The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will be holding hearing(s) beginning today on the formal confirmation process for John Bolton to be the US Ambassador to the UN.
The hearings will be broadcast on C-Span3 beginning at 9:30 am ET, and I’m going to try to watch — although I can’t promise anything, since the peanut is home with me today and the last time I tried to watch Bolton on TV she took one look at him, screamed and ran out of the room crying…so it’s anyone’s guess how long he’ll be on at our house because, frankly, her happiness and lack of abject terror is more important to me. (True story, she saw him and screamed. I kid you not.)
What, you say? Isn’t he already our UN Ambassador? Well yes, at the moment, via a recess appointment by George Bush when the Foreign Relations Committee pretty much threw up their hands in disgust at Bolton and Bush the last time around.
But this time, the Bush Administration is counting on the mess they have made of foreign policy, the nasty conflagration between Israel and Lebanon, the Kim Jong Il North Korea get a UN Post for Free card, and a whole host of other "look over there, something shiny" issues to slip Bolton in under the radar. Mainly, I think they are just hoping that no one is watching and that they’ve worn Congress down.
Well, they would be wrong. A LOT of bloggers have been working their butts off on this issue, and I wanted to bring a round-up of some of the latest information from people who are much more experts on this subject than I am, so we can all be more informed this morning before Bolton’s testimony begins.
– StopBolton.org is a good place to start on why the Bolton nomination should be…erm..stopped.
– Steve Clemons has a great round-up post on HuffPo with lots and lots of useful links. Steve also has a piece on how the Bush Administration is pushing Jewish groups to support Bolton "with the arm-twisting innuendo that in this time of crisis in the Middle East, American Jews need to line up behind the guy Jesse Helms said ‘is the kind of man with whom I would want to stand at Armageddon, if it should be my lot to be on hand for what is forecast to be the final battle between good and evil in this world.’" (Am I the only one that finds it creepy to phrase things in this over-the-top-evangelical-revival-tent style to American Jewish groups?)
– Sen. Chris Dodd is promising a "bruising battle" over the Bolton nomination. (And the Bolton photo on the MSNBC website is particularly amusing as well.) Sen. Russ Feingold is also not happy with Bolton, and has raised the word filibuster, or so I hear.
– Speaking of filibuster, RawStory is quoting a Roll Call article that says Frist may not have the votes to overcome a filibuster on Bolton, should he get out of the Foreign Relations Committee. (Note to Bush: There is loyalty to your friends, and then there is asinine stubborness and political idiocy….I’m just saying.)
– ThinkProgress details the "do as I command, not as I actually do" stylings of John Bolton when it comes to official travel with the Security Council.
– The LATimes calls Bolton’s brand of Ambassadorship "Sledgehammer Diplomacy." (Hint: They aren’t keen on him.)
It’s true that Bolton has not been a total disaster. Under his tenure, the U.S. signed on to an important agreement asserting the principle that states have the responsibility to protect their citizens from mass slaughter and could face U.N. action if they don’t. His stands on human rights and organizational reform have for the most part been highly principled. The problem is that he doesn’t know when to compromise, without which progress in an international body is impossible.
Bolton’s sledgehammer diplomacy has poisoned an already tense relationship between the U.S. and other countries, including our most important allies. U.N. members see American reform proposals not as ways to improve the organization but as hidden attempts to enhance U.S. power. This helps explain why Bolton has largely failed to achieve his stated goals — or much of anything else.
They go on to say that Bolton should be voted down straight out because he is a poor choice, but they also aren’t too keen on the filibuster, either. Funny, newspapers seem to want the members of Congress to actually DO their jobs and vote on principle instead of political expediency grounds. The WaPo isn’t exactly a fan either. The AP (via the NYTimes) has some additional details.
When I was in college, I worked for an NGO at the UN. I’ve been in the General Assembly Hall, the Security Council Chambers and all over the building, and I’ve met a number of the people who have dedicated their lives to striving toward peaceful solutions first, a commitment to human rights for all people around our globe, and a compassion for those who are caught in the crossfire on conflict and global disaster. I have personally met two US Ambassadors to the UN, one in the George H.W. Bush years, and one in the Clinton years — and both were thoughtful, considerate, accomplished and diplomatic. (I don’t say this is a boost to me, but by way of comparison to Bolton, whose demanding and gruff personality makes Jean Kirkpatrick look cuddly.)
It is not a plus to have a polarizing figure in the position of UN Ambassador. Whatever you think of the institution (and yes, I am well aware that it also has its faults and that wingnuts detest it), the world in which we live today is spiraling out of kilter because President Bush cannot manage the simplest diplomatic mission (I give you Exhibit A and Exhibit B and Exhibit C, just for starters.). That his chief foreign policy advisors are similarly skill impaired is dangerous for all of us.
For all our sakes, we need someone who can do the job — the whole job — and not just be a skunk at the party. John Bolton? Just plain wrong.
(The above drawing of John Bolton comes from the incredibly talented Cox and Forkum. If you haven’t seen their editorial cartoons — or their fantastic website — get thee to this link. Honestly, some of the best satire out there — with drawings that are gorgeously done, and always spot on. No idea how anyone can be this consistently great. Just look at the shading on Bolton’s droopy skin, his every wrinkle and furrow, and the petulant look that says "what the hell am I doing here with you?" — truly, a spot on drawing that captures the essence of Bolton.)

