In 2004, the same people who brought you the Drinking Liberally and Laughing Liberally networks saw a need, and had the talent and determination to step in to meet that need. The result was the smashing success of an initiative called Do More Than Vote:
Beginning in May of 2004, the leaders of Cosmopolity, a New York based organization dedicated to providing easy entrance into progressive involvement, worked with over a dozen local activist groups to convene bi-weekly meetings named (with tongues fully in-cheek) the "micro-summit" (now called the "Liberal League"). At these meetings, local progressive leaders of burgeoning activist groups working on the ‘04 election shared their plans, opportunities, and needs in order to coordinate.
One of the main problems identified was the scarcity of outlets available in the immediate NYC area for the mass of people seeking to volunteer in the presidential campaign. There were a number of groups that had the ability to take people to swing states or use volunteers in phonebanks, but they frequently did not fill up their capacity. And there were also a number of groups that had large numbers of ready volunteers, but few outlets for them to make a difference.
Enter Do More Than Vote (DMTV).
Cosmopolity members created DMTV in order to connect ready volunteers with groups that had the capacity to use them effectively. The project consisted of a "hotline" that people could call and a simple website listing opportunities to volunteer. The project was a success- in only eight weeks DMTV helped thousands of New Yorkers get active.
So what does this have to do with 2006? They are expanding the program to new cities: Philadelphia and San Francisco. With your local help, they can get rolling in even more cities before the midterm elections in November:
Now, in 2006, Democrats are faced with another round of crucial elections. Do More Than Vote is back and we’re bigger, yet simpler, than before. We’re already up and running in New York, Philadelphia, and San Francisco, and will be expanding to several other cities by Labor Day.Remember, all of us can afford some time and money. But, none of us can afford another two years of a Republican controlled Congress or state house.
Click here to get involved in New York, Philadelphia, or San Francisco.
Click here to start a Do More Than Vote in your city.
Click here if you need help, or have questions or feedback.
Democrats can win if we Do More Than Vote!
We all know how critical it is to take back at least one chamber of Congress this Fall. We can do it, but we have to work, work, work. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option: remember how you felt after the 2004 presidential elections? If we had done more, all across the country, from helping people get to polls to watching the polls themselves, could we have avoided the insanity of these last two years, and the two more we still have coming? Not to make too fine a point of it, but President George W. Bush is, in some sense, all of our responsibility, whether we voted for him or not. Let’s turn our anger, our hope and our thirst for justice into action.
I’m excited to say we’ve developed a strong relationship with the great people at Do More Than Vote and look forward to working with them through the Roots Project. Once we’re ready (in a few short weeks) to make that new community site public, we’ll all have some very serious infrastructure the like of which has never been built or seen before. In the meantime, please get involved with DMTV in New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco, and become part of their network to help them get up and running in other places before November.

VOLUNTEERZ, by Neddie Dingo!
(((((PACH)))))
Whats up…dueling threads?
Pach,
This is great. Really great.
I have election protection work that needs lots of volunteers. So, I am very excited to learn of this recruitment effort.
thank you. Believe me. I can suck up as many volunteers in NYS as anyone can produce. We will train, we will deploy.

