Social Security, he was boo’d by constituents when he made his Social Security tour in the district.
Thanks Charlie and Jan for all your comments and information.
Say “Bye” to Rumsfeld for us Charlie.
The Nefarious Leslie @ 207
Thanks for all you are doing Charlie and Jan.
Dump Doolittle!
Thanks, Charlie and Jan, for taking time from your busy schedule to come and talk with us.
What a great thread! That was a nice chunk of time Charlie and Jan spent with us.
Thank you so much, and GO Charlie Brown!!
I think we Democrats need a new frame for “privatize,” incidentally. I think we should call it like it is: the GOP wants to END Social Security as we know it.
That would be a great take-back in the “debate” over the future of Social Security, in my opinion….
Thanks Charlie.
Thanks Charlie!
Thanks Jan!
Thanks Howie!
The Nefarious Leslie @ 208
I agree that this is an important question. What can FDL do to help in any way?
And I want to add my thanks to Charlie, Jan, and Howie for being here today, come back soon!
Oops, Jan, looks like your response got lost at comment #213. Could you re-post it?
Jan and Charlie, thanks for taking two and a half hours out of your campaign schedule to spend so much time with us and answer so many questions. We’ll be following your race avidly right into November. And we may have a little musical surpise for you in the next month or so.
Any thoughts on whether the Auburn Dam should be built?
TeddySanFran @ 217
Yes, Teddy, great point. “Privitization” is like Clear Skies or Healthy Forests … just more lying.
Thanks to Howie for inviting me to be a part of FireDogLake today.
Thanks to all of you for believing in our country, constitution and Charlie Brown.
Our founding fathers knew what they were doing when they wrote ‘We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility….”
I believe we can take our country back.

And thank you, Howie, Christy, Jane, and the *mods! This is one of my favorite FDL events every week.
P.S. Speaking of Ney (and paying the Pryce, heh heh)
Hey, everybody, before you go… does anyone have any idea where I can buy 1,000 CD-sized mailers at some kind of wholesale discount?
and if anyone hasn’t had a chance to listen to our new campaign theme song, here’s the preview: http://www.myspace.com/haveyouhadenough
EPU time, but I just now listened and that song is FANTASTIC!!! WOW.
CA4 – Thanks for the Kevin Ring tie – I hope Ashcroft isn’t forgotten when they rope in Dolittle. And it’s nice to see, years later, that the MI security report they buried has finally made it to Congress.
working on your request, Howie. Will advise.
Hi everyone, I just called the campaign office and got Jan’s response to my question about what the campaign needs.
Besides the basics of cash and volunteers, they could really use more office equipment: desks, chairs, computers, and monitors (they’re okay for phones at the moment). So if any of you can help out in that area, it would be extremely helpful. Howie, can you maybe add this as an update to the end of the main post, to make sure everyone sees it?
Crossposting on the song – I think it was sending out vibes that it wanted to be mentioned. *g*
Howie,
Try this link as a starting point for CD mailer info:

What does “states’ rights” mean in regard to Brown? He said it — to me, it means racist. But that is something they used in the 50s as a code word. (As in, it is a state’s right to be racist, so F you nationalists who want to change it!)
Please tell me it is different now.
Oops. In that link, replace the space between “cd” and “mailer” with a plus sign.
any campaign can use lots of reams (or cases) of plain white copy paper…
“States rights” has a variety of code meanings — including opposing Federal civil rights laws in the 1960s. It’s a constant tension in a federal republic like the USA. In what context did Brown use “states rights” ?
WOW! (Raising my hand over here)
I agree. Great thread.
Thanks Charlie

