From Holy Joe’s speech yesterday :
"I looked around the hall, and it seems to me that my opponent in the Democratic primary has not made it here tonight," Lieberman said. "But I tell you, if he were here, he’d be a bit confused because of the company I am keeping up on this stage."
Ned Lamont was not invited to the event.
Conspicuously absent from the stage were Dannel P. Malloy and John DeStefano Jr., the two mayors competing for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination on Aug. 8. Neither can afford to offend Lamont’s supporters.
One DeStefano supporter said of the New Haven mayor’s absence, "There is zero upside to be on that stage." Malloy did arrive late, but stayed off the stage, one campaign aide said.
No shit.
Left unsaid by all speakers was that Lieberman is hedging his bets: As he campaigns for the Democratic nomination, he also is circulating petitions to run as an independent in November, should he lose the primary.
Except there is no evidence that Lieberman is publicly circulating petitions. Is he getting party pressure to stop splitting the party and abandon the indy run, or is the prospect of doing so just too humiliating, hopeless and embarassing? As Digby notes, this is a guy who at one point thought he could secure both the Democratic and Republican slots on the ticket.
The dissociation from reality is staggaring.

Happy Birthday Jane.
M=VG.
Now I really have to go.
ned! maura! fitz! punaise! jane’s hat! dr. bong! doobage! *ilson! ccmask! CTBob! Mr. Reddhedd! oilfield egregious mommy! spazeKurt! thundergetyaDoverBitch! little dog! DavidE, BobbyG! Teddy! Valley Girl, yes! etc etc! avalanche brilliant people words 24/7!
Jane: You are doing one hella job! I am so proud of you…and a little jealous with the company you keep.
do you ever wonder where Christ Matthews gets the nut cases he has on his show? Is there a master list of the freakiest talking heads available?
oh, sharkbabe! you rock!
Take it to ‘em…
Happy b-day, Jane — hope your birthday wish is granted!
jane’s hat
Wasn’t there supposed to be a Columbo trench coat to go with it. *g*
wonderful ‘icky’ graphic!
Joe = political plutonium. Get a clue dems, including you Clinton scamps – there’s a new world comin –
[st. mama cass] and it’s just around the bend
there’s a new world comin
this one’s coming to an end
there’s a new voice calling
you can hear it if you try
and it’s growing stronger
with each day that’s passing by
there’s a new world coming
rising clear and sweet and free
there’s a new day dawning
that belongs to you and me…
(dedicated to the fearless kickass Maura)
Happy Birthday Jane. Love the graphic.
Soon on the Home Shopping Network, The Joe Lieberman Rape Gurney!
two weeks to go until the election — Joe would be using professional petitioners and they could make an informed estimate of the very last date that a very large petitioning staff could gather the 7500 plus 50% signatures. If it becomes public now about the petitioning, it hits the news and bubbles until election day. if he puts it off til the very last minute, the news wont be so widespread — still, the shock of that news might be greater to voters that close to the Primary Day.
Hey birthday girl!! Do we get to know your age? My birthday is the 31st, will be 55. It’s always fun to tell people this because the reaction is shock. I’ve got a little kid impish look on my face that belies the years.
Just finished listening to spazeboy’s interview with Colin McEnroe. The scene with him in the restaurant, with Shortride’s book, waiting to talk to the candidate—and succeeding, reminds me of a Pach moment.
Pach was seemingly an ordinary commenter (ha!) until he offered to put on scary looking professional duds and go into DC to obtain a copy of a legal document in the Plame case. After that everything was different. He became a star.
I think that brave act by spazeboy in the restaurant was his moment where everything changed. Too bad he doesn’t see himself as a public figure, because he has the right stuff, just like our Pach. The radio interview was great, lotsa good points scored.
Hope you saw that Valley Girl is back!!!! See in the early hundreds previous thread.
Joe = political plutonium.
Nukuleiberman?
Joeranium?
I just hope that when this is all said and done, if Lamont wins and Lieberman concedes, everyone doesn’t start getting all lovey-dovey with Lieberman and say he is a great statesman or a decent guy or has good “values”.
None of the above is an accurate description. The man has aided and abetted the death of thousands of American troops and Iraqi civilians in a needless and counterproductive war, while simultaneously acceding to the wishes of the Bush administration on everything from unconstituational wiretapping to the appointment of extremist supreme court justices.
Joe’s political epitaph, whenever it was written, will read: here lies a man who willfully crossed party lines to lend his support to the worst and most dangerous president in the history of the United States.
Sorry, make that *depleted* Joeranium.
And once again, Happy Birthday, Jane!
Except there is no evidence that Lieberman is publicly circulating petitions—