“This won’t be a very organized post. But I wanted to catalog, in one place (hopefully with updates) the many different levers of power that leaders around the world are trying to use to get Israel and the Bush Administration to agree to a cease fire. Thus far, it seems like everyone has whispered threats. But thus far, no one has acted on that threat. Who will act first? And when they do, how will it alter the power structure in the Middle East?
Israel Forces Condi to Prove She’s Got Sway
After the Qana bombing, it appears that Condi tried to force Israel to accept a “pause.” The IDF appears to have refused to announce the pause. And soon after Condi got Olmert’s agreement to a “pause,” he issued public declarations that the pause was not a cease fire; the cabinet approved expanded operations in Lebanon. Olmert seems to be calling Condi’s bluff, challenging her to get Bush to take action himself. He surely knows Condi is losing credibility quickly, to the Neocons’ advantage, and that by obviously ignoring her entreaties, he may be able to undercut any efforts to reel Israel in.
Abdullah Threatens Oil?
Saudi King Abdullah has now twice asked Bush to get more active in the peace process in the Middle East, and the Saudi Ambassador continues to call for action.
He noted that two months ago, Prince Saud al-Faisal, the Saudi foreign minister, brought a letter to Bush from King Abdullah, “advocating an end to the process (of Mideast peacemaking) and instead, an implementation of peace.”
“We require a sustainable peace,” Turki added.
“The President expressed excitement and willingness but, alas, there was no follow through,” Turki said.
One week ago, Saud, again in Washington, gave Bush another letter from Abdullah “requesting he act to help save Lebanon and its people from the terrible ordeal they are suffering. The actions of the U.S. in this matter are of vital importance.”
Saudi Arabia continues to press Washington and the United Nations for an immediate cease-fire backed by an international force but “cannot stand by as our neighbors and friends suffer brutal transgressions born of a war not of their own making” and has donated millions of dollars in aid, he said.
There have been Shiite protests in Saudi Arabia, which may pressure the Saudis to get more insistent with the US. But so far, even our oil dealer has yet to force the issue.

ayldt at 7 – I can only speak for my own local experience, but here in the Sacramento area the answer is definitely yes. Union groups and non-union supporters worked together to defeat the special election initiatives last year, and are working together again on various races for November.
If those in your area know you’re pro-union, I can’t imagine they’d turn you away.
And, Pach – thanks for the heads-up on this; another great tool!
Why aren’t you talking about Mexico??? We could learn a lot from Obrador. 500,000 people camping out in the streets of Washington, D.C. would get someone’s attention, by God.
Sharpton blasts Lieberman for racist flyer…
Have just sent them an email.
Passionate and dedicated people make things happen. Great job Pach.
And what about Poland? Don’t forget Poland.
Juan, what are you talking about?
Please provide a link and a less disrespectful tone.
Have you contributed to FDL via paypal yet?
If this is an event you know something about, you can comment about it and educate us all. That’s why FDL invested so heavily in this state of the art comments section.
Ditto, also sent DMTV an email. We are already doing GOTV efforts here, would offer us another outreach vehicle for volunteers to get engaged. The office is ready, the equipment set up, the phone and walk lists available on demand, precinct data ready and key precincts targeted…all we need are more warm bodies and DMTV would help fill that gap.
Hope they’re going to be able to keep up with the demand! ;-)
I don’t live in one of the Do More than Vote cities and do not have the time right now to start a chapter, but I live in an area that has always had an active Democratic Party organization. I used to do a lot of volunteer work but have not done so much in recent years. Reading Crashing the Gate and attending YearlyKos, in addition to reading FDL and participating in the Roots Project, made me want to get more involved locally. Today my wife and I will to to the polling place and vote for ourselves for the offices of precinct committeeman and precinct committeewoman. Election to these positions will get us in on the ground floor of the local Democratic Party, and put us on the list of people who will get called most often for volunteer activities. In addition, I live in the state capital and have already started to do volunteer work at the state Democratic headquarters on get-out-the-vote. It feels good to be part of the process and to be doing something. Do More than Vote sounds like a good thing, and I would encourage people to participate in it. One way or another, the volunteer opportunities are out there if you are willing to go and find them.

Well, unfortunately, No.
There were demonstrations approaching that size before the war and just last September in DC.
When the media wasn’t ignoring them, it was vastly understating the size of the crowds.
I admire the Mexican people for marching, and the Mexican media for reporting it.
Great photo there, Pach. One of my arguments for keepinig that old style voting machine is that upon leaving the booth you get to yank the lever with a vengeance. It’s a very satisfying, cathartic experience- BAM!

