Earlier this week, local reporter Mark Davis tossed softballs at Joe Lieberman and gave him plenty of free space to attack Ned for holding Halliburton stock. When it turned out Davis had been played for a putz, and Lieberman held Halliburton stock in the exact same way he’d accused Ned of doing, did Davis turn around and press Lieberman on the subject? No, he decided to hammer Ned’s campaign manager Tom Swan (YouTube above).
Big mistake.

Sorry I wasn’t able to get to Connecticut yesterday…look forward to making it down from Boston soon.
Jane, I met your old friend Mary Jane M. today at a mini-Lake gathering in Maine. You Are welcome to join us here anytime.

Ned’s providing the Friday night entertainment here….
For all you Nedheads here, you need to check this post out at DU.

Jane,
You are not going to let those scumbags get away with anything! Go after the hypocritical assholes…including the media whores.
Noice!
I would really love to see more of this on the national level: Dems recognizing when the media are actively hostile, and calling them on it. They need to either clean up the media or discredit it.
Old Sow — you lucky dog!! Mary Jane is the best. I wish I was there.
Wow, I guess Mark Davis is afraid to ask Joe Lieberman the questions he forgot to ask, so he’s gonna ask Tom, and then get Tom riled? This is the best media coverage for this campaign for “the soul of the Democratic party” in Connecticut?
Where’s Mr. Broder planning to spend his July?
Where’s Mrs. Greenspan planning to spend her July?
Where’s Judy Miller spending her July?
If one were a serious journalist, with all these questions for both the candidates (as it appears there are only two, with an election between them in August and then another one in November — yet another neocon perversion of “one man-one vote”) woudn’t one want to be in Connectictut for this election? Wouldn’t one need to be in Connecticut?
If only he could, surely Hunter Thompson would be there. Is that who spazeboy is?

I couldn’t hear the original question from the reporter, but Tom starts out by saying they have reported all stock and then goes on to say it is lazy of the reporter to ‘not have done his homework.’ Then says that they, Lamont’s team, have made no personal attacks on Lieberman where all of his (Joe’s) campaign is about personal attack.

okay, I just read the previous post and i am pissed.
I spoke to Boxer’s local office on Wednesday and got the DeeCee scheduler’s name, left word for him (TWICE) and haven’t heard back.
This is not how a Senator’s office should treat her constituents who inquire, as I did, about her schedule and asked him to please call or email me.
I am really angry at Senator Boxer’s office right now. She is not only slinking in under BigDog’s skirts — way to further undermine your longtime support of women, Babs! — but her office won’t respond to inquiries from constituents about her schedule.

Y’know, there have been two major big time sexual harassers on the Federal payroll in my lifetime. One of them is Clarence Thomas, and I have always been proud that Barbara Boxer marched to the Senate to demand that Anita Hill’s testimony be heard.
The other harasser, the one with the intern, apparently my Senator is willing to be in-state with for a war enabler.
Color me disappointed.

I think the reason Lamont is doing so well, is that his campaign is doing all the right things. They have strong positions on the issues, that actually are shared by the voters. They stand up for themselves when attacked. They’re not afraid to call a spade, a spade.
Dems running for office all across the country could learn from this. You do NOT need to be Republican-lite to get into office. Ignore the Beltway no-brain crowd, and just be yourself and respect your constituents!

Well, if the bloggers are going to tell the media to do their jobs right, and the campaign managers are going to tell the media to do their jobs right, and the media owners are — never mind.
We really shouldn’t expect any better behavior from people whose paychecks are dependent upon the views of those who fear people-power. But we should call them on it in public every time.

My cats are jealous of FDL. They keep walking across my keyboard and blocking my screen.
1. With a caveat I’ll put below, Mr. Swan should’ve handled this entirely differently. Mr. Swan jumped reporter Davis. Well….I would’ve emphasized to reporter Davis how LIEBERMAN made a tool out of the reporter. Davis asked good faith questions re: stock holdings of Lamont, and Lieberman USED and DECEIVED reporter Davis; as Lieberman knew ALL ALONG of his own Hal holdings. Get the reporter embarrassed…and pissed! Nothing like a pissed reporter stalking a senatorial candidate! USE the info to “capture” the reporter to your side.
2. caveat: I don’t know anything about Davis. Apparently, he leans towards Lieberman. If Davis is a TOTAL TOOL of Lieberman, and everyone knows this, then the Swan approach is a-ok in my book. But Davis would have to be a Judy Miller type prostitute-reporter. I just don’t know alot about Davis.
3. Finally: Mr. Swan, at least you’re learning how to fight! Good for you! Keep it up. In time, you’ll learn how to effectively land your punches. But I give you credit for finally taking a swing. Good going.

