Suzy Quattro: OR Joan Jett?
Ha
I pretty much always have to go with Jett. Mmm…
Always a bridesmaid…
Ned!
Joan!
Jane!
Kobe!
Corrrections!!!
I gotta vote for Jett. I’ll throw out Heart’s “Crazy on You” as a second runner-up.
Yeah I’m a big Joan Jett fan myself. But in that Suzy Quattro video you can see how much Joan got from her (which she freely admits — Joan Jett is Suzy Quattro’s biggsst fan).
Jett. I must always endorse women associated with the aerospace industry.
At least the choices tonite don’t include that mind-scrambling Numa Numa.
Went to sleep with it playing over and over in my head, and sure ‘nuf, it was still there when I woke up. *g*
God I love woman who rock. I’ll go with Joan.
Suzy. Always had a soft spot for her.
I gotta vote for Jett. I’ll throw out Heart’s “Crazy on You” as a second runner-up.
And then there’s this…
Ohhhh, Billmon has gone all hinky on war crimes again –
http://billmon.org/archives/002589.html
And if you hurry, you can see the WB in all it’s center justified glory!

One blogger’s analysis of the poll results in the CT Senate race.
Joan.
But Suzie’s OK too, despite her role as “Leather Tuscadero”.
At least the choices tonite don’t include that mind-scrambling Numa Numa.
Went to sleep with it playing over and over in my head, and sure ‘nuf, it was still there when I woke up. *g*
This is one of my favorite earworms.
Leather Tuscadero!
Jett—
Almost makes the Hep C worth it—-
However, Bogota still is etched in my psyche–
For a sec I thought I misspelled her name - And I did. But so did Jane. :D
It’s “Suzi”.
Eli - I actually really like that tune! and, it has badgers! I finally got my new phone in the mail today, and I am trying to figure out how to make that my new ring ring sound.
[insert “need no stinking badgers” joke here]
Suzy, tho Joan did alright with a vocal range of about 5 notes.
I finally got my new phone in the mail today, and I am trying to figure out how to make that my new ring ring sound.
I have a ringtone of the original unspeeded-up version, but it’s just not the same.
Sorry Jane, can’t dig that primitive two-chord Suzy Quattro stuff. It’s all attitude and leather and not much music. Too bad the ‘roll’ has been lost from rock n’ roll.
Arrgh! I thought it was Suzi, but I thought ya’ll must be correct and just went with it! Can I ever trust you again???
Eli at 15:
“earworms”
Aaaaaggghhh!!! Don’t be bringin’ up those critters.
I don’t remember the title or author of the tale, but after reading it in school, I had nightmares as a kid about those things.
BTW, I thought they were called earwigs? *g*
Damn VictorLaszio,
I automatically typed “Suzi” and thought I was wrong and went back to correct.
Thanks for getting it right.
No one argue as I am holding “Rock Hard” LP right now.
Two women who rock, in entirely different ways:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcbpShbBtNc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqzqYsuQ-tQ
can get OT slightly since it is late night, and a little slow? I need help with a catchy blogspot name, need to move my work to a new place. I promise not to blogwhore! Blogslut, perhaps, but not blogwhore.
ccmask, left you a cool photo link in EPU-land.
ohmyblog
better yet …
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....ch=alannah myles
none of the videos quite capture the pure … essence … was that the word … of Alanna live
only other woman I’ve seen that “essential” live was Janis
I will *not* be the one to post a Lita Ford video, BTW.
sherocket at 27:
Given your handle, how about something like www.redglare.com?
As Glenn would say, “What would a Patriot do?”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=Texas Tornados
Hey baby, que paso?
Just for you younger firepups… to explain my Heart comment… Back when the video below was recorded, there weren’t many (if any) well known female guitarists. The sound quality sucks but you can see it ain’t just power chords. http://tinyurl.com/mtrw4
none of the videos quite capture the pure … essence … was that the word … of Alanna live
only other woman I’ve seen that “essential” live was Janis
Oh my. She seems… predatory.
Mad Dogs - I like it, but somebody already has it, looks like.
Eli 31 — bless you.
Hey, Jane, say Hi to Matt.
Maybe he can give you some tips on the whole crowd-estimating thing, to avoid further embarassing miscounts when covering the Leiberman campaign. Boys are good with numbers.
RGJoe: Count his supporters each day on two hands!
Mad Dogs - I like it, but somebody already has it, looks like.
Alas, I know the feeling. My very first choice was “The Evil Midnight Blogger What Blogs At Midnight” (and I planned to *only* blog at midnight), but it was taken.
Suzy or Joan?
Neither.
PATTI SMITH. HORSES.

