Every Saturday at 2PM (East Coast), Blue America features a live chat with a progressive candidate for Congress — right here on Firedoglake.
The next few weeks look really exciting: Charlie Brown (CA), Dave Mejias (NY), Victoria Wulsin (OH), Jerry McNerney (CA)– four Democrats in a row aiming to help retire 4 of the absolute worst Republican rubber stamp corporate shills in the entire country: John Doolittle, Peter King, Mean Jean Schmidt, and Dirty Dick Pombo.
But before we proceed into a future with no Pombos and no Mean Jeans and No Doolittles and no Peter Kings, I thought it would be a good idea to look at how some of the men and women we’ve helped out so far have been progressing.
Last night this great-looking photo arrived from Rick Penberthy. His campaign has printed up and mailed out just over 10,000 cards, completely paid for by Blue America community members. Since we got together with Rick on July 8th, he has been endorsed by several labor unions including the AFL-CIO. The best news for Penberthy however comes from the Pasco County, the biggest and fastest growing county in the district, where the registrar of voters confirmed that over 10,000 new voters have registered as Democrats since the 2004 election.
If you’ve had the impression that John Laesch is a hands-on kind of guy who grabs the bull by the horns and confronts issues directly, you won’t be surprised to learn that he marched into Denny Hastert’s campaign office to personally challenge him to a debate on immigration. After all, it was Hastert, and only Hastert, who single-handedly killed a House/Senate compromise on the explosive issue. Hastert is very frightened of John and hasn’t answered the challenge. The last thing Hastert wants is for residents of IL-14 to make a side by side comparison between the athletic, energetic, quick-witted, Laesch, bristling with earnestness and integrity and the slothlike, ponderously gluttonous Hastert who is a posterboy for dishonesty, corruption and badly conceptualized, failed policies.
Of course, Hastert isn’t the only Bush-enabler afraid to be seen side-by-side with his opponent.
Joe Lieberman, another rubber stamp Republican (or whatever he’s calling himself these days), just piulled out of an agreed-upon debate with Ned Lamont that had been scheduled for August 6th on the local ABC affiliate. Apparently Holy Joe thinks his shot to win is to depend on multiple robo-calls to every voter in Connecticut "from" Bill Clinton between now and the August 8th primary. Lieberman has also bailed out of his scheduled Al Franken interview on Air America.
You may have noticed that last week I let loose on John Edwards a little for his use of the DCCC in "his" candidate selection process. It was big of Edwards to kind of admit he was wrong at least about one thing — he had left out fellow North Carolinian Larry Kissell. After a flood of e-mail and phone calls he’s remedied that and he’s added Larry to his contest.
July 28th was the one year anniversary of Larry’s opponent, Robin Hayes’ doing the most perfect demonstration of rubber stamp Republicanism in the history of this Congress. 365 days earlier, a teary-eyed Hayes was beaten down by DeLay and Blunt and Boehner and provided the reactionary forces of bad trade policy with the one-vote margin they needed to pass CAFTA, depriving untold numbers of working families in his own district with opportunities for employment. According to Larry "we’ve yet to get a single straight answer from Mr. Hayes on why he changed his vote on CAFTA. It still seems that every time the Congressman talks about his vote he changes his story.
Local North Carolina bloggers have started a campaign to get people to donate $7.28 to Larry’s campaign as a protest against Hayes’ and Bush’s abysmal trade policies. (Never too late!) Alternatively, if you’re in Raleigh next Saturday (August 5th), by all means join Congressmen Brad Miller and David Price at a Kissell for Congress statewide rally/BBQ, 6PM at the Kerr Scott Building on the State Fairgrounds.
Although we haven’t had Donna Edwards on for a chat yet, we did look at her campaign and we managed to raise over $3,600 for her in her primary battle against Democratic corporate whore Al Wynn. Good news since then: Donna has been endorsed by Future PAC, the first national political action committee developed by African-American women to support progressive African-American women candidates at the federal, state, and local levels by creating a network of support and funding. Last week Congressional Quarterly did a story explaining how Donna’s primary against Wynn is very much like Ned Lamont’s battle in Connecticut against George Bush’s and Ann Coulter’s favorite Democrat, Joe Lieberman.
