Kevin Rennie (a columnist for the Hartford Courant) is guest-posting at Political Wire this week. I found this piece via Atrios, and there are a few things worth some dissection. To begin, there is the first paragraph:
Sen. Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) will shake up his campaign staff if he loses Tuesday’s Democratic primary to challenger Ned Lamont. Lieberman supporters have watched with growing dismay since the spring as the three term senator’s campaign has gone from oblivious to defensive. They expect to reap a bitter harvest in 6 days.
So, let me get this straight: first of all, Joe Lieberman is placing the blame for any loss squarely on the shoulders of his campaign staff? As though his own record, actions, and finger wagging had nothing to do with the shift in public sentiment?
That’s like the villain in the Scooby Doo cartoons after he gets caught pretending to haunt a house yelling "If it weren’t for all the people who inadequately stitched the seams in my swamp monster costume, those meddling kids would have been completely fooled. I, of course, bear no responsibility for the inadequate planning for my horror carnival scheme, my fake lighting trick, the cheesy faux cobwebs and spooky music record that skips at the worst possible time, and the fact that a high school girl in glasses can foil my plot week in and week out. Nope, that blame is someone else’s entirely."
And, honestly, are we to believe that the Lieberman campaign has just thrown up its hands and expects to lose — or is this just a big peddling of low expectations in the hopes that all of Ned Lamont’s supporters will buy the crapola and not work their butts off for the next six days? Well, I’m not buying.
But let’s read on, shall we?
Expect Lieberman to can anyone who was associated with 2004 Kerry campaign and replace them with a team of pungent veterans who will take the fight to Lamont. As Lieberman tours the broiling state, you can almost hear the gloves coming off in preparation for a fight to the finish in November.
Here we learn that Joe Lieberman hired a bunch of incredibly successful Kerry campaign consultants to run his really energizing Bus to Nowhere campaign concept? (Well, that’s actually believable, isn’t it? Next…)
But Joe Lieberman is saving his fight for after the primary? Clearly, that whole "I want to win the Democratic primary" thing had so much meaning for him. So the fight to the finish for him is (a) after he loses the Democratic primary, because what the hell do the Democratic voters matter to him when he has Republicans to look forward to down the line or (b) it’s a veiled threat that he’s having to lean more and more heavily on Republicans and…well, as an Independent, he’ll be able to vote however he pleases. (Because, you know, he’s such a Democratic stalwart, fighting on the ramparts for the party now, isn’t he?)
The last bit of the article goes into detail about how much monetary and other support Lieberman is getting from Republicans already. Which is what has me asking questions: is this article on the level that Lieberman is expecting a loss? Or is this something else entirely?
And what’s with the use of the word "pungent" to describe the potential new Lieberman staffers? Is that some sort of code for "stock up on the garlic, kids, because this one isn’t going quietly into the night?" Someone ought to let Chuck Schumer know that he’s created a monster…
UPDATE: When reading the comments, I sometimes have one of those "damn! Why didn’t I think of that?!?" moments. Reader jt has just given me one of those, piercing the veil as my tired brain could not, to see something very cleverly hidden in plain sight:
Rennie’s listening to someone trying to help Lieberman duck blame for staff departures. If Lieberman loses the primary and campaign (or staff) people leave, it’s probably because they believe in their party and don’t want to run against a Dem, not because Lieberman doesn’t want them around.
Spot on, jt. Damn! Why didn’t I think of that myself?!? Glad someone’s still caffeinated and ready to think.

Wowsah! NED…
I love Christy
(And I really dig old scooby doo (before scrappy))
Prairie Sunshine @
1
North dakota gals are # 1.
imm at 2 — yeah, Scrappy sucked.
FDL ROCKS!
Republicans love Holy Joe the Man O’God for one reason: he represents the sort of Democrat they’re used to kicking the snot out of on election day. A win for Lamont will mean the emergence of Democrats who’ll actually fight for something. That’s why hatemongers like Michelle Malkin back Lieberman.
And what’s with the use of the word “pungent” to describe the potential new Lieberman staffers? Is that some sort of code for “stock up on the garlic, kids, because this one isn’t going quietly into the night?”
I read it as “Republican”.
Ned
Christy
Jane
darkblack
Lieberman is The Creeper!
Now, as I was about to say…re Froomkin’s column today on Bush’s signing statements, H. RAP Bush–that would be Hizdishonorable Rogue Activist President Bush–should be slapped down hard by Congress on the signing statements. With more men and women like Ned in the Senate, we can look to our elected Congress to restore the balance the Constitution both authorizes and demands. We’re sure not going to get that balance from toadies like J-Lie. [Ever notice how he and George look like the bully and toady in Gene Shepherd’s Christmas Story just before Ralphie goes ballistic on them?]
On the road yesterday, I saw Colbert’s empty chair waiting for J-Lie. Wonder if he ever got back to that District Chair from the CT state convention?
Eli at 7 — I read it as “surrogate of Rove.”
Yay garlic!
(and yay Christy and Jane and darkblack and other strong women who fight the blood-suckers)
pungent staffers for a plangent boss !
Roverines? Roverites? Roverettes?
ROVERINES!!!!
*ahem*
Sorry. I haven’t even seen Red Dawn in over 20 years…
Coz, this place does rock, doesn’t it.
Christy, what the heck are you doing up this late??
It’s getting kind of exciting, is it not? :)
Go NED!
urban at 16 — I need a nap. *g*
Christy – shall I send Schumer my letter at his place or Ho-Jo’s? Oh silly me – I’ll send it along to both.
immanentize – 2 Me too on both counts!
“But Joe Lieberman is saving his fight for after the primary?”
That’s because the quagmire that is Iraq will be better then. As if.
Roverines? Roverites? Roverettes?
I have no comment on this. I am just passing it along for informational purposes.