Mornin’, Christy – another day, another Excedrin…
Not real confident that Bolton will get the heave-ho, not with Voinovich caving and Hillary and Schumer pondering doing the same.
Where are these people’s spines???
Now, see – that’s what I get for typing more than one word – *g*
Oh, well – close will do this morning.
Anne — I’m not certain on the Schumer and HRC reporting, since it’s coming from NewsMax and the NYSun. I think they are being pushed by some of the conservative Jewish groups that Steve Clemons talked about — who are being pushed directly by the WH. NY politics can be tricky, but I’m not certain which they’ll go, one way or the other, until Bolton comes to a vote. I think the public reports are more an exercise in spin and push than anything else, because there are no quotes that I’ve seen from either one of them.
Yay for Chris Dodd! It’s nice to have a Senator who doesn’t kiss the President’s ass all the time.
Go Ned!
While beirut burns the
bitchwill play the piano, arghhhhhhhhhhh[ Moderator: Condi may be reprehensible but dont be sexist about it! ]
I can’t promise anything, since the peanut is home with me today and the last time I tried to watch Bolton on TV she took one look at him, screamed and ran out of the room crying…
Smart kid. Some kids quickly sense the essence of people’s character. Bolton is a sadistic creep, and it comes out on TV. I feel sorry for the people who have to deal with this bastard in person. Bush is a jackass for inflicting this cretin on the UN.
Sure hope you’re right, Christy – Bolton is just so what the world does not need right now, when the tiniest spark – the wrong word, the wrong tone – might be all it would take to set more of the world on fire.
Between Rice, who just has no power or strength in this latest conflict, and Bolton, who is very nearly a caricature of The Angry Man, I just am unable to understand why these people are in the positions they are in.
While Tom Hanks is touring all the major league ballparks as his 50th birthday present to himself, Bush must have decided that for his 60th birthday, he was going to piss off the leaders of every nation in the world before leaving office. Sad to say, he might actually reach his goal.
I would hope that Bolton’s performance to date would sway fence-sitters to vote against the nomination. Oh wait, this is the US government, where facts do not apply.
Am I correct that the fact that he was a recess appointment is be a negative for him since, because of his asshole-like personality, he had to be installed when nobody was around?
Come to think of it, all Chimpy’s appointments have been recess appointments on account of the fact Chimpy has been at recess since he went AWOL from the Air National Guard — using the constitution as his playground.
Maybe Harriet Miers would be a better choice?
I saw him in an airport once. He is pathetically small. Napolean complex?
Mark B. at 7 — yeah, it was very odd. She’s usually very even tempered, but the moment he came on the screen for his testimony before whatever committee session I was watching, she pointed at him, screamed and ran off crying. I don’t know if it was the mustache or what (although Mr. ReddHedd has a goatee, so it’s not as though she isn’t used to whiskers…)
In any case, I’m not likely to get to watch a lot of the hearing if that persists today. Luckily, they are doing coverage over at TPM Cafe, and I believe Steve Clemons said on Washington Note that he was personally going to the hearing — so I’m sure there will be lots out there, for those who want a play by play. I’d really appreciate it if anyone is watching, if they could drop a note here if anything of note occurs. I’m going to count on catching a replay of the coverage later this evening, as C-Span is generally great about putting the C-Span3 coverage somewhere on 1 ot 2 later in the day.
Good Mornin’ Firedogs,
random ramblings -
Bolton is what brought me to blogs initially – TPM & Clemons, leading to Atrios who in turn helped me find my tribe here at the Lake – so it’s come full circle
so outraged, I’m guffawing – yet more Wingnut Welfare
The Clemons article on outreach to American Jews – using the son of one of the Greenberg-Trautig principals – G-T has spent the last 3 years painting a self portrait of this upstanding firm that was blindsided by this barracuda Abramoff – who of course, they immediately excised and then performed ablutions to return to their ol pristine selves – and here they are with direct connections to WH – incestuous bastards !
and at some point there’s gonna be a rant about the tractor beam power AIPAC has on ALL U.S. politicians – watched famed contortionist Bill Richardson do his thing on Countdown last night – giving 110% in his efforts to not say anything remotely negative about what the Israelis are up to – friggin’ cowards
Peanut screaming at the sight of revoltin Bolten: Kids often have excellent radar until adults mess them up with their prejudices & biases.
That would have been a fantastic video.
egregious 10- so Bolton is one of Dubya’s Oompa-Loompas?
egregious at 10 — you know, I have no idea. I’ve met his good buddy Frank Gaffney, and he was just a jerk to everyone around him. He was the keynote speaker at a conference at UPenn, and simply was the biggest ass to everyone around him the entire time. It may just be a neocon character trait — Cheney, Gaffney, Bolton, Addington, Libby…am trying to come up with one that I’ve heard is pleasant, and I’m drawing a blank. Anyone?
This may not seem exactly OT, but I think it is. Probably was already posted on late night (nothing gets past this crew)
Via rawstory, James Bamford has a Rolling Stones article out that makes your head hurt (sorry Anne)
http://www.rollingstone.com/po…..e_next_war
It’s about Larry Franklin in Feith’s office, the espionage activities, Chalabi, etc. and finishes with Bolton picking up the verbal baton on war with IRAN.
The heart of Bamford’s story is that while we were barely rolling to Iraq, Feith’s OSP was spinning the war with IRAN reality and trying to network it with AIPAC.