TeddySF — I suspect Boxer’s people aren’t giving out her schedule because (the Clinton appearance excepted) all of Joe’s campaign events are a big secret. It’s the dreaded Fear of the Float. Makes for very small events, but apparently HoJo would rather have itsy-bitsy crowds than have word leak out and those pesky bloggers show up. Ergo Boxer not only will sneak in under cover of Clinton, thus (she hopes) avoiding the press, but also any event she attends will be very small. Maybe an invitation-only reception. Her head couldn’t be any lower down and still keep her commitment to come to Connecticut. Here’s an interesting question, though. If Barbara Boxer campaigns for Joe and nobody knows, what good does it do Joe?

The basic strategy is: “The world is a violent and dangerous place. You need a Big Strong Daddy to protect you from all the scary badmen.”
Dumb move on Tom Swan’s part. You don’t attack reporters, even when they’re wrong. Should have focused on how Lieberman duped them, not how reporters duped the public.
“lazy of you to report on it without doing your homework”
I know I’m late to the party, but this is so, so, so long overdue, not just in this race but in political reporting in general. If Donna Brazile had said this, if Bob Shrum had said this….

Ah Joe. Don’t be afraid of the Float.
I think what Rove gets that Dem strategists don’t is that he doesn’t have to convince all of the people all of the time, just sow doubt in the minds of the weakest 50.01% of registered voters one week before the election.

It was a toss-up, but I decided that Churchill more accurately represents the Right’s image of Democratic values, even if he isn’t particularly fat.

My main concern is that Dems don’t have a unified vision to counter the Repub idiocy.
The Dems have had plenty of time to get off their asses and come up with a coherent platform. I am reading political stuff all day long at this point, and if they have a platform, even I haven’t read about it.
I submit to you all that the Progressive blogs should come up with the platform ourselves, and bleat about it til the cows come home. The Dems may not adopt it, but at least it will be out there.

My hat’s off to you for all you’re doing, Spazeboy. Hope you’ll always feel at home here.
It’s not just fear of the float that Lieberman wants to avoid. When he was confronted by a woman at a local event, he said it himself: “It was a setup.” The man’s paranoid. He suspects that the netroots will send in a mole to every event he announces publicly.
Perhaps this also stems from his run against Bush in 2000. Some experiences cut deeper than others.
Floatophopia
Blogizdat? Oh, I do like that one.
Also Float-o opportunity
Loserman probably thought his debate with Ned Lamont was a setup, too. How dare they send a real candidate to debate him.
kurt @ 185: i’m the last person to defend wimpy mealymouthed dems, but i have to comment that even if they did “come up with a platform” it’s not like the librul media would cover it. and to be honest, i’ve read plenty of dem platforms, program ideas, plans, etc. that sound just fine. if the leadership fails to put it all together, so to speak, they don’t really do that much worse a job than chimpy and crew, who are given a free pass with every unhistorical, amnesiatic, contradictory proclimation they make.
My main concern is that Dems don’t have a unified vision to counter the Repub idiocy.
The Administration has tunnel vision not a unified vision.
And a rubber stamp congress propelled by fear is not an asset either.
What is important is GOTV by thinking people to counter the idiocy. The TFM vote is already spoken for, no matter what this report might indicate
Alright, thanks for the warm welcome guys. :)
As far as video, I just finished a short vid on Ned’s universal healthcare plan. Can you believe that none of the mainstream media outlets actually covered his plan yesterday? It was all Q-Poll all the time.
I was very interested in Ned’s healthcare plan, being that I pay a lot out of pocket for insurance I rarely use–and so I’ll post video when the MSM can’t be bothered.
Incidentally, I’ll be at a wedding tomorrow (not mine…though last night was maybe the most romantic place I’ve been with Amy in awhile, I should have popped the question with a napkin ring), so I’ve spent this evening putting some posts in the can for tomorrow. One nice meaty one on Lieberman’s Freudian Projection problem, one smart-ass one about Jane distracting me from covering the important stories, and one about Ned’s healthcare plan (basically just the video).
Well, now that I’m missing Best Week Ever–it’s time to go. I’m a pop-culture whore in my free time.
“it’s a set up.” bwhahahahah. what a pathetic little turd. goddess i can’t wait till he’s gone.
just throwing it out there, but who do y’all think should be next? if we take the senator from the likud party down, we shouldn’t stop there by any means, but ride that surge. nothing succeeds like success, or something.

DiFi or Schumer (especially if he backs Joe as an independent) would be my picks. Oh, and probably Rahm too. I have no tolerance for crappy Dems in blue states/districts, but red-state/district DINOs may be the best we can hope for.

