Over the weekend Ned filmed his first video blog. Since Joe Lieberman doesn’t want to talk about his war in Iraq, I guess it’s up to the rest of us.
If you think there is more to be said on the topic and things aren’t going quite as swimmingly as Joey Short Ride seems to believe, you can join the YouTube revolution by shooting your own video and uploading it to the "Iraq Conversation" YouTube group. You can also contribute your thoughts by filling out a form over at Ned’s site.
Glenn Greenwald offers his thoughts :
It really seems as though the "plan" now in Iraq is just to step back and allow the whole country to collapse. That impression is strongly bolstered by the fact that war proponents seem eager to ignore Iraq and focus on other matters just as the civil war and destruction of that country seems to be reaching the point of no return. War proponents continuously argued that chaos, violence and instability in Iraq would be a grave threat to American security and a great ally of Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. And yet exactly that situation has resulted from our invasion, and now the proponents of the war — and apparently much of the media — want to just forget about all of that.
And Digby thinks the journalists who will descend on Connecticut like a swarm of locusts this week have a unique opportunity:
If I were a real journalist and I had a chance to chat with Joe, I’d ask him if he still thinks that’s true in light of his fellow Senators’ condemnation of Iraqi prime minister Nouri al-Maliki’s remarks about Israel. It seems nobody has yet been able to get him to explain this.
He did attend and applaud Maliki’s speech, but failed to appear afterwards when reporters were asking questions. He’s been so busy bragging about his earmarks and having his campaign place flyers in black neighborhoods accusing Lamont of being a racist (Lee Atwater would be proud) that perhaps he hasn’t had time to weigh in on the most pressing foreign policy issues of the day.
Still, Joe is a man of principle and mid-east policy is his signature issue, so I’m sure he’ll be more than happy to take questions. Joe has been like a proud papa about this new Iraqi government. I’m curious what he thinks of it now, aren’t you?
Maybe I’m just being negative, cranky and unpatriotic here, but I think there is a lot more to say on the topic of Iraq. How about you?
(Special thanks to Spazeboy who shot the video for us and stayed up until the wee hours of the morning editing it.)
Update: Matt Browner-Hamlin has production stills.

ned!
O.K. what happened to my comment? There were no comments on this thread even after I hit ‘refresh comments’. So I typed a long comment and hit submit and I saw my comment. Then I hit F5 and there are 3 first comments without mine.
I thought if I was in moderation it would tell me that. Oh well. All I said was that Jane is not cranky she lives in reality.
Here are a few still pics from Ned’s videoblog shoot. Consider it a “Making of…” type special.
Ned talks it out.
Setting up the shot.
Talking about the video blog.
Dayum, Ned comes across well.
Quick, over there! it’s……
is it
a) another missing white woman
b) another freeway sniper, or
c) another shark attack
Iraq who?
This Ned Video is GREAT. And don’t we love the speed and breadth of the TOOBZ Go Lamont. Spread the waves of cultural change……
I’d love to see that flyer and tie it around Lieberman’s neck along with his other dubyatrosses.
Is that for real!?!
Glenn on Saturday -
“That really is the essence of neoconservativsm. It’s nothing more noble or complex than a base belief that we have to wage as many wars as possible and kill as many people as possible until people are sufficiently fearful of the U.S. that they will comply with our mandates.”
Glenn on Sunday -
“War proponents continuously argued that chaos, violence and instability in Iraq would be a grave threat to American security and a great ally of Al Qaeda”
this non linear, contradictory, and oh so murderous Neo Con crap is driving me nuts – which is it kids ?!?!?!
Mmmmm. . . Spazeboy.
Ned did great. We have good outtakes too, possibly for release later in the week.

He does! Though I am still waiting for his “numa numa” to be absolutely certain! ; )
(love the new features! saves me from my congenital tagging inability)
All Lieberman can say about Iraq at this point is that he did what the thought was right, because everything else he could say would be indistinguishable from what Bush and the rest of that gang are saying. He can’t repeat the Bush talking points going into a Democratic primary, because it proves the case that he is the tool of the GOP.
But watch how loose his lips get if he runs on his own in the general, because he will have to appeal to the voters most likely to buy into the Bush mantra.
What he doesn’t realize is that voters of all affiliations are so opposed to the war that that tactic isn’t going to work any better for him than any other of the misguided, tone-deaf, and ass-backwards tactics that have him standing at the bottom of a hole that is just getting deeper by the day.
Jane,
Back from a week’s vaca5tion in Maine — thank you for all you are doing and for all everyone is doing in Connecticut. It really is inspiring —
Inspiring me to help out some more if I can. I see that in Maura’s post about the Lieberman, non-Union attacks on Lamont, “Maura” indicates Lamont’s phones are not being covered. Is that a small problem or a big one for his offices?
Will contributions help? What?
i just wish it were august 8 so i could finally vote for Ned. until then, there are phone calls to make, doors to knock on, one more letter to the editor.
thanks jane for all you are doing. and spazeboy and maura and ctbob and all the ct bloggers
OT grist for Mary’s mill:

