I drove all the way up to Waterbury yesterday excited about the prospect of seeing Bill Clinton speak. Whatever one may think of Bill, his politics and his legacy, his defiance in the face of the right-wing hate machine onslaught are inspirational. His 1999 SOTU speech was a thing to behold.
Spazeboy and I both had legitimate tickets, and were both given the heave-ho, recognized by Lieberman staffers we had encountered when we accompanied the Kiss Float to other canned events for Holy Joe. Spazeboy has his version of events here. Joe has evidently been picking up pointers from his kissin’ cousin George Bush on how to host a public appearance, because the same goons who nearly made the brave camera-weilding Connecticut Bob soil himself yesterday were in full force at the Bubba bash. Lieberman’s float-o-phobia is getting acute.
There were speakers that broadcast Clinton’s speech into the street in the poor Waterbury neighborhood but they wouldn’t let you stand close enough to hear them — when we tried we were quickly forced back into the "Free Speech Zone" at the end of the street. In the brief bit of Holy Joe’s whiny pitch we managed to catch he quite predictably lied, pretending he was boldly challenging the Bush Administration on global warming. How he did this as the only New England Senator to vote for the Bush/Cheney energy bill he did not explain.
Spazeboy will be on Colin McEnroe’s show at 5:40 pm EDT today talking about our Bushian ejection experience. You can listen live here.

woo-hoo!
Jane! Spazeboy!
You all took the words out of my fingertips. Happy Birthday Jane!
Who hoo! Jane and Spazeboy! Give em hell like we knew you would.
one suggestion – Spazeboy, next time you play the role of a HoJo guy, you must simply be Much More As*hole-ish!
I’m certain the guy was not nearly as nice as you…
WOW S-l-o-w Toobz today. Mercury retrograde ends just exactly when?
spazeboy!
Super video. When I heard they turned away Jane and Spazeboy, I was giddy with excitement. They have really kicked over the hornet’s nest this time.
And happy birthday to you Jane! We still love you even if the Lieberman staff don’t.
State Democratic leaders who get on the Joe LIeberman train to Loserville are risking their own careers. The most egregious breach was by James Amann, the Dem. Speaker of the House in Connecticut, who referred to those of us Connecticut Democrats who prefer Ned Lamont as a “shrieking minority”. Amann should be removed from his perch atop the General Assembly for this insult to members of his own party. He’s also made a complete fool of himself in public, as the latest Quinnipiac Poll has Lamont ahead of Lieberman 51-47 and other polls are even more in Lamont’s favor among Democrats. At the very least, Amann should have referred to us as a “shrieking majority,” don’t you think?
Ooooh that steamed me so much that I went and left petulant “You’re outta here honey” emails at his senate and campaign site.
What going on anyway, can’t you hire goons who say “dollface” anymore?
A repeat from the last thread. You can email Clinton at http://www.clintonfoundation.org or call 212-348-8882. If he doesn’t know about this, he should. It makes him look very, very bad.
I just left him a voice message.
Old Sow, Mercury goes direct July 29. Not a moment too soon for this girl…
Jane, you wild hippie protester you! Power to the people in Connecticut, and down with gasbags who don’t represent us.
A proud member of the shrieking majority.
Thanks, egregious. I’m sure I had much more fun outside with Spazeboy, Maura, Thirdparty, DeanFan84, Dad and Jon than they had inside listening to Holy Joe drone on in that unbearable whine of his.
Sometimes the universe intervenes on your behalf.
Truth to power, that’s our BirthDay Grrrl!
I bet you’ve both been thrown outta better places, but I really think BigDog needs to hear about this.
We are all spazeboy Democrats!

Quick OT – Atrios has link to Crooks and Liars – Tweety cut loose on Imus, bashed Bushco foreign policy, and according to John actually mentioned “elections” as the way to deal with things.
Whoever called this “the greatest show democracy has to offer” just now introduced the nail to the hammer, by Ned!
Happy B-Day Jane! Way to go you two, and everyone else in CT doing the dirty work.
Jane
I have found your whole adventure to CT to get a birds eye view of the campaign very enjoyable to read about and watch.
Thanks
OT In an effort to support and explain American Middle East policy, I thought I would try to clarify some recent statements of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
Rice: “We need to get to a sustainable peace, there must be a way for people to reconcile their differences.”
Translation: Israel needs its victory legitimized. There must be a way to get you Arabs to see this.
Rice: “I have no doubt there are those who wish to strangle a democratic and sovereign Lebanon in its crib. We, of course, also urgently want to end the violence.”
Translation: Israel is bombing Lebanon so we blame you Arabs. Condi likes the word urgent and she’s using it a lot. No doubt, that’s why she waited 12 days before going to the Mideast. It jist made everything so much more “urgent”. BTW what is all this talk about birth pangs and now cribs? Seems like Condi has something on her mind.
Rice: “It is time for a new Middle East. It is time to say to those that don’t want a different kind of Middle East that we will prevail. They will not.”
Translation: Neocons are very much alive and running things. PNAC would be so proud.
Rice: “The Palestinian people have lived too long with violence and the daily humiliations that go along with the circumstances here.”
Translation: lived too long with violence equals 39 years of Israeli occupation, daily humiliations equals 39 years of Israeli occupation, circumstances here equals 39 years of Israeli occupation. Conclusion: 39 years of Israeli occupation have nothing to do with your problems.
Rice: “You have our pledge that our common work of bringing a two-state solution to the people of Palestine and the people of Israel that we will not tire in our efforts.”
Translation: “Our pledge” equals You know you can trust President Bush, right? “Two-state solution” equals Israel plus Palestinian bantustan. “We will not tire in our efforts” equals our efforts have been minimal and we intend to keep them that way.
So, what were you guys going to do once you got in there?
Do tell.
People who care enough about our democracy to be involved in the political process have less freedom of expression than angry anti-abortionists who threaten women who are under emotional distress?
This “free speech zone” stuff disgusts me, and it needs to never, ever be accepted by people on the ground. (Easier said than done, I know.)
Don’t worry Jane. A little petzie like him can’t get a good Leo down (mine was yesterday, which I much prefer to think of as the 32nd anniversary of the US v. Nixon decision).
Many, many happy returns.
Mental_Equinox,
Marshall Wittmann really is clueless isn’t he? This bullshit idea of moving to the center has to eventually evaporate. The “center” is a moving target that drifts to the right every time they chase it. It’s called magnetic warfare.
I left a message at the Clinton Foundation, and you can too:
212-348-8882 press 3. You get a chance to re-record your message so if you get nervous, like I did, you can fix your message!
Democrats excluded from a Democratic rally organized around a speech by Democratic former President Clinton: Lieberman and his LieberTroopers should be ashamed for excluding a constituent. As well as a Jane Hamsher of the Left.
I am very glad to see the focus back on Joe Lieberman and his STUPID campaign for re-election. At least BigDog had the grace and courage to say neutral, almost nice things about Ned Lamont.
Can I resist getting on a plane these next two weeks? Really want to be in Connecticut for this fun.
OT to Bong
You still here? Tanks for the info back on “They Write Letters”. Haven’t been back since the late 70’s, but from what I hear/read, I might not want to disturb my own pictures of up-&-down 71 (especially mid-October and dogwood time). Just hope the sprawl somehow hasn’t engulfed Tontitown, but spoze that’s too much to ask . . .
Heh, I love the video. Should be even better when I get home and can hear it with sound (no goofing off at work, doncha know).
OT, that Chris Matthews on Imus (up at C&L) is pretty incredible. Definitely worth a a listen. Matthews passionate, angry and articulate and Imus a farkin’ tepid fool.
Spazeboy! =)
OT, that Chris Matthews on Imus (up at C&L) is pretty incredible. Definitely worth a a listen. Matthews passionate, angry and articulate and Imus a farkin’ tepid fool.
link please
Honestly? I was going to have a good time listening to Bill Clinton with some of my fellow Democrats. I couldn’t bring in my camera and I don’t know when I’ll next have an opportunity to see Big Dog, so I just wanted to soak it up.
Lieberman’s staff got to play “gatekeeper” for Bill Clinton yesterday, but in a video that I’ll post tomorrow, I have Ned’s word that if Bill comes back to campaign for him–I’ll be one of the first to get in.
I hope you guys can whip some publicity up in Vermont because residents there will be DISGUSTED over such jack-boot tactics.
OT:
For the non-lawyers who didn’t sit through two semesters of con law, if you want to understand how disgusting these signing statements are, read this by a Justice Dept. lawer who defended Clinton’s use of signing statements:
http://www.slate.com/id/2144476/entry/2144829/
from: Walter Dellinger
to: Dahlia Lithwick
This is the crux of his point — and it explains the problem better than anything I’ve read:
This administration has taken the astounding position that if the president has “inherent authority” to do and act whenever Congress is silent, then it follows that any act of Congress that regulates such an authority is an invalid impingement on his “inherent power.” This conflation of what a president can do if no law prohibits his action and what he can when the law forbids it is a truly insidious legal doctrine.

