Matt Stoller has an hilarious post up about his adventures in the Kiss Float -- and their stop at a Joe Lieberman rally in New Haven.
...After all the politicos had spoken, Lieberman finally stepped up to the mike. Lieberman's speech was bad, weird, listless, and angry. He said that there are two big lies in this campaign. The first is apparently that Lieberman is not a Democrat. For the record, we call him George Bush's favorite Democrat, though we tend to acknowledge that he's a Democrat. After repeating the the mean liberal voices he hears in his head, Lieberman said something along the lines of 'I'm a Democrat, I believe in human rights, in government working for the people, etc.' What's hilarious about Lieberman's point is that he not only violated campaign speak 101, which is that you don't repeat your opponent's attacks on you, but he actually invented a new attack line and used it on himself so he could deny it.The second big apparent slap is even weirder. 'The other big lie in this campaign is that I am George Bush.' With special emphasis, Lieberman said slowly, 'I. am. not. George. Bush.' How do you even respond to that? It's like Lieberman is running against the Chewbacca defense. He's just picking facts about himself, not positions or anything like that, just simple human facts, and saying that we are lying about them. Here's a three line play I wrote to illustrate the dynamic:
Enter Joe Lieberman, stage right
Lieberman: My opponent says I am made of wax. I am not made of wax, that is a total fabrication!
The world: What are you talking about?
awkward pause
The End
In the rest of his speech, Lieberman referred repeatedly to his work in the 1960s marching and registering voters in the South. Even this didn't work, since most people in the semi-crowd weren't actually alive in the the early 1960s. At a certain point during the anecdote, one of his staffers shouted out derisively 'Where was Ned?' Lieberman grinned and said 'That's a good question, where was Ned?' While not a devastating blow, it does seem reasonable to wonder why Ned Lamont wasn't in the South in the early 1960s registering voters like Joe Lieberman was.
Apparently, Ned's lame excuse is that he was in elementary school....
Oh man, I needed that belly laugh this morning. Go over to MyDD and read the whole day long saga story. For those of you who've always wondered what working on a campaign would be like...well, you occasionally get wacky days like this, but there's also a whole lot of calling people on the phone and addressing envelopes.

and a faithful FITZ, cbl
I think e’s been reading my comments about him, I do not believe he is a democrat and I’ve said it repeatedly, I believe he is a republican, taking contrubutions from both sides of the aisle
he votes with us when his vote means nothing, he votes against us when every vote counts
he is a judas sheap stealing our resources and I wish he would jump the party and run as “a moderate republican” rather then a “right wing nut democrat”
0?I guess not.34 is ok.Your play is the first thing I’ve read today, and among the funniest plays in Great American Playwriting History. Twain is laughing his face off somewhere. Seriously.
But don’t stage directions count? Are you sure this isn’t a five line play? And why do you hate America so much?
XO,

yeah, I know, I’m back to ‘moderation’
The “Kiss Float” is one of the great political gags of all time.
I especially love this picture that was at the Daily Kos.
You guys may well have had it firse.
Morning cbl! [whipcrack]HYAAH![/whipcrack] Get in that backend now! We got comment strays all over these toobz!
Go away for a few days and find the house has been redecorated!
New toys to play with?
Well, that did it.
First time somebody who’s not even here sent me 707.
Whoops…I mean Matt’s play. Sorry…
Coffee!
I mean “Fitz!”
Wow I did that hyper blog commenting excessive use of the ! thing. [sigh] Oh hwell.
RevDeb @ 12
Missed you RevDeb, how did it go? New toys are spiffay, arent they?
Lieberliar surrogate attacks Neds wife.
…such pathetic pricks

