(Please welcome Connecticut blogger Spazeboy, who will be guest posting about the Lamont/Lieberman race from a local perspective -- JH)
Maura, good friend of both Spazeboy and Firedoglake, brought this line from an article in today's NYTimes to my attention:
In general, the senator has avoided speaking about foreign policy on the campaign trail. His campaign did not make him available for an interview for this article.
I found it more than a little curious that Senator Lieberman would hold the highly regarded and much respected New York Times at arm's length. It seems to me as though he treats the local press in much the same way, either declining to comment or just changing the subject.
Well, I live in Connecticut, I'm a registered Democrat and I think that Senator Lieberman should answer questions about issues that are important to his constituents. Senator Lieberman is not merely a Democratic Connecticut for Lieberman Candidate for U.S. Senate, he is first and foremost a sitting United States Senator. I believe that he has an obligation to serve and answer his constituents in Connecticut. He is most certainly not exempt from answering questions about foreign policy, or any other important issue such as healthcare or education.
It's unclear to me whether questions about the issues simply are not being asked, whether they are being ignored by the Senator, or whether questions about actual issues (maybe the war that's going on?) are being blocked by Marion Steinfels. In today's Hartford Courant, Mark Pazniokas writes about both candidates' focus on turning out voters for the August 8 primary, then takes a sharp right turn:
Meanwhile, the Lieberman campaign declined to comment on whether Lamont's use of $3 million in personal funds has made Lieberman eligible for extra donations - up to an additional $4,200 - from each of the campaign donors who already have given him the maximum $2,100 allowed by law for the primary.
Excuse me please, but where the hell did that come from?
Mr. Pazniokas and all other political reporters, please take this constructive criticism in the good spirit in which it is given: When it's necessary to write that the Lieberman campaign declines to comment on something, please write about how Senator Lieberman refuses to answer questions about Iraq--or even mention the issue that is most important to Democrats on his website and other campaign materials. I think that your readers and the voters of Connecticut are far more interested in Senator Lieberman's refusal to speak about the issues of the day than in his refusal to comment on fundraising law.
Joe Lieberman is not only snubbing bloggers who attend (or try to attend) his publicly announced and public events, but he's snubbing the local press--bigtime. It's up to the reporters in Connecticut whether they want to play Lieberman's game. It's up to reporters in Connecticut whether Marion Steinfels is the be-all, end-all gatekeeper to Senator Lieberman who gets to screen all of the questions that he'll be asked to answer.
Read the article in today's Courant, and you'll notice what I noticed--no quote from Senator Lieberman is included. Clearly, playing games with Marion Steinfels isn't getting anyone access to the Senator.

tres beau Beau !
When your political instincts are as sharp as a fuzzy kitten, at some point you come to realize you’d better shut the hell up and let other people do the talking for you. I guess the WATB finally hit that point.
spazeboy is my hero! even more than fitz, even more russ - spazeboy is helping change the face of american politics!
Spazeboy in da house!
In a campaign of misstep after misstep, silence is not a bad strategy. Maybe they should just hustle Joe — and his staff — out of the country until August 9. Let Clinton et al do the campaigning while Joe drinks mai tais and chastises the pool boy for loose morals.
Certainly couldn’t hurt.
selise @ 7
I’m just in the right place at the right time doing the right thing.
Hey CT Bob!! I couldn’t get through to your blog for a long time last night, so now finally - I’m shreiking with laughter! You are da man. Great work. I just can’t tell you guys how much I admire you.
This marks the first occasion where I’ve seen a comment #0. Looks like it’s officially a phenomenon ;)
When I first loaded this article, there were no comments. I read the article, and then hit the “Refresh Comments” button. Lo and behold, there was this:

So, my guess is that there’s a bug in the Javascript that does the comment refresh function.
FDL has assembled the most remarkable guest posters a-blog: from Pachacutec to (yay!) spazeboy, this place is da shizzle.