I think this piece of performance Art from this summer in London is fantastic. What a beautiful wonderful show all paid for by tax dollars by the way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=giant girl
The name of the company is Royal De Lux. The song is Elephant Walk.
I could try to go for “der Fledermaus” then . . .
Joan Jett, no question about it.
Sorry, but the music band left this grandma at the busstop. I am still back in the 60’s folk music. I secretly listened to Elvis. And have a collection of old Elvis’ gospel music.
So I will just ride along for awhile. And here’s hoping that CT dem voters really are keeping track of what is going on. My wish for a blow to the DLC are beyond urgent — but are party saving.
Jett.
Ghostman
Eli….predatory but her victims would be grateful, eh?
also worth a view, her hit here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....ch=alannah myles
seeing her live, there was a sense of celebrating strong woman’s sexuality that made everyone smile a lot
I also like Siouxsie.
Take your pick, flapper or goth Barbarella.
Eli….predatory but her victims would be grateful, eh?
I’m always grateful.
medaka … thanks for the reminder…Patti Smith energy … overwhelming … saw her live with my ex-h and he was terrified of her…
needless to say, I was not
though at times I was terrified *for* her… such raw emotion …phew!
“stinkingbadgers” is available. a possibility.
and, “charcoalbriquettes”, a fave, is possible.
and the question of do I care if somebody who is too interested in disrupting what I do finds it/comments, etc.
and, a propos, a badge of my Mtv generation-ness,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuOhUa5GxA0
What about Tanita Tikaram?
I like this one better -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12LFc9ANdms
I got in a huge arguement with Siouxsie once. She is a sparky one. We both laughed in the end and had a beer.
and, a propos, a badge of my Mtv generation-ness,
I’ve posted this before, but I think this video totally captures the soul of the 80s.
my dial-up is voting a tie, since I am still downloading. so far, both have a good beat and i can dance to them
OK I can see you all are caught up in this 60’s rock thing but when you get a chance check this out you will be amazed…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=giant girl
This post got me wondering what ever became of Joan Armatrading, and I see she’s still going strong. I Saw her at the Roxy in Hollywood in the mid 70’s. Good show.
ahh. the eighties clothes my mom would never let me buy, even when I got taller than my sisters and pre-emptively outgrew the hand-me-downs.
Suzanne - My orange juice cans need new string too.
Jett, but I still miss Janis
Janis Joplin, Maybe
she still brings a tear to my eye…
GrandmaJ, for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....earch=pete seeger
TeddySF 38, Joe can’t afford to be taking his socks off to count his crowds, his feet are too stinky.
dammit, oc, that one’s dayam near my favorite janis every. i’m going to be sitting here all night downloading on dial-up.
sherocket,
Tanita, what a voice!
On the subject of female rockers…
I’m older now (too old, dammit) and happily married but… who could forget Marin County in 1968, Janis Joplin, Southern Comfort, Acapulco gold? Certainly not me.
And medaka at 40 — yeah Patti Smith is something else, and surprisingly sweet and shy actually but my all time fave of recent years was always Chrissy Hynde. There’s something about that habit of mixing hash with tobacco you pick up in England. Plus she’s a great singer, a real rocker and a hell of a songwriter.
Chrissie Hynde. I rest my case.
Second on Chrissy Hynde.
afterthought - hat tip to Eli, I hadn’t thought of that song in years, but it is really something
both. and janis still brings a tear to my eye as well.
Gotta go with Janis.
Leather Tuscadero!
Warm Leatherette!
But if you want to check out more women who rock, try Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O and Wata of Boris - she can slay you while standing still.
Gotta go with Joan, ’cause she loves rock and roll.
If you crossed Mad Max, Jules Verne, with a French performance artist you get a giant elephant with an equally Giant little Girl and about a Million people in Central London. No it aint rock and rool but it is amazing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=giant girl
And let us not forget k d lang.
Eli: Thanks!
How about Bryan Adams and Tina Turner- It’s Only Love?