o/t - watching Imus (#%^@#$@!) just b/c he is showcasing Billy Joe Shaver (Texan and among handful of great American songwriters IMHO)
now to read the post - I’m goin’, I’m goin’ awready - but first have to say have kept myself sane and amused these past few off kilter weeks just by thinking of that damn float haunting RGJoe everywhere - I’m with Attaturk - Dick Tuck would be so proud
OT
cbl: Yup, been there, done that….for hours!
larry @ 16
Sirota rocks. I cannot believe Loserman would drag Ned’s wife into this knowing who his own wife works for! Talk about a political tin ear!
What I find impressive is the way Ted Lamont has handled himself as he has become a national political figure over the past few weeks. He seems to come accross as a trully decent politician. On the other hand, Leiberman has been a disappointment.
Fini,
sorry I missed the phone conf. Did you get it podded?
Nice time in the Europe of Canada. REALLY lively city with way too much good food, street performers, shops, etc. Got to watch the news on the CBC which was in contrast to CNN. Wish we got it here.
Anyway, laundry, diet, catching up on hundreds of blog posts all over my rss and some stuff I want to write myself. Then to CT to work for Ned this weekend.
Lots to do but for the next 2 days, going nowhere—staying in cool house and avoiding outside air if at all possible. Don’t like blast furnaces.
When you’re calling and asking for donations how do you prefer to be told no?
I am getting 8 to 10 calls a week and I would truly love to give to all but I can’t. So, I have to say no alot.
I cannot believe Loserman would drag Ned’s wife into this knowing who his own wife works for!
That’s Pathetic Loserman to you, Fini.
RevDeb @ 21
Yes and no actually. I have a recording, but GCast was fussy and wouldn’t post it. I do have the file ready but need an alternate means of making it available. I had some other work I had to tend to last few days and will try to get that online this evening, thanks for the reminder!
considering the current pay of a US Senator is $165,200, I doubt if wifey has to be frugal and scrimp. That’s about 5 times the average wage in the US. Hadassah is not exactly living on Food Stamps…
Stoller rocks!
One more week! How the hell am I supposed to sleep between now and then?
OT - I like the new buttons!
lotus @ 23
I wish there were some of those signs left with Sore Loserman on them to torture him with on his bus tour.
owlbear at 21 — I always liked the ones who said, “You know, I can’t afford to donate right now. But if you have some envelopes that need stuffing or something else that needs to be done, I’d be happy to help.” Because, frankly, you never have enough volunteers — you can always, ALWAYS, use more hands to help out. I know it was that way when I volunteered for the Kerry folks, and helped knock on doors for other candidates that I know. :)
Fini,
Thanks. Would like to stick with the conversation and get the site to work happily for new people.
Wireless connection in Quebec was iffy so didn’t stay well connected there—on the other hand, it was supposed to be a vacation, a change of pace. Addictions come in all forms.
Just as we were going to get our bags and load the car, there was a car pulling out from in front of the hotel in QC that had CT plates and a Ned bumper sticker. ‘Twas a great sight to behold.
Christy, have I ever said THANK YOU? I’ve thought it countless times.
CT Bob @ 26
CTBob, you’re doing some fantastic work brother, and you’ll all sleep like rabid lambs when its over with next Wednesday morning. Keep up the good work, you are all inspiring as hell for the rest of the Roots.
hey you guys, thanks for chatting so much last thread — really helps here, out in the mosquitoey fens of yamato, heh!
i’ll be lurking this thread, as usual — teach me teh cool stuff like ya always do, nkay?
so, back to editing photos and writing textiletext….
Christy, have you had a gander at the EPU numbers, last thread? Do bleeve it was Ned-on-Colbert more tha TRex-on-Coulter (DEElicious as that was!) that busted our record.
