UPDATE: Crooks and Liars has the Bolten video on this — well worth a watch.
Tim Russert was on a high simmer this morning on Meet the Press. No biscuit for him today — but he scored anyway. (And, frankly, I was left wondering if Russert has been reading Jane?)
Pressing Joshua Bolten, WH Chief of Staff, on the hypocritical inconsistencies in President Bush’s veto of the stem cell bill, and the comments by Tony Snow that the President thinks that the destruction of human embryos for research purposes is murder — Russert hit the nail on the head by asking why, then, the President doesn’t outlaw in vitro clinics and all stem cell research if he truly believes that it is murder.
After Bolten began stammering his way through a non-answer dodge and weave tap-dance-a-thon, I realized something: their soft underbelly is showing on so many fronts, the message machine is no longer working with rapid-fire precision.
Bolten tip toed through any number of questions this morning on the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, the mess in Iraq, our lack of any diplomatic or foreign policy initiatives that come close to working…and then the questions on stem cell research, where Bolten tried very hard to say nothing that would offend anyone, and succeeded in offending people who think science ought to be respected and the entire evangelical base by exposing the Bush failure to walk his smarmy, hypocritical talk about respecting life while allowing more than 400,000 blastocysts to be destroyed via in vitro clinics.
No one likes to learn that they’ve been played for a fool — here’s hoping that the hypocritical differences between the public statements supporting "life" and the real actions which do no such thing other than at a surface level to do Presidential political CYA for public relations purposes hit home with the evangelical crowd.
The message: we’ll do only as much as we have to do to make the fundamentalists happy, but we really don’t walk our talk. (Remember how Michael Scanlon talked about the evangelical political machine via Ralph Reed? Oh yeah, hypocrisy, thy name is Republican.)

Why no biscuit for Timmeh? He worked hard today
lhp – I’ll give Timmeh a little bisquit – he’s at least trying… how’s the pup doing?
LHP at 4 — because today he earned his way out of “lapdog” status for the entire show. Good on him! No biscuit = good job.
On other coast, Christy, watching now. Bolten also stammered a bit when asked about statements by the Lebanese Ambassador. I think you’re right – there’s nothing consistent about the Admin’s statements on any front now, they are completely defensive.
Great having Howie here, and great talk with BruceBraley yesterday!
And by the way, I thought Bolton was literally going to choke on his own tounge attempting NOT to give Timmeh a direct answer to the very direct question, “Does the Presnit actually believe what Tony Snowjob said – namely, that the Preshole believes using frozen embryos for stem cell research is murder?”
Bolton went off on a 5 minute obfuscation fest, attempting every trick in the book so as not to answer the question. When he was finished I’m sure that he thought that he had left Timmeh totally confused. But kudos to the Russ-man, he gave Bolton the stink-eye and directly, slowly and clearly repeated the murder question yet again. Sort of like how you talk to a simple child.
In the end, he must have asked Bolton the question at least 6 times, and NEVER got a simple answer to a simple question.
Sorry, Timmeh, but these crooks are pros.
Oh, sweet victory, to finally see a bushbot grilled and the emperor exposed on national teevee.
Thanks, Christy!!!!!
But what about The Rapture?!! These thieves may be vulnerable, but with Israel and Lebanon being on the front pages everywhere, the Bushies actually catch a “break”, speaking only from the cold, calculation of PR. Their base is happy, happy, happy with how the world is turning. Stem cell hypocrisy can’t rain on their parade, methinks.
Attaboy Tim
I suggest Congress reintroduce the stem-cell research bill, but limit new lines to (edited by CHS — e-mail me if you have questions) . . .
. . . since we’re all for supporting “life,” but only within limits . . .
I e-mailed John Amato at C&L — MtP hasn’t been on teevee as yet on the West Coast, but when it airs, I’m hoping he can snag a clip of this exchange for me. If he does, I will link it up for everyone. It was truly a sight to see…and Bloten was literally stammering, trying to stall for time to come up with viable spin. And he failed.
Did he stay after the question bc he thinks it is murder himself?
The MSNBC screen has the major headline of hte day. “Paris Hilton, Anti-Hero?”
Micahel Scott at 12– I’m sure that was meant as some sort of smack at the Bush Administration, but for me that was several steps too far. Just FYI.
Old Coastie
Baby Mittens is THE most precoscious puppy I have ever seen. Mamma dog is still mostly w/o maternal instinct and we have laid in a supply of puppy formula b/c we expect her milk to dry up soon. Other female dogs are starting to clean and warm the puppy. And the puppy loves sleeping on a human belly.
it’s starting to yip ( as opposed making wuffling noises) she is also trying so hard to stand up on all 4s instead of creeping on her belly.
Not even 10 days old, eyes still closed and already trying to walk and bark. and she is absolutley fearless. just a tough charming little tyke
LHP at 16 — I have a prediction on Baby Mittens — that you’ll have a new pooch of your very own, because she sounds like too much of a cutie to send to another home. :)
you just gotta keep her, lhp. she’s magic.
This whole Bolton (magical moustache man) debate in Congress…question:
This is just another attempt to get congressional approval so he’ll be permanent, right? Even if they don’t approve, he’ll still get to finish out his “current term”, right? When does that term end? Can Bush appoint him again afterwards, or will he be required to pick someone else?
Jumped over to Google news for a few minutes, and it was like entering a toxic waste dump, so I came back here.
Somehow this treatment of Bolton reminds me of a situation I was once in. I was doing a presentation on enrollment forecasts at a university, and the head of the anthropology department stood up when I was done, and said, “Gentlemen, that light you see at the end of the tunnel is a proctoscope.” Wonder if Bolton is thinking that today.

