Colin McEnroe invited me up to hang out with him and Lowell Weicker on Colin’s radio show on Friday. What am I going to say, no? I dragged along the infamous Spazeboy as well as James Rogan and Will Dixon from the BBC. Quite the party.
It was awe-inspiring to be sitting there with Weicker. When I was a little kid I’d come home from school and watch the Watergate hearings; I didn’t comprehend even a fraction of what was going on but was glued to it nonetheless. It was obvious something very important was happening and I certainly understood the power of personality and and the drama of human interaction. Lowell Weicker was a titan. His character was evident and watching his struggle of conscience play out was one of the most memorable dramas of my childhood.
And there is probably nobody who is enjoying the spectacle of the Lamont/Lieberman race more than Weicker. Since Lieberman gained his Senate seat after beating Weicker in 1988 in an ugly battle, it is with no small amount of satisfaction that he is watching Holy Joe having to fight for his political life.
At one point early on, Weicker said that he would run against Lieberman if nobody else stepped up to the plate, but he’s 75 now and his health isn’t all it could be. As Colin said, "if he felt a little better, he would have run, and we would have had a situation that made the current one look like a dull episode of Sponge Bob."
Weicker said he did not think the current battle between Lieberman and Lamont was a battle for the soul of the Democratic party, he said he thought it was a battle for the future of America, and definitely a referendum on the war that would have far-reaching implications should Ned defeat Lieberman on August 8.
Feelings were obviously running strong as Weicker started taking calls. One Joe defender called up echoing Lieberman’s threadbare arguments about Ned voting with his party 80% of the time. Weicker scoffed, having been a Greenwich alderman himself in his long career, tasked with dealing with the filling of potholes and the placement of stop signs. It was a rather desperate move to try and equate Ned’s record of working with Republicans in Greenwich to Lieberman’s complicity in the Senate. "It’s not Republican or Democratic garbage," he said quoting Fiorello LaGuardia. For Lieberman to compare that to his own support for the horror in Iraq was, Weicker thought, absurd.
Colin himself is an astute handicappers of local politics, and he thinks that the greatest mistake Lieberman made early on was throwing his perceived affability out the window (although I think Weicker would argue that Joe’s reputation for being a good-natured gentleman who was "above it all" is largely a crock).
Colin has known Lieberman since he was 15 years old and thinks that he would have voted for Alito on the Senate floor vote, too, if he wasn’t already feeling the heat.
Listening to Weicker in high dudgeon over Lieberman and his war was great. You can hear him talk about this and other things in the YouTube by Spazeboy above, but he believes that the implications of Joe’s continued support reach much further than the disaster in the middle east. "How can we trust you on everything else?" he said. "You picked the most extreme option in Iraq, you were totally wrong and you won’t admit that."
"And then he goes ahead and also criticizes those who criticize the President. It’s America, I wish more people had criticized the war eariler on…I’ve never seen such a mealy response to such a big issue of our time."
There may be better ways to spend an afternoon but I can’t think of one. The dogs have declared they do not want to hear any more sentences that begin with "And then Lowell Weicker said…"

Jane!
War in Error
I am so jealous … Jane getting to hang out with so many awesome guys! damn!
Lowell Weicker is the ultimate class act and a true hero!
Woof!
Great article, Jane. I’m waiting for YouTube to load on dial-up. So, can you tell us more about the Beeb folks and what they are doing in CT?
Ahem.
Dear “Concerned”:
Read here.
Hugs,
Christy
Did you see this diary at Kos?
My wife was a spy at the Lieberman Rally, includes not only the great paragraph below but also a little Lamont. Go on over and rate up.
Spazeboy!
You rock Jane!
excuse me Senators Specter and McCain, could y’all stop preening in the mirror and fighting over the microphone long enough for me to introduce you to a real maverick ? this here is Lowell Weicker
oh Jane, sounds like a well deserved blast was had by all
M at 5 — I think Jane is on her way back from the Clinton thing. I’m sure she’ll have MUCH news, but on the Beeb thing — they were at YKos, and quite friendly, and working on a documentary about grassroots politics, blogs, and all sorts of other American political nuggets. Siun probably has vastly more insight than I do on this, but the Beeb fellow that was at YKos is the same one in CT, and he was quite fun and great with a camera and microphone. :)
Is it top of mind with the voters of CT that Lieberman hosed Bill during the impeachment hearings, do you think? Or has that slipped down the memory hole a bit. Is the press reminding the voters of the irony of Bill’s endorsement? Just curious.

Do I detect a slight tinge of sarcasm?
Hugs,

I am so envious. I too remember Lowell Weicker from Watergate. People were hoping this guy would run for President back then.
the Courant article on the Clinton visit certainly mentioned Whiny Joes Monica speech http://www.courant.com/news/po…..ines-local
I’m sure the dogs can adjust. Or they can stop reading FDL and leave the Weicker posts to us.

