I was typing my little fingers to the bone telling people to come to Connecticut for the big GOTV push for Lamont when the Kevin Rennie piece came out, essentially saying "Lieberman’s throwing in the towel and trashing his field staff." The bullshit meters went off instantly. Shortly thereafter Dan Balz ran the same thing in the WaPo, and we all know their talent for right-wing stenography.
It felt like an extremely Rovian attempt to suppress and discourage the Lamont GOTV effort. If he’s going to win by a landslide anyway, and Lieberman isn’t putting up a fight any more, why bother, right?
Except according to people on the street, that isn’t what’s happening. Rather than take dictation from Marion Slimefels, we contacted folks who actually took the time to check out the claim. Maura visited the Stamford office for Lieberman this morning, and has this to say:
I drove by the LieberOffice in Stamford and even pulled into the parking lot to get a look at what’s going on, and it’s PACKED with LieberShirted people. Just as much or more activity than usual. I also passed two LieberShirted people on a sidewalk in another neighborhood when I was driving to the dentist this morning, so I assume they’re still out strong canvassing.
It could be he’s considering Stamford the Last Stand for Lieberman, but it seems unlikely that he’d still have so much activity here and none anywhere else.
And in Hartford, TrueBlueCT says:
I went to the New Haven office this morning and I spied Rosa DeLauro’s campaign manager — she loaned out her field people to Joe for the race. And they know New Haven better than anyone. The Lieberman kids were running in and out, "give me new lists" — they give them a street at a time. They go, they do the street, they come back, thumbs up, they go do another street. I saw 50, 60, 70 people coming and going. They’re not rolling over.
This thing is not over, not by a longshot. The internal polling of both candidates says that the race is much closer than the Q-Poll indicates, and it’s all down to the ground game now. Lieberman is trying to de-incentivize the Lamont GOTV effort with disinformation. If you care about a victory on Tuesday, get yourself to Connecticut.
Besides, it is one big fat fucking PARTY here. Starting tomorrow night we’re going to be meeting up every evening for drinks in in New Haven, and we’re having the kind of fun people have when they come together to do something vital for a really good cause.
It’s historic, it’s important, and it’s something you’ll always remember. Join us and kick some NeoCon ass. Watch the wingnuts scream in the wake of grassroots activists pounding the pavement.
Twenty years from now, you’ll want to be able to say you did this.

Wow,wish I could make it.Go Ned!
makes me wonder if debold voting machines are being used
are they?
I don’t need to wait 20 years-I’m already glad I helped. Thanks for being there and giving us updates,Jane!
Go Jane! I’m with y’all in spirit and anxiously following this via the internet. Go NED! Go Roots!

Wonder what kind of lies those little young Republicans are spreading….
I spend lunch hourse at Lamont New Haven phonebanking. NO ONE is resting on their laurels. Not at all. And my own personal calling results tell me this thing is neck-and-neck.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!
And be sure to bring your cell phones, with your unlimited weekend minutes!
There are effectively three possible outcomes of Tuesday’s vote:
1) Complete victory for Lamont. Complete victory means that a defeated Lieberman decides not to file as an independent candidate on Wednesday.
2) Partial victory for Lamont. A partial victory means that Lieberman was defeated but he still files on Wednesday.
3) Catastrophic defeat for Lamont. Any defeat, by however small a margin, will be catastrophic at this stage. A victory by Lieberman will be regarded as a great turnaround in the space of a few days, a resounding defeat for the anti-war Democrats. There will be no moral victories this time.
I can’t say exactly what would make a defeated Lieberman decide not to file on Wednesday. The only choice for the Lamont GOTV workers is to do everything to maximize the margin of victory, realizing that with door #3 a disaster is still possible.
go Jane, go Maura, go Ned, go Roots!
I have to say it’s pretty entertaining watching the shallow Right end of the blog pool fall all over themselves to carry water for Lieberman. I guess they realize whose side Lieberman’s on as well as we…
This is in the top post at http://www.nedlamont.com:

Don’t forget that Kevin Rennie is a former Republican state senator and representative.
Go forward…
O.K., so Lieberman has to be really really desperate to pull a dumb stunt like telling WaPo a lie about giving up on GOTV. And so Liberman lied and really does have a hopping GOTV operation. What are things like at Lamont headquarters across the state? Are people turning out in droves to canvass? How is that going? Have any lessons been learned since The Perfect Storm in Iowa? If so, what?
Is there a there a ranking of offices vs need for help? Jane has fired me up for a road trip.

