I have to say I was surprised when Joe Lieberman accepted an invitation to be at the Wake Up WalMart press conference tomorrow. He's avoided appearing with Ned Lamont at all costs, and I was rather impressed Joe wanted to show his solidarity with those whom WalMart habitually exploits.
I guess it was just another photo op after all, because the fabulous Maura has done some digging and it turns out Holy Joe has no problems taking WalMart money -- this election cycle.
WalMart has a political action committee to further this right wing agenda.
Sounds good to get the word out to Americans about Wal-Mart's detrimental policies, right?
Both Joe Lieberman and Ned Lamont are scheduled to appear at the Wake Up WalMart rally in Bridgeport.
But only one of the two of these Senate candidates have accepted campaign contributions from Wal-Mart's right wing PAC. Want to guess which one?
Bingo! Joe Lieberman. And it was for this cycle, in February. When Lieberman ran for President, he also received maximum contributions from Wal-Mart family fortune heir John Walton and his wife Christy. (This is just an initial search - I may find even more.)
Once again Joe Lieberman tries to have it both ways - scold WalMart when he wants votes from people who care about good jobs and health care, but take campaign contributions to advance Wal-Mart's right wing agenda.
I'm thinking that will be me with my hand raised asking questions at the rally. WalMart isn't the only one who needs to wake up.
Meanwhile the slavishly bovine Sue Haigh of the AP takes more dictation from Lee Atwater Marion Slimefels about a story nobody cares about while Iraq burns. I'm starting to think maybe the AP has an agenda here. Maybe somebody should ask them?

Fitz! Ned! ROOTZ!
NED!!
gee! Ned! Fitz!
You go Jane!
Hopefully you’ll be allowed to attend.
First the whole Halliburton debacle, now this? Not that I’m complaining, but who the hell put Mr. Magoo in charge of Lieberman’s campaign?
but here’s the question, how many of the so-called journos covering the event will have bothered with this little bit of fact-checking. maybe you need to print up a handy little flyer to give any press people you run into the info on joe’s pac contributions. it would be delightful to watch the whole apperance backfire on him if all the coverage led off with a mention of joe biting the hand that feeds him.
kobe !
The photo of Ol’ Short Ride looks like Axel Rose in 20 years, minus the corn rows
Goodness, Shortride certainly seems to keep doing himself no good at every turn. And to that I can only say Bwahahahahahahaha!
e.c @ 7
Even better might be to simply print out the opensecrets.org page with the contributions from the Waltons to Joe. This makes it clear that this isn’t just something that someone on Ned’s side invented and shoved under a bunch of windshields.
It also might introduce some reporters to the notion of following campaign contributions . . .
that is hilarious about NAFTA/CAFTA Joe taking Walmart money in this election cycle. Unions have been working the anti-Walmart thing for a little while now — the LieberFolks must be politically tone-deaf to take Walmart money — it’s kinda like accepting Big-Tobacco-Corp cash these days…
I certainly hope a quickie flyer about Liebermans Walmart bigbucks donors gets printed up for the Rally !
Even better, ask if he’s going to return the contribution, since he’s appearing at the rally. That gives the press a potential ongoing story, which they could pick up and continue to ask about, rather than trying to get them to report the simple fact that he took the money.
Sharkbabe, I’ll add a big ole Mwahahahaha! to match your Bwahahahaaa!
Jane, and all in the Connecticut area, please take care today, heat advisories are out.
(Ohio too, for that matter)
I guess the Walmart folk have fallen out with Hillary — she’s gotten no cash from them this cycle.
Some great questions could be asked: “Does this mean you are returning the contributions you’ve received from the Walton family?” “How do you reconcile your appearance here with the contributions to your campaign from the Walton family?”
I hope the Lamont team is on high alert as Lieberman has to be reaching maximum levels of desperation – I sense that Lieberman will let nothing stand in the way of his return to the Senate, a position he seems to view as an entitlement instead of a privilege. I would be less concerned about campaign/voting tactics if Lieberman were desperate to serve the people of Connecticut, but this seems to be about Lieberman’s ego, which makes it more likely, in my opinion, for those tactics to border on – or cross the line of – illegal behavior.
This campaign contribution business might be an interesting thing to share with the union folks. Which unions have been active in trying to organize Walmart workers?
Have you seen this from the Hartford Courant?
Running Silent
It sounds like a Monty Python operation, “Run away, run away….”
Man have I mentioned I’m a calligrapher? I can make great posters, what I would give to be there right now with some art supplies… Go get ‘em Jane!
I really like Peterr’s idea of running off opensecrets.com facts to pass out.
Jane, looks like Pach’s new post went up ~ the same time as this one. Might need a fix.
As a follow-up to my comments on the last thread, I’ve got the full hour of “On Point” up at Spazeboy.net if anyone is interested in listening.
since jane obviously has a pretty good line to the lamont campaign, i hope she shared the info with them before she even posted it here.
Joe Lieberman: The Politics of Ho-Pimp
And concern trolls seeking coverage of Lebanon could simply divert to emptywheel’s latest:
http://thenexthurrah.typepad.c.....oliti.html
Others might prefer to concentrate on electing someone who can help bring peace instead of compounding wars. In which case, this post will do just fine, thanks.
Jane or anybody else “on the ground” —
Do you know whether nbc.30 did the story on that harebrained “Ned’s-a-racist” flyer either last night or this morning — ya know, the one that shoephone worked herself to a frazzle to spoonfeed them yesterday afternoon?
Speaking of the people of Connecticut, do the folks up there wonder what it would be like if HoJo had hired 4000 (or even 40) people to fan out into CT some time, say, in the last 12 years to find out what are the concerns of his constituents?
Just askin’ . . . .
“Police brutality”? Please.
They were verbally pushy, sure, and arguably out of line. But it’s a little ridiculous to call it “brutality”. The guy driving the kiss-mobile actually had nice things to say about the cops over at DailyKos.
*ilson46201 @