Cool. I’m glad to hear it. Sometimes we all remember things like it was yesterday and I’m always surprised when others don’t seem aware, or have forgotten. Thanks.
Speaking of memories, I remember every minute of the Watergate hearings, watching it on my little b&w TV. Edge of your chair excitement… best TV ever!
Listen, these attacks on Joe Lieberman must stop! We undermine Joe Lieberman at our own peril. Without Joe who can we point to and let our children know what a fair weather friend, a turncoat and a double talker is?
Also, sympathies to the folks in California, but now Arnold Schwarzenegger(R)-Austria is getting a taste of his own medicine with the blackouts in that state.
The Gropernator won’t have Kenny Boy Lay to kick around this time.

egregious at 13 — ever so slightly, yes. I’m tired of getting “concerned” e-mails that I’m too mean to this or that elected official when (a) I’m not mean and (b) it’s their job to answer questions from the people they represent. What part of that is difficult for people to understand?
Just watched the video … what a treat to watch that great political chat …
Christy is right on the Beeb folks but I’ll add a touch. James Rogan is a quite wonderful british filmaker – take a look at his director’s reel at http://www.parkvillage.co.uk – who also directs documentaries for BrookLapping, a stunning documentary house based in the UK. James is directing a documentary series on political bloggers which was originally backed by Sundance and has now also become a BBC project. He came over to cover YearlyKos and many of us got to meet him then and really enjoyed his company and his intelligent perspective on what we’ve doing. Happily, James has been able to fly back over with Will to cover the Lamont/Lieberman race from the perspective of how blogs influence the election.
I had the pleasure of seeing James in London just recently and I can’t say enough good stuff about him. We’re lucky to have such a gifted filmaker covering the emergence of netroots.
The ultimate:
Best. TV. Ever.
CHS–
I have observed you for the better part of a year now. You are never mean. You are unfailingly courteous even when you are clearly angry. Lucky peanut. Lucky blindhog. Lucky us.
All we want, really, is for elected officials to DO THEIR **** JOBS. Is that too much to ask, truly?
Heh look at that, I got one of them there canned emails from Dan Hammer re: Sen Box supporting Lieberman. Looks like our rabid lambing had an effect.
Elected officials actually listening to the voters…what a revolutionary idea! Shame we have to go through all of this theater though, it should be happening automatically.
Can’t wait to see Jane’s wrap up later about how the Clinton thing went.
I’m watching Keith Olbermann now, and I must say I’m surprised by how much graphic footage is being broadcast by the msm. There’s been very little Iraq footage at all, but with the Lebanon thing they’re all right in the middle of hospital wards showing the wounded. Not sure quite what to make of that fact.
You’re never mean Christy. I admire your restraint when pointing out to people that they’re close to or have crossed a line.
KO (except it’s Brian) ran a trailer saying the Clinton/Lieberman thing was coming up, but so far, it hasn’t. But there’s plenty of Bush/Cheney bashing, so I can wait.
Christy – I look at it this way: our tax dollars go into a pool, from which the salaries of every single Senator and Represenative is paid. That means they work for ALL of us, we get to ask the questions, we have the right to expect answers. A little pointed anger is healthy – it lets these people know that we’re paying attention, and we don’t appreciate it when they just mail it in.
Boxer was wrong. She was given a perfect opportunity, back in June, to have her staff do the background work on Joe, to check out his statements, and to have all the facts. Was she too busy between then and now to do that little bit of homework?
She still doesn’t get it, and that’s either poor preparation, or ans assumption that the YKos folks might be plugged in to the facts, but the provincial people of CT probably wouldn’t notice. Wrong again.
Hope someone asked Cab Ride his position on the Senate Bill Boxer is fighting – the one that would make it a felony to transport a minor across state lines for an abortion without parental consent.
Boxer and some of these other politicians better get used to dealing with angry people, because they are going to be seeing more and more of them as we head into November.
the Emails from the Boxer Senatorial Office indicate that the campaign committee is going to reply. It’ll be most interesting to read the official Boxer written statement that’s soon to be sent. I hope her political folk dont make her look too clueless.
Like Jane, and like I said in my first post to firedoglake a few days ago, I also watched the Watergate hearings on TV. I believe they were broadcast extensively on PBS. My dad was obssessed with watching them and explaining everything to me. When my parents had social engagements, I watched for my dad (much to the chagrin of my babysitters) and reported back every detail when he returned home. I was only seven. My uncle was a House lawyer and could be seen often, so that was extra incentive to watch. My uncle had inside word when Nixon decided to resign and my dad packed the family up in our Volkswagon Beetle and drove us up to Washington, D.C. from Florida to be there when Nixon made his announcement that he’d be resigning. I remember the time vividly. Heady times.
I really really admire and appreciate what Jane is doing in CT and with this site, in general. If my dad were still alive, he’d be reading this blog site every day. No doubt. I especially love reading the thoughtful comments by the regulars. What a neat bunch!
OT–rewatching the American Experience presentation on New York City directed by Ric Burns. A timely reminder of how evil and pure opportunism has cycled in and out of American politics for over 400 years.
Christy- thanks- I’ve been intrigued about this since I saw Colin McEnroe’s blog comment on Friday:
http://blogs.courant.com/colin…..r_be_.html
Be There or Be Square
Lowell P. Weicker will co-host the show with me today. Ned Lamont will be a guest around 3:35. This is enough to bring babeometric blogger Jane Hamsher from Firedoglake into our studio with a BBC camera crew.
BTW, his blog is one that I forget to read, bec. I’ve just forgotten before to make a link, and it is not easy to find via the Courant.com site:
http://blogs.courant.com/colin_mcenroe_to_wit/
Will Dixon is a good man and has been a good friend of mine ever since our time together at University.
I wish him the best in his filmmaking endeavors.
GSD–
We undermine the Senator’s credibility at our nation’s peril.
So we have to support him or else the terrorists win! And we must squelch democracy here so we can promote democracy abroad! Or something.
Election primaries…probably another terrorist threat.
[pardon if double posted]
p.s. Suin- thanks for the added info re: the Beeb. Looks like it is an extended project, not just a one-hour documentary…? If so, that would be great.
