Last night there was a fundraiser by Connecticut Choice Voice and NOW for Ned Lamont. Connecticut Choice Voice is composed of leaders of the reproductive rights groups of Connecticut and includes Carolyn Treiss, head of CT-NARAL. Susan Yelon, head of Planned Parenthood-CT, along with Treiss, also voted as a delegate for Lamont at the Democratic Convention in May.
Nobody ever mentions this disconnect when they write about the endorsements given by the national arms of NARAL and PP to Lieberman. Instead, they let professional out-of-state LieberLiar Sean Smith get away with parotting nonsense about Lieberman’s 95% scorecard rating from NARAL as if that actually meant something. I had coffee with the fabulous CTBob this morning (whose Maura/Boxer video has now had over 40,000 page views on YouTube), one of the most passionate pro-chioce supporters I know — male or female. And I’m reminded of a telling comment Bob left here a while back:
I called Planned Parenthood and spoke to their media person a few weeks ago; I forget her name, but she was very firm in her support of their decision to endorse Joe Lieberman. She admitted that the “report card” on voting records of politicians is somewhat flawed, but they didn’t have any other way of rating a politician.
I asked her if Lieberman’s vote against confirming Judge Alito was considered a good thing on their report card, and she agreed that it was. When I explained that Lieberman’s REAL vote on Alito was the vote for cloture, she claimed that there wasn’t any way to figure that into the equation.
I can take care of this little problem. You add another box to the bottom of your form and then you check it. Then send me your fucking Kinko’s bill.
Yes, I’m that generous.

Just cuz.

Oh ya, Leahy!

We gotcher volunteers lined up from coast to coast.

I would say that an openly anti-choice Supreme Court Justice is a big enough deal that any pro-choice org should be totally mobilized and leaning on every single senator who supports them and vice versa. And a betrayal on this is something that should not require, nor be reduced to, an entry in a scorecard like it’s just an average run-of-the-mill vote.
The “scorecard” excuse is either transparent BS, or NARAL and PP have their eyes so far off the ball that it’s now lodged in their colon.
Below is a very good point. A great point. Anyone know of a scorecard organization that does take that stuff into account. I haven’t found one yet. But it can’t be THAT hard, can it? Seriously, anyone know of group that takes the strategic vote BS into account?
“When I explained that Lieberman’s REAL vote on Alito was the vote for cloture, she claimed that there wasn’t any way to figure that into the equation”
honestly, they act like they make these ratings out using stone tablets and burnt sticks. it can’t be that hard for them to revise their “scorecard” to reflect some of the less obvious variables. it’s just another case of once vital groups becomeing mired in their own institutionality.
You add another box to the bottom of your form and then you check it

hmmm…. do you really want bill’s fucking kinkos? Oh, wait, he didn’t have sex with that woman….

If you can’t keep track of a SCOTUS vote without a frickin’ scorecard, you’re not even close to fulfilling your mission.
Senator Statesman Leahy!
Kinko’s Friedman
One of the more depressing things I’ve witnessed recently was Boxer touting Joe’s pro choice creds. Naturally she cited the NARAL and PP endorsements.
What Kos wrote in Crashing the Gate about single interest groups was so right on. Basically, they suck and they hurt progressives. Time for them to fade away.
I’m not sure what to make of it when I check in at FDL and commenters are talking about how cute I am.
Well, I take it as a compliment–but my girlfriend perceives you all as threats. “known admirers” or something.
And my last comment totally should have a big ;) with it, in case it isn’t clear.
punaise! *giggling madly*
So they put Free Space under Joe Lieberman?
Are the local NARAL and Planned Parenthood chapters constrained from giving endorsements that are contrary to what the national office has issued?
I still think it would be powerful to have an ad that features groups of people, each wearing an item of clothing, a hat or something that identifies them as being part of an organization, and having one person from each group saying something to the effect that they are members of X organization, have supported it for years, but that they respectfully disagree with the national office’s endorsement, and then say why. Could be folks from NARAL, Planned Parenthood, local unions, environmental groups, etc.
Just seems like the national offices are completely out of touch on this one, and it would be nice to counter the impression that Joe is the champion of these issues, when clearly lots of folks disagree.
What Kos wrote in Crashing the Gate about single interest groups was so right on. Basically, they suck and they hurt progressives. Time for them to fade away.
I just don’t understand how single issue groups can blow off their own single issue. If you’re a pro-choice group that doesn’t care about a cloture vote on Alito, what *do* you care about? I’m guessing money and access and not much else.
Well, I take it as a compliment–but my girlfriend perceives you all as threats. “known admirers” or something.
She’s started her own blog: myspaze.com.
everybody at FDL is cute, spazeboy.
just have your girlfriend dip her toe in and she shall see it’s very innocent and incredibly earnest.
spazeboy – the price of celebrity – you have dyke stalkers :)
sherocket…so, about you in that Babarella swimsuit….. :~)
Can someone tell me why these stupid groups can not endorse more than one candidate, if both meet their requirements?
boing!
I know it’s all in good fun, I’ve noticed several comments on cuteness of myself and other FDLers…usually after someone else brings my name up though. :)
Spazeboy: Fire Stalk Lake
If you need a scorecard at all, just call the whole day off.
I think my boyfriend has dibs on that . . .so, don’t get saucy with me, punaise! :]
about time somebody brought Barbarella in here
well then, spazeboy, you are the designated line leader now!
She’s started her own blog: myspaze.com.
Classic Eli.
sherocket – strictly a rhetorical question, of course!
spazeboy- yeah, it’s hard. Matt O. has had the same sexist treatment, ya’ know, those paying attention to his brawn and not his brain… honestly, some people! (p.s. I think you are cute).
you have dyke stalkers
Like the hat Sherlock Holmes wore?
Cool!
Little Richard!
Just because.
Sharkbabe — you do know that when Jane was making Barbarella, she was quite into woman-with-woman action ?
These scorecards are the All-Access Pass for the incumbents at national organizations in DeeCee who write them to protect members of their favorite party, the Incumbency Festival.
PAC for A Change cites these scorecards to justify Senator Boxer’s lack of daylight between her and Senator Lieberman on choice and gay rights.
The scorecards won’t change until the players do. And a Lieberman loss in August will unhinge these scorecard-keeping Incumbency Festival wienie-lovers. Watch for more scorecard-waving Connecticut
— and hang on to your Kinko’s cash, Jane. Ain’t gonna be any new questions pencilled in anytime soon.