Well, Eli, you can always just declare them free and let them farm the land for themselves and relish in the humanity of it all. :)
It ain’t no thing.
i see why you’re spending all your time here now, eli. the groupies alone must be…satisfying.
dogs: don’t be fooled. eli must, must, must be stopped. soon you will learn this too.
Well, Eli, you can always just declare them free and let them farm the land for themselves and relish in the humanity of it all. :)
That’s a thought. Firedoglakers and a mule.
More like… completely unexpected, chidy. I actually had every intention of being all serious when I came over to FDL.
A platform for the dems just might be “Stand up America and stop being afraid.” Fear is not a rational policy, courage in the face of danger is. And bombing alone cannot form a policy of honor. Negotiating with other from a base of courage and honor is the dem posiition.
There, that’s my platform.
Chicago Dyke — Most of the bloggerbabes at FDL are too old to be Eli groupies. I myself am considering adopting him, though, along with Spazeboy and Matt O.
Eli is sooooo dreamy!
/swoon
FYI, Christy got punked by CNN:
we are a posse of democratic mules pulling the progressive train out of the station…
hauling ass on Metro North in ConnectiGuts everyday til the Lamont engine chugs all the way to Capitol Hill!
woo hoo!
Canadian evacuation ships: they are now saying it wasn’t an attack by Israel but rather an explosion of a fire extinguisher. Ya those suckers just go off all the time. We believe that??
I myself am considering adopting him, though, along with Spazeboy and Matt O.
I’m very quiet and low-maintenance, but I eat a lot and don’t pick up after myself very well.
I’m kinda like a 37-year-old teenager.
Egregious, they are also saying it was not Israel that blew up a UN post in southern Lebanon.
Ken Houghton says:
July 21st, 2006 at 8:33 pm
Ken, CNN picked up a WSJ story, lots on prior threads about it.
Eh? Believe that a fire extinguisher went kaboom while people are fleeing? I cain’t hardly hear ye, egregious– think my eardrums just ’slpoded along with my brain.
I love the smell of propaganda morning, noon and night.
jlr, ya probably spontaneous combustion.
Did CNN point out that Christy never actually said Bush was a Sigma Chi? I didn’t think so.
Ken Houghton #217,
Shows how stupid the lapdog media are. Christy was clearly citing Sigma Chi because of their reputation as out-of-control drunkards, and not pointing out which frat Bush actually belonged to.
Jeez, is everyone in the gas bag world so extremely humor-impaired? And what the hell is the “Web 2.0″ thing? This isn’t the semantic web, it’s just a freaking blog. Seems like someone was trying to hard to sound hip.
jlr 221: Egregious, they are also saying it was not Israel that blew up a UN post in southern Lebanon.
Sounds like a 4 year old I know, “it broke by itself when I dropped it.”
I think the Bush administration must be very grateful to Canada right now. There’s at least one country doing a slower, even more disorganized job of evacuating its nationals than we are.
Ken, CNN picked up a WSJ story, lots on prior threads about it.
It was a spectacularly irrelevant point to make in the first place, but in keeping with the Republican strategy to use one peripheral error to invalidate the larger truth.
“Too hard”, shame on me.
Did CNN point out that Christy never actually said Bush was a Sigma Chi? I didn’t think so.
Yeah, that was my other thought, that she was just using it as shorthand for “obnoxious frat”, and not particularly giving a shit which particular obnoxious frat W. was in.
“I’m very quiet and low-maintenance, but I eat a lot and don’t pick up after myself very well.
I’m kinda like a 37-year-old teenager.
You did not mention the GOP girlfriend.
Should we be reading something into that omission?
Does it have to be homecooked food? What about takeout?
I think only former frat members care about which frat is being talked about. Those of us who remained outside the Greek system think all frats are the same—drinking, womanizing and sadistic homoerotic experiences.
puppethead
That is probably the key to the original story–the reporter was a frat rat, so he got hyperconcerned about which frat was being referred to.
That doesn’t explain why CNN published the same report without pointing out the reporter’s error. Same reason?
John Casper, bite your tongue! I believe Eli said his girlfriend was Green, not GOP. Eli, eating a lot is no problem, but the untidiness thing could be a deal breaker. I am spectacularly untidy myself, so unless Spazeboy and Matt O. are willing to clean up after both of us, I must regretfully withdraw my offer of adoption. You can be an honorary nephew, though, if you like.
I actually had every intention of being all serious when I came over to FDL.
snort. you’re just lucky my new lover is taking up all my attention, or i’d show these good, decent people with 10,000 haloscan moments of memory why they should shun you like a 5$ ho at the baptist convention…oh, wait, that’s probably not a good example.
anyway, i’m glad everyone is ahem, enjoying how appalled they feel at the israelis bombing canadians as i am. as i said elsewhere (jimmy dean): what’s it going to take? can the likudniks bomb metro detroit, and have bush and condi tell us we should be OK with that?
sure feels like, these days.