You may have noticed that one of the candidates we have started raising money for but who hasn’t joined us for a Saturday session yet — though we hope he will — is Admiral Joe Sestak. Christy and I did some preliminary work on him last week and today Joe demonstrates again how a fighting Dem does politics. Basically the Philadelphia Inquirer story looks at how Sestak handles the Inside-the-Beltway consultants.
Consultants pressed him, for example, to abandon his call to set a deadline to withdraw from Iraq within a year, saying that many voters wouldn’t agree. "He declined. A candidate ’should be a leader,’ shaping public opinion rather than following it, Sestak said… Sestak says he is his own chief architect. Paraphrasing what he says was John F. Kennedy’s conclusion after the Bay of Pigs fiasco, Sestak said, ‘Never trust the experts. Listen to them, and then do what you think is right.’"
And when the Democratic professional consultants, who have so blurred the meaning of the party so many people don’t even know what the difference between a Democrat and a Republican is anymore, "warned him about other damage-control problems lurking in what they considered dangerously specific position papers… Sestak wrote them himself." That’s exactly what has drawn so many grassroots Democrats and Independents to Joe’s banner.
I was going to leave it at Joe today, but I just got a thank you note from Steven Porter, the Pennsylvania progressive taking on humongous rubber stamp Republican Phil English. This is a campaign the DCCC is completely ignoring. Why? Is it because Porter is too independent minded for Rahm Emanuel? Is it because he is siding with fellow Pennsylvanian Jack Murtha on the approach to Bush’s occupation of Iraq? Is it because Steven isn’t a corporate whore and will never be a corporate whore? The latest poll in PA-03, by the largest newspaper in the district, the Erie Times News shows Porter beating English 58.4% to 41.6%. Is there something wrong with the DCCC? Even the registration in the district now favors Democrats, 46%- 44%. Porter is worth backing.
…I think Rahm’s leaving this one up to us though.

Can we get an on the ground effort by the netroots to punch peter king to the mat? Boy would that be great… and he is just across the sound from CT. And he is such a bloviator….
Thanks so much, Howie, for the update — always well worth the read! And a huge thank you to Rick Penberthy for sending us the picture of all those postcards, ready to be direct mailed to constituents. It’s always great to look at something like that and know that you were able to help a little bit.
I love the Blue America posts. :)
Hi howie!
Howie what would we do without you…THANKS so much!
Christy Hardin Smith @

FDL/ActBlue version of the “ownership society” – see that small pile of cards on the lower right? My modest contribution paid for that! How’s that for return on investment…
Excellent update Howie, thanks for the good news!
How much are individuals allowed to contribute?
ccmask @ 7
$2000 per campaign per individual donor.
Thanks Fini
OT, but had to share, and I’m two threads behind.
Just spent a really interesting and fun afternoon with Hope springs a turtle!
What a neat, neat lady. She’s passionate about this stuff and has the brains and energy to back it up. Talk about somebody who “gets” it!
I’m breathless just from hearing all the amazing things she’s done in her young life, and the afternoon held stories, great food, laffs and some tears, too.
Dr. Turtle called from Germany while she was here. What good, good work he is doing.
Mr. Littledog and I enjoyed the afternoon so much and we look forward to a return visit.
Oh, and if your ears are burning . . . what can I say? :)
Can I just say how grateful I am for your words on how to find our way out of all this misery that is before us?
Fidel Castro has just officially relinquished power!
Fidel has apparently just relinquished power to his brother. He’s been experiencing serious health problems. This is so bizarre right now.
Kinda sorta on topic
Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry marking cancelled checks of small contributors to his campaign with the abreviation ASS 06
Arrogant bastard
the brother Raul will be no significant change — he has long been a leader in his own right …
meta @ 12
Linky please! (gets jumpy in his seat)
what’s Raul eating?
1. as usual, a very informative article Mr. Klein. Thank you.