This CT.granny will be at the polls voting for NED early Tueday morning & glued to the TV the rest of the day Thanks FDLakers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

BTW I heard that pretty much everyone in the VT DFA office is in CT on the ground. If the SICU 1199 union puts out a call for their union members in NY to come up, that would be large.
God, I wish I could be there. I’ve sent all the money I can and asked every single person I know if they have any friends or family in Connecticut (even my clients) to go to Ned’s site. Being able to come to FDL and keep up with everything means a lot. Thanks FDL and to all who are doing the hard work there on the ground. I’ve got butterflies here in Arkansas!
Joe’s been lying non-stop for weeks now. Did you hear him on Ed Schulz today? Supposedly he’s been unhappy with the way the war has been going since 2003. And he told the president so!

A victory by Lieberman will be regarded as a great turnaround in the space of a few days, a resounding defeat for the anti-war Democrats.
I don’t know about that necessarily. The cries of anti-war Democrats are not exactly a deafening chorus. Not yet, anyway.
Oh I wish I could be there. But I’m off Sunday on a family camping trip to the north woods of Maine.
And geez, much as I love the drenching quiet, the loons, the kayaking, the campfires at night and long starry walks with my son, I am going to be without news for a week. GAK.
Why do I always have to be away from FDL when stuff is going on?
So I’ve sent some more appreciation Ned’s way through ACT BLUE, and I’m sending all you front liners my heart felt wishes for success. You are fighting an excellent and important fight to take back this country, and no matter what happens, I am proud of you guys.

I feel your pain. I was way up in the mountains at a yoga retreat when the SCOTUS stopped the count. I had to slip out and drive to the nearest town to get the news. Yikes. It’s very strange to be out of the news loop when something really important takes place.
I have plans with my family this coming week that cannot be changed (b/c of a long TMI-type story). I have given what I can financially, but also want to say that if and when folks are needed in September or November, I have a few airmiles that are ready to fly to CT . . .

Me: Wow, it’s Senator Lamont! [falls to the floor at his feet] I’M NOT WORTHY! I’M NOT WORTHY!
Sen. Lamont: C’mon now, Fini, get up, you don’t have to do that. I was just stopping by to say thanks to everyone at FDL for helping me rally support for the Iraq Accountability Hearings Sen. Feingold and I are sponsoring this week.
Me: Man, that’s awesome Senator, just think, this time last year you were thought to be neck and neck with former Senator Joe Lieberman, the new Pfizer lobbyist in DC. Who knew you were gonna land the nomination in such a landslide then go on to win the election so handily? You’ve been doing a great job since you got to DC. Is there anything I can do to help you?
Sen. Lamont: Yea there is, keep emailing Evan Bayh for me like you have been, I understand he’s developed a blogger problem in Indiana, you wouldn’t know anything about that would you?
me: Uhhhh, me? Uh, no, I dont write on my blog much, but I do know some cranky folks in Indiana who have taken to calling him the Lieberman of the Midwest. I’ll tell them to keep it up.
Sen. Lamont: You do that Fini, and tell Donita this week’s Spin I’m In was fantastic!

Sure. The story was planted to try dissipate the motivation of Ned’s supporters.
But anyone who plays smart has more than one reason for doing anything.
This story also gives Holy Joe cover when he loses BIG. He will say that his people didn’t come out this time, but they WILL come out in November. He has to convince his money guys that his cause is not lost. Big money only backs winners.