Oh, and what puppethead said #234
You did not mention the GOP girlfriend.
Should we be reading something into that omission?
Eh? Or is that a standard teenager characteristic? Actually, my girlfriend is basically Green, but with very poor media filters (and she lives in SC), so she does absorb some of the talking points, which can be uncomfortable. She’s utterly pro-choice and anti-war, though.
Does it have to be homecooked food? What about takeout?
I’m not that picky, except that I only like my fish raw.
I think Eli at 229 nailed it, it’s another VRWC attempt to discredit the left with something trivial that gets blown out of proportion (I’m always reminded of the false outrage over the Wellstone Memorial). Not all of their pointless barbs stick, but they must constantly try them until something works.
Gold star for BarbaraB.
(Um, if you’re untidy, then you should be desensitized enough to not really mind any additional untidiness, right?)
omg spaceboy you are so not barging in here ever — we’re just shy, and overwhelmed when you show up, so we may appear standoffish.

it’s another VRWC attempt to discredit the left with something trivial that gets blown out of proportion
This was the essence of Rathergate, and I was very disappointed with the way Rather and CBS played it. Instead of digging in their heels on the authenticity of the memos, they should have immediately thrown them over the side and said “Okay, you’re right, they’re questionable, but they just provided dramatic effect, not evidentiary meat. We stand by the story. George Bush used the ANG to get out of Vietnam, and failed to even fulfill that obligation, and the documentation on that is beyond question.”
i was not fond of sororities either at my University, puppethead. equally bizarro tendencies, maybe worse at times, cause it was covert. pretending to be ladies, while vying for those drinking, womanizing boyeez and moaning all day long about how icky they were while playing cutesie all nite; some did good works, most just were pretenders.
i have great family and friends that were brothers and sisters in those orgs. i think you have to have a brain and conscience to emerge an adult.
Stanford had a few unhoused nerd frats (and at least one sorority) that had some nice people.
But the Sigma Chis were just vile.
wow, Jane, Lowell Weicker. That’s so cool.
Lowell Weicker is the last scion of Rockefeller/Lindsay Northeastern Republicans, which takes me back to the last time Hillary Clinton and I were on opposite sides of the battle for the soul of a party, only that time it was the GOP.
If CT media hasn’t picked up on Lieberman holding Halliburton stock, then CT people should start a letters to the editor campaign about this, or take out an ad in the paper taking Joe to task for being a hypocrite.
Eli, BarbarB,
I can’t talk now, because half my tongue is on the floor. Kind of a self-imposed “Midnight Express.
Actually, I made that up.
But, I am sorry Eli, I thought you had mentioned that your girlfriend was a Republican or something like that.
If CT media hasn’t picked up on Lieberman holding Halliburton stock,
Hallieberman?
But, I am sorry Eli, I thought you had mentioned that your girlfriend was a Republican or something like that.
I might have mentioned the talking points vulnerability thing, but I don’t recall.
you know who could drink anyone under the table at my big ten undergrad institution? the tri-delts. that is, the grrls.
i was a bartender at a Well Known College Institution (actually, two of them) in that town, and i swear, the boys had no chance. no one can throw back the peach coolers like an mrs hunting rising senior without a ring (nose or finger).
Eli — I am so desensitized to clutter that I really don’t see it, but when I start tripping over it I am forced to re-clear a path. Two of us and my house would be a perpetual safety hazard. BTW, are you really 37? If so, we should consider having you adopt Spazeboy and Matt O, and I’ll be the grandmother.
From CT media (Stamford Advocate)
“Lieberman’s decision to run regardless of the primary results was what led Avery Gaddis, co-chairman of Waterbury’s Young Democrats, to support Lamont.
“I’m glad Bill Clinton’s coming. It’s not every day we get someone of his caliber coming to town,” Gaddis said. “But personally, I could care less if God came to town. I’m voting for Ned Lamont.”
To be fair, there’s a lot of Democratic Party platform pretty well spelled out here:
http://democraticleader.house.gov/
I think it’s important to check out this site if you think the Democrats have no platform. Just because one hasn’t heard of it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Thanks, chidyke — let’s focus on who’s not telling America about this platform.

