(Update: per CTBob in the comments, The Boxer events tomorrow are at 10:45 am, Sweet Rexie’s, 136 Washington St., Norwalk; 11:45 a.m. at the home of Sandy and Bob Goldstien, 86 Branes Rd., Stamford.)
. Congresswomen Marcy Kaptur and Maxine Waters campaigned yesterday for Ned Lamont. It was exceptionally brave to buck the party and do so, though yesterday’s Rasmussen results indicate the decision might be quite politically pragmatic (YouTube above by CTBlogger). Introducing her is state rep. Peter Tercyak who jammed last night with his band comprised of other state reps. Chris Donovan, Ken Hewitt and Andy Woodcock called — yes — "The Bad Reps" at the Quality Time Cafe in Meriden. Lemme tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the CT house majority leader belt out "I Wanna Be Sedated."
. Barbara Boxer, on the other hand, is attempting to sneak into Connecticut on the same day that Bill Clinton is, hoping he’ll draw all the fire and she will escape attention. Think again, Barbara.
From the Stamford Advocate:
Both Democratic candidates will be in Waterbury tomorrow, with Lieberman joining Clinton for a rally at the Palace Theater and Lamont meeting with supporters at a local restaurant. Boxer, popular with liberals and women’s groups, will campaign with Lieberman early tomorrow at a candy store in South Norwalk and at a fundraiser at a Stamford resident’s home.
The "fundraiser at a Stamford resident’s home" is obviously one of those famous canned Lieberman afraid-of-his-own-constituents events, but if I were a betting woman I’d say local residents are correct and the candy store is Sweet Rexie’s. If it is, I think she can count on seeing just how popular she is with liberals and women’s groups on YouTube shortly thereafter.
For decades, Joe Lieberman has been one of the most reliably boring human beings on the face of God’s earth, speaking monotonously about how we were all having way too much fun playing games such as "Grand Theft Auto VI: Shoot Jessica Simpson and Take Her Lexus" and listening to Snoop Dogg CDs such as "I Just Called to Say I Love You, So Let’s Shoot Jessica Simpson and Take Her Lexus."
Recently, though, he has been not so boring and even borderline interesting, making out with the president at the State of the Union Address and professing his love for Condoleezza Rice, an African-American woman half his age. If this trend continues, six years from now he will be covering his naked body with chicken fat and trampolining on Oprah’s couch while he screams about his desire for Anne Coulter. We don’t want to be there for that.
Okay, where’s the bleach…
. If you wanted to see Joe and Big Dog at their canned event in Waterbury tomorrow, you had to provide your social security number as identification. Biggest yuck of the day has to be Matt Smith talking about how Joe is beloved by his constituents. It doesn’t seem to be a two-way street….
. While Holy Joe is preening about media transparency, he’s steadfastly avoiding conflict-of-interest inquiries from the press about Mrs. Lieberman. Kevin Rennie in the Hartford Courant:
This revelatory primary campaign will grow rougher in the next two weeks. The Lieberman campaign wants to pose, but declines to answer, uncomfortable questions. For example, why was Lieberman’s wife, Hadassah, working at Hill & Knowlton in 2005? She is no longer with the lobbying public relations powerhouse, but for a while she served as a senior counselor there on health care issues.
What clients she advised is a well-guarded secret. My attempts to find out specifics went unanswered this past spring and again this past week. The New York Observer picked up a thread of the story in a devastating column earlier this month on Hill & Knowlton’s clients and Sen. Lieberman’s cozy relationship with the pharmaceutical industry. (The firm has also represented Enron and the Saudis.)
These sorts of employment and political relationships are common in Washington families, but they can cause questions at home when you are in a primary battle. The campaign declined to answer how the Liebermans guarded against conflicts of interests in their jobs
Given how badly local media got suckered by Lieberman into promoting the non-story about Ned’s Halliburton stock (which Holy Joe also owns), you think out of pride alone they’d all be following up on this stuff. We’ll be watching to see who’s naughty and nice; the one-sidedness of this coverage, and the mindless xeroxing of Holy Joe’s press releases, is getting a bit old.
Our modern-day version of Mr. Smith goes to Washington is a capable and genial fellow who holds his ground without stooping to the base level of the other guy. When the other guy tried to denigrate Lamont for being a rich white boy, Lamont responded with a self-deprecating ad in which his family made fun of him. Toward the conclusion of the ad, Lamont steered the discussion back to a real issue, saying: Let’s both support the winner of the Aug. 8 Democratic primary.
The effectiveness of the Hillsman karaoke ad and Ned’s affable, dorky keyboard performance in Willimatic on Thursday is going to make going even more negative one hell of an uphill hump for out-of-towners Marian Steinfels and Sean Smith. BTW, what is it about Holy Joe that he’s always got some angry, repressed, badgering little woman running his show? Must be a character tic.