Well done Christy.
Ned Rocks!
joe is a putz.
SharonW @ 20
Definitely Roverines. Hee.
I know, I know!
I think “pungent” is code for MEHLMAN. RGJoe’s going over to the GOP and Kenny-Boy (the live one) is gonna run the anti-Ned November crusade.
Rumor has it Ned way up in new poll out tomorrow. Can’t confirm, but if Darkblack’s graphic is all Joe has to run on 5 days before the primary it is small wonder.
With College Repubicans (of Karl Rove) penetrating Lieberman’s campaign–with Joe doing the bending over to welcome it, I think pungent this time means that we’re going to see the dirtiest, foulest last six days in a primary, ever.
It’s gonna be ugly.
Real ugly.
The only question is if it will be the political equivalent of Faces of Death: Repulsive, but fascinating in a twisted, macabre way. Or the grisly camp of Evil Dead.
We shall soon see. My bet: Some of both.
Let’s hope it’s Lamont standing in the end. I’ll even be happy if he looks at his wayward severed hand and guffaws, “Who’s—laughing—NOW?”, a la Bruce Campbell.
Roverines? Roverites? Roverettes?
I like Roverines, although it should be shouted Red Dawn-style.
Wordpress apparently doesn’t like it so much, tho…
This pungent remark could also be some ridiculous postering like “Boy have I got something on you, but I’m not using it just yet.”
Curiously though, I recall reading a comment today from one of the Republicans who served on the Greenwich Town Counsel with Lamont and he said that he couldn’t think of anything bad to say about Lamont, which he thought extraordinary because he thought most Dems were weasels.
Let’s not forget Lieberman’s role on the Senate finance committee when he prevented the SEC from forcing auditing firms from not to consult for the companies they audited. This was pre Enron. Time to go, Joe.
Somehow I get the feeling that Lamont is gonna kick Joe’s ass in November.
Goper’s Lament
Definitely Roverines. Hee.
[CHS notes: Hi, it’s late. And I’m tired. And I have prosecuted one too many idiots who thought that life was like a shoot-em-up video game. So can we please not even joke about it, because, as I said, I’m tired…that said, if Red Dawn is someone’s be all, end all movie, they really need to get out more. With other human beings who understand that Red Dawn was subpar, at best. Thanks.]
How about Rover’s Dogshit? Careful where you step…
Well, he has to make room for the republican advisors.
Okay, that two votes for Roverines, but excuse my ignorance, what is Wordpress?
Aw Jane, wouldn’t that be better than sex!
Not sure if you read my earlier post, but I was so happy to see firsthand the excitement on the ground over the weekend.
You’re part of history down there, doesn’t it feel great!?!?!
You all probably talked about this earlier, but I gotta tell you when I heard the NPR announcer cut off J Lie’s rambling this afternoon so he could take a call-in from Ned, I just about drove off the westbound lane of ol’ I-94. Whoo-rah! Ned, that’s who!
J-Lie’s getting a taste of the fighting spirit he never had the, erm, balls o’Colbert for himself…can only hide behind those minions so long…
Hope Rahm and the DLC and DSCC gang are taking notes [hi, Gabe], ’cause Ned’s showing ‘em how to get it done….
And a big shoutout back atcha, Rene.
That insults us hippie liberal Michigan Wolverines!

Cafferty on the Conyers Constitutional Crisis Report
This kinda explains the scrivening of RNC talking points.
When Cafferty called up the WH to ask them about the Conyers charges, they referred him to the RNC.
ROFL – is that an “hey, call my co-conspirator, they have more details than I do ” response?
Can we call the RNC to get Leiberman’s post -Primary loss campaign strategy as well?
Rennie’s listening to someone trying to help Lieberman duck blame for staff departures. If Lieberman loses the primary and campaign (or staff) people leave, it’s probably because they believe in their party and don’t want to run against a Dem, not because Lieberman doesn’t want them around.
Rennie writes: “Expect Lieberman to can anyone who was associated with 2004 Kerry campaign…” But there isn’t anyone significant in LieberDom who was associated with Kerry’s 2004 campaign. Whoever duped Rennie presumably thought this would make it more believable, given Lieberman’s well-known hostility towards Kerry, and the general low regard most people have for Kerry’s campaign.
Okay, that two votes for Roverines, but excuse my ignorance, what is Wordpress?
The application that “powers” FDL and its comments. It ate my first “ROVERINES!!!!” comment, and it also ate a couple of comments I tried to make from my cellphone on the previous thread (or else the mods were very unamused by my parody concern troll routine…).
Twisted Martini @ 31
Or, Rover’s little poops.
You are SO my type of FDLer LJ/A
Hey Christy- just caught your comment to me on the last thread. Thanks for another great article and a fun reference, apparently. Apparently, bec. I am clueless re: Scooby Doo. But, I still think TRex needs to be “talked down from the Malkin ledge” and do something lite and silly for Late Nite- I mean we could use some frivolity. My suggestion is here: (link provided for others who have not read)
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..ent-219967
The use of pungent could be something completely innocent, and completely obvious, to wit:
As soon as I saw it, my mind immediately zipped to the famous scen in Princess Bride:
Inigo Montoya:
You keep using that word. I do not think it means, what you think it means.
Which is very likely what’s going on.
jt- that’s very astute.
Imm- Was it you you mentioned that in an earlier thread? Man, you’re getting GOOOOD.
OT In stories in Haaretz, it seems that Prime Minister Olmert has given the army chief of staff Halutz until Monday to essentially finish his operations. Olmert anticipates the Security Council will meet Monday with a ceasefire resolution later in the week. Meanwhile the new plan to replace the old inoperative one is to carve out an strip of territory six to eight kilometers north of the Israeli border comparable to the old security zone Israel held before its 2000 pullout. Villagers in this area are being urged to leave. Can you say ethnic cleansing?
In more CYA over the Qana massacre, the Israel Defense Force (IDF) accuses Hezbollah of using the dead civilians as shields. It also says the attack “would have been called off had it known civilians were in building.” Ya think?
We are now officially in the end phase of what has been a thoroughly nasty operation without any redeeming characteristics.
Eli @ 41
LOL – I rather suspect it was something you said. I had no problem with it.
And we’re up to 3 for it, and one insulted Michigan Wolverine. :D
They think the primary, with it’s usual low turnout, will only bring out the zealots who’ll vote for Lamont and that in the general election the full electorate (the Silent Majority) will come out and vote for him. But, if he truly was a Democrat he’d support the primary system and support it’s winner.
urban pirate @ 35
No…
But it wouldn’t be bad :~)
Twisted at 37 — And that’s a problem because…??? (Sorry, just gearing up for football season. *g*)

Cozumel! Thanks, man.
Has Tommy Yum been around?
If it has not already been mentioned;Steve Gilliard basically told the Lieberman campaign to stick “The Picture” up their ass. He then hammered them for treating the A.A. voters as if they didn’t know what was going on. I have become a real fan of Steve Gilliard.