Whatever, hit RAWKS!
Oh, and Christy, if you don’t click on medaka’s name, you’re depriving yourself. Just sayin’.
madaka - don’t be a stranger.)
lotus @ 33
WERD. Medaka’s gonna find me a Sumo sized kimono I can lounge around the house in!
Lotus at 32 — Oh, I’ve already seen Medaka’s awesome website. One of these days, if I can ever get my behind to Japan, I’m going shopping for a beautiful kimono and taking Medaka along for advice. :)
What the hell is wrong with the police in this country? How could those goons in uniform so blatantly work as enforcers for the Lieberman rally? The way they tried to remove the Kiss float is disgusting. Those cops should be ashamed of themselves.
No lie, Christy — they look good enough to eat!
puppethead @ 37
Frankly I am amazed there haven’t been any Free Speech Zones erected around his event sites.
puppethead at 36 — if Lieberman is tight with the local police chief, and the police officers were ordered to provide aggressive security — then whatever show they were putting on was cover to make sure they didn’t get fired. (Which, considering a lot of cops that I know have to supplement their income with either food stamps or service in the national guard or reserves just to feed their kids, you can see why keeping their job would be important to them.)
It was over the top — but it was likely due to some orders from a much higher level. Police chiefs tend to get their jobs due to political connections and not actual policing abilities. (Although, I can happily say, the best police detective with whom I have ever worked is now police chief in the jurisdiction in which I previously prosecuted. Yay, Steve!)
Morning All!
Oh Christy! So refreshing! Delightful post.
lotus is right: Definitely a 707!
Still, I don’t know what’s more fun, the peek at the hapless lie-b. campaign or watching all the firepups playing with the new toys here.
Yesterday, I listened the Franken show interview with Ned, with the help of spazeboy’s download at FDL - THANKS. Ned’s intelligence and openness is so wonderful.
And the repubs still think it’s gonna help ‘em to whine that dems have no message(?!) I think not! I just hope this poor old world can somehow keep from blowing up completely before dems can take back power and start mopping up the mess.
Christy, you get you and your family here whenever you can, and I will guide you all around the ancient temples of Nara and Kyoto, and make sure you get the most perfect of threads: cotton, silk, hemp, indigo, safflower, madder, gromwell ….
And that goes for all you FDLers, y’hear? Eureka, and Fini and lotus, got that? Nkay!
You guys are too great. I do have the rest of the summer fairly free, and will try to keep up with you all, timezones be dayummed!
Medaka at 41 — I would LOVE it. Any tour that includes Japanese gardens, temples and wildlife sanctuaries would be perfect. And to meet you in person would be lovely as well — one of these days (she says hopefully…).
medaka- I wont miss Kyoto a second time.
arigato gozaimasu ;) (I think)
What a great way to start the day - Matt’s post at myDD made me laugh aout loud.
It’s interesting to see the difference between what is being reported on the ground, and how the race is being reported by the media. CBS had a story on last night’s Evening News - it had an air of, “how can this be?”
Joe’s really looking sad and pathetic - and I think there’s a desperation setting in, which should have the Lamont folks on high alert. And it also makes me hope that lhp’s suggestion re: an election attorney for Lamont, was acted on.
One week from today, folks!
oh, Old Sow, are you there?
tried to send mail through your website, but it bounced … you need to get yer B level thang you mentioned up to an A minus, girl!
DANG! my comment at 6:11
Had such fun with the new toys yesterday.
Today, can’t git it done right.
Just . . . THANKS, CT Bob!
We’re all with you in spirit!