Wow. I can die now.
Lemme tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the CT house majority leader belt out “I Wanna Be Sedated.”
Oh. My. God.
From the bottom of the last thread:
Forgive me if this has been covered already, but have you seen Joe Klein’s piece in Time? It’s not half bad and should cause Joementum some dyspepsia at dinner tonight.
I do believe the Kiss Float made a deep impression on him!
http://www.time.com/time/colum…..015,00.htm l
I thought the media was angry at Joe — are they parroting his press releases? Ugh. He has all the organization (dem and politicos and corporate) supporting him. Hopefully the regular people will get a clue. The polls show they are but I do worry about everyday people just reading the paper and ‘believing’ what they read.
Hopefully the regular people will get a clue. The polls show they are but I do worry about everyday people just reading the paper and ‘believing’ what they read.
It will be interesting to see what happens to the numbers if (as looks increasingly likely) Joe’s promise to run as an Independent becomes reality instead of hypothetical.
Look how great we’ve done in 4 short days:
http://nedlamont.com/blog/667/…..sphere-day
Dollar for dollar match runs until the primary Aug 8th.
GO NED GO!
Joe Klein — looks at Joe Lieberman, looks at the cocktail weenies. Looks again at Joe Lieberman, looks back at the cocktail weenies. Looks really really hard at Joe Lieberman, looks longingly and forlornly at the cocktail weenies.
Joe Klein makes his choice — cocktail weenies, baby; cocktail weenies!!! Old Joe goes over-board!!!
Let this be a lesson to the Beltway Pundits — never get in between an out of touch politician and their pissed off constituents; the cocktail weenies that are in jeopardy my be your own . . .
heh . . .
Peter Tercyak was a nursing school classmate of mine, and came to my wedding. We also took microbiology together over the summer to get it over with since we we both working full time and going to nursing school. He is terrific.
Let this be a lesson to the Beltway Pundits — never get in between an out of touch politician and their pissed off constituents; the cocktail weenies that are in jeopardy my be your own . . .
Why didn’t I ask George Soros why he doesn’t use his vast fortune to build up the largest repository of cocktail weenies the world has ever seen?
*smacks forehead*
I used to be so proud of at least one of my U.S. Senators. Now with Boxer supporting every reactionary Democrat– and like the DCCC– ignoring progressives, I’m not sure what to make out of her. At least I know I won’t be writing her any more checks. Her lustre is very much tarnished by embracing the Bush agenda through Lieberman. I’ll be interested in seeing how soon after August 8th she’s back in Connecticut doing penance by campaigning– publically and vigorously in the bright sunshine– for Ned.
Ray Hackett, Norwich Bulletin reporter on his blog, hackettonpolitics.blogspot.com:
“The Boxer events are at 10:45 am, Sweet Rexie’s, 136 Washington St., Norwalk; 11:45 a.m. at the home of Sandy and Bob Goldstien, 86 Branes Rd., Stamford.”
I can’t believe I missed “The Bad Reps”. Sigh. I hope they jam again before election day.
Jane — great youtube of the congresswoman and Ned. She was great, and he keeps getting better and better. Thanks for the update and all you’re doing.
fyi — I think Kathryn from MA and Selise were down in Willimantic again today, helping the Ned folks.
Howie, will you be giving any BBoxer primary challengers a good hard look in… um, whatever year she’s up for re-election?
Chris Matthews show on NOW will be talking about Lamont ; )
scarecrow,
please don’t die now, you’ve become part of the family. Yes, being noticed by George Soros is big, only a half dozen comments got that kind of attention. Wallow in it. Treat yourself to something special, but don’t die.
(((hugs)))
deb
Barbara Boxer will have learned her lesson by, um . . . August 9th?
Eli (#16), I don’t think it’s gotten that bad yet– and if she campaigns for Ned after August 8, I’m sure we can all forgive her (although not enough to ever give her any more money). She’s done a lot of good. This stunt just takes a lot of the positives away as far as I’m concerned. Her voting record still speaks for itself and she was the only senator who had the… guts to stand with the Congressional Black Caucus when they challenged Bush’s theft of the 2004 election. Whoever is giving her the advice to go out on a limb for reactionaries like Lieberman and Leonard Boswell must be a real Inside-the-Beltway idiot!