Joenertia took this back in, what, Jan. or Feb.? Back then he never dreamed that anyone would have the audacity to run against him so whatever he did was safe.
Not very good at forward thinking is he?
Shez @ 20
If the FDLers can help sponsor TRex’s trip to Connecticut, we sure as hell could defray the costs of poster board, permanent markers, and FED-EXing killer posters to CT.
You go Shez, and ask for support after the fact!
Get it done — get it done NOW!!!
Bearpaw, I haven’t read the Kos diary, do you have a link to it handy? spazeboy reported similar treatment by a cop after they threw him out of the Clinton/Lieberman rally last Monday.
capeman 19, love me some o’ dat link o’ yours!
Emphasis — between giggles and horselaughs — mine.
Spazeboy — thank you so much for the mp3 link! I am listening now (I get to hear it again later today on WNYC too!), the intro clips are playing now, and Joe sounds whiny and Ned sounds serious.
(Just tried the new spellcheck for the 1st time — how far out!)
Here’s an idea if Shez is interested. We just found out that you can upload a picture from your computer to your local Costco, and have prints up to 24″ done within an hour. I think it was just over $4.00 each for poster sized prints. Cheap advertising, huh?
timewarp, it just gets better!
LOL thanks ck! Got me thinkin’ cap on, and actually as of Late Night I’m trying to figure out if I can get to CT this weekend (complete with my portable catering kitchen), Siun is working on some options and is supposed to give us more details today. I’m raring to go in a heartbeat.
John Casper –
Matt Stoller has a good write up of the cop hassle at MyDD — Steve Gilliard reprinted the whole post, and it was really a no big deal. No brutality at all.
Matt was rattled, though — the cops tried to kick the kiss float out of the neighborhood, but a Lamont supporter let them park in their driveway. The pushy cops were foiled!!!
jane hamsher-
this is really interesting reporting you are doing from the connecticut campaign
i look forward to reading it each day.
thanks
Thanks -ck-.
Shez —
By all means, go to Connecticut!!!
But in the meantime, create some posters and Fed-Ex them to Jane — get them in circulation ASAP.
The Matt Stoller story of the kiss float and the cops has a long section on homemade signs, one of which was confiscated from a black child. Steve Gilliard says it could have gotten real ugly for the LieberThugs, and anything we can do to expose their inner ugliness is a good thing . . .
I haven’t read all the comments yet but that cop sure looks like David’s lover on Six Feet Under….
According to Josh MArshall and some of joe’s unnamed friends it’s the politics of embitterment for joe-nertia. The party failed to recognize his greatness back in 2004 so clearly the party doesn’t deserve his greatness.
Josh overlooks joe’s performance during the impeachment and his bending over for cheney during the debate.
oh snap, busted!
by the way
sara, at “the next hurrah” has the beginnings of a little history of the lamont family in american politics (”lamont, thomas and fdr”).
seems some of the lamont ancestors had practical political connections to the new deal.
this suggests that there is more than beginner’s luck operating in ned lamont’s favor.
Are the Joe folks keeping the petition drive so under wraps that it isn’t happening? Has anyone heard anything at all about sigs being gathered?
And is there a coordinated effort for out of state FDLers to work for Ned this weekend? or do we all go through the normal channels in Ned’s office?
Corrections on that suggestion to upload to Costco. It is $10 to have a 24″ print made. (My wife just got up and corrected me). Still, that is cheap, and Shez (or whoever) doesn’t have to be physically on site, just have someone run over to the nearest Costco where the files are uploaded to.
Sharpton Blasts Lieberman about racist flyers…
orionATL @ 44
Without hard evidence — flyers showing the opensecrets pages with the donations highlighted — Joe will deny the Walton donations and the press will let the issue die.