she still brings a tear to my eye…
Me too, but for my own reasons. Everyone who knew her understood she was a tragedy waiting to happen.
I always gotta run with Joan. Yeah, that Leather Tuscadero thing was a bit jump the sharkie before the Foz actually did. :)
Now this chick rocks poignantly:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyp5we2ySDo
How about Bryan Adams and Tina Turner- It’s Only Love?
Tina rocks, but Bryan Adams is pure ick for me…
Suzanne - if you REALLY want to spend a lot of time downloading, Janis at Woodstock:
unbelievable Janis!
about 7 and a half minutes of processor over-heatin’ Janis…
Okay some Suzy love in the house tonight. I was talking with TRex today and he said his favorite Suzy song was…”(Someone Else’s) Lipstick!” Which happens to be my favorite Suzy song, and I couldn’t even find a CD that contained it.
Now that’s a rather obscure commonality.
Which happens to be my favorite Suzy song, and I couldn’t even find a CD that contained it.
Do you need a copy?
Morris Sheppard - I understand, but talent like that doesn’t always come in a whole healthy package…
I try to hold her gently - flaws and all… she was a Great Gift.
Yeah, but its a great video.
siun 49
Glad you enjoyed the Patti. When I was 17 I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be Patti Smith or David Bowie. I settled for somewhere in between …
Did you see her recently, or back in the 70s? I caught her in Osaka a few years ago, first time in many many years, and she still has it …
I have to go with Janis as my all time favorite, and in keeping with the season
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgFWibrTAKQ
Summertime.

Eli - I actually really like that tune! and, it has badgers! I finally got my new phone in the mail today, and I am trying to figure out how to make that my new ring ring sound.
I recall reading about a site that lets you upload any MP3 and turn it into a ringtone, but I don’t remember the details. You might be able to find it with Google.
Ok, while we’re on the subject of great girl songs and singers I humbly present for your approval …
Christina Amphlett of the Divinyls “I Touch Myself”
Defintely Suzy.
For newer fantastic female singers, check out this-

adding summertime and woodstock to the list.
please let there not be turtle blues or i need a man to love u-tube. i am so regretting this dialup.
How about Bryan Adams and Tina Turner- It’s Only Love?
Tina Turner proved how women improve with age and freedom. However, I’d surely go with “What’s Love” over that one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ia4stir_uk8
ever wonder why “Tattoed Loved Boys” from the first Pretenders album leaves you kind of off balance? It’s in 15/8 time or some equivalent thereof (an eight beat measure follwed by a seven beat measure), so you can’t find a simple 1-2-3-4 groove. It makes it seem hurried and frantic, as if every other measure arrives too soon.
Sly but important element of the song, pretty sophisticated for pop-new wave with an edge. Not unlike Brubeck’s “Blue Rondo a la Turk” which vacillates between 9/8 and 4/4 time (OK, that’s a stretch of a comparison, but it’s for reference).

I understand, but talent like that doesn’t always come in a whole healthy package…
Yeah. I don’t come in a whole healthy package, and I don’t even have that kind of talent.
Youtube is a regular cornucopia of Joan Jett:
Crimson And Clover
Bad Reputation
Suzy, definitely.
For newer, ahem, fantastic females, check these out-

This thread is not very conducive to opera but I feel duty bound to present some (and it’s all I know, lol). In Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra, the dad, sung by the incomparable Piero Cappuccilli, has been separated from his daughter (sung by Mirella Freni) since her birth. In this scene, they discover their relationship about half way through. “The moment” is at 5:20 when the daughter checks out the locket that proves it.
This scene is one of Verdi’s most beautiful and emotional. He had a special feeling for fathers and daughters that is profoundly affecting. Have a box of Kleenex handy.