Jane, you’ve seen this that *ilson (I think) showed us last thread, right?
No More Joe
‘Dead Wrong’ On The War And Defense Of Bush, White House Excesses
By IRVING STOLBERG
July 23 2006
Joe Lieberman and I have been friends and colleagues for 38 years. We ran for and won seats in the Connecticut legislature as a team of reformers in 1970. He was my state senator and I was his state representative. He rose to Senate majority leader as I became speaker of the House. With others, we formed the Caucus of Connecticut Democrats, a progressive coalition, to further the causes of peace in Vietnam and justice at home.
I have supported him in every election he has had – until now. This year I am supporting Ned Lamont to unseat Joe.
. . .
Irving Stolberg served two separate terms as speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives in the 1980s.
Lemme see, I bleeve the word is . . .
WOOT!
Just curious. Have the Connecticut papers made their endorsements yet? If so, what were they?
If not, can anyone hazard a guess how the endorsements will go?
scarecrow at 5:27
I completely agree.
That youtube illustrates the grind of a campaign. It’s looking for a crowd and then talking to them over the background/street noise. Ned can close. You gotta ask and he did. He’s firm, but polite, that’s what we want.
OT: The latest poll numbers blew me away. Not only is Ned kicking Whinerman’s ass in the primary, they are tied in the general. Gee, and to think of all the worrying I did over the Naral, PP, and labor endosements Joe got just before those polls were taken.
“Boxer, popular with liberals and women’s groups,…”
now there’s a journamalist who stays on top of things!!
Joke Line’s still a joke, pushing the nonsense about how opposition to Lieberman is all about Iraq. Baloney. Opposition to Lieberman is for all kinds of excellent reasons, Iraq being only one of them.
Fair enough, Howie. I agree that it’s completely out of character, which is why I suspect it’ll be hard to find an upgrade.
My theory about Joe’s extraordinary sexual magnetism has not been getting much traction for some reason.
RE Klein’s piece, ya gotta love the opening:
On a brain-foggingly hot Sunday afternoon in July…
What does he blame it on in the winter?
kirby — I am rather fond of Tercyak myself. he has a poodle named Spike. We talk groomers and general dog shop.
Deb — I got a first first. It wasn’t soros.
John Casper #23:
Best of all, Ned as a candidate “has legs” or, to use the sports term, a “high ceiling”. The more undecideds get to know him, the better they like him. And he just keeps learning and improving as a campaigner. I bet if they had another debate, he’d kick Joe’s pseudo-donkey.
Eli (#26), please, you’re going to make me heave. By the way, of the $282,481.13 Ned’s campaign has raised through ACT BLUE, $57,343.31 comes from the Firedoglake, Crooks and Liars, Down With Tyranny combined Blue America Page. Is someone good enough at math to figure out the percentage? And our donations come from 1,293 people.
Chris Matthews Show…next up, stem cells. After that, Lieberman/Lamont. CNBC
please, you’re going to make me heave.
This is what everyone says. I’m mystified.
Lemme tell you, you haven’t lived until you’ve heard the CT house majority leader belt out “I Wanna Be Sedated.”
JoMo took the stage to sing “I wanna be adored”, but it came out “I demand to be adored, and respected for my principled stands against my constituents”–totally threw off the rhythm
20.3% at an average donation of $44.35 per throw.
Boxer, popular with liberals and …
Should read, “Boxer, formerly popular with liberals and…”
Should read, “Boxer, formerly popular with liberals and…”
She’s a petitioning liberal now.
My theory about Joe’s extraordinary sexual magnetism has not been getting much traction for some reason.
That’s because you are looking for answers in all the wrong places.
Have you checked with Gannon/Guckert? David Dreier? GW Bush? Any other gay bashing closeted GOoPers?
think anybody will ask JoMo what he thinks about his former endorser WFBuckley calling for Bush’s resignation?
“I don’t think it’s gotten that bad yet.”
I agree.
If we start kicking Barbara Boxer, who is left?
I still think Whinerman, Schumur, and DiFi are bigger problems. When deep blue state Democratic Senators move to the center, it leaves people like Boxer and Feingold more exposed. I suspect Boxer is afraid of all that neocon money focussing on the “most liberal” Democrats, meaning her. Everybody remembers Daschle losing. Since Schumur, Whinerman, and DiFi have left her exposed, I guess she figures campaigning for Whinerman is about the least expensive inoculation she can try.