But what is this “millionaire’s exemption” the Incumbency Festival voted itself? I love that the Incumbent challenged by the millionaire gets to self-determine the threshold and thus his campaign’s eligibility to go back to the Corporate Well. So, Hadassah’s big Pharma employers and all the other Incumbency Condoms can kick in another eight million for RGJoe?
Oh, that is rich!
Yes, I have had the fuck enough!
Lieberman is a liablity to the Lieberman campaign.
Cujo — you know the saying : its not a bug, its a feature! that unexpected 0 comment produces a frisson to let you know that the universe can get a tiny rip in it now and then. That can be exciting!

too many of us haven’t done the right thing…. you and your CT compatriots are an inspiration!
Oh, c’mon, Spazeboy…Between lifeguard lessons and walrus hummers, who’s got time for an informative chinwag with the ink-stained wretches?
;>)
why is Joe Lieberman still talking about what that pool boy and I did in the car outside of that pizzaria?
Thanks, spazeboy, for this post, and for your energy and enthusiam in battling the forces of inertial suckitude. I’m glad you’re giving CT Bobs excellent Colbertian “The Word” some wider play.

that is just *wrong*
(I *have* been trying to lose weight though… maybe the second graphic will help)
This is for my co-religionist TeddySanFran, and TeddySanFran ONLY. No one else can look, you would likely be offended.
*ilson, thanks for the Billmon link in the previous thread. He’s been absolutely en fuego of late, but that column really hit home. Between bouts of outrage, I share his sense of profound sadness.
Years ago, I read a book about the Normandie, the 1930s ocean liner that defined French aspirations and showcased their sense of design and technological achievements. One of the chapters that stuck out for me was the description of her last voyage from LeHavre to New York just as war was breaking out in Europe. I’m beginning to understand how her passengers and crew must’ve felt, as if they all were sailing into a void.
Too much snubbing and subbing and scrubbing going on. Period.
op99
I peeked and was not offended. Feel free to read into that. :)
Lieberman does have an obligation to tell the people of Connecticut and the whole country his position on the issues. Truthfully. All incumbents and offce seekers have that duty. But obviously the Senator doesn’t see it that way. Anyway, he probably wouldn’t say anything new. He’s a broken record. Lieberman and Bush are stubborn to the point of being stupid. Worse, they are dangerous. And they’re not going to change course or admit a mistake. No matter what. For guys like Lieberman, Bush and Nixon the press is the enemy. Unless they tow the line. Their line.
spazeboy, the guy’s style is like TRex on crack.
one would have thought that the LieberCampaign could have gotten the Big Dog to sit down and read a sensibly scripted robocall. Using poorly editted snippets from a public speech sounds hinky.
*ilson 29, they probly asked and Bubba said, “no dice.”
al-Scooter –
The Normandy was burned at the New York docks, while it was being refitted as a troop transport. The Mafia burned it, to show the government who was the boss.
Now, the BushCo gangsters control the government, and are burning the world to show everyone who’s the boss.
OK Kiddo
You’re right. I hope the press realizes that Joe is playing them like a fiddle. If he gives out his same flawed positions as answers, or refuses to answer at all…I think that is what the press should report.
I’m pleased that Jennifer Medina pointed out the Senator’s refusal to answer questions about foreign policy in her article.
Senator Lieberman is disrespecting both the press and his constituents. He’s a hypocrite to boot, insisting that he’ll campaign on his record when he won’t take questions about that either. (Take, for instance, his “short ride” comment–I don’t think he’d answer a question about that…and to be fair I don’t think anyone has asked him, and they should).
*ilson46201 @ 1:44 pm (#15) - From my perspective, there’s enough of that form of excitement to be had already.
BTW, for you folks who use Firefox on Windows, there’s a new trojan horse e-mail out there that installs itself into Firefox as a real extension called numberedlinks. It then proceeds to send confidential information like credit card numbers from your computer to some server somewhere.
http://www.heise-security.co.uk/news/76019
Due to the way this e-mail installs itself, it’s only a problem for Windows users. If you suddenly have a Firefox extension you didn’t install, I’d recommend you check this out.