Will – in case you are reading the comments – this is not the real Brian, just an old friend who ran into you in Connecticut on Thursday. Writing under a pseudonym to say hello. I hope all is well.
Weicker vs. wanker.
Heh look at that, I got one of them there canned emails from Dan Hammer re: Sen Box supporting Lieberman. Looks like our rabid lambing had an effect.
Must… not… post… cheesy Miami Vice keytar video…
Egreg..
Of course, Democracy is imperiled by this election.
We also know that the nation is hanging by a thread when the voters choose to approach their leaders and ask them questions.
When will these affronts to our democracy end?
-GSD
Brian – thanks for introducing Will to us as well – I have not met him yet but I’m hoping to get to CT for a bit to help on the Lamont campaign and so I’m hoping I’ll meet Will as well. I know James was very happy to have him along.
Is it top of mind with the voters of CT that Lieberman hosed Bill during the impeachment hearings, do you think? Or has that slipped down the memory hole a bit. Is the press reminding the voters of the irony of Bill’s endorsement? Just curious.
Jenny, now being the political person I am it causes me a great deal of personal embarrassment to admit that until it was mentioned here, yes, I had forgotten about it.
What I do remember about Lieberman was that he was constantly pissing me off, even if the details were sometimes forgotten. And over the years I pulled the lever in his favor simply because he was a Dem and nobody else was running against him.
With each passing year, my disgust with him grew. And, needless to say, that anger hit the boiling point in the last couple of years.
When I faxed him about the Alito cloture vote I swore to him then and there that if he didn’t filibuster Alito this would be the LAST time I voted for him. Thank god, there was a good alternative.
In any case, the reason I submit my self for public embarrassment is to say that I can only imagine there are a great number of Dem voters here in CT who might have also forgotten that episode. Clinton’s stumping for him today and every bit of news covering said mentioned Lieberman’s speech during the impeachment, or showed clips and THAT is exactly the reminder that CT voters need.
When the subject was brought up here I remembered the kick in the gut that I felt when Lieberman did that as well as the subsequent anger. I’m sure that today’s news coverage also brought that painful reminder to other CT Dems.
p.p.s.
Sorry about spelling- Siun!
And, kinda ironic (or?), because at the time of Watergate, and after, the Brits didn’t really understand what all the fuss was about!!!
Here’s the Brook Lapping link for info on the series:
http://www.tenalps.com/shpx_co…..p?id=11426
This predates the BBC involvement and I’m sure the project has evolved some as it moves from idea to reality.
SharonW, don’t beat yourself up. Joe is still better than a real Republican. Not by much, but a little. And the Democrats need every “D” they can get, even if some of them are merely nominal.
And, kinda ironic (or?), because at the time of Watergate, and after, the Brits didn’t really understand what all the fuss was about!!!
Now, if Nixon had gotten a blowjob, then you’d have something.
laughing … M, I’ve mispelled it myself on occasion and I’ve definitely dropped the proper accents!
the KO Show did a decent thingie about the Clinton visit including a quickie shot of Maura holding up a handmade sign up against the window of the candy shop. It showed Clinton kissing Monica and Bush kissing Joe.
Fiasco. We’re going to be hearing that word, or synonyms, a lot, as the public watches not just Iraq but Lebanon in flames, buildings destroyed, people on all sides crying/screaming in anguish. They see Bush babbling nonsense while groping heads of state; they see Condi dallying and tring to explain why all the scenes Americans are seeing on tv should continue indefinitely until someone figures out how to implement a comprehensive solution to 60 years of violence and occupation. They know the right is demanding even more war, and they’re not buying any more, because they can see no connection between all the violence there and our safety here.
Weicker said on the YouTube thingy that the Administration’s foreign policy and it’s Iraq invasion are the key issue, and he described it in catastrophic terms. Lieberman can’t run away from his unbridled support for the President’s war policies. It as a measure of how out of touch he and his campaign advisers are that they keep reminding the voters that this is the major issue differentiating him from Lamont. Fine, let them make this argument. Weicker is saying, in effect, “and why shouldn’t we hold you responsible for this fiasco.”
Back to SharonW’s comment: How much has Ned been talking about Joe’s Alito vote and hypocrisy? To me that’s every bit as damaging as his support for the war. Possibly even more so in the long run.
It showed Clinton kissing Monica and Bush kissing Joe.
You are taking me to a place I really do not want to go.
SharonW 37 -
Yeah, it’s human nature and that’s why we need the press to connect the dots and remind us of what’s gone before. Especially since the ‘04 election when they had so much they could bring to the table, easily, and they didn’t bother to correct the most outlandish lies, I’d kinda given up. Not being in CT, I was curious.
*ilson’s link put my mind at ease, somewhat…
It is soooo funny that Clinton’s appearance for Joe is forcing the press to cover the impeachment incident. LAUGH OUT LOUD.
Less dangerous to be in Lebanon right now than Iraq.
Speaking of which, ABC Worldnews Tonight caught me off-guard tonight with an absolutely glorious segue from Lebanon to Iraq. It went something like this “As all news coverage lately has been focused on Lebanon, Iraq has almost disappeared from the headlines and yet during the 13 days since the Israeli/Lebanon conflict occured more Iraqis have died than Lebonese, and more U.S. troops have died than Israelis.”
Dang! I was floored. Ya think ABC is waking from their dark slumber?
That’s why the Bill and Boxer endorsements are so telling – why would they step up to support Joe if they understood and cared about the state our country is in. They all continue to play along as if war crimes were not being committed daily.
Eli :: I did that parallel construction on purpose …
There’s been very little Iraq footage at all, but with the Lebanon thing they’re all right in the middle of hospital wards showing the wounded. Not sure quite what to make of that fact.
Not By Our Hand.
Heh Eli, maybe Joe shouldve planted a smacker right on Bill…that way he could say he just had a President fetish :)
Hee hee. I don’t think that short segment on KO is going to do HoJo a ton of good. Chip Reid was at the candy store, and showed Boxer walking with Joe and didn’t identify her! For which I must suppose she is grateful. The piece pointed out that Clinton will endorse Lamont if Ned wins, played a bit of HoJo’s Monica speech, and showed some of the Lamont morph commercial and two versions of The Kiss. Best of all, the “banner” underneath the segment: Running Scared.
Eli :: I did that parallel construction on purpose …
I was afraid of that.
Are there any pictures of Joe or Dubya with cigars?

or falafels, Eli ?