The video shows Lamont maturing as a candidate. He’s finding his sea legs, speaking and moving with confidence and power.
Folks if you can come up to CT for a few days it could really make a difference.
LAMONT SURGE!!
seepeesate 25
Klein will always be a joke unless he stops being so all-about-Joe-Klein. I mean, that’s some awfully self-conscious writing, there.
But what I take away from his piece (trying to put myself in the mind’s eye of my friends Pete, who will read this in Time, and his wife Cyndi) is that he really, really tried to find something good to say about HoJo, but all he could come up with is that he’s convinced he is a nice guy and he has always voted for him – - or something like that.
Talk about damning with faint praise! He basically said that HoJo is a tired, old, has-been who has lost whatever passion he ever had for his job.
Whew. With friends like those, . . . .
has a poodle named Spike.
A poodle named Spike — hmmm . . . does Spike know any of Holden’s Goth Ponies?
Al-Scooter 30
If they have another debate, I hope Ned brings the keyboard.
Wow.
Hello from West Memphis, AR. I wonder if Barbara Boxer is just naive, or truly operating within the incumbency protection racket. This goes to Jane’s comment of Ms. Boxer asking why everyone was asking about Lieberman. She appeared out of the loop. Perhaps Joe will attempt to keep her in the bubble to get as much mileage out of her as possible, with complete disreguard to the damage it may cause Ms. Boxer–this is all about Joe, after all.
He’s pulled ahead amazingly quickly. This is a blast to watch even from way out here in AZ. Thanks for the Daily Ned.
I’m not sure who here in Cali Babsie would fear. No matter how much money the GOParty wants to spend, they’d need a credible candidate. Arnold’s all by himself, and only because he went sprinting back to the center after his disastrous affair with the wingnuts.
Dangit, I missed the book salon. Oh well at least I was at An Inconvenient Truth with the beautiful girl I can’t have. The movie was stunningly well done, tight and powerful as hell.
quotes worth repeating – Paul Craig Roberts, via Wolcott:
I will never forgive Joe Lieberman for undercutting John Murtha and muffling the urgency of Murtha’s warnings about how rapidly Iraq was unraveling by issuing one of his classic mushmouthed pieties. He immediately gave the White House and the War Party bipartisan cover, helping ensure the policies that weren’t working would continue not working as the death-toll tabulator rose and rose.
I’ll never forgive the bastard either. Kick his ass to the dustbin, Ned!
Jane, I’m ready for YOU to back the party too. What if the party picks Lieberman? Are you ready to back him? If you’re not, it’s a little hypocritical to worry about who’s planning to back Lamont if he wins.
Make the commitment now. You’re either gonna support the party’s choice or you’re not.
[ Moderator: dear Lieber-Troll — Jane has already stated she will back the Democratic nominee of Aug.8 — it’s a pity your guy Lieberman won’t make the same commitment. Does http://www.ConnecticutForLieberman.com sound familiar? Go ahead, click it — it won’t bite! ]
My theory about Joe’s extraordinary sexual magnetism has not been getting much traction for some reason.
“Stay the course,” because “we’re coming to a turning point.”
i love when i scoop jane.
also, check out how connecticut african-americans don’t particularly enjoy joe’s record.
and, as i’ve said before, if brooks and kondracke, et. al., want to think blogs are the reason for lieberman’s problems, when someone asks if you’re a god, you say “yes.”
Dangit, I missed the book salon.
You wouldn’t have gotten much satisfaction on the left-wing (or at least not right-wing) media empire question, I’m afraid…
OFG
OT: I used to make the trip from Austin to Bristol, TN twice a month, and one night coming west through West Memphis, I saw the most amazing light display in the sky.
Every possible color and it took up about 1/4 of the visible sky dome.
I scanned every radio station withing reach and nobody said a word.
Spent the night at the dogs welcome motel in Brinkley and the morning paper said what I saw was a derelict Russian space capsule crashing out of orbit and burning up in the atmosphere.
Not very romantic but, dang, it was beautiful.
I know that highway by heart and could probably drive it blindfolded.
Be safe.
Boxer? Did somebody say ‘Boxer’?…
——
“”Ding! Lamont comes out to meet Lieber