Does this mean he is doing it privately, or not circulating petitions? Forgot, but how many sigs does he have to have?
I looked around the hall, and it seems to me that my opponent in the Democratic primary has not made it here tonight,” Lieberman said. “But I tell you, if he were here, he’d be a bit confused because of the company I am keeping up on this stage.
God, what a stupid thing to say.
It just now strikes me: HoJo is like the married man who’s been having a long-term affair, and his wife knows all about it but keeps quiet. She’s got her reasons, and he thinks it’s because she l u v s him. He grows bolder, is seen in public with the other woman, and one day decides it would be a fine thing if he just brought her home.
He is stunned to discover his wife has other plans.
It kinda looks like the little guy in the basket on the left is fixin’ to bail… Going somewhere jojo?
Lamont slogan: Why vote for Joe at all? He’s just going to ignore you again and run against your Party!
hey, jane, happy bday. you got email, but maybe you can answer here…did you have your own ticket for the clinton speech, or, like spazeboy, did you get your ticket from someone else?
if it was your ticket, it would give lie to the official lieberman position that spazeboy was booted because his “name wasn’t on the list.”
and hey punaise – sorry to leave you inquiring quietly last thread – during the day I can mostly only fitz & run but try to grab all fdl reading I can – also ever more paranoid posting from govt agency, even my relatively enlightened library of congress
anyway I always loved this one – my friend Nancy got so weary of dyke heartbreak she married Michael – we all refer to her as a hasbian
Now that the Courant’s closed its BigDawg poll, here’s the outcome:
Tri-partite bummer for those three old friends.
8.7% Yes (128 responses)
20.2% No, it makes no difference (297 responses)
71.1% No, it makes me less likely to vote for Lieberman (1045 responses
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
egregious @ 16 –
My birthday was on the 10th. I turned 53, and I love to tell people my age too.
About spazeboy: Isn’t it fun to discover a star before the rest of the world? That young man is a phenomenon, whether he knows it or not. It will be such a joy and a pleasure to see what he does in this world!
Eli at 17
Joeranium, I think that’s a flower.
Joeranium, I think that’s a flower.
That one that blooms every six years and smells like rotten meat?
oh, and Eli!
I believe someone owes ballons an apology.
Ha fucking ha Joe, nice poll results. Now don’t go away angry, just go away.
What? What’d I do?
TRex!
And Your Little Taylor Marsh Too!
Sharkie, if there was anybody I hated to see miss out on our doobage this morning, hon . . .
What? What’d I do?
oh please. must we go back to frank lloyd wright false modesty 101?
Happy B-Day!
I’m the 11th….July babies Rock!
lotus – I know you’re just truly, sincerely broken up over it :)
oh please. must we go back to frank lloyd wright false modesty 101?
I’m far too modest to resort to false modesty.
Poor Senator Lieberman. He’s almost a buffoon. I really am at a loss to see where he’s been a particular credit to the Democratic party. He has no creds as a Dem. Why can’t he just fade away into lobbydom or think-tankdom? His support for the Bush Iraq War is damning. His threat to run as an independent is selfish. His lack of class is unforgivable. The Bush-Lieberman foreign policy doctrine is a complete failure. Lieberman is as culpable as Bush for setting fire to the Middle East.
I’ve said this on various comments over the last weeks, and in a dkos diary some time ago: I don’t think Liberman really has decided to run as an independent. He is either a) just pretending, in order to pressure primary voters to vote for him, and to pressure the party to work for him or b) he honestly hasn’t made up his mind yet, because he knows what kind of hige (mis)step it would actually be to do it (as opposed to say you’re gonna do it).
If he had to pledge, privately, not to go indy in order to get help from Bill Clinton and Boxer, he may have thought it a decent deal, given his reluctance, and how bad the indie thing has been perceived.
Also: remember how Dodd wouldn’t answer “The Question” because doing so would take the pressure off CT primary voters.
In other words: The fix in already, fear not, there is no reason to vote Lamont only to avoid a three-way race.
shooogarp — happy B day to you too!
i saw just a short clip of clinton at joe’s event yesterday, and as he left the podium it looked like joe tried to plant one on his cheek. maybe he thinks he can diminish the damage of “the kiss” if he just puckers up to every president. i also noticed that clinton did not embrace him in return, which i thought was interesting since clinton is known to be such a great hugger. maybe bill isn’t as “forgive and forget” as leiberman’s people have tried to say he is.
egregious 16, I remember that moment. It was indeed fabulous.
Eli, I think depleted Joeranium is a winner.
Sharkbabe 26 (I never get Sharkbabed – *sigh*), I love hasbian! Gonna send that to my (nowsbian?) cousins.

