Pachacutec, you will rue the day you saw fit to challenge me! I see your silly parody song and raise you Cameo's Word Up! Puny earthling! You are no match for my powaaaaaaahhh!!
Yes, Word Up, one of the most breezily, effortlessly funky songs of the 80's, and yet one of the most deeply wrong sartorial moments of that same decade!
Yes, dear firedogs. In spite of the fact that this one throbbing bass-line touched off a thousand imitators, the likes of which we are still hearing today...in spite of the fact that this song single-handedly introduced the phrases, "Word up!" and "Word to your mother!" into the vernacular...There is one thing that this video was unable to do. And that was to launch the codpiece as a modern male fashion accesory.

(Cameo lead singer Larry Blackmon says, "I'll get you, evil stylist!")
Ay, yes, the bright red codpiece. See, this is how we know that people were doing lots of cocaine in the 80's. When you're about to go on stage and you grab a red leather codpiece and put it on and think, "Yeah!! I look good!", well, if you don't seek help with Charter hospitals, please, seek help somewhere.
And that was it for the codpiece in America. Nobody else was ever quite dumb or drugged-up enough to think, oh, well, there was this guy:

But everybody knows he's an idiot. Who would ever do anything he says?

Dude. I posted that 2 weeks ago. You must have been on vacation or something.
TRex, remember when you said how unusual it was that everybody was commenting about foxes?
My very next comment was going to be how over the weekend I had seen a blue heron and a fox. I didn’t comment because I felt the need to lay low/apologize/make amends for yet another manic episode that spilled over onto fdl. Yay bipolar.
Goal: solve more problems than I create. Good luck with that.
But the fox thing…REAL foxes, not the stupid tv network.
I am getting some feedback on my small blog from people who are also bipolar. Come on over, we can soar/drown together. Rejoice and cry, our motto.
Another redhead rant.
There was an SNL sketch where for some reason (music piracy, maybe?) all the cheesy musical stars of the 80s were testifying in court. Tracy Morgan was introduced as “The Guy From Cameo” and said “I would like to read from a prepared statement. ‘Word up.’ Thank you.”
The other highlight being Conan O’Brien as the down-on-his-luck Right Said Fred guy (”Lately I’ve been too sexy for my car payments…”), trying to sneak back into the hearing as “the beekeeper from the Village People”.
I have no idea if I’m on topic or not.

Me either, dude. But thanks, I think.

Maybe this will help.

Oy vey. Cameo. exasperated sigh. This YouTube war is getting ugly. We gotta stop this shit.
Is this YouTube thing one of those tubes that make up the internets? Ted Stevens wants to know!
Oy vey. Cameo. exasperated sigh. This YouTube war is getting ugly. We gotta stop this shit.
Does this mean you don’t want to see the video for “I Wanna Be A Lifeguard”?
I got your ’80s right here: Nena!
I’m just glad I’m not as “diminutive” as our cod-piece-in-chief.
Oh I knew this was coming. I said to TRex today, “well after Pach called you out like that…” and he said, “huh?”
Just a mattter of time.
And that’s all I have to say about that.
Hi Jane. I should be up in CHS’ neck of the woods in a couple of days.
Nena is nowhere near as insane as Lene Lovich…
Careful with those WMDs TRex…I got some eurodisco here :)
Click Me!
Too bad all these video links are showing up tonight. I’m wireless with a weak ass signal, so I can’t view any of them.
OFG — you’ve got to coffee!!
And just when I get tacky the lady of the house shows up. Somehow I think it would be difficult to offend her delicate sensibilities. ;)
OK, I am escalating this sumbitch up in here.
The internet is a series of tubes, female power-style. One of the best t-shirt designs ever.
Eli: Take this Berlin. I recorded the demos for this album.
Nice people, but the music def. doesn’t pass the test of time.
If I can, I will. Just sorta hard to wheel into a Starbucks with 32 wheels on the ground, fourteen feet wide, one hundred feet long and weighing over one hundred and sixty thousand pounds. It’s sorta hard on their parking lots.
Eli I’m a big Lene Lovich fan. I saw her live in New Orleans back in 87 I think it was. She was so short!
Funny how a song with such a great hook wears out its welcome after about a minute.
I may have some time to stop, at least on the return trip. Would love to see her again. I think she is a wonderful person. I know Mr. RH would probably like a look at my cargo, though.
Don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.
(And no, Berlin really never did anything for me at any time, other than, um, visually)
wait a minute! did anyone watch Kurt’s eurodisco? that is one of the most bizarre little bits of film … and what’s with the rubbing dirt on nipples part? Kurt … I am worried that the youtube war has gotten to you bad, son … really bad.
I don’t know Steve, I still like Berlin. I always liked that song and it still holds a spot in my playlist. I think the music holds up to time better than some things. Like Cameo.
Eli, that’s really, really sick. Ewww.
My old band used to play a punk-rock version of Berlin’s “The Metro”.
And I love Lene Lovich.
Fini FiniTOOBZ! 31:
Some of their stuff was good, I worked with them from the very beginning. But the whole triggered bass thing is so…’80s. Terri is a great girl, very cool.
siun @ 30
hehe…that song is actually pretty famous for people spontaneously making their own amateur videos for it…go figure. See the wiki entry about it.