But Lieber starts to retreat
If Lieber goes back any further
He’ll wind up in a ringside seat
Lamont swings to the left
Lamont swings to the right
Look at the kid
Carry the fight
Lieber keeps backing
But there’s not enough room
It’s a matter of time
Then Lieber lowers the boom
Now Lamont lands to the right
What a beautiful swing!
And deposits Frazier
Clean out of the ring
Lieber’s still rising
But the voters wears a frown
For he can’t start counting
Till Lieber comes down
Now Lieber disappears from view
The crowd is getting frantic
But our radar stations have picked him up
He’s somewhere over the Atlantic
Who would have thought that
When they came to the fight
That they would have witnessed
The launching of a neocon satellite!”
——
“DOWN GOES LIEBER! DOWN GOES LIEBER!”
Boxer casually agreed months ago to come to CT for Whinerman before the Lamont kerfuffle blew up — Joe’s holding her to her promise. I’m sure her participation isn’t wildly enthusiastic these days …
Ralphie, are you ready?
God, I am so glad to hear that, because well, I have been so very concerned.
You know Ralphie, reading comprehension can be fun.
Ned has already stated, repeatedly, that he will support the winner of the Dem primary. Jane supports Ned.
What’s so hard to understand about this?
I suggest you park that “hypocrite” line until you have reason to take it out.
If you don’t apologize to Jane, very directly, and very quickly, I’m going to be developing some more concerns about you.
Ralphie 49
New to these parts?
This has never been an issue as long as I’ve been here at the lake.
I’m going to defend the Beltway Dem punching bags.
The reason they disappoint us is conditioned response — everytime they stick their necks out, the GOoPers try to take their heads off. What do their fellow Democrats do? Dive for cover, if they are not sticking a Lieber-shiv in their backs (and I’m looking at you, Obama).
What do the Beltway Dems learn from this? Don’t stick your necks out!!! Play it safe, and everything will be hokey-dokey.
At least it was, until the rabid venomous bloggers showed up.
In 2001, I sent a fax to Senator Schumer, saying he should oppose Ashcroft for AG because the DoJ needs to secular, and a uber-Xtian wing nut was a bad choice. Chuck Schumer used that line of attack, and guess what? He got nuked by the wing nut Xtians, and not a single Democrat came to his defense. What did he learn from his experience? You got it . . .
Anyway — we are engaged in a great Civil War, and behavior modification therapy for Beltway Dems and Pundits and Journos is but one of the fronts we are fighting on.
Now, if we can just corner the cocktail weenie market . . .
oilfield guy at 45,
i like to think, too, that boxer is just out of the loop.
she’s done a lot of good, i can’t believe she’s that entrenched in incumbency.
but i wouldn’t put that past her.
ralphie at 49, i could be wrong, but i believe fdl has always maintained they will support the democratic nominee chosen in august.
Sharkbabe,
I’ve thought a little about our foreign policy blunders and have settled on this:
The bodies are stacking up like cordwood due to Dubyas failed foreign fiascos. The only stacks taller are the dollars it cost to pile up the bodies.
Well, editing prowess needs work I guess…but it was the thought…
Cozumel, good to see you!
Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.
we are engaged in a great Civil War, and behavior modification therapy for Beltway Dems and Pundits and Journos is but one of the fronts we are fighting on.
I still prefer the first version, but the second one is growing on me.
btw, i love when i scoop jane.
and, since kondracke and brooks, et. al., think blogs are the reason for all of lieberman’s troubles, when someone asks if you’re a god, you say “yes.”
Twenny-twenny-twenny-four hours a-go-oh-ho
I wanna be sedated!
Damn, Hillsman has to work that puppy into an ad somehow.
OK, you say, I could come up to Connecticut (or down for you lovely New Englanders) but what difference would that make? Isn’t Ned supposed to win the primary?
First of all, it ain’t over til it’s over. Strange things can happen on election day, so I hear.
More important, we want Lieberman to lose by a huge margin, so Clinton and others can force him out of the race. The bigger the loss, the easier it will be to make him step down. It also affects the amount of money coming in to support Lieb for the general election. No one likes the loser smell.
Come on down/up to Connecticut and help Ned win REALLY BIG. Bonus: meet Jane, Kobe, and Spazeboy :)