That’s why it’s so important to rail against Boxer and Clinton when they stump for Joe. We have every right to assume they stand behind his policies, which we are against.
If they think they can slide by on friendship, quid pro quo, the buddy system, any longer, they’re nuts. This ain’t no party and this ain’t no disco!
Heh Eli, maybe Joe shouldve planted a smacker right on Bill…that way he could say he just had a President fetish :)
Bill’s horny, but not *that* horny.
http://www.salon.com/news/feat…..lieberman/
McEnroe at Salon:
“Hillary’s politics are Joe’s politics. If Lieberman sinks, it will raise a lot of questions about the current Clinton strategy, which is really just a post-millennial version of that old-time DLC religion. When I asked Waters why she thought Clinton was coming to Connecticut, she said there were rumors in Washington that he and his wife are freaked out by the sudden progressive insurgency. The DLC is putting down a small rebellion before it spreads. Thus, Bill, the DLC’s greatest success story, will be standing alongside former DLC chairman Lieberman in Waterbury mere hours after Hillary gives the keynote speech at the DLC’s annual national convention in Denver….
or falafels, Eli ?
Can they be administered oreilly?
Weicker, Sirica, Richardson, Ruckelshaus: Giants for the ages. I tip my Democrat hat, to these Republicans. These guys knew what was expected of them, and did it. It is entirely possible, in my view only, that they saved the republic. Genuine American heroes.
BarbaraB 53 -
But I wonder what Clinton’s “support” will be? Will he or she, or Boxer for that matter, come back to CT and campaign Ned like they’re doing for Joe?
My gut tells me no.
Sharon W — You’re right; indeed, the whole country is waking up. This a sea change moment, and it is tragic that so many there have to suffer to wake up so many here. But ironically, that was the Bush’s policy, wasn’t it?
The Lamont campaign is where this issue gets tested to define the direction of the Democratic party. And Jane is exactly where she should be, giving us a ringside seat.
It is entirely possible, in my view only, that they saved the republic. Genuine American heroes.
Only for about 30 years, unfortunately. Didn’t any of them have kids???
Hi all, yet another interesting day. :)
You MUST see this –
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..&eurl=
via MyLeftNutmeg
I doubt if Ned will need too many heavy-hitters to help in a spirited race against Schlesinger … in fact, I’d bet on it !
I think Clinton and Boxer will indicate support of the primary winner but how can they *actively* get behind Ned? I don’t see how they can do a turnaround like that and still seem credible. They should’ve stayed the heck out of CT for now.
Why Lebanon true coverage and not Iraq: it is closer to Europe. French and other people have settled there and developed connections. When it disintegrates, coverage is like Europe, not like the other, less important countries [sarcasm alert].
Journalists don’t have very far to go to cover the bombing of the international airport, dams, bridges, the lighthouse, roads, factories, dairy farms, and my personal favorite, a Greek Orthodox Church where people were seeking sanctuary.
We casually use the word sanctuary without thinking about the deeper and desperate meaning of the word.
Also from Salon linked above:
..”Lieberman staffers and Hartford Courant reporter Mark Pazniokas fell into an almost Aquinian discussion about Lieberman’s connection with African-American voters. Was he “reconnecting,” as many of the churchgoers were telling Pazniokas, or had he never disconnected at all, as the campaign kept insisting?
“His people will tell you he has been here, doing things quietly,” former Hartford mayor and state representative Thirman Milner, now a Lamont supporter, told me. “He must have been really quiet.” …
Would very much like to know about the fundraiser Boxer & Lieberman were to attend after those unwashed bloggers were so mean to them -
was it for DSCC ? Shortride exclusively ? B’nai Brith ? anyone ?
The taxicab driver’s union? …
The taxicab driver’s union? …
Joe already has the yellow vote locked up.
Not sure about the fundraiser, but Clinton was apparently 2 hours late to the big rally (according to Arianna).
jenny from the blog,
was just wondering if Shortride had promised Boxer some of that Insurance Co./Investment Banker/Big Pharma cash
btw, Greenwich is now the Hedge Fund capitol, have any of those kids thrown their support to either candidate ?
I also got the Hammer email from Babs office – curious how it came only a few hours after The Meltdown…. she must know how much trouble she’s in…
hey jane, maura and ctbob, and anyone else i’m missing, you guys are doing a bang up job of reporting over there on the right coast.
thanks for the youtube of joeboxer stumbling over her words, i wrote a dkos diary about it and started a firestorm of debate.
on that diary, a poster named gladkov created a wonderful list of 32 of lieberman’s votes or stands on issues that are reasons enough not to support him “if you are a dem,” in gladkov’s words.
i recommend everyone read it. but since kos doesn’t need the traffic and i do, i reproduced it over at skippy.
UP at 65 — yikes! That’s blistering. So fab, I put it on my blog too.
The revolution absolutely will not be televised — it is being YouTubed, even now as we speak.
Jenny — They can do it credibly the same way HoJo can do it credibly (although not if he runs as an independent.) Losers in the primary endorse winners all the time. Will they campaign for him? *ilson’s right, if Joe drops his plans to run anyway, they won’t have to. What they will do if Joe continues to run is anybody’s guess, but mine is that having failed to quell the progressive rebellion, they will find a way to at least try to defuse it by making nice. We’ll see.
Time for the K.O. punch from Ned? Don’t want him to get ahead of himself but it could be time to treat this as the general election and not just a primary.
1982—George Mitchell’s first senate run. (He had already served two years having been appointed by the Gov. when Muskie resigned to become Sec’y of State so there’s a difference here.)
Anyhow, early ’82, Mitchell’s Republican opponent makes some ridiculous statement about George’s position on Social Security. George goes after him hammer and tongs, just dismantles his credibility. The guy never recovered. The November election was decided in June. Earliest election victory I have ever witnessed.
Don’t know if HoleyJoe’s misrepresentation of the Halliburton holdings has sufficient heft to be that haymaker but it sure brings into question his credibility. Carpe diem, Ned. You got the mo.
Jane, if I were straight I would be soooo working out my strategy to win you over.
What they will do if Joe continues to run is anybody’s guess, but mine is that having failed to quell the progressive rebellion, they will find a way to at least try to defuse it by making nice.
If they snub Ned after the primary, I think they severely damage their credibility as “good/loyal Democrats”.
GSD–
Who will rid me of this troublesome
priestprimary opponent?Jenny from the blog: yes it was the best. I could not believe it.
BarbaraB -
I agree. They’ll make nice, for sure. And I gave a silent high five to *ilson’s comment. Agree 100%, if Ned wins the primary he’ll have such momentum he won’t need the old news pols to prop him up.
“Only for about 30 years…”
Yes. And we have potential heroes amongst us now, I believe. We already are aware of some of their names. And it is, I think, incumbent upon us to understand full well, that saving the republic is a going to be a constant, and imperatively consistent struggle. Our survival depends upon it.
OTOH, I hate you for having all this fun without me.
Sen Schumer on CNN just said Bush/Condi are right and we should “stay the course” (his words) on the Israeli/US policy in Lebanon. He’s on with Sen Kyl (R. Ariz) and I can’t tell the difference. What’s wrong with this picture?
Just back from the Clinton event and then the subsequent Lamont event.
Jane and I both had tickets to see Clinton, but were both denied entry. In fact, my ticket was stolen by a Lieberman staff member, literally ripped out of my hand.
I’ll have more tomorrow, including some video (unfortunately, none of the ticket being stolen from me…my camera was stowed elsewhere since it wasn’t going to be allowed in)
I haven’t the time to read all the comments here tonight, but I’m having a great time with Jane.
OK kiddo, I think one of the big differences is that there were actually principled Republicans back then.
Urban Pirate @ 65:
Man, don’t be spreading that harsh video about…You undermine my corporate sales of Lawn Jockey Joey at the nation’s peril.
;>)
What the heck???
spazeboy are you serious??????????
Well it doesn’t surprise me…R.G> Joe is just following in his idols (Bush)footsteps…..
Not allowing you in….UNBELIEVABLE!
Sen Schumer on CNN just said Bush/Condi are right and we should “stay the course” (his words) on the Israeli/US policy in Lebanon. He’s on with Sen Kyl (R. Ariz) and I can’t tell the difference. What’s wrong with this picture?
2010, baby.
Jane and I both had tickets to see Clinton, but were both denied entry. In fact, my ticket was stolen by a Lieberman staff member, literally ripped out of my hand.
Well, gee. What does this remind me of?
That really sucks, spazeboy. I wish I could say I was surprised, but it’s pretty clear whose playbook they’re emulating.