Somewhere I have a video of them in their earliest incarnation shot at the Starwood in Hollywood, pretty cheezy.
This should be pretty tough to top for sheer WTFness.
Didn’t System of a Down record a version of The Metro? That’s my favorite tune by Berlin anyway. I may be confuzzled on the SOAD thing, it may be I am confusing that song for “Kids in America” by Kim Wilde. My mind is mush tonight, please excuse.
I dunno, Eli, this this might beat it.
Oh man if someone is pulling out The Residents I’m laying down my arms and surrendering.
It’s pretty tough to top The Residents.
But I have some Aphex Twin in reserve, just in case.
Berlin’s The Metro and Kim Wilde’s Kids in America have a similar sound. Both are good songs, near the best offerings of New Wave. But my opinion is probably shaped by the time in my life when that music was popular, it’s my nostalgia music. And punk rock, of course.
Now come on! My GWAR is better than any Aphex Twin.
Anyone want to know where that name came from? Aphex, I mean?
Awwwwwww yeah! That’s what I am TALKIN’ BOUT!
Now come on! My GWAR is better than any Aphex Twin.
Anyone want to know where that name came from? Aphex, I mean?
I dunno, I gotta go with the demonic teddy bears.
Do tell on the name, though.
SteveAudio - Ah, the Starwood. I saw some really good shows there around ‘75-’78. Good times.
Oh, I get it. This thread is about high art. My contribution.
http://Aphex.com.
These guys came up with a box in the late ’70s, not for sale, to use on mixdowns, you payed based on $$ per minute of time on the record. It was the Aphex Aural Exciter. Interesting box, added highs without adding loudness, would make mixes sort of “pop” out of the radio.
Later they started selling the boxes, and made other products.
I’ve been refurbishing the original units lately, they are pretty popular with producers and engineers.
Who among us doesn’t love ants playing soccer?
I can’t find anything on “Ebsom Salts and His Bowel Busters.” They were a one hit wonder with their recording on top of hotel commode, “I love you so much I could shi*”.

Cool! I did not know that. I just assumed it was the name his alien masters gave him or something.
Berlin…I was Crawford’s bass teacher for a hot minute…Dude couldn’t even play a major scale. Dave Diamond was cool, though.
TV-GLOTZER! … SMACK JACK!
Top of the world, ma! …BOOM!