My take is FBI has been between a rock and a hard place all throught this administration. Not a chocolates and flowers relationship when they are having to keep the OVP’s “favorite child” OSP from committing treason and harming the country. Not too fun to be investigating Chalabi and his hand off of things like NSA codebreaking info to Iran – only to have him show up in the country under the protective wing of the VP and Rice and not be able to do a thing. It boggles your mind when you sit back and think about it.
Bolton’s name is touches on all the stories too. From visits to Miller, to the Rockefeller requests that were never turned over, to the AIPAC follow ups after Franklin got the tap on the shoulder.
As a side note, it makes it that much more laughable, that Feith, who was completely led by thenose by Chalabi and Iranian interests, is now teaching and writing about fighting terrorism.
Anything more on the rumor that Clinton & Shumer may vote for Bolten? Very disturbing, if true.
Who are we kidding? The dems will voice their “serious reservations” and roll over.
“Via rawstory, James Bamford has a Rolling Stones article out that makes your head hurt.”
I agree. emptywheel’s latest is about this.
Will the questions of the CIA intercepts against unnamed Americans that Bolton gathered for his private use come up again? Or the terrorizing of staffers, chasing them through hallways like a drunken maniac? Or will the Democratic senators be spineless again and defer to Ceasar Bush’s powers to run his kingdom any way he sees fit?
Bolton always appears to be so angry. Every photo I see of him looks as though he has this huge chip on his shoulder. Of course he serves a purpose. He’s a lightning rod as is Cheney. These two are great for deflecting from that other angry little man, George W. Bush. I’m not sure getting rid of Bolton will make a whole lot of difference anyway. With or without this character, Cheney will still call the foreign policy shots. The only thing good about Bolton is that he’s not Secretary of Defense.
Even if we could defeat Bolton’s nomination, I doubt Bush would appoint anyone significantly better. With that said, though, Dems have to try. The occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan isn’t working so Bush wants to try Lebanon. Battling the WH on Bolton sends a message.
If they could at least fillibuster/stall it until after Ned kicks Joe’s ass in the primary on August 8, it might really help. Seeing Whinerman lose his own primary imo has the potential to drag the entire polictical spectrum, Republicans and Democrats closer to the center. It also might help defeat Bolton and speed our withdrawal from occupying countries in the ME.
puppethead at 20 — I don’t know. But I was wondering the same thing as I was researching this article. There is not a lot of coverage on Democrats and hearing strategy this time around — there was the last time, mainly because Voinovich was a big question mark, and that was an angle that reporters found interesting. But aside from the Dodd and Feingold pieces (and the Feingold one was local Wisconsin media), there wasn’t much else on it. I’m hoping for spine from the Dems…this would be one time that we could really use it.
You know, I was fiercely opposed to Bolton the first time round and still am, but instead of being hyper this time; I feel hopeless and a sense that it does not matter at all as long as this admin is in power and the govt in general cannot bring themselves to be honest in any way. This blind support for Israeli action is just too much to bear. When both houses vote in solidarity with Israel and her actions of collective punishment, etc. I see no hope. Constant blocking of UN resolutions and now statements just makes me throw my hands up and bang my head. No call for a cease fire to work toward peace. Now, the entire region is at risk. Diplomacy is dead, so why bother putting anyone but an arrogant bully in as ambassador?
Some Arab countries may have issued a statement condemning the actions of Hizbollah– Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and now Iraq because of pressure from the Democrats– but you can bet their people are angry and grieving. If I think our actions are unfair and disingenuous, imagine how they feel?????? Now Zawahiri has a tape out calling for unification of all against Israel and the West and the leaders of the Arab world.
No diplomacy, no evenhandedness, no call for an end to violence. No attempt to broker a just peace in the ME so that Israelis and Palestinians can live as humans ought to, no attempt to negotiate with North Korea, etc. Ruin and death in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nothing but bellicose ranting and confabulation. I’m really starting to believe that war without end is the goal of many.
(end rant)
Not to change the subject – ok I am changing the subject, Emptywheel has a reel good one this morning.
He’s the wrong person on so many levels. With the failed diplomatic policies of this adminstration, and a president hovering around the low 30s in approval, it blows my mind that elected officials would even consider voting for this creep.
ot- i saw a very enlighting documentary last night called “The forgotten refugees”. It really helps explain alot of the history of the arab- judaic conflict. It is frightening how many years this conflict has existed. Although i am usually an optomist….. the hatred, mistrust etc. is so deep rooted a solution seems i fear……unattainable
Bolton hearings are starting on CSpan3 (streaming video available) and also on CSpan Radio which is also available streamed which is suitable for dialup connections.
I don’t know if Emptywheel has any kids or not.
But if she does, I bet they stay the hell away from the cookie jar.
“I see no hope.”
I think the strength Ned’s campaign has shown is a ray of hope. Whinerman threw everything he could at him, and Ned’s poll numbers continue to surge.
The key is Lebanon’s government. If it crumbles and there is enormous pressure on it, it takes the ME one big step closer to regional civil war on many different fronts. If the Lebanon government can survive until after Ned beats Joe in the primary, it might serve as a wakeup call to both parties. That in turn might lead to a more measured response from Israel and the U.S. That’s really thin, I know, but that’s what I’m going with until lunch.