PS What is up with the non-Union Lieberman stuff? Does Ned have a labor expert/liason that is hitting this shit home with them? Lieberman has no ground game without labor.
OK, he has paid GOTV workers, but that dog doesn’t hunt….
And Glenn (brilliant as usual) today:
“That is the central incoherence which lays at the heart of the Bush administration’s neoconservative mission — one minute the objective is to win the “hearts and minds” of Muslims in the Middle East so that there will be less anti-American hatred for Al Qaeda to exploit when recruiting. The next minute the objective is to bomb as many of their countries as possible for their own good and hope that they are appreciative of all the carnage and destruction we are raining down on them in the name of warring against the evil of ’stability’.”
immanentize, it looks like Lieberman has already begun to buy an insanely large ground-game:
“Smith said they now have between 200 and 300 volunteers and paid staff, to canvass daily. Democratic workers in New Haven said the campaign told them it hopes to hire up to 4,000 workers by Election Day.”

Worrying to say the least…
mc at 7:45,

John Casper (21):
Who says bloggers can’t write good? *g*
worrisome more is that enough R voters will reregister at the last minute for the ‘bipartisan’ senator. esp. w/ground game canvassing. I’ll bet they’ve already dialed up (or at least bought the R voting lists) encouraging such a thing.
Al Sharpton will be campaigning for Lamont this week, according to an article in this morning’s NYT. The article said that Lieberman unsuccessfully tried to convince Sharpton not to endorse Lamont.
Time spent listening to Sharpton on the campaign trail is usually time well remembered.
Worrisome fact is Lieberman’s huge money advantage, as much as 3:1. This makes Lieberman’s poor-mouthing comments all that much more hypocritical.

Jane: I’m disturbed that you would say
This country’s original patriots were very, very cranky. Sam Adams, Tom Paine, John Adams, Ben Franklin (when he was not hanging out with the ladies), Tom Jefferson, Jimmy Madison: Difficult times sometimes brought out the worst in their personalities but the best in their efforts. So next time, use a phrase such as:
And thank you for being cranky!
As a Democratic operative told me recently, voting records mean much less than a) public statements and b) committee memberships.
The reason? Votes on issues are usually set by the party leadership, not the pols in question.
Bear that in mind the next time someone touts Lieberman’s “liberal voting record”.
imm, imho, that is scary news.
First it confirmas that Joezo is cash heavy and volunteer light. Are the lists of people that Joezoe’s campaign hires part of the public record? It might be in Ned’s best interest to invest resources in scrutizing those lists, as they may not contain CT’s best and brightest. CT media might be interested in the kind of people their Three term Senator has to pay to work for him the week before the primary.
Don’t forget to check out this field report from Stamford: http://mydd.com/story/2006/7/3…..9#readmore
before I comment, I want you to know jane the new features are nice but really bog down page load
back on topic
here’s what’s frightening
we all believe that oil was the reason we went to war in Iraq…this was flawed logic in the first place since america could be energy independant in five years, but that’s another discussion
if the oil fields opened in Iraq, oil would be cheaper then peanut butter, and while the lower price of the comodity would not initially pay for the war, it would have residual economic impact that might actually bring enough revenue into the economy to make the investment we’ve made with our treasure worth wile..economically (not socially, nor would it mean anything if we developed alternative energy like we were supposed to be doing)
however
the fields in Iraq are closed and that increases the price of oil, which increases the worth of the holdings for the oil industry into the trillions.
how is it POSSIBLE that the oil fields are not to capacity by now?…most people don’t know it, but if oil was excavated to capacity I beiieve Iraq has more oil then saudi arabia
at present we are securing an embassy the size if the vatican in Iraq…WHY ARE WE NOT SECURING THE RESOURCES OF IRAQ?
simple
it is eminently apparent the real purpose right now is to create the shortage of this resource, there is no other explanation, and this shortage sincreaes the value of the holdings of those that are in the oil industry
now, which families and which individuals do we suppose benefits from this shortage of oil?
anybody have any ideas?
this is getting more and more depraved as we get further into the script that the PNAC has us enacting
we are all like marionnettes…we dance with every movement of the stirngs being pulled, we move our jaws just like the ventriloquist has their dummy say whatever he wants his dummy to say
we are such puppets us Americans, look at us dance in time sinc to the mechanations of facist families, organizations and individuals who want nothing but to privatize America and the entire planet
where will we be when this is finally played out?
will we continue to allow our stings to be pulled untill there is nothing left corporations owning and running everything..as ineficient as we see haliburton running Iraq?
or will we act like humans again and finally reclaim our party, our country, our lives?
infoshaman, Jane was just being sarcastic. She and her “Hamshers of the left,” are routinely accused of being unpatriotic and irreligious.
Thanks for your concern though.
mc @ 18
I do not think that this is actually an “incoherence” in policy — it is actually the evidence that there is no policy. I am reading the Alexander Hamilton Biography by Chernow and he says some things about Aaron Burr which fit the entire Bush administration perfectly:
“To serve only politics without policy is no great achievement.”
Even Kissinger said something similar in his op ed yesterday:
Cozumel @ 24
WOW…Not that I don’t believe you, but I wanna see that for myself. It has been so mangled for so long, I ‘can’t imagaine’ there isn’t some kind of fine print caveats included.
Thanks! That might be the goodest news of the day.
(hmmm…does this impact RGJozo’s short ride?)
And Ted Kennedy reminds us in yesterday’s WaPo of what Alito and Roberts said to the Judiciary Committee, how they acted on the Court since they were confirmed, and the sizable gap between the words and the deeds.
Thanks, Joe!