lhp 16, wonderful news! But now listen here, you gotta enlist your daughter if need be, cuz we want PIX!
PIX, I tell you!!!
PIX!!!
PIX!!!
PIX!!!
Christy and Anne
Baby Mittens belongs to the NYExH. he has a HERD of labs. Our house is way way over the legal limit for dogs in this town.
Having said that, I think once my daughter gets home, there will be a lot of lobbying on her part to keep Baby Mittens
…their soft underbelly is showing on so many fronts, the message machine is no longer working with rapid-fire precision.
The only thing that’s ever really given me hope about getting a spanner into Rove’s works is that the mathematics of deception won’t support it.
The Democrats in their present form can’t lay a glove on Karl, but he’s now in the process of punching himself out.
As for Mr. Potato Head, I wonder if the M$M has finally begun putting together two uncomfortable facts:
1. As long as they keep spouting the GOParty line instead of reporting reality, their audience will keep tuning them out; and
2. Their GOParty patrons will toss them under the bus just as soon as it’s expedient to do so, no matter how much cover they’ve afforded in the past.
Let’s hope the cabal will continue to pop some rivets and break some pipes as it pulls itself apart!
Has Bolten added a copy of the “groping Merkel’s neck” shot to his collection?
Baby Mittens is the most precious name I’ve heard in a long time, fitting I’m sure from what I read.
Gentlemen, that light you see at the end of the tunnel is a proctoscope.
Oh lord, there’s a keeper!
This is a great opportunity for a graphic show n’ tell –
Blastocysts are smaller than the period at the end of this sentence.
How many blastocysts will fit on the head of a pin? 10? 20? 50? 100? That’s what we are talking about — small clusters of cells that routinely get flushed away, a few of which are lucky enough to develop into a human being.
Methinks Timmeh could use a straight pin with devastating effect — exposing the Republican hypocrisy of their blastocyst fetish.
We took pix. I can’t figure out where to stick the memory stick into my laptop. My daughter stuck it in a port that turned out to be for sound media. We cannot find the right port.
lhp – good to hear the excellent puppy news! “personality” is a wonderful thing in a dog (my big guy was labeled as such – I was sure it was code for “Pain in the Ass” – but he grew up to the best dog ever).
Did you notice how Bolten head got a little sweaty while trying to explain the stem celll stuff?
Somebody please talk lhp through this search, okay?
I am having to steel my heart about having to give my six pitbabies — at about 2 months old, they are all cute and adorable and smart and sweet and …
My daughter named both Babay Mittens and Brigit.
I had to call her and tell her Brigit was dead. I did NOT tell her how the puppy died
I would assume the port is USB. Should be a group of 2-4 slots. Thin and about as wide as an index finger. Your moust might be plugged into one of them.
It sounds like Baby Mittens is meant for your daughter lhp.
Is the NYEX (not to be confused with NYX) is taking the herd with him? It would be sad to go from a house full of labbies to none.
That is to say…mouse.
*ilson
just remind yourself that there is absolutley no way you can give each puppy all the attention it needs and deserves.
You are GIVING THE PUPPY THE GIFT of family of it’s very own who will love it and play with it and make it the center of their attention.
Oh, lhp, what news of your trial?
“We cannot find the right port.”
I am a pretty much hopeless wrt to computers, someone will be along directly, though, to help you lhp. I just know it.
*ilson, you are so sweet!