Dykes have drama? Shhh-can you keep it on the low? It might spoil my recruitment efforts.
Hello, from Weston, W. VA
They say the best way to tell a womans age is from a distance, and I’m still a long ways from CT. Happy Birthday Jane. Hopefully I can visit with Christy on Thursday. What’s this about no evidence of petition circulating for Joe? Will he or won’t he? Is the question still viable? This is the first I’ve heard of this.
If you want to see how local papers played the story of Clinton’s visit,
http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/
If you’re not familiar, they post front pages of every paper that will provide them every day, alphabetical by state, then alpha by paper name. International are after US
For all you news junkies, they also archive front pages of huge news stories such as 9/11, Katrina (many days), war in iraq (same), London and Madrid bombings, and yes, the Red Sox finally winning the World Series.
It’s a great way to see how stories are playing — above or below the fold, size of image, etc.
There was this time in 1968 or so when to me everything felt like it was on the cusp of change, there was an electric *charge* in the air. (And no, not because of that, thank you.)
It’s starting to feel like that. Chills down the spine as I watch brave activists challenge the darkness. From my occasional lurking in between trucks and problems caused by the heat, it’s just thrilling! Thanks to Jane and all of you brave firepups.

You mean there is no reason to vote for *Lieberman* to avoid a three-way race, right?
Balloons powered by flatulence.
Happy biiirthday, shooogarp!
Sharkbabe – sorry I stepped on your toes Saturday (went a tad overboard re the f-bomb in Howie’s thread while the candidate was there). We good now?
OK kiddo – that’s as excellent/succinct as any reality-based lament gets.
Goodness, I forgot to say happy birthday, Jane!
Two big gasbags.
Hi there, OFG at 48 – just saw a show the other night that featured a house in Weston.
LindaR @ 29, I’ll be your age in October.
Is the graphic from the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta?
(From years ago in ABQ, I remember my little dog barking her head off as the balloon whoooshhhhed overhead. She couldn’t figure out where to run to head it off. So funny.)
LindaR re discovering stars–
Matt O. too. He’s going to be unbelievable. We knew him when.
The progressive side may not pay people properly [another rant, another day] but at least we can shower them with affirmation, affection, and respect.
1,200 dayz and the killin’ goez on and on and…
Sharkbabe:
Yer breakin’ my heart and rockin’ our world here gal….keep on keepin’ on.
KEEP THE FAITH AND FLUSH IT TWICE…IT’S A LONG WAY TA DLC HEADQUARTERS!!!
Thanks Eli & LindaR. I tricked my girlfriend on my birthday. She took me to a great restaurant here in Utah and I ambushed her by proposing. Shoulda seen the look on her face. Let’s just say it was a great birthday.
Norske,
You always make me either laugh or cry.
Sometimes both. Thanks for that.
I have mixed emotions about West Virginia. It is quite spectacular visually, but hauling superloads down tiny roads and over big hills is laborious.
It’s like watching my ex-wife drive off a cliff–in my brand new cadillac.
Sharkbabe!
Don’t I deserve a mention? *sniff*
shooogarp–
Hearty congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“It’s like watching my ex-wife drive off a cliff–in my brand new cadillac.”
Sounds like a Neil Young song…
i heart {{{{{neurophius}}}}}
Never jump the Sharkbabe! For you bubi :)
shooogarp – congratulations!
shooogarp — wow, congratulations!
Thanks for the props Sharkbabe. Hello Nefarious Leslie.
Wxyz 51:
Indeed I do mean that. Bad “typo”. No reason to vote _Lieberman_ to avoid a three-way race. It won’t happen, I predict, esp. after these two last days.
Congrats, shooogarp!! Happy wishes to you both!
It’s pretty hard to imagine that Joe could have people out there trying to get 7500 plus signatures and not ONE of them has said anything about it.
OT from a thing earlier today– The mysterious rethug candidate from Milbank’s column is Michael Steele as revealed by Brian on KO.
or the Clash:
Hope you have better luck than I did shooogarp.
Since my girlfriend (now soon to be wife) and I started dating, she has gone from Firewhowhat?, Flame/Plame?, Abrastroganof? to sitting me down the other night and asking what all my Firepup friends thought of Bush using his first veto on stemcell research.
Don’t underestimate all of our power here to change just ONE mind this election season.
punaise – we’re always good, even this or that bit ‘o weird or whatever
i’m just a ranter but you deal in such interesting funny stealth truth judo-flip things wordwise – you’re a constant unique treasure of this place
not to put any pressure or anything on future performance :)
1,200 DAYZ AND THE KILLIN’ GOEZ ON AND ON AND…