George Soros is behind the curve — as an uber-investor, he still believes in the power of rational markets; or at least, the self correcting power of irrational markets.
The problem with politics is that there are so many variables, and so many voters who rely on Corporate Media Propaganda, that it’s a long hard slog to correct the imbalances.
What I was hoping for in today’s Book Salon, was to educate George Soros as to the value of blogs, and the imbalance in the media markets. Hopefully, he will see that, and make some investments at useful inflection points.
What egregious said at 6:06.

Now, if we can just corner the cocktail weenie market . . .
That’s what we need George Soros to do! Then either the political establishment will have to spend their campaign funds dry on high-priced weenies (literal ones, unlike now), or they’ll have to cut the pundits off, and they’ll go, to borrow a phrase from classic Bloom County, “all higgledy-piggledy!”
Eli 52 – ya big tease…well I was gonna go read the thread anyway…
Oilfield Guy – more and more I’m tending toward the “it’s not blunders, it’s exactly the profitable death and mayhem they want” camp.

I think that might be a possibility. I got the impression that he absolutely does *not* want to be a media mogul (Doesn’t want the responsibility? Too far outside his comfort/competence zone?). But he could still be a big help as a behind-the-scenes guardian angel/silent partner.
John Casper, thank you, you’ve been there for me since I was a newbie getting hammered for egregious mistakes in my initial comments.
Possibly you don’t remember, I was expressing anguish about a combination of pardons and rigged elections thwarting everything we were trying to accomplish. Of course people swatted me off like an insect. You stood up for me, saying I was seeing the wave that was farther out there.
The world needs more people like you. :)