Not to mention, wolverine is an animal with a combative spirit. Rove is combination of undesirable traits that don’t usually apply in the animal kingdom.
Dung beetle, maybe.
Immanentize:
That’s really the only part of Evil Dead that I remember, because I loved the blatant pun taken to the absurd on all those cliches about death at his own hand, taking his own life, etc.
But I’m twisted.
Great write-up, Christy. Sounds a bit like J Lie’s now vamping Katherine Harris….
CHS, are you a Mountaineers fan/alum? Boy are we gonna have some fun this season…
Not to mention, wolverine is an animal with a combative spirit. Rove is combination of undesirable traits that don’t usually apply in the animal kingdom.
But Wolverines also bring to mind one of the most triumphally jingoistic movies ever.
The only problem with “Roverines” is that they would really like it, think it was a huge compliment — remember the righty Ben Domenech’s obsession with the film?
If Joe is going to be looking for new people, Katherine Harris just let several go. It could be a perfect match.
If Joe is going to be looking for new people, Katherine Harris just let several go. It could be a perfect match.
Probably doesn’t get much more pungent than that…

twisted.

I’ve got a great idea for Joe if he loses to Ned.
Leave the party and become a Republican!
Then you can fight Ned again on friendly turf.
Wow! I’m going to have to rethink all those bad things I’ve been saying about republicans. Turns out they believe in bipartisanship after all. They have a really a big tent, when you can get support for a Green Party candidate in PA and an ex-democrat in Connecticut out of your donors. I just had no idea.
Then again, maybe not.
I don’t get how someone who keeps piling up the Republican support can continue to bray about what a good Democrat he is…Republicans don’t support “good” Democrats – they Roverize them, swiftboat them and Willie Horton them in order to beat them.
Methinks Joe is going to get a real understanding of the meaning of “double-edged sword.”
Buckeyes rule! Bring back Woody!
(but not as a vampire – thinking re-incarnation here.
Woody’s first words upon his second coming? Hello, Columbus)
And my mom the OSU alum just found out her tickets this year are for the Michigan game.
Mounds of buckeyes smother writhing wolverines…..
Dang it – Twisted Martini didn’t say that – sorry for the misquote/typo.
It was meant to be my question to thunder.
And WHAT is supposed to happen when I hit edit? I can’t get it to let me into the comment when I hit it, even w/i my 5 minutes.
It’s hard being technostupid.
Jeepers, Jane is in local the news for that picture. I can’t understand why it is being covered with almost equal significance to Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton’s visit. But they show HoJoe whining about it. And this coming from a guy who passes out flyers at a church and leaves a long message claiming to be Lamont on people’s machines?
Eli @

Well, Joe is trying to inflate his campaign with new energy, Katherine has a huge warchest and is under a great deal of pressure to be more cooperative. Sounds like a match.
bill @ 64
I’m sorry but how delusional is Katherine Harris?
So CHS, does that mean you are collecting couches and other furniture to burn in anticipation of an undefeated season? (Just kidding)
In the famous, long ago words, asked of another less than admirable United States Senator by then U.S. Army Attorney General, Joseph Welch, I’d like to ask Senator Lieberman: “Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?”
Katherine has a huge warchest
Must… bite… tongue…
Hey! No insulting Wolverine of the X-Men by associating him with Rove, please!
Mary, I have no edit ability on my laptop either. It seems that my computer is creating errors perhaps because of the security related to the paypal button up top. I am still trying to suss it out. Edit works on my PC, not my lapper.
Hmm, well, if not Roverines, Roverettes implies cutsey empty-headed cheerleaders. Oh crap, don’t tell me, somebody here was a cheerleader, right? :)

Love the Red Dawn reference…from my lost youth.
We would have never guessed in those days that instead of Cubans it would be Saudi Arabians bringing death from the skies.
‘Rape Gurney’ Joe’s problem is he is now a member of the ReThug Party…has been for some time.
That would be OK if it weren’t for the fact that the ReThugs led by the Boy in The Bubble let OBL successfully attack us. And after that they’ve done nothing to protect us.
The opposite is actually the case. I’d bet there are millions of ‘folks’ on the planet who would actively like to destroy us.
Excuse me…
I meant to say millions more than there were when Bubble Head with the help of Madame SuperTanker and ‘Rummy the Dummy started killing ‘tehehists’ or folks they thought were terrorists all over the planet…indiscriminately.
And there was Holy Joe…applauding Bubble Boy’s every stumble, his every mangled syntax, his every moronic comment about ‘freedom’, ‘hard work’, and all the rest of the drivel he drools from his slack lips.
I just hope the good citizens of CT can see through Loserman’s lies.
I guess we’ll get to find out.
PKC @ 87
PKC–We can’t even get our FDL Fargo group together for coffee. That has got to change. Hiya to South Dakota.
I think Rove (and most Republicans) are actually the equivalent of the African Cape Buffalo:
Cape Buffalo – African game hunters consider the cape the most dangerous animal in Africa, for one reason: it’s got a nasty temper. The cape will charge humans out of pure malice, and its horns will inflict terrible wounds. When wounded, the cape buffalo will pursue its hunter until one of them is dead.
One of these days when I make my grand Laura Ingalls Wilder pilgrimage (yes, I loved those books as a little girl *g*), and I come and visit the Dakotas, we’ll all get together and have some coffee. I’d love it. :) Oilfieldguy and Teddy can tell you, I’m a lovely coffee companion…
What will appear will be a fellow in a fake wig and beard who seems to look a lot like Karl Rove, and a bunch of quickly promoted preppie imports from Princeton, New Jersey.
Heh. I posted this picture of “the Democrats’ new chief political advisor, Robert Karl” after they pushed Hackett out of the OH race…