OFG — you just happened to catch me up with a case of insomnia. Where are you headed with your load? There are a couple of truck stops that I know in the area…or I can come and pick you up and we can grab better coffee elsewhere. *g* Just let me know when and where, and it’s a coffee date…depending on the day and time, you may be having coffee with the peanut as well. :)
Eli 51:
You see Aphex products in studios all the time, I assume he just liked the sound of the word.
Now, about “Tones On Tail”, I can explain that too…nah, never mind.
The peanut drinks coffee?

Go!
Living it up.
Trex, u kno I luv ya baby, but when it comes to codpieces, there is only one original codder, the uber-codder, and he pre-dates Cameo by over a decade, give or take.

…”Well, her voice is amazing. It’s amazing that she still has a voice after what she does with it. (jwaite@ucsd.edu)
I think Diamanda works in two different media: In music and in theatre. Her theatre is, of course, very musical–as musical as her music is theatrical–but there is a distinction. Vena Cava is a very scary piece of theatre. “Do You Take This Man?”, from The Sporting Life, is a darkly funny–camp-horrific, even–song.
Let me summarize–i.e. generalize and oversimplify: As Diamanda’s rage at injustice (her chief targets are religious hypocrisy and the [as she sees it] genocide resulting from official inaction in the face of the AIDS epidemic) grows, her humor recedes; and as she finds herself reduced to weariness and resignation, her voice takes on the bitter cackle of the powerless.
At no point along the spectrum is she pleasant, but she can be one of the most truly emotionally affecting artists out there, as well as one of the most fun.
See her live, if you can. It’ll help you to connect all her work–to visualize her spectrum more clearly.”

Eli at 54 — oh heavens, no. I can barely keep up with her now, and I shudder to think of life should she discover the magic of caffeine…
No, she’ll be having some milk, with an orange juice chaser and some cheerios, most likely. *g*
Hello CHS. Let’s make it for on my way back. I’m headed for the thriving metropolis known as Ligonier, PA. It looks like I’ll be leaving W.VA on the north end on HWY 119. Since I have two pilot cars with me, it wouldn’t be fair to them to hold up the big show. But definitely on the way back we’ll see if we can get together. I know you live on the north end of WVA, so I will be glad to get a break once I get this behind me.
Eli 55:
Anytime a recording is done on tape, at a professionalo studio, the tape machine (Usually 24 tracks on 2″ tape) is aligned, or calibrated, sometimes to different specifications based on percieved sonic differences, and engineer preferences.
Then, a set of reference tones, Mid frrequency, Hi frequency and low frequency are recorded. These tones can be used to align the machine to the same specs later, or at different studios.
Often the tones are put at the head, or beginning of the reel, but some engineers like them at the end, or tail, of the reel.
And after I aligned the tape machine, I would write all the info on the reel, and the box: Tones at tail, 1 min. ea, 1K, 10K, 50 Hz, 1:00 ea.
Trex, u kno I luv ya baby, but when it comes to codpieces, there is only one original codder, the uber-codder, and he pre-dates Cameo by over a decade, give or take.
Um, is the pirate with the flute chewing gum?
Eli at 54 — oh heavens, no. I can barely keep up with her now, and I shudder to think of life should she discover the magic of caffeine…
There’s this movie called “Hoodwinked” (smart-assed CGI take on Little Red Riding Hood), which features a squirrel named Twitchy…
Why, Redd! We don’t usually see you up at this hour! Welcome.
Would you care to contribute to the YouTube partay?
oops, wrote that out wrong, but you get the idea.