2. *** do I understand that there was an agreed 2nd debate between Lamont and Lieberman….and Lieberman cancelled??? Folks, this is a HUGE opening in the Lieberman lines. I didn’t expect this. Many folks, far more creative than I, can fashion the replies/rejoinders to this announcement. Mr. Lamont needs to attack this opening full bore. I don’t care what Lieberman’s excuse is….this is running away scared from a fight. Mr. Lamont: Attack!
Ghostman
linky for meta
Your excellency, alas, no linky. Just breaking news on my TeeeVeeeeee. West Coast. And punaise is right. Raul should get a food tester. And a flak jacket. And a humvee.
meta @ 12
Just temporarily per CNN due to surgery
Thanks Immanentize, this is wild. Looks like we are indeed Living In Interesting Times. Gotta run for a bit, bbl.
nothing yet about the Castro Brothers switch in Granma
THANKS HOWIE!
OT, thanks “and your little dog too, glad Dr. Turtle is doing well.
Ghostman,
In some ways it is even better (or worse) than just a cancellation. A joint appearance on Meet the Press will happen, but the local Connecticut affiliate got dissed.
Poor move on Lieberman’s part when one of the strongest complaints about him is that he is out of touch with local voters.
imm, you da best. The TV report made it sound like Fidel is suffering from lost marbles. Some confusion and disorientation.
Hi everybody! Almost every Saturday is covered between now and November. I’m starting to tell candidates that they have to share the day with someone else from their state!
Friends, if you have never had the pleasure, I really REALLY recommend History Will Absolve Me.
It is one of the most important political speeches of the twentieth century.
Howie, I am so looking forward to these events. Great to know that so many candidates get it!
Howie Klein @
26
Howie – you’ve created a monster! (a good monster)
Howie, your work is fabulous — your organizational skills were just waiting for the blogosphere. Too cool!
1. on Raul vs. Fidel: haven’t heard any TV news on this, but as wilson noted, ultimately, no real policy change. Raul follows Fidel in all ways.
2. *** imm, 24: they’re appearing on MTP??? Hmmm. I’m not so eager on that one. It’s 2 against 1. Russert and Lieberman vs. Lamont. I don’t trust Russert at all. This news causes pause in me….again, I just don’t trust Russert.
Ghostman
Howie:
Thanks again for doing this, it’s a great service, and learning tool.
Howie Klein @ 26
Excellent news! Lookin’ forward to all of them, but especially my man Charlie Brown!
ayldt, so glad you got together with Hope! Fellow FDLers make great company, I’ve found.
Okay, that was three exclamation points for four sentences. I’m just a little excited, can you tell? ;)
Howie, you are so awesome.
Screw. Rahm.
Say what anyone will about Castro, but before him under Fulgencio Batista, Cuba was a haven for mobsters, corruption and rich American playboys and playgirls. Cubans got education, healthcare and so on under this guy Castro. Most of Cuba’s problems stem from America’s attitude of colonialism. And as for the communist argument against dealing with Cuba? Well… if communist China ever decides to sell it’s ownership of American debt there will be hell to pay in this country.
The best is yet to come. The Squirrel Nut Zippers, one of whom is a FDL community member, and Rickie Lee Jones have written and recorded a campaign theme song for our candidates
Ghostman at 31.
I wonder what “gotcha” thing Russert will trot out on Lamont. There a million opportunities to “gotcha” Lieberman — will he? Or will he stick with the tired “blogers vs man of principle Iraq War single issue” chin music? My guess is that it will have no impact on the election at all.
Pachacutec @ 34
Had to say it again it was so right-on!
http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/5/15/20291
Ghostman @ 31 re: Russert
There was an article, can’t remember where off the top of my head, but during one of the debates in 2000 (I think), Russert pulled Shrub off to the side afterwards, and flipped over the lapel on his suit coat to reveal a Bush button hidden underneath
Squirrel Nut Zippers? Wowie. I love Rickie Lee Jones. Please keep us posted!
Big Squirrel Nut Zipper fan right here! AND my five-year old, Imm Jr. loves them as well and dances up a storm when I put them on. By the way, my little dude has some great dance moves .
And, RLJ still makes me weep and quiver….
Ghostman, I share your concern about pumpkinhead Russert. The good news is that two weeks ago on MTP, Russert absolutely smashed Bush’s new Chief of Staff, Josh Bolton.