“Never jump the Sharkbabe” unless ya wanna wake up in last week…she ken bring it!!
KEEP THE FAITH, THEY’RE HARMLESS IN THE DAYLIGHT!!
For the birthday girl–
“Never let an inanimate object know you are in a hurry.”
McIntosh’s Corollary: “Unless it’s your car.”
Hearing about your highway race, I thought you would appreciate the corollary.
Congrats, shooo!
shooogarp, beautiful news, man! My daddy was born July 11, 19-ought-4, so I’ll have an easy time remembering yours next year (um, I hope).
Sharkbabe – LOL , so having your mouth washed out with soap didn’t leave a bad taste…
Could Lieberman’s people be waiting for election day, to catch their voters coming out of the polls and sign them up then?
Jane — we be having a big birthday bash on Aug 8, no? Now, a Lamont win would be a great present!
CT Bob and I are planning some great things for election day to keep you all feeling like you are here.
angie 76 — whaddy say?
woo hoo for shoo!
OT from a thing earlier today– The mysterious rethug candidate from Milbank’s column is Michael Steele as revealed by Brian on KO.
Wow. I was sure he had pure Kool-Aid coursing through his veins. Plus he’s not real bright, IIRC.
LindaR – I’m on my way to Roseville! See you soon.
shooogarp,
I’m workin’ my neighborhood. I’ve got a lot of promises and crap to vote, most I’m sure just say what they think I wanna hear. But I bet I get three to break my way. That was my original goal.
shooogarp–
Speaking on behalf of most of the women here, we would love to learn how you actually proposed, and how she reacted.
Sentimental attitude towards life and love, helps keep the political stuff in perspective.
bloviation is just the start, there’s also
–quintagulation (or some kind of over-angulation and angles into political backstabory)
–unethical and unconvincing misleadingism at rallies
–low caliber gotchatization that backfires,
–BigDog dependingtomuchonism,
–rampant can’tdefendhisrecordism that would kill a horse (let alone a Big Dog),
–creeping BushCoification of rallies
–meaningless votingrecord incredible-ism
–shifty standfornothingism.
I hope Lamont can make it. (note to self- $ to Lamont tonight).

As to your question What part of the USC does Bushco not want enforced?
Sounds like just Title 18.

Nefarious Leslie — I missed the name change! You Nefarious Leslie you. See ya soon!

He’s interviewing Dana and Dana says it was smart for him to ‘come out’ today and distance himself from the preznit on ’safe’ issues– Iraq mismgmt, Katrina while still siding with him on stem cell veto (grrrrrrrr) and other nonsense. I think Dana jest played along for the rethuglican with the mystery man column this morning only to have him ‘come out’ later.
but then, i am a rabid lamb.

Your luck is in the future. I have kind of a sixth sense about such things. [note large # of zero posts]
I dearly remember your hat in hand, one foot then the other, heart in pieces comment. You are the right man for someone very special. Lucky gal.

Sometimes I am wont to reflect on my heroes. I think at the top of my list (in my life time) would have to be a Jew and an Arab. Yitzhak Rabin and Anwar al-Sadat. What I would give to have these guys around today.

I was just reminded of a bit in the title “Bedlam dreaming of rain”… sorta describes Joe’s campaign tactics, so far…

And they *both* got assassinated. Targeted are the peacemakers.
I love it when the arrogant get taken down a peg or two. Even if Lieberschmuck eeks out a victory, it will have been worth it to see him have to scramble for once in his life.
Yitzhak Rabin and Anwar al-Sadat. What I would give to have these guys around today.
Oh amen.