OFG at 61 — e-mail me and we’ll work out details. I might even be coaxed into a home-cooked dinner with your name on it. ;-)
Blank Kludge — I’ve seen Diamanda live and used her stuff before. She’s iconic.
I do believe I trump every other comment (even Jane’s) on this thread when I admit that I have Cameo’s single Word Up… on vinyl.
And I like it.
My link at or about 47 is my homage to all hillbillies.
When I watch a video at the YouTube site, I get sound with the picture, but when I try to watch an embedded YouTube video here (or at Eschaton), I get the picture but no sound.
Anybody know why?
OFG 73:
Not keen on the banjos? Ever listen to Bela Fleck?
She’s iconic.
Hrm.
*refrains from comment*
TRex at 64 — well, I’m going to kick everyone’s sorry 80s ass with this one. But this is one of my all-time fave 80s songs by a band that deserves a lot more listening.
*drumroll*
I give you…The Church and “Under the Milky Way”. (And a video produced by someone who was clearly high on something…)
Why thank you CHS. There was a mix-up on the delivery date, so all the wise decision makers need to compare notes. When all the details get ironed out, I’ll email you with a close appx of eta.
Um, is the pirate with the flute chewing gum?
Pirates do not wear codders (except in the blecherous flick The Pirate King - don’t let that confuse you)
There is, however, a national holiday - Talk Like Tull Day in which celebrants simultaneously chew gum, play flutes and hop on one leg while wearing tights and codpieces. Great fun for the gals.
Yeah Diamanda has a wonderful voice. She’s kinda like a cross between Laurie Anderson and Nina Hagen. Well I guess they sound nothing alike hehe…but they are kinda doing the same thing. Classically trained, but doing something completely non-classical.
Steve Audio,
Ah hell, there is nothing like the sound of a banjo. I’ve always loved them. Unfortunately, I have no musical ability whatsoever, or I would play a banjo. The closest thing I get to that is when I sit on the radio and pick my nose.
and this, for its historical value -

OFG, just for you, some Bela Fleck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQW6vsUwMxY
I had forgotten how much fun that Lene Lovich video is. You can’t say she lacked spunk, that girl.
How about “Fascination” for a trippy 80s video?
Jane:
I’ve heard the Plague piece over the air once; frankly crave it now. I would love the direct performance experience. NYC a couple days after CT D Sen primary.
Could be appropriate to attend in the event of EITHER way vote goes.
—–
Weird that I’ve heard that piece once and crave it again. Seen Natural Born Killers once, and grokked a major work of art onscreen before my eyes. Have yet to repeat, but actively craving.
—–
Anyone for Architectural Metaphor? CD dedicated to Albert Hoffman, Sandoz and Owlsey. But that’s the ’90’s I think.
gnite folks
btw, The Church — great writing music. Especially Under the Milky Way. Just FYI. Always seems to kick my writer’s block…
Christy … the only Church I was listening to during that time period was …
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....arch=lords of the new church
and StivBader gave me his Ban the Klan button when my bro took me to see them live … I cherished that for along time.
This is messed up, but for reasons I can’t even figure out, hilarious. Sick. Hilarious anyway.
Actually, I guess “Fascination” just has a great intro sequence - it’s kinda lame after that…
Oh, and I really liked the World Of Warcraft Korn video, but the dancing Voldos remain the video game video gold standard for me.
Speaking of messed up,
Olmert said: “The diplomatic process will ?not come at the expense of destroying infrastructures of
civilian Lebanoneseterror and this process will last untilpeople realize we are killing civilianstake a very long time.”Been looking for a clip of a classical guitarist named Al Dimiola (sp?). I saw him perform in Norman Oklahoma. He’s gatta be the fastest sumbitch I ever saw on a box guitar. Can’t find anything on him on the ‘net tho’.
OFG 93:
Al DiMeola, that might help. Fine player, but not the fastest.
Been looking for a clip of a classical guitarist named Al Dimiola (sp?). I saw him perform in Norman Oklahoma. He’s gatta be the fastest sumbitch I ever saw on a box guitar. Can’t find anything on him on the ‘net tho’.
You mean this guy?
OT I guess.
We’ve lost him.
Rawstory is reporting that Zell switched parties to vote in the Republican primary. Presumably for Ralph Reed, who he had supported.
I guess we don’t have to wait for Leiberman to lose to recognize that we have lost the soul and center of the Democratic party.
But when a centrist like Zell can’t help Reed coattail to victory, it makes you question the soul of the Republican party as well.
ANd the real question remain - which party gets dueling rights with Tweety and how many years does it take before the “liberators” become “occupiers?”
CHS @ 78
That is one of the most beautiful songs of the 80s and holds a special spot in my memory bank. Thanks for the link!
Rawstory is reporting that Zell switched parties to vote in the Republican primary. Presumably for Ralph Reed, who he had supported.
Dang. I never even saw it coming.
Laurie Anderson on military spending:

