I think you may be misinterpreting Lautenberg’s intentions. I think Sen. Frank is pretty confident that Nomentum is gonna lose, and he’s gonna lose by a reasonable margin, and I don’t think Lautenberg’s gonna support any sort of Indy run. So this is his way of breaking it to him gradually, sort of like the way you would tell your petulant 4-year-old that his pet turtle passed away…

I beg to differ; after Watergate, both parties broke down, and politics became every politician for themselves.

Jimmy Carter? Elected as an outsider, running against Washington.

Ronald Reagan? Elected in a landslide, running against Washington.

GHW Bush? Won as an Anti-Tax, Anti-Establishmentarian opponent of a Tax and Spend LIBERAL.

Bill Clinton? Won as a communitarian outsider, with a big assist from the Anti-Establishment Ross Perot.

The American Political Parties broke down after Watergate; in the wake of this breakdown, every candidate became a free lancer, running against Washington and their own party establishment.

On the GOP side, the barbarian wing nuts were poised to take over; when GW Bush recognized the potential of the wing nut / evangelical durable majority, the arc of power was set in motion.

On the Democratic side, all candidates were free lancers, sucking the K-Street tit, while mouthing empty platitudes for the rubes back home, while they did K-Street’s NAFTA CAFTA bidding.

The pissed off Democrats, Nutmeggers and Netroots, are poised to mount Joe Leiberman’s head on a pike — as a lesson to the other Dems, who play GOP Lite corporate footsie.

And that — in a Nutmeg Shell — is how we got here, and where we are at.