From the little media coverage I have seen, it seems the TM is still covering Lebanon as a humanitarian crisis. IMO, that’s relatively speaking, real good.
Arial Sharon is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful human being I ever hope to meet!
John c.
anderson cooper has an interesting take on how hezbolla is playing with the media
http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Program…..6/07/our-v ery-strange-day-with-hezbollah.html
maybe you should read it after lunch :(
Steve Clemons is my go-to source for all things Bolton, and the picture he’s painted over time is not at all pretty. Shorter Clemons: be afraid. Be very afraid.
“Sledgehammer diplomacy” is a very good phrase, and in that respect, Bolton represents the policy of the Bush administration perfectly. Sadly, that “policy” is costing a helluva lot . . . unless you’re in the military support and supply business.
Mary – I’ve not had the chance to read the RS article, but plan to – even if it does make my head hurt…(which it does not, so far) *g*
As bad as things are now, it just chills me to the bone to think how much they actually wanted to do, but were unable to implement.
Should be Exhibit One in an argument against the consolidation of power in the chief executive.
And it raises a “chicken or the egg” question: Which came first – the plans to go to war, or the plans to increase power? Or did they decide, in the midst of war planning, that it could provide perfect cover for a run on total control?
Can’t decide if we should be glad they are so incompetent at what they do, or afraid of that incompetence. Probably both…sigh
Kissinger’s a Bolton fan? Yeesh.
Kissinger’s a war criminal? yup !
yup!
thinkprogress has a new post up about why Bolton sucks:
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/…..n-failure/
Anne – here’s synopsis.
http://www.rollingstone.com/po…..e_next_war
The article talks about frustration in Feith’s OSP that the Iraq war was going to be conducted without a simultaneous or near simultaneous Iranian front and Franklin’s decision (you really think all by himself???) to enlist AIPAC to provide additional pressure for an war with Iran. His handoff of secret info – a National Security Presidential Directive prepared by OSP and advocating regime change in Iran – was offered up for AIPAC to have additional ammunition in their attempts to force the war in Iran.
It also discusses meetings in Rome, coordinated by Ledeen, with Iranians. Ledeen, contacted by his *pal* Ghorbanifar (from Iran/Contra days) had “explosive information” about plans to kill Americans in Afghanistan and shopped the meeting to and through Hadley and Khalilzad. Off go Ledeen, Larry Franklin and Harold Rhode (a friend of Chalabi and according to the article, a man the CIA discovered passing “mind boggling” info to Israel).
Completing the rogues’ gallery that assembled in Rome that day was the man who helped Ledeen arrange the meeting: Nicolò Pollari, the director of Italy’s military intelligence. Only two months earlier, Pollari had informed the Bush administration that Saddam Hussein had obtained uranium from West Africa—a key piece of false intelligence that Bush used to justify the invasion of Iraq.
Not in the article – Pollari’s second in command and other SISMI operatives are currently being investigated in Italy for their assistance in a CIA abduction and some related matters. A man who was involved in the surveillance of SISMI has recently “jumped from an overpass” to his death (Laura Rozen has more on that and on relationships to investigations of telecoms, including a Greek investigation that has also recently involved an investigator who “hung himself”).
The article does disclose plans to deal with the MEK as a front group to help spearhead a call for the overthrow of Iran (like Chalabi’s group for Iraq) although Ledeen denies that happened. And there’s a fun reference to Curt Weldon (see yesterday’s thread on Sestak who is running against Weldon) being taken down the path by Ghorbanifar. It also gives a sidelight into how AIPAC lobbyists planted a story in WaPo to help keep the “invade Iran” pot stirred.
In the end, after Franklin was arrested, the WH has pretty much shut down any further investigation of Chalabi. And over the last six months, it seems to have adopted the Feith OSP plan for Iran.
In May, Bush’s ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton, appeared before AIPAC’s annual conference and warned that Iran “must be made aware that if it continues down the path of international isolation, there will be tangible and painful consequences.”
It finishes with quotes Ledeen’s July 13 piece in theNational Review that exhorts US war with both Iran and Syria.
If you want to call Cox and Forkum “talented”, you may as call our plastic-turkee-preznit “genius”.
Sorry, but for a couple cartoon hacks who still seem to be getting a handle on their pencil rendering skills and citing Little Green Footballs as a news source, C&F will still have to keep their day jobs as peep show booth scrubbers while trying to find that elusive teh funny.
Talented my ass, they have a Day by Day banner on their website for chrissakes.
Kissinger IS a war criminal and a murderer. So IS Rice.
Thanks lo, I couldn’t get the link to work, but I’ll look for it later.
I’m most concerned about the U.S.’ “extreme rendition” policy in the Middle East and our policy of putting the non-military hostages in secret prisons where we torture them. We the U.S. gives Hezbollah all the moral room they need to kidnap “soldiers,” because it’s less serious in the eyes of the world.
I agree with you about how deep the enmity is, but the British and the IRA went through this in Northern Ireland albeit on a much smaller scale. Sinn Fein was the political arm of the IRA. It seems to me that Hezbollah has adopted a similar structure, one political, the other armed.
Good God, Mary – that’s just beyond my ability to fully process without needing to throw heavy objects as far as possible (and they frown on that where I work).
These people are certifiably insane.
When Jesse Helms said he wanted Bolton on his side in the last battle between good and evil, I don’t believe Jesse said which side he would be on.