Also, power, ego – the feeling of being influential, and survival of the group, even long after its lost its reason for being or the ability to do much good.
sharkie…utter luck…I’ll be updating comments and glance at the clock and think “refresh” and suddenly there’s an opening…..and then my otherwise dormant competitiveness kicks in……
FDL makes me laugh so much sometimes, and just when I need it. God bless this community.
so there’s this woman who’s convinced she’s a fake lesbian…she goes to the doctor, who performs a false dyke-otomy
Anyway y’all, I’m going to go catch up on Daily Show and Colbert from the past couple days. I took the night off because the only Dem. event this evening was a spaghetti dinner in town. I know it’s a DTC fundraiser, but $40 for Amy and I is a bit steep for noodles and sauce.
(I probably could have eaten for free, I’m beloved in my new hometown too)
Help me rack up some views at this great YouTube of a New Britain State Rep using his limited time at today’s candidate forum to stump for Lamont.
Like a typical Lamont supporter, he’s an angry lunatic. :)
Talking Matt O, now you’re in youngster God country. Fucker’s gonna save the world, while taking a nap.
I would like to be in Anne 24’s ad, with a California Constituent of Barbara Boxer t-shirt.
I am stuck at work, so I am glad everybody has brought the funny this evening.
*also giggling at SteveNS*
Maybe we can all wrestle Spazeboy’s girlfriend and settle this like civilized folk! :)
Right on Old Sow! I’m so tired I’m only here for a blink.
Spazeboy – I could send her my picture and then she when KNOW I am not a threat, even if I do think you are cute. My response to ‘cuteness’ is to bake you cookies.
a while back in Late Nite we were conjuring future camapign slogans for Matt O. One that seemed to stick was:
“Ought O. Mattic for the People“
*ilson 43 – no idea! then again why should I be surprised – Vadim just like all straight guys…
Eli #16: well you don’t need no scorecard, and I don’t either. But many do. And an SCOTUS scorecard would be as bogus -it would forget the cloture vote and record the meaningless vote to approve.
she claimed that there wasn’t any way to figure that into the equation.
Here’s the problem with this logic: It’s not an equation. It’s a set of arbitrary choices given pass/fail criteria and then averaged. There’s no equation they use to decide which votes are important and which aren’t. They could just as easily decide that the Telecom bill or the McCain amendment were important women’s issues.
punaise- was Matt O there, or were y’all just talking behind his back?
*, your 43 sat me back, and then I realized you meant Jane Fonda.
those lil innocuous scorecards get used for momentous decisions like where to throw organizational resources like cash and volunteers …
*, your 43 sat me back, and then I realized you meant Jane Fonda.
TeddySanFran – LOL, so did I. And then I thought, wait… Barbarella, Jane’s too young. And then I thought, wait… was there a remake?
And then I just got tired and gave up.
In case anyone wasn’t awake last night at 3am est or midnight on the left coast, I finally fessed up that my daughter married a woman. I was raised to be traditional about such things, it was not so easy, but I made the leap.
They were either the first, or among the very first, to insist that the Washington Post say in the article, that they were “married.” A kind editor put their picture at the top of the page in Celebrations. My daughter initially asked to be included in Weddings but compromised.
They have a Quaker certificate of marriage, many years ago Quaker marriages were not recognized as legitimate in some states, but there had to be some proof people were married. The ceremony was in a Unitarian church with 200 happy family and friends to witness. My family alone filled up 7 pews.
I have always been scornful of parents who refused to attend their child’s wedding. So I decided that she makes her own choices, which means I raised her well! And that I should be there with bells on my toes.
The 6 yr old flower girl, from a very red state indeed, was defending this marriage to her friends. “Two brides, two grooms, a bride and a groom, who cares, as long as they love each other?”
Teddy — I deliberately left that ‘Jane’ reference oblique to pique the interest of the prurient …
Eli #16: well you don’t need no scorecard, and I don’t either. But many do. And an SCOTUS scorecard would be as bogus -it would forget the cloture vote and record the meaningless vote to approve.
I think you might be missing my point. If you’re a single-issue, pro-choice organization, Alito looms much much larger in your field of view than any check box on a scorecard. You should *know* exactly how Joe voted on Alito, you should *know* what cloture means, and you should *know* that Joe betrayed you bigtime and then tried to game the system by casting a meaningless vote “against” Alito.
Congratulaions, egregious!
egregious – hearts to you.
Seems to me that if they were really interested in supporting their proclaimed “issue”, really truly, they’d be a bit more discerning and more widely read… and figure out who was best to support based on that, and make up the scorecards accordingly… I mean, are they stupid?
Congrats, egreg!
Teddy, I would be proud to have you in any ad – you could be the star/spokesperson of the “Barbara Boxer doesn’t speak for me” group, which I suspect has grown considerably over the last few weeks..
Now, if only I were actually in the ad biz, and not slaving away administering the estates and trusts of the dysfunctional rich…honestly, some days I feel like I’m doing field work for a masters in psychology…*g*
Tim O’Brien!
Thanks, spazeboy.
M 68, they should be saying, “F*ck the scorecard – he just voted in a total anti-choice bastard to a lifetime appointment on a Supreme Court that’s teetering on the brink.”
I have to say I am finding it very difficult to condemn Boxer in total for her travels to Conn. Though I wish she had elected to at least stay out of the Lamont quest to properly represent the people of Connecticut and to help reflect the wish of Americans to get out of Iraq. Her overall record is something she can be very proud of. My first reaction to Senator Boxer’s support for Lieberman skirted outrage. But other than this issue, I cannot recall a disagreement with Senator Boxer on anything. I think she has made a mistake in deciding to come to Connecticut, but I will, I think, let it pass, and see what happens. She has fought the good fight against Bush. I cannot say the same for Billary, Inc.
Gun nut
Fuck you.
Get you’re ass out of here
Really the NARAL and PP stuff in this particular campaign is especially shocking and revealing – the corruption of our whole society, even the putative side of the angels, is just so total – we appalled pissed off rabble, man do we have our work cut out for us – go NED
This whole scorecard thing just has me asking myself:
1. Are they really so dumb they can’t figure out how to incorporate complex data into their scoring? If yes, don’t give dumb people your money.
2. Are they just supporting the Incumbentocracy, and gaming the cards to ignore data that makes the incumbent look bad? If yes, don’t give cheating incumbent-supporters your money.
3. Are they just in the pro-choice camp for the money instead of the issue…and if the issue goes away, they lose their money…so they deliberately toss enough good candidates to keep Choice always at risk? If yes, don’t give your money to duplicitous scamming pseudo-pro-choice wannabes.
I can’t see any good reason to give these people any money. Just click on an appropriate link on the Act Blue page and donate to a Progressive candidate instead, if you are in a giving mood!
Since we’re talking paper, has there been any sight of Lieberman’s “Kiss My Ring” petitions? I’ve heard rumors they’re being circulated at private functions, but that doesn’t seem like it’d gather enough.
congratulations egregious!
I forget her name, but she was very firm in her support of their decision to endorse Joe Lieberman.
I wrote a note to NARAL, got a reply, sent them back a reply, and received a 2nd reply all within two days, from “Elizabeth Shipp, Political Director”.
She very politely informed me that Lieberman had “clarified” his rape-walk position to their satisfaction. In my reply I asked just what that position was and she responded with an encouragement for me to contact Lieberman’s office directly “for more information about Senator Lieberman‘s position on emergency contraception for sexual assault survivors, or any other choice-related issues”
Nice.
Eli:
‘ZACTLY.

if you refresh your page with F5, you will have completed the erasure of ‘gun nut’ …
M (VG!)
punaise- was Matt O there, or were y’all just talking behind his back?
as I recall, he caught up with the thread in real time and humbly endorsed the slogan I mentioned, and not just because he likes REM.
John Casper at 6:37pm, I couldn’t have said it better myself!
Thank you *ilson.
I missed the ‘gun nut’ comment, but I would be interested in whether the NRA would be so forgiving of a moderate Republican who voted for cloture on an openly anti-gun SCOTUS nominee.
OT, but talking about stalkers gives me an in and I need you guys.
for the last two years I’ve been getting ocassional calls from my old high school boyfriend whom I haven’t seen in almost 25 years. He lives in South Carolina. We chat, he gets maudlin, I say bye and don’t hear from him for a while. I finally got caller ID on accounta a few week period when my phone rang every hour after I didn’t call him back when I said I would. After the first few times I stopped answering.
Today I got a call with a local phone number on caller ID. It was him. I asked him how come it showed a local exchange and he sleazed it off but he’s a lawyer and good at redirection. He went on and on about phone company mergers and BAby Bell breakups but wouldn’t the logical answer have been “Oh, it does? I don’t know. Weird.”
I did a low level reverse phone search and the number is a land line in my town, in CA, not SC. When I call the number I get a recording that all circuits are busy, call later – every time I call, even when other exchanges in town work fine. Can he possibly be here?
I’m a little spooked. He’s been violent before, in college. Does anyone know: a)do companies offer a service that will mask your real phone number for caller ID, allowing you to enter any number you wish? b) a way to get more information about the phone number without paying $15 to an online service? My search on google turns up conflicting information. One company says further details about the number are unavailable, another promises name and address, guaranteed. c) does caller ID often screw up and show the wrong phone number? I frequently see this number on the missed calls log but never a message. d) should I be worried?
So sorry to hijack the Ned but I need you guys. Daddybrain is at guitar jamming/lessons. I think I’m overreacting. Do you? Please?
Mary,
I’m not smart enough to be a lawyer, I’m just a typing monkey :) but you said something about not being sure if you can post the url to that speech earlier.
I’m not smart enough to interpret this but I think it falls under the Fair Use Doctrine
Gotta run
Hi/bye
Thanks *ilson.
Congratulations egregious.
*ilson- geezx, youda thunk by now that people would just ignore those kinda comments. I mean, the moderators will remove them, as time allows, so why bother????
punaise says: “…she goes to the doctor…”