You most likey need a device to connect to your laptop that can read the memory stick. Also, there should be a cord that you can connect your camera directly to your laptop and download the photos that way without a seperate device.
zergle
he stick in our camera is flat and wider than a USB port. it is a teensy bit narrower than the port we tried to use.
Just watched that brutal Bolten bashing regarding stem cells, and, for the first time in a LONG time, Timmeh kept sticking the dagger deeper and deeper on an Administration lackey
Whether or not this spine holds, who knows, but it sure was fun and enjoyable to watch, in the same way it’s fun to watch bullies and thugs get their much deserved comeuppance
fyi– John Dean on cspan2 right now on proto fascism.
hrm…refer to Millineryman at 42. Ya got me stumped.
Mary
he is not taking the herd with him. I am taking my daughter and leaving. I am giving him the house and moving to a a townhouse. the house is fairly large, on a nice sized piece of property and sighted in the woods near the beach. Ideal for the herd. All the herd belong to the NYexH
My daughter will get to visit her unchanged room on her daddy weekends and all the herd will be here for her when she comes.
Nope, the only pet I am taking is Gus, my daughter’s beta fish.

Oh yeah, and Ken Mehlman has outsourced our citizenship to Israel.
lhp, put the memory stick back in the camera. Find the cable that came with the camera to plug into your laptop.
You need a memory card reader if you want to take it out of the camera to upload you pics to the computer.
Zergle at 19: I believe Bolton’s recess appointment expires in January. There was talk a week or two ago that Bush might recess re-appoint him, which would be an unprecedented slap in the face to the Senate (unprecedented slap in the face number, what, 200? Quick, call Arlen Specter! We need him to say he’s gravely concerned and then write a bill to make it legal!)
It appears that instead, they’re going to try the “don’t change horsemen in the middle of the Apocalypse” ploy. I hope that the on-the-job evidence that Bolton is a member of the anti-Dale Carnegie “how to lose friends and antagonize people” school will have more effect than the evidence at the previous hearings that he’s a lifetime psychopathic jerk.
When the kid comes home later today, we will take some more pix and I may have to break down and ask the NYExH for tech help. He knows how to majik the pix out of the camera
How boffo is that, GSD!
ON LI for now. Near my mom, so my daughter can go to her house after school.
My daughter has been floating the idea of moving back into the city (something I certainly intend to do once she is off to college), but the immediate plan is to stay local. stay near the water.
There is an old Irish myth about the silkies (the seal people) who must live within the sound and smell of the sea. I thik we must be descended from them, because all of my sisters have moved heaven and earth to have homes within walking distance of the water, as have