Ken 217: ya wanna know what punked is? being late with old, wrong news. that’s punked, punk.
nice try.
Teddy — yep, sitting next to Lowell Weicker all afternoon was amazing. I remember coming home from school when I was a little kid and watching the Watergate hearings, Lowell is a titan.
Lowell is a titan.
Bears *are* pretty big…
BarbaraB 228: well, our neighbors to the North did opt for W2.0, didn’t they? Hard to imagine their Dear Leader could be worse, but it sounds like his disaster-evacuation skills might rival our Dear Leader’s.
Oh, my.
teddy sf: forgive me for saying it, but it’s where i think the firepups have a ways to go. yes, i blame boxer and clenis and a whole host of dems for a whole host of well, approving murder of lebanese children, and the like. but- atrios, media matters, my blog…it’s not like we don’t spend all goddamn livelong days reminding people that the SCLM will *never* present our views correctly, if presented at all. i just hate it when Good Libruls and progressive buy into the Talking Point # 1235 that the “dems don’t stand for anything.”
when you’ve met a few, you know- they hate it as much as we do. they speak, they shout, if it weren’t a bad thing to say, i’d say that in many ways, national level dems are like black people: spoken of often, but never quoted directly. gotta luv our “free” press!
i just hate it when Good Libruls and progressive buy into the Talking Point # 1235 that the “dems don’t stand for anything.”
Roberts. Alito. Bankruptcy reform.
I have no trouble believing that what they’re saying isn’t getting out like it should, but their votes are getting out loud and clear.
Hey, everybody. Late Nite is coming. Look for us between 12:30 and 1:00am. I have the boys from Sadly, No! in the hizzy!
Oh, and how could I forget the AUMF and the Patriot Act…
*ilson … that NYT story … guess we can’t have a ceasefire before we deliver a few more batches of bombs … the longer we wait, the more rush orders?
Trex in the house !!!! woohoo!
TSF, I had the same thought.
Ken’s web site, however, looked pretty good, so it may have been an honest mistake.
My hat is off to Avery Gaddis and all of his fellow ConnecticuGutans that are gonna blow Joe away– thanks for that Dru.
Go Ned!
Jane, I remember coming home and my very busy Mom was watching the Watergate hearings (no Dark Shadows for us then and that was a major boo hoo) and she would give us a hug and a snack and sit down and say, hush now– this is history. She has never been a tv watcher, rather she is a fantabulous Mom of 6 and busy, busy, busy. Never too busy for history and setting things right and loving this country, and teaching her babies, though.
I guess they aren’t using Fed-Ex next-day-delivery for US munitions for Israel …
siun – When is that bad news going to be delivered
I love that Swan didn’t smile during both of those clips.
As a very smiley lady, I think it has really put me at a tactical disadvantage those times when I needed every advantage. Especially in dealing with tradesmen and attorneys.
The only kind of smiles you see from Rethuglicans are grimaces – - DeLay, Gingrich, Junior.
I think we should quit smiling except in personal relations. I think Tom Swan just showed us how.
Angie
Coming home every day from classes at the community college and watching the Watergate hearings was one of the formative experiences of my life. I remember Lowell Weiker well and fondly.
I recall listenng to the Watergate hearings on NPR … especially the parts about Maury Stans and all the money laundering. Very impressive! I grasped the tricks so I undertand the basic campaign finance laws it generated … now I’m the treasurer for several political committees and love doing opposition research on the finance reports of the other side …
282 –
Reading the tranacipts… bought the book. Got caught up in the redactions. Missed the point that the committee caught and hid from the children.
Jane,
It was great getting a chance to chat with you last night. And fun to meet other FDL bloggers. Just wish it hadn’t taken me several hours to find the Inn.
Isn’t Weicker great? A real maverick… I remember him way back in his Greenwich days.
I’m curious what he thinks of what’s happening to Leiberman and Lamont’s chances are – I’m assuming those topics were discussed…
It was a beautiful moment in our relatively short history as a country, neuro. Accountability and Weicker was there, front and center. It was discussed around the dinner table when Dad came home at night. It gave hope that wrongs could be righted.
Much better than the day I saw my parents weep for JFK.
OMG. I can’t believe people here think that a 37-year old could be Spazeboy’s mother. Nothing has made me feel so old in a while.
Spazeboy, please tell me you don’t see me in your mother’s generation! :-)
(I’m turning 35 on July 27. Everyone here is invited to celebrate with me…somewhere in CT…after doing something to elect Ned Lamont.)
Angie
Unfortunately my parents didn’t have that orientation, I had to figure all that stuff out for myself. My grandmother defended Nixon to the bitter end. She couldn’t handle the truth.
TeddySF @ 270:
Not exactly…Harper rode massive discontent with (big L) Liberal corruption held over from the 1990’s into a stunningly toothless minority government with the fewest pecentage of government seats ever and the largest number of seats short of a majority in Canadian political history (125 – 182), beholden for good will not only to their dreaded Liberal antagonists, but also the NDP socialistas and Quebec separatists who with them constitute the majority. Unlikely that the more odiferous aspects of his social agenda will be enacted until he earns a majority, and the rural/yahoo vote can’t do it all for him.
It appears that the Israeli actions have caught a number of governments off guard, resulting in a haphazard evac all around…Factor in the Sans souci approach seen in the Katrina response and, well…
*ilson, Wouldn’t surprise me to learn they did use Fed-Ex. *g*
db 289 -
How did that happen?
Funny how that happens, neuro. I am blessed and have never had to argue a lot of politics in my family– I got to just Listen and Learn (not that it never got heated *g* as we all learned).
They were right all along. It is about freedom, human rights, and caring for all people while telling the truth. That is what America stands for. Glad you made it here with your own goodness and persistence. And bless your grandmother, too.
Atrios just posted a very nice video. (not sarcasm)
There are times when I feel absolutely ancient. I had graduated from law school when the Watergate hearings were on. I do remember watching some hearings with my Mom when I was a little girl, though. A Senator named McCarthy was carrying on. Young though I was, I thought it strange that Mom was yelling at a TV set when it obviously couldn’t hear her. I continued to think it was strange until, as an adult, I found myself yelling at a TV during a Ronald Reagan speech. I don’t do that anymore, however. The mute button is a major miracle of modern science.
Condoleezza Rice is going to the Middle East Sunday. The only point for such a trip would be to pressure both sides into a ceasefire and stop the spiraling cycle of violence. After that, you sound out both sides as to what their issues are beyond the hokum and the rhetoric, you present to each side your synthesis of their positions and get them to begin talking to each other quietly in private and you keep them on issue. OK, this is not going to happen because there are no adults left in our government and if there were they would have acted a week ago and not two days from now.
What is going to happen is that Condoleezza is going to go with squat to pressure anyone. She is not going to press for a ceasefire. She is going to go to Israel where they are politely not going to listen to her. In spite of this, she will support the Israelis and condemn Hezbollah, proving to any who don’t already know that she is not there either as a mediator or an honest broker. To underline that point, she has already said that she will not be talking to Hezbollah or the Syrians.
It is likely that even before she leaves for the Middle East, the Israelis may begin a land war in Lebanon. This will only demonstrate the more the complete vacuousness of her mission.
From Israel, she will go to Rome where she will harangue Arab leaders in public and they will harangue her in private. The result of these talks will be exasperation on the part of the Arab leaders and frustration on the part of Condi which she will relieve by doing some shoe shopping. Of course, if Israel invades Lebanon, the Rome meeting may not happen at all or be extremely stiff and brief. Condi may not even have time for the shoes and come back completely empty handed.
“It appears that the Israeli actions have caught a number of governments off guard”
Thanks db. That’s an overlooked fact and a window into the disarray that is the WH.
omg, Maura, you are having your Presidential birthday!
everyone, collect all your compromising videos and letters from Maura, we’ll be needing them now that she’s age-eligible for the Presidency. Nothing can stop her now but our evidence!