Christy,
Smart kid you’ve got there.
Our 6YO came home from first grade and told us “My teacher says George Bush likes little children.” Aside from being disgusted that my kid’s teacher was probably a wingnut, I wondered to myself what he could have said to make her say that.
disruption! Pink Lady!
I’ll pay her bail !!!!!!
i just caught the end of a protestor being escorted out. did anyone see it?
w00t – “The man will only make war, not peace!” – as they escorted her from the room. Right on, sister. And they all just ignore that she was there.
Oklahoma kiddo @ 21,
I think you’re right about that, and it also answers Christy’s question @ 15. Bush is supposed to be likeable, since he’s not as visibly evil as some of his compatriots.
another protestor — old lady!!!
lo – that piece is on Cooper’s blog but is by Charlie Moore, a producer.
I’m not sure how it is a revelation of the media being played, when the same media can be exposed to the same stage managing with every Bush/AIPAC/AEI stagemanaged speech and never mention in those instances just how they were played; when they can go through extremely managed GITMO tours and not mention how they were played; when they can dutifully report talking points and never mention how they were played; when they can (as the Rolling Stones article shows) plant stories in WaPo and use CBS producers and never get around to mentioning how they were played; and they can look at new poll results that indicate that they have assisted in convincing 50% of Americans that Iraq DID, after all, have WMDs, and never mention how they were played.
It’s kind of predictable, and it seems unremarkable to me, that Hezbollah gave a stage production -I don’t know what anyone would have expected in a war zone. The only out of the ordinary thing is that the producer chooses, in this instance (that stands out in bold relief against all the other instances of participating in stage managed news) to point it out.
That’s the most interesting part to me.
Hezbollah are bad guys and it’s nice someone is recognizing their gaming. Wouldn’t it be just a bit more reassuring if there were any evidence whatsoever that the media was recognizing OTHER places where it is being gamed as well?
she also said “he is not representing us” “I do not want this man”
New Lady! ” I object! I am a citizen of the united states of America” “We are becoming known as the terrorists” “We are becoming known as the enemy!”
We are the terrorists says a dignified elderly protestor!
i bet dogs dont like bolton either….
ot…….saw the dixie chicks last night, they were fantastic!!!!! came on stage to “hail to the chief”
hehehe You guys are cracking me up — I’m working on something on the Bamford article. I swear, there is some continuum of thought around here some days. *G*
WRT Condi, emptywheel has a post from yesterday that suggests that Bush will fire her after November elections, because she is not tough enough on terror.
I am crying my eyes out at seeing PATRIOTS exhibiting Common Sense in their Senate – thank God for TIVO !
My comment about Condi went poof…me thinks this moderator is exercising tad much…*G*
Does that mean moderator thinks Condi is not a b*%#h or what?
I know this is off subject but this article in the Was Pos really upset me today. I have come to the conclusion that not only does GW Bush hate black people but old people, sick people, in fact I think he hates Americans in general, now our soldiers…who are willing to give their lives for us. It just make me sick. Check this article out.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01666.html
Larry – Perhaps it is that many prefer the b word not be applied indiscriminately, as being ad hominem rather than focused on her job competence.
He’s the wrong person on so many levels.
I first started to hate John Bolton when, as undersecretary for weapons control, he: a) scuttled the Small Arms Convention; b) scuttled the biological weapons convention; c) scuttled the chemical weapons convention.
Yosemite Bolton is a total shit, a diplomatic nightmare, and a representative of everything that’s fucked up about BushCo. I wouldn’t piss on him if he were on fire.
Christy Hardin Smith says: “It may just be a neocon character trait — Cheney, Gaffney, Bolton, Addington, Libby…am trying to come up with one that I’ve heard is pleasant, and I’m drawing a blank. Anyone?”
July 27th, 2006 at 6:10 am
Christy – is this phrase – control freak – what you’re looking for?
sherocket- thanks so much for clearing that up.
National Security Advisor Hadley is quite the neo-con and is considered rather pleasant — but on the other hand, Goering was widely known for his charming style too …
Stephen P, not all “control freaks” are as malevolent as that lot.
While Bolton and various Goopers are licking each other’s chops, you might find more interesting NYT’s
Biden should consider losing the comb-over.
bolton protesters made CNN tv now
pseudonymous in nc, thanks for the history on Bolton.
sherocket 68
All men should consider losing the comb over. On Joe it is especially bad I agree.
Thanks lotus at 7:19, that explains a lot.
NateC – thanks for the link. It’s heartbreaking. There was no “military mission” that could be accomplished. There still isn’t, but now that these troops have been committed over and over and over and have seen so many die and lose limbs and it hangs over them every single day — everybody wants it to have an end resolution that makes it all worth something.
Now it looks like that point is going to be more war with no goals in Iran or Syria or Lebanon or …
The only thing more unfair than bringing them back without having a clear accomplishment to show for the huge losses is to leave them there for more losses without sense or reason or achievable goals.
You never see even a flicker of sadness over what they’ve done in the eyes of any neocon.
Millineryman – Or, they should wear hats!
. . . “and several pro-Israel groups and prominent Jewish donors are rallying to funnel money and manpower to defend his seat.”
have been wondering all week if this was the nature of the fundraiser Boxer & Joe attended after being accosted by those vile bloggers the other day . . .
has info about that fundraiser appeared in the threads ?