I just read that the UK is parting from Bush on the Israel-Lebanon conflict. With this and other issues like stem-cell research the dikes are springing too many leaks for Rove to block with his twelve fingers and two hooves in November. I want to thank whoever posted that story about Wellstone and Lieberman yesterday. Those things need to come out, and we can imagine how many stories there are like that which we don’t know about.
Nice if the NYExH can make hisseff useful SOME way, lhp, cuz it sho ain’t birfin no puppies.
The other WA
Cable? there is a cable? Ohh that is tricky. What will those tech guys think of next?
lhp – what TheOtherWA said. Sounds like your memory card is an actual Memory Stick™, and unless you have a Sony laptop, it probably doesn’t have a port for it. The camera should have a USB cable.
Ahhh, I remember Joan Baez singing about the silkies when I was a child.
lotus,
usually he is totally involved with the puppies. And he has been better with this one since it became an upstairs dog.
I think it is so advanced because it is upstairs and getting so much stimulation

Watching Dean just trash the whole Repug presidential field. WHOOHOO
Lotus,
Ohio is considered THE presidential bellweather too. It is most likely pointing towards the national mood.
As to Josh Bolton, he looked like a high schooler giving a presentation that he hadn’t practiced enough. It looks like the B-teams’ boat is taking on lots of water, Rover is yelling “stroke, stroke” but Bush and reality keep shooting holes in the bottom of the boat.

the connecting cable from camera to PC is probably one of those special USB cables with the tiny connector (mini-B) that plugs into the camera. WindowsXP has a nice built-in program for downloading pix from a camera…
lhp – no, there usually is a special one for the camera – the end that plugs into the camera is little tiny…
Well good, lhp, she certainly deserves all the good she’s been belatedly getting.

“the Vice Presidency has swallowed the Presidency”

“‘Bout time” as to your 92, that was, angie.
The modern Sadducees are the Christian self-righteous, more than adequately represented by Bush and Reed. And they are a contemptible, violent, and pharisaical lot, of tramps indeed. In the language they profess to understand: ‘ one day they will be left to Heaven for submission to the punishment for which they are so richly deserving’. But first, I want them to get a little earthly, public flogging. Say impeachment, war crimes trials, and jail. A bit of their own sanctimonious medicine is in order.

He questioned him as if he were a Democrat.

lhp – you’re a good mom, good person. It sounds like your daughter is set, but I’m still sad you won’t be getting labby time. They are a postive (if you keep breakables away from the tail) energy charge.
I wouldn’t mind Barney Frank as AG, m’self.
Living in AZ, I am hearing from a lot of the “Goldwater” Republicans here and they are really are moving away from the wingnut leaders. I am hearing them on our Air America station saying “I will never vote for that maggot McCain again” and they are out there next to us prostesting at anti-war events.
The Repugs are right here with us on the voting issue because the vote fraud here was in my district in a Republican primary. Bradbog has been dogging that story but at this point the FBI has seized the ballots and the Feds swallowed that story. It is funny how “they” dont like election fraud when it happens to them!
another good guy, lotus!
I was stunned to see in the Post article about the Allen-Webb debate that Allen had said he was in favor of permanent bases in Iraq. (I’m not stunned that he’s for it, just that he would say it outright. However, he is none too bright, so it could have slipped out.)
However, looking at the actual transcript, he’s much more weasely:
I’m glad the Post got the true sense of “ultimately,” but I would have been happier if he’d actually been that honest and given us a direct quote to nail him on.
Oh Christy for AG. Fer sure.
And Bob Graham as DNI.
Tomgram: Karen Greenberg on Bush’s Redacted Reality
Imagine a government in which the names of those who worked as key aides in the office of the second (if not, arguably, the first) most important official in the country were not available. Oh gosh, there is such a government — and it’s ours. Journalist Robert Dreyfuss set out to do a report for the American Prospect magazine on the various individuals Vice President Cheney had gathered to help him run the most powerful vice-presidency in American history — functionally, his own shadow National Security Council — and when he called, asking for those names and their positions as well as possible interviews with them, here’s what ensued:

I don’t doubt that he would let me borrow a few whenever I want.
When I am doing the single mom thing, and the full time lawyer thing, the last thing I will need is the pressure of worrying about who will get home in time to feed and walk a dog.