I don’t really know what Soros does or doesn’t support – except the references in the article by Luskin’s journalist ;) to the Democracy Alliance.
To start with – if he does NOT support DLC and DCCC etc. – that in and of itself is worth a boatload IMO. Next, if they do support an organization like CREW – again, worth a huge lot.
When I hear about candidates like John Laesch, or Rick Penberthy or Tester or many of the others that Howie has brought to our attention, it would be very nice if there was a way to tap a source like that – if not for big $$ at least for matching $ from the netroots fundraisers.
Maybe some non-DLC consultant group backing – like Ned’s adguy and Feingold’s non-DLC consultant. A stable of winners that provide an alternative.
But for now I’m just happy that DLC is getting the message that they are not the only game intown.
Eli –
In 2004, Soros was one of the big donors to ACT and the Harold Ickes initiatives. Those were the best old school programs going, but they did not deliver.
It will be hard to get Soros to see the value of the new/alt media — but we may have made a Quantum Leap today.

Hi All.
I read FDL all the time, but have only commented a couple of times. Can someone tell me why there’s another Ralphie commenting on this thread at #49? Not only would I not ask Jane that question, I don’t like the approach.
My youtube has just now loaded the Ned part – great job Mr. LAMONT!
The poll is already obsolete. The only thing that keeps Ned from polling ahead on the 3way race was people getting the reaffirmation from each other of seeing that it was “ok” to support someone other than Leiberman. There may be a minor Clinton bounce, but Clinton was on the wrong side of the al-Qaeda situation by letting Limbaugh et al derail him from an appropriate respsonse then, and he’s on the wrong side of the Iraq war.

My take is he’s not interetsed AT ALL in compounding the “media problem”, i.e. Faux News and tabloid cabel news trash in general. But rather fixing what already exists. Demanding it. I agree. We don’t need more, we need better, IMO.

What’s the deal with having to provide a SS# to get into the Sore Loser and Big Dog show? I followed the link but the story doesn’t talk about it.
In the days of Rampant Identity Theft what are they doing with those numbers and isn’t it against some law especially if the government (i.e. law enforcement providing so-called security) is demanding the numbers?
That’s very creepy!

Social Security number is needed for people who will be near current and former Presidents. This is a long-standing policy.

The year it stops working will be a very, very bad one for the Republicans. I think it would help if Democrats called them on it more often.

I live in Marcy’s district, the Toledo, Oh area. She is an old fashioned labor Democrat from an old fashioned rust belt town. She’s probably one of the safest encumbants in congress, and therefore is frequently willing to stand against the party, especially those who stray from the party’s pro-union roots. Most famously, against Clinton during the NAFTA debate.

*ilson46201 in 55 raises a possibility I hadn’t thought of when, feeling betrayed a couple weeks ago, I unsubscribed from Boxer’s PAC for Change. Maybe Boxer casually agreed months ago to come to CT for Whinerman before the Lamont kerfuffle blew up — Joe’s holding her to her promise. I’m sure her participation isn’t wildly enthusiastic these days.
Fact or fantasy?
My fruit baskets are delivered by guys in black suits. I don’t hold much against the big pols going to ‘help’ Lieberman until I see what they do and can learn more of the story later. They have wheels and deals in motion, so it’s hard to say why Boxer is doing it. Let’s see what she does and how much she does to nullify any effectiveness of her being there. I have to admit that the Biden no show set a very high bar for going through the motions.