I wonder if she ever was. She seems to live in a fantasy world.
If Lieberman loses the primary and campaign (or staff) people leave, it’s probably because they believe in their party and don’t want to run against a Dem, not because Lieberman doesn’t want them around.
It’s more complicated than that–but it’s true that any staffers who stayed on board would be tying themselves to Lieberman personally. Their future in the party would be at risk.
Moreover, it’s by no means clear to me that Joe’s independent run is a sure thing. Latest news indicates that he’s serious. Recruiting College Republicans is a pretty clear repudiation of his party. But when all of his big dogs walk away–and if he loses anything other than a squeaker, I think they will–it’s gonna be tough to put up an effective fight.

Anyway, Joe can’t be at fault if his campaign is going down the crapper. Like so many absolutists/dilettantes, he is never wrong. He is soooo misunderstood, no one recognizes his “genius.” And etc. Ad nauseum.
A bit concerned about the paranoia creeping into JoeMo’s dialogue (those bloggers are out to get me!), but that’s always the sign that somebody’s about to wig out for real. Somebody pass the popcorn. Without the diacetyl, thanks.

He’s also the guy who had an exclusive Lieberman appearance given to him for this Sunday, which has been cancelled so Joe could be on Meet the Press instead.
Lastly, he’s the guy that’s become a target for all the CT Blogs, who “urge” him to stop getting dicked around by the Lieberman spin team and do his fucking job.
In other words, he’s an access whore.
That’s why it’s on the “news”

Sorry for the OT but it is very interesting. Especially the last half hour.

Maybe it’s just me, but if you’re recruiting College Republicans, you’re not terribly “independent”. The whole thing looks like a big head-fake to me. If you were the Republican challenger, who would you rather run against: A hideously-wounded Joe Lieberman, or an up-and-coming Ned Lamont? Is it any wonder they want Joe to win the primary?
Johnny at 142 — Is that the Morgan Spurlock series? I didn’t know it got renewed. I loved that last season — he did a fantastic one on trying to live on minumum wage that ought to be required viewing for anyone who has never had to live on ramen noodles for days and days on end. (Plus, he’s from WV, so I pretty much have to like him, right? *g*)
hi wordpress gurus -
my browser shows four “refresh comments” buttons and four “preview” buttons.
the browser (firefox 1.5 on OS 10.4.7) adds another set of buttons every time i return to this fdl page after using the browser’s “back” and “forward” keys.
pushing a single “refresh comments” button leads to four happy spirals twirling on the page awaiting the new comments.
…a sort of dervish welcome wagon…
Okay, PKC, I’ll see your Corn Palace reference and raise you a Wall Drug Store. And a trip to Keystone in the winter, when NOBODY is on the tourist trail except crazy locals.
There ya go. ;)
Teddy at 143 — Shhhhh… (mwee hee)
Mr. Littledog, a long-time reporter at the state capitol, agrees that news outfits do, in fact, get the polls ahead of time. The terms of the embargo vary, but if they want a paper to cover it, they need to have it ahead of time.
Otherwise, When the poll comes out in the morning, the morning news shows will have it, cable news will have it all day, and the networks will have it on their evening newscasts.
If a big paper like the NYT didn’t get a preview, the teevee people would have it al day long and the Times would have nuthin.
Makes sense to me, especially since the poll-takers are selling a product.
YMMV

Christy @ 146 – yes. It’s the Spurlock series. Last week was a minuteman living with illegal immigrants and that show was also amazing. I love this show.

Schlesinger doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell. I don’t know how viable their potential replacements are, though.

Prairie Sunshine,
LOL @ H. Rap Bush!
Eli @ 155
I have a hard time believing that there’s not a single Republican in Connecticut that wouldn’t make a better candidate than Joe.
Praire Sunshine-Yes Froomkins column on the signing statements may fore tell alot. Apparently columns from red states all over the country are defending the Constitution and not the Presidents right to trash it. Maybe Ned needs to move on the the general election now and attack the status quo head on. Joe no longer exists.
Also in the Post today a great column by Harold Meyerson on how the repugs what to attach an estate tax to minimum wage legis. He says the repugs are playing Gotcha politics-more concerned like Joe about maintaining power instead of solving problems.
OT – Still a few trolls rolling in, last thread.
I have a hard time believing that there’s not a single Republican in Connecticut that wouldn’t make a better candidate than Joe.
CT Republicans *love* Joe. His approval rating with them is 70% (5 points higher than Bush’s), and he absolutely waxes Schlesinger in that demographic, like 60-something to 24, IIRC.
Ned’s NYT article is up.

Christy – Last week Morgan stuck a minuteman in a 500 sq’ apt with a illegal family of 7 and a cat. Really off to a good start this year.
LOL! I’ll take that as a “get up from your duck and cover, you damn fool.”
Incidentally, someone posted here earlier that the Q Poll was coming out at 11 a.m. I was curious as to how they knew this. The last time out it was super early morning. Did they call and ask?
JWR, moderators can see all comments on whatever thread and promptly zap the trolls … but thanks for the heads up!