Oh, and for the full-on 80s hair experience, you can’t beat Heart’s “These Dreams” video. (Also, a trippy 80s video, start to finish.) But personally I prefer their older stuff — like Crazy On You.
CHS:
The first Heart album is a classic, After they signed to Capitol, and got ‘teh big hair’, the pretty much became an icon of ’80s excesses.
Having said that, Annie could sing! Sadly, her voice lately is not what it used to be.
I am so disappointed. I wanted to present Wild Man Fischer singing “Merry Go Round” but apparently YouTube does not have it. Anybody remember Wild Man Fischer?
Yeah, that’s the guy Eli. Sure Steve, he may not be the fastest, just the fastest I ever saw. He just sat on a stool in a very small venue and totally blew us all away. My roomate at the time was the lead guitarist in a rock band that I was managing at the time, so we went to check him out. Awesome stuff.
I am so disappointed. I wanted to present Wild Man Fischer singing “Merry Go Round” but apparently YouTube does not have it. Anybody remember Wild Man Fischer?
Ohgodyes. My name is La-arry, my name is La-arry…
OFG 104,
Yeah, Al is truly a fine player. He did some work years ago with John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia that’s pretty stellar.
That Voldo clip is great! Thanks!
SteveAudio at 102 — we saw them in concert in a small venue in Phoenix, and they were awesome. But that was a little over three years ago now, so no idea how things are going with her voice at this point. But she kicked ass the whole concert when we saw them. Maybe the small venue was better for acoustics?
Of course, it could just be that I always wanted to be a kick-ass babe like they were in the 70s. LOL
So, um, neuro…
Didja here about this?
Well, gnite everyone. I’ll be in touch CHS.
Love me some Dream Boat Annie, and Barracuda…but yep later Heart is just sad hehe.
Oops, *hear* about this…
Or this, for that matter…
Fini at 98 — yeah, an old boyfriend of mine introduced me to them. Unfortunately for him, I loved the group more than him — and my crush on The Church music stuck around far longer than our relationship. But I’ll always remember him fondly for introducing me to that song. :)
EUGH!!
This is rapidly degenerating into a Cool Music Guy discussion.
Quick, I brought some Kajagoogoo!!
You guys, the point of You Tube wars is NOT to talk about good music. Arright? Save it for another thread.
This is rapidly degenerating into a Cool Music Guy discussion.
Dude, don’t look at me.
Laurie Anderson, O Superman. The first I’d ever heard of Laurie Anderson was hearing this song on the radio, a local community station.
Christy - I am a Church fan - seen them live twice, actually. Thank you for that link!
another 80’s on for y’all
and . . .
this one!
Oh. My. GAWD! Murray freaking Head?!? I gotta dig out the Members Only jacket to listen to that one.
TRex @100
hehe, thank goodness for the spray on cheese :)
YouTube doesn’t have much Laurie up there…have you heard her cd The Ugly One With the Jewels? A lot of nice little stories on there. I was looking for “The Geographic North Pole” to link to.
And how could we overlook this?
Okay, well if it’s crap 80s music you want, TRex, I give you…
Toto “Africa”
Anyone have a freaking clue what the point of this song is supposed to be? (Other than someone was on drugs when they wrote it.)
Or, the ultimate in 80s ballads:
Air Supply “Making Love Out of Nothing at All”
Arrrrrgh!!!!