And if the doctor is practicing with another physician, they’re a paradox – right?
A bit OT, but where’s the link to FDL’s ActBlue page? Looks like Ned could use some scratch to counter all this Clinton bad business that’s hitting the airwaves.
I looked all over the site, but either I missed it or it’s not there. If it’s not there, it would be a nice touch…
bobo
PS Can someone tell me, do Bill & Joe really kiss in the ads?
And if the doctor is practicing with another physician, they’re a paradox – right?
If they add another one, does that make them a doctrinaire?
Re pro-choice groups being on the wrong side here, when it matters so much:
There is a whole body of management literature on the life cycle of nonprofit organizations. [I was certainly in the minority at my well-known eastern business school, focusing on nonprofits.] They start off with a burst of energy, some achieve wonderful things, then a time of challenge, if they survive that, the danger is settling into mediocrity.
My own children’s medical charity is now 10 years old (woohoo!) and we are past the time of challenge, and boldly slashing away at being mediocre: never. When children’s lives are at stake, one cannot rest.
If you want to see what we are doing in the former Soviet Union, the link at my name goes to my website, then look on the right for the button “Working for Peace.” Just under “The Mothership: firedoglake” :) :)
Mommybrain – From what I understand and my own ongoing ex-boyfriend issue (if you have a few hours sometime I’ll do the whole song and dance) – anything like that is possible with the phone, but basically, if it is occurring to you that you might be frightened, then you are frightened. It is better to overreact than not to take precautions. More in a sec -
egregious – congratulations and all best wishes to you and your daughter and her partner.
All we ever really want for our children is for them to be happy, to love and to be loved. The deep love you have for your daughter has always come shining through in every comment you have ever posted about her; she no doubt fell in love with someone who embodies all the love she experienced in your family.
Much happiness and hugs to all of you!
Mommybrain- my 2$- (inflation)- I would be cautious at least, and probably worried. Maybe I am placing too much faith in the local PD, but have you thought about reporting this to them?
wesqpc: am glad to know you are anon1. A few days ago, when another anon took a handle, I wondered where you had gone.

If they practiced ~ 10 miles NE of me, they’d be the Anaheim Docs.
Mommybrain – call the phone company and see what their advice is… pacbell here in SoCal was pretty good when my old mother was getting some wacky calls from weirdos…
Another good one Spazeboy! It IS exciting observing how much impact the blogs are having on the world stage. It is no wonder big business wants to regulate and bill us into oblivion. Too bad their nefarious plans are going to be ultimately defeated!
Lots of the “little people” are waking up to the realization they can develop unlimited power in cyberspace where new superheros are born every minute! Truth, justice, and the (true) American Way!
mommybrain – take care
If they practiced ~ 10 miles NE of me, they’d be the Anaheim Docs.
Well, they might be.
the phone call was made from an entity with a large number of phone lines in a “hunt group” or a “pool” — only the main listed number will answer. The other numbers are “out-going” only.
You add another box to the bottom of your form and then you check it.
That is actually not right. The box should REPLACE the Alito vote. So you need some whiteout here. No need to even recognize the Alito vote as meaningful.
The spokes person for planned parenthood probably brought up the “score card” thing to kill time or play the Jedi mind fuck on callers (these aren’t the droids your looking for).
For some reason they decided to endorse the ass and can’t give a reson why.
Boxer couldn’t explain herself either.
I think Jane want’s answers not a fucking bill.
Sitting here at a coffee house in Fremont (district of Seattle) with shoephone, RGB, sondra and Peter Bevis. shoephone and RGB are giving me a tutorial on stateroots. Cool interface. RGB described it ro sondra as a cross between kos and myspace. OK….

Really poignant comment on last thread, last post, by Leisler NYC at 322. re: Hill & Bill.
egregious: Congratulations. You raised a brave daughter! I am sorry that we still live in a world where she would have to demand fair treatment.
Mommybrain -
on the one hand, he may be going to creepy lengths to conceal his phonecalls (my ex has tried similar things). That is lame and cause for caution, but it also means that he is not physically near you (my ex is probably never going to come near me, preferring to try to mess with my head from a distance).
on the other hand, he MIGHT (unlikely) be in your area and considering visiting you.
I have changed my phone number once, am in the midst of changing it again, and changed my email handles twice over the past four or five months. If you haven’t already decided this – any contact or response is encouragement. You might consider getting a new phone number, but leaving the old one hooked to an answering machine (so he won’t know) that Daddybrain can monitor for danger signs.
Read the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin deBecker.
Few other close friends of Joe Lieberman are better positioned to talk him out of his Indy run on August Ninth than Senator Barbara Boxer. I think she has a date with destiny.
While I’m disappointed in her choice to campaign for her friend, I am comforted to know that her loyalty to Joe is mutual — and that he will listen to her wise counsel about challenging the nominee of the Democratic Party in Connecticut, chosen by primary voters.
I’ve forgiven Senator Boxer her trip, for I feel it was promised pre-primary. She kept her commitment to her friend, and Joe will have to hear her out: “No indy run, Joe.”

