In case you were wondering, Cowboy Diplomacy is back, says Robin Wright in the WaPo. Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the bunker.
And what does Froomkin have to say about that?
President Bush's "moment of opportunity" in the Middle East is increasingly looking like an opportunity for disaster.Bush's official position is that some blood-spilling in the Middle East is worth it in pursuit of the region's positive transformation....
In the best of circumstances, Bush would be running the risk of being considered callous. But in the current circumstances, he runs the risk of being considered both callous and delusional.
By almost no stretch of the imagination is the current conflict strengthening Bush's hand or advancing democracy. Rather, it appears to be emboldening Bush's enemies.
It's increasingly accepted wisdom in Washington that what's going on in the Middle East right now is a "proxy war" between the U.S. and Iran. But even through that lens, the U.S. appears to be losing....
Peter Baker writes in the Washington Post that Haass "laughed at the president's public optimism. 'An opportunity?' Haass said with an incredulous tone. 'Lord, spare me. I don't laugh a lot. That's the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. If this is an opportunity, what's Iraq? A once-in-a-lifetime chance?' "
Go. Read all of Froomkin's White House Briefing today. And tell me that we shouldn't rename the whole mess "the war to create more terrorists."
Great. Just great.
The Democratic leadership in the House and the Senate sent President Bush a letter telling him that things are not working in Iraq -- and that staying the course is an idiotic policy, as a result of his failures. It purports to speak for Democrats in both houses of Congress but, to be certain, I think an enterprising journalist ought to ask Joe Lieberman straight out if he'd going to side with the Republican caucus on this one, just to be sure.
(As penance for posting something this irritating, I give you the trailer from Spirited Away, my favorite Hiyao Miyazake anime. And also, this fantastic link to a piece that Howie did on CSNY.)

Christy!
Democratic leadership…united? Wow. About fucking time! Go Ned.
Letters of this kind would carry a great deal more weight with me if, in addition to pointing out the obvious about the untenable nature of the U.S. position in Iraq, they frankly acknowledged the immense moral responsibility that the U.S. bears for the unspeakable mess caused by the unprovoked invasion of Iraq.
This inability to see the other side of a situation is what inevitably leads to tragedies being compounded because those involved can’t bring themselves to see it differently.
Well is the dummies book photoshopped in? :-)

spitty at 5 — I believe so. This little photo appeared in my in-box, and the sender asked not to be attributed — but, yes, I believe it’s a photoshop. lol
the Terrorism for Dummies is obviously a large-type edition … that means somebody will have to read it our loudly to him
large-type and pop-up
The Terrorist Creation Project is the one “success” that this administration can legitimately claim.
I take very little consolation in the fact that: 1) W’s foreign policies have been a complete and utter disaster; 2) there does not appear to be a means to effectively check him; and 3) we have him for two more years.
Impeach. ASAP. Please.
Wow, I’m actually caught up with all y’all!
Christy, yee-haw (with mocha sprinkles) is the only foreign policy PNAC has. Puppet W was handpicked, with Powell/Rice enabling, by the Schultz/Bechtel cartel. And wow, is Ms. Rice over her head — getting disinvited to Beirut after the Qana bombing, while saying she hadn’t planned to go talk withthe Lebanese at all! Time to come home to your “husband — er, the President,” Condi.
“I wouldn’t come to your party even if you invited me.”
Third-grade retorts are not a foreign policy either, but it’s PNAC’s backup.
Stay the course, stay the course…
The fucking rudder’s broken!
We need some grownups in charge of this ship of state. The fools are heading for a reef and stoking the engines as fast as they can.
[Donning tin hat]
…but doesn’t this seem like the right play for the neocons in a warped way? Let Bush think he’s doing fine. Let him think he’s knows what he’s talking about. Then have a chunk of reality smack him square in the mouth so he will become reactionary and defensive…then lay out the plans for Iran/Syria on his desk so he can show the world how tough he is.
[Tin hat removed.]
Or, things are just as bad as they look and the whole thing is going to go to complete shit, then he will do the one thing he’s always been consistent about…run to daddy for help. At this point we’d be lucky to have HW in there. Unfortunately, Bush’s “daddy” right now is Cheney and he’s got enough control as it is. Which goes back to my tin hat theory, because the neocons want the whole thing to go to shit so they will have an excuse to start killing more brown people.