Ooh, new comment thingies!
I’m going to take a nap, but interested parties should listen in to the Al Franken show today, Ned is scheduled to be on around 1pm (East Coast time). If you miss it, I bet that guy who does the Ned Lamont Resource will have it.
Of course–tonight is Colbert and I promise to have a YouTube online within 1/2 hour of the show’s end. This is especially good news for West-coasters who normally would have to wait until 11:30pm local time to catch the spot.

Today’s NYTimes Ned story
was wondering if Senator Schumer has commented on the NYT Lamont endorsement – other than ‘Doh!’
Wow, This place was busy while I was gone!I have to agree that Ned comes across very good. straight to the point and no meandering B.S.
I see I am going to be tech challenged again. New features to figure out.I bookmarked the page so I can go back later and figure this stuff out. Happy Monday everyone.
SharonW at 8:01 am Yes, the deadline for already registered Republicans to change affiliation to vote in the Democratic primary was May 8. Unaffiliated and registered Independents can register as Democrats as late as noon on August 7 to vote in the August 8 Democratic primary.
Jane, fwiw, if Ned is looking for talkingpoints in African American neighborhoods, it’s the history of legalized white supremacy, 1865- 1965, particularly lynching. They know all about it, they are just not used to hearing it from a European American, especially one running for the United States Senate.

wrt R crossovers.
EDIT: struck out.
See the Thread Theorist comment.
Still a few votes here, a few votes there pretty soon you’re talking about a real ‘upset’. But, OTOH, and imho, the likely hood that ‘I’ voters would break for Jozo seems low. But I play Buckner/Berra rulz.
Sharon: I’m pretty sure that late registration is for new or unafilliated people to register to vote in the primary.
Hope so, anyway.

I just read the NYT endorsement given to Ned Lamont which contained this offending gem:
Holy sh*t — what an incredibly stupid thing to say!
I was beyond furious with Al Gore for picking Lieberman as his running mate in `00. Sadly, I have NEVER regretted voting against George Bush while also NOT voting for the 2000 Dem. ticket because it included Joe Lieberman.
Mine was one of the few legitimately “spoiled” presidential ballots that year. (Admittedly, casting my ballot in a state where Al Gore received, by far, one of his highest vote percentages made it far easier for me to cast a “principled” (mis)vote than, for instance, someone living in Fla. or New Hampshire – still it did my soul good).
For such an allegedly pious guy, the torture quote cited in the NYT’s Lamont endorsement editorial is just another example of Lieberman’s proclivity to cluelessly and foolishly dry-hump cowardly GOP lies and wet-kiss their blatant crimes. I don’t know how I missed this particularly offensive and superciliously ridiculous quote that the NYT dredged up in its editorial, but it certainly gave me another in a long, long line of post-Lowell Weicker era blood pressure spikes.
Lieberman’s senate obituary will reflect almost two decades of consistently poor judgment, selfish disloyalty and insouciance toward the bill of rights – especially first amendment freedoms.
Ned Lamont will be so much better for the U.S. on too many issues to count. However, it is Lieberman’s continued involvement in the most violent, treacherous, and morally bankrupt act of intentionally failed policy in U.S. history, the Iraq war, however, where we have no stronger reason to get out the vote for Lamont.