‘Fraid we’re only at 1966. Lotsa bad stuff coming before we break through.
FIGHT BACK
Lieberman IS circulating petitions for his independent candidacy. During at a business meeting today, my husband was startled when an executive walked in with one and asked everyone to sign it. This was in Hartford. My husband is an outside consultant and declined, but everyone else there meekly signed.
Shoogarp – Congrats! what lovely news!
*ilson – what is the count that Joe needs for petitions? I’m suspecting they can round up the signatures without a public effort …
so stupid/hopeless to get into naming with exclamation point everyone i love and get thinking from here
but – angie!
and omg Marygoddess of splainin this and that at necessary length, but not a single wasted word
sheez, then there’s looseheadprop, Peterr – I give up – just goes on and on
I know, marksb and egregious — isn’t it weird?
Equally 1968 and 11 AM, Spetember 11, 2001, it feels like to me.
in case anybody missed it, “M” is the return of the former (?) Valley Girl. re-bienvenue!
in 2002 our Congresswoman was in a hot race but she still voted against the War on Iraq — she quickly put out a mass election piece with pictures of famous peacemakers and the simple slogan “Blessed are the peacemakers”. All the people pictured on it were assasinated except for Mother Theresa.
“I don’t think Liberman really has decided to run as an independent. He is either a) just pretending, in order to pressure primary voters to vote for him, and to pressure the party to work for him or b) he honestly hasn’t made up his mind yet, because he knows what kind of hige (mis)step it would actually be to do it (as opposed to say you’re gonna do it).”
I’m not sure where you are going with this. Before the debate with Ned, Joe said, he would not commit to supporting the winner of the Dem primary. Joe has never deviated from that. That decision caused MSNBC to broadcast their debate. It telegraphed that Joe understood how weak he was, something recent polls confirm.
It was also a big “Go Dick Cheney yourself” to the whole CT Dem party, because I’m bigger than all of you and oh btw all the Dem money you’re wasting on your meaningless primary. Absolutely nothing ties Joe to registered Dems in his mind, it’s as if they don’t exist. Worse, it’s forcing Dem candidates throughout CT to have to choose between pissing off Lieberman or the Dem party. This could really hurt Dem chances to take back the House. It has national repercussions for the party. If Joe gets away with it, so will others.
I understand that Joe may decide not to run as an indy if he loses huge in the primary and the numbers look bad in the general too, but the damage has already been done imo.
Joanne – now that is very interesting indeed!
no need for folks outside the supermarket when your corporate donors can do the work for you, eh? bravo for your husband!
twolf1 says
“OT – Veteran arrested for wearing Veterans For Peace shirt in a V.A. office.
http://www.selvesandothers.org…..tml”
WTF???? A veteran can’t silently express himself while hanging out in a V.A. facility? Or was the crime actually being a Veteran for Peace? (sounds treasonous, doesn’t it?) There is a federal case that says you can walk into a courthouse wearing a shirt that says “f**k the draft.” Do you sign away your right of free speech when you walk in the door of a V.A. hospital? This really makes me mad. I hope the guy sues.
sharkbabe stepped in blog-doo
Given BigDog’s kind words about decent, well-intentioned Ned, I’m now interested to know which was said first, Joe’s slur:
or since
Ned Lamont was not invited to the event
was Bill Clinton generously speaking of a Democratic challenger or simply trying to model appropriate behavior for RGJoe?

Joe needs 7500 certified good signatures so he’d better get a pad of at least 50% more …

Lotus – my little sister also has the b-day of July 11th, which is great for dueling cakes and all.
Egregious – Well, like I said. She took me to this great restaurant here in Utah called Log Haven for my birthday. Log Haven is this old lodge built in the 1930’s in Millcreek Canyon. I called ahead and arranged with the server to bring out the engagement ring after the main course, but before dessert. She brought it out on a simple small plate adorned with various wildflowers. The look on her face was priceless and it is something that I will always remember.
There was a large corporate group next to us that was fairly loud and when I got down on one knee and proposed the entire restaurant went silent. She said yes (thankfully) and we kissed. A few people clapped and for the rest of our meal the entire restaurant was very quiet. Very cool. It is hard to believe that it was me who pulled it off.
Anyway. She has this great four-year old daughter from a previous marriage that I am looking foward to adopting at some point in the future. Her wedding band consists of an engagement band and two wedding bands. One for my commitment to her and one for her daughter. We are getting married here in the Mountains of Utah in October “when all of the aspens are turning together” ; )
kirby@49: I had never been to that site. How cool is that?
“In a serious healthcare fraud case,” he wrote in a recent memo, “the targets turned over hard drives with case details; however, conversion of the hard drives to written documents was too expensive and [the case] is now dead.
Thanks Mary, that sounds like a Medicaid Fraud case and if that’s the case, it’s really a shame, because it’s got the potential to be a moneymaker for the government.
It will truly be interesting if Lieberman’s ego knows no bounds and he screws all his D supporters by running as his own party. He would have NO friends on the D side if he pulled that. But, he may not care on the D side.
Shoo — many congrats — my husband was a Reagan Repub before I met him, and shortly thereafter, voted for Dukakis for Prez. And, he will spend the day with me at CT Bob on primary day as our driver! Let’s just say Mr. Kirby has really come around.
Shooey, congrats on your engagement; your affianced is a lucky gal IMO.

Assholes don’t want civilized life. They thrive on weirdness and chaos and suffering. They’re ruling the roost thanks to Goebbels psy-op techniques refined to the ultimate.
Will humans defeat the PNAC and AIPAC. Will we find a way to smash these entities, or will they destroy the entire human experiment. This is the real clash of (mental) civilizations.