These are the Republicans we’re talking about. They’ve shifted so far to the right that it’s all crazies, all the time now, nationwide. Now that’s a downirght boon in a state like AL or TX, states full of those kinds of crazies–and they vote. But it doesn’t work so well in CT, where some sanity remains, and some sane people vote. Plenty of people in places like CT look at these frothing at the mouth nutbags and think, “OMFG, this guy is running for office, not down the halls of Bedlam????”
Whereas, in Texas, we vote the raving loons into office. An apolitical friend of mine used to say that we Texans vote for people we know will amuse us, since we’ve given up trying to get them to represent us. At least they give us a free show for the money we’re payin’ ‘em. And that’s about the best explanation I have for why we get some of the wackos in office that we do.
The press is like a kid’s soccer game-the Thugs kick the ball up in the air, and the whole pack of kids just goes running after it.
Morgan’s appearance on Oprah, talking about trying to live on the minimum wage, made the nightly news.
The minimum wage increase won’t make it through this congress. Something else every Democrat should use as a blunt object on Republican heads
LJ/Aquaria at 148 – okay … memories ….foggy though they are ….. winter …. I believe Halloween, me dressed up as a butterfly, drinking beer and shots of tequila with friends from college….. years ago. I am not sure I have hit Keystone in the winter since.
For another reference in South Dakota, take note of the land between mile markers 201 and 202 on I-90. The interstate goes through what was part of the family farm and on those fields I spent many hours on the tractor. ….and one of the places you will see Democratic signs during election years. ;)

ooooh, big rolling earthquake in the center of San Francisco just now. It’s stopped I think. My building moved around a little. Everyone here’s okay.

that was deep and wide at the same time.

how long did it last ??
I miss a good earthquake…

all’s quiet here, nothing on the local TV news yet. Power’s still on (duh! I’m typing….)

I was making the bed when my friend yelled from the other room Oh my god, did you feel that? Being a native Californian, I knew what that meant! :-) So, I stopped what I was doing, looked around, and noticed that the closet doors were shaking.
I’m in the SOMA area. I wonder where the epicenter was.
USGS says 4.4 centered in Santa Rosa:
info at http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recen…..187964.htm
Dang, how do you Californians live with that kind of thing? I think I’d be looking for a change of undies about now. :)
hi folks – the seismic gurus at clatech have pegged the quake as 4.5, centered in Sonoma co 6 km w of Glen Ellen (south of Santa Rosa).
that was a long-duration wave – any reports of liquefaction in the north bay?
Eureka Springs, AR @ 190
wow — small world. i was at haight and cole in 89 too!
4.5 JELLO
4.4 barely enough of a shaker to make a good martini.
You guys aren’t native Californians are you?

I had just finished shelving books in Stanford’s government documents library. Complete waste of time.
Hey, 4.4 or 4.5 ain’t nuttin to a native!!!
I was home sick from school (i think I was 12?), and we got a 5. something. i was asleep on the couch, the shaker threw me off onto the floor. I got back on the couch and went back to sleep.
4.5 is not enough for me to even notice. And I’m not a Californian.
I grew up a coupla hundred miles from the Andes — small earthquakes were a daily occurance (nothing nasty) — living in Indiana its all so stable (yes, I know of the New Madrid Fault).

Live with it long enough and it’s no big thang, mostly. I remember running for the doorways with my grandma in Millbrae when I was 4. I’d much rather live with the occasional shake than hurricanes and tornadoes, both of which I’ve experienced, thankyouverymuch.
That said, take care everyone.

new thread — hang on!
kirk murphy @ 200
Kirk it just depends on whats underneath the building. my house in SF is on Bedrock. all I got in the ‘89 quake was some cosmetic damage and literally, aglass of spilled milk.
Well, there’s none of that nasty hurricane prep, but it can be scary when it happens, sez this East Coast lad of his adopted seismography.
Sneaky, they are, no Weather Channel radar images, or Anderson Cooper blabbing on about them two days ahead of time.
HopeSpringsATurtle @ 183
My friend just told me her 1989 story: she was at 7th & Harrison in her little car and the street started going up in down in different places. She thought it would flip the car. Then the glass and everything around her started exploding. Yikes. I was in L.A. in 1989. The again, my parents lived about 5 miles from Northridge in the 90’s… the stories they have told me about that experience are insane.
Yeah, 4.5, but it was kind of a doozer considering how far away it was. I’m guessing there’s some minor damage.
I was in Santa Cruz not far from the epicenter in ‘89. Scariest fucking moments of my life, so I’m rather skiddish in these events. All the windows and shower doors in our house exploded, stove and refrigerator hopped about 3 feet, big mess, pets bouncing off the walls, rolling asphalt, fires downtown in the distance, death, no power or water for days, thousands and thousands of aftershocks. Anyway, you get the picture. It was like one of those cheap movies, really. Never forget it.
I tend to leap up and go for my stuff and head for the door. Just a reflex.
Now they’re saying 4.7 in a news break.
I still remember the Tehachapi quake of ‘52, though not as if it were yesterday.
What I like about hurricanes are the warnings. Being from Florida, I don’t know how Californians deal with these no warning type emergencies. Big difference, I think.
Dr Murphy you can come to the Poodle Palace That’s what we call our house, and way before I knew there was a Kobi) and have a shaker full with us anytime.
I had sex once during a hurricane…it was during tech school when I was in the Air Force here in texass
SharonW @ 194
4.5 doesn’t even phaze the cats anymore hehe. You live with it because they happen so rarely at a dangerous level, and the rest of the year the weather is just so much better than most of the rest of the country.
We didn’t feel anything down here in LA…not surprisingly. We might a little rumble in a few days from it.
After Whittier A Four would send me running for the door. I always wanted to be outside, just get me outside..
HopeSAT – My house had one photo knocked over in ‘87, not a crack in the paint. found out5 later we were on about a two square block of bedrock. Lyon and Golden Gate.
good catch moderator
Hey Kirk- Yes, it was 94- mom’s house 3 miles from the epicenter. Total destruction. My landlady came in to get me to watch the TV- “doesn’t your mother live in L.A.?” Watched the Northridge Mall collapse numerous times on the news.. and couldn’t get thru to mom on the phone for 4 days. Police finally called- they shoved open the den door where all of the books had fallen and knocked the phone off the hook. Not that phones were working for the first 3 days after. Finally talked to mom on phone- at that very same time I was talking to my sister about our plans to arrive to help mom. Call waiting click.. I answered… mom… (78 at the time) said- I hope you girls aren’t planning to come here, because I might just order you off the property with a shotgun! (what shotgun?) Later I asked her if she *might* have been a bit traumatized by the event, considering what she had said. Oh! Angry words back.
Eureka Springs, AR @ 220
Shut up!! My house is on Golden Gate and baker!!1
Hope, I’ll be honored – and whenever you and yours get out for the next visit, I hope you’ll come for a drink at the hairball hotel. the cats who allow me to reside with them would be thrilled..
glad you were on bedrock for the Loma Prieta fun. couldn’t agree more about the whims of soil type – my little block in Santa Monica was about eleven miles from the Northridge epicente, but the shallow waves came horizontally through the crust – depending on soil type, some house on th eblock were bounced off th efoundation, some just flexed (same construction)
ccmask @ 216
Actually, growing up in Los Angeles, I noticed that earthquakes happened at 4AM, whenever my parents were away on vacation. The funny thing is, this week, my parents are on a cruise on the Blue Danube, so I guess I should have known there would be an earthquake! :-)
Jesus, but I DO have a man-crush on Stephen Colbert! A glow pen, fer god’s sake!
Well, after Katrina, Slate did a little study of which state in the country was the safest from natural disasters. It included many factors including emergency prepardness and ability to handle the cost of recovery.
My dear, safe CT won. I like that. I think I was permanently scarred by the tornado in the Wizard of Oz as a child. ;)
I was watching the ‘89 World Series at work with my co-workers when the screen went black for several minutes. We were thumping the TV, checking the plug. We finally switched channels and were stunned to see the news. I have family in the city and didn’t hear from them for hours. All OK, fortunately.
We have many earthquake tales but perhaps the most important advice to remember is…always wear underwear if you sleep in a T-shirt and live on the second floor or above. Sometimes there are TV cameras pointed right at you when the fireman leads you down the ladder.
Girl! I lived in that neighborhood for seven years. 746 Lyon and 183? McAllister.