ot … but wtf democrats critiquing Maliki as Angie mentioned two threads down … so wrong on so many levels. As MFI points out, this shows a “wanton disregard for the lives of Iraqis and the american troops in Iraq”
http://www.courant.com/news/na…..ines-local
Yeah someone should inform Commander Codpiece et al that Chris Matthews somehow managed to gnaw through his restraints hehe.
Just in case, heading typo: Spazeboy and Me… should be Spazeboy and I Get Chucked…
And thaz okay…come Primary Day, J-Lie can get Up-Chucked…
Happy B-Day, Jane!
Jane, I really hope CT media picks up your adventures with the Liebergoons. That’s damn newsworthy.
OT Nice one Hugh at 11:30.
Per angie prior thread, Eugene Robinson and Richard Cohen published opposite stories today about it. Cohen argued Israel has been “proportional.”
Did Kobe and Katie and Lucy get into the Clinton rally? Did they get pictures?
When these idiots take it upon themselves to act with authority they don’t possess, anyone involved should as much as they can to get names and descriptions of the assholes. Video or photographs would be nice, too.
Swopa 38 — that was my fabulous fool-proof disguise!
And like Spazeboy, all I wanted to do was get in and hear Bubba. Neither of us had any intention of heckling Lieberman when he spoke, nor have we done so before. And they knew that.
Hoo-boy. One of those End-Timesers coming up on CNN.
just got a note from my mom who heard from a CT pol that the dems are importing folks from NJ and NY to work for Lieberman … (Jane – if you need the name, let me know)
Judging from the clips they played on NPR this morning, Clinton’s speech was less than enthusiastic.
Hello y’all from one who never went away. Want to start the bid at 50 bucks for that ticket to ‘nowhere mans’ lost revival. Sparks always rise and your tops. Happy happy!!
If you call the Clinton Foundation, Press #4, and not #3. I just talked to a live person, and not a machine.
I told the nice young man that I wanted to thank Bill for his visit to Connecticut yesterday, that I am absolutely terrified of what Joe’s threatened Indy run will do to our CT Dem Party, and to our hopes of winning 3 House seats and the Governor’s mansion, and that if Joe were to lose, I hope President Clinton would come back to Connecticut to urge Joe Lieberman to do the right thing, and simply retire.
Anybody have Peter Dauu’s email address?
A guide on why Bob Somerby defends Joe Lieberman. (Hint: It has to do with refusing to admit that Gore made a monumental blunder in 2000.)
Tweety hits the big point and one the Dems should be pushing nationally: We need a fresh start.
Everybody knows we need to do something different. But the current crew has backed themselves into a corner and cannot change. They’ve dug in too deep.
Only new leadership can even think about new ways of moving us forward.
Ooo, CNN now has a bad brushfire in Benedict Canyon, Bev’ly Hills — very near houses.
Hugh @ 11:30 — maybe Condi’s adopted one o’those snowflakes….
And I heard Matthews live on Imus this morning-it was incredible. J-Lie’s been an Imus irregular for years, Dodd also. Time for Imus to open his eyes to the new kid on the block and we kidz on the blog….
lotus:
You might want to stay away… The “sprawl” goes from Greenland north past the MO border. It’s still lovely in the village when the dogwoods bloom, however… and the fall colors are splendid (weather permitting).
:-)
I gotta admit , you handled that a LOT better than I would have. I tend to get a little pissy when a**holes yank things out of my hand.BTW, I strongly suggest the old Groucho Marx nose/glasses for maximum inconspicouity.
Is that a real word?lol.
When they start turning away people (I understand they did not “sell out” the hall), I would say (actually it’s a favorite phrase of my younger daughter) that on top of everything else, “that completes the ensemble.”
Great video! Something tells me that’s going to be as haunting to Joe as the Float.
Siun — its been out there for well over a week that Joe has so neglected his homebase political machine that he’s been having to hire folk come in and do his ‘volunteer work’ — he can afford it but it’s also a sign of his fundamental political organizational weakness. After 18 years in the Senate, he should have legions of doting voters willing to work for him … but he doesnt.
I was a little disappointed in Lamont’s stance on Lebanon:
http://nedlamont.com/issues/62…..iddle-east
Is this an issue where he has to be parsing words so carefully? It can’t be how he actually feels. If Lamont really thinks Israel is acting in self defense, and this is still about the soldiers’ kidnapping, that’s a bit alarming to me. If Lamont’s statement is politics as usual, I suppose it’s understandable, but I wish he’d be more plain spoken and truthful (damn the consequences), as he seems to be on other issues. It’s part of what separates him from Lieberman.
You know, it would be great to get that video out there. These guys have painted a picture of the netroots and bloggers as these unwashed, crazy, wildly angry maniacs. This disproves that theory and it would be good for people to see that activists are just everyday people.
This is making my blood boil, siun @ 41. It is not an antiwar stance at all; it is just plain stupid and does show wanton disregard for lives. It is grandstanding of the worst kind– I want my party and my country to be better than this. I am furious at what I consider pandering & bootlicking behavior that shows utter contempt for and ignorance of the long history and culture of the region.
Jane, fwiw, Clinton is getting his clock cleaned in this Hartford Courant poll (credit goes to lotus for finding it this am)
Does Former President Bill Clinton’s support of Sen. Joseph Lieberman make you more likely to vote for Lieberman?
9.5% Yes (118 responses)
21.0% No, it makes no difference (260 responses)
69.5% No, it makes me less likely to vote for Lieberman (862 responses)
I can’t believe anyone is patting Chris Matthews on the back. Just because someone happens to agree with you sometimes doesn’t make them smart, honest, interesting, or worth listening to. Matthews is a self-important turd in a world of self-important turds. Just walk away, he doesn’t deserve to be listened to.
*ilson – nodding, I assume Joe needs to import supporters and mom has *not* been impressed but she is worried at the party support for Joe shown by Bill’s appearance. My interpretation of her comments is that we’re fighting a good fight but that the powers are now slamming back.
DeanFan84 at 50, usually you can reach Daou at The Daou Report at salon.com but it says there, they are off for the month of July.
Happy Birthday, honey LOL
OT-CNN doing a piece “Apocalypse Now?”
59% believe it will happen.
Norah & Gallagher (faith & values correspondent..who knew that had one of those)even mentioning rapure ready website.
Blahh.
Here are a few snips of the email I got this AM from Sen Boxer in reply to my email sent a few days ago ….
“So why did I go to Connecticut? When Joe asked me to tell his constituents about our work together on the environment and choice, I told him I would.
I realize this decision has deeply disappointed you. I completely understand your position and only hope that you will come to understand mine.
“He is one of a small handful of Senators who has joined with me both times I have introduced the Freedom of Choice Act, the most strongly pro-choice piece of legislation in the U.S. Senate.
Because of his long record on choice and other important progressive issues, Joe has won the endorsement of organizations such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL, AFL-CIO, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Human Rights Campaign.
Of course, as you rightly point out, Joe and I don’t agree on everything. And nothing has deeply disappointed me more than our complete disagreement on the Iraq War.”
I can post the whole thing if there is anyone wants. I think all wh sent her an email about teh CT trip got/ will get the same reply I did.
Cheers.
Also, I just finished the New York magazine story on Joe. It is ironic that the man that is trying to paint himself as a victim, because the dems don’t have room for him because he disagrees on a few issues, doesn’t have room for people in his events that disagree with him on a few issues.
angie – I am livid
and it seems like it’s the “progressives” like DeLauro who have decided to “stand up” on this …
horrible sign of how far AIPAC’s tentacles reach into the dems as well and such a total disaster in terms of speaking to the ME
Phoenix Woman, I did happen to read Somerby today, I don’t think this helps Holy Joe out much:
None of this has a thing to do with who should win the Connecticut race. If we were a Connecticut voter, we’d be considering a replacement, too.
Tsk, tsk, Jane…You and Spazeboy neglected to display your official CFL voting inspector badges…Its unbridled power maximizes bamboozlement upon Joe-minions like a Jedi mind trick on Elan Sleazebaggano.
;>)
It’s how Karl prefers it.
Saltinwound @ 61
I’m disappointed generally in how our whole Legislature is beholden to the Israel lobby. Getting AIPAC out of our political process is a longer-term problem though. We will have time to tackle that issue through 2007 and 2008.
Not something I would hold against Ned personally at this point.
hey guys, did you see this in Froomkin’s article today? “Bush boldly signed legislation yesterday that bars condominium and homeowner associations from restricting how the American flag can be displayed”
I think we should have a contest to see which house that belongs to an HOA can display the flag in the most creative way – something like what the freeway blogger does.
“I was a little disappointed in Lamont’s stance on Lebanon.”
Saltin, I totally agree, but can you cut Ned a little slack?
He’s got everyone in the Dem party except FDR and African Americans campaigning against him for a Bushclone who says he won’t abide by the results of the Dem primary.
IMO it’s completely unrealistic for Ned to take a different position in CT. There are plenty of other Dems in the U.S. who can make the case that has to be made.
Cornflake, thank you.
Excuse me, Jane…I said I ALMOST soiled myself. Big difference.
Jeez!
Ejected from a Lieberman pep ralley?
Didn’t the “brown shirts” do the same thing to their perceived enemies previous to the ramp-up to to WW II? Of course the brown-shirts did other things to their opponents outside the hall. I would submit that being denied entrance to any Lieberman function is a “blue-badge of courage”.