Well. I’m getting Jane an Attaturk 14 for her birthday. I’ll sleep at lot safer.

There was this guy wrongfully accused of murdering his wife and was imprisoned here in Utah for 18 years. His case was overturned on retested DNA evidence. The first thing he did was go to Red Iguana. If that is not an endorsement, I don’t know what is.
ccmask — glad you like it. The actual brick and mortar museum is closed for another year until the get the new one done in DC. It is a fabulous place. The branch in NYC regularly has exhibits of Pulitzer Prize winning photography — takes your breath away.
In more depressing news — this evening, a UN observer post in S. Lebanon was bombed by Israel. 2 killed, 2 missing. Kofi Annan said it was “apparently deliberate” — CNN interviewed Israeli ambassador to UN who is demanding an apology because a comment like that cannot be allowed to stand.
Is Israel on this testosterone high because they know Bush will do whatever they tell him because of the pressure from the neocons, so they have us behind them no matter what? Seems to me that this is a Dick Cheney wet dream.
Amazing poll from Cafferty tonight — can’t find a link, but should be front page USAToday on WED — 79% of Americans think Israel has gone too far, 68% think their actions increase OUR risk for a terrorist attack.
shooogarp,
Wow! LOL I need to work on a business trip ; )
It sure would be something if 3,000 people signed it who weren’t certified, wouldn’t it? Where do I sign?

Hi firedoggie’s, Just back from 30day European vacation. A complete vacation, no T.V., no Newspaper, no computer…only history, fun, sightseeing, and lots of pubs! Trying to catch up on news, pollitics, blogs, and back to work tomorrow. ( boo hoo )
Anyhoo all the great people I met over the pond hated bozo Bush except for 1 Irani taxidriver. Glad to be home !

I’m not sure where you are going with this.[…]
My only point is this: I think it is a very real possibility, maybe more than 50%, that Lieberman will _not_ run as an independent, regardless of the margin of defeat.
I’m attributing this to Liberman’s having made some decisions while being angry, and after getting bad advice, and against his better interest, and to the likelyhood of Clinton stumping for him on certain conditions, as is the buzz today.
Or this may be purely wishful thinking. There is no evidence of Liberman being a great tactician, so who knows how to interpret him.
Thanks, Mary. Just Title 18, huh. Well, that’s OK then.
Shooogarp, congratulations. Marriage is a wonderful thing. I’ve always said that everyone should try it once.
Nefarious Leslie, you might want to sign your “old” name on your comments for a bit so as not to confuse your friends. I like the new moniker, although you do realize that you’re going to wind up NefLes, don’t you?
OFG, I don’t know if you’ve had a chance to read the previous threads, but Valley Girl is back, only now she’s posting as M. That’s what bustedknuckles meant at 4.
Happy birthday Jane!
Mary, wrt your 5:42, only if you have the time or interest, could the DoJ turn that over to a Trial Lawyer under the Federal False Claims Act?
I don’t know much about the FFCA, but in general for those statutes that give an individual right to proceed – DOJ doesn’t have to turn it over formally. If there is a right to “pursue in the name of or partially for the benefit of” then usually DOJ/State or whoever represents the applicable GOV entity has a right to also be involved (like the Custer Battles case) but doesn’t have to formally hand over.
I think lhp had some actual experience with this area (???) and maybe when her trial is over she could have some input.
Oh, I almost forgot! HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANE!
Punaise, if I recall correctly sharkbabe said something nice to me the other day [strut][/strut].
P.S. After that bad youtube-athon Friday??, how about something good:

this link about Israel bombing the UN post in Lebanon, wherein John Bolton is quoted:
WTF? Is Bolton apologizing for Israel’s actions? Is he sending a message that the U.S.’s and Israel’s policies are synonymous? Or is he just a frigging idiot who has no business being a spokesman for the U.S?
lotus – Oh amen indeed!

Momentary lapse. Just forgot who he works for.
I’d vote 2 and 3, op99. Neoconmen don’t do apologies, or body counts.
Welcome back, *ooabby. Congrats on the new labradoodle, too.
well, since we’re on Steele now, this is what I suggested to Jane and Redd earlier this evening in an email:
Contest?
tryggth, I’d like to forget, too. Recess appointment to UN ambassadorship (think walrus).
Got EPU’d last thread. :(

Thanks for this confirmation that Shortride is in fact circulating petitions.
I have one foot in the high business/political world*, and had to imagine that petitions were being pushed on a hush-hush basis. Was just waiting for someone honest to spill.
*which is why I am mostly anonymous, the Glenn thing notwithstanding :) Don’t want to get calls saying YOU’RE that rabid lamb egregious?
Littledog, we are EPU here already. Just going to leave bad video link, for research porpoises:

I think that he’s agreed not to split the party, and that’s how he has gotten endorsments from Boxer and Clinton. Apparently, the Democratic Pundits are more worried about his independent run than their own integrity. Pity…

Great minds and all . . . .
Oh shooogarp.
The tears are streaming down my cheeks.
Blessings on you and your new family. Wishing you great joy and happiness.
oh, also thanks kirby kewl newspaper link, i love seeing what the front pages all look like, and there’s no ink on my hands!
Maybe this is my personal fantasy, because God help me I love him, but I think Bill came in to basically make sure Joe can’t win as an independent. It was the kiss of death for Joe with the independents in the state and I am sure Billary knows it.
Thanks to all. You are a big pillar in my life.
shoogarp, that is the most romantic thing…the rings, the everything. Congratulations!

You may be right. “He’s well-intentioned” isn’t exactly the most complimentary thing you can say about someone. It sort of implies that he screws things up a lot.
Hopefully Scooter and Judy can attend if they aren’t too busy….the aspens will be turning. ; )
Yup, I figure BigDog’s trip to Connecticut was for BigDog. All this “they’re one person” crap pisses me off about HillBill: they are two of the most self-interested individuals on the face of the planet, and I am really glad they found each other, rather than inflicting themselves on two innocents.
On the other hand, if Bill really thinks she should be Preznit, he might do her bidding. But not about RGJoe: that visit was all Bill. I woulda loved to be a fly on the wall yesterday, because this stumping for RGJoe was a set up for the phone call on August Ninth from Chappaqua.
Senate passes interstate abortion bill (AP)
14 Dems voted for this Tom Coburn wet dream. I’d say RGJoe damn well better not be among them. The bills are S. 403 and H.R. 748, but I can’t find the final roll call.

Lieberman was a “Nay”
Even if you throw tomatoes at me, I liked Hillary’s book. To me, AS A PERSON, she seems really sincere. Now Bills book, I had to put down. It was too freakin heavy.
shooogarp – congrats on the engagement! My daughter (23) just got engaged, too – wedding late April/early May of 2007.
angie – can’t wait for the fallout on the Michael Steele thing. Steele is truly a nice guy, but I don’t think he’s all that bright. Couldn’t pass the bar and had to leave his law firm, hasn’t been successful in business (if I’m not mistaken, the 2002 gubernatorial campaign had to put him on the payroll as he had no other income or any resources to draw on). He’s Catholic, very pro-life (and anti-death penalty, to his credit – so many seem to be pro-death penalty) – was at seminary for a while. GOP loves him because he’s black, but not too black, if that makes sense, and he’s conservative – all in one package (urban legend has it that when he showed up for the Ehrlich-Kennedy gubernatorial debate, he was showered with Oreos). But he’s so clearly a tool of the party; he’s someone the term “rubber stamp Republican” was probably invented for. This little faux pas re: the Milbank column is not going to help him.
Go Ben Cardin!!!
I wonder what Ralph Reed is doing?
Mickey #166: if the Big Dog and Boxer were able to make Lieberman cough up his Liebertarian Independent party nonsense in return for an appearance, I could understand their visits. If they are one day political celebrity stunts, without any further effort, I don’t think they will make much difference.
Bill’s speech was so muted. Remember this man can speak to people, pull them to himself with his words, he can bring people to their feet with a well toned sentence. (God, it hurts to remember when we had a president who could actually pull off a full sentence).
He could have rallied the troops if he really wanted to…..
I found this at Congress.org — a “soapbox” Is this new? WTF?
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/soapbox/
Let elected officials hear from you! Create a Soapbox Alert.
“Soapbox” defined: A temporary platform used while making an impromptu or nonofficial public speech.
• Give exposure to your issue – Thousands of politically-interested people visit Congress.org every day.
• Allow others to take action – You pick the targets and make it easy for people to contact them. Our database of elected officials includes the President, Congress, governors and state legislators.
• Send your alert to friends and supporters – Create your action alert for the Web and email it to supporters at the same time.
• Track activity on your campaign – View reports with stats on page views (how many people read about your issue) and actions taken (how many messages were sent)
Here’s the final vote on S.403.
These are the Dems who voted yea:
Bayh (D-IN)
Byrd (D-WV)
Carper (D-DE)
Conrad (D-ND)
Dorgan (D-ND)

Johnson (D-SD)
Kohl (D-WI)
Landrieu (D-LA)
Nelson (D-FL)
Nelson (D-NE)
Pryor (D-AR)
Reid (D-NV)
Salazar (D-CO)
So Sen. Coburn believes “nothing positive” comes from “being sexually active outside of marriage?” Perhaps he’d like to tack on an amendment mandating that “wingnuts” who commit adultery be sterilized.