John Casper — Farr was a fellow Salon blogger at one time; he’s gone into the diaspora like me now that Salon has dropped the ball with its blogs.
But it seems odd that he’d do this, not entirely convinced it’s him. We’ve had a persistent rash of concern trolls, usually one popping up within the first 1/3 of a new thread, asking why we’ve forgotten Poland or what have you.
It’s hot, the kids are cranky (God help them, I don’t know if they’ll make it through the summer without bloodshed), the grassroots stuff is getting tougher and under pressure with the primary mere days and hours away…concern trolls are really pushing their luck right now. Just sayin’.

Mixed messages from Israel. All this in a single article.
The Prime Minister
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Tuesday that Israel is “winning the battle” in its 21-day offensive against Hezbollah guerillas in southern Lebanon.
He said he had never promised the Israeli people that the offensive would destroy all Hezbollah’s missiles, but said the threat from the Shi’ite group had been massively reduced.
The Defense Minister
Defense Minister Amir Peretz on Tuesday said “a terror organization cannot be completely obliterated, since it can claim to exist and have influence even when operating very few militants.”
On the other hand, Peretz said, Hezbollah has suffered a significant blow from Israel’s campaign in Lebanon.
The Generals
Senior officers assessed on Monday that the damage sustained by Hezbollah is far greater than originally believed. They said many of the organization’s senior commanders have been killed or wounded.
According to Israeli estimates, Hezbollah still has about 9,000 Katyusha rockets.
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/745131.html
Israel has failed in its strategic objectives. Its military and political leadership are now “expanding” the conflict not to recover these objectives but to give the appearance that they have. War is always perverse but there is something obscene in the idea that what is essentially a face saving exercise will be paid for by the deaths of more Lebanese civilians. There is also the question: At what point does the Israeli policy of emptying border areas cross over into ethnic cleansing?
Have mercy! Our hospital server goes down for one day and then…FOURTEEN new posts?
Thanks for all the birthday love, it was a good day. I always feel like a 7-year-old with great anticipation of what is to come.
All the newborns in the ICU are getting better. We hope one of them can be promoted to the ward so there will be a bed for a new surgical patient. Several kids on the urgent list.
The 13-year-old boy with multiple critical problems is stable today. And that’s good because today’s options were stable, worse, and death. Tomorrow we are hoping for some reaction to the multiple spectrum antibiotic. He probably needs another heart surgery, but first he has to live.
Baby Mittens update??
“War is always perverse but there is something obscene in the idea that what is essentially a face saving exercise will be paid for by the deaths of more Lebanese civilians.”
Substitute “Iraqis” for “Lebanese” and you have one of the best reasons for opposing U.S. policy in Iraq. Add “and American servicemenbers” and it is even better.

Don’t forget Poland.
Scooter’s memory expert, Bjork, will testify that he never forgot Poland. Or if he did, it was because he didn’t know about Poland to start with. Or that others were mistaken about the Poles, and Rove confused them with the polls, and in the end everyone agreed that politics, like polish sausage, was something you didn’t really want to watch being made – so you should just forget it if you know what’s good for you.

As a seminary student, I worked as a chaplain in an ICU. As you might guess, I spent much more time working with family, friends, and hospital staff than the patients themselves, as they were usually quite out of it or up to only limited visitation.
I only spent a summer doing this, many years ago, but the experience has stuck with me in some surprising ways. My hat’s off to you, egregious, and to all the nurses and others working away in that far-off ICU (and in ones much closer to home)!
Funny you should say ornery. My hillbilly dad once got tired of answering How are you? with Fine, and started answering Mean and ornery, just to see people’s reactions.
That is funny because when people ask me how I am ,I always reply, ‘As ornery as ever’.Amazing the reactions I get.