CT Bob, be glad you don’t have Ken Starr sniffing the evidence *g*.
uptownNYchick @ 69 – Boxer’s letter is posted
here at 88, I think…
I hope that Jane and spazeboy continue to peacefully seek admittance to future Lieberman events and that spazeboy deputizes a collegue to record the occasions on video. Give the Lieberman campaign staff more opportunities to demonstrate what fascists they are, and publicize it.
btw, did The Kiss Float attend the Clinton event?
Aw, Bong, thanks. That’s what I’ve sensed. Been more-than-half seriously considering bugging-out back to Fetvul or Spfd if [HA — when] we get more ‘canes here, but the impression you just confirmed argues, “Well, not Fetvul.” I’ve seen S. Florida, and hills wouldn’t improve it.
Dang those Waltons, anyhow.
Just inhibits me to face old-ladyhood where’s there’s ice to fall on . . .
Ah, I just read it again. The whole sentence. Now it makes sense. Sorry bout that Jane!
I’m getting blog-vision; time to take a break.
whoops, correction @ 82 – Barb’s letter at 18
…but the link does look like if you click it, you’ll get to see me soil myself. LOL!!!
ironranger 67 —
Yeh, saw that too — but only 17% believe “in my lifetime.”
Which figure, we can surmise, is miraculously ALSO where Chimpy’s JAR will finally settle.
here’s the story angie and I were discussing … this is astonishing:
how do the dems see this as helping Iraq or themselves?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20…..MlJVRPUCUl
OT
LHP and all who helped me with preparing for radio with Ann C. yesterday. Thanks again.
The report back: the host cut the segment short and I didn’t get on, after listening to that evil wanker for at least 15 minutes. (aaaaaggghhh!!!! the cackling!!!) There were others who did, though. I have been asked to do it next time. (There’s going to BE a next time?? Urg.)
Meanwhile, I alerted Crooks and Liars to tape it.
Oh there they go again. The Israeli military is pounding Beirut. Just a little pest extermination. Like in men, woman and children, who have nothing to do with Hezbollah. The Israeli government is doing genocide. This needs to stop! Bush, Rice, Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld and a bunch of others fit the definition of war criminals.
The pilot is terrific!!

siun, “astonishing” it is (my emphasis).
As IF!
That was some good weed Busted found for us this morning, but whatever Reid and Schumer got into runs rings around it!
It’s the plaid hat, Jane. It’s a dead giveaway for ‘radical subversive progressive’ type.
OK Kiddo – take a look at the link I posted just above – the dems are going all out to critique Maliki for criticizing Israel!
This is very bad stuff indeed …
909 days left if we can’t throw his a** in jail first.
909 days for them to figure out how to steal whats not bolted down.
909 days for them to get lawyered up.
909 days and counting.

Word of The Spazeboy Incident is spreading through the tubes of the internets. Josh Marshall just flagged it at Talking Points Memo, via TPM Muckraker (linking back to Spazeboy’s blog). Josh Marshall’s audience is quite mainstream, this should be buzzing in Washington D.C. very soon.
YouTube is a pretty incredible tool for the grass roots. I wonder how much longer before the authorities decree that it can’t be used for political purposes?
You are SO right siun at 12:14
Fawaz Gerges , author of ” The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global ” and professor of international affairs and Middle Eastern studies at Sarah Lawrence College, was online Tuesday, July 25, at 11 a.m. ET to discuss discusses the ongoing crisis in Lebanon and Israel. Gerges, who yesterday returned from Beirut, is spending 15 months in the Middle East conducting field research. was terrific today:
“Fawaz Gerges: There is a misunderstanding in Israel and the United States that Israel can defeat Hezbollah, or Party of God, on the battlefield and rid Lebanon of pro-Iranian Shiite’s militancy. Here are some facts to consider.
First, Hezbollah is not just a militia; it is a social movement that is deeply rooted within the Lebanese Shiite community which represents about 38 perecnt of the population. Hezbollah has a large social and walfare infrastructure that provides social services to hundreds of thousands of people – schools, clinics, daycare centers, and much needed employment opportunities.
Equally important, Hezbollah provide a large segment of the Shiite community, historically disadvanteged and marginalized with a sense of identity and pride. The hammering away at Hezbollah will likely deepen the feeling of victimhood within the Shiite community and turn it against Israel and the West.
Secondly, contrary to the conventional wisdom, hezbollah is not a like rotten tooth that can be plucked out easilty. Hezbollah is one of the most pivotal political players on the Lebanese landscape. It has two ministers in the current government and a large popular base of support in the country and the region.
Thirdly, since the mid-1980s Hezbollah has proved itself on the battlefield against Israeli military might. It forced Israel to withdraw under fire from a small strip of land in souther Lebanon in 2000. No other Arab state or a group has been able to militarily defeat Israel on the battlefield. Hezbollah is the most powerful paramilitary non-state organization in the region. Its military and organizational skills dwarf those of Palestinian Hamas and other militant groups like Al Qaeda. It is a power to be reckoned with. Israeli leaders have already scaled their demands in the last few days because they have come to appreciate the costliness of aiming too high in its fight against Hezbollah….
Fawaz Gerges: Hello Graham, good to hear from you. I just arrived in the States from Beirut yesterday.
I fear that if the conflict continues and if Israel keeps targeting the civilian infrastructure and institutions, the democratically-elected Lebanese government could collapse. Israel’s systemic aerial bombing and increasing civilian casualties – over 330 people have died and more a thousand injured – have already undermined the stability of the government. Small wonder that the Lebanese prime minister has made several appeals to the international community, particularly the United States, to broker a ceasefire on humnanitarian grounds. He also warned U.S. and Europe that Israel’s collective punishment policy of the Lebanese people and government is jeopardizing the future of Lebanon and his government.
I also fear that the emergence of a devastating sectarian strife between Shiites and Sunnis in Lebanon. This fault line could wreck Lebanon tear it to shreds. I think that Israel’s punitive measures are designed to turn the Lebanese people against Hezbollah. The only probelm with this equation is the potential of internal strife that will likely burn Lebanon and will have spillover effects on Israel for the forseebale future.”….
lotus – I am stunned here – what is the upside for them in doing this? and how murderously clueless can they be? Maliki is not my choice for head of Iraq but damn he is the head at the moment and attacking him like this is so ….
off to scream a bit more
It sounds like the “Israel Is Always Right, All the Time” lobby is putting the squeeze on Senate Democrats.
Jane and Spaze were adorable.
Re: the polls – it still very much bothers me that the Harris poll shows that we have gone UP 14% on people who think there were WMDS in Iraq. And that spin on Hussein having strong ties to al-Qaeda is back. I wouldn’t discount those – I think spinning is in full force pre-election and there needs to be response.
Just yesterday I saw someone opining that Iraqi women weren’t able to vote before we rescued Iraq and that girls weren’t able to go to school. And the “fighting them over there, so we don’t have to fight them here” spiel.
I think realists decided once the numbers got down to the 30s from the 70 that most people finally had figured it out. IMO, there needs to be some noise back.
It is astonishing that the dems are trying to twist the arm of a man already perceived as the puppet of the US by his people, the democratically elected PM of a sovereign nation, the Republic of Iraq, and further isolate him as a stooge for America while Iraq is in flames with 100’s killed a day while his people and a lot of the world see Israel as committing collective violence in another democracy in the ME.
OMG!!!!!!!
siun — isnt it time that Americans realize Maliki is no Western-style Liberal Democrat ? He is so reactionary he wouldnt shake hands with Condi Rice or you. I quite disagree about using Israel as a cudgel to beat him with — the Shia death squads run by his government is horrid enough.
John Casper, I am cutting Lamont “a little slack.” That’s why I used the words “a little disappointed,” instead of more heated offerings. This isn’t a deal breaker for me. I’m just saying that one of my main problems with Lieberman is how he accomodates and appeases. I personally would prefer to see Lamont not do it on this life and death issue.
what’s that old adage about
a woman scorned?
oh yeah… something about “hell hath no fury”…
where the Abramoff scandal began and Scanlon’s downfall at Muckraker…. a little field trip to where it all began.
If Negroponte had an ounce of character, he would be in the oval office pounding his fist on Bush’s desk, demanding that Bush rein in Israel.
How dumb am I for even thinking that Negroponte might consider this as part of his @#$%^&* job?
Happy Birthday Jane! Kind-of a nice present from NoMo’s boys, giving you an opportunity to showcase true American values on a national stage!
And I’m so glad to hear the hat’s a disguise; diamonds should not be covered with mud on a regular basis (although it didn’t seem to work anyway, that’s the thing about diamonds…)
My apologies Saltin.
btw, John Casper, I have used your terrorist vs all things good and right question twice in chats at the wapo and had them published. thank you; hopefully the idea will take root in some heads.
“…demanding that Bush reign in Israel.”
Isn’t it bad enough that he reigns here?
Happy birthday, Jane!
John, don’t be silly, it’s fine.
Fawaz was great today.
Bush is opposed to the Israeli genocide- but wants it to go on longer! Yes folks- that’s his official position.
