We’re delighted to announce that FDL Book Salon will feature 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Fight the Right on Sunday, August 13 and Sunday, August 20, both at 5:00 PM EST/2:00 PM PST. Author John Javna will be joining us in the duscussion thread on August 20th.
In June, 2006, the Roots Project adopted this book as our Field Manual. I can’t speak highly enough of the book and of its principle author, John Javna, with whom our Roots Project community held a wildly popular question-and-answer conference call open to all Roots Project members.
The book begins, as we in this community do, with a set of values. Then it highlights very succinctly and accessibly many cultural and political actions individuals or small groups of people anywhere in the country can take to promote progressive change in their communities.
No matter what state, county or locality you call home, no matter who your elected representatives may be, you will find easily achievable actions you can take to promote and embody your progressive values in this book. The book includes actions and ideas appropriate for anyone, from the newly politically engaged to the experienced organizer and activist. It’s that good.
Let me take a moment here to thank John and his allies for putting this terrific book together, and for making himself so available to this community. Let me further repeat my frequent encouragement to all here that you obtain a copy of 50 Simple Things You Can Do To Fight the Right as soon as you can. You won’t regret it, and you can join us for a helluva discussion as we work together, block by block in every state, to take back our country.
Meanwhile, is anyone doing any local Drinking Liberally events they want to talk about? Anyone reading Billmon lately? I really think you should. . .

Excellent, Pach. Hope I can catch up quickly on my reading, I’m so far behind now.
OT — Libby wants to call a memory expert
Hope he remembers he’s been sworn to tell the truth in front of the grand jury…the defense team could save the money and simply smack him with a cluestick.
Us Ashlanders will have a neighbor as the guest author of the FDL Book Salon. Right on, John. Don’t forget to brush up on your Uncle John’s Bathroom Readers :)
“51. Help Ned Lamont Defeat Joe Lieberman.”
Merely out of curiosity what is supposed to happen when you hit the “edit this comment” button. All I get is the empty comment box.
The second-last paragraph is a hoot.
“The division of America … in the face of its enemies.”
http://frontpagemag.com/Articl…..p?ID=23602
Warning, its written by a freakin’ loon.
Breaking news from CNN: Israel plans to call up thousands more reservists after Cabinet approved expanding ground war in Lebanon, Reuters reports quoting Israel Radio.
Thanks for the billmon link
I’m still waiting for Rush Limbaugh to go over and fight himself. Disgraceful
wait a few seconds after you hit the “edit this comment” button — your comment will appear and you can correct all your incorrect spellings, incoherent formulations, etc … i.e.: cover your fuckups
Be nice to see Fritz fitzed.
Crooked.
Israel already called up three divisions from the reserves — this is a 2nd batch of three divisions of the reserves
I don’t know about all of you, but I am just exhausted from all the BAD news — maybe I just need to up the Prozac *g*. The news from ME tonight — Israel calling up 15-20K more reservists, blowing off the cease-fire, Syrian military on high-alert and Egypt distancing — all while I assume Condi and W are having a romantic de-briefing this evening at the WH.
Iraq is bad but I don’t see a way out of this one. It’s one of those pit of the stomach things.
Following up on previous thread — how in God’s name could Lieberman come out in favor of Net Neutrality when his dream, along with all the neocons would be to shut us down?
How soon can we get a report from Jane on the Colbert taping?
I’m listening to my XM 70s this evening while I work — just to escape.
And we can use your prayers (or whatever you do) for our home care patients this week — all poor Medicare or Medicaid, elderly and scared to leave windows open (break-in) or put in an air conditioner (utility bills). We are supposed to have air temp of 105 on Wed and are praying here that we don’t lose anyone to the heat. (Our patients are house bound and cannot afford the $$$$$ for a wheelchair van to go to a senior center for cool air.)
OT,For my fellow Pacific Northwesterners.
The FDA just announced a warning not to eat raw oysters from the Pacific Northwest due to a bacterial outbreak. 70 people in WA. have been sickened.

Whatever happened with Frist’s blind trust not being blind and insider trading investigation?
Of the 51, would 26 of them be convicting under each of these 26 statutes?
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/001238.php
Somehow, I think Conyer miscounted. I’m sure there are more than 26.
even George Bush recognized that sending Israeli troops to Iraq would be so politically poisonous and impossible which is not to say that Israel has not been involved in supportive roles in Northern Iraq (Kurdistan).
kirby – prayers your way. We are having awful heat as well, with high humidity so fans are less effective at cooling.