The Husband and Wife construct comes from the house bound man, and the woman in his possession. Women as chattels, and all that.
Reading old Icelandic stories like Njal’s Saga, one can get a sense of where Northern European misogyny came from.
In The Landnama Bok (an oral history of the settlement of Iceland) there many stories of Aud the Good, a wealthy woman from Ireland who converted to Christianity, and was greatly respected as one of the Founding Mothers of Iceland. There are lots of other stories, too — academic libraries often have copies of the Vigfusson and Powell translation of Origines Islandicae — which is way cool, because the top half of the page is in Old Norse, the bottom half the English translation.

We had a lab with a really powerful otter tail once. i was cleaning out the cabinet with all the stemware and had it on the coffee table when he came walking through the living room and stopped wag his tail and say hi.
ALL the stemware went flying. not one piece survived. It looked like a TV sitcom

it is time we, the citizens playhardball with the loony right.
Here is what I propose and I think that it is “fair”.
Demand that within the year that they find the 40,000 women to become mothers of “snowflakes”.
If they can’t, then any of the remaining cells, get used for science.
Remember that these women should get NO government assistance. If a single women(god forbid) wants to become a “mom”, then she should set a good example and be able to pay her own way!

Have you read anything by William Ian Miller on Icelandic Saga literature? Miller is an incredibly entertaining and insightful guide to these marvellous stories. I highly recommend him. I believe his best known book on the subject is called “Bloodfeuds”.

Actually Diane,
I woul dbe afraid to give them ideas. I don’t want to be conscripted to house a snowflake for 9 mos (actually 10 lunar months) in my unwilling body
Roan Inish is one of my favorite movies. I love John Sayles pics in general, but RI is at the top of the list.
Just watched Timmah dismantle Josh Bolton. Weeee! How refreshing to see actual journalism. On the teebee, no less! Gonna send him a thank you note.
remember the good old days when the PLO and Fatah was “a terrorist organization” that neither Israel or the US would ever consider talking to or negotiating with?
Yes, Diane. Or, if you have 8 embryos stored, you and your hubby have to have all 8– and all the things associated with having 8 kidz. Otherwise, you go to jail.

uh oh– Sharon deteriorating acc to wulfie.
Ariel Sharon should have been allowed to die naturally months ago.
Mebbe Frist can help Sharon out.
Iceland was a democratic and egalitarian state, with annual meetings of the democratic assembly at the Althing. The Lawspeaker (Njal was one) gave opinions on legal precedent, and what could and could not be done.
Njal’s Saga tells of the descent into Civil War, that is eventually ended by the reconciliation of Kari and Flossi, the last heroes of the two warring camps.
Iceland started as a democracy, but was unable to keep it. They became a vassal state of the Danish king, and remained so for many centuries.
Meanwhile, in England the Norse ideal of democracy lived on, in the person of the Norman Nobility — who rebelled at the usurpations of King John. English (and American) Constitutional Democracy began with the Magna Carta, and evolved over the next eight centuries.
The idea that a BushCo army of occupation could impose a functioning democracy in Iraq was a laughable idea, with predictably tragic consequences.
Perhaps that’s a new way to implement national service, since wimmenfolk can’t be in combat: the government can force young healthy wimmen to carry at least one snowflake baby to term.
Atwood was right, this IS where they are going with this, isn’t it?
OK
Enough having fun with all of you.
Must do household chores, get some exercise and put in at least a couple hours on the book. Or the guilt will kill me.