Great post spazeboy. I’m honored to have an orignal business card of yours. What a great time and palce for you to be in, in reference to your 1;39 PM POST.
*ilson46201 @ 29:
Using poorly editted snippets from a public speech sounds hinky.
The only way this robocall could have gotten any worse is if it had been a Clinton speech where everytime he said Lieberman it was obviously another man’s voice chopped in. That would have been funny. This call is just pathetic.
Cujo @ 2:05 (it’s bizarre for me to be using PST since it’s nearly dinnertime here)
Thanks for the firefox tip. I was reminded to reboot my browser to finish installing an update from earlier.
Tweety compares Ann Colter’s writing to “a young George Will” and I just threw up a little in my mouth.
somebody on the Imus show this morning called that Matthews program today “Skankball”
Good point, as someone who spends a fair amount of time tweaking sound and editing audio, I have to say that this robocall is amateurish editing, at best. With all the money he has on hand, you’d think he could hire someone who knows what they’re doing.
… Separation and Divorce, the remaining heterosexual privileges, are also coming under attack by the Goodridge lesbians. See, first teh gays assault the sacrament of marriage, then we want another slice of the privilege pie.
Until yours is GONE.
I’m sorry for the family and especially their daughter, but Separation? Isn’t there a U-Haul outlet nearby that could handle this break-up quietly for the affected parties? Must their attorney issue a statement?
PS
oh. op99, i am such an idjot, i don’t get it. luv ya.
Per spazeboy, I got the same update.
Thanks Cujo, I”m running Windows and Firefox, so I appriciate the headsup.
Firefox must be doing very well against IE to get a Trojan Horse?
kristinejoy @ 2:10 pm (#36) - I think it’s sorta funny. Ann Coulter isn’t young, and she’s been “writing” for some time. She should have her own style by now. Of course, it could be that it’s young George she’s been plagarizing.
ewwww, kristine joy 2:10, I bet BowTieBoy1.0 won’t like that comparison one bit! I wouldn’t want to be at the Martha’s Vineyard Stop & Shop this weekend when Tweety runs into George after comparing Mr. Will to Coulter. Pundit-brawl in produce, aisle 18!
so, spazeboy, does PDT mean that you’re borrowing the Burberry Laptop from kobe?
I agree with the comments about the Clinton robo calls. If I hadn’t known it was Clinton, I wouldn’t have known it was Clinton. It was just plain strange and amateurish. For which I was profoundly grateful. Maybe even this will backfire! A girl can dream, can’t she?

“…proud that we’ve been friends all these years…”
Whoa…who does Big Dog consider to be an enemy?
Proving the maxim that in politics there are no enemies - only alliances.
The robo-calls will certainly backfire privately if they were done without Mrs. HillDog’s permission, which I suspect they might have been. After all, has the Lieberman campaign shown any respect for any parties involved in this primary?
Constituents, no.
Primary voters, no.
Opponent, no.
Opponent’s supporters, no.
Own supporters, now, even the ex-President, not so much.
Sorta related to the robo-calls, Lieberman’s first Clinton ad is up at his site, and now at YouTube.
I suspect that avoiding questions and constituents is more and more the way for entrenched incumbents. Didn’t the Crashing the Gates have a hard time actually meeting congress critters? And how about the Roots project?
I don’t think these critters want to answer questions from anyone because they would have to stake out a position and defend it… and usually in the case of incumbent critters someone already bought their positions… or they don’t want to offend someone who might be.
TERM LIMITS through them all out! There is plenty of talent to run the government if all you had to do was give 2 - 6 yrs of your life.
Spazeboy is so cute… and motivated. *sigh*
Move to Texas! lol
Ok… enough of my foolishness. Thanks for local perspective on this. The Lamont campaign has seen a fair amount of my money go their direction. Nice to see some of the fruits of that “sacrifice.”
just watched the Clinton TV spot … Bill and the video are really pumped up and hyper — then Joe comes on with his required tagline so cooly and unemotionally — sounding sooo bored and uninvolved!