Agreed, OK kiddo — and I’d add Howard Baker.
Jenny from the blog…GEeeeeeeeeeeezzzz what’s wrong with me, I forgot all about that…LOL
LindaR and DarkBlack – isn’t that GREAT!
jesus. for all of Lieberman’s faults, I at least appreciated his willingness to allow the debate. Now he’s “canning” his appearances, and refusing entry to jane and spaze (who have always been well-behaved , if critical)
“I’m having a great time with Jane.”
We know, that’s why all of us hang out here.
I guess Jane and spaze need to become Masters Of Disguise now.
You know, I was just reading some other garbagey Chait article, and something finally clicked — these guys keep thinking of politics as a tug-of-war game, that we’re “pulling” to the left by working to defeat Lieberman. But it’s really a lot less one-dimensional than that: this works a lot more like a game of soccer, and we’re trying to sideline a player who keeps scoring off his own team.
Sorry, a little OT. Just had to get that metaphor out.
Regarding the bouncer policies at the Clinton event tonight:
The parallels between Lieberman’s campaigning style and that of Bush are growing ever more pronounced.
Indeed Eli indeed. Jane should have worn her candy coated flip flops for starters.
“The cirle is complete. Now I am the master.” The treatment of Jane and Spazeboy is identical to the way the Bush people treat “the people.” Lieberman has become Bush.
scarecrow – Once again we are reading from the same page. I hope all is well.
Just FWIW,