Looking on with considerable interest from London. Quick question: is Connecticut – have I spelled that correctly – nailed to the Diebold cross?
He gets it! I’m so glad someone does. It isn’t that we need another blogger. It’s that we need to have a conversation on our foreign policy. That was the thing that got conveniently skipped during the runup to the war. And now the neo-cons don’t want to bring it it. They want to “stay the course” rather than “cut and run”. That is the battle of slogans rather than a genuine conversation.
This is a great idea. Anyone can join this conversation.

Connecticut is NOT a Diebold state. We are still using the mechanical machines that we’ve used for over 30 years — they are in great condition, and hard to screw up.

kirby … the old machines can be finagled as well as diebold … we used to see the paper slips with the names purposefully misaligned so that particularly senior voters would get confused or they would pull the lever for the name they wanted but the name was not over the proper lever to record their correct vote.

Jane does Lamont have an election protection operation? If he has a Lawyers for Lamont list, I can brief somebody on how to set one up virtually in a week (convenient cause that’s how much time you have)
Did he hire a Conn election attorney? He needs one. if you need recommendations, I can probably get him some names.
You have my email address and CHristy has my phone Number (I will try to email my numbers to you) if you want to see if Lamont wants to set this up.
I can tell you you two thigs to look for;
1)In a primary, the state party is not supposed to take sides or spend $ for one candidate or another, so Lieberman should not be running any GOTV, Election protection or phone banks out of state or county committee offices.
2) Historically, in a primary of an imcumbent, the dirty tricks really come out fst and furious

tvnews is an oxymoron
about the civil-rights flyer:
1. They got burned by their no-union-bug Bill/Joe Button. That disclaimer means it was run off by some cheap hired labor on their office high-speed copy machine.
2. From what I’ve read about the contents, it seems like a legitimate political thing to do. As a young man, Lieberman did good work on civil rights but his ardor cooled in following years. Ned’s fairly-recent membership in an exclusionary country club is also a legitimate issue.
Zergle @ 73
Wow! How utterly Rovarian, the little prick.
Well, I should think that the backing of Maxine Waters and Al Sharpton will certainly lay waste to that form of assault.
BTW, I know a black minister here who absolutely balked at the idea of supporting Lieberman. It wasn’t even a consideration.

TEST 2, 3,
Let me second lhp’s call, with a friendly amendment: candidates need not a single election lawyer, but a whole crew of them.
It’s not just about Diebold (siun’s right: old school machines could be and were hacked by mechanics, not electron pushers). It’s about protecting voter access to the polls, polling place workers doing their jobs properly, preventing improper campaigning in the vicinity of the polling place, and so much more.
And yes, I said lawyerS. On election day, everything happens at once. When you need a lawyer on election day, you need one RIGHT NOW. All too often, you need that lawyer in person, RIGHT HERE. Yes, CT is a lot smaller than most states, but you still want a crew of folks who are up to speed on the local rules of the game, on call at a moment’s notice, and ready to play by Chicago Rules.
Not the “vote early and vote often” stuff – that’s more of a tradition than a rule. Chicago Rules means if they come at you with a knife, you bring a gun. If they bring a friend, you bring five.
Mercy, there’s a BUG in the middle of that word!
From the Stamford Advocate comes a warning to Lamont on his Colbert appearance.
The thing about Colbert is his ability to play a fast as lightening conservative even better than most conservatives, and like most conservatives he is not hampered by how ludicrous his remarks are. The more ludicrous the better the comedy. It makes for an interesting, but daunting to the guest, dynamic.
… if they come at you with a knife, you bring a gun. If they bring a friend, you bring five.
And a Lutheran minister to bless ‘em.
Good morning, our Peterr — up and thinking right off, we see!