Hey shoephone! Christy used your pic in an earlier thread. Agent 86.
Scorecards. Bueauracratic webs are such a handy shield to hide behind, aren’t they? and PP and NARAL and Sierra Club are just that.
John Casper at 6:37 pm
LMAO!
Mommybrain, I definitely don’t think you’re overreacting. If you’re scared, that’s what matters.
I’m just offering options here.
What I would invite you to consider is some written, date stamped communication (not regular mail, has to be certified imo or a fax or an email) making it clear that you don’t want any more contact of any kind, at all, ever again. If that doesn’t work, then I guess you go to the restraining order.
Others may say go directly to restraining order, do not pass go. I have no problem with that, but obviously that’s your decision.
Thanks, M, and yes it should – bobo
*ilson, would an outfit in SCarolina make outgoing calls from a number with my local area code?
OK Kiddo, I’m regrettably at the other end of the spectrum on Boxer. I don’t see her support of RG Joe as trivial, even when put in perspective of her past accomplishments. Her recent attitude and lack of judgment about what Joe actually represents is completely repugnant to me. The whole Sir Gallahad thing just put me over the edge. I don’t see that as advancing women in any way, shape or form. And to support someone who supports the war in Iraq the way that Joe does is a litmus test for me that I cannot in all conscience overlook. For her to try and pass it off as “oh, yeah, Joe and I have our disagreements” – I find that insulting. I know there must be women out there who would never treat democrats who have honest and legitimate questions like she did in that video. She was condescending and dismissive beyond belief and she twisted the facts. I thought that was infantilizing and it has no place in political life. She now strikes me as totally old guard and out of touch with those that need her most. I’m not the least happy about this. I’m rather saddened by it. Really saddened.
I am a jerk who posts deliberately hurtful and insulting comments.
Osama bin Laden is the bravest, gentlest, warmest, most wonderful human being I have ever met in my life!
Teddy @112:
If your assessment is correct, then Boxer’s support for Joe in the primary is not quite so reprehensible. But her response to Maura has permanently cost her a lot of credibility and respect in my eyes.
mommybrain -
I forgot who wrote the book, but there is one about “Fear” and how it is important to heed your instincts and not ignore. Oh, Darrin somebody is the author, I think. Or Gavin. Something like that. It got good reviews.
mommybrain at 87;
very similar thing happened to me on Monday, my agent has a ‘registered’ number and calls from LA. Suddenly, his call showed up as a NYC number and when I called back, I got the same ‘all circuits are busy’ recording… My agent doesn’t have a NY number…
It seems to me it’s a glitch in teh system and not a deliberate ‘cover up’…
Anyway, you should be prudent and it’s good you asked other people.
I hope this helps you…
I’m convinced more than ever that Lieberman has lied repeatedly to Boxer (and PP and NARAL), claiming he never made the rape victim comment. That’s the best thing that would explain Boxer’s crude attempts to respond to Maura’s question on Monday. And since Joe’s a friend of hers, I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s unable to accept what a lying sack of crap he is. He did approve the fake Lamont bumpersticker ad, after all.
nope — the call was made from a local number, not from a foreign area code. if callerID didnt display the foreign area code but the local areacode, its local. Of course, with Vonage etc you can select whatever areacode you wish but thats weird.
I don’t necessarily recommend restraining order, but definite “do not contact me” language is in order if you have not previously given it. Generally tho, any response to him will be considered communication from you by him and encourage continued communication. My previous post was nearly incoherent – I was typing too fast. But do check out that book, it gives excellent advice for these kinds of situations.
I did have to wonder why Sir Galahad didn’t rescue Senator Boxer from those questioners, CTBob and Maura. It seemed to me that she was caught quite off-guard, for which I fault Bob and Maura not at all.
No, her host let her down, by not preparing my Senator for her visit to Connecticut. The entire episode reflects poorly on RGJoe alone.
Oh, this is the book I was thinking about!
mommybrain – you can block certain numbers, as well as any number that would come up “unknown.” While you can certainly change your number – what a pain that is, though – I guess what would worry me is the reverse look-up that might have given him your address. Maybe next time he calls, you could – as calmly and rationally as you can – tell him that his calls make you uncomfortable, that you do not wish to hear from him again, and that you will not hesitate to take the appropriate action if he persists. I would end by telling him that you wish him no ill will, but that your relationship is best left in the past, and that you are hanging up the phone now.
Oh man, all the scorecards I looked at are so 100% bogus. I used Lieberman’s final vote on Bankruptcy Bill as a test. I had high hopes for National Journal’s Key Votes. It advertises itself as dong special magic stuff to make their scores better. So, get this, it picks out floor votes with a high profile. So of course, that means that a Senator just goes through more high jinks so the high profile vote looks good. What do you see on Key Votes? Joe votes a (big bogus) NO on bankruptcy.
But, Eli was right. Some of this is so simple, if the groups wanted to they could do it right. Or make a blurb explaining why the vote score is BS.
Problem is, this stuff looks all scientifical to low info voter. Oh well, another scam exposed on FDL. Sombody oughta do something about it. Wish I knew what.
folk — hit F5 again and you’ll notice Gun Nut has changed his tune !
Mommybrain – We have intuition for a reason. Always, always, always follow your gut in these kinds of situations. Your physical body is trying to tell you something and you should listen. No need to apologize for reacting to bizarre behavior, and this is clearly not normal behaviour. Do everything you can think of to make sure you are safe.
To Jane, Christy, T-Rex and the rest, thanks for making my last stop on the blogs, fun. Looking forward to coffee with Christy on Saturday. Thanks
*ilson- I think the request for a FDL link to the combined Act Blue page (bb above) is important- can you add this to the page? Or, can you get Jane to add this to the main FDL page?
Thanks everyone for the advice. I feel better having some options with which to make a plan. John Casper, I hope it doesn’t come to that but if it does I will make the personal contact first. It isn’t to the level of stalking yet, just discomfort. And why, after 25 years, is he doing this?
I look forward to talking to my big strong mayun tonight.
Problem is, this stuff looks all scientifical to low info voter. Oh well, another scam exposed on FDL. Sombody oughta do something about it. Wish I knew what.
Just the fact that they’re trying to snow their own members is very disturbing.
stalking – geez, some guys can be such jerks
Jane, have you had a chance to talk to Susan Yelon yet? I’m curious about the PR person’s response.
*ilson made a funny! bwahahaha!
Jane/Christy should do the link-adding I believe … I just delete real good!
mommybrain – I am leaving work and will be home in a bit – please email me if you like
[my nickname here] at gmail.com
I have been dealing with this for a while now, so if you would like more info on some of the psychological issues, that is no problem.
Hello from Donegan, PA! Today was a long week.
Jane/Christy should do the link-adding I believe … I just delete real good!
Would it help if I repeated the request and threw in some withering skepticism about their commitment to the progressive cause? I’ve noticed that they both respond to that really positively.
*runs away*
TSF @ 112
I’ve forgiven Senator Boxer her trip, for I feel it was promised pre-primary
How could it have been?? How can she promise something that did not even exist before Ned got 33% at the state convention a few weeks back? This has been arranged deliberately to derail Lamont.
Ed*ard Teller:
Lucky you. Make that lucky all of you. A motley crew that I’d gladly join. And shoephone’s appearance was/is truly stunning!
—-
*ilson – quite.
I would be a stalker, but nobody can keep up.
NSA folk — although Gun Nut is being an obnoxious asshole, please do not put him on a terrorist list coz of his Osama comment. I was Trexxing him …
*ilson- okay- CHS usually says she doesn’t do most of the tech stuff, Jane does. So maybe you can give Jane a big “heads up” asap… it would be a shame if giving $$$ to Ned or others on the page wasn’t as easy as possible, net-wise. Please?
Today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on FISA, featuring CIA Director Michael Hayden, Bradbury of the DoJ, and the new NSA director, is due to be replayed starting at 10:27 p.m. ET tonight, on C-SPAN 2. Streaming on-line here with RealPlayer:
http://c-span.org/watch/cspan2…..p;Code=CS2
And right now, Alberto Gonzales on Washington Journal from this morning is being replayed (GAH – just heard him declare that ‘the Fourth Amendment does not require a warrant – it just requires that the search be reasonable’). A great question from FDL’s angie is included in the questions asked of Gonzales.
Shit shit shit shit.
Fucking motherfuckers.