sad, sad fact: we have to work with the system we’ve got. which is why, yeah! we’re kicking the shit out of likudnik loving joe. but to think that, for example, anyone cares about your views on the BK bill, in this system in which the BK supporters outweigh netroots money by a factor of 10,000 to one? or more? hahahahaha. go back to your online games, little man.
no, this is all about finding wedges. which is not the same as demanding accountability. unfortunately, that only comes later. if you want it to be after the revolution, you know i’ll be right there with you. but before we shed all that blood, can we at least try something else?
gnite, pups. have a good un.
Oh Teddy I am 41 tomorrow and trying desperately not to believe that.
Hugh, say it ain’t so! I so appreciate your comments and insight.
My mom’s always blamed herself for my political activism, having exposed me to the McCarthy hearings in utero.
I was in Brussels when the International Herald Tribune headline blared about Butterfield’s testimony that there was taping in the Oval. Somehow, all Europe knew that would be the end of Nixon. It took 13 months, though.
So when folks talk about W’s Saturday Night Massacre moment — it may not yet have happened.
eli, i don’t know what you’ve done to this commenting system, but i just wrote and lost a long response to some of your way earlier points. it’s time for sleep, so know that revenge is a dish served best cold, and that rich corinthian leather awaits my torpid embrace of slumber now.

Eureka Springs, Ar; tomorrow the 22nd or the 23rd?

Well, I was responding to the claim that it’s unfair to say that the Democrats don’t stand for anything, because of how the media distorts or ignores what they say. And in the aggregate, the Dems simply have not made enough of an effort to oppose Republican bills and nominees. Which makes them harder to campaign against, if the Republicans can point out that half or more of the Democratic caucus was in favor of John Roberts, or the bankruptcy bill, or the AUMF, or the Patriot Act.
The Dems are clearly making a political calculation that it’s in their best interests to not rock the boat and to just let the Republicans hang themselves, but I think it’s the wrong calculation.

According to Leader Pelosi’s House Call letter, 90% of Democrats voted to override President Bush’s stem cell research veto. I think that sounds great, but I certainly take Eli’s point that 100% would be best. And I bet Leader Pelosi thinks so too, but she Leads with the caucus she has, not the caucus she wants.
Also, for an opposition party to oppose constructively, it must be neither undermined nor mocked for its efforts.
Thus the Lieberstrom.
Seems I was right about the smart thing! Many happy returns to Eureka Springs, Ar and Dru!!!!!!!!!!
I think that sounds great, but I certainly take Eli’s point that 100% would be best.
I can generally live with 90% as at least looking like a sincere effort. It’s when the number is closer to 50% (or less) that I get really pissed off.
Thanks angie *s*
Any cooks out there? Look for a wonderful and easy apple cake recipe from a 91 year old southern kitchen tomorrow.