Connecticut has never been noted for its paucity of lawyers — with its lively tradition of hotly contested elections, there should be some experienced legal-beagles. Of course, this Primary is in August and the barrister-inventory might be vacation-depleted …
This US News aritcle references an new organization, Lieberwomen co-chaired by someone named Patricia Russo. I am wondering if she is this Patricia Russo
What are the odds that Joe will side with the big telcos against competition of the sort Ned’s company poses?

just screams for graphic interpretation, don’cha think?
I don’t recall in any recent years any question of vote tampering in CT. Moreover, the fact that we produce politicians of various political ilks seems to be proof that the people’s vote really does count here.
We’ve got a Republican governor, but two Democratic (well, 1-1/2) Senators.
Honestly, I just don’t see that as an issue here.
Peterr,
The LawyerSSSS are for the election protection effort itself. that’s why I asked (did I do that here or in my email to Jane?) if there is a “lawyers for Lamont” list.
The campaign needs to select and hire THE election lawyer BEFORE election day for 2 reasons;
1)I can do election protection training in any state in the union, but only to a point because you will always need state specific info for some items.
2) you need to start working on you boilerplate legal forms now and get them copied and out to the lawyers in their training packets and feild manuals.
3) Someone has to have the “hard” talk with the targeting guys about which elections districts are likely to be hot spots and coordinate a strategy.
4) it is usally the election lawyer that sets up the lawyer from the other campaign to do the pre-inspection of the machines (to make sure, for example that the paper tape is in right, and to check the public counter number etc)and that usually has to be done no later than 3-4 days (see I don’t know the Conn local rule) days out.
5)Somoen needs to be drafting the motion papers for the impound order in case the machines need to be impounded.
MUCH legal work to do PRONTO

The most hilarious thing about this:
Look at the list of names — there are only three; they’re counting Joe as one of the “four U.S. senators” joining the tour!
How pitiful is that?
*ilson’s spot on about the volume of lawyers in CT . . .
*ilson46201 @ 105
OTOH, since this isn’t one of those big sprawling November election days with every candidate and cause completing for the best lawyers, they all might be available at once for this election.
And while we’re talking lawyers, anyone want to guess how many of Joe’s
volunteershired help have a JD?Hilda @ 108
LHP – yeah. me too. missed all the downside.
Best Wishes (hoping the curve continues the ‘uptrend.’
Thanks for all you do/are.
Mack @ 106
Really? They’re calling it Lieberwomen?
Yikes.
This is likely Pat Russo of LieberWomen, not this one .
I’m off soon to go to NY to see Ned film Colbert.
I’m quite excited as you might imagine, and will be calling in to Christy.
Jane Hamsher @ 118
OMG!!! I’m so friggin’ jealous! How friggin’ cool is that?!
Scott Rosenberg at Salon.com War Room:
This is likely Pat Russo of LieberWomen, not this one.
I dunno, *ilson, if Dodd’s PR is on her way to Japan, and Mack’s PR is a Bush Ranger (or whatever kind of Bushite) . . .
Hey, here in the summer doldrums, where we can feel ourselves sweat and are looking for relief from the heat in the Middle East — how about a contest? CHS, Jane, any prizes?
When will Bush leave for Crawford?
How many days will he be there?
Tomorrow’s August, after all.
lhp @ 111
. . . and someone’s got to run the law firm and keep everyone else headed in the same direction together, even if it’s just a temp gig.
I know you knew this. Given some of the comments around here on voting machines – old and new – I wanted to help others see more of the picture a bit more clearly.
Siun
just sent you an e-mail too
… and their HQ has LieberPhones being worked by LieberStaff using LieberPCs … oh, we could go on for days and days! — the LieberFlacks peddle LieberShit.
… and the entire LieberCampaign is swirling down the LieberToilet with a giant NedFlush on August 8th !
about election lawyer pool on hand:
There’s also a Dem primary for Governor nomination. Candidates are big-city mayors. So, I’d bet the pool’s already shrunk abit.
imho. fyi.
*ilson46201 @ 125
Ok, that’s SCREAMING for a pic.
Zergle @ 119
Redshift 113, that reminds me of HoJo in the 2004 presidential primaries touting a 5th place finish as “tied for third.” BWAHAHA.