The Ned story is to technical ad dry for many to really get through. Not a big hit, though the reporter should have pointed out Joe’s wealth.

And yet, it also strangely excites me. LOL.
I just got back from Jesse Jackson’s endorsement of Ned Lamont and John DeStefano at a church in New Haven. All’s I can say is, if the Catholic church was THAT much fun, I’d probably never have strayed. I had a GREAT time tonight, and got to tape an interview of the Rev. Jackson hisself.
Look for it on ConnecticutBlog; I taped it for CT Blogger, who’s a huge fan of the Rev.

4.5… Pah.
I was in Santa Clara one morning when we got one of those, when my mother was visiting. I came out of the bedroom to go make coffee–small tremblor, no big deal. My mother asked me, “Who’s walking on the roof?” I told her. “Nobody.” Big yawn. “It’s just an earthquake.”
And that’s when she started freaking out, screaming and trying to hide under a table. I was like, what is wrong with you, you lunatic? It’s a small one! But she insisted that I turn on the radio, find out what was going on, surely there were emergencies, all over town, what if they needed her (she’s an anesthetist, visiting or not, she’s gonna pitch in).
And when I turned on the radio, everybody was laughing about it and saying, “Yeah, I was on the toilet when I felt it.” Seems like everybody was on the danged toilet. Hee hee. And Ma was like, “What’s the matter with these people?!” She just couldn’t get it that it was

OT – News Corp update: Rupert Murdoch as well as Clint’s PBC security detail (with back-up from the State highway patrol and Monterey County Sheriff’s office) closed down Highway One late Tuesday evening infuriating stuck drivers for an interminable 45-minutes. Yeah, just about as hilarious as Gov. Terminator importing his Humvee golf cart to the Links at Spanish Bay to show off for Murdoch and his stellar guests. Big Bill Clinton may have been impressed but we hear Bono was already long gone. Al Gore was expected but we’ll believe it when we see untainted evidence. Half the residents are hoping Murdoch will effect a friendly takeover and oust ATT from their unholy alliance with PBC – some hoping Clint will awaken from his coma and buy ATT out. I’m just hoping the national media will pay closer attention to all these arrogant stealthy shadow players. pretending to be good fellas.

My first quake was on the John 4.2. Sunday paper whole thing and I just remember saying “Not like this God, Please.”
That USGS website is great – been using it for quite a while.
Funny story about moving to the Bay Area. I came out here to look for a place to live, and a pastor friend in South SF agreed to put me up for a couple of nights. I got in late, and at breakfast I met her husband and 7 year old son. The son looked at me with great big eyes, and said “Mommy says that you live in Kansas City. Daddy and I watched ‘Twister’ last night, and I could never live someone that has tornadoes. Do you have a storm cellar?” I replied “I’ve got a big basement, which amounts to the same thing. I’ve also got other pastor friends back in Kansas City who think I’m crazy for moving out here where the earth moves.” The 7 year old just laughed.
We’ve all got our natural disasters to deal with – and we get comfortable with the ones we know!

Today I did the two LieberBus videos at Joe’s Milford stop; sweated about 1/3 of my body weight out at the retardedly-scheduled NOON-on-the-hottest-day-of-the-young-century Wal-mart rally in Bridgeport (which yielded shit for video); ran home and edited my video from earlier; then raced to New Haven in my non-airconditioned car to sit in a warmish church and watch Rev. Jackson endorse Ned.
I couldn’t do that if I wasn’t psyched. And thank god it’s gonna be over by Wednesday.
We all are pretty much redlining our efforts this last week. There’s no tomorrow if we don’t win.