This is so much fun. From the Muckraker website:
Go Jane and Spazeboy!
Siun and angie – good lord, that is some stupid tactic…hard to know what exactly they are trying to do here – to look tough on terrorism? Are they trying to make it harder for Iraq to survive in the Middle East? Did they really expect a nation that is about 80% Arab to come to the defense of and support Israel? Are they deliberately trying to have the underlying message be, “How dare you – after all we’ve done for you – take a position counter to Israel?” Are they trying to make it crystal clear that we expect Maliki to toe the line we’ve set for Iraq? Is this a sovereign government or not? Yeah, let’s try shaming these people – that always works so well in the Middle East.
All I have are questions – really just a stupid, stupid move.
This race between Ned Lamont and Lieberman shouldn’t even be close. Why is that a lot of the folks in my party (Dems) are so confoundingly unconcerned? So many of us seem to be absolutely consumed with apathy. I am ashamed of many of us. Innocents are dying. The Lamont/Lieberman contest is clear. It is a choice between right and wrong. Morality or immorality. Possibly, life or death. And so many don’t even bother to vote.
Sen. Schumer says,
“”Before he speaks in front of the Congress and the American people, there’s a very simple question we are asking the prime minister today: Which side is he on when it comes to the war on terror?” Schumer said.”
Someone should ask Schumer which side he is on when it comes to killing innocent women and childred and bombing hospitals in a disproportionate response to a terror attack. I guess I already know the answer.
Schumer is portraying the situation in Lebanon as two-dimensional. It is not.
lotus, angie, Jenny from the Blog, and Leslie in CA -
I left replies to all of you on the prior thread.
that Hartford Courant poll about Clinton helping or hurting Lieberman was VERY interesting. An overwhelming majority said it made people less llikely to vote for him. I think the Big Dog finally got back at Joe for the Blow Job sermon!!!
Happy birthday Jane. What a crappy present, to get kicked out. Or, maybe it will highlight the differences between Ned and Joe and be a great present in hindsight.
Stephen, you are a true gentleman! ;)
Okay, since we’re having such fun with guessing games at Jane’s b’day party, who’s gloomier about this Courant-poll update — the visitor (and spouse) or the visitee?
Yes, Bill’s support makes me more likely to vote for Joe — 120 (9.5%)
No diff — 270 (21.5%)
No, now LESS likely — 868 (69.0%)
Well, I guess we know Schumer and Reid are firmly in the AIPAC fold:
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Democrats in the US Senate called on Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to condemn Hezbollah’s attacks against Israel and to recognize Israel’s right to defend itself.
The lawmakers expressed dismay during a press conference over Maliki’s recent criticism of “Israel aggression” in Lebanon and called for a “clarification” from the Iraqi leader before he appears Wednesday before a joint session of Congress.
The lawmakers suggested that some members of Congress may choose to boycott the event if an explanation is not forthcoming.
“No matter how politically expedient he thinks it may be, to stand with America, you have to stand against terrorism,” said Senator Chuck Schumer.
“Before he speaks in front of the Congress and the American people, there’s a very simple question we are asking the prime minister today: Which side is he on when it comes to the war on terror?” Schumer said.
In a letter dated July 24, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, along with other party leaders, called on the Iraqi leader to clarify his views before speaking to a joint session of the US Congress.
Just a comment. I’ve probably been visiting this site everyday for the past 6 months. And in terms of political views or intellectual arguments made…more than likely, i’m in agreement with what’s written here. This includes my views on Joe Lieberman. However, I think things are getting a little out of control. There’s a certain amount of giddiness and immaturity in what’s being posted here of late that’s really unflattering and is just feeding the argument that Joe Lieberman is being unfairly treated. I really think you should be careful. Your efforts could backfire. Personally, I’m turned off enough to look elsewhere for updates on Ned Lamont’s campaign.
[ Moderator: this is Eric’s first-ever comment here and I suspect it will be his last too! ]
Happy birthday, Jane – you look fabulous, hat and all!
The establishment is going to shut out anybody who is not on message every chance they get. And that includes the DLC establisment.
They have their talking points distributed to the compliant press, and they do NOT want somebody telling an alternate story – the actual truth.
Tell the truth – the first time you came to FDL, your first thought was “Oh thank God – I thought I was the ONLY person thinking that!”
That’s how the establishment wants us – divided and conquered.
FDL and the blogosphere threatens the establishment’s hegemony over the message,so the pushback described on video clip is not surprising.
Sad to see what some Democrats will sink to, and indicative of the work before us. A few elections are the beginning, not the end.
Jane, I trust there was a proper celebration of your birth anniversary – I wish you many more to come!
they can’t do that to my friend jane!
skippy calls the big dog
(ps, i used my real name when leaving the message, so don’t get your panties in a bunch when you read what i said)
There is a misunderstanding in Israel and the United States that Israel can defeat Hezbollah, or Party of God, on the battlefield
That’s the problem with so much of the overall policy in the ME right now and it really effects, not just the ME, but all the world that has fundamentalists – Jewish, Muslim or Christian. And it is creating more and more fundamentalism in all areas.
You have paramilitary groups involved, so there has to be military support and backing for certain initiatives and it’s naive to think that the conflicts can be severed from military aspects in their entirety for resoluton. But the whole concept that the conflicts are military conflicts is an incorrect premise and working from that premise won’t ever get any of us anywhere productive.
It’s why our military is so mired in Iraq – they have no recognizable military mission.
And government is being dismantled from within with a flight of qualified and an influx of useless ideology. And Dems are rushing to find a message that will comport with the realities this Administration and the RNC have created instead of just claiming a fact based reality.
Heck, I may end up in the 17% before too long.
Anne – here’s the kicker in the letter from the Senate dems to Maliki:
“”As you know, the American people have given so much in the name of fighting global terror and helping build a better future for the people of Iraq,” the Senate Democrats said.
“Americans deserve to know whether Iraq is an ally in these fights.”
how dare they!
I hope this proves to be not too significant – but I spoke with a colleague today who is very active in local Democratic politics. I started talking up Lamont, and she interrupted me mid-sentence. . .saying “I hope Ned Lamont is aware that alot of independents are registering for the primary so they can vote for Lieberman.” She and her husband are both voting for Lieberman. I asked her why, and she said because he thinks he’s done a “good job”.
I started to talk about the war, Terry Schiavo, Alito but she didn’t want to discuss it further. She also admitted that the independents she knows who are planning to vote for Lieberman are doing so because of Israel. This may be a bigger factor than we realize, and perhaps has not been reflected in the polls.
Please let this be a bump in the road!
siun…94
I have looked at it. And I am embarrassed for my party. I am ashamed of my country. And I ache to stop the killing.
Thanks Saltin.
It’s a well known fact that petite womeen in Burberry hats, and young men who look like Opie can threaten the very foundation of democracy.
Happy birthday Jane.
What is this horseshit about free speech zones????
The last time I checked, the first amendment still read:
[Emphasis added]
The entire country is a free speech zone, and neither King George nor his DINO crony HoJo have any authority to isolate protestors in purdahs while calling them free speech zones.
Would someone please add this article to the Bill of Impeachment?
BC
OldCoastie, that is one beautiful tale, innit? Thanks so much for the link.
I’d like a new T-shirt that reads,
I AM in a Free Speech Zone!
That Reid and Schumer (just on T.V. ranting against the Iraq leader) would do a letter telling the American puppet what to say is ugly pure through. I would think you would talk to him like a leader. But this just proves that he is an American puppet there to do our bidding.
These letters will end his viable work as any sort of leader in Iraq. I am disgusted through and through. Reid of all people — I thought he was about to get tough on the Iraq war? Not so much huh. The lobbyists (whose initials I refuse to name) are out threatening everyone and everybody the worse it gets over there. Across the world Israel is taking a beating politically, and what does America do? Rah, rah at the bombing.
Once again, I am ashamed, yes ASHAMED of our ldeaders of both stripes.
One small positive is that the TM appears to be continuing to cover Lebanon as a “humanitarian crisis.” That’s better than what Harry Reid just did.
OT, I am routinely very critical of Shumur, but on this one issue, I give him a pass. IMO, we need other Dems to step up on this one.
Just out of ignorant curiosity, has anyone been able to challenge the “free speech zone” in the courts yet, as an abridgement of their first amendment rights?
Bottom line: DEMOCRATS DON’T DO THIS.
Bottom line: KARL ROVE DOES THIS.
Straight out of the “if it walks like a duck” school of thinking: the Lieberman campaign is being orchestrated by the Bush White House. At the very least, working in cahoots.
I think this scandalous little fact needs to be mentioned loudly, on Colin McEnroe, and anywhere there’s an open mic or camera.
siun at 131– Looks like the dems looked up imperial and colonial hubris in the rethug lexicon and saw something they liked.
how dare they, indeed!
the “free speech zone” thing is so widespread that I’m positive the ACLU et al have tested it out thoroughly and lost.
Also, I don’t understand Moderator’s note in eric’s comments (#127) … or was Eric moderating his own comment? It left me feeling kind of itchy.
eric:
‘ear!
:-)
*ilson,
I saw an AP piece in Sunday’s Albuquerque Journal (a/k/a, Albuquerque’s Urinal) that said the ACLU suits challenging the free speech zones and selective expulsions from public events are finally beginning to reach maturity.