It occurs to me that Joe Lieberman is having a midlife crisis of some kind. He doesn’t know who he is. That’s why he can’t answer any questions. He doesn’t know what the right answers are anymore. Like the typical aristocrat, he’s not used to thinking or caring about who suffers when he acts (or doesn’t). The bit he used the past — lovable, goofy, droopy guy — doesn’t cut it in this age when all of a sudden things matter.
Is Lieberman known for his expertise in any area? Is there anything he’s gotten involved in, passionate about, in his years of public servce? You know, like Senator Kennedy cares about health care and Al Gore cared about the environment and technology, Senator Jeffords cares about mental health services. Even Hillary Clinton I think genuinely cares about children’s issues. I think Barbara Boxer is passionate about good government, and Joe Biden — for all his bloviating — cares about and is knowledgeable about foreign policy.
What does Joe Lieberman love — besides coming up with cute nicknames for himself? I can’t think of anything. Maybe that’s why he hasn’t got anything to say?
NefLes, did you slip back into the guise of Leslie in CA for a bit last night, or did Kludge’s fine vedge have me hallucinating again?
Grrl, I confuse easily. Hep me out here.
Haven’t had time to read the comments or actually listen to the Bubba Tape, but I do remember CTBob saying yesterdsay he had done some special editing to his voice mail recording from B. Dawg and we’d see in on Youtube. Perhaps this is why you think it’s not like Bubba - it’s not. And if it’s not, it would behoove CTBob to say so.
Spazeboy -
You and the rest of the CT Bloggers are at least three steps of each move Lieberman tries to make.
You have identified that fact that Lieberman has now tacked away from denegrating his opponent as a single issue candidate, with that issue being the war in Iraq.
Apparently, Lieberman has come to realize that that, even if what he was alleging about Lamont were true, the war is a pretting fucking big issue.
Talking about it as “just one issue” is insulting to our troops and to all taxpayers who are forced to fund this misadventure.
Now, Lieberman is running scared on the war and no longer wants to talk about it. He knows that the issue is a massive loser for him and his original decision to harp on it as the distinction between himself and Lamont is a failure.
You CT Bloggers have identified - in real time - Lieberman’s tactical maneuver to get away from the war in Iraq.
Lieberman was hoping nobody would really pick up on his new strategy.
Now Lieberman is worse off than ever - he is in a defensive posture, not even willing to answer questions about the very issue that he chose to use to distinguish himself from Lamont originally. He is on the retreat.
As much as we all disdain Bush, he is disciplined in his main political tactic, which is to stick with a stated position without regard for the facts on the ground. In so doing, he could look “strong” and also, through the Republican noise machine, actually control the media narrative to some extent.
When Lieberman originally decided to make the war a primary point of distinction from Lamont in his campaign, Lieberman probably thought that his stance on the war would make him look strong and principled.
The problem for him is that the people of CT and the Bloggers of CT were able to fight through the blatant falsehoods about the situation in Iraq - they weren’t fooled into thinking the war is going well - and the media in CT couldn’t be swayed into going along with Lieberman the way the national press has capitulated to Bush.
So now, with the truth about Iraq in plain sight for all to behold, Lieberman has been
forced to run away from his original position.
To be clear, Lieberman can’t change his position on the war - that would be suicide. But what he has decided to do is lie low and hope no one will call him on it.
Tough shit for Joe. The people of CT are on to Lieberman’s newest gambit.
Lieberman no longer has a leg to stand on - the projection of “strength” he hoped to generate by holding a steady position is ruined by his decision to hide from questions on the war.
What next? Keep up the pressure. Declare to one and all that Lieberman is hiding from the very issue that he founded his campaign upon.
Why is he hiding? Because the war in Iraq is an abject failure and Lieberman, as one of the foremost proponents of the war and apologists for Bush, can’t bring himself to admit it.
And so he hides.
This is the truth, share it with everyone you know.