Way, way late to the last thread – now closed – but wanted to offer a couple of quick thoughts:
I admire darkblack’s artistic creations, as they blend and mix reality and imagination in some very interesting ways. They hit me in different ways, but always get me thinking . . . and that’s all good.
I admire Jane’s powerful political conversations, and her ability to focus attention where it needs to be.
I am thrilled beyond belief to be surrounded here by folks who have created a space for civil yet passionate discussion.
I am humbled by the troll-swatting efforts of the Mod Gods who help make all this possible.
This, too, shall pass. Thanks, Jane – for your column at HuffPo (yes, a few of us did read it!), and for this thread. Another fine example of civility . . . and let those who have ears, hear.

I Feel Like Jonah In The Belly Of The Whale . . .
Hey Kirk- oh, sorry, I didn’t mean my mother lost her house. The wood frame houses stood up quite well. I was speaking re: the scene when I finally arrived, which was that probably every single chimney of every house that I saw was no longer- probably collapsed in the den (mom’s case) or elsewhere. By destruction I rather meant total confusion and lack of services or help. My mom’s house survived, it just took several steps down in “curb appeal”. She is ornery- didn’t have hot water for 5 years after, but that’s another story…

My now ex in-laws were living in Sacramento during the 89 quake. When we were finally able to get through to them to find out if everybody out there was ok (lots of family in the Bay Area, too), the in-laws said they were sitting in their backyard, in Sacramento mind you, when the pool started sloshing, and then this giant wave shot out of the pool–onto them. It took about half the pool’s water, one shot. That’s how bad that Loma Prieta baby was. Now that’s a quake!
I guess it’s wrong to laugh. But they kinda laugh about that one, how they all got totally drenched,. Never mind the ruined packs of cigarettes, lighters and cocktails! Heaven forbid!
neither Lutheran nor bear; I’m part eagle and my grandmother was a Dreamsicle.
bonzie, get in line!
I don’t get to go to CT after all. :-(
Good luck, you guys, and let me know if there’s anything more I can do from home.
Hmmm…Willis. Anyone know anything about this?
CTBob, really intertested in your take on Jackson’s endorsement. I shook his hand once and was kind of surprised that he wasn’t taller.
HopeSAT – We must be talking different quakes..
From Wiki
Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989, in the greater San Francisco Bay Area in California at 5:04 p.m. local time and measured 7.1 on the Richter magnitude scale
This was one of my best friends B-day. World Series, Hot outside etc.

sometimes the sychronicity is scary – three of the felines who tolerate me here are half maine coon (daddy was a maine coon, their mom filbert is a lovely calico shorthair).
two of the 1/2 mc’s are boys, one a girl (a littermate was born with an inoperable cleft palate and did not survive, sadly). the boys are BIG cats with rich, thick coats – the girl is smaller than average, with a lovely thick short coat. All three are very social and inquisitive, and the boys like to play in water.
hope all the creatures in both your lives bring you joy…
Eureka–OMFG. HA! On the toilet. What is it with people being on the toilet when there are earthquakes???
Wait…
Maybe it’s all the people on them that are causing the earthquakes? ;)
Hope- I have never had other than same- strays and rescues (and 2 “rental” cats that I took care of while renting owner’s house. But, I was reading up on Maine Coons a few days ago, and they do seem to have such sweet personalities. Actually, I spent about 3 hours checking out different Maine Coon sites. So, that’s why I was curious about your guy- how did you know he was a “real” Maine Coon? Last mo. in Maine I visited a friend who had a new rescue cat- I thought probably part Maine Coon because of the huge paws, no meows, fur pattern and such. And, he would let me rub his belly. Got to wondering if this is a guy cat thing? Only ever had females before, and belly was off bounds. But, a few friends say their guy cats are okay with the belly thing. (Sorry for the ramble)

Don’t worry, I’ve been moderated again.
I haven’t attacked anyone, I haven’t uttered an obscenity. I haven’t quoted regressive talking points.
All I did was disagree, but apparently theres no room for that here.
cbl, you were in Candlestick? Creepy.
I swear, it was horrific. But I’m a native Californian and there is definitely some kind of weird oh-well about it.
Willis at 8:52:
Moderation isn’t oblivion. It just means that something in your post inadvertently triggered the spam filters or something, and a moderator will have to let it through (which they will shortly.)
Offensive or trollish posts are often deleted after they appear. Moderation is a different thing entirely. Just be patient.
hmm. isn’t it weird that drudge never linked to any stories about the death of Baucus’ nephew?
I have no idea why.

Willis –
Sometimes posts go into moderation because the spam filters catch something; that happens to everyone.
On the other hand, the site has been attacked by trolls all day, and a lot of posts have been deleted. It’s possible that’s what happened; but if you are using a PC, hit the F5 button to refresh the whole page. Maybe it will show up.

Maybe that picture of Malkin self-destructed, taking the thread with it?
i think my inner ocd was never so happy as when it could set the dewey decimal system to rights again…
I think the GovDocs system was a bit more idiosyncratic, IIRC. It usually wasn’t too difficult, so I usually ended up spending a lot of time browsing NASA or FBI.
Meta,
You were surprised at CT Bob’s height?
-GSD
Comments are shut down on the last thread.
-ck- @ 290
I really hope it does show up eventually. I’ve been reading this blog for over a year, but I’ll have to stop if my reasonable, albeit disagreeing, posts get deleted without any sort of explanation
GSD, no! Jesse Jackson’s!
cbl – we probably watched you climb down the stadium stairs, each of us worried about you all making it down before any aftershocks hit.
I’m reminded with each quake that a big part of life’s sweetness is uncertainty. These days, I’m often secretly thrilled that so much of great import is happening around the world. It’s a Gaian shrug, an unsubtle move to get the most irritating and toxic critters off Her back.
veruca, we need somebody with a car, or something. And a good music delivery system……

Just noticed this. Not at all offended but I do think it worthy to note that I had quoted Napoleon Dynamite from the scene about hunting Wolverines with his Uncle, not anything from Red Dawn (never saw it). Just sayin.

oooh! oooh! I’ve planned to take off August 9-21 for free activist witch camp in Oregon…
now it looks as though I may spend the vacation helping Oregon forest defenders fight off Bush’s opening assault on roadless areas (one step away from designated wilderness – until the logging and logging roads desrtoy the backcountry)
but a roadtrip to the fun in CT – damn, wish my vacation started today, not next wednesday. we’d be talking route preferences…..
We need about ten cross country Bio Diesel Pup Bus, Lamont Bandwagon Tour ‘06.