Arial Sharon deteriorating? aha — thats why Hoekstra is there in Israel to keep them from pulling the plug — I so want Sharon to wake up briefly and be told Hamas won the elections in the Occupied Territories and Hezbollah rockets are hitting Tel Aviv …

Iceland only became an independent country during WW2 when the Brits occupied it after Denmark fell to the Germans. The Brits turned it over to the USA for tutelage and we finessed ‘freedom’ in 1944. The Danes werent happy about it postwar but what-the-hell …
Haven’t seen Timmeh myself, but isn’t today’s behavior the flip side of his TradMed entitlement: would he have treated Andy Card that way? I don’t think so. This was Timmeh’s way of letting Josh Bolten — and DeeCee — know who the Top Dog is in this relationship. Timmeh gets new-guy Bolten to submit to his alphamaleness, indicating to the entire tribe of teevee watchers who’s the real big man.
I bet Bolten is worshipping at the “Hands-of-Dear-Leader” altar this morning. Or whatever lonely Josh does to work off the stress….

Yes, Diane. Or, if you have 8 embryos stored, you and your hubby have to have all 8– and all the things associated with having 8 kidz. Otherwise, you go to jail.
No, you just have to pay perpetual maintenence for the freezer storage, until sometime in the 25th century when the emryo is decanted and grown for a couple months and Walt Disney’s defrosted head is grafted on.
Wait, that would be wrong. The embryos are decanted sometime in the 28th century to become part of George Bush XXIII’s billion strong clone army. Where the uniqueness of their lives can be treasured as they are thrown into the endless carnage of World War DCXI.
No daughter gets a snowflake baby until the Bush daughters get the first few.

Closing In On August 8

It’s a hot summer, but CT politics remain as hot as the weather. By now, folks have likely seen the Rasmussen poll reported by Political Wire.
A new Rasmussen Reports poll shows Ned Lamont (D) beating Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-CT) in the Democratic primary, 51% to 41%.
Here’s the stunning finding: In the general election, Lieberman and Lamont are tied with 40% with Alan Schlesinger (R) trailing behind with 13%…..
*ilson, don’t make me drive up to INdy and dismantle your clippers. Pits and Boxers with unclipped ears are the cutest.
The news throughout the ME is all depressing and very sad. I can understand how Rick or other’s in the military may have the best of intentions on saying that they feel we need to stay and do “something” for “the Iraqis who relied on us” and to just be able to leave a stable structure behind, but it’s blindness.
Whether it is the civil war there or the insurgency there, in either situation – there is no way for our soldiers to identify enemy. WIth that, there is no way they make the situation worse. In one of the cases that is being tried, it has come out that the Rules of Engagement included all “military age men.”
How do you add to the stability of a country when you are equally a source of danger to all the civilians there? And how do you address civilian on civilian violence without killing civilians?
How do you go from the “shock and awe” original gameplan that authorized use of souped up napalm, to destructions of cities like Fallujah and infrastructure, to the Abu Ghraib et al situations that the military warned DOJ would happen, to an Administration that still uses DOJ to push the theme that torture is humane treatment, shipments to Syria for torture are ok and the crime is mentioning them out loud, soldiers hate their occupied native population so they laugh at the punch lines of songs that include holding children up to take bullets in the brain, civilians are equally blown apart by terrorists, sectarian civil war violence, and US military seeking to “combat” each of the above, etc.
The fact that there are finally some voices that are focusing on the real issues and trying to truly decide what needs to be done to deal with the situation positively is almost more discouraging than if they were not, bc they are now just desparately gaming the “what ifs.” Even if any of the what ifs might have had a difference, once upon a time, we are now at a place where bodies and dollars and other threats and domestic needs and poor leadership on so many disparate fronts have all aligned to make any real opportunity to do anything substantively different is an illusion. And the fact still remains from that from the beginning, it was a doomed effort. Now, you take a doomed effort and add a military that hates the population they are there to “save.” And that cannot really evaluate and discriminate within the native occupied population – not only on ethnic, linguistic and religious elements – but even on the very dramatic Civilian v. Non-civilian issue.
Assaults and occupations that have no ability to distinguish civilian populations, even if they had desire to distinguish, are pretty fatally hamstrung. When the politicizing fed to the troops to guarantee Republican support is a demonization of all the population and when the day to day reality is constant attacks on the military from undifferentiated sources — even the desire to distinguish between the civilian population is lost.
That’s not the description of a force that will add stability.
and a bunch of idiotic nonsense being piped in to support the war effort which
Here’s the stunning finding: In the general election, Lieberman and Lamont are tied with 40% with Alan Schlesinger (R) trailing behind with 13%…..
Do they have a runoff if no one gets over 50%? I think Lamont can beat Lieberman one-on-one, especially in a runoff, where turnout is limited to motivated voters.
Iceland itself has no military of its own whatsoever — the USA used its large base on Iceland for control of the North Atlantic…
At the risk of being EPU’d, let me add my comments regarding the original article.
It could be that one of the reasons Bush is so against it is, well, “follow the money.” No doubt he has friends who are in the lab equipment business, who stand to make a lot of extra money when labs have to keep separate equipment, one to do federally-backed research with, and the other to do stem-cell research with. If the ban on federal dollars were taken away, then these labs could get by with one set (as they’d no longer have to keep all expenditures separated), and that would mean lower sales of lab equipment, and therefore lower profits for the sellers of the equipment.
TeddySanFran at 135: I just looked more closely, and the transcript I was looking at was actually RaisingKaine’s liveblogging of the debate, not a full quote, so his actual statement may have been even less clear. I guess we’ll just have to wait for a full transcript to be sure.
FWIW, I doubt Allen has many friends at the Post, but even more, I think they’re salivating at the idea of an exciting, competitive race in their own back yard.
It occurs to me that a better title for this post, given the graphic, would have been “He Shoots, He Scores.” Am going to have to use that at some point. LOL