Jane, you simply can’t promote yourself with photographs like this. You’re campaigning for Lieberman, not Playmate of the Year.
But, quite frankly, I will vote for you. The picture in the Times did not do you credit, but you were still incredibly hot.
Everybody who has had their heart broken when their favorite team loses to a last second shot, walk-off home run or hail mary pass (Michigan- Colorado, 1994, AARRGGHH)knows that the game isn’t over until 0:00 is on the clock. And Joe’s got the Rethugs as clock operators.

timewarp @ 51
Well, I thought of that, but in the campaigns I’ve worked in, the campaign is way too close to the ground to be able to get a wide view.
Kind of a forest and trees thing.
I was wondering if the Q-Poll has obvious flaws, or is it too liberal in who they think will vote, or what?
Everybody who has had their heart broken when their favorite team loses to a last second shot, walk-off home run or hail mary pass
Boy, you said it. I keep thinking back to the 2004 election and how sure those of us in WI were that Kerry had it in the bag.
Still, it really feels like there’s something in the air this time. The “conventional wisdom” seems to be lining up behind a Lamont win and, later, a Democratic take-over at least in the House. Hard not to be cautious, though.

Did y’ll see this on Kos about the LieberTHUG Goodsteins past…UNBELEVABLE
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..61530/9066
———————————————
It turns out, this recent flap isn’t the first time Goodstein’s been in hot water. Way back in 1983, Goodstein — then a lawyer for the doomed Mondale for President campaign — “surreptitiously took” a notebook from a Philadelphia office in order to hide the nature of the campaign’s scheme to use rather flimsy outside organizations to evade fundraising laws. The action was disclosed in a 1985 book and reported in the Washington Post. (The notebook was returned soon after Goodstein took it, the paper reported; the FEC discovered the ruse, and Mondale — after losing 49 states to Ronald Reagan — paid over $379,000 in fines.)
I seem to recall a few days ago reading that 80% of Lieberman’s money came from out of state. Can this be true? Anybody got a link?

we’re sticking on loserman’s case intil they toss his body over the side (in a political sense)

Many argue that we can only rectify the wrongs done in the Iraqi prisons if Donald Rumsfeld resigns. I disagree. Unless there is clear evidence connecting him to the wrongdoing, it is neither sensible nor fair to force the resignation of the secretary of defense, who clearly retains the confidence of the commander in chief, in the midst of a war. The expression on Gen Pace’s face is priceless. McCain ask’s a yes or no question “Did you anticipate the likelihood of a Civil War in Iraq a year ago?” Pace tries to spin, and McCain pulls rank (officer get their commission from the US Congress, not the Pres) and repeats the question. Which in military talk (both my grandfather’s were colonel’s so I know how this works) is just answer the f*cking question.

Senator Clinton also needs to make her views clear on the Israeli/Palestinian question and to call on Israel to stop what they are are doing to the Lebanese people.

OOooooh, I have always wanted to conduct an orchestra. I have in recent years begun breaking the mold of my rock n roll/jazz/blues upbringing to branch into more orchestral types of arrangements for my works. Unfortunately my more elaborate pieces have more in common with John Zorn than say, Vangelis, Phillip Glass or other modernists.
I have a cinematic soul that begs me to focus and work on big compositions but I lack the discipline to maintain a decent pace, coupled with the fact I am lacking in substantial opportunity to showcase the works I have done anyway.

Interesting Imm…but in the military, there are rules about answering questions to Congress truthfully (and superior officers — same thing), and most commissioned officers take this to heart. But with Rummy sitting there (the proverbial pink elephant) Pace was in a very sticky situation and McCain knew it, which is why the question was directed at Abazaid and Pace and (noticably) not Rummy. Rummy is “allowed” to spin. Commissioned officers are not, because in the military it is considered lying.
If Pace or Abazaid had any conscience — or even ability as military strategists, they would’ve resigned already.