From what I’ve read, I think everything you said is true. He’s apparently a nice guy a loyal Republican when push comes to shove.
Regarding the Oreo cookie business, Steele himself only alleges it was one Oreo cookie and even that allegation is disputed by others in attendence.
My last link should have pointed here.
Sorry.
I apologize for the long post but here’s an email I got from Barbara Boxer via her PAC for change. I think the calls, emails, etc. have to made a difference for her to write this:
You are receiving this message in response to an email you sent to Senator Boxer’s official Senate office. Senate ethics rules prohibit Senator Boxer’s official Senate office from responding to your email in a substantive way, so this response is being sent from Senator Boxer’s political action committee, PAC for a Change.
Dear ,
Thank you for writing to me about the hotly contested Connecticut primary for Senate.
I am traveling to many states throughout the summer and fall to help Democrats take back the Senate and House. I started yesterday morning at a campaign stop for Senator Menendez and then made appearances for Joe Lieberman in Connecticut before he left for a Bill Clinton rally.
So why did I go to Connecticut? When Joe asked me to tell his constituents about our work together on the environment and choice, I told him I would.
I realize this decision has deeply disappointed you. I completely understand your position and only hope that you will come to understand mine.
For 14 years, Joe Lieberman and I have shared an alliance on a range of progressive issues, especially two that are central to my public service — the environment and choice.
We have worked side by side on the Senate’s Environment and Public Works Committee. When Bill Clinton was President, the stakes weren’t nearly as high. But within hours of President Bush taking office, the environment was under attack.
Believe me, it has not been easy to fight the Bush Administration and the Republicans on this committee who try to undermine the environment, and its supporters, at every turn.
I know that’s not news to you. But what you might not know about is the critical role that Joe has played in this battle.
The fact is, on every single fight I have waged on that committee — from arsenic in the water, to air pollution, to pesticide testing on infants and children, to global warming, to Superfund and much more — Joe has been a stalwart partner and leader.
Joe was the first author of legislation to permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He was one of the first Senators to try to tackle the global warming challenge. The Republicans laughed at his efforts and refused to admit that we were right on this issue. But Joe was undeterred.
And it’s the same with women’s rights, especially choice. Each and every time a woman’s right to choose has come to the Senate floor — including late term emergency abortions — I’ve had a reliable partner in Joe.
He is one of a small handful of Senators who has joined with me both times I have introduced the Freedom of Choice Act, the most strongly pro-choice piece of legislation in the U.S. Senate.
Because of his long record on choice and other important progressive issues, Joe has won the endorsement of organizations such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL, AFL-CIO, the League of Conservation Voters, and the Human Rights Campaign.
Of course, as you rightly point out, Joe and I don’t agree on everything. And nothing has deeply disappointed me more than our complete disagreement on the Iraq War.
The fact is, I disagree with many of my usual allies on the war since my bill to redeploy troops out of Iraq by the end of THIS year is the toughest redeployment bill out there. As far as I’m concerned, I will stand alone to end this war.
Joe and I have virtually no common ground on Iraq except for one thing — we have teamed up to provide comprehensive mental health care for our troops. Our amendment will ensure that our soldiers will not be sent into combat if they have mental health problems, including post traumatic stress, and that they will be able to get mental health help within 72 hours if they need it.
Again, this may sound easy, but the truth is, we had to work very hard to get our mental health amendment to pass the Senate, which it did.
I do not minimize the differences I have on the war with Joe — or any of my colleagues — but as I said, I also have a 14-year alliance on other progressive issues that are important to us, to California, and our country.
I understand that you disagree vehemently with my decision, as is your right. But, on August 8, the Democrats of Connecticut will make their voices heard on Joe’s candidacy, and I will have deep respect for their decision.
Until then, I only hope that you will weigh our differences about this primary campaign against everything that ties us together, and please know that I will continue to work as hard as I can to earn your trust and support.
Best,
Barbara Boxer
I had always imagined that I would go to my grave proud to have been a Democrat. But the
Waterbury Gangbang and the slanderous accusations being leveled at Lamont’s supporters by big Democrats will make this the last campaign in which I actively support the Party.
Feel the Joe-mentum! He’s just where he wants to be, in a three-way tie for third place!
It’s funny how the Leiberman camp can’t use Lamont’s name when talking about him. It’s always, “my opponent, Joe’s opponent”. Lamont never has a problem calling the problem by its name. Mr. Leiberman.