We’re gonna need a bigger Kiss Float…
A trojan horse Kiss Float so Jane and spaze can jump out of it and say… “surprise!”.
Schumer likes war. It keeps the funds folling into his political coffers.
I still fear that Joe and his DLC buddies have some last minute slime they are going to pull. I have visions of Iowa in my head, despite rational thinking that this is a totally different scenario.
As far as the Clinton’s trying to tamp down the uprising in the dem party — do we have news from them. Regardless of what happens to Ned, we will keep helping him speak out, AND move on to the next progressive candidate. This will not stop until they have totally abdicated. It can be in Connecticut, or somewhere else, but it will happen.
spazeboy…what happened at the Lamont shindig?
So Spazeboy and Jane need to dress like Republicans and walk in that android fashion. This might be tough.
wxyz — you got it first. Hows the electricity/reliability there? Were you affected by the ConEd distribution failures?
Pach: I’m worried about you and Spazeboy’s girlfriend!
do you think the LieberTroopers had an enemies list of known “agitators” or did they simply recognize you by sight?
whaaaaat? for a democratic primary? lotus, do you have the smelling salts handy???
So Spazeboy and Jane need to dress like Republicans and walk in that android fashion. This might be tough.

Check out the article above. It looks like the Republicans might try to find a viable candidate to run in the Connecticut Senate race. The best thing that could happen to the Lamont campaign is the prospect of the Republicans finding a stronger candidate to run in November. If indeed the GOP finds such a candidate and Lamont wins the primary, Lieberman is going to come under enormous pressure to quit the race and not piss away an othewise safe Senate seat for the Democrats. Even the DSSC and DLC centrists would be horrified at the possibility of a 3-way race.
Follow-up to Jenny from the Blog at 5:28 pm on the Butterfield revelation. My understanding is that the question posed to Butterfield was not completely out of the blue. Apparently a previous witness who had participated in conversations at the WH with Nixon had told the committee staffers the Nixon spoke rather oddly, as if he knew the conversation was being recorded. So the staffers took a wild guess at the next appropriate witness and got the answer they never expected, i.e. the truth. Proof that attention to the small details sometimes really pays off.
Comment on the Boxer business today. I wonder if the next time she has a personal encounter with Biden on the Senate floor that she might give him a round-trip, pre-paid railway ticket to CT with the schedule clearly marked. No sense, in her mind, that other Senate supporters of Lieberman should not get the same chance to interact with the local electorate.
OT
Just spoke with Steve Specter. He is unhappy with the position his father has taken. I can’t say anymore. But I am sending Arlen a letter. A letter he he will read, that doesn’t go through an aide’s hand first. There may be hope.

No security clearances revoked over Plame
WASHINGTON – No one in the Bush administration has been stripped of security clearances over the leak of former CIA officer Valerie Plame’s identity to reporters three years ago.

So Karl Rove still has his. I would have bet a TON of money it was secretly yanked when he was moved to the “political position”, and lost.

Very true. But respectfully, I’d have to say I am much more concerned about the whereabouts of principled Democratic Party leaders. As for “principled Republicans”? These days that would seem a contradiction in terms. At least for me. Surely, there must be at least one decent Repug. Somewhere? Perhaps not.
While we’re waiting for Jane, the General cracked me up today:
“Factchecking FUBAR”
“Ofjoshua’s laughter kept me awake most of Saturday night. I eventually asked her what she thought was so funny, thinking that she had accidentally spied my little soldier again, and she showed me a book, FUBAR: America’s Right-Wing Nightmare by Sam Seder and Stephen Sherrill. She explained it as being a humorous look at the Glorious Conservative Christian Cultural Revolution.
That didn’t seem possible to me. After all the GC3R is very serious business–there’s nothing funny about Noah’s dinosaurs, blastocyst-Americans, and Spongebob Squarepants recruiting our children into homosexuality. So after Ofjoshua fell asleep, I stole her book, took it down to my bunker in the crawlspace under the trailer, and read it….
ummm… Stepford was situated in Connecticut but it’s solid Liberman voters
Woah! Jane and Spazeboy denied entrance?!!!! Never mind the sartorial advice… this is gonna be big news, if I know my Jane.
Kurt @ 23, the difference in coverage of pain and blood may be in marketing decisions:
Blood and suffering on the screen from Iraq would turn the public opinion (further, more actively) away from our continued involvement in this ugly war.
Blood and suffering on the screen from Lebanon might be caluculated to show the American TV watchers that we aren’t the only ones involved in a nasty conflict, and to try to show that the situation in Lebanon is far worse than the Iraq situation. In fact, I note the assumption that the dark swarthy evil aggressors are attacking our ally and friend, who is defending itself. Makes sense to show the blood that results, as this shows us that “See? War to defend yourself against terrorists is hard and ugly…just like our war to defend our country!”
Of course, marketing is an inexact science, so I might be imagining paterns in random events…but it sure makes sense and fits the pattern that nothing is on TV that isn’t planned to be there, for a specific reason or reasons, that fit a commercial and/or political objective.