Earlier today, I caught Al Franken’s regular, weekly interview of Tom Oliphant, who made the point that some of the more desperate Republican candidates are beginning to make rookie mistakes (e.g., Steele, Harris, DeWine) as it dawns on them that running a conventional campaign won’t work.
Now Demi*-Overlord Kos checks in with this tidbit:
Look out spazeboy, you might be next on their list!
* Demi because he still reports to Supreme Overlord Kobe. Not to be confused with Demi Moore or Michael Moore. Check your local listings. Your mileage may vary. Not available in states where prohibited by law or in months ending in “r”.
omg - joe does the bill hug in the new commercial. was that bit of creepiness supposed to counter the george kiss?
Mommybrain
CTBob added some sound effects to the end (the portion of the video after the call), and the commentary (in the form of text on the screen).
The poor editing of the call can be heard in the audio-only recording posted at ConnecticutBLOG.
mommybrain, I think CT-Bob’s audio sounds exactly like the Clinton speech. My understanding from another fdl commenter was that the robo-call was, in fact, badly edited speech snippets. If you’re correct and CT-Bob has modified his message machine’s audio of the Clinton robo-call, it would behoove him to say so.
I for one am not sure that is the case.
It will be easy for CT-Bob to resolve this. I’ve asked him to do so on his blog as well.
ps very good to hear from you today.
It seems Lieberman’s campaign has shaken off its doldrums somewhat since the Clinton visit on Monday. I’m wondering if perhaps Clinton gave Joe’s campaign some people to do things right. It’s too bad, I really wish Clinton wasn’t trying to hard to save Lieberman. We don’t need him around anymore.
“I found it more than a little curious that Senator Lieberman would hold the highly regarded and much respected New York Times…
Can’t believe an FDLer let that one pass unless it was out of courtesy.
Ground control to Spazeboy: you were being sarcastic?

No, not being sarcastic really. I mean, I’m not someone who loves everything that the NYTimes or any newspaper puts out…I embellished my point about the Times too much, that’s for sure, because I can’t defend it. ;)
Great video by CTBob. The only thing it lacked was a laugh track. :)
Sorry. Should be LindaR.
al-Scooter 2:37,
I wondered about that NRSC poll. Do you suppose they need a female boogeywoman as well? It seems to me that Hillary, Barbra Streisand, and Jane Fonda don’t work as well for them anymore. I wonder if they polled the distaff poodles –perhaps a Katie or a Lucy would stir up the base for the GOP?
Imagine a poll about Kos ! Oh, my, the dinosaurs do writhe as they gymbal!
Mommybrain–
I haven’t listeded to CTBob’s version. My earlier comments were about the robo call I found on my answering machine last night. It was of poor quality, and if you hadn’t been paying attention to political events in CT this week, it might be difficult to know it was Clinton–I’m not even positive that he says “I’m Bill Clinton”–it’s excerpts from his speech, and it’s hard to tell who it is.
al-scooter @ 2:37
Tom Oliphant is often the best part of Al Franken’s show. Do you know if the podcast is available anywhere for free?
DefJef 53:
I never really was a fan of term limits for lots of reasons, but I’m starting to come around to the idea it’s the only way to clear out the deadwood and old, rotting ideas. Some good public servants it would be a shame to lose, but on balance, since campaign finance reform just isn’t taking hold, it may be the only way.
lotus 57, my bad - I was on a different computer and forgot to input my new moniker.

Gotta YouTube question am hoping somebody knows the answer to.
My video plays the “YouTube” gigs, but no audio accompaniment.
Audio works on other stuff, tho’, so it ain’t like I gots no audio t’all. Just “YouTube”. (And “ram” files, too, I notice, fwiw.)
Tried switching the setting in the YouTube deal from “Line 0 Modem” to “ESS Allegro”, but no help there neither.
So tried subbing Windoze Media Player and Media Player Classic for the YouTube interface (c&p’ed the YouTube link into the URL fields for WMP ‘n MPC), but the former says “cannot play the file” ‘n latter says “file cannot be rendered”.