I love ya man, but KOS lives in Berkeley — about an hour away from me. That is how we dress here. Now you might say, “When on a DC show, dress like DCers” — but WHY? LOL
LindaR, if by cobbler you mean the biscuit-type topping for fruit, try this:
Heat your oven to 400 degrees.
Make your filling using fruit, a bit of flour for thickening, and sugar to taste. Add some lemon juice if you have it to brighten flavors. I also sometimes add a bit of fresh scraped vanilla or good quality kirsch if on hand. Put the fruit in a shallow baking dish and bake for about half hour, stirring to ensure even baking. While the fruit bakes, make the biscuits:
3 C flour
1 1/2 t salt
2 T sugar
1 T baking powder
5 oz butter (1 stick 2 T)
3/4 C to 1 C cream or buttermilk
1 egg yolk
1 t milk
Sift together all the dry ingrdients. Cut the butter into 1/2″ cubes and add to dry ingredients. Contintue cutting and mixing until mostly incorporated but there are still little chunks of butter. Mix in 3/4 C cream or buttermilk and stir very briefly just until dough comes together into a ball. If it seems dry, add more liquid until it comes together. Don’t overmix or it will be tough. Roll out gently until 3/4″ thick and cut into 3″ rounds or whatever shape you want. You should get 8 biscuits. You can gather scraps and re-roll gently. Remove fruit from the oven and place biscuits on top. Mix together the egg yolk and milk and brush the tops with the egg wash. Return to oven and bake for 15 – 20 minutes until biscuits have browned.

About the peach recipe, all I can remember is put the canned peaches (or fresh suitably sugared I guess) in the bottom of the pan, pat the yellow cake mix on top, add some cinnimon I guess, spread butter pats all over the cake mix and bake. Do not remember how hot the oven, but 350 is always a safe bet.
I however have the following ingredients written down on a piece of scratch paper here at my computer desk: 3/4 flour, 3/4 oats, 3 tablespoons butter, 2 tbs. oil, 3/4 brown sugar – bake at 375. Have no clue if that goes to a different peach recipe?
There, now, haven’t I been helpful? NOT.

Ok, probably not your reference here, but it just strikes me who Bush is:
He’s Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) in The Shining when he’s alone talking to Lloyd the Bartender about how NOBODY understands his parenting (read: War on Terror), how, when he dislocated his toddler son’s arm, it was “an accident,” just a few extra extra pounds of pressure per second/per second.
Maybe Bush will end up frozen in the topiary maze, and frozen forever in a sepia-toned picture with Mission Accomplished in the background. Midnight, The Stars, and You.
Stamford Advocate: “U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman vowed to launch the “most aggressive” get-out-the vote effort of his political career Friday, trying to make up a double-digit deficit to a political novice just four days before Connecticut’s Democratic primary.”
Maybe we can turn those Halliburton concentration camps into Neocon zoos. Round up all of those college Republicans, and put them on display as a teaching moment for future generations.

Theoretically, a commissioned officer is required to speak truth to power. The military is supposed to tell the Def Sec, the Pres and the Congress if things are not going well. As a former commissioned officer himself, McCain was setting a very stern tone in that regard. And besides, when so many other people (including former commissioned officers) were predicting the likelihood of a civil war in Iraq more than one year ago, their answers were quite disingenuous.
This is the tone being set for ‘08. Everyone is going to be cutting these jokers loose. It will be up to the Dems to be in McCain’s face with his disingenuous pandering to the Bushits in order to gain Brownie points with the rethug right.
Ricks claims that the military thanked him for writing the book and doing the job congress wouldn’t do.

Mary, thank you so much for the WaPo link at 3:52 and keeping us informed about Bush’s onslaught on the “separation of powers.”
DiFi has understandably been criticized here, but I wanted to point out this from her in the WaPo:

All the basic, non-flowery, cut to the chase questions got long pauses and heavy blinking, you could see the “how much can I lie on this and pretend with chocolates and flowers that it’s not a lie” It’s a very sad thing to see that in uniform. If I hadn’t had the reverse triple coming from the JAG officers testifying to the Judiciary Committee, it would have left you feeling pretty low about what it is that makes for a top military officer these days.
Honesty, competence, responsiblity, integrity etc. – those long pauses told the story.
There was another very telling one when Warner was asking about civil war and what our military’s mission and Rules of Engagement are supposed to be if there is civil war. Long pause, no real answer, – so how are the the troops on the ground supposed to get it right?