I don’t know if I buy this. I think the motivation is more political than economic. I don’t think he gives a shit about fetuses, except if he can use them to motivate his base. If he can use fetuses to divide Americans and motivate his base, who gives a shit if it degrades and inhibits U.S. sciences. The scientists aren’t going to vote Republican anyway. And Bush doesn’t worry about the U.S. falling behind the rest of the world in science, because he doesn’t even believe in science.

You may well be right, but I will offer this alternative explantion. I don’t recall Card being a regular on MTP (or ever on at all, but I could easily be wrong about that). In general the CoS picks from the SAO (senior Administration officials) who will represent respond to Russert’s questions. In my memory its rare for a CoS to actually be taking body slams from Russert, like that.
May be pumpkinhead “pushed back” and said, “No,” Ken Mehlman is NOT welcome this week. He doesn’t even pretend to answer my questions, just spews WH

After watching John Dean on BookTV, I agree. Repugs operating manual is to feed their base, they do not care what the 70% want, they just feed the base.
Pretty sad that the rest of us do not matter!
Doing nothing in the Israel-Lebannon War is NOT a policy (see I can say that word, even tho it is called a “conflict”)
Sending bunker buster bombs to Israel is NOT a policy but sure puts Americans in the crosshairs.
Mark B. in Austin, Lieberman told the CT Dem party to go Dick Cheney themselves, when he said if he didn’t win the primary, August 8, he would run as an independent. At that time polls showed he would beat Lamont and the Gooper. Those polls have changed dramatically. Lamont has to beat Lieberan twice, first in the primary, then in the general.
Thanks Anne, will head out after I finish mowing the lawn. Who ever would put in a lawn in Arizona? Who would be dumb enough to buy a house in AZ with a lawn? ;(
Had a bid to put in desert landscaping from a company that hires only legal workers, I decided I can mow lawns for 6K.
Phoenix weather update:
3rd day of record breaking highs of 118, 116 & 114.
2nd day of record breaking lows of 95 & 97
Ok try to explain a record high low?
Lamont has to beat Lieberan twice, first in the primary, then in the general.
Unless Lamont beats him so badly in the primary, that Weepin’ Joe will really have something to cry about — maybe he will drop out and endorse Ned.

all you have to do is stop watering the lawn, and mowing won’t be an issue anymore.