This makes no sense
http://tinyurl.com/h7xxt
The article accuses Jordan of torturing for the US. That part does make sense. Here’s the part that makes you wonder how they stretched 87 pages out of this concept:
U.S. officials have acknowledged flying up to 150 of the most serious suspected terrorists from one country to another, but said they receive “diplomatic assurances” from authorities that they will not use torture on the detainees they receive.
Ok, so we have 150 top terrorism suspects, but instead of keep them and investigate we fly them around. Only to places that do not torture. What’s that you ask? WHY – are we flying them around. Uh, yeah, well, hmmmm, lesseee. We had the planes see. And it seemed like we should do something with them?
But not take them where they would be tortured. If you say it 87 pages worth of times, it starts to make sense.
In an 87-page report filed in January with a United Nations committee, the United States insisted it is “unequivocally opposed” to torture and that its commitment to the ban “remains unchanged.”

Soros made a very good comment today -about how Lieberman was instrumental in blocking a half-way decent congressional resolution on Iraq. He has done that kind of thing so often. Really serious damaging undercutting of centrist or mainstream efforts (forget about liberal), and then trying to hide the mess with meaningless votes. There was something that Leiberman did *before* his vote on Iraq that really steamed me, and that was the first thing Soros said. I dunno what Lieberman thinks he has been trying to accomplish, but all his history has come back and blown up in his face.

Does it make any difference what this “group” says?
Only if it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.
They are getting in the game now, but they really lost the initiative over torture right up front. Much more noise, much earlier, would have been better IMO, and this is one of the “lesser sins” but it’s still good to know the group is recovering from its bout with laryngitis.
Egregious, America’s noble self-image works against us. Most Americans refuse to believe that the Beacon Of Freedom And Democracy could ever, *ever* do anything evil. So anything that *appears* evil must be some kind of illusion or misunderstanding.
This is why so many people are eager to seize upon the flimsiest Republican explanation or rationalization, so they don’t have to believe the worst of their beloved country.
I don’t really have a fix for this, just diagnosing.

Olmert tells Cabinet he expects campaign to ‘take a very long time’
BEIRUT: Israeli Premier Ehud Olmert said Sunday that the current Israeli offensive against Lebanon would “last a very long time,” as he addressed a Cabinet meeting Sunday. According to a senior Israeli government official, Olmert said: “The diplomatic process will not come at the expense of destroying infrastructures of terror and this process will take a very long time.”

Followed up on your ‘when someone asks if your a god’ post and this line jumped off the page…
from an article describing why ‘the blogs’ have influence.
“sentiment simmering just below the surface”
I’d say that phrase just about describes a huge portion of society that are sick of media and political manipulation, and that there is a pressure ’simmering’ to change the source of that manipulation.
The longer deception is used as an instrument of war against the general population the greater and more widespread the ’simmering sentiment’ will become.
People generally know their being lied to, even if they don’t figure it out at first, eventually the truth comes out.
Isn’t that why the saying about justice is ‘to let the truth come out’ ?
Well, if Olmert says this will take a long time, I expect ethnic cleansing on a major scale. Or occupation. Or both.
looseheadprop @ 7:40 pm (#204) – Ahhh. They’re so cute when they’re not eating the furniture …
Eli at 251,
Totally agree. Most Americans, and I include my highly educated extended family, cannot imagine that we are anything other than noble and pure. To suggest that we are acting in support of money and raw power and nationalism either here or in Israel is met with total denial.
That’s why I am fond of urging us to receive with open arms those who have come to a new understanding of the propaganda thrown our way.
One year ago, would most have us thought that (1) our own government would take us to war based on lies; (2) there could even be the possibility that elections could be stolen on a state and even national level; (3) that we are the aggressors in war. OMG.
OT: Arlen Specter has an Op-Ed up about eavesdropping at washingtonpost.com. Summary: It’s hard work being all talk!
The Israeli offensive should dovetail nicely with a robust US offensive in Iraq and the continued bellicosity towards Syria and Iran. If one were an Arab or a Muslim, one might get the idea that “ethnic cleansing” was making a big comeback, Slobodan or not.