Hey RevDeb, a quick check revealed a pleasant surprise. The GCast server decided to unfuss itself and the call is in the following feed which I will go post on the SRP site now: http://www.gcast.com/u/SRP_News/SRPCC
maybe that’s why I couldn’t sleep last night…restless rootster syndrome
Hey, has anyone noticed there’s something going on in Lebanon? Whats up FDL?
I know the Conn. Democratic primary is really important but….
[ Moderator: try looking at a days worth of comment threads on FDL — you will discover we are not the self-absorbed political junkies you imply we are … Newbies with a superior attitude rarely are greeted effusively. ]
Eureka Springs, AR @ 43
You got it, Eureka. Just give me enough advance warning! You’ve been here before, but not to Kyoto?
I know, Eureka, it hit me at 2 ay-em. Jeeesh.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! @

Thanks Fini FiniTOOBZ…sleep really isn’t much of an option, but I was enjoying the idea of it!
Here’s my life lately: Yesterday I got up at 5AM, worked in NY all morning, busted a drill bit that impaled my left hand, spent 4 hours in a walk-in clinic getting the fragment removed, drove my damaged hand to Torrington to videotape Emily Lamont’s speech (and what an awesome young woman she is!), taped a video ad for Lamont, got home after 9PM, uploaded my video onto my PC, had a 45-minute conference call, edited the video, watched Ned on Colbert, passed out around midnight, up at 6AM today to finish the video, uploaded it and now I’m checking the blogs.
I’m having the time of my life! :)
Medaka, try jobokunda at adelphia.net
new server, not caught up with all the changes…..lol
OT - but I read on Buzzflash this a.m. that republicans have paid money to enlist a Green candidate to run with Santorum and Casey. This candidate is pro-life (or so he says) and will probably take votes away from Casey. Another Nader gimmick.
The Green candidate willingly admits that his republican friends have been nicer to him that his dem friends. well duh. He now has the petitions to be on the ballot. Hope dems are awake on this and will, in this instance, vote for the good of the country.
kmfg is new in town, we see. Welcome! Acquaint yo’ seff.
Not to Kyoto. Two weeks Up and down Honshu and Kyusho.
“You know, I can’t afford to donate right now. But if you have some envelopes that need stuffing or something else that needs to be done, I’d be happy to help.”
being there, doing that - heck, there was brief period of time where I had no reliable transportation and was still able to help by compiling/editing lists on-line - and it feels so good to help out.
Well. maybe got it done after all, sorta.
Gonna need to play with these dang new toys a bit more after my coffee settles.
Apologies for OT, folks.
kmfg..something’s happening in Lebanon?
On my post #55, that was supposed to say the Green candidate is pro-CHOICE, not pro-life. I tried to edit but nothing showed up. This is the kind of double play the republicans played against Gore, and it worked.
Christy Hardin Smith @ 42
I’m starting to learn my birds here now, Christy. Have done pretty good with the trees and wildflowers, so far. I was never a real birder, but I’m just waking up to all the wacky birdiness around me: Lawdy, there are such huge blue herons and white egrets, just across the street! My next en-bicyclette project is to try and start differentiating among the varieties of sparrows that live in the reeds along the little rivers flowing between the paddies….
Really though, if you ever think you want to bring Mr Redd and Fi to Asia, you know who to contact first….
Re Lebanon - the only way we can change America’s policy towards Lebanon is get people like Lamont elected and send them to D.C. to make rational policy.
We can complain all we want but it is elections were our need for a change first takes hold.
Matt’s story is funny. It just goes to show the impact that the float is having. It’s brilliant. I truly hope that when history looks at this race, that the float will get the recognition it deserves.
Old Sow @ 54
OS, check yer mail …
kmfg at 50 — I’m going to help you out. Try clicking on the foreign policy topic at the right for starters and scroll downward. Lots of discussion on the issue. Also, try poking around a blog for a little while before you start telling the writers how to do their jobs on their own blog — especially since they take the blog very seriously, and have given Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, Iran and foreign policy matters a lot of in-depth discussion.
It’s only polite to be well-informed before you start lobbing criticisms. Especially when they are unwarranted. I’m just saying…
Christy at 6:25

KMFG is not a member of the Reality Based Community, the denizens of Right Blogtopia have this meme going that the “Nutroots” as they call us don’t blog foreign policy unless its antiwar spasmotics. Idiots.

I’m having the time of my life!
Sure hope you are getting a few hours of sleep too, Ct. Bob.
kmfg:
“Republicans can’t govern. Democrats can’t get elected.” (M. Moulitsas)
We are powerless over the Republicans who can’t govern. We have some power over Democratic primary races (as contributors, campaign workers, or as communicators.)
If you’re concerned about U.S. policy in the ME, get involved in a Congressional campaign. I’m afraid that’s all we’ve got right now.
peace.

Second play:
Lamont: I. Am. Not. George. Bush. Either.
Crowd: Never. Thought. You. Were.

Gang, kmfg has commented here before — not a newbie, but not a regular commenter either. Please don’t pile-on this morning. I think I was fairly clear in my comment and — considering I covered some Lebanon issues just yesterday in the “god read Froomkin” post, I think kmfg will find plenty to read from there. But the piling on needs to stop, please — thanks!
You guys realize that KMFG left the site about ten seconds after hitting submit for his comment right? He’s another astroturfing GOP hack like Dan Gerstein.
Did anyone see Lamont on Colbert last night? I thought he did a pretty credible job.
Where is the “Joe Tomorrow” tour headed to today?
What lina said at 6:34.

The commenters that ask why fdl’ers aren’t (supposedly) dissecting a topic reminds me of a certain male in my household that opens the door to the fridge & immediately asks, “Where’s the butter? (catsup, pickles, etc) which is, of course, just an inch behind something else. A perfect fridge would automatically know what you want to eat & rotate the food around for you before you even look inside.
OT, but curious.
Anyone else note a change in jr’s posture lately?