So there’s a ways to go yet, but we’ll get our trials. Here’s hoping for judges who believe in the Bill of Rights.
BC
Jane —
Happy birthday.
Brilliant video. This is another “kiss” moment, and if the MSM picks it up, they’ll show it with the Kiss float too. A double.
I hope you’ve made the youtube thingy available to Countdown? Hardball might even show it.
I’m in awe.
I do not see any moderation in #127. He just stated his view.
signers of the house letter asking Hastert to cancel Maliki’s speech:
Among the signers of the letter were Emanuel, Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), Jan Schakowsky (D-Il.), Gary Ackerman (D-NY), Steven Rothman (D-NJ), Michael McNulty (D-NY), John Lewis (D-Ga.), Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Nita Lowey (D-NY), Joseph Crowley (D-NY), William Delahunt (D-Mass.), C.B. Maloney (D-NY), Barney Frank (D-Mass.), John Olver (D-Mass.), Sander Levin (D-Mich.), George Miller (D-Calif.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Tim Bishop (D-NY), Shelley Berkley (D-Nev.) and Artur Davis (D-Ala.)
full story:http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com/news_theswamp/2006/07/dems_cancel_ira.html
The quote from DeLauro on msnbc this morning was that he should not have the “privilege of addressing the Congress.”
gah!
First, a big giddy thanks to the FDL moderator crew…some of the other blogs are virtually unreadable with all of the spew in the middle of the discussions :)
Second, I do think it’s really abominable, how both the US and Israeli leadership keeps attempting to dictate to sovereign states how they should be running things, and who their people should be electing, etc. There is not going to be peace in the ME period, until and unless Israel acknowledges the duly elected leaders of it’s neighboring countries. They don’t get to pick which parties get to be in the PA government. They don’t get to pick which parties get to be in Lebanon’s government. And bombing the government offices of its neighboring countries is quite simply not going to solve anything.
Oh, and hey Israel…GET THE HELL OUT OF OUR GOVERNMENT!! You’re destroying your own country, leave the US alone k thx bye.
Dem Senators: We are watching you kowtow to Israel. We don’t like it! Cut it out or we’ll lieberman you too! :)
(let the pearl clutching commence hehe)
sorry, blew the link:
http://newsblogs.chicagotribun…..l_ira.html
the list includes Barney Franks! damn
I was the Moderator for Erics comment. It smelled like a classic ‘concern troll’ so I checked that in all his alleged six months of daily reading, he never commented here before. No other issue seemingly so moved him as our mistreating poor ole Joe ! Sounds like a LieberTroll to me…
Am I the only one that thinks Jane looks like she’s turning 24? Or izzit just the hat…?
Bustedknuckles, #149: I am paranoid. Thanks.
angie says:
July 25th, 2006 at 12:35 pm
Thanks again!
Well, siun, angie and Mary (don’t you DARE join that 17%, we need you here, madam), it’s not so much the arrogant offensiveness of Reid-Schumer’s little tantrum that drops my jaw as the oblivious stupidity of it.
When I said “As IF!” I meant, “Right. And Maliki has such a handle on things where he is that he can absolutely deliver ‘Iraq’ wherever you boys find its considerable diplomatic weight is most helpful!”
They are ninnies.
…happy birday Jane, a dynamic extrovert with an introspective depth… blending these two traits will reinforce your facade with philosophical strength…your only obstacles are making up your mind how it is you want to make it and underestimating your abilities…In positions of leadership (yours to express), resort to charm and the gift of gab and others will do just about anything you ask of them…compelling need for self expression you can work at the back or the front of an organization…nervous restlessness can be eased by finding paint and easel , a perfect channel for expressing your varied moods…a natural charmer, many seek you out including those with a few problems… caution should be excercised in affairs of the heart…
So says the “Symbols of the Ancients” for your birth day…wishng you the best!
Re the Reid/Schumer letter, has anyone seen a list of signers? If my guys are one it, they’re gonna hear from our Rootz. Why can’t anyone understand that the first policy principle is to stop the killing immediately? Everything else is 9th priority. Think of how the US might have helped repair it’s tarnished image world wide, let alone in the ME, and advance the prospects for peace and stability in the ME, and avoided further splits with the Iraqi leaders, if it had called on the parties to do that as soon as the kidnappings occurred.
Jane, So I guess they must have a blackball book with photos that they hand out to the event bouncers? You said you weren’t recognized by the man in the street, so somebody’t been doing their homework. Be careful, no dark alleys for you, honey.
OT question for *ilson –
There is an 1890’s office block (The Romeo Building) in my neighborhood that has an old painted sign — “The *ilson Drug Company”, or something like that.
Would you like some photos?
Thanks siun, you gave the answer before I posted my question.
My bad *ilson,I had not f-5′d yet. *g*
If Jane had been wearing a beret with a red star on it, her ejection might have been understandable, though still outrageous. But in a Burberry hat?
Oh, and, Happy Birthday, Jane!
Stephen at 121 – thanks, and I left you a reply as well.
Let’s say Lamont had openly criticized Israeli policy. What then? After this stunt by Reid, would not every Dem in the Senate and half those in the House spend the next two weeks in Connecticut stumping for Joe?
IMO, Lamont was smart to keep his criticism of the situation squarely on the Bush administrations lack of effort in the region over the last 5 years.
Spazeboy — would it be okay if i name my cat after you? He’s feral but sweet
There are two letters or efforts – the House letter to Hastert asking him to uninvite Maliki and threatening a boycott of Maliki’s speech and the Reid/Schumer thing.
These folks lay down for fascism over and over and then suddenly they decide to beat up on Maliki …
*ilson #154: or perhaps I am not. Okay, whatever. I readily admit that I have no troll-dar. But I live in a place where progressives are a resented minority, and am admittedly a little sensitive about needing to hear respect for differing viewpoints. But I leave it to your moderating wisdom. Also, please note, I am not a troll, but have been reading this blog for quite a while now, and have only left comments here for the first time today. And to the rest of you, sorry to swerve this comment thread off a good and worthy topic.
“Spazeboy and I…” not “Spazeboy and me…”
I just called the Lieberman campaign and they said the reason you got chucked was because of the bad grammar.
Oh, and happy birthday.
-ck- — the *ilson name is so common I have no pride in it particularly. Hell, it was even (spit) Ronald Reagan’s middle name! I do thank you for your kind thoughts and generosity.
Posture, scratch away.
Sure looks like a moderator’s comment to me. I think it was a very civil warning to Eric that he sure sounds like a planted concern troll. If Eric isn’t a troll, he’ll “get it,” and make comments that are tied to some issue or not quite so vague.
In my experience, when lurkers, or those pretending to be, announce their presence so directly, especially with a very vague comment about things “getting a little out of control,” buttressed by “I’ve been reading here for six months,” about 99.99999…% they are just a paid concern troll from Whinerman or Rove.
The moderator, being a lot more diplomatic than I, just gave a gentle warning.
FDL has terrific tolerance, but when comments are genuine, they are about something specific, such as “Fitz!” as the intial comment or a half dozen other things. I hope I’m wrong. I hope eric and you are both different people and both legit. We need all the help we can get.
Jane, isn’t it enough that you are smart, you have to be sexy too?
Hi there, “Posture,” lot of us need more’n’better of you around here, I’m pretty sure.
And Stephen Parrish, yes, thank you for your gracious reply back there. Stylishness runs in the genes, it does.
lotus – I’m not sure about the 17% (missed that) but I’ve never been a diehard dem … began working politics as a jr high kid supporting LBJ coz he was going to “bring the boys home” so I’ve never trusted either party. I’ve managed anti-machine republican campaigns as well as worked for McCarthy, McGovern and dem gotv efforts … and yes, I’d love to see the dems retake both houses but things like today remind me that that in itself will not bring change.
That said, I love Lamont because he is running as the candidate of the people – and standing up for participatory democracy … a sadly antiquated idea these days.
I’m no fan of trolls; they certainly can disrupt things.
That being said, the irony here – if anyone cares to see it – is that eric was kinda relegated to a free speech zone…
Busted at 149,
If you do refresh or F5 then you will prob be able to see the moderation.
Oops, siun, possible miscommunication here.
The “17%” I was referring to has to do with the Harris poll’s finding of how many ‘Murkans expect “the Rapture to occur in my lifetime” (or however they worded it).
John Casper #173: Okay, I get it. This is my last comment on this topic I swear. And for future posting reference, I am not an Eric, only a slightly anal-retentive Posture.
laughing … am so far from expecting the rapture! thanks lotus!
siun — thanks for the house letter linky; according to CNN, the Senate letter was Schumer, Reid and Durbin!! I can’t tell whether there were other signers.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITI…..ress.iraq/
What an eye you have for it all, Anne (177).
How’s your hayid coming along? Some of Teddy’s good stuff might help . . . if Christy ain’t looking (*g*).
Of course Republicans don’t believe in nation-building. Their specialty is nation-destroying.
Scarecrow – thank you … dialing Durbin’s office now.