Better yet, DON’T screw Rahm.
Just caught a clip on the CT Network — CT’s version of C-SPAN. Press opportunity with Secy of State (D) who said she is getting lots of complaints from Rs switching parties to vote next week — they are worried they’ll forget to switch their party affiliation back on 8/9.
Wonder which way they’ll vote? This could be the “under the radar” key to this election.
More than 7,000 unaffiliated voters switching to a party
(Hartford-AP, July 31, 2006 5:25 PM) _ With closely watched Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate and governor set for August Eighth, thousands of unaffiliated voters have registered with political parties.
Since May, six thousand-715 unaffiliated voters have become Democrats and 419 have registered as Republicans.
A Republican primary also is set for the First Congressional District between Scott MacLean and Miriam Masullo.
A recent poll gives Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont a slight lead over three-term Senator. The race has attracted national and international attention because Lamont has criticized Lieberman’s support of the war in Iraq.
Meanwhile, New Haven Mayor John DeStefano led Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy, the party-endorsed gubernatorial candidate, by 20 percentage points in the same poll. But both campaigns predict a close vote and are encouraging unaffiliated voters to register as Democrats.
Wooo Hoooo, I love seeing my money put to work!
I met Jerry McNerney (CA)in San Diego at DemocracyFest 2006. He was on Al Frankens show and he is quite a guy. He has been in the alternate energy field since the 80’s, wind & solar. WE need him in congress besides getting rid of Pombo. He has a great story of why he is running….
I always find it great when our children inspire us to be more than we think we can be. And trying to live up to it, makes the drive so much more and the victory so much sweeter. What a great candidate to support and he has skin in the game, he will make wise choices for our military.
Howie:
I love your Blue America Saturdays and the updates, too.
You’ve given a lot of us a way to help get our country back that we didn’t have before.
It’s especially nice to make a donation to, say, a rural NC district where an advertising dollar goes a whole lot farther than it would in a big city.
One complaint. All these wonderful candidates send me a snail mail thank you letter for donating. I hate, hate, hate for them to spend one dime on me when there’s a voter out there they could talk to. Can you install a button that says whether or not you want a thank-you note?
Thanks again for all you are doing. I honestly hang on every word about these brave
underdogscandidates.imm, 37:
1. Russert will probably mention voting with the R team in Greenwich, owns Haliburton stock, and stuff on how he’s a single-issue candidate (Iraq), and stuff on how he’s backed by what Russert calls the ultra-ultra far left wing, the anti-war wing,…stuff that takes too long to explain and refute. Russert will load up on insinuation contained within the phrasing of his questions. And, Russert will rattle off all of Lieberman’s endorsements, and ask Lamont to comment.
2. I still don’t like this news. It’s like moving into a battle where you’re outnumbered two-to-one, AND you have to play by their rules. Not good.
3. *** I really hope your view that no-one will pay attention is correct.

BTW, finally went to Rahm’s site for a looksee at a pitcha. He thinks he’s handsome. The Smirk is world-class smarm. Yuck. Also Ick!
Thank you so much for this post, Howie. Firedoglake is essential to my sanity these days. It’s all good, but the area that helps me fight my political depression is the Blue America stuff. I think it’s because through the Act Blue page I can do something beyond cry in my beer.
Anyway, re this particular post
It’s a beautiful thing to support great new (and slightly used) progressive candidates and win. But here’s a question for you: Isn’t it also important — maybe just as important — to break the stranglehold these consultants for the dark side have on the Democratic Party?
I blogged about it here and Matt Stoller blogged about it better here.
I just don’t want to donate money anymore to a candidate who hires consultants endorsed by the DCCC and DSCC. Am I being too sensitive?
Howie – Anyone from AZ in the lineup?
. . . and your little dog, (#48), very perseptive of you to notice that almost all of our candidates are in cheap media markets. I’m hoping we can get 30 second spots up with a piece of the song in October
Me too about the snail mail thanks from ActBlue donations. NOT NECESSARY!! Save the postage for a district voter.
Hey Howie, I’m sorry I missed you this Saturday, I’ve been on the road. You’re doing great things!11!!