I’m aware of that, sorry I didn’t make myself clear before. As an aside, I don’t understand why the Democratic Party didn’t kick him out after he declared he wouldn’t abide by the results of the primary. Clearly, that’s not the act of a Democrat.
But my question related to the general election, not the primary. After Lieberman loses and gets on the ballot as a Liebercrat, there will be a three way race in November. If no one gets 50% in November, is it the plurality winner, or is there a runoff? If there is a runoff, we could see Lamont beat Lieberman three times. Maybe the third time, he could drive a wooden stake through his undead heart.

The review is dead-on. These works are right up there with Shakespeare and worthy of the incredibly close reading that Miller engages in. You will love reading his work.
Full disclosure – I took Miller’s class too, while he was a visiting prof at another law school. He is a phenomenal teacher…
No runoff in the CT primary — winner takes all.
ck – and then get fined by my HOA?

Does the same rule apply to the general in November?

Russert just gave the evangelicals a juicy new issue, i.e, “murder” of the embryo, occuring big time in fertility clincs, deserving a law outlawing fertility clinics. Rove should work on that one since Tony Snow, bless him, opened the door to that natural followon deduction. It was an embarrasment (LOL) to watch Josh try to reason out of that natural followon deduction .
I say evangelicals rise up and be counted!! Contact your senator! Outlaw those murderous fertility clinics, or get back under that rock from which you came, where nurturing evil, while waiting for the rapture, seems to occupy your time.

GSD @51, good news out of Ohio. I was wondering how the Strickland/Blackwell race was going. Thanks!
Russert hit the nail on the head by asking why, then, the President doesn’t outlaw in vitro clinics and all stem cell research if he truly believes that it is murder
I wrote the PARODY press release below last year answering that EXACT question. And how Focus on the Family would answer the question if they were being consistent. What is scary is that in doing the research for the release I was able to use a LOT of real comments from FotF. This is not that far from their real views.
Focus on the Family Demands Global Halt to In Vitro Fertilization
Standard methods lead to death of thousands of unborn children
Colorado Springs, Colo. — EMBARGOED UNTIL June 6, 2005 Focus on the Family Founder Dr. James Dobson, today called for an immediate worldwide halt to all in vitro fertilization procedures. “This procedure almost always results in the death of unborn children, often several unborn children die for each successful attempt. I said it regarding stem cell research and it’s time to apply it to in vitro fertilization –it is never morally or ethically justifiable to kill one human being in order to benefit another.”
In addition to calling a halt to these procedures, Focus on the Family will be funding a number of lawsuits against clinics that support these procedures, doctors who perform them and couples who partake in IVF. “On behalf of the thousands of babies trapped in freezers who can’t speak for themselves, we will be their voice in court. And yes, in accordance with Exodus 21:22-25 we will be seeking the death penalty for doctors, clinic administrators and couples who allowed their unborn children to be killed in an experimental procedure. The bible compels us to take the life of anyone who is responsible for the death of these unborn children and who has been found guilty of a capital offense in a legal trial. The Scriptures are clear that the state alone is ordained by God to “bear the sword” and “execute wrath on the wrongdoer.” (Position statement on Violence against abortionists)

The Question that went unasked:
Tim: But Josh, when the President says that he’s sticking to a moral principle that he drew back in 2001, that there would be no more Federal funding for further embryonic stem cell research, that in drawing this line, in effect if he’s stating that he values life, even as a blastocyst, then where does it put him each time an embryo/blastocyst is discarded? That when he says the restriction is put there to protect life,
where is that protection the President says he’s providing when EACH embryo/blastocyst is discarded? Or is it a matter of simply taking the stand that no one needs protections when their dead? Because it serves the greater need of the country, because they are, oh how does the President put it…