Best advice yet: get copies of the donation records to the rally, into the hands of the press covering it, with the question
The CT press corps has proven they need spoonfeeding — but that they respond positively to it, whether from Marion or from The Kiss Float.
is the moral equivalent of “have you stopped being beaten by your wife?” and should have a competent press corps salivating. It also feeds a larger narrative (campaign run aground) about RGJoe’s quest to retain his life peerage. Ink-stained wretches should go for that!
From the Stamford Advocate:
What in the world does Lieberman know about being cool?
Joe’s official campaign finance filings are public documents available at www.fec.gov — a photocopy of the particular page showing the $1000 from Wal-Pac (or whatever its called) would be damning and unassailable.
You know, I don’t want to rain on any parades here, but there’s still a week to go, and the entire dynamic of the campaign is completely different from what was expected.
Instead of a sleepy, low-turnout election where passionate Lamont folks turn out and Lieberman people stay home, allowing Ned to squeak by, we’re almost certainly looking at a higher than expected turnout. The evidence of the surge of registrations by unaffiliated voters is one indication. And Holy Joe’s Garden State Posse is also going to have a serious effect on turnout.
If I’d told you six weeks ago that there would be a high turnout, you’d have been concerned. Uninvolved voters have been flipping the lever for Joe for decades.
OTOH, I think Jane’s right when she said that there’s been a shift from anti-Lieberman (the Times endorsement didn’t have much to say about Ned) to pro-Lamont.
My point is that this race is now completely unpredictable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it anywhere in the 55-45 range either way. Lieberman’s outside canvassers may turn out votes for Lamont. I’m trying to figure out a way to help, because this is now a crapshoot. (That’s a good thing, of course. A crapshoot is way better than a near-certain crushing defeat.)
I also think this may be for all the marbles. I would not be surprised to find that the price for all this support from DC was conditioned on his dropping the Indy run. Nor would I be surprised to see his numbers plummet after a loss.
One final, rambling note, Chris Bowers at myDD has pointed out that this is a lose-lose proposition for the blogosphere in terms of traditional media. If Ned wins, we’re loony lefties ripping the party in two. If Ned loses, we’re irrelevant loony lefties.
Don’t let the bastards grind you down.
When I make posters for rallies I take the original art and blow it up to cover 4 or 6 pages and print it out on my ink jet printer. Then I glue it on to a foam core board. Makes clean good looking signs and I don’t have to go to a copy shop.
I agree with Teddy that handing out printouts of the actual documented donations would be the way to go along with a good sign.
Do be careful of the heat wherever you go though! It’s a nasty day out there.
Here’s the proof that Rove’s helping the Lieberman campaign, although Gerstein seems to work for RGJoe except when he’s not working for RGJoe, which is pretty much when he’s working for RGJoe. Regardless of who paid Gerstein today, here’s what he said to TPM about the stupid country club membership:
That’s absolute Rovian. Unquestionably.
I have had the fuck enough, thank you!
Hey Jane…we are all behind you in spades. Keep up the great work.
RevDeb,
yh(comcast)m
Another poster idea would be those BIG fake checks as signs from Walmart paid to Short Ride.
You could put the opensecrets doco in the corner but BIG walmart check paid to H-Joe would be very effective.
I am downloading Holy Joe’s official FEC campaign finance report and in a little while I will give you the page number containing the damning contribution from WalMart — it’s a 13Meg file (400 pages)…
in the meanwhile, talk amongst yourselves, please …