With all this going on with Rummy sitting in the middle, I smell the vultures out for him. The Rethugs are very very nervous about the 06 election, and they want a sacrifice from Bush. He doesn’t want to ever make such a thing (a word not in his vocabulary) but they are going to try to force his hand. When/If Rummy goes, so does Pace and Abazaid.
The real pink elephant is Cheney of course. his hands would be tied without someone like Rummy.
Of course, the other little drama would be that if Rummy goes, there would have to be confirmation hearings for a new Def Sec.
Dicey stuff in an election season, but the political stakes are very high. At least that is my fly by night observation.

raw story is the bomb;
RAW STORY
Published: Friday August 4, 2006
A massive, 91-page memo to Senate Republicans outlining strategies for “homestretch” campaigning during the August recess, has been acquired by RAW STORY.
The document, signed by Senators Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), reveals plans to focus Republican Senatorial campaigns on three themes.
Next week, Republicans will tout efforts to “secure America’s prosperity” through a variety of programs. Plans for small business health insurance pooling, spending reductions, increased domestic oil drilling, and “permanent death tax reform” are all to be pushed at the state level.
Mid-month, Republicans are expected to shift gears, focusing voter’s attention instead on a variety of values-based initiatives. “Democrats oppose preserving a clear definition of marriage, are blocking child custody protections, and have obstructed the confirmation of fair judges,” the document reads. “Republicans are committed to protecting these traditional values by fostering a culture of life, protecting children, banning internet gambling and upholding the rule of law.”
Stem cell bills, though vetoed by President Bush are also to be championed by Republicans, even as they promote a law preventing “fetus farming,” a practice lawmakers believe could one day result from stem cell research. Strangely, a section touting various types of stem cell funding set to be promoted by Republicans is followed by another section, headlined, “Setting The Record Straight: President Bush’s Stem Cell Policy Is Working.”
Also included in the Republican values push will be the Child Custody Protection Act, which would make “it a federal crime to circumvent state parental involvement laws by taking a minor across state lines for an abortion.”
Republicans then plan to spend the month’s remaining two weeks promoting the party’s efforts in regard to homeland security.
Approval of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ plan for new, court-martial-like trials for terror detainees seems to be a priority, as are funding for the US-Mexico border fence, employee background checks for port security workers and improvement of the national emergency alert system.
The section seems more concerned, however, with defending the Republican record on security, promoting positive statements by the Iraqi Prime Minister, and combating Democratic criticism. For instance, terror suspect surveillance is listed as a priority, and “liberal newspaper” reports about NSA wiretap programs are criticised, but future programs are not listed among other proposed laws.

Ya gotta think Cornyn’s hornin’ in on Theme Two…
Where was Rove? I’m thinking he had a VERY off day if somehow Rick Santorum – he of peaches and seersucker and falling polls – was put in “co-charge” of the planning.
Unless Santorum is a very good spellchecker.
In which case, we should invite him here.
Am I too late for the Eat-A-Peach Boogie? And yes, I did go to that concert back in the day. Shows what an old lady I am….
[This is my first time posting in the new-and-improved comments section, and boy, am I impressed! Hope I don’t make any tag boo-boos.]
I’ve been feverishly trying to catch up with main thread postings AND comments — you guys are all brilliant, inspiring, funny, and wonderfully irrepressible and relentless.
My prayers and good thoughts go out to y’all in the last days of this campaign. [Now there are two big events this year which break my heart to have to miss — yKos and CT! At least I can do the virtual phone banking, which is what I end up doing in my own neck of the woods in AZ anyway, since I can’t do the physical canvassing. Thank goodness for the technology which allows ALL of us to participate, eh?]
Will be on the edge of my seat through Tuesday night. Thanks ever so much to Jane (hang in there, lady, don’t let the bastards get you down!) and Redd and the whole crew, especially those who pay for plane, hotel, and high gasoline bills willingly, even eagerly, to save our Republic! All true patriots salute you in your efforts!
Joe and the rest of the thugs must go! We’ll save the Constitution yet.
[Am off to physical therapy now, but will be back later this evening to do even more catch-up…I’ve missed you all, but FDL is in my heart for sure. Best little niche in these here toobz.]

The late, great Pioneer Days. Ruined by a bunch of out-of-towners.
Hello everyone.
‘I’m leaving today, but I couldn’t stay away…’ Such a fine community of people.
:-)
And to the sweet, sweet trolls…One of the few things that gives me an amount of pleasure similar to the actual creative process, is imagining the perplexed looks on your little screwed-up faces when you see the works.
Enjoy the next few months
;>)
Kurt @296 – thanks for the hand. ACKK! I’d forgotten about The Hair!