Ned’s fairly-recent membership in an exclusionary country club is also a legitimate issue.
It’s only a legitimate issue if it was actually exclusionary (as in, had a racist membership policy), and the flyer doesn’t even claim that, according to the report, it talks about how “most of the members of the club were white.”
It’s an attempt to take something that’s probably a non-issue (country clubs are for rich people, ergo, their membership is nearly always “mostly white”) and fool people into thinking he was a member of a club that excluded black people. That’s what puts it in Lee Atwater territory. If they’d used it for another attack on “rich Ned Lamont,” that would have been a legitimate issue, this is just a dirty trick.
Blank Kludge @23: worrisome more is that enough R voters will reregister at the last minute for the ‘bipartisan’ senator. esp. w/ground game canvassing. I’ll bet they’ve already dialed up (or at least bought the R voting lists) encouraging such a thing.
I read here a couple of weeks ago that if Repubs want to cross party lines, they can’t do it at the last minute, but have to register at least three months in advance.
Lamont’s going to be on the Al Franken Show today, yet Lieberman seems to have bailed. Franken said Leiberman agreed to be on but his staff refuses to return Franken Show calls. I wonder if this will be like the Memorial Day thing and Lieberman will just call up unannounced and expect to be treated like royalty.
Blank Kludge @ 126
there are some national guys. DNC sends them all over for close races, but they are free( sorta) to sign on to a race if they ae not already committed. I have a decent rolodex for this if it is needed.
Let’s see, Bush has a long vacation in 2001 and we get 9/11.
He has a long vacation in 2005 and we get the inept federal response to Hurricane Katrina.
I am hoping against hope, but this mashing, dry-drunk of a class-clown with bombs and money will get his disaster hat-trick one way or another.

Israeli Strikes Resume After Brief Halt in Lebanon
while
Leaders in Iraq Strongly Rebuke Israel
and
Bush’s Focus in Florida Is on Domestic Agenda
Al Hunt certainly thinks it all about Iraq. Go to his column in the Int’l Herald Tribune for insights such as:
“Joe Lieberman is a thoroughly decent, intelligent, compassionate public figure with a solid three-term record of supporting mostly liberal positions on the environment, civil rights and social issues such as abortion and gay marriage.
“This person isn’t recognizable reading critics such as the leftist blogs, where “liar” is one of the nicer epithets. “How can any true Democrat vote for this guy?” asks one blog of the three-term senator.”
“The war in Iraq is a deeply divisive issue, which makes it the most legitimate reason to mount a political challenge in a democracy. Yet Lieberman’s defenders portray the Lamont insurgency as a “jihad,” and one commentator suggested the “future of civility in American politics” is at stake.”
or this gem:
“The 64-year-old incumbent’s considerable charm, genuine humor and independent integrity are assets in his home state as well as among political colleagues.”
or
“Other than family and a few friends, however, no one in Connecticut will vote for or against Ned Lamont. The question is whether you’re for or against Lieberman.”
http://www.iht.com/articles/20…..s/hunt.php
I wonder if Al gets out much, say, to Connecticut, where he could talk to some actual Lamont supporters about their jihad.
Jane Hamsher @ 118
OK, now I’m jealous. Have a great time.
Redshift — point taken about ‘exclusionary’ – that was my word based on my impression from the report of the flyer. I doubt if any country club has and enforces “whites-only” clauses. Income stratification works well for keeping the membership awfully white. So that flyer works in getting folk to read into it harshly negative stuff about the candidate.
I usually work in Black political campaigns and have seen many subtle and not-so-subtle appeals to white supremacy in opponents campaigns …
New thread, gang…
Shoephone — if almost anybody else made that pun about ‘beyond the pale’, I would probably consider moderating it …
Susan in Iowa @ 135
Umm, not so much on gay marriage. While HoJo did in fact vote against the constitutional ban on it, he was opposed to it being legal as well. I know it’s hard to believe, that he would try to play yet another issue both ways.
–That last from CBS News
Wow, I snag my usual 4 hours of sleep and come back to cool new tools, thanks Jamie! (Someone asked if this is a WordPress plugin, is it?)
Waiting to hear about the lawyers for Lamont, love the brain power around here. Hope he has a full fleet of them. (You rock looseheadprop)
Great job on Lamont’s first video blog, congrats!
from previous post Al Hunt:
If *ilson were here, he’d edit that to something like, “Joe Lieberman is the kindest, gentlest…” etc.
—
aside: spellcheck indicates 0 typos.
One suggestion is to encourage Lamont not to say ‘the war in Iraq,’ but to say instead: The American occupation of Iraq.
He wants to present a clear difference to Lieberman’s position–but he should also try to prersent a different frame.
There has been an effort for some time in the Progressive netroots to get the phrase ‘occupation of Iraq’ to be used instead of ‘war in Iraq.’ Lamont has a real opportunity to give voice to this important position.
Joe’s “Short Ride” Tour 2006
I love the idea that Ned is doing a video blog. However I do not like this first entry*. It is overly edited. It sounds like a stump speech or that he is practicing for a commercial. I would have vastly preferred something less edited and more conversational, something rough, something which feels to me like I am in the room with him and there is no camera.
Heres’ a thought: Have him discuss a point, off the cuff, and don’t edit what he says. if it takes five minutes instead of 8 seconds (sound bite size) then so be it. I would watch it. I imagine other people would too.
(*- no, I am not a concern-troll or any other type of troll. I am a semi-frequent commenter to this blog, I have contributed $65 to Lamont’s campaign, I wouldn’t pee on Lieberman if he were on fire, etc. etc., so please do not attack me for airing what could be construed as a negative against Lamont. It isn’t—it’s a suggestion for improvement).