Way to go HopeSAT!
Dear Jane.
Just now pried out a slice of time to sit down and catch up a bit, so I haven’t even read any of the comments.
But I wanted to thank you for a wonderful post. Lowell Weicker has long been one of my all-time heroes. Sorry to hear he’s not feeling in the peak of health. He’s earned the right to take it easy and enjoy his days. He is, and always was, such a class act. He set a standard for which others should forever strive.
If there’s a way, please send on my best wishes to him. Never lived in CT, but often wished he could have been MY Senator.
Here you go, angie, hadda grab the salts back from ccmask, but there’re a few hits left in there.
All this talk about disguises has given me an idea.
Not the most mature idea, granted.
Given that we have a kiss float, it might be fun to have someone in a suit with a Bush mask show up to one of Lieberman’s few public events holding a sign saying he’s looking for another wonderful “Lieberkiss”.
Keep in mind, this would be all in good fun, like the float, not actually pestering Lieberman, just in the general vicinity.
In fact, I think Lieberman has an event scheduled for tomorrow that has actually been publicized…
thank. you. lotus…
Very true. But respectfully, I’d have to say I am much more concerned about the whereabouts of principled Democratic Party leaders. As for “principled Republicans”? These days that would seem a contradiction in terms. At least for me. Surely, there must be at least one decent Repug. Somewhere? Perhaps not.
I know: Baby steps.
But I think it was *Republicans* turning against Nixon that finally turned the tide and drove him out of office. I simply can’t see anything like that happening with Bush, which makes it a lot easier for the Republicans and the media to portray impeachment proceedings or even investigations as a “partisan witch hunt”.
WXYZ @ 142
Guess who cancelled? I shit you not, Lieberman cancelled his event in Pomfret. I haven’t got a link, just a good source.
Given that we have a kiss float, it might be fun to have someone in a suit with a Bush mask show up to one of Lieberman’s few public events holding a sign saying he’s looking for another wonderful “Lieberkiss”.
Are there Liebermasks? What if there were dozens of “Bushes” and “Liebermans” kissing each other everywhere Joe went?
wxyz:
marksb, imo, Hezbolah wants the media to cover this, so it’s a lot safer in Lebanon. They know over the long haul, every pic of a US made 155mm self-propelled Howitzer shelling apartment buildings works to their advantage.
Iraq is in a different situation, where no one wants sunlight, and that means kill all the journalists and photographers. JMO.
Gees how stupid are they denying entry to Jane and spazeboy? That’s a much larger infraction then letting them in.
As sorry as I am that you both were denied entry, I’m tingling with excitment about the response.
the Clinton Event was supposed to start at 4pm ET but M$NBC showed him live starting at 545pm. Bill is notoriously late…
hmm, there’s a private school in Pomfret and I have friends from So. Ct who send their kids there… big money people.
Okay — everyone take a whiff of the fdl smelling salts: Bill goes to Ct because that’s what party leaders do for incumbents. Occam’s razor.
Question is, what does he say in private. My bet: “Joe, I’m here out of personal and party loyalty. Whatever you did in the past, I owed you this much. But this is it, and this message is not just from me. Got it? If you make us come back for Lamont, we will, and you’ll never be forgiven.”
Bill’s appearance was Joe’s last weapon to stop the slide. Either he turns it around, quickly or he’s done. Watch tomorrow papers. They gave banner front page to the Lamont surge, worth a ton of publicity in name recognition and positie images.
I’m hoping for a picture of Jane and Spazeboy being stopped at the door. they must have tipped off the reporters, and someone must have seen it. My bet is, it’s news tomorrow.
Eli, by the time Congress is in impeachment mode (i.e., next spring/summer), there won’t be more than a few Inhofe/Bunning-style “partisans” left over yonder, I’m thinking. The whole country — or near enough — will be howling for justice (with numerous hotter heads for out-and-out revenge).
I just hope Jane uses my word “LieberTroopers” in her posting about the Great Denial …

I like that idea but it really frightens me. I think it will frighten the populace also.
How about a compromise – they can just hold hands, not kiss.
I’ve always like Weicker. Here’s one CT Yankee’s thinking in a nutshell, which might also explain nutmeggers in general. We’re just a tad schizy, in that we’re all over the map when it comes to our choices for candidates be they Dem or Repub or we Dem or Repub.
I voted for Lieberman when he ran against Weicker. Lieberman had been a fantastic attorney general, and he was the Dem. To be truthful, I can’t even remember what Weicker was doing at the time that made me vote against him. I had liked him, so ya got me.
However, when Weicker turned indy and ran for governor, I voted for him over the Dem. I thought he had the most sensible plan for the state. And when in the office I thought he did a great job.
I mention all of this because one thing really matters here, the damn issues. The issues and particulars matter here and often times override party allegiance. In fact, CT isn’t really schizy, we’re more centered than most states, I think, which is also why I think this whole ridiculous “push from the far-left” storyline is the garbage creation of the national scene politicos. They don’t get us. They don’t get a state that isn’t savagely foaming at the mouth against the other party. Or that it just might actually be truly representative of the national polls on the war.
On the national stage, where Lieberman now plays, devisiveness is the story and he somehow sees himself as the great moderate…the go-between…master statesman, beloved by all.
He’s been MIA from CT for so long that he’s been shocked by a dose of meet the public. Suddenly, he realizes that his sentiments were not going to be tolerated above theirs. He was insulated and isolated and now running scared isn’t the half of it. He truly forgot that he was supposed to represent our views and positions and he hadn’t a clue that he had drifted that far from them.
Frankly, I think it’s a great wakeup call for all of Congress.
lotus, I don’t think they’ll be able to make that pivot. The best they’ll manage will be to not accuse the Democrats of treason.