I just don’t see it. Rummy is well-protected by Bush. Poppy tied to get him ousted earlier this year, and it didn’t work. Bush digs in his heels when he’s wrong, and that’s what I see him doing here. You don’t get much more wrong than Rumsfeld, after all.
As for Cheney, I don’t see him going quietly, either. Rove has been trying to shiv him since before the 2004 election. Their hope is that he just drops dead at some point, hopefully in late October.
Meme alert: The facist rethugs are now officially calling the war on terra the “War on Islamic Facism.”
brief irritation with some of those articles from upthread. Since when does an incumbent with 18 years in office and $10mill in funding get to be an UNDERDOG?
See ya, Darkblack. Thanks for the lovely parting gift ;-) Don’t stay away too long.

That’s another big misstep. It may play well with the right wing here, but it’s going to make the average person in the Middle East think we’re fighting a religious war. That’s not going to win the hearts and minds of the people we’re supposedly freeing.
timewarp @ 343
would that be the “Christian Fascist War on Islamic Fascism”?

Of course it is! But they don’t care, not one whit! I just finished a very quick scroll through the raw story pdf, and part of their talking points is to link their so called war on Islamic Facism to WWII etc. In other words, they intend to openly adopt the stance that we are in a World War (3 or 4).

Mary @ 323 –
Yes, exactly. The top level of the military has become like the top level of … I don’t know … WorldCom? Qwest? Enron? Disappointing.
But it explains why…
Maj General Geoff Miller (of Abu Ghraib and Gitmo fame) who took the 5th during a trial of one of the dog-handlers (I may not have those details exactly right) received the Distinguished Service Medal. He should have lost a couple of ranks and been court-martialed.
Even if the Rs are worried about 06 I don’t see Rummie or any of the generals losing their job. Too risky. They need them inside. And quiet in uniform.

Good, so then after the vote on Tuesday Leiberman can claim he would have won handily if Deibold machines been in place. Oh well.
I’d love to know who got Rummy to go and testify. How did that happen? And why? Must have been one hell of a conversation.
Hmm. Interesting situation.
First, nobody introduces product in August. We know that Rummy ain’t going to leave until after Labor Day for this reason. But does he fall on his sword before 9/11? or within the 30-day window of the election depending on which way polling is running?
Second, is it beneficial for Rummy to remain SecDef where he has full security clearance and protections from some prosecutions, versus having him on the outside where he’s more readily picked off?
Coin toss. It’s going to take some big fire power on the Repug side of the fence to push Rummy out of SecDef, or a major scandal on a scale bigger than anything we’ve seen so far.
Not that either is impossible at this point. Guess I’ll need to read that Repug playbook to see if they have a forecast…
The Lieber-aid-ers may have had to make up time in Stamford today, at least in the downtown area – about 10 hours of power outage yesterday closed smaller stores and restaurants including Mickey D’s and cut down any reason for pedestrians to be out slow-baking on the sidewalks. Or did they hit homeowners yesterday before dusk? But friends there tell me many apartment houses were as dark inside as a blackout in an air raid and even the library shut its doors.
hmmmm. did my “chamber pot” remark go too far? it was it too many nested frames?

I will use absentee here in R-Pinellas of the Banana Republic of Florida because the whole county system has proven itself sneaky if not outright mendacious.
I would volunteer for poll-watching except that I work for the state as one of the huge number of OPS employees who keep the agencies and departments running without benefit of benefits. I get no insurance, retirement, leave time, nor recompense for jury duty or voting, nada, and losing pay for that day if I can’t make up the hours. In the same week. Union? Right to work state and ineffectual union.

I am VERY proud of how sincere folks committed to a common goal can change the course of history (keepin’ my fingers and toes crossed)! Hopefully, the rest of the country will follow your lead, and challenge the current status quo in politics, that being corporate interests. We were numb from shock after the 2000 election, furious and depressed after 2004, so NOW IT’S OUR TURN!!! For the first time since 2000, I’m hopeful. Many heartfel thanks to everyone who has worked to usher in a new direction.