Nahh, I’ve been busy this week. I think I need a change of pace too.
Oh. My. God.
Yeah, some of the early adapters of vlogging are, uh, nuts. I’m not entirely sure what benefits the technology offers to humanity, aside from the considerable snark value, of course.
On the other hand, vlogging has opened up a whole new way for Ann Althouse to not make any sense whatsoever. So there’s that.
Anyhoo, nice to see you too.
jane.
head and neck have exploded; gotta clean up now.
On the other hand, vlogging has opened up a whole new way for Ann Althouse to not make any sense whatsoever. So there’s that.
Aiiii-yahhhhh!!!
For the love of god, no. Hasn’t humanity suffered enough?
I agree. They should stop worry about how things will play and just do the right thing.
Hell, even if they did worry about how things will play, they should *still* stand up to the Republicans. The key for me has been that whenever I’ve seen polls broken out by party affiliation, the Republicans’ support comes almost entirely from Republicans, and the Independents look a lot like Dems.
So if the Independents are who the Dems are courting, then they should be standing up to the Republicans. If they’re courting *Republicans*, then they’re selling out *everyone else* for a very small marginal gain.
Jane … I don’t know which is more frightening – her choice of theme song tonight, her pronunciation of the word “war” or her about to fall off plunging neckline.
OMG is right!
Jane,
I haven’t stopped scrubbing my eyes with steel wool and bleach since I watched that Batshit Pam at Atlas Shrugs in the v-log.
I heard a snippet of the noxious Michael Savage on the radio tonight too. Needless to say the country is in rough shape.

From what little I was able to stomach, her vlog is a perfect extension of her blog.
This is still my all-time favorite Atlas video.
I wonder who told her she had talent.
Atlas sounds like a good reason to remain on dial up.
All thumbs…Sissy Hankshaw, right? Hehe. Tim/Tom – I like ‘em both!
#339: well, those other guys are going to try the same line again. Wonder if it will work? This, from yahoo news:
Cheney uses Mideast as campaign issue By NANCY BENAC, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jul 21, 6:10 PM ET
TAMPA, Fla. – Vice President Dick Cheney on Friday pointed to the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah as fresh evidence of the ongoing battle against terrorism that underscores the need to keep President Bush’s Republican allies in control of Congress.

(For those of you who have not seen it, I swear to God she sings and dances to Love Train. It is… mindblowing.)

They should stand up to the republicans for the simple fact that the republicans are wrong on just about everything.
But we’ve had this conversation before. It’s depressing.
Imagine John Kerry if he didn’t have the “supporting the war before voting against the war” albatross hung around his neck.

I wonder who told her she had talent.
The little voices in her head.
can’t get Pam to play at the link.
oh well perhaps that’s a good thing, spared….

I agree – I’m just saying that even political calculation should take them to the same place as moral calculation these days.
And yes, it *is* depressing.
I’ve only seen the vlogs posted here at firedoglake. After seeing those, I am afraid to look at any more. Atlas shrugs and rapping Michelle were powerful aversion therapy.
just can’t bring myself to make the effort to watch Atluss She-rugged….
can’t get Pam to play at the link.
oh well perhaps that’s a good thing, spared….
Did I mention she uses the word “epiphany”?
save it til you feel the need to purge or something, teddy. i promise it’ll work, pronto.
w’s v at 360: I missed the transformation to your new handle. when there’s some down time, could you explain? not sure I understood your old handle, but maybe I should click through to learn more….
I agree – I’m just saying that even political calculation should take them to the same place as moral calculation these days.
True, dat.
Atlas Shrugged, one hell of an emetic.

Tito Fuentes
ah, but there’s the money calculation, and for some, no amount of political smarts and moral compass can overcome the need to love the money, apparently.
Or, in Boxer’s case, perhaps it’s just the friendship.
grrrrr. why did i remind myself about her?
Atlas Shrugged, one hell of an emetic.

but is she ant ice emetic?
Are the clueless corporate Dem consultants still saying that the party should just sit on its hands? Or try to go all 4th grade Sunday School all the time? I hope not. I just read some papers that ran the poll numbers. Man, it was Iraq, terrroism and the economy numbers one two three that changed votes. Folks who were uninformed or uncertaing went with Bush because he was incumbent, and a lot of those were Democrats. Last election strategy by the brilliant consultants seems to have been a triple loser: they get out the base, we lose independents, and we lose the Democrats who were on the fence because the Dems gave no pushback. And they are still running things? The world has gone bad. Almost makes me wish I liked likker more.
ah, but there’s the money calculation, and for some, no amount of political smarts and moral compass can overcome the need to love the money, apparently.
And I think this is in fact the problem. They just *pretend* that it’s political calculation; that is the language they use to rationalize it and make it sound like they didn’t just vote the way their corporate paymasters told them to.
four legs good – Are you the one who brought us “WATB”?
four legs good – Are you the one who brought us “WATB”?
Word gets around…
re: psycho woman; I got to 1 min 3 sec before I had to bail. Not that I need to protect my beautiful mind; but I did not want to spend another moment feeling such contempt. I have a drama prone very southern friend who would has a saying for whenever he observes humans behaving badly that comes to mind: “OHMIGOD we deserve to go to hell and fry like baloney”. I think I know what he means now.
four legs good – Are you the one who brought us “WATB”?
Holy crap!!
Recognition at last. Yes, I am.
fried greed tomatoes
Well I guess the Israelis realized they had enough problems on their hands for the moment.