It’s kind of predictable, and it seems unremarkable to me, that Hezbollah gave a stage production -I don’t know what anyone would have expected in a war zone.
Three words: ‘Israeli military censor.’
We were better informed that embed reports from the Iraqi invasion were subject to reporting restrictions than we are of Israel’s restrictions on the gathered cabloiders.
I cant recall exactly the names of the hosts of that private fundraiser but it didnt sound like they likely were Pentecostals …
sherocket Indeed, thanks for the hearty laugh. How oblivious I can be.
Christy
Thank you for posting on this. It is hard not to give in the sense of hopelesnees and inevitability that some commentors refrred to above. Don’t do it.
In the vein of FDR’s “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”
I would suggest that we have nothing to feel hopeless about uless we GIVE IN to hoplessness.
We are responsible for maintaining our own resolve, our own sense of purpose. Can’t blame our own moments of weakness on others.
Buck up. Have anoither cup of coffee and meet the day. Do SOMETHING, anything to thrwart the re appointment of Joltin’Bolten. Who knows, maybe you call, your emai, your fax will be the straw that breaks the camel’s back.
On a related theme. My own offspring was a pre-schooler during the Ken Starr witch hunt days. When they would have those shots of him in his driveway. my sweet little girl who always saw good in everyone, would ask me if he was a bad man or some kind of criminal.
I was planning a dinner party once and was working on some list or other and had the tv news on in the background. She suddenly made an impassioned plea that I not invite “that mean man”, meaning Starr–who was on the screen at that time.
It was actually sort of funny and no one could figure out where she got this from, since we really didn’t discuss the Starr investigation in front of her.
“out of the mouths of babes….”
Nate — Gee-Dubya hates us all, because you see, Saddam only tried to shoot his daddy. In effect, political effect, America ended his daddy’s presidential power. Thus, he will work his toddler-temper on all of us.
Or there is the Harken Energy he’s just totally incompetent theory….
Christy — Fi’s reaction sounds like a perfect example of last night’s conversation with Mommybrain and the power of instinct. Hope things are less stressful this morning for her because she’s empowered herself by taking proaction.
how nervous is lincoln chafee?
Bolton’s recess appointment is up in Januray ‘07, when the next congress is seated. Why redo his senate hearing now, with eveything that’s going on?
Maybe the GOP is really worried about losing the senate after all. If Dems were in charge there’s no way Bolton would be confirmed. He’d never get out of committee.
That’s my happy thought for the day!
In our household’s view, a Ned Lamont victory over Lieberman would be symbolic. It would perhaps jump-start an attitude of no more political machine stuff, no more politics as usual, and stop the Bush wars! Lamont: the anti-bully candidate. Lieberman: the bully puppet.
I am being such an obnoxious jerk today and I just cant stop whining !
Nate C – thanks for the link. I had a comment that may or may not show up but if it does it won’t hurt to have thanked you twice.
Anne – are there two Annes? Go read the Rozen info on what is going on in Italy to go with it and it makes for an interesting picture. Then tack on that the defense being used by the two lobbyists in their cases is that its not just Franklin passing classified info to them – that Rice and Hadley told them very similar things. They’ve been trying to get Rice and other officials subpoenaed, and I believe that things like privilege and state secrets are being floated to duck them.
Seriously – can you imagine being the FBI/legal team stuck with that case when you look around at what is going on around us?
pseudonymous in nc, thanks for the history on Bolton.
The guy who Bolton had kicked off the international monitoring board for chemical weapons is now the Brazilian ambassador to the UK. Google for ‘Jose Bustani’ and see what happened to him.
Christy if you are still around
Got an OT question.
Can you tell me when specifically Howie Klien is going to have his Dave Mejias piece? I have a rather large email list for LI that I want to alert b/c I think they would want to view that.

I know.(g) Perhaps there’s a better characterization of the people whom Christy mentioned; the phrase I chose is one of many possibilities.
Lieberman’s campaign already has millions and millions of dollars more than Ned Lamont – and I do not think the Israel situation is going to rescue his candidacy from its death throes.
Ned just needs to get out front on it and make his own reassuring comments -
please dont feed the trolls! if you hit F5, you will discover they’ve either gone or else changed their tune completely !
really, reddhedd,
was it necessary to include that flattering but misleading sketch of john bolton at the top of your column?
the sketch conveys anger but composure.
that is NOT john bolton.
put up a portrait photo, please.
only a photo can convey how angry
and unglued
john bolton is,
yosemite sam and the tasmanian devil in one personality -
the quintessential un-diplomat.
but, then, choosing talent suitable for a public office has never been a strength of the bush administration.
“Or, they should wear hats!”
For me, not so much.
Back when I taught college English, I used to finish off my tech-writing course with a unit on “Getting Your Fanny Gainfully Employ’.” It included prep of a good-to-go resume and a dress-up mock job interview. Will never forget this one kid who wore a baseball cap and funky duds every day but showed up for his “interview” in a great suit and no cap. Sure enough, at his young age, he was well on his way to bald.
But. Cleaned-up and sans doofus baseball cap, he was also drop-dead gorgeous. I actually gasped and couldn’t help falling out of “character” just long enough to tell him so. I hope he got the point.
That’s a huge catch Nate C imo.
That as strong a statement as I have seen in the WaPo against the Iraq/Afghanistan Occupation.