On the day he announced, I gave Phil Angelides a paperweight that used to sit on my dad’s desk when he worked for Pat Brown:
Noli Nothis Permetere Te Terrere
Illegitimus Non Carborandum.
Ohh Rev Deb, excellent idea! I’m PC graphics challenged though. But if our graphic artists could come up with a great poster and then partition it for enlargement and printing for the foam board that would be so cool to send the files to HQ. The documented donations page should be glued to the back of every poster too besides being handed out.
I can also see a Two-Faced Joe image, one side of his mouth bleating his bull about WalMart, the other face thanking WalMart and kissing them for their donations.
Wel - my buddy used to say illegitemus non-comprehendum
- don’t let the bastards understand you -
OT, but I have always been cheered by it.
“all-white country club”
the first time i saw that i thought my calendar must be off. i thought it was 2006, not 1956. unless ned was the membership president and was personally turning away “the black folk” i really can’t imagine this resonates with anyone (any one except the desperate leiberman folk who will latch onto any non-issue). as sharpton said in his remarks, real issues like the war are what voters are looking at.
morning mommybrain - new wig here.

I’ll be spending the weekend doing whatever the West Hartford campaign office wants/needs. Anyone in need of a place to stay is welcome. You can email me at stallnine at gmail dot com.

Steve Gilliard really slammed the insulting nature of RGJoe’s little race-bait flyer, as I expect Al Sharpton will do in what he characterizes to TPM as a “private conversation with Lieberman before he goes to Connecticut to campaign for Lamont tomorrow:

It is a very interesting day on the boards - home today because I feel not-so-great, but the upside is getting to follow all the comments real time, rather than hurriedly skimming to catch up at the end of the day.
that “framing” article is pretty cool- I am interested to see its points applied in other races.
The spelling error is suspicious, no?
OK. Just finished listening to spazeboy’s mp3 of the Lamont Race on “On Point.”
Really well worth a listen. The callers were great. McJoan was superb. The DLC guy was lame. lame, lame. He just could not get off his Rovian “leftie bloggers are evil” meme.
What I wanted McJoan or someone to point out to him was that why shouldn’t bloggers have opionions and voice them. Why is it that so many Dems have fallen for the Coulterish idea that “lefties” are the only people in this country who should not be “allowed” to influence public policy? WTF is wrong with making an attempt to boot a public official, who does not represent your own views, out of office?
If I do not like the way my elected public officials represent me, then it is my responsibility, as a citizen of a democracy, to try to replace him or her with someone who is in alignment with my firm convictions.

Oh, and about that On Point show. One of the callers made an excellent point. which is that he has been pissed off at Lieberman since 2000! That he didn’t fight hard enough in Florida. One wonders when one sees the fire in Gore these days, how much Lieberman in a behind-the-scenes way sabotaged the effort to get the votes counted in FL.
After all, his very own Senate seat was safe and sound (though it is instructive to remember that had he become the VP, it would’ve been turned over to a Rethug by the CT governor), and he could’ve already have been fantasizing about running in 2004. Like, on a certain level, he was glad Gore lost, because it served his ambitious purposes. But then, 2004 didn’t work out like he hoped and he has been in a bad mood ever since.
fuck the secondhand info from opensecrets — I just posted the official US Government Federal Election Commission document page !

Add to that this insight from Josh’s TPM about Joe and 2000, it’s an eye-opener:
So what we have here is a pol, running for veep who in his unbounded ego and hubris thinks he’s better than the no. 1 man on the ticket. So instead of fighting for the ticket and the party, he sabotages it, hoping he’ll be able to run as no. 1 in ‘04. What a backstabbing prick. But wait, it gets worse:
This explains a lot. Here is a selfish, double dealing, disloyal opportunist who thinks only of himself and then turns nasty when he finds out that is high opinion of himself is not shared by others.
This, in a nutshell is why he is so disliked, and why he must be defeated.