denying Jane and Spazeboy entry was such a big mistake … they are rattled and then some!
I tell ya, Bill was meeting secretly with the black leaders pleading for their help to put down the rebellion.
Also, Jane, all you have to do is wear pearls the next time you want to attend a joey function. And clutch them.
How about a compromise – they can just hold hands, not kiss.
That could work. Or arms around each other. Just so long as they look very much like couples.
Which “they” are you talking about, Eli — the punditocracy? the Rovians?
I’m talking about the citizens.
Eli…143
“…it was *Republicans* turning against Nixon…” No denying that. Let me please be clear. I’m not interested in “Baby steps”. The thing that will quench my thirst for principled vindication is winning the up coming off-year elections and the 2008 presidency for the Democrats. And I want impeachment hearings. I would submit that it all depends on the Democrats taking back the Congress this fall. I am focused on playing the hardest of hardball with the Bush crowd and those Democrats who strumming the Republican chords. I want to see people in jail.
darkblack — wow, that is spooky.
Which “they” are you talking about, Eli — the punditocracy? the Rovians?
I’m talking about the citizens.
I thought you were talking about Congressional Republicans.
I am very much in favor of impeachment *if* the citizen demand for it is as you say. But if they force the issue before the citizenry is on board with it, the Rovian “witch hunt” backlash will be devastating.
From the Courant link a bit back:
Short Ride Joey quoted using the term ‘big fight’ twice. Once here:
…”"You know, I’m in a big fight here, and I understand that … and as our mutual friend who’s coming in later today, President Clinton, always reminds us, every campaign is about the future,” he said.
The most recent public poll rated the race a tossup with the wealthy Lamont, whose Web site boasts that he will give Connecticut, “finally, a senator who will stand up to George Bush.”"
——
My hunch is that though the big dawg has lots of charisma (that doesn’t help Joe) the people of CT have more resect for Lowell Weicker, Jr..
…among the Watergate ‘heroes’ do not forget John Dean’s testimony. A bit behind the wave, but there in full unadorned TRUTH.
Eli – 162
It seems that we are in agreement.
Now we can sit back and take credit for this if anyone actually picks up the modified kiss idea and runs with it.
It is something we can both take pride in.
And it would be a nice supplement to the float, which cannot go out in the rain and often turns into a cop magnet.
Real humans masked as Bushes and Liebermans could swoop into almost any event on a moment’s notice with little warning.
OK Kiddo … I want folks in jail too but I have little reason to believe the dems will send them there … and each pol who has voted for these crimes and who now endorses this criminal let the israelis have another week to finish their ethnic cleansing … bloody hands and they all stick together.
Jane should dye her hair and watch Stepford Wives a few times.
Crap, Eli, you took the words right out of my mouth. Oh, and I would have said them in complete seriousness.
[cue Secret Agent Man music]
Time for Jane and Spazeboy to start working this gig undercover. ;)
OK kiddo 164, what I meant by “baby steps” was that principled Republicans are too much to hope for, so we’ll just have to settle for principled congresscritters.
Unfortunately, with a Democratic senatorial caucus that effectively voted roughly 50% in favor of Alito when Bush’s approval ratings were around 40%, I have to ask what level of popular discontent it will take for the Dems to realize it’s maybe something they should act on. Not only is the Dems’ failure to oppose frustrating in its own right, but I believe it undermines their case in November and ‘08.

Bad news – I’m having difficulty finding any Lieberman masks online…
I can’t imagine why this would be.
siun, I’d really be interested in any fresh polling-results from Israel. Anybody seen any?
As I said the other night, I fear Olmert’s decisions over these last two weeks have written his country’s doom. Wonder where Israeli public opinion sits now.
Thanks HopeSAT, I had not seen it. I had not known about the kidnapping of the physician and the other citizen.
What the current Israeli government (with the full support of the Bush WH) is doing to the Palistinians reminds me so much of the Warsaw ghetto in WWII.
With that said, Israel is not a monolith, there are voices of reason such as the Jewish Voice for Peace.
HopeSAT, huge thank you for doing that.

Actually, it is rather good news that Lieberman canceled his attendance at the event tomorrow.
It signals that he may be going back into hiding.
If he had shown up, no matter what kind of flak people gave him, it would have signaled that he still has his fighting spirit.
Lieberman’s beginning to remind me of the mole in Kafka’s short story, “The Burrow”.
The last six weeks looks like a campaign of someone who wants to lose.

A point worth noting, and known well around these parts but not explicitly stated, is that Net Neutrality is a stance in favor of maintaining the status quo of ‘all packets are created equal, and handled and delivered with equal ‘priority’ from a website to your PC and vice versa. Sen. Ted Stevens chairs a committee that has a bill proposed that would create a ‘fast lane’ for certain packets (a way for Telecoms to extort cash from sites like Amazon, etc, thus double dipping – your subsription fee, plus vig from sites paying for the ‘premium’ upgraded speed of THEIR packets. Many ‘not for profit’ and educational sites and their users would suffer under second class packet status.
I think that sums up the situation as it stands. A vote FOR net neutrality is a vote to continue riding the Net as it exists now. The proposed Stevens bill is move to create brave new net and otherwise override the original design. (which, frankly, is what I objec to most…it’s a kludge solution for something that ain’t broke.)

How did I get through this night without the three of you and everyone else on this unforgettable Monday?
Now if punaise would magically appear with or without a pun like icing on the cake on the esssential and enduring fire dog lake.
If I knew how to do a YouTube, and knew a good female vocalist, I’d do a Joe Dirt big kiss video with the following lyrics:
You must remember this
A kiss is still a kiss
A sigh is still a sigh
The fundamentalists get high
When people die.
And when two lovers woo
They still say: “I love you”
Until our freedom fries
No matter who they’re torturing
Or outing spies.
Swiftboats and wiretaps – never out of date
Mouths full of bullshit – gays that we must hate
Lieberman needs Bush – and Bush needs Joe’s mandate
That no one can deny.
It’s still the same old story
Brave soldiers dead and gory
For a presidential lie
Osama will be someplace laughing
as our freedoms die.