Well I guess the Israelis realized they had enough problems on their hands for the moment.
She is certified bat-shit insane.
Recognition at last. Yes, I am.
I thought so.
I just happened to be reading an Atrios thread one day as that was being discussed.
Web arcana. Credit where due.
Does anyone know how likely it is that the bombs which killed 7 Canadians came from the U.S.? I read earlier tonight that we were stepping up our bomb shipments to Israel…
Late Nite, y’all
I just happened to be reading an Atrios thread one day as that was being discussed.
Web arcana. Credit where due.
Yah. Sadly, it’s spread all over the web and no one’s ever given me a hat tip.
(sob)
Late nite is up.
Thanks for WATB, four legs good!
Late Nite is up
Good, no Atlass Shrug vlogs from a warzone. We can be thankful for small favors.
This may be OT, but people might be interested in a detailed run down of GOP religious progaganda strategy. Thing that caught my eye is, according to this analysis, conservative and liberal groups send out about the same number of unique and original religious themed messages. It is just that the RNC floods the world with gay-marriage religion tie-ins. Send out the same thing ten times more often than anyone else.
Is that what the concerned Dems mean when they want the party to get more religious, send out more junk mail? I was wondering if the Leftwing Blogoswarm (threatening comfortable existence as we know it), was getting got on Obama’s case too much for that speech. After seeing this, I think not. The whole GOP religion thing is basically data-mining hoooked up a junk mail machine.
People here are more sophisticated than I am, so everyone probably knows this already.
Well, here is the link, detailed instructions on how to set up a RNC religious junk mail operation:

Sadly, it’s spread all over the web and no one’s ever given me a hat tip.
Consider yourself recognized for this Ginormous contribution. Atrios owes you big time.
Observoe 143
Do you think criticizing a reporter who is already hostile to your candidate is going to make them, um . . . oh, never mind.
Okay, Late nite has now evaporated; I’m getting an error message…
Rope, Tree, Republican?-sounds like George Allen’s office decor (it was a noose actually)

Y’all have fun, hear? I’m too old and tired to stay up any later; gotta be awake and volunteer for Jim Webb tomorrow. Goodnite!
Consider yourself recognized for this Ginormous contribution. Atrios owes you big time.
Thanks.
Well, while we’re waiting…A musical interlude:
‘Don’t you wish your girlfriend was…not like me…?’
;>)
What the heck happened to the subsequent post?
TRex appears to have gone *poof*. Que pasa?
Go Webb!
You’re traveling through another dimension,
a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind;
a journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination.
That’s the signpost up ahead– your next stop . . . the Twilight Zone!
>>>>>>
and go Webb!
I came here because the comments on TRex’s Late Nite came to a standstill. When I tried to go back, it wasn’t there. *poof* indeed.
Stupid effing Canucks. Screwing up their evacuation from Lebanon. Hundreds still trapped in the south. Now they are down to only 3 little boats to get 10’s of thousands out. Canadians are the largest group of emigres in Lebanon. Guess Israel can’t invade without risking killing hundreds of those back bacon eating, beer swilling idiots.
Late-Nite is there. It’s good, too.
Mommybrain, I have two windows open, and I seem to be alone over there, maybe y’all have found your way to the TRex post and are immersed in it.
Also, don’t miss Matt O.’s link as well, in the comments.
I’m still getting Error 404 Not Found when I try to open the comments on Late Nite, although the front page is there.
TEddy, not sure how you’re at late nite. Several of us have noticed that it was pulled and it has also disappeared from the moderator’s panel. Wonder if it’s a mac/pc issue?
try this
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..-the-math/
I’m on a PC, and now I can’t even get to the front page.
JWR, are you able to navigate between the threads? I was there, checked back here and am stuck with pals right here. I get an error message when I try to go back and now, alas, must bid you all farewell til morning’s light.
Let’s hope the world is still here and getting better.
eureka, that link doesn’t work for me.
Here’s Eli’s explanation from the Future Parallel Universe of LateNite about what may have happened, mommybrain, perhaps this will help….
I certainly don’t understand this, but maybe you do.
did that help?
hmm I am open in both pages. don’t know how else to help. TRex cut and paste late nite.)
late nite comments refresh is working. everyone says hey j/k
angie- I could, but now I can’t. Here’s the direct link, FWIW.
Seems to work in my preview, so maybe it’s fixed.
Eureka’s link worked for me the second time I tried it. I’m open in both places now.
Seems to work in my preview, so maybe it’s fixed.
I think it is.
whew tossing another line
http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..-the-math/
TRex unplugged the chord. should be back up now.

I don’t understand the video. Where did the money come from?