ember #98: gwarsh ember… didn’t think people notices. Shucks. I never thought I would ever be a regular at any old wild angry lefty blog tearing civilization apart limb from limb. So I was anon, then anon_1. Regulars badgered me into a name. I was very naive about the world of blogging and political operatives and trolling and such like and didn’t realize how suspicious and anti-social anon was as a name.
I dunno, if these lefty blogs are so unimportant, why do the reactionaries spend so much attention to sending political operatives to cause trouble? If I hadn’t seen that kind of nonsense with my own two eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.
egregious’ story about her daughter and the Russian medical foundation is very inspiring, I think.
Hi, Oilfieldguy. Hope you’re resting up for the morrow.
mommybrain, go to the cops. I had a worse situation; sheriff was great. Called the guy, the guy’s father, read both the riot act, scared the crap out of both, and I never heard from him again. This was 4 years ago.
egreg – oh man
could I sit down beside you and talk some stuff – my parents have been you – however unlike your thoughtful self, big fat Limbaugh wingers – and they stepped up for me bigtime – because I squarely faced them and asked them to – whole point of that now-defunct r’ship/wedding was me and parents honestly facing each other
supposed wingnut dad especially there with bells on
miss you dad
Shit shit shit shit.
Fucking motherfuckers.
14 Democrats. WTF???
oilfieldgy: can you put a map on your blog? Real time GPS it so the trolls can sit and watch the purple line crawling along the highways and byways.
and mommybrain 137, yes, it is stalking, take it bery seriously.
bery bery seriously.
Hopefully coffee with Reddhedd tomorrow.
And hello to the divine Ms. M.
OT, except that everything these people are doing is related…it’s all criminal. Anyway, Elouise Cobell on McCain’s $8bn figure. They’re trying real hard to bilk the tribes, methinks.
Mommybrain,
Have only read half of your comment.
Fear: totally justified.
Change your phone number TODAY.
meta…121
I certainly understand what you’re saying. And when I read your item on this it brings out the outrage in me again. But I lived in her district for so many years, and she always seemed to do the right thing. No question for me that she made a mistake, and perhaps I’m making a mistake in not condemning her completely, based upon this Lieberman fiasco. It most surely won’t be the last mistake I make. Perhaps we will just have to as they say, agree to disagree on this. I just don’t know why this otherwise good Democratic Senator chose to come to the aid of such a rascal as is Lieberman. I have to say most respectfully, I am just not at this point prepared to throw the baby out with the bath water. As always though, my views can be subject to change. As for Lamont, I think it absolutely crucial that he defeat Lieberman. And I think he will.
egregious, congratulations on your new daughter-in-law, and every happiness to the newlyweds.
Presidential candidate Evan Bayh was one of the 14 ‘Democrats’ who voted with the GOP on that anti-abortion bill. He also voted FOR the Iraq War (but said he was mislead). He just blew his Presidential dreams bigtime!
14 Democrats. WTF???
S.403:
Bayh (D-IN)
Byrd (D-WV)
Carper (D-DE)
Conrad (D-ND)
Dorgan (D-ND)
Inouye (D-HI)
Johnson (D-SD)
Kohl (D-WI)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Reid (D-NV)
Salazar (D-CO)
wesgpc’s votinglinks,
Johnny Law might throw a big ol’ net over me if he knew where I wuz at in real time. I am bonafide oilfieldtrash–where we are inlaws or outlaws, sometimes both.
I absolute give up on the democrats. The point of our retaking congress this fall is, um what?
I am beyond sickened at their israel uber alles HORSESHIT today.
Who the HELL is going to save this country?
“And why, after 25 years, is he doing this?”
IMHO, that’s his job to figure out. You didn’t do anything to cause this.
FWIW, he may interpret any kindness you show him as “interest.”
More FWIW, he clearly is going to a lot of work to find you. That’s a problem imo. It’s inherently dangerous.
Damn. I think Byrd is losing it.
Thanks, JWR. I just saw a list of bankruptcy bill yeas earlier today, and I think every single one of them was on it. Wankers.
mommybrain -
One more thing. I read somplace you’re not supposed to respond, even negatively, to a stalker. Any response is encouragement. Good luck
Haven’t finished the comments and hope that this is redundant, but I just want to say this about the “scorecard” problem:
1) Vote on cloture to end Alito filibuster
Yes_______ (score: 0%)
No_______ (score: 100%)
Total Score*_________
*Must equal either 0% or 100%
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-WH): Total score 0%
That’s all you need. It’s that important.
Damn. I think Byrd is losing it.
I think Byrd is pretty conservative for a Dem, but he knows a bogus, destructive war when he sees one.
Mommybrain
Can you tell him not to contact you any more because Mr. Mommybrain doesn’t like it?
That is more of a face-saving way for him to hear it and it might calm down any craziness.
… and now you know why we call them Vichy Democrats
Score cards are essentially useless. As the Alito case shows, there can be more than one vote on an issue and one of those may be more important than another. Lawmakers can cast a free vote on an amendment that they know is going down to defeat or they can vote for the amendment but against the bill or say for the bill as it passes their chamber but against its final reconciled version. But, of course, it goes further since they can also vote one way in committee and another way when the measure reaches the floor. Kerry’s I voted for it before I voted against it is really rather common and demonstrates the futility of simple minded scoring. OTOH to weight all these votes systematicallty would be also be pointless. A pragmatic approach based on the crucial votes would be most worthwhile but would need more critical analysis than most of public service organizations are willing to spend on them.
Mommybrain – Not my area of the law, but I would call a lawyer in your area with expertise in family law (California Bar recognizes that as a certified specialty) and ask about restraining order. Might not not do any good, but as we say, can’t hurt.
p.s. Mommybrain- and don’t try to “reason” with him.
Gun Nut 122
This isn’t the Democratic party. This is FDL.
I went 160 miles today, and it took all day. Two flat tires and a busted driveshaft. My PA state approved route sucks ass. Skinny ass roads and straight up and down. I want them cranes to get this heavy sumbitch off’n me in the am so I can go have coffee with Christy.
re: I think Byrd is losing it
time to view a classic:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=R3G…..earch=coot off
At a business leader gathering on Wednesday in Florida, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean called al-Maliki an “anti-Semite,” according to the Associated Press.
“The Iraqi prime minister is an anti-Semite,” said Dean.
So what do you think, are the Dems engaging in some grand strategery to piss of the Iraqis so much that they order us out of Iraq? Or are they just idiots?
I loved the coot off. But I think the “tubes” soliloquy puts Stevens unquestionably over the top.
Looking over the list of dems who voted for this, it seems they voted consistent with their stated positions on abortion.
The sad part of this vote isn’t the disagreement, but the lack of reasoning and understanding these senators are exhibiting by supporting this. This vote reveals how many still think abortion is some sort of toss-away activity that women and girls don’t agonize over before seeking. And they also apparently don’t believe girls are abused by their fathers.
Mommybrain, do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not deal with this guy yourself anymore. All “extreme” suggestions above are appropriate. All mild ones are not.
OK Kiddo, thanks for your thoughtful response. I’m not trying to change anybody’s mind so I hope you didn’t feel put on the spot. Just expressing my extreme disappointment on something that has left me rattled. I completely respect everyone here and appreciate the free forum and exchange of ideas and perspectives. I can definitely be wrong about things, but this is gut level for me.
From the WaPo 14 Dems:
Evan Bayh, Robert Byrd, Thomas Carper, Kent Conrad, Byron Dorgan, Daniel Inouye, Tim Johnson, Herb Kohl, Mary Landrieu, Bill Nelson, Ben Nelson, Mark Pryor, Harry Reid, Kenneth Salazar
et ton petit chien aussi — refresh your page with F5 and you’ll discover #122 has a better attitude …
Teddy 129
A real Galahad would never have roped Boxer into such an uncomfortable role.
What a selfish pest he is.
Mommybrain,
You need to contact the police NOW. Let them know the details of what is happening.
The fact that this guy has moved to your town is ominous.
Take this very seriously.
Consider moving. I mean it. Never answer his phone calls ever again. Do you have small children? Are you vulnerable in any way?
This is sizing up to be a classic case of stalking, and if HE HAS ALREADY BEEN VIOLENT then HE WILL BE VIOLENT AGAIN.
I have some other ideas, resources, amidst packing for 2 weeks overseas, but bottom line is YES BE AFRAID. THIS IS THE REAL THING.
Keep us posted.
Shark, this has been an excruciating day for horrific news. I’m glad to see you here.
Mommybrain: 1) request to have your address removed from websites (such as peoplefinders); 2) have his # blocked; 3) put a victim alert on your phone; 4) document, document, document. and 5) if harrassment continues, make a police report.
Eli 185 – without a doubt
mommybrain, I used to work for the phone company. They take stalking pretty seriously. It is a criminal offense. And doing it on the phone is a federal offense. If there’s a technical explanation, they can check into it and give it to you, and ease your mind…or follow up if it does turn out to be serious.
I wonder how these words came out of my mouth??
I am such a blathering idiot !
Eli -
I’ve always loved Byrd to the depths of my soul. I’ll never forget during the Clarence Thomas hearing when he stood up and said fiercely: “I believe Anita Hill”. Chills down your spine moment.
I still love him for his courage and all the great things he’s done. But he has gone wobbly on several issues this past year or so. Makes me sad. I know he has a conservative constituency, but…
Well, maybe he’s really been voting his heart lately. Gee, you never know. Byrd and his little tattered copy of the constitution he’s always carrying in his pocket, well, it never fails to bring tears to my eyes when he gets all wobbly and his hand shakes and he pulls it out with a flourish, so righteously. I’ll always like him. I can’t help it.
I hope egregious tells us more about the Russian medical foundation. How does it work? Sounds like a few enterprizing people put something really effective, and on a shoestring. I hope egregious blogs about the details. (or maybe egregious has, but I don’t see it in the archives)
I wonder if something like this could be replicated.
http://www.russmed.com/index.html
rant alert/
I reject the whole notion of Boxer’s Sir Galahad nonsense! She is a full grown woman who can do her own homework and doesn’t need to be rescued by some fucking manipulator!
rant/off
I sorta like mommybrain, it disturbs me someone is pestering her. Maybe I could swing through her town, find this yahoo, and give him a cheaterpipe shampoo.
Jenny, I feel pretty much the same way about Byrd. He has made some truly eloquent stands on the side of good. But there are still a lot of things he’s disappointingly backward on.
IIRC, he not only voted for cloture on Alito, he actually voted *for* Alito, straight up (well, at least he didn’t try to have it both ways…).
mommybrain: I agree with others who say to go to authorities and listen carefully to what they say. History of violence. Dishonesty. Proximity. Three strikes. Don’t take chances.
Mommybrain: Gavin de Becker The Gift of Fear.
I’m off to amazon to get you a link.
You need to take this extremely seriously. I have THREE close women friends who have been the victims of violence. One is lucky even to be alive after what he did to her.
You are looking at classic symptoms. I DO mean to scare you. TAKE ACTION.
Mommybrain- egregious- glad to see that I wasn’t so far off base in suggesting that you contact the PD (police) (and I didn’t say, but also agree, the phone company). He also might be doing this to other women (or has done in the past) so there might be some info that you don’t know about, so far.
Btw mommybrain, 2 of the 3 are my sisters.
JHC, Oilfield Guy. Sounds like you’re reinventing the wheel! I hope you get to Christy in the am.
Now the news about Dean? Oh, Please! Stop.
never respond, mommybrain.
(still dealing with missing my cop ex and whole safety aspect of having firearm/professionalism in the house and cop car sitting out front…)
Eli, I know. He’s been putting my love to the test. :)
Darn. I remember *Inouye (D-HI)* as one of the good guys in the Senate Watergate hearings. I haven’t followed his career since at all. Too bad he’s on the wrong side of this issue.
George Bush is trying to make al-Maliki sound like the (spit!) Ronald Reagan of the MidEast. Maliki is so reactionary he wont shake Condi’s hand because shes a female. His Dawa Party is an ideological partner of Hezbollah. He would kill gays, given a chance and his own militias do!
I second Gavin de Becker recommendation, he is excellent
Here’s your link to amazon Gavin de Becker The Gift of Fear.
I want you to tell us of EVERY SINGLE CONTACT he makes from now on. This guy is dangerous and you are indeed in danger. Speaking from experience.
You need to change your phone number and make it a private number TOMORROW and call the police right away. This is the real thing. Don’t wait.
Gonzo on CSPAN/2 now…
weasled caller about why he’s basically ‘WH defense counsel” instead of people’s lawyer.