Something that has occured to me from dealing with heat stessed horses – I know there are programs for donating fans and have done that. What about a program for donating coolers with bags of ice and some follow up ice deliveries so that the fans blow over the cooler? I’m trying to dig up the number of an acquaintance with Meals on Wheels locally – but I wonder what entity might be good to try to work something like this through if it is workable.
rootz !
Javna !
Pach !
Hey Condi, how does it feel to be set up by the man you love? I would be practicing piano, too.
On topic, I think, because it’s all about fighting the Right. On the previous thread, TeddySanFran posted a URL to the Clinton Foundation. I really hope a lot of you will send them some feedback about Joe Lieberman using Bill Clinton’s image on a brochure that wrongly accuses Ned Lamont of being a racist in the style of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. Send them a message and ask them to make sure Bill sees it. Demand that Bill publicly distance himself from this garbage. Here’s the link:

Hi Mary. Re Tice, I can’t stop wondering what he wants to testify about. It’s something that is patently illegal but he doesn’t feel should ever, ever be declassified. How bad does it get? I don’t think I even have the imagination.
I have this book and I consider it a good one. Written by a guy who’s been around for some time and whose comments on the book and what we progressives should be doing at YearlyKos where very good.
all of us good Christian boys and girls in here remember that neat story about how Jesus changed water into wine at the wedding in Cana — way cool! — nowadays that very same town is spelled Qana and the wedding would be bombed out by the Israelis as a “gathering of dangerous terrorists”
No matter how much he’d like to shut down the whole thing, if Short Ride votes against Net Neutrality, he’s really a most amazing masochist.
I don’t think that link is very good, let’s try it again:

OK — where is that Hamsher woman and her inside scoop on the Lamont interview taped for the Colbert Report tonight? Do I have to wait 3 hours and 45 minutes to see it myself?
Spill the beans, girl!
the Daily Show at 8am and Colbert at 8:30am EDT
“Body count in Qana bombing falls sharply”
“IDF may not be to blame for Qana deaths. Gap of 7 hours between IAF strike and building collapse may relieve IDF of responsibility.”
Headlines from Haaretz. Shorter version: spin, spin, spin.
hi meta – I wonder if it is some kind of imaging/tracking capabilities? It sounds to me as if he doesn’t think it should be declassified bc of unique technology, not so much that it can not be misused.
Other than that – we need someone better at tech or sci fi than me. Maybe they can program you through your cell phone. LOL That would explain the Bush numbers. *g*
BTW – Libby filled his “Forgot to Remember to Forget” expert testimony certifcation today.
For some reason it cracks me up that his expert’s name is Bjork. I’m not saying a yellow tie isn’t just as bad as a swan dress, but it is just a tough mental image – Dr. Bjork on the stand.
I like this part:
All that living in a reality outside the jury’s commonsense —- neocons and drug abusers seem to have a lot in common.
It’s like Limbaugh is the missing link.
grumble, grumble — damn Hezbollian building code inspectors! — shoddy Hezbollite concrete contractors — rambunctious HezzyKids rough-housing — mumble, mumble
Hate, intolerance, and discrimination is the essence of the extreme right. And the struggle against that, IS… the good-fight. This is a universal, and a constant. Always has been; always will be. It’s what I think. And it’s one of the few things I know to be true.
OT (as I am this eve)- sorry all, no disrespect meant, but I have a huge deadline and I am having trouble coming up with “pertinent” comments.
Mary et al- weather horrible here w/heat and humidity AC broken- (and of course that does make me think about the Iraqis and others in the middle east who are suffering much much more). I won’t even get started on dumb-ass dubya.
So, anyway, a really low tech and helpful thing I do is to fill a plastic squirt bottle with water, and spritz myself by the fan or even while trying to sleep in the heat. So, that’s a suggestion for you to investigate. xxoo
Pach…. finally a book I have and am reading.
Wed Aug 2 – DFA-MC – Democracy for America Maricopa County meetup will be discussing this book. We also have an action item where I am putting together a letter to hand to send to our Secratary of State Jan Brewer to follow the NEW law passed to form a advisory panel by August 13 so that we can validate our votes for the Sept 12 primary. The jist of the letter is to notify the SOS that we expect her to follow the law and we are watching.