One of the interesting things about the Russians is that when they ask you how you are, they really do expect an honest answer. If you ask them how they are, they stop, think about it for a moment and then actually tell you. It totally shakes you out of your morning-addled somnambulance when someone says they are doing “Poorly” instead of “Fine” hehe.
And really makes you think about how shallow so many of our conversations are over here. How many of them are just pro forma dialogues, with little content.
Mary @ 37
I think the line in the article about a supoena for Miller refers to a hypothetical future one, rather than anything currently outstanding.
I’m not military, but I’m guessing that there is a DOD policy that says “you can’t retire while any DOD investigations are pending against you.” This is to avoid the prospect of someone resigning their way out of a stretch in Leavenworth.
Miller may have a lot to answer for, but I don’t think he’s getting any favors on being allowed to retire (assuming that all DOD investigations were completed, and completed properly). It sounds more like SOP for retirements to me.
Of course, those are two big assumptions . . .
[I’m familiar with this from my work in clergy sexual abuse cases. Many churchbodies are adding something like this to their in-house rules for clergy, to avoid clergy resigning rather than facing charges of misconduct.]
Thanks JohnC. I’m not looking to campaign for or lobby anyone (Waxman is really the good guy in the trio, but is also involved in a gazillion other things – like Conyers)
Just an answer on the subpoena. Davis signed it and the request came from those three, so that’s why I thought one of theif offices would have a fairly fast answer. Kucinich was very active with Shays on the whistleblower subcommittee, so he may have an idea as well, but I mentioned those 3 just bc I thought it was something their office staff would know about, even if they are out campaigning.
I think that with the subpoena itself getting press, it’s odd that there’s been no follow up. I’m guessing maybe an extension was granted ??? but don’t know, and if it was, it would be nice to know the new “when”.
The electronic email system each of them and Kucinich have bounce me back to my reps instead of letting my email through.

Kevin @ 36,
All the folks you’re talking about are not involved in a big primary fight next week.
One thing at a time . . .
And if you want to get folks energized in a place like MO for Claire McCaskill, I’m guessing a big party of progressives in CT next Tuesday night might make folks in MO a little anxious to get in on some of that action come November. Call it a “Farewell to (Jim) Talent Contest”
Peterr – I don’t think there was anything in the article about a subpoena for Miller ???? I re-read and don’t see that.
Miller’s resignation was being held while there were some active investigations. He took the 5th on one, then testified in another.
In the interim, a Senate subcommittee (Shays Kucinich) has been investigating retribtution against whistleblowers, including in particular a young soldier (Provenance? I’ll have to check spelling on his name but a bit of his story is included in the letter from Conyers on the 26 statutes Bush has broken, up at TPM). That soldier has had a few things to say about senior leaders, policy, briefings and other things in connection with Abu Ghraib. Miller’s and Sanchez names have come up.
Rumsfeld has had many requests to turn over docs, refuses to even reply with a letter, so in a shocking turn – he got subpoena’d July 4 or 5. The return date for the subpoena was July 14, but I haven’t heard anything on it. Now the Miller retirement is happening before that committee and subcommittee can go through the docs – if they were turned over – or fight to get them turned over. The Army is reserving that Miller will have to testify — but ONLY with respect to a completely different committee as best I can tell – Warner’s committee. Which hasn’t subpoena’d docs and never will while he handles it.
So the committee with a subpoena out with respect to testimony including Miller’s involvement isn’t mentioned, the committee that isn’t paying any attention to anything is mentioned. I thought that odd.
And I’d like to know what Rumsfeld is doing.
Hope that’s more clear.
Oh gosh. Things are getting curioser and curioser. Naveed Haq, the “disgruntled Muslim shooter” had actually recently converted to Christianity and had been baptized.

Just up at TPM election central, Greg Sargent talks with Sharpton: Sharpton Blasts Lieberman For Racial Flyer.
Mary –
I was referring to the “if ever called as a witness” line that you highlighted.
Thanks for clearing up the two committees stuff. But I’m still confused on one point. Even if Miller’s retired, he’s still subject to testify before a congressional committee if that committee orders him to do so, just as anyone else would be.
And you made the understatement of the year here: “And I’d like to know what Rumsfeld is doing.”
Wouldn’t we all!
Proof that Gerstein, while either working or not working for RGJoe, takes his lessons from Rove:
From Greg Sargent’s TPM interview with the Rev. Sharpton.