Me too about the snail mail thanks from ActBlue donations recipients. NOT NECESSARY!! Save the postage for a district voter.
Ghostman @ 49
I hear ya and the Incumbancy Protection Rackett applies to Meet The Press moderators too, IMO. On the other hand, Russert was totally facinated (enamored?) when he has Kos on his various two shows (twice so far).
and your little dog too
You are so nice. I suspect they have to send you that email as a security precaution, and they have other reasons for sending it too. Wrt security, they want to make sure that the person who sent the money matches with the email address you sent them. If a benefactor comes back later and wants their money back, that “thank you email” they sent is part of their due diligence. They tried to let you know that you donated.
LindaR- yes, we must break the strangehold of the Inside-the-Beltway power elite. I’m hopin’ and prayin’ Howard Dean is going to get that moving
Holy shit, wait til you hear the Squirril Nut Zippers with Rickie Lee JOnes on this cut.
I swear it’s a veritable hit. I’ve been sitting on this sceret a while and I can’t wait for Howie to make it public.
OK, this is way OT,
It is an article about a hack Doctor who does executions in Missouri and it really really upsets me
Howie
Thanks for the great Neil Young classic American Stars and Bars. It was a favorite of mine after it came out about 29 years ago. Didn’t know it was out on CD, and remastered.
Looking forward to your next Blue America…
BBC
I understand what you’re saying about the candidates not putting money into thank you’s but I’ve also heard from people who were offended when they didn’t get a thank you and the other day some guy who donated told me that he got a thank you and that made him donate again.
Very cool about the postcards. And a great series.
Back out of lurking status!Been keeping in touch with Fini Finito’s podcasts and lurking here.Buisy summer, folks!
LindaR,I don’t think your being too sensitive at all,but its gonna take time to reign in the DSCC and DCCC.I tend to think helping push Lamont over the top will help,as will supporting Feingold’s progressive patriots.JMO

29 years ago? Sheeeeiit I am getting OLD.
Katymine (#55)- I’ll wait ’til after the primary but I’m thinking of doing an Arizona day, a Michigan day, and a Colorado day. They all have multiple important races with late season primaries. Anyone have any faves in these states?
John Casper 61
The trouble is, they are sending snail mail thank you’s.
Postage, stationery, labor – - all that costs money.
Wow! been some cool changes here!Love it!
Doesn’t matter what Russert has done recently, he takes his orders from others. And they want JoeJoe to win. So Timmy and Joe will coordinate against Lamont.
Please, someone, prepare Ned for this and advise how to refrain from complex answers and to have comebacks because if he starts to explain in full length answers they will drown him out.
Just another worry I guess.
Pach, I’m ready to make it public to our community; just waiting for Jane and John from C&Ls to get back to me with their approval of the press release
something amusing: the LieberFlacks set up a phony blog allegedly unaffiliated with the Joe campaign but half the posts are by Joes paid flack — they use http://www.lieberdem.blogspot.com
Stupid fucks! Guess who just bought http://www.LieberDem.com ?
We don’t need Howard Dean to break the stranglehold of the Beltway Bandits, Howie — we’ve got you and you’ve got us!
Keep up the good work — my Saturdays are so much fun spent chatting with real Democratic heroes turning America Blue. Thanks so much for all you do.
My prediction: Timmeh will bend over backwards to be nice to Lamont, not allow RGJoe to interrupt (maybe even use Ned’s line “this isn’t Fox News, Senator”). RGJoe will come off all snarly and mean. Recall that, to Timmeh, Ned represents wealth as much as RGJoe represents power.
Ned, of course, is exactly what we need to end The Incumbency Festival!
DMM @ 69
I’ve got a fan? How did that happen? [blushes]
The podcast is being retooled and will roll out again soon in a new and much improved style. I got teammates these days, it’s gonna be way more awesome when we return. Howie is still Music Director too…I cant wait to play some of the tunes he has sent for me to use.

thanks for the confirmation. she got a few other good digs in on that album. saw her put on a good concert at the Marin Civic Center.