Anyone in the Phoenix area can come DFA-MC Linkup
Mary at 4:41 pm – was Congressman Conyers referring solely to impeachable offenses?
I don’t know if this link will work
Amnesty International Guantanamo Matching Funds
If not, go to their home site, click through until you can get to Guantanamo. They have a donor who has said they will match any funds pledged through today.
Also – Ned’s matching $ are going through the primary.
Doubling the impact of your donation – that has to be something to help handle the wrongright.
Complete Conyers Report
Stephen – as best I can tell, statute violations in general. “Impeachable offenses” is somewhat in the eye of the Congressional beholder. Although the reference is to high crimes and misdemeanors, most people seem to think this means Congress has incredible discretion on how de minimis an offense might be and still qualify.
Mary, oh I see. I was thinking more along the lines of content. But a secret about method is anothing thing. It just creeps me out.
Part of my Cognitive Science work in college was to do a bunch of studies on memory. I’d say Libby is practicing selective memory at the moment. A little ridiculous at that, too.
Oklahoma kiddo at 5:11 pm – in response to your 3:45 pm comments in the prior thread, I’m wondering whether you have you seen this: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14…../newsweek/
OT –
Has anyone “seen” egregious today? It’s her birthday, and I’ve been looking for her to post so I could say happy birthday.
So egregious, if you check in — Happy Day!
OT – NPR, outing from the AP wire, says there’s been cross-border fire between the two Korea’s.
it’s 4:30am in
LeningradSt.Petersburg right now …Libby may have neoconiosis a degenerative neural disease. It is a condition marked by impaired judgment, pressured speech, paranoia delusions of grandeur, and selective lapses in memory. Patients are excited by violent images and often use violence laden speech although they seldom engage in violent behaviors. (See also chickenhawk fever.)
new thread — Ned rocked!
New thread.
meta – I’m hoping when the jury hears Bjork they don’t remember anything except a swan song.
Re: Conyers – *ilson has the link to his report(several Waas references btw).
Here’s a link I’ve given before, but it’s Conyer’s Dem Judiciary Committee letters – I think he’s found 50 ways to try to tackle the right all by himself. Interesting stuff in there.
House Judiciary Committee Dems letters
new thread: “Colbert Report”
Hugh @ 49
how downright Fristian of you, with your tele-daignosis!
is there a remedy for NeoCon-stop-ation?
Hugh: although they seldom engage in violent behaviors
You must not mean that literary-ily.
OT-bustedknuckles, raw oysters aren’t the only problem in the PNW this week.
Salem Statesman Journal
Nice, huh?
Another diary based on the Melvin Lipman’s (the President of the American Humanist Association) talk in Columbus this past weekend.
Humanists and the media
“is there a remedy for NeoCon-stop-ation?”
Are there enemas for the soul?
{ahem} please note that my very own Senator Byron Dorgan’s just released book, Take This Job and Ship It, is being advertised on this site.
And I have the opinion of the local ND legendary radio progressive, the Voice of Dakota, that it’s pure Byron and excellent.
Kudos to the Senator. One of the keepers, we’re damned lucky to have him represent us.
And if your hometown library’s budget’s tight these days, consider donating a copy to them as well as getting one for yourself.
Just call me unabashed loyalist for one of the good guys.
Hurray for John!!!! John is a hugely influential author and has a great, creative mind when it comes to effective–and easy–ways to engage in Progressive activism.
And he’s a great guy…
So that Jeffrey Feldman is not EPU’s (the last commenter) just say Hi Jeffery and glad you joined us here!
OT, but had to share.
Just spent a really interesting and fun afternoon with Hope springs a turtle!
What a neat, neat lady. She’s passionate about this stuff and has the brains and energy to back it up. Talk about somebody who “gets” it!
I’m breathless just from hearing all the amazing things she’s done in her young life, and the afternoon held stories, great food, laffs and some tears, too.
Dr. Turtle called from Germany while she was here. What good, good work he is doing.
Mr. Littledog and I enjoyed the afternoon so much and we look forward to a return visit.
Oh, and if your ears are burning . . . what can I say? :)
Wouldn’t it be more consistent to encourage purchase 50 Simple Things to Do to Fight the Right from someone other than Amazon? As I recall, ShopBlue would indicate Barnes & Noble. Personally I do my online book ordering from Powell’s.