Posture — for what its worth, I did check and you and ‘Eric’ are using different IP addresses so you are likely 2 different people (or else a very good spoofer). The wingnuts attack this major blog — they are easy to spot. The LieberTrolls are a new phenomenon but will be deflated after August 8th.
DC makes me dizzy as a witch. Daily.
Anne — I agree re the irony. But we have to trust the moderators to exercise judgment. Those who are serious will hang in there and learn the rules, which are not always obvious. Being a bit slow on this sort of thing, I’m sometimes surprised I lasted.
Laura Rozen has a piece up from WP’s Reliable SOurce re: Rove (and Albright – figure the odds) showing up for Jury Duty together.
Of ROve:
Said another juror: “Somehow I thought his next court appearance would be less mundane.”
U.S. spokesman, Maj. Gen. William Caldwell tells reporters today that: “Clearly Baghdad is the center that everyone is fighting for. We will do whatever it takes…” These guys are lucky to just hold the “green-zone”.
First Bush tells us that it’s the whole Middle East that’s at stake. Then just Iraq. And now it’s only Baghdad they’re hoping to hold on to. Brother! And sister! Talk about lowered expectations. Just who, and what do these clowns in the White House and Congress think we are, anyway. We did not just fall off some turnip truck out on tobacco road somewhere.
#186: I feel so exposed. I usually don’t let people look at my IP until we’ve at least had dinner.
Danton at 171,
Mighty close to an actual spew here.
Refused on account of grammar :)
This just in: Mary causes lotus’s first 707 of Tuesday!
lotus – thanks for asking…it’s kinda so-so. Still at the point where it could go either way. I’ve been working all day without the overhead lights on – just the over-the-desk ones that don’t shoot glare into my eyes. That helps. But almost time to leave and the sun is beaming brightly.
As for your sweet offer…it’s been a while since I’ve partaken – no telling what the results would be!
Posture brings on lotus’s second!
Gawrsh, that was fast. Need them throe-pillows.
Anne at 1:10 with all due respect and imo, eric relegated himself by not responding.
FDL comments in an earlier iteration were imo much more virulent and didn’t have nearly the consistency or quality of current threads. A lot of anti-semitism, some homophobia, more sexism, and a lot of gratuitous killshots at Jane and Christy ((then ReddHedd), who did all the blogging, 7 days a week between the two of them.)
An “anything goes” attitude imo serves no one well. The sooner we ask and clarify, the better the communication tends to be. We have lost some great posters imo, Karen Allen and Valley Girl, because we all feel passionately about these issues. IMO, the better we communicate, the less that is likely to happen.
With that said, we also have to be vigilant to not discourage dissent. As long as it is respectful and civil, I don’t think anyone does, but your comment is a good reminder of how vital that is too.
Okla-kiddo — in case you missed it, Glen Greenwald has a sobering post on the dire conditions in Baghdad.
http://glenngreenwald.blogspot…..html#links
OK Kiddo: they are literally drawing down troops from all over Iraq to hold Baghdad. I also recall additional troops are coming in from Kuwait and troops are being held on a stop-loss to augment the force. The Israeli aggression on Lebanon is really pissing off the majority Shia of Baghdad … I bet the US is hunkering down bigtime in the Green Zone.
ilson46201:
You’ve made my point. Why is it impossible for you to believe that i’m concerned that the level of maturity here is going to work against an effort to unseat Joe Lieberman? Thanks for assuming any constructive criticism makes me a “LieberTroll.” That’s a cute term…voters are really going to go for that. [And now that makes two comments in my “alleged” 6 months of reading here]
Egregious,
Republicans believe in “nation bilking”. They do a damn fine job at that I might add.
-GSD
Why is it that Jane’s posts don’t show a “refresh comment” button and Christy’s do?
And when are we going to address the other pink elephant in the room? Jane has poodles and *ilson has pit bulls. WTF?
Posture at 1:13, thanks.
I hope FDL provides you with as many great experiences and insights as it has given me.
We need all the help we can get.
Oklahoma Kiddo @ 190
To those of us in the reality-based Plane, it’s pretty obvious that Iraq has devolved into complete, open civil war. My only hope is that our troops get out of there soon enough that it isn’t a bloodbath for them.
Posture at 191, lol.
You know, Anne, I can’t believe it, but when I sense a “visual migraine” (purple splotches in one side or the other’s visual field) coming on, NOW all I have to do is take a couple of grocery-store “Migraine Relief” caplets (250 mg acetamenophen, 250 mg aspirin, and 65 mg caffeine apiece) — and dang if, within 20 minutes, no more problem.
Sure as hell wish I knew where these li’l babies have been all my life!
John Casper — I agree with your basic point. The problem new folks have is that the rules most of us take for granted aren’t all laid out somewhere. One has to learn the etiquette over time. some are obvious: e.g., dont insult anyone. There are unspoken rules here that are different from rules elsewhere. What’s permissible wrt dissent here is not permissible on other blogs, and vice versa, and one only learns these differences over time. But basic civility and mutual respect, even in disagreement, carry you a long way. And never, never attack the hostesses.
I’ve been here for like, forever, but I’ve never posted a lot, so I’m sure not everybody recognizes me. So, whenever I write a comment, I read it and read it, and read it again. Because not only is it easy to sound like a troll, it’s also easy to offend somebody you had no intention of offending.
FWIW, John Casper, you were my early posting model. Hopefully, I’ve absorbed some of the care and civility with which you post.
Now if only I could master *ilsons deft snark.

Nation-bilking. Oh that’s good.
Permission to use in some future rant? Would you like credit if I do?
jane-happy bday!
now explain the burberrry hat to me.
is burberry still the stylin thing?
3 years ago i glued burberry fabric onto one of my favorite gangsta students timberlake(tims) boots.
he was a model of fashion then.
should we all run out and buy the hat?
the klan has their pointy hood. maybe we should have a hat!
if not the burberry, certainly the tinfoil.
Durbin had a mini presser this morning and I saw a clip on one of the networks… I was agape as I heard him speak of this; he happens to be one of my favorites and I just cannot believe it.

Hey eric,
You got no clue who *ilson is. He can ban your sorry ass in a hearbeat, but he’s probably laughing too hard from your latest.
If you think we’re doing something to hurt Ned’s campaign, get specific or go back to lurking.
You’ve had some quality people stand up for your right to disagree. Bring it.
“Thanks for assuming any constructive criticism….”
I don’t see any criticism at all, constructive or otherwise. Quote a commenter or a poster. Find a link and comment that. Be specific or all you do is prove how right *ilson was and how we shouldn’t waste any more time reading your prattle.
Since you’re not a troll, make a $50 donation via paypal. Once we get confirmation of your donation, I’ll be less unconvinced.
eric – The reason the snark on this blog is not “going to work against an effort to unseat Joe Lieberman” is because this race is not driven by this blog.

Hap, Hap, Happy Birthday to the Jane Hamsher of the left !!
look at me, sneak blogging from work – how cool is that to see y’all in the middle of the day
wulfie about to cover the democratic sham, shame, flim flam– or whatever.
in his upcoming segment.
JWR — I am surpringly deeply touched by your compliment about my ‘deft snark’ … it is always a good thing to bring a smile to people in these perilous and parlous times.
eric–
In defense of our ‘immaturity’ we are relatively powerless. We do have the power to ridicule, and we’ve gotten pretty far with it.
Surely over the last 6 months of your reading you must have picked up that we are extremely serious about this race, and about the fate of our nation.
WOW! is that cool or what?!Awesome . Thanks Darkblack!
siun, angie — yeah the Durbin think is disappointing. These guys must be under tremendous pressure. siun, did you get thru to his office?
Just off the phone with Durbin’s staffer for the Middle East named Dan. Dan said that Durbin was upset by “some comments” made by “some members of the Iraqi government” but was pretty unclear as to why this letter was written or what it was supposed to accomplish. They did not have a statement prepared or a real position to spout though I opened by asking about the thinking behind this letter and asked what they were aiming at.
I suggested (well, ok, ranted)that this attack on Maliki would undermine any tiny shread of chance for a government, that Maliki was not exactly in a position to criticize Hizbollah, that given that every country except UK, US and Israel is supporting a ceasefire, attacking Maliki was beyond absurd and mentioned that american soldiers would become even more the target thanks to this gratuitous groveling to AIPAC.
the usual “we’ll convey your thoughts to the senator” ended the call
Thanks very much JWR.
As always scarecrow, appreciate the wisdom you always bring.
Egrege..
I am very liberal about my lifting policy. If something is funny or true and can be used, please pass it on. If you can attribute, huzzah, if not, heh.

Burbury WITH tinfoil.
You have got to check out this picture.
It is of Lieberman with Matthew Lesko. Lesko is that crazy late-night infomercial guy with a suit covered with question marks, waving around sacks of cash while hawking his books about how to get free money from government. It is from this site about plagiarists.
JWR @ 1:31
Mr. Casper just demonstrated another posting model to admire.