All hunched over, that head-bobbing thing, developing dowager-hump? or lil kid’s !DON’TWANNABEHERE! syndrome, bigtime, imho..
Man, I’d hate to be on his staff right now. whew.
punaise @ 84
Is that not the most interesting maneuver yet by Ahnuld or what? Fascinating, a tech and research sharing agreement between a US state and another nation would not technically break the Constitutional ban on individual states conducting their own foreign policy, would it?
OfT From 31 July 2006 from NBC News
Libby set to invoke memory defense in CIA case
“Attorneys for I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, in a court filing Monday, are seeking to admit the expert testimony of a memory specialist on behalf of Libby, the former chief of staff for Vice President Cheney, who faces charges of perjury and obstruction of justice for his role in the CIA leak scandal….”
cbl @ 68
Not yet, cbl. I have seen wild monkeys many times, though. It is kind of strange to see them in a temperate setting, though: on a cold day under autumn foliage. I guess I have them pigeonholed as tropical varmints …
Looks to me like Ahnuld is looking towards a run at a “bigger stage,” in 2008. That’ll piss off the neocons in the WH, McCain, and Fristy.
the Arnold/Tony thing is one more reason to go digging around the toobz and read up on Passive/Aggressive - my limited understanding of the concept tells me it pops up a lot in these right wing alliances - maybe one of the many head doctors lurking out there would care to comment -b/c gosh I see it a lot
Medaka
loved the textiles. Do you export to the US?
Re: KMFG
Have we noticed that for 3 (or is it 4) days in a row now, usually earlish in the day (EST) a brand new screenname has popped up and asked virtually the identical question, to wit, why don’t we talk about Lebanon?
Do you think is is possible that there are so many people who coincidentaly just happen to appear seriatim all with exactly te same concern and all completely unaware of the signifigant amount of prior discussion that has gone on about Lebanon? Hmmm?
Call me suspicious of my fellow man, but it has occured to me, that these are all one and the same person? Perhaps with different email accounts?
Yo will notice, too, that it only seemes to happen on Lamont threads.
You know, a guy just left the Suozzi campaign to go over to Joe’s campaign, and at about the same time a whole lots of concern troll posting on LIPolitics suddenly stopped.
Another funny coincidence. hmmmm?
Okay, I’m dipping a toe inna NYT’s lede story.
FiniFiniToobz @ 90 & punaise
No - this kind of thing is actually rather common, as US states and even cities offer tax breaks and other incentives to get foreign companies to set up a local shop in their neck of the woods. Also, think about the whole notion of “sister city” arrangements. Some are just “we like you, you like us, so let’s publicize the love,” while others actually have some money behind them. No constitutional problem here . . . unless Ahnold wants to set up a UK Embassy and start issuing CA passports.
Mostly, I read this whole episode as Ahnold wanting to stay governor. He’s fighting hard, trying to set up his green credentials - but mostly its been words so far, not deeds, and certainly not any budgetary funds.
He’s good with the script, once you sort out the accent.
Hey, lhp! How’s Our Miss Mittens today?

Yay Matt Stoller and FDL! Go Ned! I heard the Lieberyouth was acting more than a little ungentlemanly, or downright thuggish, bumping into Lamont campaigners (young women!) on purpose at events and soforth. There also lots of reports of stolen Ned lawn signs. It’s beyond me how Lieberliar can hire a bunch of youth from NJ or whereever and create a campaign culture in which they think it’s o.k. to police us CT natives at public events that are not merely Lieberliar events, e.g. Temptations.
I’m not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but Connecticut Bob has a great new positive campaign ad up at his site—left a big smile on my face.
Take a look! http://ctbob.blogspot.com/
I just noticed. There is a spell check. Did Jamie have me in mind when that got added?
Thank you, Thank you, Bless you

Yes, but there has been a whisper campaign aimed at repealing that with a Constitutional Amendment based on the idea that we have missed chances to have wonderful statesmen and women like Henry Kissinger or Madeline Albright run for Preznit.
cbl draws my 2nd 707, and it’s only mid-morning here!
Oooog, gonna be a long day too. Better find them last-throe pillers what punaise sent me.
lhp at 95.
I have had the same thought exactly. Now, one solution I dreamt up was for someone to post a late night thread simply with the title:
Lebannon. Maybe a picture of Israeli tanks or somesuch with links to serious foreign policy sites like Washington Note and Informed Comment and let people go in the comments in whatever direction (toward Lebannon or toward Connecticut) that they choose.
Then, whenever anyone come here and says, “What about Lebanon — why are you not obsessing about Lebanon?” we can just point them there.
I know it is a bit of troll pandering, but innoculation is sometimes the easiest path to wellness.
“Yes, but there has been a whisper campaign aimed at repealing that with a Constitutional Amendment”
the effort led by no less than Orrin Hatch