Flashback: Lieberman Was an Early Supporter of Iraq War
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sv1v0T-gSX4
10/2/02: Joe Lieberman was very eager to authorize Bush “to take military action to protect the region and the world from Iraq under Saddam Hussein.” He was one of the senators who shared the stage with Bush before the House & Senate approved the war 9 days later.
Lieberman says, “There is no more fateful, important, or difficult responsibility that the Constitution gives members of Congress than to decide when, whether, and how to authorize the President as Commander-in-Chief to go to war. Mr. President, in your eloquent, powerful, and convincing statement this morning, you have reminded us, and I believe the American people, about why this is such a circumstance.”
Lieberman concludes by saying that the resolution authorizing the war in Iraq is “the best hope for a stronger America and for a life for the American people that is safer.”
Video from whitehouse.gov uploaded by http://www.echochamberproject.com
Here’s an opinion for you.
The problem in Iraq isn’t the inept mismanagement. It’s not the torture. It’s not the cost. It’s not the dead Iraqis. It’s not even the dead American soldiers.
The problem with this Iraq war, and the reason it can’t succeed, is that it was never fucking worth it.
If this were a real battle of good versus evil, something like WWII, people would overlook all those things mentioned in the first paragraph as part of a steep price we must pay to accomplish our goals. Maybe people SHOULDN’T accept those things even under those circumstance, but human nature being what it is, that’s what would have happened. Nobody questioned a number of extreme measures that America took during WWII because it was generally recognized that the stakes were so high it was worth it.
So there’s a cost-benefit analysis involved here. We might overlook a number of things we consider un-American if the stakes were high enough. But they aren’t. The best argument the Bush administration can muster is, “Well, if we leave our big fuck-up now, things will be even more fucked-up!” It’s hard for Americans to justify to themselves the continued stream of dead and wounded Americans and the continued complicity of America in the torture of prisoners without far better reasons than this.
Talk about the war? Yes, let’s talk about war. And which war is it, that you want to talk about? Is it the direct American agression in – say, Iraq (U.S. military in Iran’s neighboring country on the west) or say, Afghanistan (U.S. military in Iran’s neighboring country on the east) or the indirect proxy war in Lebabon (Isreal (U.S.) vs Hezbollah (Iran)). Let’s talk about, Rumsfeld’s past visits to Azerbaijan to discuss setting up bases in Azerbaijan (one of Iran’s northerly neighbhors). Or, might it be the war of wills we are having with Iran over its right to enrich uranium? Can we talk about why the U.S. is squeezing Iran in this manner? Can we talk about what we want in the downfall of Iran? Is it because we are mad at Iran for throwing off the pro-U.S. govt that we installed via the 1st ever coup engineered by our lovely CIA (hardly!)? Or, is it because those who want to control the oil resources (Carlyle Group-heavily populated by Bushies and more recently, Mr. Blair) of Iran are slowly pulling the noose tighter and tighter around the neck of Iran. Let’s talk about the next move on the chess board. So, let’s talk about the real war we are waging, that would be the war against Iran in order to seize control of its resources – no matter the price.
Poor little Joe.
A Neocon with no Diebold or Katherine Harris to help save him!
Imagine that.
A Neocon without a Diebold/Harris is