I say, theoretically, not to imply Anna is not on top of things, but because the dems party being what is it is, communication is , well not always so good.
Try Anna. If not let me know and I will see if I can reach out a different way. She is supposed to be the central point though
Kinda OT: RE: New buttons and features for commenting.
Love the new features. Posting is so much easier, faster and hassle-free.(Although I must confess I will miss the visits from the Spell Check Goddess…)
If I may offer a humble suggestion for linking content. There appears to be two main types of links: data/news/statistics and Netroot oriented initiatives.
With Netroot activities gaining more ground and currency, perhaps it is worth considering having comments that wish to draw attention to these links, use a specific Netroot link button that will allow readers and activists to distinguish this link type from other info links upon viewing/reading.
Something in a green maybe?
Anyways, there’s my 2 cents for the best interface in comment-land…
Gen. Miller, IIRC, is directly responsible for bringing the Gitmo torture techniques over to Abu Ghraib. Dog leashes and all. To think that he has been honored, and not prosecuted, is par for the course, but is an abomination!
I have a hard time believing he’ll ever testify truthfully if called as a witness. He’d have to give back his medal, for starters.
The way it is with this gang is take the blackest character and give him the loftiest honor. It’s really from the Rove playbook all the way down the line. GRRRR.
I know I’m not saying anything new, but just felt like venting.

Peterr – the “wouldn’t he be required to testify” is kind of what I was getting at — why does the Army mention it specifically for Warner’s committee, which is anthropmorphization of do nothing, but not for the committee that actually has a subpoena out. Strikes me as odd. Didn’t mean to hijack.

Near the end of the Politics of Hope thread, Bruce posted a comment suggesting a discussion of the Maryland primary races.
Since your sorta in the ‘hood, maybe you could invite him to put together a summary, so the local FDL readers could get more involved in those races? Just a thought . . .

Froomkin’s headline makes a great contrast with the title of this post. Pach’s calling for us to “Do more than vote,” while Dan looks at Dubya’s job with the title “Beats Working“
About the only thing missing from Dubya’s Sunday night dinner in Miami – just hours after the news broke about the dozens of women and children killed in Qana – was a reading of “My Pet Goat.”

How in the hell did I get included in that high octane lineup?
By the by, Jane and Siun, have not heard back yet about election protection for next week. Any news from the campaign?

Divine Internvention.
Adie – is this the link to what you saw on EFF? https://secure.eff.org/site/Advocacy?alertId=239&pg=makeACall
Adie,
the link worked. I an I alread ycalled Schumer’s office. Got a very polite staffer (sounded like a grown up not the usual kid)
When i told him what I was calling about, I could hear him hold his breath as if expecting yelling. he had give him a set of answers to questions, i think they have a tally sheet for this.
He seemed pleased to hear that I was opposed.
So, New Yorkers, your senator must need some political cover to justify doing the right thing. Use Adie’s link. It will give you the phone number and a lovely script to use.
Help out big lug to do what we want him to do.
Call Chuck,
Mary
re: the general’s retirement. Long, long ago i was admitted to practice before the court of military justice. I vaguely recall that there is a difference in terms of the jurisdiction the court has ove active military or those in a status that makes them subject to recall, and those whoa re truly out.
I am super vauge on this though. So, I THINK the deal he struck with the army was to agree to continue to be subject to their jurisdaction.
Also with respect to testifying before Congress–the specific subpeopna. There is a big difference between when you are testifying as your own self (you can say what you believe to be true) and when you are testifying on behalf of … or in the capacit of one who holds a particular office.
Then your testimony is supposed to be the company line. So, it may be an effort to kep him from telling what he knows.
Sorry to bum you out this way
Re: puppy
I am at office. just called home and spoke to littleprop. Puppy has had 3 servings of H2O, has only nursed twice that we know of, and continues to be uninterested in playing and only wants to sleep.
adie, lhp, just called chuckie schumer’s office to register my opposition to the Specter and Dewine bills. They asked for my adress, BTW, so callers, have a NY one ready!
LHP – good news is that the campaign has an experienced team here on that … it looks well covered and I’m impressed.
Thank you for your offer … that was awesome!
Come ON, Baby Mittens! Heal, you little darlin’!