So no go.
Any ideers on simple stuff I’m stupidly missing?

Peterr 79, I knew the revs would crack under the pressure.
Spazeboy,
Are you going to get some video of Michael Schiavo with Ned Lamont?
Lizzy,
Yes! (I’m really going now)
The Lamont Campaign ought to run a commercial first showing Joe Liberman’s speech from the floor of the Senate castigating Bill Clinton’s behavior, then showing a recent buddy-buddy photo, and ask: “If Lieberman still thinks that Clinton is such a threat to the morals of our country, why is Joe so desperate to pal around with him?”
rilly wish our RevDeb could see that, op99, i guess she’s waaaaaaay offline in the Northland, but i’m so happy you shared it (and peter peeked!)

TeddySanFran, Beau is truly cool and to think he is so young…Bright Future in front of him.
Ned’s going to campaign with Michael Shiavo?
I was always on his side, but I can’t believe this would help him.
He’s on the right side of the issue, and I think people know that.
Am I being too cautious?
Huckermill - Nice to see you again. Re YouTube: Do you have the latest Flash player installed? I don’t have a direct link handy, but if you go to www.adobe.com you should be able to find it. Might fix your audio problem.
FDL’ers - Wow! Another great bunch of posts and comments today.
little dog -
I’m kinda with you on the Schiavo thing. Although I hear he’s very charming in person and a charismatic speaker, so it might not be a bad thing. But I sort of cringed when I first heard the news.
Teddy SF’s one of FDL’s fancier sickos. Most of the rest of us are plain-wrap.
…and your little dog too & al-S @ 3:03
Thanks for the response. I only just joined the ipod world a few months ago myself.
campaigning with Michael Schiavo will remind folks that Holy Joe was out there with the fundies on that kerfuffle …
:96—Outstanding idea, justathought.
Lieberman inhumanely supported Gov. Jeb Bush (R-FL.) in his ill-conceived attempt to prolong Terry Schiavo’s life, rather than let her pass with dignity… strike one!
Joe Lieberman supports the DLC… strike two!!
Senator Joesph Lieberman is a strong advocate of the Bush war in Iraq, and the Bush proxy war in Lebanon… strike three!!!
He’s outta there!
Batter up: Ned Lamont!
little dog 101 - I worry about that too. A lot.
I noticed that Michael Shiavo was signing books at YKos, and I thought, “What’s HE doing here?” But I’ve since seen him on 60 Minutes, I guess on his book-tour, and he re-focuses the energy around the issue of his wife’s privacy and the sanctity of THEIR marriage. More than 3/4s of Americans were on Michael’s side (and Terri’s).
If Ned benefits by highlighting another aspect of RGJoe’s assault on all our privacy (and I think he will benefit) then Michael Shiavo is the right man to stand by his side. It makes RGJoe look craven (again!) for joining these cowards in W’s midnight ride from Crawford to comply with Fristy’s later-discredited video-diagnosis.
All around, Terri Shiavo’s death is a bad chapter for RGJoe and a bad chapter for BushCo, Inc. One I don’t mind Ned using Michael Shiavo to remind Nutmeggers about.
========
Had Enough?

many people (not us) miss the elephant in the room, if the schiavo thing goes off well, as it should, it will help lamont. nobody much liked what frist, bush et al did with terri schiavo’s political football.
BTW, Spazeboy, I know you’re gone with your sweetie now, but you’re amazing! :-) Great piece.
I’m sorry I wasn’t here on FDL on Tuesday when my Boxer piece went up. I was in a happier place, though - at the pro-choice gathering for Ned Lamont and later hanging with Jane herself for her birthday. Woo hoo!
Today’s my birthday and I’m stuck at home. It’s been a pretty depressing day, actually. But I’m saving the wish on my candle for August 8 and the real celebration (I hope) on August 9!
I think Michael Schiavo would be an asset to reach any sane voter. He’s living proof of the worse kind of goverment infringment.
See ya later - it’s thundering here.