Thanks siun. I am suprised he showed up on teevee then, if he did not feel all that strongly about it.
hmmmmmm.
egregious– are you implying Jane was wearing a tinfoil hat under the bb hat? heavens! Brooks was right!
cbl–
Bad girl! (giggle!)
scarecrow – what bothered me in my call to the office is that even though I spoke to the Durbin staffer in charge of ME issues, he was barely able to state why Durbin was doing this … there was no clear policy or position, just “some people” said “some things” and finally, when asked for more info on why this was needed “Maliki was not willing to condemn Hizbollah” …
I had come to like Durbin after my visit to his staff here and some of his recent work but this is a horror … and seemingly not even carefully thought out.
as far as maturity goes, I get the impression that few regulars here are under 30 years old … true, some of us may be advanced in chronological years but that doesnt necessarily mean we have ever really ‘grown up’ — a child-like wonder at the world is too precious to ever lose…
Doesn’t Reid have a wesite and/or blog? He needs to hear from us, as does Barney Frank. What does Barney understand about a nation state (Iraq) have the freedom to speak out as they want. Are we a dictator? Barney? Tell me you don’t want us to be a dictator to Iraq telling them what to do, now do we?
John Casper and others – I’m a big fan of civility, and try to practice it as much as I can. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has banged out something pretty hard-hitting, taken a step back and self-edited and re-worked it for tone and attitude. My dad always said, “It’s not always what you say, but how you say it.” I hated hearing that, but have said it to my own kids.
We all have different levels of tolerance, and those of us who have “special powers” have differing approaches to moderation, especially when dealing with people who may not “know” these so-called rules that have evolved over time. I’m not real big on appending critique to comments that may unfairly shame or ridicule someone in such a public way, when I also have the ability to say the same thing in a comment under my own name. It’s just not my style. Things tend to perk along better, in my opinion, when the judgment calls are made “behind the curtain.” I don’t think anyone here is shy about calling out someone who is jerking us around. Like squabbling siblings, sometimes it works just fine to let things play out, unless it’s truly getting out of hand. Like I said – different style, same goal.
Oh – and lotus – Excedrin often works well for me – but sometimes not. This is one of those in-between days, I guess. It’s helped a little, but not enough.
JWR @ 216 gets it; if Eric is truly a regular reader and has been paying attention, he’d already know this.
Besides, what was done to Spazeboy and Jane on Lieberman’s behalf is what counts as “immaturity” in my book. Having some fun at the expense of the yahoos that did these things rather than pouting about it is the action that gets maturity cred, truth be told.
Pelosi piling on now and calls it inappropriate to honor him with a joint meeting of congress.
^%&*()_)*&%$#@@#^*(*!
via raw story:
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has blasted a joint meeting of Congress tomorrow, set to be addressed by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.
“Iraqi Prime Minister’s Maliki’s criticism of Israel’s right to defend itself is unacceptable,” Pelosi said in a statement.
“At the White House this morning, Mr. Maliki did not retreat from his comments on Israel and once again failed to criticize Hamas and Hezbollah’s terrorist activities.
“Unless Mr. Maliki disavows his critical comments of Israel and condemns terrorism, it is inappropriate to honor him with a joint meeting of Congress.”
OT – re: Sunday’s thread about national parks.
Global warming puts 12 US parks at risk: report
Yep … Pelosi joining in with an official statement.
These folks have stood for nothing for so long and suddenly the AIPAC steroids kick in and they are sooo tough. Bullies … the lot of them!
And thanks Siun for your call to Durbin. Not well thought out is the understatement and SOOOO like dem leadership. And D.C. dems in general. Let’s see, criticising a foreign government not well thought out — yup, dem foreign policy in action.
I have to be quiet for awhile. I am really getting hot under the collar. At least my worthless Dayton did not sign.
Stephen at 208 – it is not one of his better-known works, but I like it (obviously). IIRC, I chose it as much for its colors as for the particular subject matter.
Bustednuckles 138
People would buy that tshirt. I have a couple that say “Got Democracy?”
Anne, I mentioned this a while back, don’t know if you saw it. Wrt Migraines. There is a new product out called Head On. Looks like a deoderant stick and you rub it on your forehead. Might try it.
I just hope Pelosi and others point out that Maliki is a reactionary fascist thug and hardly a Vaclav Havel of the Middle East. Bush and Negroponte have found a dictator for Iraq (strongman) who cant really do the job.
Bush and Cheney fucked it all up bigtime and putting up a facade of democracy on that maelstrom of civil war aint reality!
I don’t really know what is going on with the Durbin et al statements, but I’m viewing them with a couple of things in mind.
1. Sadr is reportedly sending militia to Lebanon. I can see where pretty much everyone would welcome anything that might keep that from happening. Unfortunately, it seems to just shoot Maliki in the foot further to posture it the way the Dems are – but there might be some other or further strategy.
2. Apparently the American public needs/wants some “event” to “make it ok” to withdraw troops. We need to be gone. On so many fronts and levels, I won’t even start. But if there is never going to be a “winning” moment; and if people need a “reason” to leave – I’d even be ok with resolutions to withdraw based on Iraq’s failure to condem Hezbollah. I’m that morally ambivalent by now.
I don’t really think or know that those things have any component, but fwiw.
Leslie in CA says: “…I chose it as much for its colors as for the particular subject matter.”

You made a fine choice.
Lieberman’s campaign responds to The Spazeboy Incident:
Ah, the GOP “security” canard. Joe Lieberman is a crybaby whiner and a disgrace to the party. Democracy is about people participation. What a wanker.
I am sure Malicki is a thug — Cheney needed a strongman exactly like Saddam to put the country together again (by putting down anyone he wants) but would be ‘friendly’ to having American troops on their soil permanently. With oil flowing through American companies.
Is it only the dems speaking out against Malicki? Aren’t the repubicans saying the same thing? curious.
is Maliki’s ‘democracy’ worth the continuing deaths of U.S. troops? The man wont even shake Condi’s hand because she’s a female.
angie — As far as I can figure out, the only possible “benefit” from the Dem attacks on Maliki is that it may strengthen his image of independence at home (Iraq), if he doesn’t back down, which may help him hold the impossible coalition together a little longer, based on common opposition to the US/Israel. But I doubt the Dem’s are doing this for that reason. It just appears to be shameless demogoguery, and how it helps anything positive is unclear.
1,220 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…
Eric,
Come on ,boy, you ken tell us the truth, you are, in fact, a Lamont campaign cartoon aren’t you? If not, give yerself a thrill….wiggle yer ears and tickle yer prostate. The folks here enjoy a good laugh at the expense of Lieberbots too much to jest tell you what a joke you are.
KEEP THE FAITH AND TURN ON THE FLASHLIGHT BEFORE YA RUN INTO THAT HEMORRHOID!!
Bustedknuckles – I’ve seen “Head On” advertised, and keep meaning to look for it to see what it’s all about. Thanks for the reminder (you’d think the headache would have benn reminder enough!).
Tomorrow will be a better day (it could be that the weather is changing – that often triggers these things – like having my own internal barometer).
*ilson at 1:36 pm – Before we get EPU’d, you do indeed bring much needed smiles, and your work behind the scenes is always appreciated.
OT but did you see this about that little Friedman boy?
Um-meee.
They must have ran Jane’s SS#.
Puppethead — 2000 tickets were issued — isnt it truly amazing that a staffer went through that entire list looking for known troublemakers and knew that Spazeboy wasnt on that list?
Speaking of EPU territory…

:-)
Stephen- I’ve taken to reading Colin McEnroe’s blog. I thought of you back when I read this:
http://blogs.courant.com/colin…..uds_o.html
Mighty Clouds of Blogs
[]Last night, the sunset was full of the kind of plump, pink-edged, finely scalloped clouds that Maxfield Parrish made famous, if you can make clouds famous….(and then talks about Lieberman Lamont…)
Digby’s with you, angie-scarecrow-lotus etc.
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/
I’m just not really sure how the juggling is going on this one.
PS – Digby does have a great link to MmmmPeachMint Tea.
puppethead — this is great news. It means the mugging of Spazeboy and Jane is now a “story,” and it will keep going. Spazeboy of course used his real name and real SS#, I suspect, and jane would have done the same thing. The next “story” will be showing the Lieberlstatement was a Lieberlie, and it will just keep snowballing.
Brilliant.
concerning the Democratic leadership and Maliki — Dr. King was fond of quoting “tis the greatest treason to do the right thing for the wrong reason.” Bashing Maliki because he’s no admirer of Israel is wrong but if it reveals that Bush’s beloved “purple-thumb democracy” is a sham and a fraud and hardly worth continuing US troops and treasure, good for them!
OT -CNN – senior hezbollah leader killed. UN observer group hit by israeli fire, 4 dead.
Fitz speaks to prosecutors at Northwestern University Law School
http://abclocal.go.com/wls/sto…..id=4396427
GrandmaJ – the repubs are saying the dems are just playing politics on this.
And the Dems are not critiquing Maliki as a thug, they are only upset he won’t condemn Hizbollah and support Israel.
Anyone know how much the White Phosphorous Pac contributes?