Not if HoJo has already campaigned for her in years past, or given her PAC money, and she promised she’d do the same for him if he ever needed it.
He would be calling in that chit now, and there’s no way she could admit that she’s doing it because she owes him.
She’d probably say she’s doing it because they’re old friends.
Oh, wait . . . .
old friends
old friends
sat on the park bench
like bookends.
sheez I want us all to go surround mommybrain’s house like in Witness and destroy this asshole
Senator Ensign 7/20/06 introducing the Child Protection Act:
“This is an important piece of legislation, especially for parents as many of these cases involve a 20-something-year-old male who has impregnated a young teenager, often a 13, 14, 15-year-old girl, which has ended in a secret abortion.
Now because your little girl had become pregnant and this 20-something-year-old realized that is a crime of statutory rape, they want to dispose of the evidence. So they decide to talk your little girl into going across State lines for an abortion because your State law requires parental notification or parental consent for such a procedure. They go to the State next door, take care of the abortion, and you, the parent, know nothing about it. How would you feel as a parent in a situation such as that?”
Not like this creep.
Oh, I see. The “Child Protection Act” is to *protect* underage girls from sexual predation.
Gotcha.
egregious- I’m not sure what the good is of mommybrain changing her phone number- he obviously already knows where she is. In fact, if the phone co. will monitor calls to her, then that (recorded) would be evidence. And/but I didn’t get all of the stuff about *ilson’s comments re: a pool of phone #s.
(It’s like they get all their bill and policy names from Bizarro World…)
Sharkbabe… 169
Sing it sistah… sing it. Whew! I like it.
GrandmaJ and I were reminiscing about the good old days when girls would have to go to Mexico for abortions. I feel the darkness coming back.
Senator Ensign sounds a bit like state senator Napoli from South Dakota, the one who fantasized out loud about the violation of a “religious girl”.
creeps of a feather….
Mommybrain,
This is worth the $15. Pay for the information.
TOMORROW call the phone company, change your number, make it unlisted, no referrals.
Call the police and tell them the story. They have heard it all before. It’s a very familiar story.
Please consider moving. Immediately. He has moved to be near you. He calls you hourly. HE HAS A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE. What more do you need?
GET AWAY FROM HIM NOW……
Keep us posted. I am truly worried for you.
Voice of experience here. Two battered sisters, one is lucky to be alive.
If Lieberman was not in hot water he would have voted with the fourteen Senators on this bill.
Pryor D-AR has got to go!
Since Inouye (D-HI) represents an island. Shouldn’t he abstain from such a vote?
well, if the parents had been good Christian parents, their daughter would know better and would never get pregnant so the point about predators is moot, isnt it?
Sorry, it was Anne Holliday, I think. Just want to keep things straight.
If Lieberman was not in hot water he would have voted with the fourteen Senators on this bill.
How long has this bill been on the radar? Maybe Boxer cut a deal?
Mommybrain
I am no expert, but I did spend a few years on the board of a women’s shelter. Take the advice above, such as OP99 @ 155 and egregious @ 192. Here’s some more. Assume he might be out to kill you. What kind of nutbag acts like this? Really. Change your number. Move if it gets alarming. Get an alarm system. Call the cops and report. Get your address off publicly available records such as voter registrations. Don’t answer the door if you aren’t expecting anyone. Don’t leave your door or your car unlocked. Take different routes to regular stops. Consider firearms. Stop answering your regular phone, or change the number and go unlisted. Call your local shelter and ask for advice. Google him and find out where he works/lives, etc. and give that info to the cops and several friends. Talk to a domestic relations lawyer. In short, believe that it’s serious.
‘night, all.
well, if the parents had been good Christian parents, their daughter would know better and would never get pregnant so the point about predators is moot, isnt it?
This is why it’s so important to teach your kids how not to have sex.
“If Lieberman was not in hot water he would have voted with the fourteen Senators on this bill.”
I agree, chalk that vote up to Ned.
I remember having to go from NYC, to standing in front of the Americana Hotel in Wasshington D.C. at night in a black trenchcoat with a white envelope ($500 in bills) and being blindfolded and driven to Besthesda MD for an abortion.
I think supporting Lieberman’s campaign was the price Boxer paid for his support in this bill.
Mommybrain – I know you are getting a bucket of advice here… but I’m telling you – start with the phone company – they deal with this stuff all the time and have lots of things they can set up for you… if you are West Coast, you might still reach them this evening…
it would be an excellent first step… when does Daddybrain get home?
Mommybrain
Please ignore my 176. My suggestion might work with a rational person, but I think you would better heed the voices of experience here, and forget my 2 cents.
I think supporting Lieberman’s campaign was the price Boxer paid for his support in this bill.
She got ripped off, IMHO.
Everytime I read through Senate votes one of the Dem AR Senators is on the wrong side (or both of them). Cancelling each other out or siding with Reps. Time after time the Reps win this way.
Why wasn’t my last comment approved?
OOOPS sorry It was. Very sorry.
Hi Fern!! Love your new moniker. It is so frondly.
“She got ripped off”
No argument there, Eli.
sandlin, it is approved instantly… hit F5 and refresh the entire page
M, and here I was thinking there could not possibly be one bad pun left!
mommybrain, also be aware that after all this time, this has nothing to do with you and your previous relationship. He has made it into something in his own mind; you are an object to him, not a person. Do not speak to him AT ALL, neither you nor your family. Any contact at all is a score for him.
sandlin and others, as the case may be. Sometimes comments trigger mod for unknown reasons. The moderators deal with comments in mod asap. Don’t stress the moderators. It is totally unfair, and counter-productive.
and I saw I spelled Bethesda incorrectly. I must have been nervous
with the memory
Yeah, Hawaii’s got no state lines, so what’s his beef?
sandlin, I am so sorry. We just returned to those times. So sorry.
I had a Great-Aunt Fern — her husbands name was Ferd (short for Fernandus) — a very nice couple — for real!
Meta – 121 and 200
Yoo Hoo – completely agree about Barbara Boxer and thank you for your comments. I don’t know or care if she is a stubborn little cuss’ – aren’t we all – nor do I believe for a moment that she wasn’t warned by her staff at her California and Washington offices. I know for a fact she had real options available for at least ten days in advance of her trip from concerned donors, friends and trusted staff. She did a little dodging but refused to waiver.
It has already proved costly to her here in state as her staff well knows and she’ll discover, sooner than later. It was a very painful, disquieting and disheartening drama for those of us who loved, trusted and championed her all these years.
meta 192 thanks what a nice thing to say
Also, when does Wisconsin get another chance with that Kohl person representing them?
His name seems to show up on a lot of these lists — is Wisconsin like California, with one Democratic Senator who organizes with the Democrats, as well as a Republican Senator who organizes with the Democrats?
I had an Aunt Fern by Moms second husband. Fernandus….wow
I always thought Fern was a southern name, for a person.
Also, when does Wisconsin get another chance with that Kohl person representing them?
I think he’s up for re-election this year, with not much competition from either side.
Anne- not to bring up sexist issues (but then, I am) but from now on I’m going to pay attention to the xx or xy of the “I forgive Boxer” vs the “I don’t like this one bit” comments. I kinda have a suspicion as to how this will break down. Just because. xx here, BTW.
I never knew anybody named Fern
But my favorite poem is Fern Hill.
Fern, who did you used to was?
I think Fern is a WASP old lady name. Like Lily and Prudence
I used to was jlr.
Not a Hillary fan but Clinton 7/25/06:
“The Child Custody Protection Act, while seeking to criminalize what a teenager does once she is pregnant, fails to address the issue of teen pregnancy in this country, the root of the problem.
To address only how teenagers should behave once they become pregnant without any resources on the front end to prevent a pregnancy is shortsighted, to say the least.
snip
I don’t think this debate should be about ideology. It should be about facts and evidence . We have to deal with the choices young people make, not just the choice we wish they would make. We should use all the resources at our disposal to ensure that teens are getting the information they need to make the right decision and that we remain a part of the solution by supporting programs and policies that deal with all the layers of this issue, not just a one size fits all approach.
Sadly, instead of putting resources into this important fight to prevent teen pregnancy, we are adding more penalties for those who try to help teens during their time of crisis.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fern_(letter)
I don’t like it one bit XY
Oh, Frn is a big improvement, lol
sandlin, I’m sorry for your experience. It must give you real heartache to watch what’s going on at this point in time.
M,
Hard to fit this round peg into a square hole. My first female boss was my boss for two weeks before I realized she was my first female boss.
Good point, OFG, about xx/xy. I did notice the gender breakdown on the list of Dems who voted yes on this bill.
Fern also the girl in Charlotte’s Web, transformed by Charlotte/Wilbur thing – not just best kid’s book ever, one of the greatest books ever period
(point being, Ferns rock)
sandlin, ditto what meta said at 8:00. Thanks for sharing it here.
There’s been a sea change in the attitude of the Boxer staffers towards her consituents on this, you can feel it when you contact the offices. She’s been counseled on this by the people who work for her, I imagine. Some of them may be very disheartened with her choice as well.
I really think her e-letter from the PAC for A Change is the beginning of the healing with the many of us who are angry and disillusioned, and not just the end as she might hope. There’s going to need to be more dialogue, and I hope Senator Boxer is prepared to put energy into it.
We need her now. Also, she needs us. Imagine becoming estranged from her longtime progressive supporters just as the swell of People-Powered Politics begins across the country!
Surely, Barbara Boxer will come back to us.
Eureka Springs- thanks, my first data point. I wasn’t predicting that it would break 100% on either side of the xx xy “divide”, BTW. Bec. there are a lot of really enlightened xys here.
I had a music teacher in Junior High named Fern. Very idiosyncratic lady, insisted we all call her by her first name. Had a nose ring…truly scandalous way back then hehe. She used to pretend she could speak French by saying things like “pencil-le-wah!”
Great music teacher too hehe.
Oops, looked at names crosswise – meant to respond to M on xx/xy.
I don’t like it one bit XY
Ditto, but if I were in CA, I would factor it into my scorecard, but wouldn’t necessarily vote against her in a primary.
Anne Holliday, thanks for your comment.
OFG,
Fern Hill is probably the most musical poem in English as well as being one of the deepest and most beautiful.
jlr aka Fern, It looks good on you.)
I am still catching up on this thread. A lot going on.
Mommybrain–I am concerned about your safety and hope you heed the advice from people with more experience in this kind of thing than I have.
Sharkbabe–I really like having you around. Seems like you were scarce for a while.
Now back to the thread.
Mommybrain-
I’m not a telco expert, but I do know that with new technology (specifically voice over Internet Protocol -VOIP) you can pick an area/country code anywhere in the country/world.
The main advantage is to avoid long distance charges, although nefarious motivations are possible indeed.
I’m in GA.
OFG, swing down here after your latte and we’ll grab some stuff out of my tool box for a little recon in South Carolina. Guess I’d have to learn what a cheaterpipe shampoo is, but I’d lobby for a couple of digital photographs to ease mommybrain’s mind.
Kurt, aren’t weird cool teachers the best – esp. music – how I love that handful of unforgettable teachers