It’s been a long and stressful day — sometimes comments disappear, without a trace or reason why.
Be patient, and try again when things are less kerfluffled.

Ark Springs…my memory is faulty. it was the ‘87 quake, Oct. 17th…see I am getting old
We’ve all been tossed into moderation at one time or another, for inexplicable reasons.
And, really, if iit doesn’t show up, don’t take it too personally. Sometimes posts go bye-bye for weird reasons that have nothing to do with the content or any of that. I’ve had that happen to me lots of times. Poof! gone. Where? Who knows?
Try posting it again, if it means so much to you.
-ck- @ 305
I expect an email explaining why my comments got deleted, and what the specific reason was for the moderation.
Hope – We both are “89 on the 17th lmao
We need a Tour for Today. Joe is going down.
Dude, chill out, it’s a software thang. It happens to all of us.
Man, you think this is bad you ought to try the ABC message boards. It filters such oddities as “chron.” Discussions of Niger and Dick Cheney also cause filtering, but at least with those you can sorta see some resemblance of reasoning behind it.

Willis, if you’ve been reading for a year, you know how moderation works, and you also know that reasonable comments get posted, whether they disagree with someone or not. Try looking at the threads today, for just a couple of examples.
LJ/Aquaria @ 307
Look, I’m a liberal, and I’m not ashamed to say it. But if this blog routinely deletes comments for nothing more than disagreement, I can’t continue to support it with my money or my daily reading of it.
It’s that simple. If you want me to continue reaing this blog, send me an explanation for why my comments were deleted.
Willis at 9:08 pm – I expect an email explaining why my comments got deleted, and what the specific reason was for the moderation.
WTF?
take a deep breath
Just for reference, my initial post occured at 8:46. I had another post at 8:52 which was responded to that also is gone.
New troll tactic. Nobody who has read this blog for that long would be this clueless and willfully blind to our responses.

when software/java/random glitches accidentally tank a post (or my cat rain charges along and knocks out a connection as i’m posting), the post is lost without any human intervention.
now our moderators are good, but they’re not expected to be cyber-clairvoyants.
oops – silly me – i didn’t get the subtle humor
gee, if it weren’t for the subtle humor bit, i’d be hoping you were making a promise there, troll.
does a year mean four beers?
kirk,
Sorry, I had to deal with real life for a while. Mostly what I remember about the Tehachapi quake was being tossed out of bed. I was all of five years old, so I was “in play”. My father said that he dreamed a giant had come into my parents’ bedroom and grabbed the bedframe and began shaking it. The quake happened around 5:30 a.m. in midsummer, so it was barely light outside.
We lived in a close-in suburb of L.A., but the quake was so strong that I thought our frame cottage would collapse. As I’ve since learned, all that structural flexibility is very useful!
Obviously, the quake did a lot of damage in southern Kern County, destroying about half of the town of Tehachapi and doing serious damage to the Southern Pacific railway tunnels in those mountains. IIRC, it took months to get that line back in service.

I’m not a troll. Check my IP address. I’ve been reading this blog for a long time.
You can tell that, at least my 8:52 post, was not lost in-send since two different people responded to it.
So embarrassed I hit post with my rambling near incoherent moaning about Murdoch and Clint, etc. et al. No excuse but sincere apologies.
The comment I intended was to note & celebrate the Santa Rosa quake tonight was not a repeat of the 1906 horror. I was told the ‘06 quake originated in Santa Clara. Bless firepups on this thread for completely ignoring my comments meltdown.
If it helps to know, since the new bells and whistles came in, one or two of my comments disappeared and never showed up. They were completely benign, so I figured it was a glitch of some kind.

Drat! I hope you have great time and it sounds like an important trip to help but Gee! Think about it… how cool it would be to go there
Now I will use my special Boxer incantation to change your plans…
No no. No-no-no-no. What you said was – let me finish because I read about it – What you’ve said is that you believe that you have an obligation to go to Connecticut. – Let’s say that you can change your plans and start on the route preferences. – Walk! Let’s go help Ned, that’s what you meant.
Sigh…

I sincerely doubt that’s what it was, since both of my deleted posts were on the site for a minute or two, and the second was responded to twice, as you can see.

can we direct the incantation to the calendar? (i thought the primary was over by august 9th….)
Alright, it’s been approximately an hour since my two posts were deleted. I haven’t received an explanation, an apology, or anything.
I’m assuming they’ll never be restored.
You’ve lost this reader permanently.
Willis @ 328
Happy Trails to you, Pardner!
this is weird – I’m in Berkeley and didn’t feel the quake at all.
Willis, would you like catchup with those fries?
Goodbye and good riddance, Willis.
ChristAlmightyDamn, some people expect explanations on a small site, late at night, toot suite, when we’ve got trolls running rampant on a couple of different threads here? With new software running on the site, too?
And if your posts are lost, then they’re lost. Get over it. And nobody’s going to send you an email. I wouldn’t. It would be there. Or it wouldn’t be. This ain’t Wal-Mart.
If you think it was so almighty important, POST IT AGAIN. If it’s gotten pulled again, then perhaps it’s not as inoffensive as you think it is. Try re-wording it.
What a crybaby.
Somebody got some pearls for this guy to clutch?

If my posts were important enough to selectively delete, they should be able to provide an explanation for a loyal reader.

Yep. And. White man in cloying parody of a Black man…Goper in cloying parody of Democrat…six…half-dozen…
The picture might have been a bit edgy, but as far as I’m concerned it was getting at something real.
(Life-long Black person)
In the NYT yesterday, an article referred to the readiness of certain leading Dems, most prominently Kerry, to take Joe on if he loses August 8. The vultures are gathering.