I think it’s possible that Reid, Durbin et al. are actually doing something fairly clever in a Machiavellian sort of way. Consider the following: during the Senate debate over setting a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq, Democrats were repeatedly painted as “pro-terrorist” if they were against the war, or even against anything but “stay the course.” Now Maliki and his government have condemned Israel and at least implicitly supported Hezbollah. That’s not surprising, given that the Iraqi Shia religious parties are at least as close to Iran as Hezbollah is, but that inconvenient truth has been glossed over by Bushco. But if the Maliki government supports Hezbollah, then it is “pro-terrorist.” That in turn means that “staying the course” is also pro-terrorist, and wanting to get the hell out of Iraq is the patriotic, anti-terrorist thing to do. Forget about the fact that Israel is not behaving well, to put it mildly (and I think many of us would put it much more strongly than that), and think about the beauty of hoisting the Bush administration on its own petard.
I’ve got this niggly feeling that there’s something in this dem/maliki thing that’s still sitting at the bottom of the lake. August is dog days (just around the corner) so maybe when the lake turns over, it will come to the surface.
Spazeboy reminds me of an old High School boyfriend.
(We’re talkin’ well over 40 years ago folks.)
Lookie what I found on C-Span!
Call-In Surveillance Programs
C-SPAN, Washington Journal
07/26/2006 9AM Eastern
Gonzales, Alberto R.
Attorney General, Department of Justice
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales talks about the electronic surveillance program and proposed changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
Won’t that be fun? I wonder how many FDLer’s will get through, hee, hee. If you have some time tomorrow morning this would be a golden chance to pin down Abu Gonzales, since Congress hasn’t.
BarbB – that was kind of what I was mulling, but without any of the clarity you presented.
The thing is, there are all kinds of backfires, including the fact that EU nations are even condemning Israel for its disproportionate response. Such a sad mess.
PS – don’t know if you saw it but back thread PJEvans had a sad link to the funding issues with USAttys offices nationwide (although I guess if we are abandoning law as the preferred response mechanism maybe there’s method in the madness /snark).
Spazeboy’s kinda cute.
Jane and Spazeboy, you rock. Loved the video clip and your determined efforts to practice democracy in CT.
GO NED!!
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/7/25/143511/471
It’s on the Kos recommended list now. I’ll post this over there as an update.
Oh c’mon … the dems are not suddenly playing subtle political policy tricks here …
And their willingness to all sign on to the statement last week in support of Israel does not suggest a nuanced policy at play.
siun — a surpring NO vote on the Israel Uber Alles resolution was John Dingell of Michigan – but he has a large Arabic constituency. Conyers also voted NO.
*ilson – thanks! Dingell and Conyers know what standing up means.
This is really maddening … and so dangerous.
4 UN observers killed by those great pinpoint Israeli bombs …
Thanks, Mary. I was composing while you were posting, or I would have just embroidered your remarks. And Siun, it is possible to be knee-jerk pro-Israel, as most of Congress is, and still use that to political advantage. For that matter, even those of us (most of us, anyway) who are against this particular Israeli response condemn Hezbollah too.
Back to Mary, I missed the news about the US Attys offices. I’ve been busy during the day and forced to skim threads to catch up. Do you suppose it’s like defunding the IRS auditors who look at estate and gift tax returns? What part of the USC does Bushco not want enforced?
I’m probably EPU’d but somebody asked if Reid has a blog or Web site. Here it is:
http://giveemhellharry.com
You can even start your own blog there if you don’t mind registering.
Jane, honey, you are so hawt :o)
jane, lieberman’s campaign can justify booting spazeboy out because it wasn’t “his” ticket, but what about your ticket? did you register your name & address & social & first born to get in?
if you did, it would give lie to lieberman’s position.
My God, a Burberry fishing hat. How bourgeois. You would be right at home in New Labor.
The Lamont/Lieberman race is a race for the “heart and soul” of the Democratic Party.
We Progressive Democrats, have to be ready and willing to strongly SUPPORT Joe Lieberman if he wins the Primary. (God knows I have had to hold my nose since my Senator, Ken Salazar, was elected).
However, we will be watching Joe, and the Democratic “leadership” very closely. It will tear the party apart if Lieberman loses the Primary, and runs as an independent, WITH the support of party leaders like Nancy Pelosi
I am a proud Democrat, but, I will leave the party in a heartbeat if it abandon’s its support for “small-d” democratic values.
To follow up on 249–I think we should do more than opine, (like the opine-er) and that Bill Clinton should be bombarded with phone calls about this. How two Democrats came to see him, and were barred —why? Because they support *another Democrat*! Take Bill Clinton to task for the thuggish behavior of his pal and remind him that treating fellow Democrats this way is no way to enthuse young voters into voting for Billary. Call his offices in Harlem. Call Hillary too and complain about how Bill allowed Democrats to be ejected. It’s really infuriating.
Couldn’t find Clinton’s Harlem contact info , though some one with more connections probably can do this easily. But here is his Foundation contact.
http://www.clintonfoundation.org,
Click on “contact us’ and send your email of dismay, as I just did.
Jane, you’re damn cute, but Spazeboy is HOT!! Geez!! Who knew bloggers were drop-dead gorgeous?
Thanks for the video, thanks for the radio link.
Since I live 6 hrs later than EDT, I got to hear it on the pc at work just before my shift ended. I think he did just fine.
I didn’t think much of the radio moderator—all those ’stoopid’ questions about big bad bloggers (the good ones check their facts, like you all do…and unlike you are the spew who babble whatever comes into their pin heads and try to be ‘entertaining’ and who can even make a living from their little stream-of-consciousness mock ’serious’ diaharrea. Sp? too tired to google.)
I remember an America where you could discuss anything anywhere, and it was ok, because that was what it was supposed to be about. Even if it got passionate. But even then people were open to ‘learning’. And conceding there might be ’something’ to an opposite point of view–engage brain, think ‘well, that’s something I never considered’. I miss it muchly.
I’ve been gone from there a long time.
‘Free Speech Zones’ creep me out big time. Having to give your Social Security number to get into a public event, and on and on… I’d have punched that thug out and called the police—
And regarding that—WHAT are they collecting SS numbers for if they aren’t running them through computer banks, and what ELSE are they doing with them???? Ever think of THAT???? Isn’t that against the law???? It should be.
Mrs Hardin Smith, help me on this one, why isn’t there a huge outcry???? Or is giving your Social Security number some sort of routine thing now, like ‘name, rank, serial number?
That number used to be like your pin number for your ATM or credit card now. Would you give THAT so some thug on the street or yell it out loud to the person behind you when you pick up a little cash? (And from the depictions, they ARE thugs.) Why not just leave the door of your car unlocked, and some high tech stuff on the back seat while you go to the Mall? Isn’t that the same? I must have missed a lot of stuff since I left, but sorry, I do NOT understand it at all.
Be very careful, hey. Unthinkable in my past. Oh, we had our run-ins with authority, but NOTHING like what you described.
Worst thing was getting pulled over on the highway during the student strike of 1969 and a lot of macho threatening posturing from the State Police, and we showed some ID but they had to let us go, and we got to go to the demo anyway. Or getting arrested and stuck in the armory trying to stop Seabrook, but nothing like NY recently.
And we liked to think we were moving something, so be warned. They used to get ornery and a little scary back then if they felt ‘threatened’, but that was all. Now you are really putting it on the line, and those- that-be aren’t going to like it one bit. Your posts on Senator Boxer proved that. Someone should take a look into that womans’ finances, just a suggestion….
I like that courage of your conviction. Good for you. The higher Lamont’s numbers go up, the more you better organise what you want to do next. But be careful, they might get ugly, and I wouldn’t want anything untoward to happen.
It all chills me,
Which is sort of nice in one way during our current ‘heat wave’ where it goes up as high as 42 degrees in the sun lately and stays humid–in northern Europe, but what the hell, no global warming, nope.
(So what if the glaciers here are melting???? More water for the lawns, hey…. A couple of major floods? Rebuild right back on the river bank and watch your insurance go up, and freak when it happens again two years later and all the re-building was for nothing…. Tornadoes where there never used to be any at all except maybe every couple of hundred years? Ooooh, where’s Dorothy???? Maybe my BRAIN is melting, after all I did water the garden and got wet… /snark…)
But it chills me in another way too. And it ain’t good.
The past two years I’m in culture shock thanks to the Internets–or is it the Tubes?–I get so confused… I hardly recognise anything I used to know about where I grew up.
Unless I come here to FDL. And then I get a little spark of hope.
I think you’re all doing some wonderful things.
Thanks again. Spazeboy did fine. And sorry to be so long in this post, lot of worrying about things going on in the world, and thanks to globalisation, we get to SHARE all of it with you. Sorry, but it gets frightening. Am gonna have to re-organise my priority index, or is it filofax? I know I misplaced it somewhere in the Nineties….
Late here, heat exhaustion, so just move along, nothing to see….
Hugs for everyone… Keep up the good work, and be careful!
Joe Lieberman scores another victory against the blogofascists!
Just one last thought….
Did anyone ever try to Google where people end up after they end their political careers?
(Apropos Clinton suddenly turning up and supporting L. What did he owe him? was my first thought….) It might be very interesting… you might find out who bought them. (This apropos snippets you read here and there….) Interesting… Try it, somebody, I have a feeling there might be a gold mine there… I just never get the time.
I didn’t realize Jane was turning 19 today. At least that’s how she looks. WOW! Oh yea, great job with the blogging, etc. ;)