Anyone who likes it, can tell the WaPo about it online

July 27th, 2006 at 7:32 am
What do neoconservatives fear the most?
Thanks for the suggestions for reading up on all of this, Mary. Why do I have the feeling that us common folk are better educated on these connections and machinations than the folks sitting in Congress?
FBI folks on this case must feel they’ve gone down the rabbit hole and landed in a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum novel.
(P.S. There’s an “Anne Holliday,” and there’s me – just plain Anne – and there’s angie…it can get confusing!)

CNN: Floyd Landis may have won the Tour de France — but he’s also just tested positive for doping. Ruh-oh.
“I had a comment that may or may not show up but if it does it won’t hurt to have thanked you twice.“
I’m showing a terrific one at 7:28.
O/T kinda
very general question
If I were sitting next to a neo con at dinner and asked “What are your goals in the Middle East? ” what would be the answer ?
no, not what they are up to, or what they are really doing for that matter – what does their dogma say about goals for ME ?
lotus, i have been following the Landis story too. I hope it’s not true. He will be requesting a test on a second sample. They claim the initial test shows elevated levels of testosterone but more tests are needed. Hopefully it’s just the French being pissy (pun intended) about another American winning ‘their’ race.
I think the cartoonists are artistically talented, but their politics seem a little…wingnutty to me, frankly. Are you sure you endorse these guys?
Steve p, CPA
What neo cons fear the most is people who stand up to their bullying and call “bullshit”
That’s why they went so crzy over Joe Wilson, that’s why they went so crazy over Cindy Sheehan, that’s why they tried to stifle Sybil Edmonds, and Bunnytine (I love that name) and on and on.
That’s why they are so confused and confonded by Fitz, who refuses to engage tham and just keeps going along doing his thing like theydon’t even exist.
What they fear the most
PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT INTIMIDATED BY THEM

I’m 46 and have been going gray and losing my hair since I was 19. Sad becuase I had these great curls and jet black hair. I started shaving my head 10 years ago, I figured it was better to be proactive and not worry about it.
I will never understand the comb over, it’s right up there with the walrus mustache in my book.
Millenaryman
The walrus mustache is the one and only thing I like about Bolton. I love old fashioned references like that. And it takes some fashion courage to wear that day in and day out.
I am not snarking, I like it. On the right face I like a handlebar mustache as well. It is like performance art for the face.
I am such a nerd
Thanks JohnC – when they poof and don’t say moderation, I am that combo of low tech and bad typist that makes me think I may have deleted them. *g*
Thanks for the heads up on the emptywheel piece.
What I would really, really like to see in this hearing is someone push Bolton’s buttons to the point where his real personality is revealed in all it’s choleric glory.
Might give more than a few folks pause if they could see it for themselves.
Who or what is Bunnytine?
Anne
In Bolton’s case it might not be that hard to do. Except, somebody described him as “kiss up, kick down” personality types. Those sorts, being basically craven will do a complete Uriah Heap in the face of those who can benefit them, no matter how much groveling it entails.
So, maybe it would be hard. Now if a Staffer got in his face…

You have fortitude Anne. *g*
I don’t watch horror flicks – I’m too flinchy by nature.
I don’t guess the intercepts Rockefeller tried to get before will be brought up. Maybe someone will ask him if he took cookies to Judy Miller when he visited her in jail?
looseheadprop 103
Good point, I admire you for liking it on Bolton. I can’t seperate the man from the ’stache.
And handlebar mustaches on the right face, I’m right there with you on that one.
George Felix Allen is such a letdown after Paul Sarbane’s distinguished questioning …
lhp, I wish I could show you my photo of my great-uncle on my daddy’s side. He was a doctor and had one of the most luxuriant, well-groomed handlebars I’ve ever seen. Only problem was, both handles grew to his left, so even in this lovely studio photograph (daguerrotype?), he looks to be sitting in a high wind!
Pissy french moi
Neat screen name
Bunnytine (I forget her last name) was a chief contracting officer for a fedearl department who came to a senate hearing and refused to spout the party line. She gave specific examples of fraud, wasate and abuse in no -bid contracts to —wait for it —-Halliburton and others.
She was retaliated against and demoted for her trouble. Then they tried to smear her.
And –heaven smile on her forever–she just kept standing up to them. This sweet quiet model of respectibility and career civil service spoke ruth to power, got slapped hard for it and refused to back down.
if I have my way, someday, there will be building or a bridge or a something named after her. She reminds us that our government is made up of unsung heroes suffering career injury and career death leading to personal misfortune everyday–and we will never know their names. But like nameless soldiers on a foreign battlefield, they are sacrificing themsleves to at least slow down the onslaught of abuse and power grab by Bushco.
It’s the Bunnytines of this world that keep me from the feeling of disallusionment that Mary and I often dialogue about. I still believe that the best part of our government, are the people who have made government their life’s work and that they are an atidote, in many tiney ways that add up, to some of the worst that Bushco has tried but not yet succeeded in doing.
“kiss up, kick down” came from Carl Ford in orginial Bolten hearings..he gave awesome, forthright testimony. Too bad you have to be retired before you can be totally candid.
Good morning, everyone. How is everyone doing today? I’ve just gotten the courage to look at the news and to put up another screen with the Bolton hearing running behind FDL. Sigh.