I did not have martini with that woman.

He has a HISTORY OF VIOLENCE.
That’s all the data you need. Change your phone number tomorrow. Call the police and get them up to speed. Seriously, and I mean even if it costs you jobs/careers/money, move away NOW. You are in DANGER. Voice of experience.

Oh, and I meant to say, congratulations, egregious and please give your daughter and her spouse my best wishes.
. . . and your little dog, too @ 215
I understand that we all would love to give BB the benefit of the doubt, but it gets us nowhere. BB has enough spine not to be taken for a fool – which one would assume according to the “Lieberman calls in a chit” story. BB did what she wanted to do. One can only guess what her motives were, we don’t know – she didn’t tell us. Let’s hope she will act in the future more progressive.
Aw shucks, you guys. (blushes)
Fern Hill a poem by Dylan Thomas refers to summers he spent as a youth at a relatives house called “Fern Hill”.
Thank you for listening an responding. I never even told my
parents. And they are both dead now. I am sure in the end they would have been there for me. I was ashamed and scared at the time.
back at ya neuro
Hi OFG, say hi to Christy and peanut tomorrow for me. Also Mr. ReddHedd of course. Lucky you to see them! Glad your run is over — sounds like tough work.
I’m waiting to see what Boxer does Aug. 9th… I stopped expecting people to be perfectly consistent a long time ago, so, for me, how it plays out after the primary will be how I feel about her in the end…
xx
That is quite some poem – had not read it before.
Oh I would vote for her as I have in the past and mentioned yesterday. I find her idea of friendship, hmm, bothersome. She should tell Joe the truth and be a genuine friend. Does this put an x?y in the mix?
P.S. Now I am no longer afraid. I am a fighter. There
sandlin, you were lucky to have that $500 available — that wasnt cheap back then. Too many girls in a predicament couldnt scrape it up …
She has a unique opportunity on August Ninth to promote progressive values by talking RGJoe out of the Indy run. I hope she does.
Teddy @ 270
Boxer just annoyed me for so many different reasons with this last episode. Her stumping for a longtime colleague is really at the bottom of my list of annoyances. She ignored multiple emails about supporting him, didn’t even bother sending a “let’s just agree to disagree” letter or anything. She was rude to Maura, continually interrupting her. She either hasn’t taken the time to understand the PP and NARAL endorsement bogusness (bogusosity?!), or is grotesquesly misinformed, or is willing to throw choice under the bus when expedient. She is either grotesquely misinformed about Lieberman’s Plan B stance, hasn’t taken the time to learn his stance, or doesn’t care or is deliberately lying to protect him.
Honestly I’m more concerned about her apparently joining the Incumbocrat Party than about her stumping for Joe…though stumping for Joe *is* distasteful.
sandlin – hugs darlin
mommybrain – i’m with egregious – be alarmed and take serious immediate action
ilson46201 I didn’t have the $$. the boy paid for it.
If Boxer supports Joe as an Independent, she’s dead to me.
Fern,
anytime I feel a little blue, I hit google with fern hill and up pops that jewel. It takes one back to simple times with such incredible joy of wordpictures. Poems should be heard, and not read–this one is no exception. It never fails to move me.