Oh, and I vote for Jett.
Morris Sheppard - if you haven’t watched the Woodstock link, you might enjoy it… I’d bet you’d even forgive her ;-)

Geez Louise! 15/8 time sounds positively scizophrenic.
medaka - I saw her when Horses first came out … my ex and I were spending a lot of time at CBGBs and Max’s and then a lot of people came to CT to perform including Smith who did a concert at a small theatre in Westport … felt like the place was going to burn down … around the same time the Ramones actually played a tiny club in Norwalk and we were the whole audience … it was rather wonderful
but Patti Smith just vibrated everything …
ccmask @ 10:03 pm (#76) - This is much better than the studio version.n I think they both worked better in front of an audience.
Here’s another badass female vocalist.
Geez Louise! 15/8 time sounds positively schizophrenic.
more typical of King Crimson or Yes, but it works (on second thought - it’s been a while since I listened to it - it may be 7/8 time [4 plus 3] which is not quite as obscure but still leaves you hanging.)
OldCoastie
From your nick, OldCoastie, as in old enough to have been around then and on the coast, I wonder if you ever met Janis. As for Woodstock tapes, I’ve seen them all many, many times but maybe I’ll take a gander.
Eli - rockin’ the house
Morris … another good reminder, the Divinyls! merci!
and touched by your Janis comment … I only saw her once but will never forget
there’s that combustion when certain performers simply walk on stage and you know … immediately … that you are going to be knocked over just from the energy they give off … and nodding to Op, my classical example would be watching Norrington walk out to conduct the London Classical Players … you just know you are in for it … phew!
my youtubes are blocked!
and nodding to Op, my classical example would be watching Norrington walk out to conduct the London Classical Players … you just know you are in for it … phew!
His version of Beethoven’s 9th is the only one I can listen to…
Eli, poor dead Karen. What a waste. She did have a beautiful pure voice.
Anyone remember Elastica?
phew -
this is not a woman badass rocker, nor is it good to dance to, just a song I had been yearning for, and only just found on youtube today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1z4IJc9fNk
Patti Smith is an icon like no other.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1GoDhEpXuU
Because the Night, with Sara Mclaughlin, who’s very good live I’m add.
I have say I was fortunate enough to see Michael Stipe sing this with Bruce Springsteen on the Vote for Change tour.
this is not a woman badass rocker, nor is it good to dance to, just a song I had been yearning for, and only just found on youtube today.
Well, if we’re going in that direction…
Morris - nope, never met her… just a fan from the very first moment… (and I’m not easily won over)
‘night firepups - thanks for all the great music - early day tomorrow…
nellie didn’t hit my mood tonight, but I have to like any song with the line “Nellie the elephant packed her trunk”