Thank you lhp for your words of daily encouragement. We sorely need them right now.
By the way
In all the brohaha over Bolton
Let’s not forget the House is holding hearings on NSA spying today.
it’s like a three ring circus of bad government. you jsut don’t know where to watch when.
This is very overstimulating.
Totally OT, but my pet peeve is women who pluck or shave off their eyebrows, and then draw them on in eyebrow pencil in ways that nature never intended (and I am not ragging on those who have lost eyebrows to chemo or other illnesses) and which look like they were drawn on by a five-year old. I had an aunt who did that, and never understood it.
I saw a woman in the grocery store with drawn-on eyebrows that made her look like she was in perpetual amazement…wanted to tap her on the shoulder and ask if she had ever seen anyone with eyebrows like that. Plus, they were a hideous shade of almost-orange.
Why?
I present you Bunnatine Greenhouse:

“if I have my way, someday, there will be building or a bridge or a something named after her”
Put me down for that.
Deep in the FWIW column, until the bridge gets built, maybe FDL could consider down the road, giving out awards, Profiles in Courage, kind of stuff. Or perhaps invite her for an online chat, just like we do with authors, so she could see how much we appreciate her. IMO this isn’t even feasilble to consider until after the November elections.
lhp @ 78– I hear you, thanks for trying to lift my head up.
Apparently, PM Abbas says Israeli soldier could be released “imminently” acc to the crawl on cnn.

An email I just received from John Edwards links to this list of Dem Congressional candidates, from which he wants us recipients to choose the two he’ll especially support this fall. I note that Rick Penberthy (for one) isn’t there.
Would y’all please take a look and give me your best advice re my two votes? Howie Klein, if you’re here, please jump in.

lhp – I was going to ask if you saw the article PJEvans linked a day or two ago about funding crunch for USAttys offices, but now it will sound like I’m trying to be depressing. *g* The info about cases having to sit for lack of funds to do things as basic as get hard drive info converted – that is pretty astounding.
If you haven’t read Suskind’s The One Percent Doctrine you should pick it up bc his sources track with your observations about dismantling govt from within in a lot of very disturbing ways.
Sorry, I too don’t much like the character sketch at the top. The man is in truth much scarier than this to look at, and the artists really played down the mad white mustache and wierd hair to make him look more normal.
I can understand the peanut screaming at the sight of Bolton. The first time I saw him, I started screaming too, and I’m a 55-year-old man. In fact, I’m still screaming. Not just at that hideous visage that seems to bespeak so much inner evil. I’m also unhinged at the prospect of Schumer and Clinton supporting this violent, indefensible bastard. Of course, they will, for Israel’s sake. Talk about traitors. God help us!
someone should tell the comb-over brigade: if they’d shave their heads and get an earring, they’d take ten years off their appearance.
“when they poof and don’t say moderation,”
As I am sure you have already figured out, but for many others who, I am positive, had the identical question, hit F5.

I hope that we’ll see a beneficial Greenhouse effect someday very soon.
Dodd gets into Bolton’s intercepts of intel and names.
what a tortuous ‘explanation’.
Amen to FDL Honor Roll for Bunny!

Wow, what an incredibly brave woman that Bunnatine. Reading all the links provided.
wrt Ms. Greenhouse, I’d say pencil her in for Sat. Nov. 11. Just days after elections, and it happens to be Veteran’s Day (US) AND Remembrance Day (Can).
OT for Stephen
I didn’t forget. Last night I flipped through and its hard to point to specific who said what references on the “you’re dealing with dictators so you have to act like them and never lose face” approach; it’s more woven throughout. Here’s (excuse typos) a passage though (it took me awhile to type last night, so I’m cutting and pasting from Word – hopefully I won’t get the funny symbols for punctuation):
pp 263-264
The One Percent Doctrine Ron Suskind.
I’m no expert on the neocons, but I think they have two other drivers – one a desire to support Israel that could be admirable if it had not become so corrupted, and the other a fixed intense desire to use American military and economic strength to make other parts of the world “knuckle under” (a very recurring theme in Suskind’s book -the knuckle under approach). I think that goes to the Straussian elitism of the thinkers playing chess with the “little people” on the board as the pawns.
IM not superinformed and fairly biased opinion.
Awww doody . . .
I know this is EPU-ed, but just in case re Edwards’ list.
Patty Wetterling in MN–this is a very winnable race.
But where’s Colleen Rowley????? Also MN, she seriously needs help to be competitive.

Pity party for Preznit Poopypants?
I know, PS 136! This is looking susiciously DCCC-ish, innit?
The caricature is impressive!! (too bad the website is all right-wing stuff based on total lies, with a liberal-no pun intended-citing of Michelle Malkin)
What? I’m a liberal! I don’t condemn someone because of their political beliefs. Thus the praise for the caricature…
*running & hiding*
That’s a decent caricature of Bolton, but I clicked on the Cox and Forkum site and, hooboy, I don’t like their politics or their political heroes. I disagree with MyPetGloat that the cartoonists are talentless but, Christy, you should, without too much trouble, be able to find liberal cartoonists’ work to showcase!
Kerry’s up now.
Again, Bolton is “soooo snakes on a plane”.
vickie m at 142 — sometimes, it can be quite useful to look at the thinking on the other side. If for no other reason than to clarify where they are coming from — and the artwork there really does boil things down pretty sharply. *g*