Que Pasa? Done? Pshaw!! Dude!! I shag ass outta here to fetch another one (gas compressor) goofing off in Corpus Christi, TX (yikes, that’s along way from here) and put it to work in Sweetwater, OK!
Redd and OFG finally schmoozin ftf, kewl. Love your big manly truck stuff supplying our world Mr. Guy, you also so always smart & funny.
Eli Just set off that Dylan song in my head.
part where he sings
She ain’t dead, she’s just asleep.
Eureka- well, I’m probably gonna have to toss my survey. Outcomes and opinions are obviously more complex than this one instance. Geez, I wasn’t thinking- this is FDL, where people weigh issues based on much knowledge and many factors. But, I would be much happier it Boxer did indeed tell Lieberman the truth- tho I do have to ask exactly what you mean by that- seriously- what is the truth she should tell? As the number one issue, I’d say that Lieberman has done serious damage to the country and world by giving Bushco. cover for their insane policies re: Iraq and the ME. That seems to me me even more of a disconnect by Boxer than what ever she tried to defend (poorly) re: his statements on rape victims.
Eli 300 – the fuck ditto
sandlin at 8:08 pm – I was ashamed and scared at the time.
That’s the intended consequence of this repressive religious right regime, isn’t it? I hope you have worked it out for yourself. I did abortion counseling at a women’s health clinic many years ago, and to hear that this is an easy decision for women just infuriates. The whole process is excruciating and one that cannot be understood abstractly. Peace to you.
Any marine salvage lawyers out there? The Cougar Ace a 650 Ft. car carrier loaded with Mazdas tipped on it side but did not sink. The crew was rescued by the US Coast Guard a few days ago . The ship is now abandoned in international waters 250 off the Aluetions. So my question is who can or can’t take control of this abandoned ship? Reports are that a salvage team hired by the owners is headed that way.
The Coast Guard is still in tyhe area but will take no enforcement role.
Is it first come first serve?
new thread — lets hear it for the Boys
If Boxer supports Joe as an Independent, she’s dead to me.
I don’t think she will. But if she does..
BTW, where’d Mommybrain go? (Or am I just not seeing her comments?)
OFG – If you ever get stuck in Corpus head over to Robbstown, TX and Joe Cotton’s BBQ. Best I ever had. Folks drive three or four hours each way for those vittles.
OFG, you never cease to surprise.
Sharkbabe,
You sound like an Ornamental. Sometimes I no rite so good tho. But I’m so brite my mom calls me sun.
Deep into EPU territory, CT Bob bravely wanders in…
So tonight I went to a Ned-vent in Westport, found a message from Bill Clinton on my answering machine, VIDEOTAPED the answering machine repeating the message, edited a bunch of nonsense into the message, and created a new video.
My wife can’t WAIT for this frickin’ election to be over with!
See ya’s in Trex-ville!
I knew it! LOL
meta 307
I made peace with it many years ago. But you can understand why I have been getting very furious with these new laws. Furious
M -OK will type and tell you in a few mins. need more ice tea for late nite.)
I’ll check out that BBQ. I go through Robbstown when I go to Corpus.
About Boxer, when all is said and done, what it really all boils down to is she is trying with all her power and influence and might – at the cost of those who want to support her – to get the fucker re-elected!!!!!!! That just sucks no matter how you slice it.
Whig guy – You need Mr. Bederman – a prof at Emory Law School.
here
and, Mommybrain – don’t go for temporary restraining order unless a social services or psychology professional conversant with the situation tells you. In some circles, TROs are referred to as “death warrants”
Yes, meta, SUCKS!!!!

I would definitely take anything seriously as I have faced abusive/deranged persons before. Keep in mind that technology means that just cause caller ID says it…doesn’t mean he is there…however…be strategic. Make sure you have plans to thwart attempts to assault. Have mace etc handy and tell this person his advanced are not welcome. If he has been told advances are not welcome and persists…use your precautions.
Your instincts are your best friend. I got out of a bad situation with instincts, you can too.
I agree with prior posters, if this person is disturbed in any way your attention of any type will fuel his fire. Don’t give it to him. If he is far away it will deter him from continuing to contact you.
All the other advice I also find sound. Contact any and all authorities that might help you or build a case for stalking if it comes to that.
Problem is in many cases people don’t build the case and then when things are beyond the breaking point they contact the authorities, but at that point it is almost too late.
Just my two cents. I will be thinking of you but I am glad you have a MrMommybrain already to keep an eye on you. That helps lots.
Sharkbabe,
And I also meant to say (my mouse is trigger-happy on the “Submit Comment” button) that while I really enjoyed YKos, one of my disappointments was that I did not get to meet Sharkbabe…(or Angie, or *ilson, or the real Valley Girl, or John Casper, or Ed*ard Teller, or Eli, or a bunch of other really cool firepups, sorry if my wine-addled brain can’t think of them just now…)
Maybe next time…
wait a minute, I did meet *ilson, didn’t I? I’m so confused…
I missed YKos — Ive never been further west than Texas …
*ilson I guess I must have seen your picture on FDL around that same time–I remember your orange hair…maybe next time.
How about a little contest: Can you name the next “suggestion” from Jennifer or Jeffrey? Today they wanted fdl to pay attention to Congressional races — and supported each other in that recommendation!
What other distracting tasks do you think our new friend(s) and recommender(s) will have for the blog?
Teddy, they might say we don’t spend enough time supporting each other.
wesgpc at 199,
Shoestring it is. The link you gave is good. http://www.russmed.com I will be happy to tell you more after I get back from trip #28 to the former Soviet Union. Am bringing so many medical supplies that I am wondering if I have enough clothes for this trip. Oh well, priorities.
Thanks for your encouragement. I am a big believer in the ministry of encouragement. Even if you aren’t out there doing something you can encourage someone else who is. Those of us who are out there need this. Thx.
These single-issue groups, only interested fund raising for their own, are nuts. And the comment in this post shows very clearly that they are lunatics to boot.
Stupidly disgusting is what this is.
The blowback is gonna be very nasty.
A.Citizen at 330: what about the single issue voter? I thought that was what bugged the authors of Crashing the Gate.
As I wrote to them, I ain’t voting for no anti-choice candidate. And I really don’t appreciate a couple of guys telling me that abortion is something I need to get over.
Get a uterus.

I’m actually looking for an explanation that make sense to me, more than just giving Boxer the benefit of the doubt.
Going to Connecticut for Lieberman just doesn’t fit with the rest of her political persona – - doesn’t make sense to me.
An explanation for her doing something so out of character would be that she had was obligated to him from some previous event.
People were trying to think of various things that she could extract from Lieberman if she agreed to go to CT for him, and it just seems more plausible to me that she was making good on a previous promise.
HoJo has the loser stink all over him, so I can’t see her wanting to go there in anticipation of some future payoff. I would think she would avoid the agravation altogether – - unless he was calling in a chit she owed him already, the selfish bastard.

Thanks for sharing with us.
Peace be with you.
Sandlin:
What happened to you was horrific. The things you had to do, back then, just to have control of your body, is an outrage.
I wrote an essay about Gerri Santoro, a woman who died after attempting an illegal abortion, whose story propelled much of the calls to legalize abortion in the late 60s and early 70s. She had left behind two young daughters.
Her daughter contacted me about it, directly, and her fury over what is happening to legal abortion in this country haunts me.
I think of people like my mother, who had to hold the hands of a woman dying from a botched abortion. She has nightmares about how that woman was buried in an unmarked grave because someone dumped her on the emergency room’s sidewalk and left her there, with no identification of any kind.
And this is what these anti-choice demons want to have once more.
I dare them to tell me they don’t hate women, when they know what will happen when the last legal abortion is performed in this country. They know. And they WANT it to happen. They think it will be WONDERFUL.
FUCK THEM.
I’m pissed. I’m fuckin’ A pissed at NARAL and PP for letting things come to this. They have wrung their hands as right after right has been stripped away. Then they support Rape Gurney Joe? I am a gang-rape victim who was in no goddamned condition to get up off a gurney and travel to another hospital after my ordeal.
Not one more dime from me. I’m taking the knife they planted out of my damned back and plunging it into their black, traitorous hearts.
I went back to a formal email message from NARAL when I told them I will no longer send them money, and then I went BACK to them and said I would be curious as to HOW Lieberman clarified his position to them on the Plan B bill and rape victims going to other Hospitals.
Here is what I got:
Dear Pam,
We understand your frustration in this matter. The newspapers, indeed, have not covered his clarifications to his or our satisfaction. We are not legally allowed to clarify Senator Lieberman’s position for him, but if you call his office directly, we feel they will explain his policy on Emergency Contraception for Sexual Assault Survivors and other matters of choice for you. You can reach his Washington, DC office at (202) 224-4041. Again, thank you for contacting us and your support of pro-choice values.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth J. Shipp
Political Director
NARAL Pro-Choice America
(202) 973-3000, Ext. 4210
Now this is what Barbara Boxer was also saying, that Joe was mis-quoted.
WILL SOME OF YOU CALL JOE’S OFFICE, ASK WHAT WAS HIS INTENT ON PLAN B, and post it back here? I cannot make the call myself, I hung up with very bad sour grapes the other day on something else! Let’s see how the great man of principle explains away”In CT, it shouldn’t take more than a short ride to get to another Hospital”! New Haven Register, 3-13-06.
FYI.
It was Sen. Boxer who lead the floor fight against S. 403. Apparently, she took the responsibility when other Dems wouldn’t.
TeddySF, I don’t think Boxer ever left you. She just went to help a friend.
Everyone else. Boxer’s record on issue after issue that you care about should be enough to cut her some slack here. I’m not really sure you’ll find another Senator who has taken on progressive causes more than her. the ONLY Senator to challenge Ohio’s Electors, her harsh questioning of Condi Rice and Bolton, voting against the Iraqi war, 100% on choice. Hard to believe some of you would sell her down the river now.