Gotta love the nerd/punk energy.
Eli at 106
His version of Beethoven’s 9th is the only one I can listen to…
How come? BTW, I usually enjoy your youtube selections, keep ‘em coming.
Billie: Gloomy Sunday, have Prozac handy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....rch=billie holiday
whig-guy - that one is more on the mark.
how ’bout the singer from Romeo Void (”Never Say Never”) and Exene Cervenka from X
How come? BTW, I usually enjoy your youtube selections, keep ‘em coming.
Thanks! The Norrington version sounds leaner and cleaner and brighter and crisper to me. All the other versions I’ve heard sound sluggish and bloated.
Bear in mind, the pool of classical music that I like is rather small, so I’m really not an authority here.
What you didn’t like Giant Elephants and puppets?
What you didn’t like Giant Elephants and puppets?
I did! Had to send it to my girlfriend, who is already convinced I’m mad.
Well that should cinch it.
Probably not exactly badass, but another personal favorite.
I like giant girls and elephants just fine (althought they will never prove any of that stuff - settled out of court). Just gloomy, taking down everything under my old blogspot spot and ditching the old handle I wrote and performed under for about five years.
need this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYPv1TWVbLI
Not even close — Quatro. Jett’s performance is a little too Billy Idol for me. Also, Quatro has a cooler name.
I second whoever said Siouxsie. Also Jeannette Kantzalis of the Chubbies and A Brokeheart Pro.
more typical of King Crimson or Yes, but it works (on second thought - it’s been a while since I listened to it - it may be 7/8 time [4 plus 3] which is not quite as obscure but still leaves you hanging.)
OMG, I loved Yes when I was a teenager and I also had a King Crimson album. Court of the Crimson King, if I remember correctly.
However, I never found anything remotely strange about Yes’ syncopation. Yes was one of my top five groups in the 70’s.
From the last album I bought of theirs “Tale from Topographical Oceans”
The Revealing Science of God
Dawn of light lying between a silence and sold sources,
Chased amid fusions of wonder, in moments hardly seen forgotten,
Coloured in pastures of chance dancing leaves cast spells of challenge,
Amused but real in thought, we fled from the sea whole.
Dawn of thought transfered through moments of days undersearching earth
Revealing corridors of time provoking memories, disjointed but with purpose,
Craving penetrations offer links with the self instructors sharp
And tender love as we took to the air, a picture of distance.
Dawn of our power we amuse redescending as fast as misused
Expression, as only to teach love as to reveal passion chasing
Late into corners, and we danced from the ocean.
Dawn of love sent within us colours of awakening among the many
Won’t to follow, only tunes of a different age.
As the links span our endless caresses for the freedom of life everlasting.
Talk to the sunlight caller
Soft summer mover distance mine.
Called out a tune but I never saw the face
Heard but not replaced
I ventured to talk, but I never lost my place
Cast out a spell rendered for the light of day
Lost in lights array
I ventured to see, as the sound began to play
What happened to this song we once knew so well
Signed promise for moments caught within the spell
I must have waited all my life for this
Moment moment
The future poised with the splendour just begun
The light we were as one
And crowded through the curtains of liquid into sun
And for a moment when our world had filled the skies
Magic turned our eyes
To feast on the treasure set for our strange device
What happened to wonders we once knew so well
Did we forget what happened surely we can tell
We must have waited all our lives for this
Moment moment moment
Starlight, movement, reasons
Release forward
Tallest rainbow
Sun shower seasons
Life flower reasons
They move fast, they tell me,
But I just can’t believe that I can feel it
There’s someone to tell you,
Amid the challenge we look around in unison with you
Getting over overhanging trees
Let them rape the forest
Thoughts would send our fusion
Clearly to be home
Getting over wars we do not mean
Or so it seems so clearly
Sheltered with our passion
Clearly to be home
They move fast, they tell me,
But I just can’t believe they really mean to
There’s someone, to tell you,
And I just can’t believe our song will leave you
Skyline teacher
Warland seeker
Send out poison
Cast iron leader
And through the rhythm of moving slowly
Sent through the rhythm work out the story
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past.
Young christians see it from the beginning
Old people feel it, that’s what they’re saying.
Move over glory to sons of old fighters past.
I’m hot. I’m sweaty. I have to take a shower and go to bed and I’ll leave with one final thought.
Ned must win! Now that national attention has been drawn to this race it is of paramount importance and will shape the party for years to come.
The primary in Connecticut — This time it’s personal.
Ok how about this just for the shock value, Ronald Reagan and Dinah Washington. Aggghhhhhh. To little Dinah always to much Ronnie, that’s sums up this countries troubles in nutshell.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=dinah washington
Eli - yes, exactly.
Just watched the McCoughlin Group, you know for kicks and tv target practice. Blankley and Zuckerman thought Lieberman was a certain win in the primary and used dated statistics and info supporting themselves. Buchanan gave Lamont a 33 percent chance of winning in Nov. and looked like he believed the chances were better than 33 percent. Lux thought Lieberman had a golden parachute and would win both the primary and in November.
What’s up with Pat and his left footing?
SharonW
However, I never found anything remotely strange about Yes’ syncopation. Yes was one of my top five groups in the 70’s.
anything with Bill Buford drumming was bound to get veer from 4/4 eventually. Although now that you mention it, he was more about cross-rhythms layered on top of basic beats.
one of the best jazz-fusion drummers, believe it or not, (IMHO) was Phil Collins with Brand X.
sherocket - Gorillaz, indeed. I’m partial to “Kids with Guns” (the song, not the concept)