Shell, please post a link or “Quote This Comment” whereof you speak, it’ll make it easier for us to discuss the quote you’re asking about.
It is there in the above article:
“I kept hoping the Republican Party would get back to standing for something… things I supported like a balanced budget, states’ rights, smaller congressional budgets and less corporate cronyism… I wasn’t happy when Rove and the faction that has taken over the Republican Party assassinated John McCain’s character and then Max Cleland’s and then Kerry’s. These people seem to have sold their souls.”
Oh, yea. Awesome song too
Wow, Charlie’s headed towards $2500. Incroy-fucking-abla!
we can swear now, right, the Browns have left the station?
ps Howie you’ve got mailer mail
Mary @ 231
There is a lot more about him, Doolittle, and Ashcroft. We have a lot on the Dump Doolittle blog and in the blog archives.
Doolittle has gotten Kevin some jobs lobbying for cities nearby. One is the City of Lincoln, at times it is the fastest growing city in the USA, it used to be a little dusty rural postage-stamp town out in the middle of no where.
The Auburn Dam is not about flood control, it is for water for the sprawling development that is going on here. The major flood issue in this area is due to creeks flooding developments during periods of intense rainfall.
States rights could mean for instance:
The assisted suicide law in Oregon
Medicinal marijuana in Ca.
… etc.
Please tell me it is different now.
States rights does have a history of racism and denial of choice ties, but all coins have two side.
Some of what is different, now, would be that it was States Rights that were violated when the US Sup Ct stepped in to interfere with the Fla Sup Ct in Bush v. Gore. The “new Republicans” have also trampled States Rights in the areas of euthanasia laws, medicinal marijuana or other drug legislation, State’s privacy, surveillance and electronic data protection laws, and a host of other areas where States have tried to expand, rather than trample, the rights of their citizens.
It has been a very disturbing anti-libertarian trends, by the party that supposedly once-supported states rights. While there is “code” involved, there is also principle. Charlie Brown indicated that he had once been a Republican, and I think when you look at the totality of his statment – that he want Goverment OUT of personal life/liberties areas (that would be, per my reading, State and Fed. government) – I don’t think there is a hidden issue.
Of course, I speak as someone who has also spent a small amount of time as a Repub. and been for States Rights when they are being used to broaden its citizens rights – but also strongly in favor of State and Fed staying out of a lot of decisions and have Equal Duty to all of its Citizens (as opposed to having gender, race, ethnic or religious govt bias). So I may be coloring with my perspective.
john in sacramento –
I live in Sacramento, too — but *I* am old! LOL I know what he means, but I am afraid that there are many in his district who are either old or from other parts of the country who think “states’ rights” means something else. And, truth be told, I am not THAT old — 52 — and I remember that term meaning something else.
I hope he changes the wording.
Of course no one tells us there’s a new Ned Thread upstairs
Mary,
Here is some research on Kevin Ring, Abramoff, Ashcroft, and issues of National Security.
TPMMuckraker has archived info. on this too.
Way epu’d but thanks again CA4 – I bookmarked your site.
Howie—the new song is great. That’s a impressive group of folks assembled to create a piece that should have some legs.
Your comment about CD mailers reminded me that you’ve commited not just your time, but no small financial commitment to this effort. Whenever I’ve opened my mailbox and been pleasantly surprised to see something from you there, I realize the weekly expense you incur just in postage.
Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
with a current Washington DC administration that is notoriously grabbing a variety of dictatorial central powers, appealing amorphously to “states rights” is an appeal for democracy. It’s a call for “Give us back our government!”

We’re an internet site for dog gifts and supplies and we get all our mailing supplies from Uline. They have warehouses around the country, so shipping isn’t too steep. http://www.uline.com

And if you have an Office Depot or Staples account, just have them deliver it to Charlie Brown’s. No delivery charge when order is more than $50 at Office Depot.

The Auburn Dam is also about political pork.
I lived all my formative years just below Folsom Dam and Nimbus. Building these dams on earthquake prone territory, and so close to the San Andraes fault makes no sense to me whatsoever. Living and working in Placer County taught me nothing if not that it is loaded with right-wing reactionaries. Doolitle is a crook, and I dearly hope one day to read of his incarceration. Sure hope Brown carries the day!
As for sprawling development in the foothills and the flood-plain that is the Sacto Valley? That was one of the primary considerations in my choosing to leave the area. Too many cars, too many people and too much smog. And because of all this, you can’t see the stars at night anymore.
from the NYT:
Ho-hum, dominated by crazies. Another late night at Mack Folsom Prison in SoMa?
Gerstein is SUCH a tool. Nice photo in The Times, Jane. It’s especially pretty in contrast with the across-the-screen Dowd visage.

I’ve had the pleasure to meet Charlie as he’s been traveling this district, and I’m very happy to report that he’s exactly the kind of person we need in the United States Congress. His views on universal health care; getting the United States out of Iraq, a woman’s right to choose, energy policy, the environment etc; etc. etc. are progressive and enlightened.
And Charlie is also the kind of candidate who can win in this ordinarily Republican leaning district. A smart, dedicated, straight talking, “regular guy” who’s Air Force background and experience in the original Gulf War lends his voice against the current war particular weight.
Compare Charlie against the man he’s challenging, John Doolittle, a virtual poster boy for everything that is sick about American democracy in the Abramoff/Rubber Stamp era: the corruption, the entrenched special interests, the tainted money, lack of accountability, lack of leadership, etc; and you can see why Charlie is soooo deserving of our best wishes and (don’t forget) our financial support.
Go, Charlie!
I found this video of Auburn on You Tube. Someone put it together for their father. It has photos of the trails along the American River. I have hiked these and they are close to my home.
If Doolittle has his way with the Auburn Dam, all that you see here will be under water.
They did this to country music, so if is too much, turn the sound down and think of the sound of the river.
Ah… yes. The American River. Used to spend a lot of time at Chili Bar…
While Charlie Brown’s credentials seem impressive, nowhere was I able to locate in the above comments, unless I missed it, Brown’s stand on what should be the most important issue of the day and that is withdrawal. What makes this strange is that he has a son who is in the military and has been to Iraq. Is this candidate for staying the course [or, more appropriately, for staying and dying] or is he actually in favor of withdrawal? Does he wish the troops to be out in a year’s time, during which time hundreds of Americans could wind up very dead and hundreds more returning to this country grievously wounded or does he favor that those troops be withdrawn as rapidly and as quickly as possible? I saw that someone had directed the question of withdrawal to him but I did not see where Brown actually answered the question. The hot button issue of the day which Mister Charlie Brown amazingly chose to ignore.
On the American River, YouTube footage:
(Doolittle hates it)
River running high
Kayaking North Fork
White Water Rafting the South Fork
(I’ve done this and lost a contact to the river at the rapid called Satan’s Cesspool)

Sorry to come to the party late. I’ve been photographing Charlie Brown at several events in northern California, including his primary night victory celebrations:

Probably too late to be noticed by many, but what the heck.