The House GOP of the last century pretty well tarnished our only solution for the runaway Unitary Executive, impeachment. By unpacking that toolbox during The Great American Fellatio Crisis, the GOP made sure that low-info American voters’ reaction, when impeachment was really called for the next round, would be, “There they go again!”
========
Had Enough?
========
The “Global War on Terror(ism)” has been a farce from the beginning. It’s all part of a bogeyman the neocons want to create to get their war on. Now it seems the double-down approach to trying to win back from the loss in Iraq is going to backfire.
When Reagan was president, terrorism around the world increased. It’s worse now. When will people wake up to the realization that the GOP approach to international affairs is dangerous to the world and Americans?
Nice use of the word “emboldening” against Bush. But I find it curious that Froomkin doesn’t say “emboldening America’s enemies,” he says “emboldening Bush’s enemies.”
Reading Bush’s rambling as quoted in Froomkin’s column really made my brain hurt. How can someone live being so impervious to anything he doesn’t want to hear? Perhaps the saddest thing is how he firmly believes that his ideology will “defeat” their ideology, without his ever having to worry about the messy details involved. It’ll just happen, don’t you see? Have faith!
I’d be more worked up about his inability to remember that Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority are democracies (imperfect, but still), but I already knew that in his conception, a democracy means nothing more than a place where they have elections, and the right people win, regardless of how the votes add up.

Some days, I just wonder WTF good it does me to have Bill Nelson “representing” me in the Senate at all. Just received this email from him.
Far as I can tell, neither he nor I have the first clue what that’s about or why either of us bothered . . .
I just deleted all of my post because I am too angry and am afraid my language was over the line. I will just read for a while and hope for anger will tone down a bit.

To add to a long list of appalling statements, Rice talked yesterday about how there was now a “consensus” for a ceasefire. Which is a pretty damn Orwellian way of saying that the US was blocking a ceasefile before, and maybe now we’d let it go through.
And sadly, once she got on the phone back to neocon-land, it turned out that wasn’t even true, either.

“One among a hundred” is the last refuge of the enabling scoundrel Senator in the opposition party. DiFi puts it in her letters, too, and her staffer trotted it out several times in our April Rootster meeting.
When the staffer said it the second time, I thought of Senator Jeffords’ party-switch earlier this century, as well as Senator Sam Ervin’s leadership of the Watergate Committee during the last. (Wish I’d gotten that word in during the meeting.)
One actually need only look to Connecticut’s junior Senator to see the damage “one among one hundred” can do….

PERFECT!
Christy, You are on fire today.
Don’t it make your brown hair Redd?
A lot of folks keep yelling for impeachment of Bush. Myself included. I want to see Bush and other Republicans held accountable for all the lying and treachery in the run-up to, and the grossly inept prosecution of the Bush Iraq horror war. But in the interest of justice, a demand should be made that ALL Democrats who supported Bush on Iraq and continue to do so, most prominent among those, Joe Lieberman, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton, be held to the same standard of accountability. Anything less would be unfair and preposterous. Bush should be impeached and those Democrats in collusion with the neo-con hell which is now the Middle East, starting with Lieberman, should be fired in the up-coming elections. I am absolutely fed up with Democrats who continue to support the Bush foreign policy of force in the Mideast!
lotus @ 29
I knew there was a reason that put me near tears.
Funny how being “one vote out of a hundred” isn’t worth very much - until one of these hundred comes looking to be reelected. You know the lines from all the GOTV materials:
“Every vote is critical . . .”
“Every vote is important . . .”
“Don’t think that your vote doesn’t matter . . . “
I suppose somewhere there’s some fine print that I missed: “. . . unless you’re just one of a hundred senators.”
I understand that a senator can’t wave a magic wand and make something happen, but good grief! If Bill Nelson or DiFi is so concerned about being only one of a hundred, they can give up their hopeless jobs and let someone else have a crack at it who thinks that being one of a hundred is a pretty powerful thing.
The train it won’t stop going, no way to slow down.