2. Boy oh boy, I ALSO sure hope teddy sf is correct. We’ll see.

Pach at 63 is right — Howie sent me a rough cut for my listening pleasure, and the peanut makes me fire it up at least once a day to dance to it. *g* Howie’s gonna have another hit on his hands, above and beyond campaign time. :) And, as always, Rickie Lee and the Squirrel Nut Zippers completely rock. Howie, thanks for vetting these candidates for us. I’m in total agreement that I don’t NEED a thank you note. They can send me an e-mail after the election or something…or not. The money was donated with no strings attached.

I’ve got some other ideas up my sleeve for the campaign… so as always if you’d like to pitch in 5 bucks over at theBlueAmerica page, it’d be of great help.

p.s. round your donation to .83 if you’re not into the paper thank yous…now, onto the Colbert-Lamont replay…
Howie, I’ve enjoyed your Sat sessions. If even two-thirds of these candidates are elected, the average IQ in the US House of Reps promises to rise substantially.
Whereas the existing Congress tolerated the bullying tactics of DeLay, none of the candidates you’ve introduced seem like people who would tolerate ‘being hammered.’ That’s very heartening.
I can see why the R’s are in a wild panic — for the first time in my memory, the Right Wing is facing opponents who are tougher, smarter, and clearly more ethical. I don’t see that the R’s have any alternative but to smear, lie, and fling filth; they can’t run on their record.
Birnam Wood may come to Dunsinaine, after all.
I think it’s likely to arrive on the cheap, via PayPal. One candidate at a time; one small ActBlue contribution at a time. But every small PayPal click puts me in mind of the clanging axes hewing trees in Birnam Wood.
Looking forward to hearing from Charles Brown.
To find out more about how corrupt Doolittle is and what he has been up to check out at Dump Doolittle
We keep track of Doolittle’s doings and corruptions.
Doolittle is one congressman who is involved in each major scandal being investigated. (Abramoff and Wilkes) His wife is the only congressional wife who is doing “fund-raising” for her husband and is the only one who takes a 15% commission. Doolittle is smug and has a very Rovian approach to campaigning.
Doolittle thinks no one cares about ethics and he was DeLay’s and Abramoff’s champion.
Sestak’s definitely doing the right thing in the right place at the right time. The PA-7 used to be a Republican stronghold, but things are changing. There’s a lot of anger about how things have been going in this country in the last 6 years in the PA-7 and a lot of people who used to be diehard Republicans are ready for a change. Between Joe and candidates like Bryan Lentz (an Iraq war veteran running for the state house), Democrats are going to win big in the PA-7 this november.
There is another race in Pennsylvania worthy of note, the 16th district Congressional race pitting Lois K. Herr against another rubberstamp for the Bush Administration (about 90% of the time), Joe Pitts. Pitts is running for his 6th term, despite a campaign promise at the beginning of this Congressional career to limit himself to 5 terms. He is the GOP designate to push their “moral values” agenda because they think he is safe in his seat. He is also point man, per the NYT, for the “war against contraception”. He has stubbornly supported the Iraq invasion and occupation, despite the revelation of facts that would have made a thinking person reflect.
In 2004, Lois Herr ran against Pitts, entering the race late and will little money (and no DCCC support), and took 34% of the vote. This year, she has more money and better name recognition (although still no public support from the DCCC), and expects to do much better…in fact, she expects to win. If she does, she’ll be the first woman EVER to represent PA’s 16th district. She’d be the first Democrat since the Civil War (as best I can determine) to represent the 16th. She’s been a successful business executive, a farmer, educator, women’s rights activist, and an author. She’s smart, level-headed, mature, principled, and–thank heavens–progressive.
She’s up against it in Lancaster County, with Dems outnumbered 3 to 1, and without the DCCC active support. She takes no special interest money. But she does have the support of moderate Republicans as well the full support of the area Dems. She has been raising funds at a similar rate to Pitts, but he had more in the bank to start. The district newspapers have not been giving her comparable space to Pitts, who they apparently feel obligated to publish as a “public servant”.
Progressives across the country need to give her all they have to get her over the top. Check her out at http://www.loisherr.us.
Just because someone is running against a hardline right-winger doesn’t make them a “progressive” candidate. You’re off base about Charlie Brown. Just so you know.