Your “entitlement” link works for me now, I have no idea why it didn’t when I tried it several times earlier.
looseheadprop @ 12:17 pm (#98) – If that’s the case, then I wonder what “subject to recall” means. I was told that general officers are always subject to recall. Apparently, it goes with the rank.
Of course, many rules about accountability in government seem to be changing …
Hope baby mittens pulls through.

Thanks. I’ve been pestering so constantly, I didn’t send a repeat today, but I have gotten responses back from most committee members in the past week or so, s’more even today (including a duh-whut? don’worry, I gottit – from Frist – in snailmail!). Clinton & several others just sent me canned “got yer msg” mush, no details.
DeWine (OH – my state) especially, in a very tight tight race with Sherrod Brown, & trailing (yay!), is rather attentive to providing prompt answers. But I had to write 2-3X before he got down to specifics. I think we might have a chance to “turn” him, even tho he’s supposedly sponsoring. Oh, I also wrote Sherrod, telling him what I told DeWine to do. Wouldn’t be atall surprised if BOTH weren’t at our county fair THIS WEEK. Hm-m-m. Oh, you just KNOW I have to go. Wish me luck.
Even tho the EFF didn’t mention em, I also sent a sharp poke off to our member in the House. Just got back an almost incomprehensible e-mail from Ralph Regula’s ofc – no formatting at all, just a long string of single-sentence repug talking points strung together. I guess I should be thankful for the fact that staff at least left the periods tw’ the barely related sentences. Oh, & they inserted a sentence near the end assuring us Regula’s got things well in hand. Uh huh. yeah, sure. whatever. Hubby got exact same. (we both pester separately ;->)

Hey all: George Stern here from Do More Than Vote. Thanks to everyone who’s emailed us so far. If I haven’t already replied to your email, you can expect a reply soon. We’re thrilled at the demand we’ve been receiving so far today and I’m confident we’ll be able to keep up. The interest is exciting! If we all Do More Than Vote, we can elect Democrats nationwide this November. If you haven’t already contacted us and you want to learn more or start a chapter in your city, shoot us an email: domorethanvote@gmail.com
I wish I could be optomistic, but the Democrats STILL don’t get it. I’m just not seeing an alternative that I could care about? Look at California, Angelides? What a joke! Until the SYSTEM IS FIXED, or people actually take steps to fix the system, all I can do is be apathetic. Nonetheless, I do plan on drinking into oblivion tonight.
Leslie P – what is it you find so wrong with Angelides?
lhp, Stephen Parrish CPA and any others I missed.
Sorry for the totally EPU’d comment. Had to dash off & rescue other projects around here. It’s wicked hot and . . . Didn’t mean to post & run, but duty called.
YES Stephen. That’s the EFF link I got. (among others of course – every org. is looking for $$ & for you to sic them onto other fresh contacts. what are we coming to?!)
lhp: good on ya! I just don’t do well calling, but I e-mail a lot. I find it helps to repeat & refine, & never give up; eventually something in most political offices triggers a response to [he/she who just won’t go away, and who makes sense, drat ‘em] – heh heh.
So I do think it takes all of us in our various ways, often refusing to take “duhno/wha?” for an answer, and keeping after them, politely but persistently pushing to the point that they finally get us on a list of folk who MUST receive an answer that makes sense; otherwise, we’ll be right back in their faces again, (& these days they surely worry where else we might go with reports of their non-answers).
I’m sure this strategy gains a lot of its strength from the hard work put in by those “on the ground” who conduct rallies, and make “kiss floats” & such. Many of us just don’t have the time, or maybe the energy (puff puff) to do the ground work but, by gum, I’d SWEAR efforts in various guises add up to more than the sum total of [those who move in lockstep according to talking points handed out by gurus like rover].
So, we trek on, separately & together. Must drive some folks out there nuts, (I hope).