…now I try to be amused @ 19
Bush’s enemies are not the US’ enemies. Lebanon is a democratically elected government. Why are US-made aircraft and munitions bombing civilians in a democracy? Why are the relatives of Hezbollah rotting in Israeli prisons without a trial or any kind of due process?
I’m not saying Hezbollah is blameless, but Bush has supported policies that have put these people in a situation where they have very little to lose. That’s one of the things that makes them so dangerous.

I remember very well when W/Rove went to SF to interview with Schultz for the job. In a statement after the interview W/Rove were quoted to the effect “we think the interview went well and we have the job”
I wish I had more info on this re: 1.Schultz/Bechtel really seem tangiental to Cheney/Halliburton/NeoCons and yet Condi was clearly sent to keep an eye on W, yet Condi is tangential to the neocons also.
2. W was a dark horse. Jeb was a member of the PNAC and had been developing a political career for years and yet W jumped in at the last minute and got the nod.
3. Are these the two wings of the repubs and W was a preemption of the neocons?
I so look forward to Katherine Harris loosing. We need a replacement for the ol’ Tammy Faye pic.

Christy,
I suppose since Froomkin’s a M-F kind of guy, he has to post his “Recipe for Disaster” column today instead of on the Saturday “Pull Up A Chair” threads . . .
The letter you mentioned from the Democratic Leadership to Bush is nice, but there are only two scenarios that will force any change around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. One is for a prominent republican - preferably a committee chair - to sign a letter like that, signalling that investigations and accountability will follow if there is no change of course. The other is for a change of power in the halls of Congress.
Me, I’m betting/hoping/praying/working for the latter.

Methinks this KHarris rug-pulling is the first step in the dance to have Jebbie step into the Senate race “for the good of the party and the nation.”
Also, what’s with all the “tar-baby” talk? Methinks this is inner-circle GOP code. Clearly SnowBlow forgot not to use it, as did Romney. The excuse that “he never knew it had a racial connotation” didn’t fly in May — it certainly has no legs in July. Unless they keep saying it through the filter, knowing the base knows exactly what they mean.

That letter though is from back in May…it just got leaked by someone. While I wouldn’t put it past the Florida Republican Party itself to leak it for political purposes, the timing seems to be off for. This is so easy, even the maroons that date Jenna and not-Jenna can understand it.
See, Bush is the Decider — and the Decider has deciderated that Israel bombing Lebanon helps the Decider and Deadeye Dick get their wars on with Syria and Iran.
That is all that matters — the Decider has deciderated, and no facts or opinions or information that doesn’t conform with the Decider’s decideration will be tolerated.

Just to put in a caveat, emptywheel has speculated that Rummy and DeadEye are driving the proxy war with Iran and beating up Condi to accomplish it. In this scenario Bush is caving a little to Condi today.
Also, a lot of stuff yesterday suggested to me that Israel figured out that Hezbollah was a hell of a lot tougher to defeat than they had thought. Israel’s hawks may not be so happy about the proxy war either. WAG Alert (Wild Ass Guesses)
Read Froomkin and I have to ask is it possible the Bushman can be more delusional. I think he thinks it is the End Times. I tried to edit my comments in #3 but it froze up (at least on my end). Just wanted to say that Yahoo had front-paged “Key Dems call for Iraq withdrawal” and within the story:
“The recent letter is dated July 30 and signed by every top Democrat on committees with oversight of military, intelligence and international affairs. It is significant because it solidifies the Democrats’ position and presents a unified front as members head into election season.”
Msnbc also has a smaller headline about the delayed Congressional report on Iraq war run-up. The report painted Sen. Roberts as the stone-walling ass that he is.
Unfortunately, the media is only waking up in small spasms. Same as with the Dems, I’ll take better late than never, but to avoid W’s suicide leap we need urgent action NOW.
